## The Venerable Master AMO: Spiritual Authority at the Russian Imperial Court

### Historical Account of Maître Philippe and the Secret Imperial Martinist Lodge

I have already referred to you, dear brothers and readers, in the previous issue of **[translate:LA INICIACIÓN]**, something about the Venerable Personality of Master AMO, the "Spiritual Master" of Papus and many of his continuators.

In today's article, I wish to add some details so that it may be possible for you to feel the Master better, KNOWING him more.

I already told you that Master AMO was the Chief of the Theurgical School of Lyon, and I referred to some cures made by him. I will tell you now what happened in that epoch at the Court of Russia, when Papus put the Master in relation with the Tsar and with the Empress.

## THE IMPERIAL MYSTICAL INCLINATION

Tsar Nicholas II had marked inclination toward mysticism. He had no male heir; the Empress had given him only daughters. He had a professor from Vienna brought, Dr. Schrenk, who claimed to be able to remedy this; but, despite a very severe regimen, the Empress had, once again, a daughter. Father John of Kronstadt, celebrated Russian monk who made beautiful cures through prayer and laying on of hands, was also called and was no more successful than Dr. Schrenk.

Papus, already famous in Russia, gave conferences and performed mystical works at the Court and spoke of his Spiritual Master before the highest personages of the Court. Grand Duke Vladimir then went expressly to Lyon and succeeded in having AMO come to the Russian Court in the year 1900. The wife of Grand Duke Nicholas, Duchess of Leuchtenberg, presented him to the Empress, who became very interested in all the mystical path recommended and taught by Master AMO.

## THE MIRACULOUS PROPHECY

AMO declared that the Empress would this time have a male child, and as it happened thus, the prestige of AMO increased notably. The Tsar even granted him the rank of Division General, with the right to wear the uniform (which must have made the Master smile...).

But, more interesting than that graduation, the Master was granted the right to enter at any hour into the apartments of the Tsar and Tsarina without even having himself announced, an honor very rare and notable in such a Court, where the all-powerful etiquette was inexorable.

## THE MEDICAL DIPLOMA CONTROVERSY

The Tsarina, unable to conceive that a Being endowed with such powers should not be the bearer of a title, had the University of Moscow grant him the title of doctor of Medicine; but as that title did not permit the practice of medicine in France, the Empress herself requested the French ambassador to make "démarches" so that the equivalence would be recognized by the French Government, which, faithful to the characteristic routine of that epoch, refused.

Such was the affection and respect of the Tsarina for the Master, that she did not give up. When later the Russian sovereigns were guests of France, at Compiègne, one night, after an official banquet, the Empress spoke privately with Waldeck-Rousseau, then President of the Council, and asked him to obtain the doctor's diploma for Master Philippe.

The President of the Council found himself in a rather violent situation and explained that in France such a thing was not possible without examinations, etc...

The Tsarina insisted, saying that perhaps the President of the Republic could do something in that direction. W. Rousseau affirmed that only a Committee of great doctors could influence, and even then requiring classical examinations...

"Master AMO is, however, a very great doctor," responded the Tsarina, who left the President of the Council rather stunned...

## THE SPIRITUAL ADVISOR ROLE

Master AMO continued for some years being the principal advisor of the Tsar, and to his influence is due the Tsar's project of seeking to establish among men the kingdom of peace through universal disarmament.

Helped by the King of Denmark and by the grand dukes, Master AMO introduced into the Court the Martinist and occultist doctrine.

A secret Martinist Lodge was founded in the Imperial Palace itself. The Tsar was the President. The directive members (Unknown Superiors) were chosen from among the grand dukes and the counselors of the Empire. Frequent sessions of evocations and mystical ones were held, directed by Master AMO.

Frequently the father of the Tsar, former emperor Alexander III, was invoked or even evoked, and he would make his son promise to maintain intact, despite everything, the Franco-Russian alliance. In that sense the role of Master AMO was very important, since to this is due, in large part, that Tsar Nicholas II remained distant from the Germanic influence, already growing, at that time, in the Russian Court.

The Empress always had great veneration for the Master, and when he had already returned to Lyon, she still gave him a splendid automobile, a "very magnificent" thing in that epoch...

Master AMO, this dear and venerable being, whom one never invokes in vain when it is done in a profound, sincere and disinterested manner, had a life full of extraordinary facts from which we can draw teachings, such as the one I will relate to you now:

The question was made in such a disrespectful tone that someone asked the newcomer if he came to consult the master for some personal illness.

