Acompound of Tdlisa (D. R. — Kdrfisa), Eld , Gairika ) Udira and Samkha (conch-shell) pasted with breastmilk should be applied to the affected organ in the manner of an Anjana (eye-salve). As an alternative, the powder or the Rasa-kriyA of Dhdtaki and Syandana (D. R. — Chandana) mixed with breast-milk should be used as an Anjana. Gold-leaf rubbed with breastmilk, or the flowers of Kims'uka rubbed with honey, or of a compound of Rodhra , Drdkshd , sugar, Utpala , Vacha and Yashti-madhu rubbed with breast-milk should be used as an Anjana. Barks of Vamakaf pasted in cows milk, or (red) Chandana wood, Udumbara and Toya (Vâld) pasted in the same, or Samudraphena rubbed either in honey or breast-milk should be likewise applied to the eyes in the manner of an Anjana. 5 .

Aschyotana : — Rodhra , Yashti-madhu , Drdkshd , sugar and Utpala should be soaked in breast-milk. It should then be folded inside a piece of silk ( Kshauma ) and employed as an Aschyotana (eye-drop). A compound of Yashti-madhu and Rodhra rubbed in clarified butter should be similarly used. A compound of Kddmari (G£mbh£ri) Dhdtri, Pathyd (Haritaki) and 7J>/tf{Vâla),

* For preparation of Rasa-kriyi see Chapter XVIII, ibid, t According to Dallana, ‘ Yamaha* Imeans ‘ Rockanika’. It may also mean * Karnika'ro? which is not accepted either by Gay or by Dallana. It may also mean * Chandana" which is most probably the meaning here.

as well as that of Katphala and Ambu (VA 1 A) should be similarly* prepared and applied* 6.

All the above remedial measures with the exception of blood-letting should be resorted to in a case of Amlddhyushita-Drishti and Sukti-pAka. The medicated Ghritas known as the Traiphala Ghrita or the Tilvaka Ghritaf should be prescribed, or simply old and matured clarified butter should be given in such cases. 7.

In a case of Sukti-pika an Anjana with cooling drugs should be speedily employed in the event of the Doshas being located in the lower part of the eye. Fine powder ofVaidurya gem, Sphatika (crystal), Vidruma (coral) and Muktd (pearl), Samkha (conch-shell), silver and gold mixed with sugar and honey and used as an anjana would prove a speedy remedy in a case of £>ukti-pAka. 8.

Clarified butter should be administered in a case of Dhuma-dârsin and the procedure and the remedial measures laid down in connection with Rakta-pitta and Pitta-origined Visarpa (Erysipelas) as well as the Pittasub-duing remedies J should be likewise employed therein. 9.

Thus ends the tenth chapter in the Uttra-Tantra of the Sus'ruta Samhitd which deals with of the curative treatment of PitUbhishyanda.

* In the first two compounds, some take ‘Taya* and ( Ambu 9 for water. But Dallana having explained 'Toy a? as ‘ Valaka? in a preceding compound we adopt that meaning of the word here also.

t Traiphala-Ghrita is piepared by duly cooking clarified butter with the Kalka and decoction of Triphal a'. For Tilvaka-Ghritaisee chapter III. Chikistsita-Sthâna.

X By Pitta-subduing remedies Dallana means the remedial measures laid down in connection with the treatment of Pitta-Vidagdha- Drishti.

The patient should be made to fast on each fourth day and to take a potion of Tikta-Ghrita*f in the morning, and his diet should consist of such articles as do not lead to the aggravation of the bodily Kapha. 2-3.

Tender twigs or leaves of Kutannata , Ashpotd , Phanijjhaka , Viha, Pattura , Pilu , Ark a and Kapittha\ should be employed in (mildly) fomenting the affected eye. A thin plaster composed of Vdlaka , S* tint hi, Devaddru and Kushtha , should be likewise applied to the affected eye. 4.

Hingu , (Asafoetida), Trip hold, Yashti-madhu , Saindhava , Prapaundaika , Anjana (black Antimony), Tuttha (Sulphate of copper), and copper pasted together with t See Chikitsila-sthdna, chapter IX.

* The word ‘Atha’ (3TO) in the text means says D^Pana, that the local vein should be opened as the best resource, when fomentation, etc. would fail to effect a cure.

% In place of " Kutannata?'* and “ Arid ’ both Vrinda and Chakrapani read ** Suras a ’’ and “Arja”. S'rikantha the commentator of Vrinda however is of opinion that Arka should be better reading in place of that of "Arjc?\ , ,
