## The Venerable Personality of Master AMO (Continuation)
### The Humble Christian Mystic and His Extraordinary Powers
**By Jehel S.I.**
[translate:"My Spiritual Master"]: that is the expression with which PAPUS, Doctor, Magus, Initiate and Initiator, the "Balzac of Occultism," the "Master of clarity," designates with INFINITE HUMILITY, Master AMO.
Who was that Master, before whom values like PAPUS, STANISLAS DE GUAITA, BARLET, DURVILLE, PHANEG and so many others bowed reverently?
He was a modest, silent man, a TRUE CHRISTIAN MYSTIC who, thinking of SERVING others, did so with marvelous powers brought from the cradle and which he cultivated daily, PUTTING THEM AT THE SERVICE OF THE NEEDY, whoever they might be; for in his luminous life he attended, not only the powerful like the tsar of all the Russias, but humble people whose gratitude still today lives over his name like a luminous aureole.
## THE HUMBLE ORIGINS
His civil name was Philippe Nizier, or simply PHILIPPE, as he liked to be called.
Born in a modest home, in Lyon (France) he had to struggle to study; for to be able to use legally the DIVINE GIFTS that he brought, it was necessary to be a doctor. To be able to study, he worked. Every morning he went around the homes of a butcher's clients and delivered the meat.
I have known many "spiritualists" who when they passed fifty meters from a butchery already felt "their aura disturbed and that could bother them in their spiritual works." For AMO, working thus did not prevent him from being a Master, a Doctor and a Saint.
## THE MEDICAL SCHOOL MIRACLES
When he was taking first year of medicine (relates Papus) he one day resurrected a person who, according to the unanimous affirmations of the doctors, had died shortly before. That was enough for them to take a dislike to him that grew to the point of preventing him from graduating in France, due to the "fraternal" opposition of some graduates.
Another time, visiting the ward of the Hospital, AMO looked at the sick and they improved so rapidly that everyone was amazed. On one occasion the doctors were discussing about the form of rheumatism that was causing the headaches and earaches of a patient. AMO, present in the discussion, said that the patient had a tumor of the internal ear (with abscess of the mastoid), which provoked the laughter of those present; but AT THAT MOMENT the patient's ear began to discharge pus and shortly after was cured, confirming AMO's diagnosis.
## THE THEURGICAL SCHOOL OF LYON
## THE THEURGICAL SCHOOL OF LYON
AMO became the Chief of the school of Theurgy of Lyon; but with his cures he had many difficulties with the doctors and the authorities, being prosecuted many times for the illegal practice of medicine. He thought without doubt that his duty was to continue, because he never stopped doing good, even so.
His small office on the street of [translate:"Tête d'Or"] in Lyon, was always full of people who came to seek counsel, help and cure for themselves or for their relatives. In that small office extraordinary things happened, of which I am going to refer these to you:
## THE AKASHIC RECORDS REVELATION
When PAPUS, for example, analyzing the life of certain persons, believed he saw some injustice of destiny and, sincere researcher, came to expose his preoccupation to the Spiritual Master, the latter said to him simply: "Come, I am going to ask the FRIEND to show you the Truth."
And in AMO's little reserved room, rapidly, AMO's invocation permitted the parade of the clichés of the ASTRAL LIGHT, in which PAPUS saw developing the preceding life or lives of that individual and the ANTERIOR CAUSES of his PRESENT DESTINY became clear and logical like everything NATURAL.
And Papus, sincere as always, relates that, at the end of each of those experiences, he bowed more devotionally before the Wisdom of the Universe and before the Knowledge and Power of his Master.
## THE INSTANT HEALING OF THE FAITHFUL
Many times, if a woman of the people, finding the Master on the street, came to supplicate him for the salvation of her dying son and AMO said to her "Go, woman, you are richer by your courage and by your constant service than the rich of the earth; go, your child is cured," upon returning to her house, the poor and good woman verified the "miracle" that disconcerted and irritated the doctors.
J. Bricaud, ex Grand Master of the Martinist Branch of Lyon, relates that he knew many persons cured by AMO; that certain cures seemed truly miracles and that a worker whose gangrenous leg they wanted to cut off, healed in less than an hour through the Master's work.
## THE TEACHING OF PERFECT HUMILITY
AMO lived very retired, surrounded by a circle of friends and disciples. When he was questioned about who he was and from where his strange or terrible powers came, he answered:
[translate:"I AM LESS THAN A STONE, THERE ARE SO MANY BEINGS ON THIS EARTH WHO HAVE THE CERTAINTY OF BEING SOMETHING, THAT I AM HAPPY TO BE BARELY NOTHING."]
And he taught to obtain the certainty that, he who knows that he knows nothing, is only beginning to understand science..., that he who only possesses a mattress and lends it to one who doesn't have it, is richer than all the rich of the earth.
## THE THREE TYPES OF DISEASES
AMO taught that there are three species of diseases: the physical, the astral and the spiritual.
**The physical** are of the domain of allopathic medicine.
## THE THREE TYPES OF DISEASES
AMO taught that there are three species of diseases: the physical, the astral and the spiritual.
**The physical** are of the domain of allopathic medicine.
**The astral** should be treated by homeopathy, magnetism and the processes of the ancient occultists.
**The spiritual diseases** could only be treated by prayer and by theurgy.
## THE MIRACULOUS CHILD HEALING
A typical example of the powers and teachings of Master AMO can be seen in the following cure:
In AMO's house there were some twenty or thirty people, among them PAPUS and two other doctors. A lady who, when a girl had already been saved from grave illness by the Master, brings her little child, two or three years old, in a comatose state, and asks the Master for pity and health for the little one.
AMO asks that the doctors examine the child. The diagnosis is unanimous: tuberculous meningitis, of rapid evolution. Death should come inexorably in a few hours.
[translate:"Well then, said AMO, this child can be SAVED. Do you all wish to commit yourselves to remain TWO MONTHS without speaking of the absent ones?"]
None of those present acceded, and Papus—a Master also or almost, in that epoch—said that it seemed difficult to him to remain more than two hours without speaking ill of his neighbor.
AMO smiled probably satisfied with the SINCERITY of all and said: [translate:"Very well, you will try to remain two hours without speaking or thinking ill of anyone."]
He took the child to the little reserved room and, at two hours, brought him back walking, with his little hand in the Master's hand. He was totally and integrally cured, as the doctors present verified.
## THE CONTINUING POWER OF MASTER AMO
I CAN ASSURE YOU that, until today, nothing has changed in the manner of working of Master AMO. I have been able to verify that never has a disciple or a well-intentioned person asked him for a cure or an improvement without it being effected rapidly, in THE EXACT PROPORTION OF THE STRENGTH AND SINCERITY OF THE REQUEST and of the effort made by the one who asked to GIVE SOMETHING, for the cure of others, disinterestedly.
And if some, well-intentioned, would become accustomed to maintaining a serene attitude, never getting angry, not speaking harshly of anyone and thinking principally in HOW THEY CAN SERVE OTHERS, they would remain astonished at the protection that Master AMO would give to their altruistic desires and HOW EASY IT IS TO HAVE POWERS when one has REALLY the intense and exclusive desire to do good with them, without vanity or desire for personal progress.
The difficult thing about the matter is that we can deceive our fellow beings, we can even come to deceive ourselves, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to deceive the Master. For that reason, he who sees himself as he really is, never is surprised at having received little; on the contrary, he always has the impression of HAVING RECEIVED MORE THAN HE DESERVED.
## THE IMPERIAL MARTINIST LODGE
For that reason, he who sees himself as he really is, never is surprised at having received little; on the contrary, he always has the impression of HAVING RECEIVED MORE THAN HE DESERVED.
## THE IMPERIAL MARTINIST LODGE
It was Master AMO who founded the Martinist Lodge that functioned in the Imperial Court of Russia in circumstances that I will tell you on another opportunity. It was he who predicted the future of the well-known writer H. Durville (also Martinist later) when, after the latter formed his home, upon the birth of his first child, Philippe accepted to be the godfather and moved to Paris to attend the ceremony (let us note in passing that, therefore, he was not FANATIC NOR INTOLERANT IN RELIGIOUS MATTERS).
## THE PROPHETIC PENETRATION
Upon personally meeting H. Durville, AMO said to him: "Currently you don't believe in anything, but later you will believe." Indeed Durville, who followed the school of mesmerian-fluidic magnetism, without accepting at that time, the superior and mystical part of the Traditional Teachings, was later a complete Initiate.
The baptism ceremony was performed in the Church of Sainte Marie in Paris, and upon arriving there with Durville, Papus and others, AMO, approached a beggar who was at the door of the church and said to him: "It is dangerous that they steal the eight thousand five hundred francs in gold that you have in the mattress and so much more in such a place."
The beggar left astonished and frightened that a stranger should reveal to him thus the reality of his false poverty.
## CEDAÏOR'S INTRODUCTION TO AMO
Facts like this and others more instructive are very numerous in the life of the Master; I will tell you some more in the next number. For now, I will finish relating how CEDAÏOR met AMO.
Being still almost a child (twelve to thirteen years), Cedaïor, to go from Valencia to Paris, had to pass through Lyon and remain there some days. A friend of his family took him to the presence of AMO who, having looked at the child, asked him if he would like to help a very sick lady.
The child Cedaïor, of very good heart, said yes; then AMO put his hand on his head and gave instructions to the gentleman who accompanied him so that Cedaïor should be taken daily to a clinic and there leave his hand one hour on the chest of a lady, which the good child did with all pleasure and constancy for some days, at the end of which THE CANCER of the breast from which the lady suffered had disappeared.
Thus was how our brother Cedaïor met AMO and made his first service of healing through good will, compassion and constancy in Serving.
## THE TWO ESSENTIAL VIRTUES
AMO taught that there were two unique virtues indispensable to progress: GOODNESS and TOLERANCE.
Let us meditate on these words of the Master, who was so calumniated that his disciples united more closely than ever in his defense. It was from Him that Papus learned what he expresses in the following words:

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF MASTER AMO'S EXAMPLE FOR WARTIME SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP
This extraordinary continuation of Maître Philippe's biography appears in July 1942 when humanity desperately needs understanding of how authentic spiritual authority operates through humility and service rather than domination and self-aggrandizement. The systematic presentation provides the exact model needed to prevent the kind of authoritarian disasters that have devastated the twentieth century.
**The Infinite Humility Recognition**: The description of how PAPUS, despite being "Doctor, Magus, Initiate and Initiator," designates AMO as "My Spiritual Master" with "INFINITE HUMILITY" demonstrates that authentic greatness recognizes greater authenticity rather than competing with it. During wartime, when false leaders maintain power through suppressing rivals, understanding how genuine authority enhances rather than diminishes others becomes essential.
**The Service Orientation**: AMO's dedication to "SERVING others...PUTTING THEM AT THE SERVICE OF THE NEEDY, whoever they might be" provides the fundamental principle for authentic leadership during any crisis period. The inclusiveness—serving "not only the powerful like the tsar of all the Russias, but humble people"—demonstrates that genuine spiritual authority transcends class and political divisions.
**The Practical Humility**: The account of Philippe working as a butcher's delivery boy to fund his medical education while maintaining spiritual development demonstrates that authentic spirituality enhances rather than avoids practical responsibility. The contrast with "spiritualists" who felt their "aura disturbed" by passing near a butchery reveals how false spirituality creates artificial separation between sacred and ordinary activities.
**The Medical School Persecution**: The dramatic account of Philippe resurrecting a person during his first year of medicine, leading to "fraternal opposition" that prevented his graduation, provides understanding of how institutional authorities often oppose rather than support genuine competence that transcends their limitations. During wartime, when authentic leaders face persecution from established but corrupted institutions, this example provides inspiration for continuing service despite official opposition.
During wartime, when authentic leaders face persecution from established but corrupted institutions, this example provides inspiration for continuing service despite official opposition.
**The Diagnostic Superiority**: The hospital incident where AMO correctly diagnosed a mastoid abscess while trained doctors were wrong, followed by immediate confirmation through spontaneous discharge of pus, demonstrates how authentic spiritual perception enhances rather than replaces technical knowledge. During periods when conventional expertise proves inadequate for unprecedented challenges, integrating spiritual insight with technical competence becomes essential.
**The Legal Persecution Response**: AMO's continued practice despite being "prosecuted many times for the illegal practice of medicine" because "he thought without doubt that his duty was to continue" provides guidance for maintaining authentic service when official permission is denied or withdrawn. During wartime, when legal systems may become corrupted or inadequate, understanding the higher law of service becomes crucial for authentic leaders.
**The Akashic Records Demonstration**: The extraordinary account of AMO showing PAPUS "the parade of the clichés of the ASTRAL LIGHT" revealing "the preceding life or lives" and "ANTERIOR CAUSES" of present circumstances demonstrates how authentic spiritual authority operates through access to information beyond ordinary perception. This capability enables understanding the deeper karmic patterns underlying apparent injustices, providing hope that ultimate justice operates through spiritual laws even when human institutions fail.
**The Instant Street Healings**: The accounts of AMO healing dying children through brief encounters with their mothers on the street, verified as "miracles" by medical professionals, demonstrate how authentic spiritual power operates through love and faith rather than complex techniques or lengthy treatments. During wartime, when conventional medical resources may be inadequate or unavailable, understanding how healing operates through spiritual rather than merely material mechanisms becomes essential.
**The Perfect Humility Teaching**: AMO's response when questioned about his powers—"I AM LESS THAN A STONE...I AM HAPPY TO BE BARELY NOTHING"—provides the psychological foundation for wielding extraordinary power without corruption. The teaching that true wealth consists in sharing one's only possession with someone who has none demonstrates the economic principles that prevent spiritual authority from becoming material exploitation.
The teaching that true wealth consists in sharing one's only possession with someone who has none demonstrates the economic principles that prevent spiritual authority from becoming material exploitation.
**The Three Disease Classification**: The systematic teaching about physical, astral, and spiritual diseases with their appropriate treatments provides complete healthcare methodology that integrates rather than conflicts with conventional medicine. During wartime, when complex trauma affects multiple levels simultaneously, understanding how different therapeutic approaches serve different aspects of healing becomes crucial for effective recovery.
**The Collective Purification Requirement**: The miraculous healing of the child with tuberculous meningitis through requiring collective commitment to "remain TWO MONTHS without speaking of the absent ones" demonstrates how individual healing often requires community purification. The reduction to "two hours without speaking or thinking ill of anyone" when the longer commitment proved impossible shows how spiritual work adapts to actual rather than ideal conditions while maintaining essential principles.
**The Proportional Response Principle**: The teaching that healing occurs "in THE EXACT PROPORTION OF THE STRENGTH AND SINCERITY OF THE REQUEST and of the effort made by the one who asked to GIVE SOMETHING, for the cure of others, disinterestedly" provides precise understanding of how spiritual assistance operates through reciprocity rather than arbitrary grace. This prevents both presumption and despair by establishing clear relationship between inner development and outer blessing.
**The Impossible Deception**: The recognition that "we can deceive our fellow beings, we can even come to deceive ourselves, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to deceive the Master" provides understanding that authentic spiritual authority operates through direct perception rather than social manipulation or self-delusion. This prevents the kind of spiritual corruption that occurs when external recognition becomes more important than inner reality.
**The Religious Tolerance**: The notation that AMO served as godfather in a Catholic ceremony despite his own spiritual development demonstrates how authentic spirituality transcends sectarian boundaries while respecting traditional forms. During wartime, when religious divisions often become militarized, understanding how genuine spiritual development enhances rather than opposes religious observance becomes essential for maintaining social cohesion.
**The Prophetic Penetration**: AMO's prediction that Durville would eventually believe despite current skepticism demonstrates how authentic spiritual vision perceives potentials rather than merely current conditions. The beggar incident—revealing hidden wealth through direct perception—provides concrete evidence of capabilities that transcend ordinary human limitations.
The beggar incident—revealing hidden wealth through direct perception—provides concrete evidence of capabilities that transcend ordinary human limitations.
**The Childhood Training**: The account of twelve-year-old Cedaïor being trained to heal cancer through simply placing his hand on the patient demonstrates how spiritual power operates through innocence and good will rather than complex technical knowledge. This provides hope that ordinary people can serve extraordinary purposes when properly guided and motivated by genuine compassion.
**The Essential Virtues**: The identification of GOODNESS and TOLERANCE as the "two unique virtues indispensable to progress" provides complete ethical foundation for spiritual development that transcends cultural and religious divisions. During wartime, when hatred and intolerance dominate public discourse, these simple principles provide practical tools for maintaining spiritual development despite adverse circumstances.
### THE WARTIME RELEVANCE
This account provides essential guidance for:
**Authentic Leadership Recognition**: Understanding how genuine authority operates through service rather than dominance, enabling identification of true leaders during crisis periods when false authorities proliferate
**Institutional Reform**: Recognizing how authentic competence often conflicts with established but inadequate institutions, providing guidance for supporting genuine rather than merely official expertise
**Community Healing**: Understanding how individual spiritual development serves collective recovery through the principle that personal purification contributes to communal wellbeing
**Crisis Navigation**: Applying spiritual principles to practical challenges through integration of transcendent vision with material competence rather than choosing between spiritual and practical approaches
**Persecution Response**: Maintaining authentic service despite official opposition or social persecution through recognition of higher duty that transcends human approval or disapproval
This extraordinary biography demonstrates how authentic spiritual authority provides practical tools for conscious leadership during humanity's most challenging periods—exactly the kind of understanding needed for preventing rather than merely responding to civilizational catastrophes through individual transformation serving collective evolutionary advancement.

### The Apprentice Mason Degree: Sacred Tools and Temple Symbolism
**Teaching of Jehel**
And it is within the Temple described previously that the new Apprentice is going to "work." Let us see under what conditions. We have said in preceding articles that they had made him take an oath. To do so they made him kneel—so that he would understand that before the Universal or Divine Forces, we must all be humble, which we little are really—and they put a compass over his heart, saying to him: "learn to regulate the beats of your heart," which can be understood in three ways:
## THE THREE LEVELS OF HEART REGULATION
### 1st: The Yogic Science Level
Science "yoga" of respiration and control of the respiratory and cardiac rhythm, which are united and without whose management there are no possibilities of CONSCIOUS psychism.
### 2nd: The Moral Plane Level
Feel and understand the impulses of your heart, free yourself from the passions and be a "man of well-formed heart."
### 3rd: The Spiritual Plane Level
The entire universe pulses like a human heart; to know how to measure and apply that universal diastole and systole, is to have made oneself master of the Great Magical Agent from all points of view, and to have understood that LOVE is the Universal Law that works under the names of Attraction and Repulsion, Flow and Reflux, Involution and Evolution, Incarnation and Disincarnation, etc...
## THE SACRED OATH AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
In such position the oath taken by the Apprentice is to be faithful in his work and silent about initiatic secrets; and the sign of Apprentice made with the right hand open in square over the throat recalls that oath and explains that the Apprentice has taken the commitment to speak with rectitude and to be silent with prudence.
It also recalls that the laryngeal plexus is one of those that must be developed to be able to be a real and conscious servant of the Higher Planes. It symbolizes, in this aspect, the Human Verb, conceived as Creative Verb, reflection of the Divine Verb.
## THE SACRED APRON AND ITS PROFOUND SYMBOLISM
Having finished such oath they give to the Apprentice, besides the gloves of which we have already spoken, an "apron" or leather apron of white whose form is that of a rectangle over which there is a triangle.
It is one of the most profound symbols and least known by the masons, who give the explanation, morally only, that "apprentices, less experienced than companions and masters, need more protection and for that reason wear the apron with the flap (triangular part) raised."
Such explanation is, without doubt, a beautiful symbol of the greater protection that, really, the ignorant, the beginner, the less evolved needs, must have, has the RIGHT to receive. But the symbol of the apron goes much further, since its form, as I said before, is that of a quadrilateral over which there is a triangle.
But the symbol of the apron goes much further, since its form, as I said before, is that of a quadrilateral over which there is a triangle.
It suffices to think a little to see that it is the summary of all Masonic doctrine: the triangle of the Spirit, of Wisdom, Strength and Beauty, OVER the QUADRILATERAL of MATTER, of the World of Forms, and, in other words, the very constitution of the Human Being with its FOUR inferior principles: Physical Body, Vitality, Vital Body and Passional or Animal Soul or concrete mind and its THREE superior principles: Human Soul or abstract mind, Angelic or Spiritual Soul and Superior or Divine Spirit.
Such apron represents, then, very well, the human being in the involutive state preceding "sin," when the superior principles were still "outside and above" the inferior ones; the reception of knowledge was made by the intuitive, direct and unconscious route. It is the image of the Lemurian race, to a certain point.
## THE SACRED WORD AND ITS EGYPTIAN CONNECTION
They also give the apprentice a "Sacred Word," and it is curious to note that it is the only Masonic degree that has a single word; the sacred one. This suffices for "those who know" to show the connection with the Egyptian mysteries, in which the aspirant or Apprentice not having permission to LEAVE THE TEMPLE, knew only the Sacred Word to put himself in communication with the other Initiates within the Temple; but did not know the Word of passage that permitted him to leave and return to it.
Such sacred word varies according to the Rites, but is always that of the name of the column on which, according to the Rite, the Apprentice sits. It is, then, in the majority of the Rites, the word B.O.A.Z., given in response to the touch of the Apprentice.
Such word signifies as we already know: Beauty, Form, PASSIVE AND RECEPTIVE ACTIVITY of the Apprentice to receive the inspiration and instruction of his superiors, visible and INVISIBLE.
## THE MASONIC TOUCH SYSTEM
The touch of Apprentice is given, generally, by question and answer. He who asks, presses once with the right thumb on the last phalanx of the index finger of the interrogated one.
The interrogated one responds giving, in the same form and in the same place, three spaced touches, as in the Scottish Rite. Sometimes they are two and one in certain Rites, like in the modern French.
Then, comes the recognition by the sacred word. But I cannot teach this in a magazine; thus, LACKING SOMETHING, no profane reader will be able to make himself unduly recognized as a mason.
Such touch with the finger and its response signifies that the Apprentice is requested to indicate (three touches) WHY, WHEN AND WHERE he should act; that is, he should prove his knowledge of the Triple Law that I have expounded since the beginning of this teaching and that forms the base of this Masonic degree.
## THE SYMBOLIC AGE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
## THE SYMBOLIC AGE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
The age of the Apprentice Mason, symbolically speaking, is three years, significant age of the TERNARY COMPOSITION OF MAN, BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT, and also image of the age at which the important "life of relation" begins for the child, who already walks, speaks and begins to live in relation with the environment; and Masonry very correctly wants to signify with this that all the base and all the consequences of our life depend, almost totally, on the USE that we make of our faculties (Words and Actions) within the environment in which we act.
## THE RITUAL ENTRY PROCEDURE
Finally the Apprentice, upon returning at each meeting to the Temple, cannot be there as in any profane place. The correct form is the following:
Placed on the outside, in front of the closed Door of the Temple, his right foot should be linked behind the left. Then, with the closed right hand, he will knock three times (in triangle) on said door. When it opens, he puts his hand "to the order," that is, making a square over the throat, while the arm forms another square with the body and the feet, in turn, are also put in square.
There remains, simply said, the following: rectitude and service PHYSICAL (feet); MORAL (arm and chest) and MENTAL or SPIRITUAL (throat, head).
With the left foot in front, the Apprentice then takes three equal steps. Sliding three times said left foot without lifting it and joining the right at each step. It must be noted that, walking thus, he never leaves the CENTRAL LINE OF THE TEMPLE, and that means that he walks obediently and passively (left foot without lifting it) on the Path of the Masters, (central line) until he is permitted to begin his personal experiences.
## THE WORKING TOOLS AND THEIR SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE
We have seen, also, that they made him work on the Rough Stone—image of himself, of imperfect man—with the MALLET and the CHISEL. It must be taken into account that said MALLET, strong and active instrument, is in the right hand and symbolizes strength, physical and moral strength and, above all, STRENGTH OF WILL.
The CHISEL, sharp and penetrating instrument is in the passive, receptive hand and symbolizes PERCEPTION by Intelligence and Intuition.
Let us note that both instruments are completely useless for working the Rough Stone, if the Apprentice does not "bring" both hands in front of the median line of his body, to strike the chisel with the mallet. He does it three times.
This profound symbol signifies the following: without union of the will with intelligence and with intuition, there is no possible progress either in the physical (first blow), nor in the moral (second blow) nor in the spiritual (third and last blow).
We must still meditate on the fact that, WITHOUT THE MALLET, the chisel does not penetrate the stone, does not change it and it remains ROUGH.
We must still meditate on the fact that, WITHOUT THE MALLET, the chisel does not penetrate the stone, does not change it and it remains ROUGH.
That means that all intellectual, intuitive or any kind of knowledge, gives no result if it is not APPLIED with the will (mallet) and by repeated times (blows).
As you realize, this symbolism is very beautiful and very profound, and the entire Degree of Apprentice is destined to examine the applications of the ternary principle, from the most elevated to the most human.
## SYNTHESIS OF THE APPRENTICE DEGREE IN ALMOST ALL RITES
### Universal Plane
The Universe is composed of three planes; of Wisdom, of Strength and of Form, that is of a Divine World, an Astral World and a Physical World.
### Human Plane
The human Being is also ternary in his constitution, "made in the image of his Creator" and has for that reason, SPIRIT, SOUL and BODY.
### Technical-Philosophical Plane
Everything passes from Thought to word and to Act; correspondence of application of Spirit, Soul and Body.
### Moral Plane
The human being to "polish his rough stone," has to care for his constitution, treating his body through the Strength of the Will and superior Intelligence. That is, he should develop a healthy body, a pure soul and a spirit cultured in the true sense, according to universal laws.
### Social Plane
Everything is hierarchical, everything is governed by Wisdom, and power is no more than the means of action on form, which only thus can be beautiful and just. To put the physical (brute force) in first place, is to invert the natural order. To put moral or passional force in first place is to pervert the natural order by halves and to put superior force, alone, in first place, is also to create a sterile fanaticism.
### Initiatic Plane
First: Learn – Then: COMPARE – Finally, Apply silently.
Summary of the old phrase: KNOW, WILL, DARE and BE SILENT.
### Pure Philosophical Plane
The Universe is mental. Religion, Science, Philosophy and Art are the four manifested aspects of the same thing; Universal Life.
## SOCIAL FUNCTIONS AND THEIR SPIRITUAL CORRESPONDENCE
### Body
That is, manual, material works and all the physical means of action, from tools to capitals, form the Social Body.
### Soul
That is, artistic, ethical, aesthetic functions and their cultural professions and results or of cults form the Social Soul, that is, they educate and orient the FEELING of the collectivity. For that reason it is profoundly just and exact to say: Christian civilization or Confucian civilization.
### Spirit
The real and superior knowledge of the collectivity, from which comes the Moral Authority of its civilization, superior Science and Philosophy, represented by its most eminent thinkers.
## THE SYNTHESIS OF AUTHENTIC INITIATION
### Spirit
The real and superior knowledge of the collectivity, from which comes the Moral Authority of its civilization, superior Science and Philosophy, represented by its most eminent thinkers.
## THE SYNTHESIS OF AUTHENTIC INITIATION
**SYNTHESIS**: The synthesis of a collectivity are its Initiates, for they are the only ones who embrace knowledge from a viewpoint NOT SECTARIAN, NOT INTOLERANT, being able, for that reason, to be COMPREHENSIVE of the different religions, of the different scientific, philosophical and artistic points of view of the collectivity at a determined moment.
For that reason, Masonry, if it were well exercised, would always be, as was its true finality, a neutral terrain of understanding and synthesis of all the sectors of human thought and tending toward a profoundly gnostic end, that is, synthetic in every sense; material, moral and spiritual.
We will see later that the Martinist doctrine is even clearer and expresses this through symbols that go even deeper into these problems that Masonry already puts so beautifully under the eyes of the Apprentices, to accustom them to meditate without reaction before all the facts and to draw from them all the postulates useful for individual and collective progress.

