1V 3 - ! 30g What terror, then, can you take from this simple logic, whose form and clarity master your spirit? But the idol has mounted upon the high places; it has drawn to itself all the people. From the summit of that mountain it dominates the whole camp of Israel, and the people no longer have ears to hear the harmonious sounds of the shepherds who are within the plain. It no longer has eyes to see the streams of milk and of honey, which flow within that promised land; it no longer has taste to savor its sweetness. Overthrow that idol which holds you in slavery, and which seeks only to make you languish in want, in order to lead you to the tomb. Return to the midst of the camp with the people, and make it return within the tents. 2 18. DO I not see three degrees for man? He is above his measure, or at its level, or below it. Is he at the level, and does he obtain in proportion? he shall pass peaceful days. Is he above it? there is for him nothing but triumph and enjoyment? But that degree, it is not upon the earth that one must seek it. Who are those who suffer most? Those who have received from on high a great measure, and who are forced to wait elsewhere to fill it. It is these who shall be comforted: for they cannot fail to weep abundantly.
2310 MAN Lord, those whom thou choosest for thy work, are they not usually victims of the profound idea thou givest them of thyself? They meet on earth nothing but opposition to that profound idea; they see, every day, the living thing sacrificed to that which languishes and decomposes of itself. They see, every day, natural names become conventional, and never conventional names become natural again. Human warriors, your combats are rare, your defeat and your death uncertain, and the feeling of men's approval habitual. The warriors of truth are always upon the field of battle. They are, as it were, certain of experiencing there ills worse than death, and of never having for themselves the vote of opinion. Holy Truth, happily for these elect, that thy kingdom is not of this world! Nor is thy justice either, since thy kingdom is not of it: that is enough to encourage them; they are certain of their reward. Are we not all born with a gift? and if, through our vigilance, we obtain that it develop within us, what more shall we have to ask? We ought all to be crowned, since the faithful
3V 4 311 surrounds us with his action; he forms about us as though an enclosure, and around us a luminous circle. Men of truth, is it not for this that you have often been regarded as kings? Holiness, Holiness, thou makest all gifts analogous; thou teachest us that they all belong to the same spirit. Sound and light are strangers to one another only for the impious or the ignorant; power and sanctification are bound by essential relations. The great master possessed all the powers, because he was holy; and he was holy, because he forgot himself entirely for his brethren. Soul drawn from love, it is the work of love that leads to sanctification; because it alone justifies us. Infirm man, and in need of the spirit, thou wouldst not remain in idleness, if pride did not hold thee back, and if thou didst not believe thyself to have everything. Art thou not in captivity, like the Hebrews? Why wouldst thou not think, like them, of thy homeland? Where is the man who carries everywhere the sorrow and the feeling of his own misery? He shall watch to obtain the longing of the spirit. He shall agitate himself within his trouble, like a traveler surprised by darkness in the midst of an unknown country, until the Lord is moved with zeal for the earth, and has pardoned his people; Until the Lord has said to him: I will send you grain, wine, and oil, and you shall be filled with them; and I will no longer abandon you to the insults of the nations.