"No," responded the visitor; "I don't believe in such childish things; I come only to ask for information for a third party; I don't need fantasies."

At that instant AMO came out of his little reserved room and, immediately approaching the newcomer, asked him to pass into it, which surprised everyone, because it was a very rare "honor" to be received there. Papus later related that the following happened in the little room.

The Master faced the insolent one and asked him: "Do you remember, sir, unbeliever, what you were doing on a Friday, on such a date of such month and year, at three in the afternoon?"... "I will tell you: YOU WERE STRANGLING A WOMAN. No one saw you; nevertheless, the police will know it and will search for you; but, if you throw yourself, right now on your knees and ask FORGIVENESS FROM HEAVEN for what you did, you will not be found."

The "unbeliever" threw himself to the floor. He avoided prison, acknowledged remorse and acquired faith. This is one of the most beautiful MORAL AND SPIRITUAL CURES that we know of Master AMO.

I could tell you dozens of cases like this one, but, what for?

## THE DISCIPLESHIP REQUIREMENTS

To be a disciple of Master AMO it is not necessary to know BY CURIOSITY his cures; it suffices to understand his essence, the base and direction of his action: goodness, tolerance, truth and dedication to others.

Meditate on his acts, on his figure and, especially, on his name:

**AMO**: Sacred place of the valley of the Essenes, of the mystical "healers" among whom Master Jesus was initiated.

## THE FIVE JOURNEYS OF KNOWLEDGE

For this reason I will pass over the ceremony of Initiation of the 2nd degree, which consists, essentially, in five journeys, image of the five species of knowledge that the Companion must acquire, and which are:

**HUMAN LANGUAGE**: reflection of the Universal Verb, expressed in Acts.

**MUSIC or HARMONY**: result, in Man and in the Universe, of the ADEQUATE expression of said Verb.

**GEOMETRY** in its sacred sense, that is, the law of proportion, relation between parts and meaning of the diverse planes; secret, in a word, of the comprehension of the concepts of FORM, TIME and SPACE and of all the relations that Re-Unite said concepts in their active synthesis: Life.

**ASTRONOMY**: that is, the study of the Worlds that relate to our particular Macrocosm and Microcosm.

**TRUE HUMAN CONSTITUTION**: that is, not only anatomy and physiology, but, expanding the concept to all planes, its occult anatomy and physiology, that is, its spiritual bodies or occult senses.

Summarizing all this, primitive Masonry received from the Rosicrucians a marvelous symbol, which remained as key of the 2nd degree; effectively, the Companion Mason, to affirm his degree declares: "to have seen the flaming star" or flamigerous.

What is that star?

It is a marvelous pentacle, a five-pointed star, with one extremity toward the sky and two toward the earth. In the center of said star, masonry puts the letter "G".

It is the image of the Great Universal Man and also of the particular man. It is the expression of the Law, active, living, in all its details:

A head, free and omnipotent, because it is situated above and in the central line, balancing all the force of the being.

Two arms, one to the right, another to the left, instruments of action, of realization of the chest, of the heart—in what refers to the moral and soul plane—and also instruments of the head, which can work with them to the right or to the left, positively or negatively. It must be realized that these terms, used here in cabalistic sense, therefore comprehend ALL possible meanings, that is, they indicate the material or physical, soul, magnetic, moral, devotional possibility and finally also the spiritual, because these hands can rise to the height of the head in a physical (or abstract) gesture of prayer, of invocation, of blessing.

Two feet, indispensable physical base of the temple that is the human body, physical base or two columns of every temple, whether ritualistic, whether worldly, since every Universe, like every being, has its form "permitted" by the law of bi-polarization which is the condition of form itself, law of symmetry in all its meanings, law of compensation and correlation in all its expressions.

## THE MYSTERY OF THE NUMBER FIVE

The degree of Companion Mason turns entirely around the mysterious symbolism of the number five, since the age of the Companion is 5 years, his battery of 5 blows and his march of 5 steps, that is, the three of the Apprentice plus one to the right and another to the left, which brings again to the central line of the Temple, after having compared, for the first time, in an initial personal experience, the path of Good and Evil, but both in positive form, that is, of pure experience and consciously.

The marvelous symbol of the five-pointed star, that flaming pentagram that all initiates and magicians have used and revered as the most powerful sign of human power, as the representation of human divinity itself, is thus the key of the 2nd degree and we said that in the center of said pentagram was the letter "G".

