Notre être pensant doit s’attendre à des développe- mens immenses , quand il sera sorti de sa prison corporelle , où il prend sa forme initiatrice , comme Pensant prend celle de son corps dans le sein maternel. Mais cette proportion nous donne - t - elle une idée nette & instructive sur cet état glorieux qui nous attend? Ne la cherchons pas ici-bas, cette notion nette. Si nous l’avions , nous ne ferions plus en privation. Mais j’aperçois une loi superbe. Plus les proportions se rapprochent de leur terme central & générateur , plus elles sont grandes & puissantes. Cette merveille que tu nous permets de sentir & de découvrir, ô Vérité divine,' suffit à l’homme qui t’aime & qui te cherche. Il voit en paix dévider ses jours ; il le voit avec plaisir & ravissement. Parce qu’il fait , que chaque tour de la roue du temps rapproche pour lui cette proportion sublime, qui a Dieu pour le premier de ses termes , & qu’il est déjà prévenu que c’est l’homme qui sera le fécond. Ressuscitons avec celui qui est déjà ressuscite. Montons à cette région, pour y apprendre promptement

Il y a un temps pour recevoir des faveurs; il y a un temps pour en avoir l’intelligence : il faut qu’il y en ait un, pour présider à leur distribution. 11 I. Ne dites-vous pas qu’il faut pratiquer les arts , pour' en sentir toute la finesse , & pour y acquérir du goût ? Pratiquez donc aussi les principes de la vérité , si vous voulez parvenir à en connoître le charme & la douceur. Les charmes de l’intelligence vous mèneront à ceux de l’amour. Le germe du Seigneur, le germe de la parole vient de se semer de nouveau dans l’ame de l’homme. O vous, puissances bienfaisantes, venez le couvrir avec vos mains pures ! Que les oiseaux du ciel ne trouvent aucun passage pour venir le dévorer ! C’est toi qui es la force universelle ; c’est toi qui végètes dans tous les êtres ; c’est toi qui les as produits & qui les soutiens par le développement successif de tes puissances. Tu végéteras aussi en moi ; tu m’as donné l’être , comme à eux ; tu me continueras l’existence comme à eux, par ton acte vivificateur. Célébrons l’homme : il ne peut exister un instant, sans l’acte vivificateur de son Dieu ; sans que l’esprit ne soit en lui, comme dans une vibration continue. Nature , nature , tu as aussi le même avantage, puisque tu ne renfermes aucune substance , dont l'artiste industrieux ne puisse extraire les élémens de la lumière. Mais l’homme a au - dessus de toi le pouvoir de sentir ses sublimes privilèges , & d’en célébrer le divin auteur.

1312 0 MAN Where are the proportions here below, to be able to judge of the future state? Shall we take the example of the child within its mother's womb, compared to the state of the grown man? Our thinking being must expect immense developments, when it shall have come forth from its bodily prison, where it takes its initiatory form, just as the thinking being takes that of its body within the maternal womb. But does this proportion give us a clear and instructive idea of that glorious state that awaits us? Let us not seek it here below, that clear notion. Had we it, we would no longer be in privation. But I perceive a superb law. The more the proportions draw near their central and generative term, the greater and more powerful they are. That marvel which thou permittest us to feel and to discover, O divine Truth, suffices for the man who loves thee and who seeks thee. He sees his days unwind in peace; he sees it with pleasure and with rapture. Because he knows that each turn of the wheel of time brings nearer, for him, that sublime proportion, which has God for the first of its terms, and because he is already forewarned that it is man who shall be the second. Let us rise again with him who has already risen. Let us mount to that region, to learn there promptly

3314 MAN Practice the principles of truth, if you wish to know their charm and their sweetness. Do you not say that one must practice the arts, to feel their full subtlety, and to acquire taste for them? The seed of the Lord, the seed of the word has just been sown once more within the soul of man. O you, beneficent powers, come and cover it with your pure hands! Let the birds of the sky find no passage to come and devour it! It is thou who art the universal force; it is thou who dost vegetate within all beings; it is thou who hast produced them and who sustainest them through the successive development of thy powers. Thou shalt also vegetate within me; thou hast given me being, as to them; thou shalt continue my existence to me as to them, through thy life-giving act. Let us celebrate man: he cannot exist a single instant, without the life-giving act of his God; without the spirit being within him, as within a continual vibration. Nature, nature, thou hast also the same advantage, since thou containest no substance from which the industrious artist could not extract the elements of light. But man has, above thee, the power to feel his sublime privileges, and to celebrate their divine author.
