127 If you exalt their ideas too much, you give them anticipated and dangerous desires. If you bend their minds toward composite things, you give rise in them to difficulties that lead them astray. Wisdom, wisdom, thou alone knowest how to guide man without fatigue and without danger, through the peaceful gradations of light and truth. Thou hast taken time for thy organ and thy mediator; it teaches everything, as thou dost, in a gentle, imperceptible manner, and while continually keeping silence; whereas men teach us nothing, for all the continual and excessive abundance of their words. The Lord advances like a living fire; he takes possession of every portion of fire that is spread throughout beings. He lights his torches before the human soul, he accompanies it himself, to bring it more safely to the gates of love. 0 man, how thou wilt one day groan, when, with the influences of disorder with which thou shalt have filled thyself, thou drawest near to the region of order! How, with the wonders by which living wisdom had formed my existence, could I make myself the mercenary and the fabricator of illusion! How could I have accused of injustice the hand that had occupied itself only with heaping me with its favors! The word had not conquered time, it had not entered into man, it had not engraved itself in him, it had not made itself heard continually in him, except so that he might cause its harmonious sounds to resound abroad, and that he might sing the praises of universal mercy.
228 L’ H 0 M M E No, Lord, it is not permitted to man to possess here below all the good things that his thought lets him glimpse. Thou art willing not to deny him the hope of it, lest he grow discouraged; but justice cannot yet grant him the full enjoyment of it, he could not bear it. Oh, how beautiful the reality of the world to come will appear to our eyes, since the illusion of this present world, fleeting and apparent as it is, is already so imposing and so magnificent! In the region of life, the act of the spirit is perpetual. Regenerated man there lets his gaze wander without interruption over living and pure beings, whose aspect sanctifies him. All these movements strike upon him in succession, and leave no faculty of his unfilled. When will the time come when time itself shall be hastened, and shall no longer rob man of the enjoyment and the rights of his being? During time we can only seek wisdom and truth with difficulty. Above time, one possesses them. Below time, one vomits insults against them. Holy regions, these curses will never prevail against you. The blood of the earth shall no longer rise above its head; the Eternal has struck it down by the voice of his triple thunder, and has made it return into its channels.
329 He has bound the heavens to the earth, by sowing in the soul of his elect the germ of the spirit of truth. He has bound the earth to the heavens, by making that same divine germ bear fruit in the soul of those same elect. May all beings, in time past, in time present, and in time to come, bless his name. It is through the seeking of his name, and the praise of his name, that I shall come to outlast time. Nations of the earth, generations to come, make good use of my secrets. Time shall be hastened beneath you, you shall obtain the joy and the rest of your souls. Such is the reward and the blessings that shall descend upon my canticles. Men would lead you to God through labyrinths; some would even make it a crime for you to seek him. Mysteries of the kingdom of God, you are less inexplicable than the mysteries of the kingdom of men. Who will dare say that evil is anything other than a deviation from the good? Who will dare regard it as a stagnation within the straight line? There is stagnation only beside the riverbed; there can be none within the currents. In the region of life, this line is a great and eternal current, which by its rapidity sweeps everything along in its course, and draws in everything that is found upon its banks,
