L’homme inique , l’homme dépravé , l’homme sensuel , l’homme sensitif , l’homme sensible , l’homme moral, l’homme spirituel, l’homme fapientiel, l’homme divin.

1336 MAN WHO shall dare compare the taste and the ideas of wisdom, with which the soul of a child is filled, with the state of nothingness and of corruption to which men have brought things? Who shall dare it, above all, when it is we ourselves who are the object of the comparison! There would be cause to shed tears of blood and of gall. Let thy prayer be confident and bold, even to rashness. He wishes to be taken by violence. Everything is violence within the shadowy region where we are. He wishes thee, so to speak, to force him to come forth from his own contemplation, to cast his eyes upon thy misery, and to fly to thy aid. Here the work of man stops, because here the work of God begins. God wishes to be taken by violence; but he wishes to give himself through love. Here the work of man stops; but here begins that gentle breeze, which blew near Elijah upon the mountain of Horeb. The Lord shall penetrate into thy thought; he shall spread within thy heart a lively warmth, like that thou didst taste within thy childhood. The rights of thy manly age shall bring forth the works of thy hands, the understandings of thy spirit, the words of thy mouth, the tender charity of thy heart. Everything shall be accomplished within the calm of thy being, without agitation, without movement; thou shalt scarcely perceive it. Thou
2OF DESIRE. 337 shalt always believe thyself within thy natural state, because indeed it was thy natural state, to be perpetually united with thy God. Lord, Lord, we shall ask thee but one thing, that the soul of man may not have been given to him in vain! WHO shall grant me to take up the censer, and to go, like Aaron, into the midst of the camp, to prevent the serpents from devouring the children of Israel! What do they depict for us, all those who have not received life? They depict for us nothing but shadows; they depict for us nothing but imaginary reflections of that light they have not seen. Would they dare present themselves at the camp, to drive away the enemy? Were they to come there in the name of the Lord, they would be repulsed; and the enemy would say to them, as to the Jewish exorcists: I do not know you. Withdraw yourselves from shadows; they are the companions of the cold. Symbols themselves, though having their usefulness, are necessary only to those who do not know the principle. Before depicting, wait until you have models; and take not up the brush, unless it be life itself that warms you: For life shudders at the abuses that arise from indiscretion and from imprudence; it gives itself only to wise stewards.
3338 MAN Hast thou calculated the degrees of man? Behold his ladder. Iniquitous man, depraved man, sensual man, sensitive man, sensible man, moral man, spiritual man, sapiential man, divine man. Compare the two extremes, compare only the two regions; and see whether the inferior can perceive what passes within the superior. Thus we cannot say whence our works come: but the essential thing is not to say it; it is enough for us to feel it. My head has leaned over the well of the abyss. Who could bear, even an instant, that fetid odor, without being suffocated? Those somber and burning fires tire and wound the sight. But what raucous sounds rise from the depths of those shadowy caverns! These are the cries of the enemies of truth. When the day of vengeance shall have come, these cries shall become far more frightful. The wretched creatures! they do nothing yet but groan and lament. They seem still to do nothing but shed tears. But then they shall howl with rage; they shall gnash their teeth with fury. Formerly they found more earth than water; today they find more water than fire: and in future, they shall find more fire than Word; and their torment shall be that they cannot even profit from the sufferings and the torments of expiation.