The knowledge of form must precede and serve as base for the study of that which is contained or "manifested" by form, that is, spirit. Occult geometry, complement of physical geometry, is thus the base science of Initiation and leads to the knowledge of the Hidden Stone, of the human diamond... which also has its geometric rules of crystallization, cleavage, refraction and measure. Man is immortal because he generates himself, indefinitely, since at each instant of the present he generates the immediate future. Humanity is immortal because generation is constant and eternal, although the forms of generation change, the generative process continues operating. Nature is immortal because everything transforms, nothing is lost, everything is "generation" of new forms and new energies. The Worlds generate themselves by transmuting and the alternative succession of Manvantaras and Pralayas, of Creation and Destruction, of Day and Night, of Being Born and Dying, of Being and Existing, need as base the process of GENERATION. Everything is eternal generating.

Everything is One. Diversity is apparent. Everything is in essence the same. Variety resides only in form. Everything unites in its origin as in its finality, in its real internal matrix. Everything must unite mentally also to arrive at supreme knowledge, which has been called GNOSIS for being the synthetic reunion, the magnificent quaternary that reunites in the Unity called Gnosis, the four branches of the cross, on which are written the words: Philosophy, Religion, Art and Science. To make the complete synthesis, to pass from Knowledge to Comparison and from this to Synthesis, is to be really an Initiate and to have the secret of GNOSIS.

## THE PREPARATION FOR MASTERY

On this base, the Companion Mason, already possessor or, supposed such, of the synthesis of cosmic and human organization in INTELLECTUAL and THEORETICAL FORM, is going to present himself, after having finished his time as Companion, to the degree of Master Mason, which in all Masonic Rites has been considered as the complete mason, that is, as the possessor of the keys that must suffice the Initiate to follow the true path.

In the next article I will begin to examine that marvelous degree of teaching that conserves, in its simple symbolism, the keys of all the old Mysteries and the reason for being of all Initiations.

### Aspects, Orbs, and the Technical Construction of Horoscopes

To finish with the question of aspects, I am going to transcribe the fundamental base that astrological tradition gives for the measurement of these aspects which, not always being exact, because they are not always formed by planets that are at the EXACT distance given in the table of aspects (see No. 3 of [translate:La Iniciación]), nevertheless have force and must be taken into account.

The exact aspect is called **PARTILE**, and is considered such when there is no more than one degree of distance from the exact theoretical measurement.

**Example**: two planets at 60 degrees of distance, exactly, are in PARTILE SEXTILE; but they are also so from 59 to 61 degrees, and so on.

The non-exact aspect, that is, non-partile, is traditionally called **ORBITAL**, that is, not formed by the Bodies of the Planets themselves but only by their ORBS of INFLUENCE. Some astrologers teach that aspects that have 2 to 5 degrees of approximation are called COMMON, and only those of greater amplitude would be orbital. Such a way of proceeding, which can be adopted in practice, is convenient and then shows the difference between partile, common and orbital aspect.

## THE ORBITAL SYSTEM EXAMPLES

**For example:**

- Two planets, separated 59, 60 to 61 degrees.................... **PARTILE SEXTILE**

- Two planets, separated 55, 56, 57, 58 or 62, 63, 64, 65 degrees.................... **COMMON SEXTILE**

- Two planets separated 52, 53, 54, or 66, 67 and 68 degrees **ORBITAL SEXTILE**

Clearly this form, I repeat, is what can be used in practice with good results. But the traditional and more scientific form is to consider that each star has a DIFFERENT ORBIT, some greater, others lesser, and that, according to the importance of the aspect (greater or lesser) one must consider reduced the distance at which said orbits of influence (or orbs as they are also called) have reciprocal action and, therefore, form aspect.

I will transcribe from the book of the Martinist astrologer Julevno, the following table that summarizes all this and will explain the manner of using it:

The manner of using this table will be easily seen by the examples below, since it suffices to add the orbits of the planets considered and divide that sum by 2 to see if they are in aspect or not.

### **1st Example:**

In a horoscope, the Moon is at 20° 10' of Aries and Mercury is found at 28° 10' of Cancer. Is there an aspect or not?

The total distance, from 20° 10' of Aries to 28° 10' of Cancer is 96°, therefore, if there is an aspect, it is of SQUARE.

By the table we see immediately that the Moon has a total orb of 12°; for square we must add half, that is 6°.

