## The Venerable Personality of Master Papus

### Complete Biography of Western Occult Tradition's Founder

In the closing years of the last century, two figures incontestably dominated the initiatic panorama by the magnitude of their achievements: Helena Petrova Blavatsky, animating with her personal sacrifice and her wisdom all the diffusion of oriental doctrine, and Papus, animating with the same means, the divulgation of occidental doctrine. Between both there are more than one point of resemblance: marvelous psychic and mystical powers, an enormous culture, an extraordinary faith in the Masters and an unbreakable WILL TO SERVE, that no setback, no ingratitude, no calumny, no incomprehension, detained, nor would have been able to detain. Between both cases there is a point of contact: an enormous, admirable labor made of constant social work, of countless travels, of verbal and active magnetism and an astonishing literary and didactic production. In both, still, there is a common bond: the admiration and respect for Master Eliphas Levi, who would have preceded both in the comprehension and realization of the union of oriental mystical doctrine with the gnostic and cabalistic mysticism of the occident.

Notwithstanding all that has been said, to the fact that others more hidden, more unknown to the public and even to many students have been more elevated, perhaps, in knowledge or in spirituality. But, as REALIZERS, Papus and dear H. P. B., did not have in that epoch anyone who could compare to them.

It is necessary that all our martinist brothers know Master Papus well, reason for which, I must dedicate to him a series of articles that permit leaving in sufficient light the value of his work and the fundamental traits of the great initiator.

## THE MAN: BIRTH AND EARLY FORMATION

Let us see first, the man: he was born in Spain, in La Coruña, on July 13, 1865 (under Scorpio Ascendant). He was the son of a French chemist and of a mother born in Valladolid. At four years of age he went with his parents to Paris. He made excellent secondary studies, later enrolling in the Faculty of Medicine. There, the works of Dr. Luys on hypnotism and the "transfers" of diseases had already powerfully called attention. In 1883 (at 18 years of age) he had first contact with his initiator, Henri Delaage, and took from the "Nuctemeron," of Apollonius of Tyana, the symbolic name of PAPUS, under which he became subsequently so well known.

His doubts, however, were great, since his powerfully analytical and logical mentality prevented him and always prevented him from accepting what was not practically demonstrable and rigorously logical.

## THE DECISIVE SPIRITUAL ENCOUNTER

Shortly afterward, (Papus would be about 19 years old) a decisive event occurred. Papus had all the impatience of a "Scorpio," and his concepts of honor and the right to suppress noxious beings, made him, on a certain occasion, wait in the Philosophical Cabaret of "Chat Noir," for an individual who had slandered him in an infamous manner. Papus waited for him, revolver in hand, resolved to eliminate him. His enemy approaches; Papus sees him arrive under the pale light of the moon and prepares to shoot. At that moment they touch his shoulder. He looks to see who could be the inopportune one and remains amazed, a luminous being is near him and makes him lower his arm, saying to him:

"What are you going to do? It is not your mission to commit such violence. You must not let yourself be carried away by resentment. Forgive that man, Christ was covered by such opprobrium and, nevertheless, not only did he forgive his detractors, but he still prayed for them."

Papus bowed, meditating. When he raised his head, the luminous vision had disappeared; but never could Papus forget that first contact with the INVISIBLE. His path toward high initiation was open.

## THE INTELLECTUAL MASTER: SAINT-YVES-D'ALVEYDRE

He finds, effectively, shortly afterward, the Marquis Saint-Yves-d'Alveydre, his intellectual Master, as he always called him subsequently and thus received full Comprehension.

He resolved, however, to verify "in loco" the truth of the old traditions and embarked toward the orient. Leaving through India as an occultist desirous of verifications, he returned as a definitive convert to the Elevated Practice of Service.

## THE MARTINIST REORGANIZATION

In 1887, with Augustin Chaboseau and others, he reorganizes Martinism, that is, the MARTINIST ORDER, of which his first initiator Henri Delaage, was one of the conserving Initiators.

From that epoch, his activity is extraordinary. From 1887 until his death, occurred in 1916, in barely 29 years of action, he realizes, in broad lines, the following:

Single first and married later, he spends almost all that he earns on travels, on editing works, on financing the organization of the Orders and on helping the needy.

