The Venerable Master **Marquis STANISLAS DE GUAITA**, together with **PAPUS, BARLET, PELADAN** and others whom students will come to know in the articles we will publish about this Most Venerable Order, founded the **KABBALISTIC ORDER OF THE ROSE CRUZ** in the final years of the last century in Paris.

Under the direction of **Bhagavan Náráyana**, the great Hierarchs of our race, eternal vigilants of its necessities, emerge from remote ages from their sacred retirement among the **Himalayas**, and from time to time supply more visible help and wellbeing to suffering humanity.

During the first period of the **Kali-Yuga** (Black Age), twelve thousand years ago to date, they constituted themselves anew under His divine influence, having as their unique motto: **to enable humanity to advance more rapidly than before on the path that must lead it to its ultimate goal**.

**[translate:"SUDDHA DHARMA MANDALAM"]** is the name of this August Assembly of Hierarchs. Its existence and constitution was known, until recently, only to a few superior initiates among men.

However, in **1915**, broader publicity was permitted and **Dr. Subramani Iyer** was chosen to make the first public announcement regarding this ancient Esoteric Organization, its construction, its principles, and its objectives.

**Dr. Swami Subrahmaniayananda** (mystical name of Dr. S. Iyer) was initiated as a member of the **Suddha Dharma Mandalam** on **May 7, 1915**, and was invested with the insignia corresponding to the **Authority of External Initiator**.

Other higher initiations were conferred upon him in **1915** and in **1923**, during the **Maha-Yagna** (Great Sacrifice) on ritual date. On this matter, we will give special information to those who dedicate themselves to the mystical path, opportunely.

On **December 5, 1924**, at 8 hours and 40 minutes, **Dr. Swami Subrahmaniayananda** died at **"Guindy House"**; and until today there is no knowledge that the Great Hierarchs of the **S.D.M.** have conferred upon another Initiate the **Authority of External Initiator**.

**THERE IS THEREFORE, CURRENTLY NO EXTERNAL INITIATOR** of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam. There exist, however, some study centers, regularly founded in the time when the Most Venerated Subrahmaniayananda lived.

The one who signs this article has received, from the **Chilean Section of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam**, the due authorization to divulge the elementary teachings of said Association and also abundant material to distribute to sincere students of the spiritual path of **Yoga**. This, in what refers to the human and visible organization.

On the other hand, the one who signs these lines has received by other means the secret and practical part to guide those who wish to truly serve toward union with the superior and internal part, under the auspices of the **Great Hierarchies**.

I cannot initiate anyone in the **Suddha Dharma Mandalam**, for I have not merited such Authority, but the fact of having received special indications, which carried to practice have permitted "linking," if one wants to call it thus, some pure hearts with the influence of the **S.D.M.**, has created for me the duty to continue doing so, with love, discernment, and fraternal effort to serve.

It is for this reason that to my Brothers of the **Martinist Orders** and of the **O.K.R.C.**, as well as to all the sincere and disinterested of this continent and especially on the Atlantic side, I will try to be useful in this path, which is one of those that most easily permits Western man to assimilate the marvelous teaching of **yoga**, in its philosophical and mystical aspects, synthesized in a clear, practical, and precise path.

All of them attack Truth in the **CHEST**—that is, no longer in its FORM, like the previous one, but in its **LIFE**, in its effects, in its applications, in its **LAWS**.

The third attacker, **JUBELAM** (plural ending, careful), is the image of enemies who are fully conscious, knowers of Truth who deform it through **HATRED OF GOOD**; they are the Black Magicians, the Venal or Corrupted Associations, who attack Truth, no longer in its FORM, no longer in its LIFE or LAW, but even in its very **PRINCIPLE**.

In earlier times, Psychology properly said formed a body of doctrine united to **Metaphysics**, sometimes to **Cosmology** and also to **Physics**.

**Aristotle** was the first to compose a **"Treatise of the Soul"** that can be considered as the precursor of modern Psychology.

However, this science, such as we understand it today, can be affirmed to have its origin in **Wundt**, who published in 1873 his famous treatise entitled **"Manual of Physiological Psychology."** According to Viqueira, this work refounds the diverse hypotheses, previously diluted in a multitude of metaphysical systems.

## **THE APPARENT CONTRADICTION**

At first sight one would say that both definitions are contradictory; while the first induces one to think that Psychology occupies itself with "all" the mind, the second would seem to affirm that it only occupies itself with "a part" of the mind, Consciousness.

**There is no such thing, however.**

The difference is that some suppose that the mind "divides" into parts, while others conceive it as a continuum.

Both points of view are equally exact, for if on one hand it is not possible to establish in the mind any solution of continuity, on the other it is perfectly reasonable to speak of a **conscious, unconscious and even superconscious** life, at least for normative and didactic purposes.

But all these definitions do not suffice to encompass the entire conceptual sphere of **Transcendent Psychology**. And they do not suffice, because the mind, such as our psychology conceives it, represents a **function of the brain** and, consequently, a miraculous product of somatic activity.

**Rational and Experimental Psychology** has, in our judgment, the defect of **isolating the phenomena it studies**. As soon as we disconnect the relationships that unite the phenomenon with the universal medium, of which it forms part, we sacrifice the synthetic procedure to the comfort of the analytical procedure. And if the latter results the most indicated for the necessities of the Psychology we could call "scientific," it is not so for **Transcendent Psychology**.

Let us see in what follows what are the conclusions of one and the other, regarding the definition of mind.

### **"Scientific" Psychology's Premise**

"Scientific" Psychology poses the following premise: When attention is directed to a determined object, how is perception produced? Is it something of the mind that reaches the object, or is it something of the object that reaches the mind? Said in other words: does the sphere of the mind reach to the object, or is it the object that penetrates the mind?

**Transcendent Psychology**, on the other hand, affirms this other premise: The perceived object and the organ seat of perception are **"impregnated"** in a continuum which is called mind. More clearly, it postulates the **first Hermetic principle** which says: **THE UNIVERSE IS MENTAL**.

An oriental observation of what both psychologies understand by mind will demonstrate to us, once more, that the discrepancies respond uniquely to the special point of view in which each one situates itself. In effect, "scientific" Psychology poses a **double interrogative** that expresses the two poles of the synthesis that preoccupies it:

- **First pole**: the mind reaches the object.

- **Second pole**: The object reaches the mind.

In contrast, **Transcendental Psychology**, based on the **theory of opposites** and on **analogical reasoning**, makes the **synthesis that reunites both poles**: **the universe is mind**. With this the opposites disappear and with them the interpretation difficulties that bring so many discussions in the terrain of philosophical speculation.

Barely solved this difficulty, a second immediately arises, no less important: **if the universe is mental, who or what expresses itself in this mind?** This poses the grave problem of the existence or non-existence of a Being or principle from which the universe emanated.

But before taking sides in such a thorny question, we will open a brief parenthesis to establish a convention with the reader. In what follows, we will abbreviate the expression **Transcendent Psychology** with the initials **p.t.**, just as we will represent with the lowercase **p.c.** the simplification of what we have called, very capriciously certainly, **"scientific" Psychology**.

Let us continue. For **p.c.**, the universe or sensible world is something like a **symbiosis between matter and energy**; in contrast, the biological unity which is called man contains a **third principle**: **life**, which does not seem reducible either to energy or to matter.

Let us begin by noting an **evident contradiction**: if the world is a compound of matter and energy, man is something distinct from the world, since he is composed in addition of the **principle life**, which does not seem to be contained in the former. If it is, **where did life come from?**; if it is not, **how can the universe be something different from itself?**
