1Immutability of their Principles. 87 This is how, in distinguishing bodies from their Principles, the Observers would have avoided the dangerous error they now strive in vain to palliate, and would have taken great care not to attribute eternity and immortality to the material Being that strikes their senses. I agree with them upon the daily course of Nature; I see every form come into being and perish, and I see them replaced by other forms; but I shall take great care not to conclude from this, as they do, that this revolution never had a beginning, and shall never have an end, since it does not, indeed, take place, nor manifest itself, except upon bodies, which are passing, and not upon their Principles, which never receive from it the least injury. Once one has fully conceived the existence and the stability of these Principles, independently and separately from bodies, one must grant that they could have existed before these bodies, and that they may still exist after them. I shall not join to this reasoning proofs upon which one might refuse to believe me, but they are of such a nature that it is no more within my power to doubt them, than had I been present at the formation of things. Moreover, the numerical Law of Beings is an irrevocable testimony; One exists and conceives itself independently of every other number; and, after having given life to them throughout the course of the Decade, F4 it 88 Of the Emanations of Unity.
2it leaves them behind and returns to its Unity. The Principles of bodies, being one, can, then, be conceived alone and separated from every form of matter, whereas the least particles of that matter can neither subsist, nor be conceived, without being sustained and animated by their Principle; just as we conceive numerical Unity as being able to subsist apart from other numbers, though none of the numbers subsequent to Unity can find access into our understanding, except as the emanation and the product of that unity. In a word, if we wish to apply here the fundamental maxim established above, concerning the inequality that necessarily exists between the generating Being and its production, we shall see that, if the Principles of Matter are indestructible and eternal, it is impossible for Matter to enjoy the same privileges. Yet this assertion of a necessary inequality between the generating Being and its production might have left some anxiety concerning the nature of man, who, having taken his birth within an indestructible source, ought, being inferior to his Principle, not to have the same advantage, and consequently be capable of destruction. But a simple reflection will dispel this doubt. Though Matter and man have equally Of Secondary Beings. 89
3a generating Principle, it is far from being the same one. The generating Principle of man is Unity; this Unity, possessing everything within itself, communicates to its productions likewise a total and independent existence; so that it can well, as chief and principle, extend or restrict their faculties; but it cannot give them death, because its works being real, what is cannot not-be. It is not so with Matter, which, being the product of a secondary Principle, inferior and subordinate to another Principle, is always within dependence upon the one and upon the other; so that the concurrence of their mutual action is absolutely necessary for the continuation of its existence; for it is :1 constant that, when one of the two ceases, bodies are extinguished and disappear. Now, the birth and the end of these different actions manifest themselves clearly enough within bodily Nature, to demonstrate to us that Matter cannot be durable. Besides, recognizing, as we must do, that the action of Unity, or of the first Principle, is perpetual and indivisible, we could not, without the grossest error, attribute the same perpetuity of action to the secondary Principles that engender Matter. This is why the Author
