1Secondement , il faut placer au rang des Végétaux tout Etre qui , ayant son matras dans la terre, fructifie ainsi par l'action de deux agents , & manifeste une production , soit au dehors , soit au dedans de cette même terre. Enfin , on doit regarder comme Minéraux tous les Etres , qui ont également leur matras dans la terre , & y prennent leur croissance & leur végétation, mais qui , provenant de l'action de trois agents , ne peuvent donner aucun signe de reproduction , parce qu'ils ne sont que passifs , & que les trois actions qui les constituent, ne leur appartiennent pas en propre. Ces règles , une fois établies , pour savoir si un Etre est Végétal ou Animal , il faut voir s'il tire sa substance des sucs de la terre , ou s'il se nourrit de ses productions. S'il est attaché à la terre , de manière qu'il meure , lorsqu'il en est détaché , il n'est que Végétal. S'il n'est point lié à cette même terre , quoiqu'il se nourrisse de ses productions , il est Animal , quel qu'ait été le moyen de sa corporisation. La différence , je le sais , est infiniment plus difficile à faire entre le Végétal & le Minéral , qu'entre le Végétal & l'Animal , parce qu'entre les Plantes & les Minéraux, il y a une si grande affinité , & ils ont tant de facultés qui leur sont communes . 5 8 Progression Quaternaire universelle, communes , qu'il n'est pas toujours aisé de les démêler.
2Cette difficulté vient de ce que la différence des genres de tous les Etres corporels eft toujours en proportion géométrique Quaternaire. Or dans l'ordre vrai des chofes , plus le degré des puissances est élevé , plus la puissance est affoiblie, parce qu'alors elle est plus éloignée de la puissance première , d'où toutes les puissances subséquentes sont émanées. Ainsi , les premiers termes de la progression , étant plus voisins du terme radical , ont des propriétés plus actives , d'où résultent par conséquent des effets plus sensibles % & par-là plus faciles à distinguer : & cette force , dans les facultés , diminuant , à mesure que les termes de la progression se multiplient , il est clair que les résultats des derniers termes doivent n'avoir que des nuances en quelque sorte imperceptibles. Voilà pourquoi le Minéral est plus difficile à distinguer du Végétal, que le Végétal de l'Animal ; car e'efl: dans le Minéral que se trouve le dernier terme de la progression des choses créées. Il faut appliquer le même principe à tous les Etres qui femblent intermédiaires entre les différents règnes , & qui paroissent les lier , parce que la progression du nombre est continue , sans borne 6c sans aucune séparation ; mais Progression Quaternaire universelle. 59
3mais , pour connoître parfaitement la puissance d'un terme quelconque de la progression dont il s'agit , il faudroit au moins connoître une des racines , & c'est une des choses que l'homme perdit , lorfqu'il fut privé de son premier état ; en effet , il ne connoît aujourd'hui la racine d'aucun nombre , puisqu'il ne connoît pas la première de toutes les racines , ce que l'on verra par la suite. Il faut également appliquer le principe de la progression Quaternaire , aux Etres qui sont au dessus de la Matière 7 parce qu'il s'y fait appercevoir avec la même exactitude , & d'une manière encore plus marquée , en ce qu'ils sont moins éloignés du premier terme de cette Progression ; mais peu de gens me comprendroient dans l'application que j'en pourrais faire à cette Classe , aussi mon dessein & mon devoir m'empêchent d'en parler ouvertement. Si l'homme avoit une Chymie , par laquelle il pût, sans décomposer les corps, connoître leurs vrais Principes , il verrait que le feu efl le propre de l'Animal , l'eau le propre du Végétal, & la terre le propre du Minéral; alors il aurait des signes encore plus certains pour reconnoître la véritable nature à^s Etres , & ne serait plus embarrassé ,■ pour discerner leur Rang & leur Classe. 1Second, one must place, in the rank of Vegetables, every Being which, having its matrix within the earth, fructifies thus through the action of two agents, and manifests a production, either outside or within that same earth. Finally, one must regard as Minerals every Being that likewise has its matrix within the earth, and there takes its growth and its vegetation, but which, proceeding from the action of three agents, can give no sign of reproduction, because they are merely passive, and because the three actions that constitute them do not belong to them in their own right. These rules once established, to know whether a Being is Vegetable or Animal, one must see whether it draws its substance from the sap of the earth, or whether it nourishes itself upon its productions. If it is attached to the earth, in such a way that it dies when detached from it, it is only Vegetable. If it is not bound to that same earth, though it nourishes itself upon its productions, it is Animal, whatever the means of its embodiment may have been. The difference, I know, is infinitely more difficult to establish between the Vegetable and the Mineral, than between the Vegetable and the Animal, because between Plants and Minerals there is so great an affinity, and they have so many faculties that are common to them. 5 8 The Universal Quaternary Progression, common to them, that it is not always easy to disentangle them.
2This difficulty arises from the fact that the difference among the genera of every bodily Being is always in a Quaternary geometric proportion. Now, within the true order of things, the higher the degree of powers, the more the power is weakened, because it is then more removed from the first power, from which every subsequent power emanates. Thus the first terms of the progression, being nearer to the radical term, possess more active properties, from which consequently result more perceptible effects, and thus easier to distinguish: and this force, within the faculties, diminishing as the terms of the progression multiply, it is clear that the results of the final terms must possess but nuances, in some sense, imperceptible. This is why the Mineral is more difficult to distinguish from the Vegetable, than the Vegetable from the Animal; for it is within the Mineral that the final term of the progression of created things is found. The same principle must be applied to every Being that seems intermediate between the different kingdoms, and that appears to link them, because the progression of number is continuous, without bound 6c without any separation; but The Universal Quaternary Progression. 59
3but, to know perfectly the power of any given term of the progression in question, one would at least have to know one of the roots, and this is one of the things man lost, when he was deprived of his first state; indeed, he knows today the root of no number, since he does not know the first of all roots, as will be seen hereafter. The principle of the Quaternary progression must likewise be applied to Beings that are above Matter 7, because it makes itself perceived there with the same exactness, and in a manner even more marked, in that they are less removed from the first term of this Progression; but few people would understand me in the application I might make of it to this Class, so my design and my duty prevent me from speaking of it openly. Had man a Chemistry by which he could, without decomposing bodies, know their true Principles, he would see that fire is the property of the Animal, water the property of the Vegetable, and earth the property of the Mineral; then he would have even more certain signs for recognizing the true nature of Beings, and would no longer be embarrassed to discern their Rank and their Class.