## THE MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES AND ROLES

He carries, simultaneously the life of Chief Medical Officer of Hospitals, of Grand Master of some Masonic Rites, of President of the Martinist Order, of General Delegate and later of President of the Cabalistic Order of the Rose Cross, makes each year travels to Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and other countries. He takes care of his initiates and of all the external organization of the Orders. Without neglecting anything of all that, he writes, between 1884 and 1916, a total of more than 100 works: books, pamphlets, opuscules, among which some works are of great format and volume. But the most extraordinary is the following.

For each work, HE MAKES PERSONAL VERIFICATION, of all that they contain; he does not retreat before any experience; he learns languages; he makes laboratory experiments, those of magical evocation and, finally, meticulous documentary searches.

Honest like Eliphas Levi, he does not want to affirm anything that he has not documented with original documents or verified by personal experience.

Physically of extraordinary resistance, his gaze, which indicates an exceptional force of concentration of thought and of magnetic power, his physical and spiritual dynamism are spent by him without reserve, without measure, and the INVISIBLE responds to the extraordinary effort of Papus. The Masters, incarnated or of the Invisible, come to his call. Everything comes to his hands. Old archives of the Orders, rare documents, all the secret archive of Eliphas Levi, even the sword and the personal rituals of the Great Magus, everything is "brought" to Papus, by the most curious means and circumstances so that he REALIZES what his voluntary sacrifice, of each day, of each hour, of each minute, makes NECESSARILY POSSIBLE.

## THE COLLABORATORS AND SPIRITUAL PROTECTION

The most dedicated collaborators, the most faithful friends, the intellectual values of a Barlet or mystical ones of a Sédir (among many others) aid the work of the Great Divulgator, who has justly merited the name of "Balzac of Occultism."

His Spiritual Master, AMO, protects him, guides him and delivers to him the Key of the Spiritual World, and the forces of the spiritual plane unite in such form to the action of Papus, that we will see him affirm as a natural thing and that was fulfilled, that "while he lived, he would detain the Russian revolution."

## THE HEALING POWERS AND CHRISTIAN ORIENTATION

He cured the sick by radiating with profusion his personal magnetism and making call to the forces of the spiritual plane. For him, the central figure of all Western Initiation is the Christ, and we will see him take the clearly Rose Cross path through the christification of his personal doctrine.

He does not flee from the world nor refuse any form of aid to the Collectivity. When the war of 1914 breaks out, he takes his uniform of major medical officer of second class and dedicates himself at the front to caring for the sick and to alleviating the death of those whom it is not possible to save. When THOUSANDS owe him an easier detachment, an illumination "in articulo mortis," it is something that books do not say, but that is WRITTEN ON THE OTHER SIDE...

## THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

The abuse of GIVING his vitality and of rejecting any rest makes him exhaust his organism, and on occasion of a brief leave to go to Paris; upon arriving at the hospital of Charité (in which he had made his debut as a doctor) to visit his old friend Professor Sergent, he falls on the staircase, struck down by the effects of tuberculosis acquired at the front.

The Initiates will understand; that chest had given too much, had operated in itself the I.N.R.I. He had burned himself in life, in holocaust for the health of others, according to the aphorism of Eliphas Levi:

"THE VOLUNTARY DEATH BY ABNEGATION IS NOT A SUICIDE, IT IS THE APOTHEOSIS OF THE WILL."

Admirable interpretation of the Rose Cross symbol of the pelican, that opens its chest to feed the weak! Papus expected that death, since, days before he responded to a good woman who came to ask him for a new consultation for "next week": "Yes, but I will have to receive her in the astral."

## THE TRANSITION TO INVISIBLE GUIDANCE

And effectively, on October 25, 1916, he departed for the luminous regions, in which he continues directing the Invisible Chains of the Orders that he ANIMATED with his Life and with his Death.

In the following articles we will see in more detail his life and his action. I finish this one with the words that his great friend, disciple and collaborator, the mystic Sédir, pronounced over the tomb of Papus in the cemetery of Père-Lachaise in Paris.

