1As regards the constitution of climates, we know how temperature exercises a preponderant influence, and we know too how fauna and flora are, in the various parts of the terrestrial surface, in direct dependence on the climate and, consequently, on one of its most important constituent factors: temperature. 2We all know the exuberance of the tropical flora and the steppes of the cold regions; the variable nature of the various animal species according to the regions in which they live; and the migration of some during certain seasons of the year — that is, during those epochs in which, owing to the inclination of the earth's axis of rotation and the movement of precession of the equinoxes, the intensity of thermal energy on the earth varies.
3We know, moreover, how temperature influences the evaporation of the waters on the surface of the soil and of the seas — waters which, transformed into clouds, will fall again upon the soil, fertilising it.
4All these variations of temperature cannot fail to exercise their influence on living beings which, as is known, possess a delicate mechanism for regulating it, to adapt themselves, within certain limits, to its variations.
5To be synthetic, we shall treat of the influences of temperature on living beings, and of their reactions to it, speaking first of the influence exercised by its positive polarity, or heat, and afterwards of that exercised by its negative polarity, or cold.
6Influence of heat.—We have already said that every living being possesses a specific temperature.
7Now, for its life to develop normally, the temperature of the ambience in which it lives must not pass certain limits, for heat as for cold, because its mechanisms for regulating the internal temperature can function only between those limits — which, moreover, vary from being to being.
8The greater part of vegetable and animal cells cannot live in an ambience where the maximum temperature is above 40º - 47°.
