1I 345 what is the place, what is the object, from which he shall draw no satisfactions? How shall the priest live from the altar of life, if he does not bring to it a ray that draws the spirit of life? and if he bears within him what can draw the spirit of life, could he not-1-revive even the altar of death? Know, then, deluded man, what character thou wast meant to bear within the universe. It is thou who, as depositary of life, wast meant to transmit sanction to beings. They were nothing to thee, unless thou didst begin by animating them with the sacred fire, which thou hadst the right to go and take from the altar of life. Today dost thou spread life around thee? Dost thou carry it into the objects that draw near thee? Dost thou not seem to await from them the satisfactions and the life thou wast meant to give them? And yet thou seekest to extinguish within them the ray of fire, granted to them by thy nature. Thou dost transpose every substance; thou findest that nothing is in its place. Thou disfigurest everything, and mutilatest even thine own species; ever seeking pleasures and enjoyments, which thou art not obliged to bring forth from thyself. What, then, dost thou draw from thy so ill-directed efforts? Thou drawest from them nothing but disappointments. Dost thou not feel under what condition thou wast once meant to enjoy happiness? It was necessary that thy spirit be never, for a single instant, without a true thought, thy heart without a new and pure feeling, and thy action without a living and salutary work.
2346 MAN Learn, at least, even within thy errors, to convince thyself of thy greatness, and of thy sublime destination. It is a false life that thou seekest to spread over every object that surrounds thee. But even within falseness, it is still the image of that real life of which thou wast meant to be the dispenser. Thou dost act ill, thou dost act within falsehood; but thou dost act, and thy action alone proves that it could only have been given thee for good and for truth, since it had been given thee by the author of good and of truth. When man had made himself guilty, he was, from that instant, subjected to three trials or to three temptations, and these three trials embrace the whole immensity of time. Man, thou couldst not have borne even a single one of these trials, without being overthrown and without being vanquished. A powerful hand placed itself between the enemy and thee, at the moment of thy fall; it placed itself there also at the time of the second trial; it thereby stopped the blow the prince of darkness was about to strike thee. It shall place itself once more between the enemy and thee at the end of time, or at the time of the last trial, because it loves thee, and does not wish thee to perish. These epochs were advanced for the salvation of man. The enemy perceived it, when he asked the Restorer why he tormented him before the time.
3347 11 shall be still the same demand at the end of the third time; and for reply, he shall be cast down into his abysses. It is to accomplish this triple work, that the divine Octonary once separated itself from the Denary, and has not yet been reintegrated into it. It is for this that it still lets the intermediate number subsist, which today serves them as interval. It is for this that fire is still beneath, whereas by its ascending law it ought to be above; and it is this that keeps all of nature in suffering, as well as all the beings subjected to it. Turn thy gaze toward the region of peace, where pure beings shall be within a perpetual reaction of truth and of light. Such shall be the lot of those who shall have conquered; of all those who shall have done their work before the time, and who shall have labored constantly toward the universal communion. To do one's work before the time, is that not at least to gain much on the side of appearance, since its illusion is always to our disadvantage? How could the Eternal forget his covenant with men? Their very lapses render it even more present to him. Their disorders arrest the circulation of life upon them; they cause the divine rays to flow back toward