Let us render to PAPUS the ONLY homage that he can accept: TO SERVE in the form in which he taught us to do it, through his teachings and, especially, THROUGH HIS LIFE AND THROUGH HIS DEATH.

## Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism (Continuation)

### The Hiram Legend and Master Mason Death-Resurrection Mysteries

We continue the account of the Legend of Hiram, as it is made in the Ceremonial of Initiation to the Third Degree of Master Mason:

The twelve Companions, fulfilling the mission that King Solomon confided to them, departed in search of the body of Hiram and of his assassins. They divided into four groups of THREE, and took the direction of the cardinal points.

## THE DISCOVERY OF THE ASSASSINS

One of these groups followed the course of the JOPPA river; of the three companions who comprised it, one, very tired, leaned against a great rock that contained a cavern and heard, through the crevice of the rock, a voice that said:

"Woe is me! rather that they had cut my throat, torn out my tongue and buried me in the sands of the sea, where the tide ebbs and flows, than to have been accomplice to the assassination of the Respectable Master Hiram."

And he heard another voice that said:

"And I would wish that they had torn out my heart and given it as food to the vultures rather than to have been accomplice to the assassination of such an excellent Master."

And he heard still another voice, saying:

"It was I who killed him; my blows were stronger than yours. I would wish that they had divided my body in the middle, throwing one part to the south and another to the north; that they had torn out my entrails, reduced them to ashes and thrown these to the winds, rather, than to have been the infamous assassin of our Most Respectable Master Hiram."

The Companion called his colleagues and they decided to capture the criminals, they brought them before the presence of King Solomon and he had applied the penalty that their own VOICE OF CONSCIENCE had indicated. This is: they cut Jubelas's throat, they tore out Jubelos's heart, and they divided Jubelum's body throwing each part to the indicated point.

## THE SEARCH FOR HIRAM'S BODY

Solomon sent immediately, again the Twelve Companions in search of the body of Hiram; but five days later they returned without having found anything.

Solomon then sent NINE MASTERS, who ascended Mount Lebanon; on the second day of their ascent, one of them, excessively tired, upon going to rest, verified that a place of earth seemed recently disturbed. He then measured in length, width and depth, arriving at the conclusion that it was Hiram's tomb; he then called his colleagues and effectively, digging, they found the Master's cadaver.

Respectfully they covered it again and marked the place with an ACACIA branch, returning to Jerusalem to communicate the fact to Solomon, who ordered that they bring the hierophant's cadaver.

## THE RESURRECTION CEREMONY

The Nine Masters, dressed in their aprons and wearing their white gloves, returned to the place where Hiram rested, found and removed the ACACIA sprig and excavated again.

Upon the appearance of Hiram's cadaver, they raised (as the President of the Lodge does in the Ceremonial) their hands above their heads and let them fall with great sorrow, on their thighs, striking their feet on the ground and exclaiming, "Woe, Lord, my God!"

One of the Masters then tried to raise the cadaver by the index finger of the right hand (which is done to the one who is in the coffin) saying the words BOOZ (BOHAZ) and taking a step backward upon releasing the finger.

Another of the Masters (and thus does the 1st Vigilant in the Ceremony) then grasps the middle finger of the same hand saying JAKIN; and, upon seeking uselessly to raise the cadaver, says MAC BENAK (the flesh separates from the bones).

Finally, the eldest of the Masters (and the Most Respectable in the Ceremonial, does the same with the candidate) says:

"Venerable Masters, do you not know, perhaps, that, without me, you can do nothing? Unite your efforts to mine and thus we will achieve the purpose we pursue."

He then grasps in claw form the right pulse of Hiram (of the candidate in the ceremonial) and two Masters help to raise him. The Elder puts his right foot against that of the cadaver, unites knee with knee, chest with chest and passes his left arm over the left shoulder. Embracing him in this way tightly, he pronounces the secret word of the master's degree.

And it is thus that the Nine Masters bring, in this form, the Hierophant "emerged from the tomb," just as the candidate is conducted to the Altar, before which he ratifies the oath of Master Mason, that is, of COMPLETE MASON, being confided to him on that occasion the secret characteristics of the Degree, that permit Masons of the Third Degree to recognize each other and which, of course, I cannot reproduce in this article.