We also see that Mercury has an orb of 7°, half is 3° 30'.

We add:

½ Orb of the Moon............ 6°

½ Orb of Mercury............ 3° 30'

Total........................ 9° 30' which, divided by two, gives as result 4° 45', which would be really the greatest distance that could exist of MORE or LESS over the 90°, for the Moon and Mercury to be in square. Since they are at 96°, THERE IS NO SQUARE.

### **2nd Example:**

Sun at 10° of Aries and Mercury at 21° of Aries. Is there any aspect between them?

We see that the Sun has an orbit of.............. 17°

And Mercury has an orbit of.................... 7°

Total......................................... 24° which divided by two, gives as result 12°.

Therefore, while the Sun and Mercury are not more than 12° of distance apart, there is STILL orbital conjunction between them. And, since in our example they are at 11°, there is, therefore, ORBITAL CONJUNCTION.

### **3rd Example:**

Sun at 10° of Aries and Jupiter at 19° of Leo. Is there an aspect?

The total distance, being 129°, if there is an aspect it would be of TRINE.

We see in the table, that for Trine, the solar orbit is............ 11° 20'

And, also for TRINE, that of Jupiter, is........................ 8° 00'

Total.................................................. 19° 20', which divided by two, gives as result 9° 40', which means that, up to 129° 40' of distance, there is still orbital trine and, therefore, we have the Sun and Jupiter in ORBITAL TRINE.

And so on for the other planets in the table.

## CONSTRUCTION OF A THEME

We are going to begin today to study how the Astrological Theme is constructed, that is, the map that represents the state of the Heaven seen from the Earth situated, by hypothesis, at its center, and considering the horizon of the place of birth as Ascendant. I am going to enunciate, first, the basic rules that we will go into in detail later, until we see their application in a complete example.

### **1st RULE** – To make a horoscope, we need: name or initials of the person, place, year, month, date and hour of birth.

### **2nd RULE** – We must verify if the hour they give us as CIVIL TIME, is true local time, if it is standard time (by time zone) or adjusted to some special meridian, and also if it is not modified by summer or winter time. All this to obtain TRUE LOCAL TIME.

### **3rd RULE** – We must verify on a map or atlas, the coordinates, that is, the LONGITUDE (East or West) and LATITUDE (North or South) of the place of birth. We must look carefully if the longitude of the map refers to Greenwich (Observatory near London) or if it refers to another meridian, in which latter case we will have to make corrections as we will see when applying this rule.

### **4th RULE** – We must look in EPHEMERIDES of the year of birth, the SIDEREAL TIME (s.t. or, in English: s.t., "Sidereal Time"), taking said Sidereal Time from the day of birth, if this occurred after noon, or from the previous day if the birth was BEFORE noon. We note this data in the special place of the model of which we will speak later.

### **5th RULE** – To said S.T. (Sidereal Time) we must ADD the interval, that is, the lapse of time elapsed from the PREVIOUS NOON until birth (between previous noon and TRUE LOCAL TIME).

### **6th RULE** – SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. Only in the case that the birth occurred in the southern hemisphere (IF THE LATITUDE IS SOUTH) do we then have to ADD to the previous result TWELVE MORE HOURS.

### **7th RULE** – INTERVAL CORRECTION. This correction is TEN SECONDS for each hour of interval (see Rule 5) and proportional for fractions of hour that this interval may have. This correction is always ADDITIONAL, that is, it is always added.

### **8th RULE** – LONGITUDE CORRECTION. It is a correction of TEN SECONDS FOR EACH 15 DEGREES OF LONGITUDE, or proportional for fractions of 15 degrees of longitude that the place of birth has with respect to Greenwich (see Rule 3). This CORRECTION IS ADDITIONAL (added) when the longitude is WEST and SUBTRACTIVE (subtracted) when the longitude is EAST.

### **9th RULE** – Now making the sum of the factors obtained with rules 4, 5, 6 and 7 and adding the result of rule 8, or subtracting it (according to what rule 8 itself says) we will obtain a general result that will be the GREENWICH SIDEREAL TIME for the moment of birth. But this result cannot be SUPERIOR to 24 hours and, if it were, we would have to subtract 24 or 48 hours to then obtain the final result, which we inscribe as true SIDEREAL TIME OF BIRTH.

### **10th RULE** – With this Sidereal Time (S.T.) thus obtained, we go to the BOOK OF HOUSES (House's Tables) and look in it for the page that contains, at the same time, THE LATITUDE OF BIRTH (or very approximate) and the S.T. that we had obtained in rule 9.

