Mais je parle du véritable Est dont le lever du Soleil n'est que le signe indicatif, & qui se manifeste visiblement & plus juste dans l'à-plomb & la perpendiculaire ; de cet Est r qui par son nombre quatre , peut seul embrasser tout l'espace , puisqu'en se joignant au nombre neuf ou celui de l'étendue , c'est-à-dire , unissant l'actif au passif, il forme le nombre treize, qui est le nombre de la Nature. Il n'est donc pas plus possible de trouver cette longitude sur la Terre, que de concilier la ligne droite avec la ligne courbe , & que de trouver la mesure de l'étendue & le mouvement, dans l'étendue; nouvelle preuve de la vérité des principes que nous avons exposés. Car la Lune est neuvaire , comme étant attachée à la Terre qui n'a que des courbes en latitude ; le Soleil , au contraire, quoique désignant la latitude par le Sud , est néanmoins dans son Est terrestre, ou dans le lieu de son lever, l'image du principe de la longitude, ou de la ligne droite , & comme tel il est quaternaire. D'ailleurs il est clairement distinct de la région de la Terre , a laquelle il communique la réaction nécessaire à sa faculté végétative , nouvel indice de son activité quaternaire ; en un mot > son quaternaire se manifeste sur la Lune même par les quatre phases que nous appercevons sur elle , & qui se déterminent par ses différentes positions , par rapport au Soleil dont elle reçoit la lumière. Ainsi appliquant à cet exemple le principe qui nous occupe pour le présent , on verra clairement pourquoi le calcul Solaire & le calcul Lunaire sont incompatibles , & que le vrai moyen de parvenir à la connoissance des choses , est de commencer par ne pas les confondre , mais de les suivre & de les examiner chacune selon le nombre & les Loix qui leur sont propres. Je montrerois par le nombre de cette Terre, quel est son emploi &sa destination dans TUnivers ; cela pourroit même nous donner des indices sur la véritable forme quelle porte, & répandre encore plus de jour sur le système actuel qui ne l'admet pas comme immobile, mais , au contraire, comme parcourant un très-grand orbite. Car les Astronomes se sont peut-être un peu trop pressés dans leurs jugements ; & avanc de donner toute leur confiane à leurs observations, ils auroient dû examiner lequel parmi les Etres corporels doit agir le plus, ou de celui qui donne la réaction, ou de celui qui la reçoit ; si le feu n'est pas le plus mobile des Eléments , & le sang plus agile que les corps dans lesquels il circule ; ils auroient dû penser que la Terre, quoique n'occupant pas le centre des orbites des Astres , pouvoit cependant leur servir de Récipient, & dès- lors devant recevoir & attendre leurs influences , sans être forcée d'ajouter une seconde action corporelle, à l'action végétative qui lui est propre , <Sc dont ces Astres sont privés. When I said that the East was fixed, it was well seen that I did not speak of the one given by the rising of the Sun, since it changes every day. Moreover, the sort of longitude the Sun gives in this manner is always but horizontal in relation to us, like latitude, and, for this alone, very defective. But I speak of the true East, of which the rising of the Sun is but the indicative sign, and which manifests itself visibly and more correctly within the plumb-line and the perpendicular; of this East, which, by its number four, can alone embrace all space, since, in joining itself to the number nine, or that of extent, that is to say, in uniting the active to the passive, it forms the number thirteen, which is the number of Nature. It is, then, no more possible to find this longitude upon the Earth, than to reconcile the straight line with the curved line, or than to find the measure of extent and of movement within extent; a new proof of the truth of the principles we have set forth. We must apply this Law, further, to another observation, and say that it is by reason of this same difference between the number four and

For the Moon is novenary, as being attached to the Earth, which has only curves within latitude; the Sun, on the contrary, though designating latitude through the South, is nevertheless, within its terrestrial East, or within the place of its rising, the image of the principle of longitude, or of the straight line, and, as such, it is quaternary. Moreover, it is clearly distinct from the region of the Earth, to which it communicates the reaction necessary to its vegetative faculty, a new indication of its quaternary activity; in a word, its quaternary nature manifests itself even upon the Moon, through the four phases we perceive upon it, which are determined by its different positions, in relation to the Sun from which it receives its light. Thus, applying to this example the principle that now occupies us, one will see clearly why the Solar calculus and the Lunar calculus are incompatible, and that the true means of arriving at the knowledge of things is to begin by not confounding them, but by following them and examining each according to the number and the Laws proper to it. 3Moon, and, consequently, to the Earth of which it is the Satellite! I would show, by the number of this Earth, what its employment and its destination are within the Universe; this might even give us indications upon the true form it bears, and shed still more light upon the present system, which does not admit it as immobile, but, on the contrary, as traversing a very great orbit. For the Astronomers have, perhaps, been a little too hasty within their judgments; and, before giving all their confidence to their observations, they ought to have examined which, among bodily Beings, must act the most, whether the one that gives the reaction, or the one that receives it; whether fire is not the most mobile of the Elements, and blood more agile than the bodies within which it circulates; they ought to have thought that the Earth, though not occupying the center of the orbits of the Stars, might nevertheless serve them as Receptacle, and, from then on, being bound to receive and to await their influences, without being forced to add a second bodily action to the vegetative action proper to it, and of which these Stars are deprived. Finally, the simplest experiments upon the Cone would have proved to them the true form of the Earth; and we could offer them, within the destination of this same Earth, within the rank it