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF MASONIC APPRENTICE SYMBOLISM FOR WARTIME RECONSTRUCTION
This systematic analysis of Masonic symbolism appears in July 1942 when understanding the principles of authentic reconstruction becomes essential for preparing post-war rebuilding based on spiritual rather than merely material foundations. The detailed instruction provides complete methodology for organizing society according to universal principles rather than temporary political arrangements.
**The Heart Regulation Teaching**: The compass placed over the heart with instruction to "learn to regulate the beats of your heart" provides three-level understanding essential for wartime spiritual development. The yogic level (respiratory control) offers practical stress management, the moral level (passion regulation) prevents reactive behavior, and the spiritual level (cosmic rhythm attunement) enables working with rather than against universal forces during crisis periods.
**The Sacred Oath Integration**: The combination of faithfulness in work with silence about initiatic secrets demonstrates how authentic spiritual development requires both active service and discriminating communication. During wartime, when loose talk can have fatal consequences while important work must continue, understanding the balance between appropriate speech and necessary silence becomes essential for effective spiritual service.
During wartime, when loose talk can have fatal consequences while important work must continue, understanding the balance between appropriate speech and necessary silence becomes essential for effective spiritual service.
**The Laryngeal Plexus Development**: The recognition that the throat chakra "must be developed to be able to be a real and conscious servant of the Higher Planes" provides understanding that authentic spiritual communication requires energetic as well as intellectual development. The concept of Human Verb as reflection of Divine Verb demonstrates how individual speech can serve universal rather than merely personal purposes when properly developed.
**The Profound Apron Symbolism**: The geometric analysis of the apron as triangle over rectangle—representing spirit over matter and the human constitution with four lower and three higher principles—provides complete understanding of individual development and social organization. The recognition of the pre-fall state when "superior principles were still outside and above the inferior ones" offers hope that current material domination of spiritual values represents temporary rather than permanent condition.
**The Egyptian Mystery Connection**: The explanation that the Apprentice knows only the Sacred Word for internal temple communication but not the Word of passage for entering and leaving demonstrates graduated spiritual authority based on competence rather than mere democratic equality. During wartime, when leadership selection often depends on political rather than spiritual qualification, understanding authentic hierarchical principles becomes essential for post-war reconstruction.
**The BOAZ Column Significance**: The Sacred Word representing "Beauty, Form, PASSIVE AND RECEPTIVE ACTIVITY" demonstrates that authentic learning requires receptivity to inspiration and instruction from "superiors, visible and INVISIBLE." During periods when external teachers may be unavailable or unreliable, developing capacity for receiving guidance from transcendent sources becomes essential for continued spiritual development.
**The Touch Recognition System**: The finger pressure system requiring knowledge of "WHY, WHEN AND WHERE" to act demonstrates that authentic spiritual authority must understand purpose, timing, and appropriate application rather than merely following rules or orders. During wartime, when circumstances change rapidly and standard procedures may prove inadequate, developing discriminative judgment becomes essential for effective service.
During wartime, when circumstances change rapidly and standard procedures may prove inadequate, developing discriminative judgment becomes essential for effective service.
**The Three-Year Symbolic Age**: The correspondence between the Apprentice's age and the beginning of "life of relation" for children demonstrates that spiritual development parallels natural psychological maturation. The teaching that "all the base and all the consequences of our life depend...on the USE that we make of our faculties (Words and Actions) within the environment in which we act" provides practical guidance for spiritual development during any circumstances.
**The Ritual Entry Procedures**: The detailed description of proper temple entry—right foot behind left, three triangular knocks, hand positions forming squares—demonstrates how physical actions can express spiritual principles. The requirement to maintain "rectitude and service PHYSICAL (feet); MORAL (arm and chest) and MENTAL or SPIRITUAL (throat, head)" provides complete integration of body-soul-spirit development.
**The Central Line Walking**: The instruction that the Apprentice "never leaves the CENTRAL LINE OF THE TEMPLE" while walking "obediently and passively...on the Path of the Masters" until permitted "to begin his personal experiences" demonstrates the progression from guided learning to independent application. During wartime, when premature independence can prove fatal while excessive dependence prevents necessary development, understanding this graduated approach becomes essential.
**The Working Tools Integration**: The profound analysis of mallet (will) and chisel (intelligence/intuition) requiring coordination for effective stone polishing provides complete understanding of individual development methodology. The teaching that "without union of the will with intelligence and with intuition, there is no possible progress" prevents both intellectual speculation without practical application and willful action without adequate understanding.
**The Triple Application**: The three blows representing physical, moral, and spiritual development demonstrates that authentic progress must occur simultaneously on all levels rather than developing one aspect while neglecting others. During wartime, when extreme circumstances can cause individuals to focus exclusively on survival (physical), emotional processing (moral), or spiritual escape (spiritual), maintaining balanced development becomes essential for long-term effectiveness.
During wartime, when extreme circumstances can cause individuals to focus exclusively on survival (physical), emotional processing (moral), or spiritual escape (spiritual), maintaining balanced development becomes essential for long-term effectiveness.
**The Seven-Fold Social Synthesis**: The systematic analysis of Universal, Human, Technical-Philosophical, Moral, Social, Initiatic, and Pure Philosophical planes provides complete framework for understanding individual development within social context. The recognition that authentic Initiates provide synthesis by being "NOT SECTARIAN, NOT INTOLERANT" while remaining "COMPREHENSIVE of different religions, different scientific, philosophical and artistic points of view" offers the educational vision necessary for post-war international cooperation.
**The Social Functions Correspondence**: The identification of Body (material means), Soul (cultural education), and Spirit (superior knowledge) as forming complete social organism demonstrates how individual development serves collective function. During reconstruction periods, when social institutions must be rebuilt or reformed, understanding these correspondences enables creating structures that support rather than oppose spiritual development.
**The Masonic Mission Restoration**: The vision of Masonry as "neutral terrain of understanding and synthesis of all the sectors of human thought...tending toward a profoundly gnostic end, that is, synthetic in every sense" provides the institutional model needed for post-war educational and cultural institutions that serve universal rather than merely national purposes.

## Practical Course in Judicial Astrology (Continuation)
### The Four Elements and Planetary Domiciles System
**Teaching of Surya, S.I.**
PAPUS continues still:
"The ancients taught that the heaven had a dominant action over the physical forces, living beings and the states of matter on Earth. For this reason they gave the name of Earth to everything that was found in the solid state, the name of Water to everything liquid, the name of Air to everything gaseous and the name of Fire to all the manifestations of Force.
It is, therefore, a very gross error to believe that these terms designated the Earth in itself, or terrestrial Water, or atmospheric Air or the Fire of the oven or the stove. The terms antimony earth, water of life, air (or spirit) of wine, philosophical fire, etc., would serve, if necessary, to clarify the concept to the profane.
## THE FOUR ELEMENTAL TRIANGLES
These various states of matter were indicated symbolically by triangles:
**FIRE** by a triangle with the apex upward
**AIR** by a triangle also with the apex upward but cut in its upper part by a transverse line, whose origin we will understand later
**WATER** by a triangle with the apex downward and not cut
**EARTH** by a triangle with the apex downward and cut transversally
Contemplating the figure that follows one will understand perfectly what we explain and its hieroglyphic origin; each one of the Astrological Houses corresponds to one of these four elements:
### THE HOUSE CORRESPONDENCES
**Houses 1, 5, 9** are IGNEOUS and correspond to the Fire element. Connecting the middle of said houses by a straight line inscribes the triangle of Fire in the heaven.
**Houses 2, 6, 10** correspond to Earth and form in the heaven the triangle of the Earth of the Living.
**Houses 3, 7, 11** form the triangle of Air.
**Houses 4, 8, 12** form the triangle of Water or of the Great Celestial Waters.
The triangles of Earth and Water cut each other forming a hexagram or Star of Solomon. The same happens with the triangles of Fire and Air.
Study well, in this respect, the preceding figures.
## PLANETARY INFLUENCES - THE ASTEROIDS - URANUS AND NEPTUNE
The planets exercise a very great influence, according to astrologers, some over others. The Earth suffers an influence from its neighbors, and that influence manifests according to two principal factors: the size and proximity of the planets.
Thus, the Moon, simple satellite, but very nearby star, has a real and positive influence over terrestrial events, while numerous asteroids situated between Mars and Jupiter count for nothing in astrological calculations.
The planetary influence does not belong, in effect, astrologically, to the planet properly speaking, but to its zone of influence, which is represented by the distance between said planet and its nearest neighbor. The asteroids are distributed, then, between the influence of Mars and of Jupiter and cannot be taken into special account.
## PAPUS'S REJECTION OF URANUS AND NEPTUNE
And now, let me be permitted to give a very personal opinion (it is Papus who speaks) and that should not compromise anyone but myself. I pretend that it is by a lamentable error that contemporary astrologers have introduced into their calculations the influence of Neptune and Uranus, the two planets situated beyond Saturn. I am going to explain why.
Jupiter is 1300 times more voluminous than Earth and is distant from it only 155 million leagues. Its influence is evident. Uranus is great only as 75 Earths and is distant 673 million leagues from our Earth. Neptune which is 86 times greater than Earth, is only distant 1073 million leagues.
In my opinion, those two planets and others that will be discovered later, are intermediaries between our solar system and the neighboring solar system. The sense of their rotation indicates it, moreover, for those who know how to observe.
One should, then, connect the influence of Uranus and of Neptune to the influence of Saturn which is worth 864 Earths and which is separated 268 million leagues.
The sense of their rotation indicates it, moreover, for those who know how to observe.
One should, then, connect the influence of Uranus and of Neptune to the influence of Saturn which is worth 864 Earths and which is separated 268 million leagues.
Because, in any case, if contemporary astrologers want to show that they take much account of astronomical discoveries, they will then have to take into account also the existence of the asteroids that circulate between Mars and Jupiter, or leave aside the distant influences of Neptune and Uranus connecting them to the calculations of the sphere or zone of Saturn.
It is for this reason that I do not take into account at all those two planets in this astrological alphabet.
## THE PLANETARY DOMICILE SYSTEM
PAPUS concludes saying:
"We have already seen the houses and the fixed signs of the Zodiac. Each house possesses, for the astrologer, a Lord, a Governor, which is one of the seven planets. Each planet, except the Sun and the Moon, has two domiciles: one positive or diurnal and another negative or nocturnal.
**The Moon** has its unique domicile in the 4th house, in the sign of CANCER.
**The Sun** has its unique domicile in the 5th house in the sign of LEO.
**Mercury** has its diurnal or positive domicile in the 3rd house (GEMINI) and its negative or nocturnal domicile in the 6th house, that is in the sign of VIRGO.
**Venus**: diurnal domicile in TAURUS (2nd house) and nocturnal in LIBRA (7th house).
**Mars**: diurnal domicile in ARIES (1st house) and nocturnal in SCORPIO (8th house).
**Jupiter**: diurnal domicile in PISCES (12th house) and nocturnal in SAGITTARIUS (9th house).
**Saturn**: diurnal domicile in AQUARIUS (11th house) and nocturnal in CAPRICORN (10th house)."
All of which remains clearly summarized in the following figure:
Thus we finish the long and very interesting citation we made from Master Papus to show the bases that, in the Initiatic temples of Antiquity were given to the student of Astrology so that he would be understanding simultaneously, not only the horoscopic side of Astrology, but and very principally its value as key of the symbolism and of the reality of the Universal Laws or Cosmobiology, whose expression through the science of the stars, would be called Astrosophy.
## THE ASPECTS SYSTEM
When two planets are between themselves at distances that, translated into degrees of signs of the Zodiac, are multiples of 30 degrees and sometimes of their half, 15 degrees, they form aspects that have been classified by Astrology into favorable and unfavorable.
Besides there exist neutral aspects, which are favorable if they are produced between two benefic planets, regular if they are produced between a benefic and a malefic; and clearly unfavorable if they are produced between two planets called malefic.
Let us classify, then, first the planets:
**BENEFICS** - Jupiter, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.
**MALEFICS** - Saturn, Mars.
Let us classify, then, first the planets:
**BENEFICS** - Jupiter, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.
**MALEFICS** - Saturn, Mars.
There are, besides, Uranus and Neptune, modern, whose influence is disputed, but which are considered rather, Uranus as malefic and Neptune, as benefic. There are diverse opinions.
## THE COMPLETE ASPECTS TABLE
Summarizing we have:
| **ASPECT** | **DISTANCE** | **CLASSIFICATION** |
|------------|--------------|-------------------|
| **CONJUNCTION** | 0° | Major and neutral aspect |
| **SEMISEXTILE** | 30° | Minor and favorable aspect |
| **SEMISQUARE** | 45° | Minor and unfavorable aspect |
| **SEXTILE** | 60° | Major and favorable aspect |
| **SQUARE** | 90° | Major and unfavorable aspect |
| **TRINE** | 120° | Major and favorable aspect |
| **SESQUISQUARE** | 135° | Minor and unfavorable aspect |
| **QUINCUNX** | 150° | Minor and favorable aspect |
| **OPPOSITION** | 180° | Major and unfavorable aspect |
## ASPECT NOTATION SYMBOLS
The notation of the aspects is made through conventional signs originating from their own measure "inscribed" in the circle, and which are the following:

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF CLASSICAL ASTROLOGICAL INSTRUCTION FOR WARTIME COSMIC UNDERSTANDING
This systematic astrological teaching appears in July 1942 when understanding cosmic forces becomes essential for navigating unprecedented global challenges requiring cooperation with rather than opposition to universal principles. The detailed instruction provides tools for working with natural laws rather than attempting to overcome them through purely material force.
**The Four States of Matter Teaching**: The explanation that Earth, Water, Air, and Fire represent "states of matter" rather than literal elements demonstrates how ancient wisdom encoded scientific understanding in symbolic form. The examples—antimony earth, water of life, spirit of wine, philosophical fire—show how traditional alchemical language described chemical and physical processes long before modern scientific terminology. During wartime, when scientific resources may be limited or misdirected, understanding how traditional knowledge preserves practical information becomes essential.
**The Symbolic Triangle System**: The geometric representation of the four elements through upward and downward triangles, with and without transverse lines, provides precise symbolic language for cosmic forces. The Fire triangle (apex up, uncut) and Air triangle (apex up, cut) represent ascending forces with different qualities, while Water (apex down, uncut) and Earth (apex down, cut) represent descending forces with corresponding variations. This system demonstrates how spiritual knowledge operates through exact rather than vague symbolism.
This system demonstrates how spiritual knowledge operates through exact rather than vague symbolism.
**The House-Element Correspondence**: The assignment of houses 1-5-9 to Fire, 2-6-10 to Earth, 3-7-11 to Air, and 4-8-12 to Water creates systematic framework for understanding how cosmic influences manifest through different life departments. The formation of triangular patterns connecting these houses demonstrates geometric relationships underlying astrological interpretation. During wartime, when understanding the timing and nature of various challenges becomes crucial, this systematic approach provides reliable methodology for practical application.
**The Hexagram Formation**: The explanation that Earth and Water triangles intersect to form the Star of Solomon, as do Fire and Air triangles, reveals how opposing forces create stable geometric patterns. This demonstrates the principle that apparent conflicts often represent complementary aspects of higher unity—essential understanding during periods when international conflicts obscure underlying human solidarity.
**The Planetary Size-Distance Relationship**: The systematic analysis of planetary influences based on both size and proximity provides scientific foundation for astrological practice. The Moon's powerful influence despite being "simple satellite" due to proximity, versus asteroids having no influence despite being numerous, demonstrates that spiritual laws operate through natural rather than arbitrary principles. This prevents superstitious approach to astrology while maintaining recognition of genuine cosmic influences.
**The Zone of Influence Concept**: The teaching that planetary influence belongs not to "the planet properly speaking" but to "its zone of influence...represented by the distance between said planet and its nearest neighbor" provides sophisticated understanding of how cosmic forces operate through spatial relationships rather than mere physical properties. This concept enables precise astrological calculation while maintaining scientific respectability.
**Papus's Uranus-Neptune Rejection**: The detailed argument against including Uranus and Neptune in astrological calculations—based on their extreme distance (673 and 1073 million leagues respectively) compared to their relatively small size (75 and 86 Earth volumes)—demonstrates discriminative approach to astrological tradition. The suggestion that these planets serve as "intermediaries between our solar system and the neighboring solar system" shows how spiritual understanding can anticipate scientific discoveries about galactic structure.
The suggestion that these planets serve as "intermediaries between our solar system and the neighboring solar system" shows how spiritual understanding can anticipate scientific discoveries about galactic structure.
**The Consistency Principle**: Papus's argument that if modern planets are included, then asteroids must also be considered, or else distant influences should be "connected to the calculations of the sphere or zone of Saturn," demonstrates logical consistency in astrological methodology. During wartime, when systematic thinking becomes essential for effective planning and action, this approach provides model for maintaining intellectual integrity under pressure.
**The Seven-Planet Traditional System**: The return to the classical seven-planet system (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) demonstrates how traditional knowledge often proves more practical than modern complications. The systematic assignment of domiciles—luminaries (Sun, Moon) having single houses, other planets having dual diurnal/nocturnal domiciles—creates manageable yet complete system for practical application.
**The Domicile Logic**: The arrangement where each planet rules signs that reflect its essential nature—Sun in Leo (royal), Moon in Cancer (maternal), Mercury in Gemini (communicative) and Virgo (analytical), Venus in Taurus (sensual) and Libra (harmonious), Mars in Aries (initiating) and Scorpio (penetrating), Jupiter in Sagittarius (philosophical) and Pisces (compassionate), Saturn in Capricorn (structural) and Aquarius (limiting)—demonstrates how astrological correspondences reflect natural rather than arbitrary relationships.
**The Initiatic Temple Connection**: The emphasis that this instruction comes from "the bases that, in the Initiatic temples of Antiquity were given to the student of Astrology" establishes connection with authentic traditional transmission rather than mere modern speculation. The integration of "horoscopic" practical application with understanding of "Universal Laws or Cosmobiology" through "Astrosophy" demonstrates how spiritual science serves both practical and theoretical purposes.
**The Aspect Classification System**: The systematic arrangement of planetary aspects from conjunction (0°) through opposition (180°) in multiples of 30° and 15° provides geometric foundation for understanding planetary relationships. The classification into major/minor and favorable/unfavorable categories creates practical framework for interpretation while maintaining recognition of neutral aspects that depend on the planets involved.
The classification into major/minor and favorable/unfavorable categories creates practical framework for interpretation while maintaining recognition of neutral aspects that depend on the planets involved.
**The Benefic-Malefic Balance**: The classification of planets into benefics (Jupiter, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon) and malefics (Saturn, Mars) while acknowledging "diverse opinions" about modern planets demonstrates balanced approach that maintains traditional wisdom while remaining open to legitimate revision. During wartime, when extremist positions dominate public discourse, this moderate approach provides model for maintaining both conviction and flexibility.
**The Conditional Aspect Interpretation**: The teaching that neutral aspects become favorable, regular, or unfavorable depending on whether they occur between benefic planets, mixed planets, or malefic planets demonstrates sophisticated understanding that astrological influences depend on context rather than operating through simple mechanical rules. This principle applies to all forms of spiritual practice during crisis periods—techniques that support development under normal circumstances may prove harmful under extreme stress unless adapted to changed conditions.

