1384 MAN All the primitive relations of God to man would show themselves at every epoch within their natural state, and the chain of the ages would form for man nothing but a long unfolding of the lights, of the virtues, and of the delights that belong to the Author of his being. What, then, must be the sorrow of the man of desire, when he reads: That the Lord looked down from heaven upon the earth, to know whether there was a man who did good, and that not a single one was found! MUST I give you a proof of the greatness of man? He is the only being of nature who can make other beings act by the rights of his will. All others, except him, are confined to the sole rights of their physical strength. They can demand nothing from other beings. Man has the power to give them even speech; and one would be astonished that at the origin he had given them names! Does he not give them names every day, and throughout the whole earth? Why dost thou fail to recognize thy glorious titles? Thou canst not perish, thou knowest it, since thou art an essential power of the divinity. But if thou wouldst, thou couldst not even be unhappy, since thou couldst not be a single instant without thy God. After the likeness of the sun, thou wast emancipated only to bring to fruit all the invisible seeds with which thine atmosphere is filled. Tr
2Bb 385 Thou hast ceased to be the instrument of grace; but in ceasing to be its instrument, thou hast become its object, and thou shalt always serve it as testimony. Are not the laws and the beneficent decrees of wisdom indelible? 18o. Where do the first steps of wisdom lead? To being frightened by the vices and the abominations that flood the earth. What, then, is the enormous weight the fundamental pillars of the work must bear? They are the true Hercules who sustain the world; they could not let go their hold for a single instant, without this moral universe being exposed to collapse and to fall into ruin. Weak and corrupted men, they intercede wisdom for your wanderings; negligent sovereigns, they watch over you and over your empires, which you know neither how to direct nor how to defend. Iniquities of another order, they exhaust themselves even unto death to combat you. Always upon the breach against an enemy that always besieges the fortress; Tears, prayers, charity, the perpetual efforts of every faculty of their being, such is the state to which the crime and the falsehood of man have reduced them. Yet they are secure amid all these torments, because these torments keep man within a higher region.
3386 MAN The prophets and the true wise men have suffered greatly. They have often desired death, none gave it to himself; were they Ahithophels and Judases? Samson himself, in immolating himself, was not driven by remorse for crime, but by the desire to save his people. It is only false sufferings, born of crime, that so deprave us as to make us crawl beneath the yoke, and press us to deliver ourselves from it. They also hide from us that, through this violent remedy, instead of curing us, we do nothing but make ourselves more sick, because we falsify yet another law. 28 I. See the tongue of man forming burning traces upon every substance. See it cover the universe with its luminous characters. Everywhere it comes to dissolve thick and coagulated matter; everywhere it comes to melt metals. It touches nothing without sparks springing forth from it; because it is emanated from light, and is charged with propagating the reign of light. You shudder, like burning brass, when it strikes you, O enemy of truth. You try to darken its brightness with your impure fires, and you employ all your efforts to resist its action. But you shall never prevail against it. Has not the divine tongue written upon man? Has it not
