1372 0 MAN wounds! that every drop that penetrates there may bring health and life! It is surely to restore health and life, that man was formed by thee, supreme God. He can judge of it by the sweetness his soul experiences, when he fulfills this divine function. But he can judge of it also by his sorrows, when he sees the wounds of the people, and would wish to have at his disposal all the balm of Gilead to heal them. Employ thy tears there, if thou canst not employ the balm of Gilead there. If they are persevering, they shall even have the power to produce it and to make it flow along with them. If it is permitted to give oneself over to jealous longing, it is for the soul that feels the sorrows of charity! O mine eyes, fill yourselves with tears; I shall have to weep throughout the whole duration of the ages, before recovering that living balm. Why so long a term? it is because I have set all the ages as the interval between it and me. But also, if I have the courage to weep throughout the duration of the ages, shall I not find it again, and shall I not possess it throughout a duration without ages and without time? When you shall have entered into the land which the Lord your God is to give you, take care not to imitate the abominations of these peoples.
2Aa 3 Let there not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, to purify them, Or who solicits diviners; who observes omens, auguries, and who gives himself over to sorceries and enchantments, and who consults magicians, wizards, and sorcerers, 6 and who seeks truth among the dead. The Lord has founded his temple within the heart of man; he has traced there the whole plan of it: it is for man to raise its walls and to complete the whole edifice. Let us form man in our image and in our likeness. It is here that my sanctuary shall be established; I have reserved this innermost place for the holy of holies. Man, behold where the oracle has chosen its dwelling: surround it with thick and majestic trees; let their crowns join together and bend into bowers, to hide the sight of it from the eye of the profane. Reserve there, for thyself alone, an entrance: afflicted man, man of desire, go there alone, like the high priest; and leave outside every false desire, every deceitful covetousness, all those defiled garments. Go there alone, that is to say, with a single thought; and let that thought be the thought of thy God. Thus separated from the rest of the whole universe, let there be only God and thyself as witnesses of thy prayer and of thy supplications. Draw near to the oracle respectfully, wait in silence, and as though suspending all thine inward faculties. Thou shalt not be long in hearing his answer, even shouldst thou hear no words uttered. Thou shalt come forth, radiant with glory, from this dwelling
3374 0 MAN sacred. Thou shalt be obliged to veil thy face when presenting thyself to the people, for fear it should be dazzled by it. Thou shalt make known to them the decrees of thy God, and thou shalt be preserved from the snares and the false decrees of the princes of falsehood. Let thy thoughts turn perpetually toward this oracle; it is the only one the Lord desires thee to heed, and he urges thee to flee all the others. He has placed his temple and his oracle within thy heart, so that at all times and in all places, whether walking or at rest, thou mightest always be in a state to enter it and to consult it. IS IT from the bosom of laziness and of indolence, that one must go seek the eye and the hand of God? Never forget that he is a jealous God, and one who loves to be prayed to; because he knows that prayer opens the channels of his divine life. Pray, human soul, pray 2 my soul! Thou canst not pray, without thy God himself praying with thee. What could be refused thee, if he who grants is the same as he who asks? Thou hast let thyself become so materialized, that thou didst lose every idea of the things from on high; and thou camest to the point of saying to thyself: Is there a spiritual region? Thou shalt spiritualize thyself to the point of being sometimes able to ask thyself: Is there such a thing as matter?