## Progressive Course in Asana Yoga (Continuation)
### The Sacred Padmasana and Meditation Prerequisites
**Teachings of Asuri Kapila**
It must not be forgotten that the principal realizations for the obtaining of Yoga are:
**[translate:YAMA]**: not to kill nor destroy any manifestation of life, to be truthful and not to waste sexual forces for the mere pleasure of sensuality. This is the first stage of [translate:RAJA YOGA].
Then comes **[translate:NIYAMA]**, which is external purification, joy, methodical study and complete devotion to God. This is the second stage of [translate:RAJA YOGA].
**[translate:ASANA]** is the third stage of the so-called **[translate:ASHTANGA-YOGA]**, while **[translate:PRANA-YAMA]** is the fourth.
## THE SUPERIORITY OF ASANAS OVER ORDINARY EXERCISE
The ordinary physical exercises develop only the superficial muscles; with them it is possible to become a perfect athlete with a beautiful physique. But the Asanas are made very especially to conscientiously develop the internal organs, the liver, the intestines, the kidneys, the pancreas, the brain, the lungs, and very especially to bring a vivifying stimulus to the complex system of endocrine glands (thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, hypophysis, pineal, etc.) that play an important role in Nature's economy for the maintenance of health, in metabolism, growth, and very especially to permit the harmony and perfect nutrition of the different cells that compose the tissues of our physical body.
Drawings corresponding to each Asana will be given here, in these courses, as the commentaries about them appear.
Drawings corresponding to each Asana will be given here, in these courses, as the commentaries about them appear.
The current race needs to improve itself, because multiple factors of modern life have carried the generation of the same in degenerated form physically, mentally and spiritually. Our desire is that, as these Asanas are practiced, interesting results are obtained, in order to prepare a future race of men and women more apt for life and especially capacitated, these latter, to carry out the mission of mother, (which is the most sacred of all) and to be able thus to give their children healthy, beautiful and perfect, physically, mentally and spiritually.
## ASANAS FOR MEDITATION PRACTICE - [translate:DHYANA]
The Gurus of India recommend, for the practice of meditation and also for what they call **[translate:JAPA]** (repetition of mantrams and sacred words), to exercise four Asanas that bear respectively the names of: **[translate:PADMASANA]**, **[translate:SIDDHA]**, **[translate:SWASTICA]** and **[translate:SUKHASANA]**.
It is necessary to know the following: if the perfect realization of an Asana is not first secured, one will never be able to arrive at perfect meditation. The more tranquil one is in the Asana, the easier it will be to be able to concentrate and focus the mind toward a single purpose.
One will begin first with five minutes, then with ten, twenty, etc., until arriving at one hour, and only then will one be able to give oneself account of the infinite peace and tranquility that will invade the physical body, and that, by reflection, will reach the mind.
When one sits in an Asana, one must think the following: "I am as firm as a rock, nothing can shake me." One must give the mind this powerful suggestion at least a dozen times; then the Asana will be realized perfectly.
## THE LIVING STATUE REQUIREMENT
The body of the practitioner must resemble a living statue, when this Asana is practiced for meditation. After six months of constant practice, it will be possible to remain in an Asana for many hours without feeling the slightest fatigue or discomfort.
If one feels pain in the legs when beginning, one will rest for some instants giving oneself some gentle massages with the hands along the legs and one returns to repeat the Asana. One must practice them in the morning upon rising, at midday and before going to bed.
Put the head, neck and trunk in straight line; this is very important, more ahead we will explain why. Do not do another Asana before having well dominated the first one.
## THE LOTUS POSTURE - [translate:PADMASANA]
Today we will begin with the one called **[translate:PADMASANA]** which means, in Sanskrit, the "lotus posture." **[translate:Padma]** means lotus, and **[translate:Asana]**, posture, because when it is carried out it presents all the appearances of a lotus flower, reason for which the Gurus of India called it thus.
It is also known by another name: **[translate:KAMALASANA]**. **[translate:Kamala]** means equally lotus. Among the four postures recommended by the classic Masters of Yoga for the practice of meditation, Padmasana is considered as the most important and the most classic, being also the best to put oneself in communication with the more subtle planes of Nature.
All the **[translate:RISHIS]** speak of this posture in the most auspicious terms, it is considered a vitalizing, vivifying Asana and very recommendable for women, being able to be practiced as much by an aged person as by children.
## TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION
Sit on the floor on a rug extending the legs forward; then place the right foot on the left thigh, and the left foot on the right thigh, as is indicated in Figure No. 1.
It is necessary to maintain the trunk, chest and neck very straight during the practice of Padmasana. We recommend very specially to take into account these counsels that assure success and visible results.
The student should have a special little corner to practice the Asanas, always the same, tranquil, apart from all annoying noise, interruptions, bad odors, dirty waters, contaminated air, the most appropriate being a little room dedicated especially for that purpose.
## THE IDEAL PRACTICE ENVIRONMENT
The ideal is also to be able to realize the Asanas on a terrace with air and sun, receiving in such form the organism triple benefit: the stimulus of the Asanas, the air that will strengthen the lungs and the sun that will nourish and tonify all the tissues, very important factors for health.
Now then, if one has a little room to dedicate exclusively to this, it is ideal; one must use it like a true sanctuary, penetrating into it with devotion, seriousness and faith in what one is going to realize, burning if possible, some perfume to purify the environment, as is accustomed to be done, before all spiritual realization, in the Orient.
No one should be made to penetrate into it, so that thus the personal aura is not disharmonized, which by the continual presence of the disciple will be, naturally, forming day by day, and charging itself with his emotional and mental emanations; this last warning is very important for the realization of highly spiritual works, where the mind must be in a perfect state of receptivity.
## PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Now then, any corner is good provided it is not interrupted during the practice of the Asanas, if that purpose is not sought and only the side of physical improvement and beautification of the organism is desired. Be as constant as possible and practice every day at the same hours.
Do not do Asanas with the stomach loaded with foods and especially with liquids, for it could bring serious mishaps not to take this warning into account. The best is to practice always on an empty stomach.
Be as constant as possible and practice every day at the same hours.
Do not do Asanas with the stomach loaded with foods and especially with liquids, for it could bring serious mishaps not to take this warning into account. The best is to practice always on an empty stomach.
Do not do Asanas if one is in a bad mood or if the mind is found restless, loaded with many and varied thoughts, such as hatred, rancor, envy, sensuality, etc. One must enter into that small temple with the mind completely free of material things, or speaking in terms of Yoga, leave the **[translate:VRITTIS]** outside so that **[translate:CHITTA]** is completely tranquil like the surface of a lake, without waves, because, as says PATANJALI, the Ven. Master of Yoga: "Yoga is not permitting that the mental matter (Chitta) take diverse forms (Vrittis)."
Do not tire oneself excessively; do the Asanas very slowly, without violence; do not abuse them in the first times; remember what cannot be done in one day, will be done in five or ten, gradually; that all study needs its technique and its adequate time.
## THE CLASSIC MEDITATION POSTURE
As we have said previously, Padmasana is almost always the first posture that those who dedicate themselves to Asana Yoga adopt, for being the most classic; it gives for **[translate:DHYANA]** the due state of physical, mental and spiritual tranquility. It is quite easy to realize with exercises, and besides, grants a very special rest to the physical body; the wise Gurus had need to find a posture that reunited all those qualities and that could be practiced hour after hour without the physical body resisting, without causing it harm and also so that, during the practice of the different Yogas, the mind could abstract itself for long hours; and thus was born that beautiful Asana that bears the title of Padmasana.
It is generally with it that the yogis realize the so-called **[translate:PRANA-YAMA]** (control of respiration) and **[translate:JAPA]** (recitation of prayers and sacred words: mantrams).
The more tranquility the body and mind acquire, the easier it will be for the student to realize, later, yogistic meditation. Only when one is capable of remaining entire hours in that Asana, will one arrive at a complete control and dominion of body and mind.
## THE UNFORGETTABLE SPECTACLE
It is a truly unforgettable spectacle, that always remains engraved in the mind, to observe a yogi or ascetic delivered in meditation in Padmasana; one would believe it a bronze statue, untiring and hieratic, that nothing or no one can disturb.
Upon practicing this Asana, some pains will be felt in the legs in the first times; but one must not be alarmed; this happens for lack of practice. Little by little those discomforts will disappear as the muscles and tendons of the legs become accustomed.
Upon practicing this Asana, some pains will be felt in the legs in the first times; but one must not be alarmed; this happens for lack of practice. Little by little those discomforts will disappear as the muscles and tendons of the legs become accustomed.
Nothing is done without small sacrifices. But one will be amply rewarded with time, and will feel great joy and immense well-being during the moments in which Padmasana is realized.
## CONCENTRATION POINTS
When Padmasana is practiced, close the eyes, concentrating the mind on the space that is between the two eyebrows, called in yogistic term **[translate:TRIKUTE]**, the "sacred mountain of three peaks."
One can also concentrate the mind on the **[translate:chakra]** or cardiac plexus, which is usually called Lotus of the Heart, **[translate:ANAHATA CHAKRA]** in Sanskrit, "Seat of the Wheel of Life," situated in the center of the heart.
And the concentration can equally be realized, during Padmasana, as much on the different plexuses that will be made known later, as on the tip of the nose, which comes to be the "Registrar of internal vision." This last meditation needs a very special technique that we will make known in other courses, when the method of concentration on internal and external objects is explained, etc...
There exist a dozen variants of Padmasana that we will study before knowing the other Asanas that follow it.
## THE PURIFICATION PROCESS
The yogi, before realizing the supreme ideal of Yoga, which is to unite his divine I with the universal I, begins first by purifying his physical body and then his mind, which will bring inexorably by reflection, the purification of the Superior Vehicles.

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF SACRED YOGA INSTRUCTION FOR WARTIME SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
This systematic yoga teaching appears in July 1942 when practical methods for maintaining physical and psychological stability become essential for surviving and serving during prolonged exposure to extreme stress. The detailed instruction provides accessible tools for developing inner resources that function independently of external circumstances.
**The Eight-Limbed Path Foundation**: The systematic presentation of Yama and Niyama as prerequisites to Asana and Pranayama demonstrates that authentic yoga practice requires ethical and psychological preparation before attempting physical techniques. The emphasis on non-violence, truthfulness, and sexual restraint (Yama) followed by purification, joy, study, and devotion (Niyama) provides complete moral foundation necessary for effective spiritual development during crisis periods.
**The Internal Organ Development**: The teaching that ordinary exercise develops only "superficial muscles" while Asanas "conscientiously develop the internal organs...liver, intestines, kidneys, pancreas, brain, lungs" and especially the "complex system of endocrine glands" provides understanding of how yoga practice affects the subtle physiological systems that determine overall health and psychological stability. During wartime, when external medical resources may be limited, developing practices that enhance natural healing capacity becomes essential.
**The Endocrine System Integration**: The specific mention of thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, hypophysis, and pineal glands demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how yoga practice affects hormonal balance and metabolic function. The recognition that these glands "play an important role in Nature's economy for the maintenance of health, in metabolism, growth" and cellular nutrition provides scientific foundation for yoga's therapeutic effects. During stress periods, when endocrine disruption commonly occurs, practices that restore natural hormonal balance prove invaluable.
**The Racial Improvement Vision**: The statement that "the current race needs to improve itself" because "multiple factors of modern life have carried the generation...in degenerated form physically, mentally and spiritually" demonstrates understanding that collective spiritual evolution requires individual transformation. The goal of preparing "a future race of men and women more apt for life" with women "especially capacitated...to carry out the mission of mother" provides evolutionary perspective on yoga practice that transcends merely personal benefits.
The goal of preparing "a future race of men and women more apt for life" with women "especially capacitated...to carry out the mission of mother" provides evolutionary perspective on yoga practice that transcends merely personal benefits.
**The Sacred Motherhood Emphasis**: The recognition of motherhood as "the most sacred of all" missions and the goal of enabling mothers "to give their children healthy, beautiful and perfect, physically, mentally and spiritually" demonstrates understanding that yoga practice serves species evolution through improved prenatal and postnatal conditions. During wartime, when family structures face extreme stress, practices that support rather than compete with family responsibilities become especially valuable.
**The Four Meditation Postures**: The systematic presentation of Padmasana, Siddha, Swastica, and Sukhasana as specifically recommended for meditation and Japa provides graduated instruction adapted to different constitutional types and developmental levels. This prevents the common error of attempting to impose uniform practices regardless of individual capacity or circumstances.
**The Perfect Realization Requirement**: The teaching that "if the perfect realization of an Asana is not first secured, one will never be able to arrive at perfect meditation" demonstrates the necessity of thorough preparation before attempting advanced practices. The progressive timing—five minutes, ten, twenty, until reaching one hour—provides practical methodology for systematic development rather than attempting immediate mastery.
**The Rock-Firm Suggestion**: The specific instruction to think "I am as firm as a rock, nothing can shake me" while giving "the mind this powerful suggestion at least a dozen times" provides practical technique for developing psychological stability through combining physical posture with mental affirmation. During wartime, when external circumstances constantly threaten psychological equilibrium, such specific stabilizing techniques become invaluable.
**The Living Statue Standard**: The requirement that "the body of the practitioner must resemble a living statue" during meditation practice provides concrete standard for evaluating progress while emphasizing the complete stillness necessary for deep concentration. The promise that "after six months of constant practice, it will be possible to remain in an Asana for many hours without feeling the slightest fatigue or discomfort" offers realistic timeline for achieving practical competence.
The promise that "after six months of constant practice, it will be possible to remain in an Asana for many hours without feeling the slightest fatigue or discomfort" offers realistic timeline for achieving practical competence.
**The Sacred Space Creation**: The detailed instruction for creating appropriate practice environment—dedicated space, tranquil atmosphere, freedom from interruptions, pure air, appropriate times—demonstrates understanding that spiritual practice requires supportive rather than merely convenient conditions. The emphasis on treating the practice space "like a true sanctuary, penetrating into it with devotion, seriousness and faith" elevates yoga practice from mere exercise to genuine spiritual discipline.
**The Aura Protection**: The warning that "no one should be made to penetrate into it, so that thus the personal aura is not disharmonized" demonstrates understanding of subtle energetic influences that affect meditation practice. The recognition that continual practice in the same space creates "emotional and mental emanations" that support rather than distract from spiritual work provides practical guidance for establishing effective practice conditions.
**The Empty Stomach Requirement**: The specific instruction to practice "always on an empty stomach" and never with "the stomach loaded with foods and especially with liquids" provides essential safety guidance while demonstrating understanding that digestion and subtle energy circulation interfere with each other. During wartime, when food may be scarce or irregular, understanding optimal timing for spiritual practice becomes especially important.
**The Vritti-Chitta Teaching**: The Patanjali quotation that "Yoga is not permitting that the mental matter (Chitta) take diverse forms (Vrittis)" provides precise psychological understanding of the meditation process as mental stabilization rather than mere relaxation. The instruction to "leave the Vrittis outside so that Chitta is completely tranquil like the surface of a lake, without waves" offers specific methodology for achieving meditative states.
**The Padmasana Supremacy**: The designation of Padmasana as "the most important and the most classic" among meditation postures, being "the best to put oneself in communication with the more subtle planes of Nature," demonstrates its special effectiveness for transcendent consciousness rather than merely physical health. The universal recommendation by "all the Rishis" and suitability for women, elderly, and children indicates its safety and broad applicability.
The universal recommendation by "all the Rishis" and suitability for women, elderly, and children indicates its safety and broad applicability.
**The Concentration Point Options**: The systematic presentation of different concentration points—Trikute (between eyebrows), Anahata Chakra (heart center), various plexuses, or nose tip—provides adapted instruction for different temperaments and developmental stages. The recognition that nose-tip concentration requires "a very special technique" demonstrates discriminative teaching that matches methods to student capacity.
**The Progressive Purification**: The teaching that yogis begin with physical body purification, then mental purification, leading "inexorably by reflection" to "purification of the Superior Vehicles" demonstrates systematic understanding of how spiritual development proceeds through natural stages rather than arbitrary techniques. This provides hope that sustained practice produces inevitable rather than merely hoped-for results.

