1198 L’ H 0 M M E for an intermediary to be of use to us? But let us take care not to place her above her own rank, lest we multiply the Gods, as the blind and idolatrous nations have done. 1 29. Do not be discouraged, if success does not always answer to thy labors. The plowman opens the bosom of the earth, casts the seed into it, and covers it over; then he withdraws, and leaves his field to the care of Providence. Even should the harvest come to fail, is he any the less an irreproachable laborer for it? But if, after many efforts, thou didst feel thy soul rise up and love its God, how couldst thou regret thy toil and thy labors? The happiness of man is in the hand of God, and it is he who places upon the person of the wise the marks of honor that belong to him. It is he who tells us: consider the eye of the prophet, read there the secrets and the dispositions of the heart of God, as you read, in the eye of a king's minister, the secrets and the dispositions of the heart of his master. For I have made the eye of the prophet the perceptible measure of my affections, and I trace there, in vivid letters, my ordinances and my designs. This is why I have established the eye of the prophet to be the lamp of your heart and of your spirit; but if you neglect to consider its light, and to guide yourselves by its brightness, I close the eye of the prophet, and your whole being remains in darkness.
2N 4 199 1 JO. With whom shall I give myself over to joy upon the earth? It is with him whom I shall have been able to make the witness of my tears, and who shall have been able to grieve with me over the ills of — Light-hearted men, were I to take part in your joys, you would believe still less that you have tears to shed. I would become complicit in your delusions, and would give you my hand to descend still further into the abyss. Come, afflicted men, come, all you who groan over the enormity of evil. Let us weep together, let us give ourselves no rest, until the goad of charity has pierced even to the very sources of our life. When our heart has bled; when our blood has washed the wounds of some of our brethren: then we shall be able to sing canticles of jubilation. These delights are unknown to you, men given over to the slope of the torrent; you do not know what joy is, just as you do not know what sorrow is. You are carried away, like a child, at the sight of those trivial objects that attach and amuse you; and, like the child, you are insensible and strangers to the ills that devour the human family. Where will you find measure? The child is as far from it as you are; but he tends toward it through his growth and his efforts:
3200 MAN And you, each of your steps serves only to lead you further away. Is it not, then, only through a violent shock, and after having rolled to the very bottom of the precipice, that you can return to the path of the work and of the jubilation? 13 1. Followers of poetry, if you read the sacred scriptures, what wonders would they not offer you! You would see there stones speaking within temples built with blood. You would see there the warriors of iniquity descending to the depths of the abyss, and resting there, their heads leaning upon their sabers. You would see there the Divinity fleeing from her temples, and finding no more room there, so many are the idols. You would see there divine charity, herself loosening the bit of the wrongdoers and the slaves, and offering them nourishment with her own hand. You would see there sublimity, strength, variety; you would have only the embarrassment of choice, and never the fear of scarcity. But the hand of wisdom blinds your profane eyes, when you wander through this rich and vast meadow. Without this, the flowers you would gather there would serve as fuel for your pride, and as sacrifices to the prostitution of human opinions. You make of your own light, and of the talents of your own mind, a mercenary speculation; you resemble Judas, who sold the Savior for a few pieces of silver,
