The text is shown on its own: no facing layer is held for this issue.
In the succeeding divisions of the work will be found translations of “The Universal Reformation of the Whole Wide World the “ Fama Fratemitatis, or. Discovery of the meritorious order of the R. C. the “ Confessio Fratemitatis R. C. ad Eruditos Europae ; ” and the remarkable Hermetic romance entitled “The Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosencreutz,” containing the mystical and symbolical history of an artist or prepared student, who, anno 1459, was supernaturally and magically elected to be present at the accomplishment of the Magnum Opus.
The philosophical and scientific doctrines developed in these documents are compared with the magical theorems of Paracelsus, and the historical traces of the Rosicrucians in early times are appreciated at their true value. Every accredited theory as to the authorship and character of the manifestoes is impartially and adequately discussed, particularly the claim which has been advanced by Arnold, Herder, Buhle, and other authorities, in favour of Johann Valentin Andreas.
The succeeding chapters comprise : I. A historical and bibliographical account of the immediate result of the manifestoes in Germany, with abstracts of the Rosicrucian and anti- Rosicrucian publications during the first quarter of the seventeenth century. These abstracts include the “ Echo of the God-illuminated Fraternity of the worthy order R. C.,” the “ Confessio Recepta," “ Rosa F loresceus,'* “ Fama e Scanzia Redux," the pamphlets of Julianus de Campis, Andrew Libavius, &c. II. Historical and biographical sketches of the representative Rosicrucian apologists — namely, Michael Maier, Robert Fludd, Thomas Vaughan, and J ohn Heydon, with an account of their philosophical opinions, and a complete history of the Rosicrucians in England, comprising the extraordinary Heydon documents— namely, “The Rosie Cross uncovered, and the places, temples, holy houses, castles, and invisible mountains of the brethren discovered and communicated to the world,” the allegorical voyage of John Heydon, &c. &c. III. A short history of Rosicrucianism in France. IV. An essay on the connection between the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons. V. The influence of Rosicrucian ideas upon literature and legend.
