SECTION 15.

By the seven double consonants, ‏בגד כפרת‎ were also designed seven worlds (αἰῶνες), seven heavens, seven lands, (probably climates,) seven seas, (probably around Palestine,) seven rivers, seven deserts, seven days a week, seven weeks from Passover to Pentecost, there is a cycle of seven years, the seventh is the release year, and after seven release years is jubilee. Hence, God loves the number seven under the whole heaven. (In the whole nature.)

Commentary

Historical§001

"Two stones build two houses, three stones build six houses": the passage counts the ways a set of letters can be ordered, and its numbers are the factorials, 2, 6, 24, 120, 720, until "seven build five thousand and forty houses". With the two hundred and thirty-one gates of Chapter II, which are the pairs that can be drawn from twenty-two letters, it is one of the earliest written treatments of permutation and combination, and historians of mathematics cite it as such. It is also the one place where this book can be checked by arithmetic rather than by tradition: Kalisch's note 38 reports that his printed Hebrew read five thousand and four, and he restores 5040 because the count demands it.