## THE SYMBOLIC INTERPRETATION

We have to make, now, the study of the Symbolism of the Temple of the Ceremonial and of the Legend of the Third Masonic Degree, whose exposition we began in the previous number of LA INICIACIÓN and we finish in the preceding lines. It is a very complex matter that I will try to summarize in a series of synthetic concepts:

### 1º - THE UNIVERSAL DEATH MYSTERY

Just as the Candidate for Initiation to the 1st Degree found himself, in the CHAMBER OF REFLECTIONS, before death as fundamental mystery—but it was PERSONAL DEATH,—so also the Temple of the Master mason represents the mystery of death but expanded to the synthetic concept, THE INDIVIDUAL DIES, THE UNIVERSE ALSO DIES. All forms are transformed, are RENEWED, in a succession of manifestations alternated with periods of non-formal manifestation.

### 2º - THE ETERNAL TERNARY CONSERVATION

In said funeral Temple, the Altars of WISDOM, FORCE and BEAUTY, are, however, dimly illuminated by THREE lamps; IN EACH WORLD (PRINCIPLES-LAWS-EFFECTS) there is always preserved at least the POTENTIAL STATE (TERNARY), which, in the last two, is nothing but a reflection of the first.

### 3º - THE ETERNAL LIGHT ABOVE MORTALITY

Above the coffin of the "dead Man" (Man without light, without consciousness of his LUMINOUS or SPIRITUAL LIFE) shines, however, the UNIQUE LIGHT of an ANCIENT LAMP (the PRIMITIVE origin, the ETERNAL LIGHT, the DIVINE SOURCE). So also always shines, above our perishable Personality, the Light of the Spiritual Individuality that illuminates us, if we seek properly contact with that ancient LIGHT, that REMAINS in and between each rebirth and each "death."

### 4º - THE SATURNIAN SYMBOLISM

All the Venerable Masters present in the Middle Chamber are dressed in black attire, simultaneous symbol of the dense physical body (color of Saturn, planet of austerity and of Eternal Wisdom) and of the Ceremony. All have put on the hat to show their quality as Free Men, since in the old European countries, in which the current Rite was installed, only Free Lords (Nobles, Freiherr, Seigneur, Franc-masons, Free-masons, etc.) had the right to remain covered in certain ceremonies. Moreover, the Bible says that "man must pray with his head covered" and the Hebraic rite, as well as the Christian rites, also make the priests cover themselves during liturgical offices.

## 10th RULE - TABLE OF HOUSES CONSULTATION

This Rule sends us to look in the TABLES OF HOUSES, for the page that contains simultaneously the LATITUDE OF BIRTH and the SIDEREAL TIME OF BIRTH.

Noting that, in the Book of Houses, the pages carry in the upper part, the indication of NORTH latitudes, we keep turning pages, until we find those that bring latitude of 35 degrees, which is that of this birth, as we saw when applying the 3rd Rule (See No. 5 of LA INICIACIÓN).

When we find it, we will see immediately that, for each latitude, the data go in columns that follow THE INCREASING SIDEREAL ORDER, that is, from 0 hour, 0 minute, 0 second, until 23 hours, 56 minutes, 20 seconds. Since our Sidereal Time is 23 hours, 59 minutes and 13 seconds, the MOST APPROXIMATE SIDEREAL TIME is that of 24 hours, that is, 0 hour, 0 minute, 0 second and it is the one we will use, as we will see in the TABLES OF HOUSES that we reproduce partially.

## TABLES OF HOUSES ANALYSIS

We have reproduced almost half the page, so that readers can realize several things, among which we point out the following:

1º) – The SIDEREAL TIME is indicated, more or less, every FOUR minutes.

2º) – For THE SAME SIDEREAL TIME, the cusp of the 10th House has the same degree and sign, whatever the latitude may be.

In this page we find the MOST APPROXIMATE SIDEREAL TIME, that of 0 hour, 00 minute, 00 second, which is marked in the facsimile above and opposite to which, IN THE SIX SUB-COLUMNS of LATITUDE 35º, we find the SIGNS that must be put on the cusps of the Houses of our horoscope.