The Table of Houses is composed of ONE column with Sidereal Times and several large columns, subdivided into SIX SUB-COLUMNS that bear as titles the number of the houses of the horoscope; 10, 11, 12, 1st or Asc. (Ascendant), 2 and 3. In the example, we will see later how this is used, since there we are going to find the zodiacal signs, with their degrees and minutes, that we must place over the six cusps of the houses of the same numbering as the sub-columns, if the birth was in the Northern hemisphere and in the opposite houses if it occurred in the Southern hemisphere.

This is done thus because the Tables of Houses are almost always established for the Northern hemisphere, which is always indicated in the book that contains them.

We have, thus, houses 10, 11, 12, 1st, 2 and 3 (Northern births) or the opposites, that is 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 (Southern births) provided with determined zodiacal signs, as we will see in the complete example that we will give later.

If one cannot, at the beginning, place both feet on the thighs, one foot will be placed on one thigh for a certain time, and the other foot on the other thigh later, to be able thus to accustom oneself to the placement of both feet separately, which will be easy to carry out after some practice. Exercising in this half posture called ARTHA PADMASANA for some days, one will gradually achieve complete PADMASANA.

**VIRASANA**, which means "hero's posture," is done in the following manner:

Sit comfortably on the floor, place the right foot on the left thigh and the left foot under the right thigh.

Do PADMASANA, then rise up on the knees and raise the hands as Figure No. 2 indicates.

When this ASANA is done, during the first days it is necessary to put something behind the back to not lose equilibrium; so the best thing is to take this posture leaning against the wall.

Being also necessary, in the first days, to put something under the knees to not hurt them, the best thing is to do this posture on a mattress until becoming accustomed, and then it will be done on the floor with only a carpet.

**SAMASANA** is done in the following manner:

Place the left heel on the upper extremity of the right thigh and the right heel on the upper extremity of the left thigh. During this Asana it is necessary that the body be quite straight and without moving it.

**KARMUKHASANA** is done in the following manner:

Sit in PADMASANA, take the big toe of the right foot with the right hand and the big toe of the left foot with the left hand, making thus, with this position of hands and elbows, a symmetrical posture.

**UTTIDA-PADMASANA** is done in the following manner:

Sit in PADMASANA and place the palms on the floor at the sides, as can be seen in Figure No. 3. Supporting oneself on the palms, lift the body, doing everything possible so that there are no tremors during this levitation movement. Retain the breath all the time that it lasts. Only when one returns to recover the initial position, that is, seated again, is the air that was inspired and retained at the moment of levitation expired.

The other variants of PADMASANA will not be given here for not considering them of practical utility for students. We will now study the second and most important ASANA, called **SARVANGASANA** (the posture of all members).

## THE MYSTERIOUS SARVANGASANA

This Asana, if practiced constantly, is extraordinary in its results due to its enormous benefits, both physical and mental and spiritual. It was given the name SARVANGASANA, because in it "all the members" are put in movement and, as a consequence, the internal organs receive different stimuli.

We are going to explain its technique:

Lie down on one's back on the mattress (at the beginning; and then on a carpet) and slowly raise the legs in the air. Then elevate the trunk until remaining in an almost vertical position, as Figure No. 4 indicates.

Make the shoulders rest by supporting the lumbar region on the hands, while the elbows rest on the floor; then press the chin against the chest, thus forming a closure called in yogic terms **JALANDHARA-BANDHA**.

During this exercise perfect equilibrium must be maintained, not allowing the body to move from one side to another and always keeping the legs well extended. Upon finishing this ASANA, return to place the legs very elegantly on the floor again, avoiding tremors. All the weight of the body, then, rests on the upper part of the back and the elbows as the only supports (Fig. No. 4). During this posture it is necessary to concentrate thought on the thyroid gland, which is situated in the anterior region of the neck and exactly in front of the larynx. Inspire and retain the breath slowly and then expire the air, repeat these respiratory movements three times.

SARVANGASANA can be practiced twice daily, morning and evening.

