1393 til we can kindle our torch there. If we once succeed in making it shine, it can no longer be extinguished. It shall let us discover upon the earth that immortal altar, where we must ceaselessly offer our sacrifice, and manifest within the visible universe what passes within the invisible universe. Are not all the faculties of man like those immortal lights, that were meant to rest upon the golden candlestick? A sharp arrow has pierced my soul. It has broken all the bonds that held me wrapped, as within the swaddling clothes of my childhood. Our God communicates his secrets only to those who devote themselves to his service. It is these to whom he grants a share in his spirit, in his knowledge, and in his love. Man is a whole universe, where all the agents of all the worlds labor toward the fulfillment of their law. Set all his principles into action, take hold of all his organs. See for him, hear for him, act for him, speak for him, exile yourselves for him; for his existence is as though nothing, when he is reduced to himself alone. Above all, holy friends of man, fructify him within his prayer; for his prayer is as though dead, so long as he is not regenerated.
2It resembles those feeble breaths, which can scarcely stir the leaves of the trees, and leave it as though overwhelmed by the weight of a stifling heat. Jude, why didst thou not write more? Thy thought is like a violent wind, that sets the whole atmosphere in motion, and that makes us feel the refreshment of the spirit, after the devouring ardor of our oppressive climate. The spirit must descend and enter into man like a torrent; it must do him violence, to purify him of everything that obstructs him. It comes to bring war and not peace, and it desires nothing better than for war to be kindled. It wills that we be at peace with our fellow men, and that we be at war with ourselves. Only he who is at war with himself is at peace with his fellow men. What man is this whom I see walking amid the nations? He seems to shine with the light of the just. His majestic bearing announces his wisdom, his gifts, and his power. He advances like the star through the vast plains of the firmament. Come forth from your lethargic repose, come forth from your tombs, human souls; and come contemplate this man who shines amid the nations. He presents himself to the four winds of heaven, and commands them
3395 to suspend the tempests. He presents himself to the gulfs of the earth, and commands iniquity to cast itself into its abysses. Be reborn for man, O days of peace! The earth shall no longer fear the strength of poisons; they have been turned into a healing balm. The cruel enemy of man shall be separated from him forever. That enemy had received the healing balm, and had turned it into venom: it can no longer heal wounds, it can now only wound and poison itself. I SHALL SEND to every region a portion of my sin, that they may cast it down and grind it into dust. Should I fear that the universe knows my sin, when I did not fear that the Lord knew it? I have confessed my weakness to you, and you have made me feel your strength and your power. Let us unite ourselves within a holy alliance; let sin become for me as though a thing unknown, a thing impossible to commit, a thing impossible to believe. Strike without respite, each hurl your darts upon the walls of this tower of confusion, which has risen in the midst of Jerusalem. Overthrow some part of it each day; and let these debris, as they fall, cover the openings that the fire of iniquity has made in the earth.