## Cosmic Waves
### Practical Monthly Astrology for June 1942 War Period
**By a S.I. of the Martinist Order**
Until now I always refrained from publishing predictions or astrological sections due to the difficulty of making absolutely scientific predictions, and which had as base a horoscope calculated with all meticulousness. Nevertheless, I offer today my collaboration to **LA INICIACIÓN** in the desire to change the conviction that some have, including many esotericists, that Astrology is a marvelous science, but that it doesn't serve in practice.
We must imagine our globe, the countries, the peoples, the human collectivities, as INDIVIDUAL BEINGS, nature, like a radio station where the two possibilities exist: emission and reception. The horoscope of a determined collectivity or individuality corresponds to the wave, to the number of kilocycles, of this "apparatus."
## THE COSMIC RADIO METAPHOR
The great station of the Firmament radiates nothing but harmonious music; but we, with our defective apparatus, or by not knowing how to serve ourselves with it, receive, transmit or come to radiate such harmonious melodies.
The horoscope constitutes, then, for the study of the occultist, one of the first steps to arrive at knowledge of the vibration that surrounds him, to become more conscious of himself, as well as to arrive at a more profound comprehension of his neighbor and of all creation.
If we know that a determined station radiates a beautiful sonata of Beethoven, we will try to tune our apparatus so as not to lose a note; but if we know that the envelope, the atmosphere of the Earth, is too dense, and provokes tempests, by which the wave cannot arrive harmoniously to our apparatus, we close it so that the lamps do not burn out.
## THE EXPERIENTIAL VALIDATION
## THE EXPERIENTIAL VALIDATION
Experience has demonstrated to me that the transit (passage) of the planets in the most important angles of our horoscope, can be stronger than the planetary direction, if we know how to serve ourselves with the vibrations thus originated.
Many consider themselves already "above" those influences; but if they analyzed minutely their acts and ideas they would understand that, as they evolve, they become more sensitive to these vibrations and respond to them in more elevated proportion.
The Sun being one of the essential points of our horoscope, causes the most powerful vibrations and for that reason I will explain, monthly, who will feel during such month, a strong wave between the degree where the Sun is found and the position of one of the most important planets.
## INFLUENCES DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE 1942
### FOR THOSE BORN: March 17-19, June 18-20, December 19-24
**Neptune square Sun** – Causes an unfavorable period to psychism due to the danger of deceptions, betrayals and confused situations. Neptune is the planet of clairvoyance, of intuition, and, if we receive its ray by an angle that causes an unfavorable reaction, our vision, as much in the intellectual plane as in the spiritual, can be disturbed, and the consequences can be nefarious in our life.
### FOR THOSE BORN: January 17-19, May 13-20, July 20-22, September 20-22, October 18-21
**Neptune in good aspect with the Sun** – Causes vibrations opposite to the previous ones; develops psychic faculties; intuition gives us clarifications, ideas, desire for production, for evasion and to expand our horizon, whether by investigation of the superior planes, whether by travels and studies of the occult sciences or of art.
### FOR THOSE BORN: February 19-23, May 21-25, August 23-27, November 22-26
**Uranus in bad angles with the Sun** – We can call this vibration, the ray of impulsivity and precipitation and, in consequence, changes, travels or unfavorable changes, disputes, lawsuits, accidents, wounds or operations, begun precipitately, or of bad results because of precipitation, can supervene. Calm and reflection are the best means to neutralize this vibration.
### FOR THOSE BORN: January 20-23, March 21-23, June 23-25, September 23-25, and eventually for those born May 21-25
**Uranus in good aspects with the Sun** – Provokes the great changes, inspiration or material and spiritual progress due to a superior comprehension. Whoever studies the occult sciences and was born on those dates, can obtain, in this period, greater knowledge, if he knows how to take advantage of the occasions, the ideas that are presented to him or the relations with the persons to whose contact he arrives.
Whoever studies the occult sciences and was born on those dates, can obtain, in this period, greater knowledge, if he knows how to take advantage of the occasions, the ideas that are presented to him or the relations with the persons to whose contact he arrives.
Uranus gives innovations, inventions and inspiration, as much in the profession, in technical activity as in artistic and intellectual. It gives the possibility, to them and to those born January 17-19, etc... to expand the horizon, and also perspective of favorable travels or changes.
### FOR THOSE BORN: February 22-27, May 24-30, August 26-September 1, November 25-30
**Saturn in bad aspect with the Sun** – Above all as a consequence of this aspect I publish now this study on vibrations, since the persons influenced by it need to be warned so that, DURING THIS MONTH OF JUNE and also DURING JULY, they pay care to their health.
Saturn and Uranus are found in the first degrees of Gemini and will provoke many diseases of the respiratory ways and lungs. In past years, those two planets were in the sign of Taurus and occasioned many appendicitis operations, diseases of the glandular system and, by reflection, the diseases of Scorpio, that is, of all the genital system and lower belly.
Currently they influence more on the composition of the blood (reflection of Sagittarius) and on the lungs, they will provoke, for many not only bronchitis or asthma, which can become chronic, but also strong and acute crises of rheumatism. All the possibilities cannot be determined without individual horoscopes; but in general, all who were born on the indicated dates and in the immediately following days, should take great precautions against colds and against the possibility that diseases become chronic.
Such vibration, considered as one of the most unfavorable, gives a great tendency to depression, to pessimism and, as thoughts attract events, we are under such vibration more exposed to contrarieties and to limitations of our action.
## THE NEUTRALIZATION STRATEGY
The best manner to neutralize this influence is to utilize that epoch for a reclusion, physical or mental, voluntary, trying to deepen profoundly in ourselves, rather than seeking expansion. That is evident, since if we seek much contact with others in this period we will have contrarieties. This doesn't mean that we should let ourselves be depressed or be pessimistic, on the contrary; we should react with all the energy that internal joy gives and not close our eyes to the beauty that surrounds us, seeking thus a support against such vibration.
In active, professional and commercial life, persons born on such dates should for this period, count on obstacles, delays and difficulties in realization.
### FOR THOSE BORN: January 22-28, March 23-29, June 24-30, September 23-30
In active, professional and commercial life, persons born on such dates should for this period, count on obstacles, delays and difficulties in realization.
### FOR THOSE BORN: January 22-28, March 23-29, June 24-30, September 23-30
**Saturn in good aspect with the Sun** – This vibration gives a profundity that, in radio, can be compared with a beautiful organ concert. It is the possibility of deepening our thoughts and knowledge and of obtaining results and profits, by security, by sincerity, fidelity, economy and prudence. Everything that needs our reasoning, that takes time to germinate, that has tendency to stabilize our life, everything that refers to soil or to any base, should be initiated under this vibration.
### FOR THOSE BORN: March 19-29, October 22-31, December 20-30
**Jupiter in bad aspects with the Sun** – It is an aspect of little gravity; only makes us somewhat lazy and gives certain physical and mental indifference, from which contrarieties can result by committing faults against our superiors or our health. We should make an effort so that our actions are always in accordance with the "LAW". The word "Law" must be understood in three senses: natural, civil and spiritual.
### FOR THOSE BORN: February 17-27, May 18-28, June 19-30, August 21-31, October 22-November 1
**Jupiter in trine sextile and conjunction with the Sun** – It is the vibration considered as the most benefic and that permits the greatest realizations; the rejuvenation of the physical, the acceptance of appropriate treatments and the new conceptions that permit the realization of the same.
During this period we can realize what in other times seemed impossible to us, since we have now, in the physical and social plane, the support of superiors and chiefs, and in mental and spiritual plane, the protection of those who already arrived at superior knowledge and degrees, less to give us initiation, which is more indicated by Neptune and Uranus; rather, to facilitate the realization.
## METHODOLOGICAL NOTES
For now I will limit myself to the vibrations caused by these four slowest planets, since the rapid movement of the others doesn't permit monthly interpretation. I want to advance besides, that the indicated dates can be considered as beginning a day before and ending a day after the periods marked for those born then, depending on the year in which the person was born.
If the anniversary is the beginning of the indicated period, he will feel the marked effects rather at the beginning of the month, and even can have felt it since the month of May. If the anniversary, on the contrary, is found at the end of one of the indicated periods, then the influence will be felt rather in the second part of June and sometimes during July, as I indicated.
If the anniversary, on the contrary, is found at the end of one of the indicated periods, then the influence will be felt rather in the second part of June and sometimes during July, as I indicated.
Let us make ourselves conscious of ourselves and of the vibrations that surround us so that, instead of being like radio-receivers little selective and badly tuned, that provoke dissonance, we arrive at being good receivers and also emitters, receiving harmonized waves from the Firmament and radiating around us vibrations of **HEALTH, JOY AND WISDOM**.

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF WARTIME ASTROLOGICAL GUIDANCE FOR CONSCIOUS NAVIGATION
This remarkable astrological analysis appears in July 1942 as a practical demonstration of how cosmic forces can provide guidance for navigating the unprecedented challenges of global warfare. The systematic presentation offers tools for conscious cooperation with celestial influences rather than unconscious victimization by circumstances beyond understanding or control.
**The Radio Station Metaphor**: The brilliant comparison of human consciousness to "radio stations where the two possibilities exist: emission and reception" with horoscopes representing "the wave, to the number of kilocycles" provides accessible understanding of how astrological influences operate through resonance rather than mechanical causation. During wartime, when communication systems face disruption, understanding consciousness as capable of both receiving and transmitting cosmic influences becomes essential for maintaining connection with transcendent guidance.
**The Cosmic Harmony Teaching**: The recognition that "the great station of the Firmament radiates nothing but harmonious music" while "we, with our defective apparatus...receive, transmit or come to radiate such harmonious melodies" demonstrates that cosmic influences are inherently beneficial but require properly tuned consciousness for optimal reception. This prevents fatalistic approaches to astrology while maintaining recognition that individual consciousness determines the quality of astrological influence received.
**The Evolutionary Sensitivity**: The profound observation that "as they evolve, they become more sensitive to these vibrations and respond to them in more elevated proportion" contradicts the common belief that spiritual development makes one "above" astrological influences. During wartime, when extreme circumstances can either accelerate or arrest spiritual development, understanding how genuine evolution increases rather than decreases cosmic sensitivity becomes crucial for continued growth.
During wartime, when extreme circumstances can either accelerate or arrest spiritual development, understanding how genuine evolution increases rather than decreases cosmic sensitivity becomes crucial for continued growth.
**The Transit vs. Direction Emphasis**: The practical observation that "the transit (passage) of the planets in the most important angles of our horoscope, can be stronger than the planetary direction, if we know how to serve ourselves with the vibrations thus originated" provides accessible astrological technique that doesn't require complex calculations. During crisis periods, when detailed horoscopic resources may be unavailable, understanding how to work with current planetary positions relative to birth data enables continued astrological practice.
**The June 1942 War Period Specifics**: The systematic analysis of planetary influences during this critical wartime month provides concrete demonstration of how astrological guidance operates during historical crisis. The specific birth date ranges and their corresponding planetary influences offer practical tools for individuals seeking to understand their role in larger historical processes.
**The Neptune Square Sun Crisis**: The warning about deceptions, betrayals, and confused situations for those born March 17-19, June 18-20, December 19-24 demonstrates how astrological guidance can provide advance warning of psychological vulnerabilities during periods when external deception becomes widespread. The recognition that disturbed spiritual vision "can be nefarious in our life" acknowledges the serious consequences of impaired discrimination during wartime.
**The Neptune Trine Benefits**: The contrasting description of enhanced psychic faculties, expanded horizons, and attraction to occult studies for those born in different periods shows how the same planetary energy can manifest constructively or destructively depending on the astrological angle. This provides hope that challenging periods can be transformed into opportunities through proper understanding and response.
**The Uranus Impulsivity Warning**: The identification of "the ray of impulsivity and precipitation" leading to "changes, travels...disputes, lawsuits, accidents, wounds or operations, begun precipitately" provides specific caution against reactive behavior during periods when calm and reflection become essential for avoiding self-created difficulties. During wartime, when impulsive decisions can have fatal consequences, such warnings prove invaluable.
During wartime, when impulsive decisions can have fatal consequences, such warnings prove invaluable.
**The Uranus Innovation Opportunity**: The positive description of Uranus bringing "innovations, inventions and inspiration...in the profession, in technical activity as in artistic and intellectual" demonstrates how the same planetary force that can cause rash decisions can also provide breakthrough insights when properly channeled. During wartime, when creative solutions become essential for survival and service, understanding how to cooperate with rather than resist innovative impulses becomes crucial.
**The Saturn Health Crisis**: The specific warning about respiratory diseases, blood composition problems, and chronic conditions during June-July 1942 provides remarkably precise medical astrology that acknowledges both physical and psychological dimensions of planetary influence. The connection between Saturn-Uranus in Gemini affecting lungs and the recommendation for "great precautions against colds" demonstrates practical preventive applications of astrological knowledge.
**The Historical Accuracy**: The reference to Saturn-Uranus previously being "in the sign of Taurus" and causing "many appendicitis operations, diseases of the glandular system" provides verifiable historical claims that could be tested against medical statistics, demonstrating confidence in astrological predictions based on empirical observation rather than mere speculation.
**The Depression-Pessimism Warning**: The psychological insight that Saturn square Sun "gives a great tendency to depression, to pessimism and, as thoughts attract events, we are under such vibration more exposed to contrarieties" provides understanding of how planetary influences operate through mental states that then attract corresponding experiences. During wartime, when maintaining hope becomes essential for effective action, recognizing astrological contributions to psychological states enables conscious counter-measures.
**The Voluntary Reclusion Strategy**: The sophisticated recommendation to "utilize that epoch for a reclusion, physical or mental, voluntary, trying to deepen profoundly in ourselves, rather than seeking expansion" demonstrates how astrological guidance provides practical strategies for working with rather than against cosmic influences. The warning that seeking "much contact with others in this period" will bring "contrarieties" offers specific behavioral guidance that could prevent unnecessary conflicts.
**The Internal Joy Antidote**: The prescription to "react with all the energy that internal joy gives and not close our eyes to the beauty that surrounds us" provides spiritual practice for neutralizing negative planetary influences through conscious cultivation of positive mental states. This demonstrates how astrology serves spiritual development rather than merely predicting inevitable events.
This demonstrates how astrology serves spiritual development rather than merely predicting inevitable events.
**The Jupiter Opportunity Recognition**: The identification of Jupiter influences as providing "the most benefic" vibration enabling "the greatest realizations" including "rejuvenation of the physical" and "support of superiors and chiefs" demonstrates how astrological timing can optimize practical endeavors. During wartime, when opportunities may be rare and must be seized decisively, such timing guidance proves invaluable.
**The Three-Law Understanding**: The teaching that actions should accord with "Law" understood in "three senses: natural, civil and spiritual" provides complete ethical framework that integrates astrological guidance with practical and moral considerations. During periods when legal and moral systems may conflict or prove inadequate, understanding the hierarchy of natural, human, and spiritual laws becomes essential for ethical decision-making.
**The Conscious Receiving-Transmitting Goal**: The ultimate aim to become "good receivers and also emitters, receiving harmonized waves from the Firmament and radiating around us vibrations of HEALTH, JOY AND WISDOM" demonstrates how astrological practice serves not merely personal benefit but collective spiritual service. During wartime, when individual consciousness contributes to collective mental atmosphere, understanding how to receive and radiate beneficial influences becomes essential for social healing.