## THE EXTRAORDINARY BENEFITS OF SARVANGASANA

**The thyroid gland** performs an important hormonic function in the organism. We all know that the thyroid contributes powerfully, through its hormonic secretion, to the equilibrium of different organic functions (circulatory, respiratory, metabolic, genital, etc.), together with endocrine glands, such as, for example, the hypophysis, the pineal, the suprarenal, the sexual glands, etc. If the thyroid becomes ill, all the other endocrine glands are affected by this dysfunction, and in the organism are established those syndromes known in Medicine as consequences of endocrine disorders. SARVANGASANA is performed especially to tonify the thyroid and, consequently, favor the harmonic functions of the organism.

**SARVANGASANA determines hyperemia** in the spinal arterial plexuses, in the periphery of the origin of the spinal nerves. This hyperemia determines better nutrition of the nervous centers as a consequence of the prana contributed by the blood; and we know that, where there is prana, there is Life and Health, which is the result of a harmonic and perfect physical, mental and spiritual equilibrium. This ASANA permits, then, greater elasticity of the spinal column and, as a consequence of the improved blood circulation, prevents the arteries from hardening prematurely, which is, as we know, a sign of approaching old age.

**Such is the importance** that the Venerable "Gurus" of India concede to this Asana that they also call it the "Mysterious" Asana.

**Guru Sivananda** recommends it very especially to his disciples together with another called **SIRSHASANA**, which we will study later. This Venerable Guru says that it suffices to put into practice three fundamental Asanas to maintain the body and mind in perfect health, and assures that it is not necessary to take walks or do other kinds of violent exercises. This Guru is a great Asana-Yogin who shows, as a result of his long practice, the benefits of Asana Yoga in his hieratic face and majestic bearing, in all his features of super-man. In India he enjoys great veneration, not only on the part of his disciples, but also on the part of the people in general.

**This Asana retards old age** and aids chastity, called in Sanskrit **BRAHMA-CHARYA**. It has the peculiarity of rejuvenating those who have prematurely lost youth and fortifies and renews sexual potency. It cures many exhausting diseases and especially "nocturnal seminal emissions." It acts as a tonic and as a powerful purifier and detoxifier of the blood; it cures diseases of the ovaries, of the bladder and other kinds of sexual diseases. It is recommended to women in case of sterility and to young girls to maintain bodily elasticity. SARVANGASANA also awakens **Kundalini** and increases the "digestive fire" called **JATHARAGNI**. It cures dyspepsia, constipation and other chronic gastrointestinal diseases. In short, in a word, it tonifies and vivifies the organism.

In these lines we propose to expound some ideas suggested by the Pantacle of Martinism—due to Louis-Claude de Saint Martin—taking as base an explanation by Papus that we translate from his "Traité Méthodique de Science Occulte"—Volume II—page 96.

## THE ETERNAL CIRCLE

**"God, the first principle of the universe, is represented by a circle (symbol of eternity)."**

The circle, symbol of eternity, is the simplest curve that reunites the properties of equal curvature at all its points, of geometric symmetry and in general, of symmetry in all aspects that we consider it, symbol of justice and equilibrium, we feel that it should express the nature of Eternity.

According to the new concepts of physical science, it is a figure finite and infinite at the same time. It has no beginning nor end and its extremes are confused.

Says the [translate:Bhagavad Gita] in Stanza IV, No. 6: "Although I have no beginning nor end and am Lord in all creatures, enthroned in my material nature, I am born by virtue of my magic power."

**The symmetry, expression of God**, we observe in many facts of Nature, and penetrating ourselves with this concept, we will surely see that in its most subtle form it is in all facts of Nature.

If in the forms that impress our senses we find a repeated property, nothing more natural than to think of an underlying Unity. The process of finding symmetry in all things, subtilizing the concept itself, carries implicit a simple and grandiose fact; and it is that in all things there exist common properties. In other terms, when we find a property in any phenomenon or entity of the Universe, surely the same property will exist in all phenomena or entities if we sufficiently spiritualize the sense of the property.

Regarding the law of symmetry, we will add that it not only implies equilibrium, but is an expression of beauty and, moreover, of utility.

Let us see an example. We say that a glass should be symmetric to be useful as such; in effect, a common glass is symmetric, as we know in the ordinary sense of the word. Now then, someone will say that utility subsists even though the glass loses its symmetry, adding that it could even be made circular on one side and square on the other. Here in reality, symmetry has been lost because we have considered it in the restrictive sense, since, if we say, "a glass is symmetric when it has matter on one side and another of a certain plane," we have amplified the concept and maintained, therefore, the principle that we sustained.

