3L e nom du Seigneur est toujours nouveau. C’est pourquoi il est toujours prêt à régénérer l’homme. C’est le Seigneur qui donne la force & l'activité au feu. C’est le Seigneur qui a voulu que nous ne puissions saisir ce feu , que par l’organe de votre vue. C’est le Seigneur qui a formé des élémens supérieurs à l'air ; c’est le Seigneur qui a formé l’air au - dessus des élémens grossiers , & qui le rend imperceptible à nos regards. C’est le 'Seigneur qui remplit les astres d’un air actif, virtuel & dépositaire de sa propre direction ; voilà pourquoi ils arrivent chacun à leur terme. Ranime-toi, foible mortel, à ce spectacle actif de la nature. Ne passe pas un jour, sans t’être appliqué à l’œuvre , jusqu’à sentir l'action de l’esprit. Voilà le pain, qui chaque jour peut te donner la vie , parce que le nom du Seigneur est toujours nouveau. Est-ce à des discours & à des paroles, qu’un puissant élu de Dieu se consacrera ? Il est comme un homme qui entre dans- la ville d’un grand roi. A chaque homme qu’il rencontre, à chaque porte où il frappe , on lui répond : Oui, je suis habitant de cette ville, je suis sujet & serviteur du grand roi. Frappez à toutes les portes de l’univers , adressez- vous à la terre, aux fleuves, aux volcans, aux poissons de la mer, aux bêtes des champs, aux oiseaux du ciel ;

1396 MAN The walls collapse, the breach is passable, the conqueror enters in triumph into the fortress, and shall demolish it even to its foundations. Without this, the fire of iniquity would still have outlets; to fill them entirely, all the debris of the tower of Babel is needed. The inhabitants have all been put to the sword. Neither the old men, nor the women, nor the children were spared. Blood streams through the whole city: it shall bury itself within the gulf, and carry there whatever remained to them of the principle of life; so that this perverse race may be destroyed, and its name erased from beneath the heaven. The conqueror shall lay new foundations upon this purified earth. He shall raise there a city of peace and of light. A holy people shall come to dwell there. Its gates shall open toward the rising sun, and shall never close again throughout all the eternities. The nations shall come there, to the sound of instruments, and singing canticles, to praise and to worship the Lord, who shall have procured for them all these blessings. I HAVE opened the eyes of my thought. I have seen men afflicted within their souls. Faithful friend, separate thyself from me, to go bring help to theirs. My prayer shall become a greater labor, because I shall find myself, as it were, alone.
2I shall watch during my solitude and my widowhood; my thought shall follow my friend within his work of charity. Ought not our work to be done in common between our friend and us? and when our friend is occupied elsewhere by charity, must we not redouble our labor, so that our work may suffer no delay? This is what our friend does so often himself, within our sorrows, within our dangers, within our illnesses, that it is only just that we return it to him when the occasion arises. Oh, my brethren, send one another your friends, and there shall no longer be any afflicted among you. Send one another your friends, you shall thereby tend to your true interests, and there shall no longer be any poor among you. They wish to deny the degradation of man, and his fall from a primitive state; and yet there are, among them, men afflicted and who feel desire! They wish to deny the secondary corruptions subsequent to that first transgression; and yet there are, among them, poor and needy men! At least do not deny your ills, if you know not how to heal them. How shall the physician come, if he is not called? and how shall your friend call him, if you do not leave him the liberty to do so, and if you do not confess to him the full extent of your ills?
3THE name of the Lord is always new. This is why he is always ready to regenerate man. It is the Lord who gives strength and activity to fire. It is the Lord who willed that we could grasp that fire only through the organ of your sight. It is the Lord who formed elements superior to air; it is the Lord who formed the air above the coarser elements, and who renders it imperceptible to our sight. It is the Lord who fills the stars with an active air, virtual and possessed of its own direction; this is why each of them arrives at its own term. Revive thyself, feeble mortal, at this active spectacle of nature. Let not a day pass, without having applied thyself to the work, until thou feelest the action of the spirit. Behold the bread, which each day can give thee life, because the name of the Lord is always new. Is it to discourses and to words, that a powerful elect of God shall devote himself? He is like a man who enters into the city of a great king. To every man he meets, at every gate at which he knocks, he is answered: Yes, I am an inhabitant of this city, I am a subject and a servant of the great king. Knock at every gate of the universe, address yourselves to the earth, to the rivers, to the volcanoes, to the fish of the sea, to the beasts of the fields, to the birds of the sky;
