1381 that his whole work resided; and he has practiced its cult with the care, the continuity, and the exclusive zeal that reign within the region of eternity for the cult of the Author of beings. Unhappy men, would they, then, carry heaven into the abyss! It is enough that they have carried their thought there. It is enough, to show them what their primitive destination was, and what their condemnation shall be. O man, didst thou know what inflamed gulfs are hollowed out within thee and by thee! Subterranean fires rise up through the ruins of the world, and reveal its fragility. These fires rise into the air by the law of their own nature. But how long must they wander through space, before uniting themselves to pure elements, and becoming living, salutary, and generative substances! Temporal things live only outwardly; thus they show, everywhere, a vivid exterior, and a dead center. What edifice, then, wouldst thou build with such materials? True and fixed things, on the contrary, buried within the darkness of our region, must offer a dead exterior and a living center. Joy of the wise, this is why thou art unknown to the common man, and why thou canst make thyself truly felt only from God to man.
2382 MAN When the keystone had been raised to the top of the vault, the scaffolding became useless. It is from it that all the other stones draw their strength. It saved man, by slaying death; but it did not prevent him from being able to lose himself. Had we not the power to create death, would the divine power have needed to come and destroy it? It is because he was in every way like unto man, that he was able to draw near to death; it is because he had no sin, that he was able to destroy it. Who could depict the joy of the heavens, when they saw death destroyed! Men, you give material life to your children. You celebrate the day of their birth as a day of feasting, with the most brilliant lights, in memory of those celestial radiances that accompanied the primitive birth of man. When temporal man has fulfilled the course of his earthly life, and enters into the region of the spirit, all the inhabitants of that region give themselves over, as you do, to joy, at seeing the family of the spirit increase. What, then, must have been the felicity of the divine region, when it saw man reborn for God! What other than a God could restore to us that divine life, and regenerate the family of God? All these orders of generation have their delights.
3383 The soul of man is capable of knowing them all, because it belongs to every order. The imprudent, and they have said that man was nothing! The imprudent! Oh, how they shall blush one day, at having let that blasphemy come forth from them! The root can do nothing except through its power. This is why God does nothing except through his prophets. Thou thyself, divine Restorer, didst take thy way within the soul of thy apostles; thou couldst act only through them. This is why the work is so slow and so hidden; because it is obliged to pass through the way of man, and man is no longer within his purity and within his primitive law. Thou owest nothing to man, since it is he who has received everything from thee; and yet thou seekest him within his darkness and within his crimes. Thou canst not forget him, because there is a lively, holy, and sovereignly sweet tendency, from the root to the power. Cannot a single divine ray bring forth every miracle? and would it be surprising if the whole world were subjected to man, if man let God govern and animate his soul? What peace would reign upon the earth, if within the new and artless soul of children were sown nothing but true words and true ideas!