But, before doing so, and according to Rule 10, we must observe the following:

For the Ascendant the Table indicates CANCER, with 15 degrees and 34 minutes; we will place this sign, therefore, on THE CUSP OF THE SEVENTH HOUSE. And so for the others.

Proceeding in this way, we will successively fill the cusps of houses; 4, 5, 6, SEVENTH, 8 and 9 instead of the 10, 11, 12 ASCENDANT (or first), 2 and 3 that the Tables indicate. But, afterward, and according to the

### The HALASANA (Plow Posture) with Advanced Benefits and Spinal Consciousness

The fourth Asana has been given the name of HALASANA69 or "plow posture" because it has all the characteristics of a plow, as readers will be able to verify in Fig. 7.

Indeed, HALA, in Sanskrit, means "plow."

## TECHNIQUE

Lie down on the ground, on the accustomed mat, in dorsal position, with arms extended and with the palms of the hands resting on the ground.

Raise, afterward, very slowly and without effort the legs together to the maximum possible.

Supporting yourself on the palms of the hands, always being with the arms extended, lift the trunk until the chin, resting against the chest, prevents the trunk from greater elevation.

At the beginning, due to the scarce elasticity of the vertebral joints and due to the little amplitude of movements, owing in part to the accumulation of subcutaneous adipose tissue, one will not be able to manage to raise the trunk sufficiently and make the feet reach above the head, as is indicated in Fig. 7; but, gradually, with exercise, one will be able to manage to perform the HALASANA perfectly and without any effort.

Being in the described position, begin to breathe very slowly, inspiring during the time in which, mentally, one counts to 7, retaining the breath also during the time in which one counts to 7 AND exhaling, finally, during the same lapse of time.

These respirations must be repeated three times, always without effort and slowly.

Finish the exercise, returning to the initial position, that is, the dorsal position, performing the inverse movements with the same slowness with which the Asana had been performed.

## VARIANTS

There exist two variants of the HALASANA.

### 1º - The First Variant

The first variant is performed in the following manner:

After having performed the Asana until obtaining the position drawn in Fig. 7, raise the arms extended until being able to reach to touch with the fingers of the hands the big toes of the feet and even grasp them.

It is very difficult, at the beginning, to perform this variant, but, with practice, after a short time one will manage to obtain this position with great facility.

### 2º - The Second Variant: UTTANA-PADASANA70

The second variant is called UTTANA-PADASANA70, UTTANA means "high" and PADA means "foot." For this reason this variant of the HALASANA, is also called "high posture of the feet."

It is performed in the following manner:

After having placed oneself in dorsal position, raise slowly the legs together and extended (without raising the back) to the maximum position, at the same time that one inspires slowly (counting mentally to 7). Remain in this position retaining the breath during all the time in which one counts, mentally, to 7, and return to the initial position lowering slowly the legs always extended, at the same time that one exhales slowly counting to 7.

This variant can be repeated three times.

## RESULTS OF THE HALASANA

The beneficial effects of the HALASANA can be summarized thus:

### 1º - Articular and Muscular Enhancement

Increase of elasticity in the vertebral and coxo-femoral articulations.

Increase of the contractility of the muscles of the spinal column, of the abdominal wall and of the arms and legs.

### 3º - Nervous System Tonification

Tonification of the great sympathetic and of the spinal nerves.

Greater flow of blood in the arteries of the spinal column and, in general, in all the arteries that carry blood to the muscles and articulations put in movement, thus realizing, like all natural laws, the aphorism of the Salernitan medical school "ubo irritatio ibi affluxux" [where there is irritation, there is afflux]. Consequently greater nutrition of the tissues is obtained and increase of cellular vitality (Jiva) by the Prana or Vital Force that more abundantly is carried by the blood to the cells.

Due to the greater oxidation and to the greater elimination of toxic substances proceeding from cellular catabolism, constipation and hepatic congestion gradually disappear.

### 9º - Stone Dissolution

Through the increased drainage and through the return to normality of the functions of "material exchange," the stones of the gall bladder and those of the renal pelvis disappear.

