1If it is, then, exclusively through it that things manifest themselves, nothing without it can become sensible; now, being unable here below to know except through the sensible, how shall we succeed in it, if this same active and intelligent Cause does not act itself with us, and does not perform what it alone can perform within the Universe? We see, then, what the absolute necessity is that the two faculties of man be always guided and sustained by this universal temporal Cause; it will not give to man the idea of the first Being of which it is the first acting Cause, but it will make known to man the faculties of this first Being, by manifesting them through sensible productions; it will likewise not give to man the idea of a cult toward this first Being 3, but it will clarify his ideas upon this object, and, in rendering sensible to him the faculties of this first Being, it will likewise render sensible to him the sure means of honoring him. It is here that I see all the doubts of man cease, and all the variations that are their consequence: this active and intelligent Cause, being appointed to actuate and to direct everything, cannot fail to reconcile everything, once its power is employed; and the sole
2220 Of Unity within Worship. sole and unique means man has of not deceiving himself is not to exclude it from any of his acts, from any of his institutions, from any of his establishments, just as it is not excluded from any of the regular acts of Nature. Then man will be certain of knowing the true relations of what he seeks; there will no longer be disparity between the Religions of Peoples, since they will all have the same light; there will no longer be, among them, difficulties upon dogmas, nor upon worship, since they will know the first reason of things; in a word, everything will be in agreement, because each will proceed according to the true Law. We can, then, no longer doubt that the reason for all these differences the nations present to us within their dogmas and within their worship comes from the fact that, within their institutions, they have not relied upon this active and intelligent Cause, which alone ought to have guided them, and which alone could have reunited them; we can, then, no longer doubt, I say, that its Light is the sole point of rallying; that outside it there is no other hope than error and suffering, and that it is to it alone that this invincible truth essentially and by nature belongs — that outside the center there is nothing fixed. I shall not be suspected, I hope, from
3Of Unity within Worship. 2ZI from this exposition, of wishing to establish equality and indifference between the diverse cults in use among the Peoples of the earth, and still less of wishing to teach the uselessness of a cult. On the contrary, I announce that there is not a single People that has not felt its necessity; I announce, further, that this cult must exist as long as there shall be men upon the earth; but that, so long as they are not sustained by a support common to them, it is inevitable that they be divided, and, consequently, it will be impossible for them to attain the end they propose to themselves. Thus, not only do I maintain the necessity of a cult, but I show still more clearly the necessity of a single cult, since it is a single Chief, or a single Cause, that must direct it. Nor should I be asked, at present, which of all the established cults is the true cult; the principle I have just laid down must serve as the answer to all questions upon this subject. The cult that shall be directed by this active and intelligent Cause will necessarily be just and good: the cult where it does not preside will certainly be null or bad: such is the rule. It is for those who, among the different nations, are charged with instructing men and guiding
