1The action of light on the superior animals can be local, or direct, and general, or indirect.
2The first is effected at the point where the light falls; the second is due to products that the direct luminous action has generated in the exposed parts.
3Apart from the phenomenon of local action, or mimicry — by which certain animals (the chameleon) change the colour of the skin under the influence of light, and which has a defensive significance for the species — we can say that light works, in general, upon the superficial layers of the skin.
4The greater the absorption of the rays, the less the depth they reach in the deeper layers of the skin.
5The most penetrating rays are those of 600 micromicrons of wavelength (yellow), and those of length below or above that are less so.
6The ultraviolet, consequently, have a minimal power of penetration.
7The blood, circulating in the arteries, veins and capillaries of the skin, modifies the absorption; for, functioning like a red filter, it deflects from the yellow toward the red and ultra-red, and thus absorbs almost all the radiations except the infra-red.
8To the subcutaneous connective tissue there arrive, consequently, exclusively radiations of long waves and thermal effect, while the effect of light in the superficial layers is the chemical one.
9The consequences of the action on the skin are: hyperaemia, which depends only on the thermal effect (light bath); erythema, which appears not immediately but after a certain time — that is, after the formation of active substances in the cells of the epidermis; formation of pigment in the epithelia, due to the chemical as well as the thermal action, whose significance is the protection of the tissues against the harmful action of light; increase of the cutaneous secretions and, above all, of sweat (thermal effect) and of sebum (thermo-chemical effect).
10The general action of light on the metabolism of the superior animals and of man is the following: a) Diminution of the sugar in the blood.
11b) Increase of the combustion of fats in the obese, and accumulation of the same in the thin (regulating action).
12c) Increase of the assimilation of nitrogen.
13d) Increase of the calcium of the blood.
14The actions on the physiological functions are: a) Cutaneous vasodilation, circulatory modifications in other organs and, in consequence, diminution of the blood pressure.
15b) Stimulation of haemo- and lymphopoiesis.
16c) Excitation of the nervous system and of the muscular movements.
17The action on the cellular protoplasm is exclusively chemical (photochemical action).
18The proteins are modified in their colloidal state and, if the action is intense, a gelification can be produced, and even a precipitation of the micelles suspended in the protoplasmic colloid.
19The phenomena that can be produced on fats or carbohydrates are: hydrolytic scission, oxygenation, etc.
20In general, all these actions on the protoplasm are slow; but they can be enormously accelerated by the presence of the salts of iron, manganese and other metals, which behave as true photochemical catalysts.
21Before ending the study of the influence of light on living beings, we must make mention of an important phenomenon known under the name of photodynamism, or photosensitisation.