### 10º - Spinal Column Supreme Importance

The spinal column in its bony part (vertebrae), is the support of the entire trunk and, due to the most important organs that it contains (marrow) or are found near (spinal nerves, cords of the great sympathetic, with its ramifications, etc.) it is of exceptional importance in the organization of the human body, for this reason the yogis have always given it their greatest care.

In classical esoteric literature it is called, in Sanskrit, MERU-DANDA71.

## THE SACRED MOUNTAIN SYMBOLISM

MERU is the name that is given to an imaginary sacred mountain that is supposed to exist within the Earth, and of which the middle part would be in correspondence with the center of the Earth and the summit would reach to heaven.

DANDA, means staff, scepter, rod.

The MERU-DANDA is, then, the symbol adopted in yoguistic literature to signify the axis of the Earth and, analogically, in man, the spinal column, which is the axis that sustains everything and whose extremities are the two poles (head and sacrum) of that small world or "microcosm" that is man.

## COMPLETE ORGANISM INTEGRATION

The HALASANA permits, with other Asanas, to strengthen, in one word all the organs of the spinal column mentioned and, consequently, assures to the entire organism (through the functions of these organs) the most complete health and retards premature aging.

The pranic circulation intensifies in its two currents (Ida and Pingala) and accumulates more easily in the ganglia and in the plexuses (Tchakrams) of the great sympathetic.

## On the Quaternary

### Mathematical Metaphysics and Mystical Geometry

After Pythagoras, who revealed the mystery of the quaternary as symbol of the deity, all the great martinists have occupied themselves with this number, have adopted it in the signatures of the third degree by means of a figure that encloses at the same time the syntheses of the teachings of the three degrees and the key to the symbol of the Cross. These mystics have generally expounded their ideas in condensed and sometimes veiled form, so that many interesting considerations are by them only implicitly suggested.

We propose, then, in this modest article, to highlight and in systematic form some of these ideas, as well as certain profound aspects that they enclose. Let us begin by summarizing some of the principal ideas of these martinists, completing them with some new considerations.

## CABALISTIC GENERATION OF THE QUATERNARY (L. C. de Saint Martin)

The first Creative principle is symbolized by unity, 1; Unity opposes itself to itself to unfold into 2 principles, Active (Father) and Passive (Mother), or symbolically 1/1 = 2; the mutual action of these two principles, their reciprocal opposition, produces the third term (Son), 1 + 2 = 3, all this forms a new Unity, which is the totality of everything created (Family) and is symbolized by 4. The 4 symbolizes, therefore, the totality of Creation, the return to Unity, the Unity of another plane or "octave."

Every force is symbolized by 1; every force has an effect symbolized by 2; the consequence of the effect is symbolized by 3, and the realization of this consequence is 4. From this last number is born by reduction and theosophic addition the number 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 = Universe.

**Mystically** signifies the first octave of Unity, source of new Creation, revealer of the Divine Plan. **Esoterically** synthesizes the symbolism of the Cross. **Sephirotically** indicates Goodness, Harmony, Conciliation, Realization, Perfection. **Metaphysically** signifies Form, aesthetics in which this number is found very frequently. **Astrologically** signifies the four cardinal points, the four phases of the movements of the stars. **In Alchemy** symbolizes the four elements (fire, air, water, earth). **In Aesthetics** signifies Music, in general, harmonic vibration. **In Logic** indicates the law of correspondence, the concepts of exterior and interior of Boole. **Geometrically** signifies the quadrilateral and more profoundly the genetics of projective or topology. **Physically** symbolizes the totality of Space (3 dimensions) and Time (1 dimension) 3 + 1 = 4. The quaternary is intimately linked to the ternary, without which it cannot exist and with which it forms 7 = 3 + 4, symbol of the circulation of Divine Forces in Nature.