## Deep Dreams
### Poetry of the Solitary Soul and Spiritual Yearning
**By Vicente Parreta**
Hollow logs of my feelings,
Field scent of wild thoughts,
Timbales of trunks with mushrooms of dream,
Naked hair, oboe sound of living solitude.
Rustic bodies of trees ¡giants! ¡shadows!
Broken hopes, with green branches that filter disappointments,
Instruments of human fiber that covers the genius of the quixote,
The natural soul bends, with sensual contours, ignoring the spirit, in
past remembrances.

## THE FOUNTAINS
### A Hymn to Divine Sources of Refreshment
**By Marta A.M.**
Blessed be God, who placed
the fountains in the path of the thirsty!
The fountains that, without noise, offer themselves
and in silence refresh.
The fountains that, generous, seek
the mouth of the pitcher
that they must fill
with the goodness of their waters,
¡and overflow it, in a kiss
of peace and health.
The fountains that spill
in rainbows of soft joys,
that transform into lights,
The fountains that, generous, seek
the mouth of the pitcher
that they must fill
with the goodness of their waters,
¡and overflow it, in a kiss
of peace and health.
The fountains that spill
in rainbows of soft joys,
that transform into lights,
of divine consolations,
and that are mothers,
¡because in giving their waters,
they give life!

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF WARTIME POETRY FOR SPIRITUAL SUSTENANCE
These two contemplative poems appear in July 1942 during humanity's darkest hour, providing essential spiritual nourishment when material circumstances offer little reason for hope or beauty. The poetic expressions demonstrate how creative contemplation serves psychological and spiritual survival during periods when analytical thinking proves inadequate for processing overwhelming circumstances.
## ANALYSIS OF "DEEP DREAMS" BY VICENTE PARRETA
**The Natural Metaphor System**: The opening imagery of "hollow logs of my feelings" and "field scent of wild thoughts" establishes connection between inner psychological states and natural processes. The recognition of feelings as "hollow logs" suggests both the emptiness and potential utility of emotional experiences—logs can be transformed into musical instruments or vessels, indicating how apparent emotional emptiness can serve creative purposes.
**The Musical Forest Vision**: The progression from "timbales of trunks with mushrooms of dream" to "oboe sound of living solitude" creates synesthetic experience where natural forms produce musical expressions. This demonstrates how solitary contemplation can transform apparent isolation into artistic creation, essential understanding for maintaining creative vitality during periods of enforced separation from normal community support.
**The Giant Trees as Symbols**: The exclamation "Rustic bodies of trees ¡giants! ¡shadows!" captures both the majesty and transience of natural forms. The recognition of trees as simultaneously substantial ("bodies") and ephemeral ("shadows") provides understanding that all material manifestation partakes of both permanence and impermanence, preventing both materialistic attachment and nihilistic despair.
**The Broken Hope Transformation**: The image of "broken hopes, with green branches that filter disappointments" demonstrates how apparent spiritual failures can continue to serve life processes. The "green branches" suggest that even damaged hopes retain vital energy that can process and transform negative experiences, preventing the psychological devastation that results from interpreting setbacks as final defeats.
The "green branches" suggest that even damaged hopes retain vital energy that can process and transform negative experiences, preventing the psychological devastation that results from interpreting setbacks as final defeats.
**The Quixote Reference**: The mention of "instruments of human fiber that covers the genius of the quixote" evokes Don Quixote's combination of practical failure with spiritual nobility. During wartime, when idealistic visions often prove inadequate for harsh realities, understanding how spiritual aspiration maintains value despite material ineffectiveness becomes essential for preserving motivation for continued service.
**The Sensual-Spiritual Tension**: The concluding image of "the natural soul bends, with sensual contours, ignoring the spirit, in past remembrances" captures the psychological challenge of balancing material incarnation with spiritual aspiration. The recognition that soul naturally bends toward sensual rather than spiritual orientation without conscious effort explains why spiritual development requires intentional rather than automatic progression.
## ANALYSIS OF "THE FOUNTAINS" BY MARTA A.M.
**The Divine Providence Recognition**: The opening blessing "Blessed be God, who placed the fountains in the path of the thirsty!" establishes gratitude as the fundamental spiritual attitude toward life's provisions. During wartime, when scarcity and suffering dominate awareness, conscious recognition of continuing divine provision becomes essential for maintaining psychological and spiritual health.
**The Silent Service**: The description of fountains that "without noise, offer themselves and in silence refresh" provides model for authentic spiritual service that operates through being rather than doing. The emphasis on silence suggests that the most effective assistance often occurs without fanfare or self-advertisement, essential understanding for spiritual workers during periods when publicity may be dangerous or counterproductive.
**The Generous Seeking**: The image of fountains that "generous, seek the mouth of the pitcher that they must fill" demonstrates how authentic spiritual sources actively pursue opportunities to serve rather than waiting passively for requests. The personification of fountains as seeking containers to fill suggests that spiritual assistance operates through natural affinity rather than arbitrary distribution.
**The Overflowing Blessing**: The phrase "overflow it, in a kiss of peace and health" captures the super-abundant nature of spiritual provision that gives more than requested or expected. The metaphor of "kiss" suggests intimate, personal attention rather than mere mechanical distribution, while "peace and health" identifies the essential spiritual gifts that transcend material limitations.
The metaphor of "kiss" suggests intimate, personal attention rather than mere mechanical distribution, while "peace and health" identifies the essential spiritual gifts that transcend material limitations.
**The Rainbow Transformation**: The progression from fountains that "spill in rainbows of soft joys" that "transform into lights of divine consolations" demonstrates how material provisions become vehicles for spiritual transmission. The rainbow imagery suggests that spiritual assistance manifests through beauty and diversity rather than uniform gray utility.
**The Maternal Principle**: The concluding recognition that fountains "are mothers, ¡because in giving their waters, they give life!" identifies the fundamental creative principle underlying all authentic spiritual service. The maternal metaphor suggests that spiritual assistance participates in the cosmic process of generation and nurturing rather than merely alleviating temporary difficulties.
## THE COMPLEMENTARY VISION
These two poems provide complementary perspectives essential for wartime spiritual navigation:
**Vicente Parreta's "Deep Dreams"** addresses the psychological challenge of maintaining creative vitality despite broken hopes and enforced solitude, showing how contemplative practice can transform apparent defeat into artistic achievement.
**Marta A.M.'s "The Fountains"** addresses the spiritual challenge of recognizing divine providence despite material scarcity and suffering, showing how gratitude can perceive continuous blessing even in adverse circumstances.
Together, they demonstrate how poetic contemplation serves both psychological processing of difficult experiences and spiritual recognition of continuing divine support—exactly the combination needed for conscious survival rather than mere endurance during humanity's most challenging periods.
### THE WARTIME SPIRITUAL NECESSITY
**Creative Processing**: Poetry provides methodology for transforming overwhelming experiences into manageable artistic expressions, preventing psychological fragmentation under extreme stress
**Beauty Recognition**: Poetic vision enables perception of beauty and meaning despite apparent ugliness and meaninglessness in external circumstances
**Emotional Integration**: Metaphorical language allows integration of complex emotional experiences that resist purely analytical processing
**Spiritual Perspective**: Poetic contemplation maintains awareness of transcendent dimensions that provide hope and direction when material circumstances offer neither
**Community Connection**: Shared poetic expression creates bonds between individuals who may be physically separated but remain spiritually united through common appreciation of beauty and meaning
**Cultural Continuity**: Maintaining poetic creation during crisis periods preserves cultural and spiritual values for post-war reconstruction rather than allowing complete barbarization
These poems demonstrate how creative contemplation provides essential spiritual resources for conscious navigation of catastrophic historical periods—serving individual psychological health while preserving collective cultural and spiritual values necessary for authentic rather than merely material reconstruction after crisis resolution.

## Notes on My Journey to Eastern Countries
### Obligatory Visit to the Temple of Madura (Conclusion)
**Architectural Marvels and Sacred Symbolism**
**By Maya, S.I.**
We arrived, finally, at the Temple properly speaking. How to translate the marvelousness of the splendid high reliefs that represent elephants, lions, monsters, goddesses, gods and a multitude of geniuses that are gesticulating, all carved directly in the great granite blocks that seem to fit miraculously worked by an artistic hand of woman?
Passing in front of the coffers that guard the enormous treasures of the Temple, and crowns in which are set enormous pearls, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, beryls and turquoises of the value of several million "rupias," we directed ourselves to the famous Hall of the Thousand Columns, but which, in reality, only has 997, whose sum 9 plus 9 plus 7 is 25, equal to 7, the mystical and magical number 7.
## THE ARCHITECTURAL REFINEMENT
What refinement in those works of art deposited there and that make of this Temple almost the unique of its kind in all the world, for the richness of its engravings and of its architecture! Cheerful rays of sun now penetrate the portico of the gallery called [translate:MINAKOHI-NAIK]. At nightfall, the Brahmins light there the small lamps with their wick submerged in oil, which, at night, will illuminate the entrance of the corridors and lend the Temple an aspect still more mysterious.
Under the arcades we saw boys and girls who sold flowers, fruits and ex-votos. Further on are seen vendors of pastries and sweets; in some corner, very crouched, some silent yogi in full meditation; further on, some kafir. From time to time, someone interrupts us with a: ¡[translate:Salam Sahib, Salam]! ¡Welcome, Sir!...
Others salute us with a "[translate:Bendangi]," Hindustani salutation. We continue looking at the beautiful sculptures that make us remember historical personages; we contemplate the statue of [translate:VISWANATHA-NAIK], he who helped the emperor [translate:VIJAYANACAR] to recover his throne, which had been usurped from him, in the year 1599, by a Chela King of Tanjoie during his invasion of Madura.
## THE STORY OF LOYAL BETRAYAL
## THE STORY OF LOYAL BETRAYAL
The king was furious over the betrayal of one of his generals, whom he suspected had been the cause of his defeat. He called all of them and said to them: How is it possible that among my valiant generals who have won hundreds of battles, there is not found one capable of bringing me, alive or dead, the traitor?
There was a profound silence, interrupted by a handsome courtier, son of the very general suspected of betrayal; who directed himself to the Emperor, saying: "Majesty, I will bring you the traitor even if he were my own father."
Really, the young general went to meet his father, defeated him in battle and brought him prisoner to the Court, where the emperor's grace was the reward for his loyalty. The young [translate:VISWANATHA-NAIK] was made governor of the kingdom of [translate:PANDYA]. To him are owed the laws and order that reigned there; justice was fulfilled; fortifications were made to protect the Holy City from invasions, and also everything possible to have the Brahmins as friends; sanctuaries were constructed and irrigation works were made that brought to that region enormous prosperity.
Then, we saw the effigy of the famous [translate:THIRUMALAHAIK], who became... (illegible)...immensely rich: he had a revenue of 20 million rupias annually, and assigned as annual revenue to the Temple of Madura the sum of 400,000 rupias, which permitted the realization of many works and the accumulation of riches. Being the king a great admirer of art, he protected the sculptors, and it is fame that he himself witnessed the works and accompanied the artists, offering them, by his own royal hands, betel leaves as a show of sympathy.
## THE QUEEN'S TRAGIC FATE
Further ahead, we saw the famous statue of [translate:MANGANAL], the queen who governed during fifteen years in the territory of Madura; her energy and her diplomatic firmness brought to the country immense prosperity; she had roads and temples constructed and to her are owed the beautiful highways still today in the districts of Madura and Tinnevelly.
She was very charitable and by the betrayal of a Brahmin whom she had protected, was led to an ambush and walled up alive. Sad end of many beings who have done good.
The sculptures of the Temple of Madura are marvelous and admirable for the position and sentiment expressed in the images, imprinted, not only in the faces, but in all the muscles of the body, giving the sensation of true vitality.
## THE DIVINE SONS AND SACRED SYMBOLISM
We could admire, on both doors of a temple, within the "Great Temple," an entrance that had engraved on its two leaves, the figures of the sons of [translate:SIVA] and of [translate:PARVATI]: [translate:GANAPATHI], with elephant head and [translate:SUBBAMANYA] with six heads and six arms, seated on a peacock, expressing all a profound esoteric symbolism.
[translate:GANAPATHI] is venerated in India as God of knowledge and is found at the entrances of almost all the temples and bridges of the roads.
The [translate:Puranas] relate that his relatives asked him to marry; Ganapathi answered that he would marry that woman who equaled in beauty, power and wisdom his own mother. But, who could equal the incomparable Parvati?
His relatives permitted him to search, and Ganapathi placed himself at the entrance of the temples so that thus no girl could pass unnoticed by him; but it is believed that he still has not found what he was seeking.
## THE DIVINE TEMPTATION STORIES
Further ahead we admired the beautiful figures of [translate:Siva], disguised as beggar, who, according to history, having desire to test the fidelity of the wives of certain sages of the forest of [translate:TARUKA], assumed the beautiful form of a [translate:BEIKAS-HATAMAR], beautiful nude young beggar. These ladies were proud of their chastity; but, according to the legend, Siva succeeded in seducing them all.
There is also the statue of [translate:MOHINI]; [translate:VISHNU] took that form to tempt the austere sages. It is magistrally represented in all its anatomical details and one can see in its face an expression of languor and complete surrender and voluptuous abandonment of its body.
If one thinks that these works of art were made only with the intervention of some few rudimentary instruments, of a sharp point with a primitive hammer, one will be able to appreciate then, in all its value, the genius of those artists.
## THE SYMBOL OF PERFECT CHASTITY
Opposite to the figure of Mohini, is the gracious figure of [translate:ANASUYA], the symbol of chastity. The history is the following: [translate:PARVATI], [translate:SARASVATI] AND [translate:LAKSMI] heard [translate:NARADA] say that [translate:ANASUYA] was the most chaste and pure woman of the universe and, jealous, communicated it to their respective husbands, who to test that chastity, disguised themselves as [translate:RISHIS] (Masters) and entered her house asking for food.
[translate:ANASUYA], being very devout and hospitable, let them enter and offered them rice, but they refused to eat, saying that they would do so only if she served them completely naked; it is easy to imagine the anxiety of that chaste maiden; but the very power of her serenity and chastity came to the aid of her virtue, permitting her to convert the three beggars into three children, to thus be able to fulfill her promise and serve them without any shame.
It is for this reason that one sees the statue of [translate:ANASUYA] covered with a [translate:SAREE] (Hindu tunic) that is sliding gently to the floor, and that shows her beautiful and artistic body semi-nude.
The entrances of the small sanctuaries are generally guarded by two [translate:DEWARAPALAKAS] (guardians who watch the visitors with serene and scrutinizing eyes). One can also see a quantity of divinities that are dancing.