Even when we were changing the conditions of our object, we could, in final analysis, resort to the most general concept of symmetry saying that the existence of anything, in any plane, carries implicit the law of equivalence or compensation, which says that the sum of values in one sense is equal to the sum of values in the opposite sense.

Thus we arrive at a simple and, therefore, beautiful conclusion: a thing is useful if it exists; but its existence depends on the law of symmetry. That is to say, that symmetry is a necessary condition of utility.

Another example. Let us suppose a deformed man. He lacks symmetry in the ordinary sense of the word; but contemplating this being from a more profound point of view, we could think, for example, that this deformity obeys some "Cause." And then the miracle of this thought of love is produced, showing us a new sense of symmetry; the existence of a cause, on one side; the effect or deformity of the man, on the other; and the man himself, product or center of symmetry, as synthesis.

## THE HEXAGON OF CREATION

**"The action of eternity, passing from potency to act, is symbolized by the mystical action from the center to the circumference, by the radius projected six times around the circle. Hence the hexagon of the six periods of creation. The central point forms the seventh period (rest)."**

The action of Eternity, passing from the state of Potency to that of Act, we can express geometrically as an expansion from the center of the circle to the circumference. This act of sacrifice of God carries implicit, in its realization, one of the transcendental numbers of mathematical science, the number called "pi," which is the relation of the length of the circumference to the diameter.

This number is denominated, in mathematics, irrational and transcendent. The irrationality consists in that it is not possible to obtain it with a finite number of divisions of unity; and the transcendence in not being able to return to unity, starting from said number, through the two operations of addition and subtraction.

Mystically the irrationality would be the approach to the Goal through the evolutive process, and this realized, would be equivalent to dissolving in the All, since said number is born in Creation.

As for transcendence, being exclusively of the mental plane the operations of addition and subtraction employed, it is not possible to obtain a result that corresponds to the divine plane.

We will see, in another article, the mystical relation between this number and another called "e," which plays a role of equal importance in Science.

Now then; each side of the hexagon of Creation has the length of the radius, which suggests to us that the duration of a period of Creation is equivalent to the duration of the attitude of the Creator; that is, we see in the sense of time, that the nature of the Creators is equal to that of the Creator. Marvelous Ternary of the Creator, the Created and Life!

After the involution from the center of the circle to the circumference, we have the opposite process of evolution, from this to the center. Here appears the eternal law of symmetry in an oscillation from the center outward and reciprocally, whose existence we can sense by analogy.

## THE CREATIVE EMANATIONS

**"It is in these creative emanations (aeons) where nature is going to evolve with its two currents of evolution and involution (ascending triangle and descending triangle). We observe that Nature does not reach God. It arrives only at the creative forces emanated from him."**

Says the [translate:Bhagavad Gita], in Stanza VIII, Nos. 3 and 4: "Brahman is the imperishable and supreme; its particular nature is denominated Supreme Spirit; and the emanation that gives origin to all beings has the name Action." "Supreme Being is my perishable nature; Supreme Divinity is the masculine Creative Principle, and I myself, incarnated in this body, am the Supreme sacrifice, oh you, the best of mortals!"

These passages explain to us why Nature does not reach God, but does reach the creative forces emanated from Him; between manifested Nature and the originating cause, the days and nights of Brahma are produced.

Let us remember again the sublime poem cited, in its Stanza VIII, Nos. 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, where it expresses something with simple clarity:

"Those who know that the Day of Brahma has a duration of a thousand ages and that the Night endures another thousand; those are the ones who know Day and Night."

"At the advent of Day, the manifested universe surges from the unmanifested; and upon the arrival of Night, all vanishes in that same thing that is called unmanifested."

"All that multitude of beings suddenly come to existence, disappears upon the arrival of Night, son of Pritha, and surges anew, without their own will, when Day comes."

"However, above this unmanifested, there is in truth another Unmanifested Being, who is eternal and does not fall into destruction when all that exists is destroyed."

"That which is designated by the name of Unmanifested and Imperishable, is denominated Supreme Goal; those who come to reach it never return. This is my most excellent mansion."

## THE TRIANGULAR SYMBOLISM

The ascending triangle, with vertex upward, expresses the spirituality of beings, as well as gives an idea that, upon elevating ourselves, we are in a more subtle vibratory state. From a point of view of knowledge it will tell us that, as we ascend, we comprehend facts with a lesser number of principles.

If we consider that the descending triangle expresses the same values, but inverted, the same reflections will result, but changed in sense.

