1303 give anything except according to the shadows he has allowed to accumulate within himself. You do not have the first notion of the true, if you believe there can be no men preserved. You will rarely find them, these preserved men, among those who, being advanced in age, have spent their lives within the shadows. But you would easily find them among children, and among those who have preserved their holy character. Let us seek the living region: our living principles shall thereby be given still more life, and the reflections we shall receive there shall be pure; or if the impure mingles itself there, it shall be so easy to discern, that it will draw from it nothing but confusion. Is there not a frontier place within creation? and could the impure ever pass beyond forty-nine? Truth had appeared; and at her presence the blind saw, the deaf heard, the lame walked upright, and the sick were healed. Thou hast shown thyself, human doctrine: and those who saw have become blind; those who heard have become deaf; those who walked have become lame, and those who were sound have become sick. Sad victims, do you know how this truth will treat you? She has regenerated those who were infirm
2* 304 MAN at his coming, because they were so through ignorance, and because the light had not yet appeared for them. But you, who had seen it, that light; you, who had been warned a thousand times of its presence, you have let it evaporate! Since you have nothing, even what you have shall be taken from you. You teach that there is a void within nature. Why, then, these innumerable shades, which bind together so well all substances, that there is not a single point through which action could escape? If everything is full of action, how could there be a void of results? You have still further misunderstood moral nature, in confounding it with perishable nature! Human doctrine, O human doctrine, let my people go, that they may offer me their sacrifices! The human soul must exist beyond the ages, because life was given to it by the principle of life, and because the Sovereign of beings could not annihilate life, without abolishing his own character, which is to be the living God. Human doctrine, O human doctrine, let my people go, that they may offer me their sacrifices! 2 14. It is, you say, the transitions and the connections that most embarrass writers. Are you ignorant that the connections exist within the things themselves? Men of light and of truth put few of them into words. Would you
3V 305 wish to judge only by words and by the framework, the elevated passages of holy scripture? You will see in them nothing but obscurity, disorder, and confusion. Would you wish to examine them with more care, and to solicit their understanding, raising yourself at the same time that you ask to be raised? you will find within them vast and imposing relations. See what the transitions of the sacred writers are. They consist, almost all of them, in a single conjunctive particle; because they never speak, except in the name of the Lord, and because the name of the Lord binds everything together, as it has known how to produce everything. Sometimes they even begin their writings and their discourses with it; because the things they present to us are in connection with those they hide from us; Because these chosen men never departed from the presence of truth, and were always united to him who has neither end nor beginning. You have made a similar error, when you judged Moses a materialist, on the grounds that he seems to speak rarely a spiritual language to his people. This proof would appear to you quite feeble, if you read the scriptures with the understanding that they make germinate at every step; and you would soon say to yourselves: It was no more necessary to speak of the spirit to the Hebrews, than it would be to speak of armor and of warriors to two armies already in each other's presence.