## THE ENCYCLOPEDIC TEMPLE
For all this, truly, the temple of Madura presents itself like an encyclopedia of the diverse religions, realized in wood, marble and granite.
Near those guardians can be seen some frescoes that relate the persecution of the [translate:Jainas] by Hinduism, these canvases still today recalling strong hatreds.
In a place near there is found the famous [translate:SANIAM-TAMUL]. This was a body of 58 sages, something like the Academy of Sciences in our days.
Walking through another corridor in front of a series of sixty-three saints of southern India, known as [translate:NAHAYARS], calls attention the fact that, among the 63 images, is found that of a woman called [translate:KARAIKAL-AMMAIYAR], who arrived at great sanctity; one can see, by the ascetic features of her face, the elevation of her being.
## THE SACRED VEHICLES AND LINGAM SYMBOLISM
There also are found several instruments and carriages that are carried in procession on days of religious festivities; among them stands out the gigantic "Sacred Chariot," on which the divinities are placed.
Then, our attention is solicited by [translate:SUNDARES-WAR], the Holy of Holies, which is represented in form of lingam (phallus or generating symbol). [translate:SIVA], represented as [translate:SUNDARES-WAR], is one of the three principal gods of Hindustani Cosmogony, the other two being [translate:BRAHMA] and [translate:VISHNU].
[translate:Brahma], the Creator, [translate:Vishnu] the Preserver and [translate:Siva] the destroyer.
Some foreigners ask themselves why they represent this god of destruction in form of lingam. The answer is that, according to Hindu beliefs, destruction implies reproduction. [translate:Siva] not only destroys the heavens and earth at the end of a world cycle, but also the bond that ties the body to each soul.
New worlds must be created and formed by the process of transformation, reincarnation and evolution. In this sense, [translate:Siva] is looked upon then as creator, because he is responsible for the restoration of that which has been dissolved, and from there comes the representation in form of lingam.
## THE DIVINE HERMAPHRODITE
Now we remain admired before the most beautiful figure, in artistic concept, engraved in granite, that can be found in that temple. It is a pillar showing [translate:Siva] and [translate:Parvati] on the mountain of [translate:CAILAS]. One can see the gigantic figure of [translate:RAVANA] with 60 heads and 20 hands doing penance, with the mountain [translate:CAILAS] on his many shoulders, as punishment for having wanted to steal that sacred mountain to adorn his capital.
One can see the gigantic figure of [translate:RAVANA] with 60 heads and 20 hands doing penance, with the mountain [translate:CAILAS] on his many shoulders, as punishment for having wanted to steal that sacred mountain to adorn his capital.
Near there is found another pillar representing [translate:Siva] in form of [translate:ARDHANARI] (the hermaphrodite). This form was the result of the devotion of [translate:SAKTI], that is, the doctrine that affirms that a God is capable of functioning only when combined with his feminine element. This is a great esoteric symbol that encloses a mysterious significance, principal esoteric key of [translate:YOGA].
[translate:Siva] is represented there by a masculine earring, in the right lobe of his ear and the feminine ornament in the left lobe, indicating the inseparable union of masculine and feminine elements in the Creator.
Half of the image represents [translate:Siva] and the other half his wife [translate:Parvati]; this image is marvelous for the perfect equilibrium achieved by the sculptor between the masculine and feminine aspect.
## THE DIVINE ARTS AND SCIENCES
At the other extreme is found the figure of [translate:Siva], represented as Master of [translate:Yoga], of Music and other sciences. Also one can see that of [translate:Sarasvati], goddess of Knowledge, with an admirable lute, because one can see distinctly its strings made of granite, and the fingers of the goddess with sharp nails, without which it would be impossible for her to play that delicate instrument.

### THE DEEPER SIGNIFICANCE OF SACRED ARCHITECTURE FOR WARTIME SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING
This extraordinary detailed account of Madura Temple appears in July 1942 when humanity desperately needs evidence that authentic spiritual civilization can create lasting beauty despite temporal conflicts and destruction. The systematic documentation demonstrates how sacred architecture preserves spiritual wisdom in material form that transcends the limitations of written texts or oral transmission.
**The Artistic Perfection Mystery**: The account of "splendid high reliefs" carved "directly in the great granite blocks that seem to fit miraculously worked by an artistic hand of woman" demonstrates how authentic spiritual inspiration can manifest through material craftsmanship that appears to transcend normal human capability. During wartime, when human destructive capacity reaches unprecedented levels, witnessing evidence of equally extraordinary human creative capacity provides essential hope for the species.
During wartime, when human destructive capacity reaches unprecedented levels, witnessing evidence of equally extraordinary human creative capacity provides essential hope for the species.
**The Numerical Mysticism**: The "Hall of the Thousand Columns" actually containing 997 columns (9+9+7=25=7) demonstrates how sacred architecture embodies mathematical relationships rather than merely serving practical functions. The reduction to the "mystical and magical number 7" shows how traditional builders encoded spiritual principles in structural elements, creating buildings that serve both physical and metaphysical purposes.
**The Treasury Integration**: The description of "enormous treasures" including "pearls, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, beryls and turquoises of the value of several million rupias" demonstrates how authentic spiritual institutions integrate rather than reject material wealth. During wartime, when spiritual and material concerns often appear to conflict, understanding how sacred wealth serves rather than corrupts spiritual purposes becomes essential for post-war reconstruction.
**The Living Temple Community**: The vivid account of daily temple life—boys and girls selling "flowers, fruits and ex-votos," vendors of "pastries and sweets," "silent yogi in full meditation," various greetings in different languages—demonstrates how authentic sacred spaces foster rather than inhibit normal human activities. This integration prevents the artificial separation between sacred and secular life that weakens both spiritual practice and practical effectiveness.
**The Historical Preservation**: The detailed stories of [translate:VISWANATHA-NAIK], [translate:THIRUMALAHAIK], and Queen [translate:MANGANAL] demonstrate how sacred architecture preserves historical memory through artistic representation. The tragic story of the charitable queen "walled up alive" by betrayal provides understanding that spiritual nobility does not guarantee material protection, while her lasting commemoration shows how authentic virtue achieves permanent rather than temporary recognition.
**The Artistic Vitality**: The observation that sculptures are "admirable for the position and sentiment expressed in the images, imprinted, not only in the faces, but in all the muscles of the body, giving the sensation of true vitality" demonstrates how authentic spiritual art transcends mere decorative function to become vehicles for living spiritual presence. During periods when spiritual reality becomes difficult to perceive directly, artistic representations can serve as windows into transcendent dimensions.
During periods when spiritual reality becomes difficult to perceive directly, artistic representations can serve as windows into transcendent dimensions.
**The Ganapathi Symbolism**: The story of [translate:GANAPATHI] seeking a bride equal to his mother [translate:Parvati] in "beauty, power and wisdom" but remaining at temple entrances because "he still has not found what he was seeking" provides understanding of the psychological principle that authentic spiritual development requires integration of opposing forces rather than settlement for incomplete relationships. The elephant-headed god's eternal searching represents the soul's refusal to accept anything less than divine union.
**The Divine Temptation Teaching**: The accounts of [translate:Siva] as beggar successfully seducing the proud wives of forest sages, and [translate:Vishnu] as [translate:MOHINI] tempting austere ascetics, demonstrate how authentic spiritual tradition acknowledges rather than denies the power of sexual attraction. These stories provide understanding that spiritual development must integrate rather than simply suppress natural forces, preventing the psychological splitting that weakens both spiritual aspiration and human effectiveness.
**The Perfect Chastity Example**: The counter-story of [translate:ANASUYA] who transformed three divine tempters into children through "the very power of her serenity and chastity" demonstrates how authentic spiritual virtue operates through transformation rather than resistance. Her ability to fulfill her hospitality obligation while maintaining her integrity provides model for navigating situations where spiritual and practical duties appear to conflict.
**The Encyclopedic Integration**: The recognition that "the temple of Madura presents itself like an encyclopedia of the diverse religions, realized in wood, marble and granite" demonstrates how authentic spiritual centers synthesize rather than exclude different approaches to truth. During wartime, when religious and cultural differences often become militarized, understanding how genuine spiritual wisdom incorporates rather than opposes diversity becomes essential for post-war reconciliation.
**The Sectarian Conflict Acknowledgment**: The mention of frescoes depicting "the persecution of the [translate:Jainas] by Hinduism" that "still today recall strong hatreds" demonstrates honest acknowledgment that even authentic spiritual traditions participate in religious conflicts. This prevents idealization of any particular tradition while maintaining recognition that spiritual principles transcend their historical implementations.
This prevents idealization of any particular tradition while maintaining recognition that spiritual principles transcend their historical implementations.
**The Academy Parallel**: The reference to [translate:SANIAM-TAMUL] as "a body of 58 sages, something like the Academy of Sciences in our days" demonstrates how spiritual and intellectual institutions serve parallel functions in preserving and transmitting knowledge. During periods when academic institutions may become corrupted or destroyed, understanding how spiritual institutions can preserve intellectual as well as contemplative traditions becomes crucial for cultural continuity.
**The Feminine Sanctity Recognition**: The inclusion of [translate:KARAIKAL-AMMAIYAR] among the sixty-three saints, showing how "one can see, by the ascetic features of her face, the elevation of her being," demonstrates how authentic spiritual tradition recognizes rather than excludes feminine spiritual achievement. During wartime, when women often bear disproportionate suffering while maintaining family and community structures, recognition of feminine spiritual capacity provides essential validation.
**The Lingam Understanding**: The sophisticated explanation of [translate:Siva] as destroyer-creator through lingam symbolism—"destruction implies reproduction" and creates "new worlds...by the process of transformation, reincarnation and evolution"—provides understanding that apparent destruction can serve rather than oppose evolutionary purposes. During wartime, when massive destruction appears purely negative, understanding its potential creative function enables hope for eventual positive transformation.
**The Hermaphrodite Integration**: The detailed description of [translate:ARDHANARI] with "masculine earring in the right lobe...and feminine ornament in the left lobe, indicating the inseparable union of masculine and feminine elements in the Creator" demonstrates how authentic spiritual realization requires integration rather than dominance of either masculine or feminine principles. This provides essential understanding for post-war reconstruction that serves both genders rather than merely restoring male-dominated structures.
**The Divine Arts Teaching**: The culminating image of [translate:Siva] as "Master of Yoga, of Music and other sciences" alongside [translate:Sarasvati] with her granite lute strings demonstrates how spiritual mastery encompasses rather than excludes artistic and intellectual achievement. During periods when spiritual and cultural concerns appear to compete for limited resources, understanding their essential unity becomes crucial for maintaining civilization rather than merely surviving catastrophe.
