1354 L‘ H 0 M M E sanctuaire ? L’homme léger est entraîné par le charme de faire écouter ses paroles ; l’homme prudent est entraîné par les charmes du silence. Les montagnes ont tressailli, quand le peuple Hébreux est sorti de l’Egypte , & la terre a été agitée à la vue de la face du Seigneur ; mais les deux même ont été émus à la vue de la grande victoire qui a délivré l’homme entier de la terre de perdition. Supérieure aux victoires de Moïse, la grande victoire n’a précipité aucune nation humaine, parce que c’étoit toute la famille humaine qu’elle venoit tirer de la terre de servitude. Elle a précipité le prince de l’iniquité dans ses abymes ; elle a ouvert la porte de la gloire & de la puissance à tous ceux qui voudront approcher du Libérateur en esprit & en vérité. Qui ne se sent pas rempli de force & de courage, à la seule présence d’un guerrier brave , puissant & célèbre ? David n’a -1 - il pas dit qu’avec l’élu , on sera élu ? Pourquoi parler de cette grande victoire , & de la gloire du Libérateur, à ceux qui n’ont pas commencé par soumettre les Egyptiens , & soutenir les fatigues du désert? Hommes difficiles, hommes nourris dans la sécheresse de l’intelligence humaine, vous ne voulez vous servir que de la règle & du compas :

Alors, comme un roi formidable, vous marcherez à la conquête de la ville sainte. O terre plus amère que la mort , quel fardeau tu laisses peser sur l’homme , tandis qu’il voudroit porter sa tête dans les deux ! & ce n’est que par ce poids accablant que tu peux le ramener à sa simplicité primitive. Tu entraînes par là toutes les souillures dont il s’étoit rempli , & dont il se remplit tous les jours. Tu entraînes les métaux vils , pour ne laisser briller que l’or pur ; cet or pur, avec lequel seul la langue des prophètes extrait le miel de la pierre, & paie la la rançon des captifs. Parce que les hommes vous ont tronipé , & se sont trompés encore plus souvent, vous êtes tenté d’étendre votre défiance jusques sur Dieu même. Quand est-ce qu’ils s’abandonneront à la main qui les soutient & qui les guide! Quand est-ce qu’ils oublia* ront leur propre sagesse , & qu’ils se reposeront sur la seule base d’où s’élève la colonne éternelle de la vérité !

1354 0 MAN sanctuary? Light-minded man is drawn on by the charm of making his words heard; prudent man is drawn on by the charms of silence. The mountains trembled, when the Hebrew people came forth from Egypt, and the earth was shaken at the sight of the face of the Lord; but even the heavens were moved at the sight of the great victory that delivered the whole of man from the land of perdition. Superior to the victories of Moses, the great victory cast down no human nation, because it was the whole human family that it came to draw forth from the land of servitude. It cast the prince of iniquity into his abysses; it opened the door of glory and of power to all those who shall wish to draw near to the Deliverer in spirit and in truth. Who does not feel himself filled with strength and with courage, at the mere presence of a brave, powerful, and celebrated warrior? Has not-1-David said that with the elect, one shall be elect? Why speak of that great victory, and of the glory of the Deliverer, to those who have not begun by subduing the Egyptians, and bearing the fatigues of the desert? Difficult men, men nourished in the dryness of human understanding, you wish to make use only of the rule and the compass:

Revive thyself, human power, tell the mountains that delay you within your march, to remove themselves far from you, and they shall cast themselves into the sea. Then, like a formidable king, thou shalt march to the conquest of the holy city. O earth more bitter than death, what a burden thou lettest weigh upon man, while he would wish to carry his head within the heavens! and it is only through this crushing weight that thou canst bring him back to his primitive simplicity. Thou thereby drawest away all the defilements with which he had filled himself, and with which he fills himself every day. Thou drawest away the base metals, to let shine only the pure gold; that pure gold, with which alone the tongue of the prophets extracts the honey from the rock, and pays the ransom of the captives. Because men have deceived thee, and have deceived themselves still more often, thou art tempted to extend thy distrust even unto God himself. When shall they surrender themselves to the hand that sustains and guides them! When shall they forget their own wisdom, and rest upon the sole foundation from which the eternal column of truth rises!
