1Z 3 OF DESIRE. 357 Come, form dances of gladness around this living column. It shall itself give forth harmonious sounds, which shall regulate all your steps, and which shall direct their measure. From it shall come forth a gentle and brilliant light, which shall illuminate the whole enclosure. Festoons and garlands shall extend, from its summit to the furthest edge of that enclosure, and shall form ravishing bowers, which shall not merely preserve you from the injuries of the air. They shall delight your eyes with the most captivating spectacle; they shall spread perfumes with which your whole being shall be embalmed; and you shall find those dwellings so delightful, that you shall no longer wish to leave them. Is it not in order to leave a portion of his spirit upon the earth, that man is sent there as a trial? Of what use would his action be, if not that living and powerful virtues might trace their characters through him, and leave them there permanently after him? Woe to you, mortals, who shall have passed in vain upon the earth, and who shall have sown no virtue there! Woe to you who shall have let your thought wander, and who shall not have found the care of your own being pressing enough to fix it! It shall never be said of you: he felt the dignity of his existence, he filled his post with glory.
2358 MAN Souls of peace shall not say: He helped me within my misfortune, he preserved me from perversity, he sustained me by his example, and he gave birth within me to the taste for wisdom; it is to him that I owe having sought it, and having preferred it to the joys of the world. You shall be null for your fellow beings, as you shall have been for yourself. You shall be forgotten, like those light winds that lose themselves within the mass of the air. Woe to you, if you have left behind harmful and lying signs! Woe to you, if the nations to come have cause to reproach you for having led them astray! Woe to you, if they can say: He is the cause of our deceptions and of the falsehood into which we have been delivered; he is the cause of the trouble that pursues us; and his name cannot be uttered by us, except with the language of malediction. These frightful words shall pursue you even into the tomb, and shall torment you even more than the infection of your sepulchers. 25 8. Pride, together with instruction! How could these two things be compatible? Listen: Thy whole life is needed to study merely the names of a small part of the mechanisms that compose a body; and even these names are conventional, and teach thee nothing:
3Z 4 259 And it needed only a single act of the word, to form the immensity of beings, with all their principles, all their positive names, and the universality of their laws! How does humility become thy strength? It is because then thou lettest the principle reign; and all strength comes from it. If thou glorifiest thyself, thou becomest weak, because thou separatest thyself from the principle, in wishing to put thyself in its place. When, to wipe away thy tears and thy sweat, living wisdom is willing to make thee resonant throughout thy whole being, like the most silvery metal; is it to thyself that thou canst attribute that blessing? And by thyself, art thou not confounded with the most opaque and the most deaf of substances? It is not enough for me to open; his light must help me to disentangle what I encounter. I must painfully lift up my tomb, in order to recover the freedom to breathe the air. My tomb is composed of the debris of the whole universe, and the enemy still weighs upon it, for fear its weight might not be crushing enough. It is not enough for man to lift up the world, and to carry it, like another Hercules, upon his shoulders; he must also place himself upon the sphere of the universe, and, from that throne, let himself be carried by the winds into the immensity of space.