## EXAMPLES OF QUATERNARY IMPORTANCE

Examples. – One of the most important factors of Aesthetics is proportion and it consists of 4 terms, forming quaternary. The importance of the division in mean and extreme reason is well known (Leonardo da Vinci has written an entire treatise on the subject), and this division is based on the quaternary. The division in mean and extreme reason is a particular case of the harmonic group of 4 points, which is the basis of all Geometry and Music. The importance of number 4 in Music is well known; one can say that it is its very essence. Let us remember that the basis of all harmony are four voices; that the quartet is the basis of Chamber Music; that the perfect chord is a ternary with the repetition of Unity; that the fourth note of the scale has a singular importance, that the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 give the relations of the octave, fourth, fifth, etc... Pythagoras, upon discovering the relation existing between the harmonic group of geometry and the perfect musical chord, laid the foundations of a new science, musical mathematics. In mathematics it is difficult to find a part where the quaternary does not intervene, as will be seen by the more concrete examples that we will give at the end.

From all that has been said it follows that the most salient characteristics of the quaternary are Goodness, Harmony and Conciliation of opposites. This question naturally presents itself: to what are due these characteristics of harmony and goodness?, what are their cabalistic and mathematical causes? Let us see how, applying the principles expounded by the great martinist Barlet, the solution to this problem is immediately found. We will try to give the cabalistic and geometric explanation of the posed question. In a forthcoming article, we will also see its relation with the metaphysical-mystical theory of Wronski.

The Absolute is no more conceivable to us than by its two poles, we know nothing more of it. What we ordinarily call a being is the combination of these two poles: zero (0) or infinite (∞). It is known that 0.∞ = 1. Any number, a reality is equal to zero. Extending this notion to the extreme limits, we will call THE BEING par excellence the maximum of this individual and NON-BEING its minimum, that is, the two values of the real quantity that reach contact with the poles of the Absolute.

In this admirable description, immediately the answer to our question. We see, in effect, how the attribute of the Absolute, which is Love, leads the All-Power to dilute itself in Space in favor of it; and from this are born the two alternating periods of Evolution and Involution. But each of these periods has two poles (point and space) and from there is born the quaternary: two states of the Absolute Being, and each of these states is double. Hence the symbol of the cross; each line represents a period and each period has two extremes (poles) forming the square of the cross. The two periods pass one to the other by means of love, which is the point of intersection of the two lines. The 4 is, then, symbol of the totality of involution-evolution, as well as of the conciliation of opposites, of harmony between spirit and matter.

Geometry is the abstract science of Form and the symbol of Form must be 4, as follows from the following metaphysical considerations. Every Creation of an individual, of an individual entity is given by the ternary; but for this to be able to enter in contact with the exterior, for this to be able to be perceived by other entities, it needs a Form, with which the creation will be completed and full harmony will be obtained. Thus, then, Form completes the ternary up to the quaternary; it is the link between the abstract and the concrete, it is the concretization of the ternary, its harmonization with the exterior. It thus becomes clear why 4 symbolizes Form, and we again find the explanation of its attributes. Form is the symbol of the created, the concrete in the abstract, the abstract of the concrete, so that 4 results in being really the symbol of the symbol. This also explains to us the why of the importance of symbolism in occult and profane science.

Then, since 4 symbolizes Form and since geometry is the science of Form, it is to be expected that 4 play an exceptional role in geometry and effectively it is so. We see how all projective geometry (mother of all geometries, according to an expression of the famous geometer Cayley) originates in the connection of the ternary with the quaternary and how it gives us a mathematical illustration of the mystical laws of the quaternary.

To realize the generation of the projective scale (the mystical manifestation) one departs from a fundamental terna ∞, 0, 1 (the ternary of creation) the two poles of the Absolute, 0 and ∞ and their resultant, product 1 = 0.∞; to be able to give origin to a new terna (to give origin to a new manifestation); this fundamental terna (superior creation) needs the fourth harmonic conjugate which is 2 (the mystical 4, Form), with which already forms the harmonic quatern (the mystical quaternary, the family); thus obtaining the new Unity, source of a new harmonic group (source of a new creation), thanks to the fact that 2 passes to occupy the place of 1, to form the new terna ∞, 0, 2, new more concrete family to be able thus to continue the generation of new harmonic quaterns (families) in both opposite senses to infinity. The harmonic 4 served, then, as transition bridge between the primitive fundamental terna and the new concrete entities; it served as concretization of the fundamental terna (it is its Form), it is the new unity, the impulse to the doubly infinite movement of the generation of concrete entities. This process is repeated indefinitely and always in resemblance to its creating quatern (Principle of Analogy).