The equilateral triangle, the simplest regular polygonal expression is at the same time, the only non-deformable one. What perfect analogy exists between this fact and that every truth, the simpler, the firmer! We could say that a truth expressed geometrically as a regular polygon, reaches its maximum perfection and, consequently, its maximum beauty, when it transforms into a triangle.

The whiteness of the ascending triangle symbolizes spirituality, the march toward light; the darkness of the descending one symbolizes materialism, the path of shadow.

The linking of the two triangles, which determines a new hexagon similar to that of Creation, suggests to us the idea that the involutive and evolutive processes are inseparable in all manifestations of the Universe. They are in dynamic equilibrium and in such a way, that when the process inclines toward the evolutive side there is progress, and regression when the contrary occurs; in the first case one goes discovering the Real, the Universal; in the other the sinking in Maya, the apparent diversity, is produced.

## THE HUMAN CROSS

**"Moreover, from the center of the universe to God himself, the potency of man takes birth, linking the effects of divinity to the fatalism of Nature in its triple Nature, synthesized, by the unity of Free Will, in a quaternary (the Cross). This Cross, image of man, unites the center of the universe (human soul) to God himself."**

The Cross is the symbol of the opposition of good forces over evil ones, of spirit against matter, of active over passive. Its two arms, infinite because they reach the circumference of the Absolute, express, the vertical, spirituality, the horizontal, materialism. The geometric disposition of these two lines forming a right angle, the maximum possible between them, signals at the same time the maximum divergence of their meanings, as was to be expected.

We will say now, considering the Cross in general, that if we suppose it as a reference system we can take as imaginary the vertical axis, with unity i = √-1, mathematical symbol of the spiritual unity; and the horizontal axis as real with unity 1, mathematical symbol of the real unity.

In this system to multiply by "i," that is, to spiritualize, is equivalent to turning the unity toward the left in correspondence with the heart; this movement engenders the sacred Swastika Cross, the Sign of Fohat.

On the other hand, if we attribute to the vertical axis the unity "j," as mathematical symbol opposed to "i," that is, to spirituality, to multiply by "j" is equivalent to producing a turn toward the right, in correspondence with force, engendering the black swastika cross.

Finally, to complete the ternary, when the third unity "k" is attributed to said vertical axis, we no longer obtain a turn, but a vertical descent, which determines for us the center of symmetry of the two previous turns, that is, indecision between the white force and the black force.

The first unity corresponds to the circular law of harmony; the second to the hyperbolic law of repulsion, and the third to the parabolic law in which union is lacking, because it does not close, and repulsion is also lacking, since it corresponds to the case in which the other branch of the hyperbola has disappeared or is about to be born.

For making concentrations, exercises and even acts of profane life, the use of horary astrology is very useful and, in certain cases, indispensable.

For this reason I will give, in this and successive articles, the manner of utilizing this technique.

When the Sun is born, the first of the ASTROLOGICAL HOURS OF THE DAY begins, which are twelve, and whose variation in duration depends on the ARC OF THE DAY, that is, the time that passes between the rising and setting of the Sun.

**Example:**

Let us suppose that the Sun rises, in Montevideo, at a certain time of year, more or less at 7:15 and sets at 17:45. We would then have a day arc of a total duration of 10 hours 30 minutes. Ten hours thirty minutes equals 630 minutes. Dividing these 630 minutes by 12 ASTROLOGICAL HOURS, it results that each HOUR OF THE DAY lasts currently, about 52 minutes and a half. The hours of the night will last SO MANY MORE MINUTES than 60 as are lacking from those of the day, that is, in this case, about 67 minutes and a half.

When the Sun rises, not only does the FIRST ASTROLOGICAL HOUR OF THE DAY begin, but also that first hour is governed by the same planet as the day of the week considered.

Those who want to remember this easily can form with the first syllable of the planet names, the following formula: **SA-JU-MA-SOL-VE-ME-LU**, and will never forget such order.

Since you can find daily in civil newspapers the indication of the HOUR of SUNRISE and that of SUNSET of the Sun, it is easy for you to make the calculations, guided by our example, until later, with practice, you will see that it is very simple.

We walk back, silent, given to profound meditations and our minds were filling more and more with the beautiful and holy image of the Beloved Guru Maharishi, who smiled at us with infinite love..., and the memory of his farewell words impressed us: "It would be necessary that you visit the Temple of Madura...", and we remembered that the Guru was born there, in a small village near Madura, called [translate:TIRUCHUZHI]...
