p. 44 RAMAKRISHNA (Read at session No. 270, of 15 February, of Papus Centre No. 5) I dedicate this work to my Initiator, desiring that the breeze of love of the divine Master may help him guide all the boats of his disciples to the waters of the ocean of Divine Love.
By Amapadaka, S. I.
The Lipikas or Lords of Karma had seen that a new manifestation of God on Earth was necessary, and that the Ego which in different epochs had taken the bodies of Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Christ and Chaitanya was ready to sacrifice itself once more for the benefit of Humanity; again it desired to save her from her miseries; it desired to let fall a beneficent dew of divine Love upon the withered heart of men, to decipher for them the enigma of the Universe and to infuse into them the devotional spirit.
They found that in Bengal there was a picturesque village named Kamarpukur, whose conical dwellings were surrounded by palm trees, ponds and rice fields, in which there lived a holy and kindly woman named Chandramani, who was the only one in a condition to shelter in her bosom the Divine Ego.
Therefore, like all the virgins who have given birth to the divine Avatars, Chandramani was transported, in one of her dreams, to the arms of God, while her husband Kundiram, who had gone on pilgrimage to the holy land of Gaya, was visited by the Great Saviour, who said to him: “I am born again to save Humanity”.
And it is now l10 years [Sic: the Spanish prints “l10”, with a letter ell before the digits] since Chandramani gave birth to that instrument or means of manifestation of the Word or Divine Speech, whose teachings were to flow from his pure and ingenuous lips as if they issued from the mouth of a wise and at the same time simple child, who lives lulled by the affection of his tender mother and filled to overflowing with sweetness, compassion and happiness.
That incarnation of tenderness and Divine Love was to keep its mind continually fixed upon the Supreme. And as the child needs to see its mother, to embrace her, to smile at her, he too will need to see, to embrace, to feel the caresses of his Divine Mother, of the Divine Mother of all the creatures of the Universe, who manifests herself in this world under different aspects and forms: At times as Mahakali, or Absolute Deity, arupic, or formless.
At others, as Nityakali, or permanent Deity, distinct from her works. At others, as Samasamkali, or sombre Deity, who presides over death. At others, as Rakshyakali, or Mother of dark blue colour, pleasing to the eyes of the devotees, who blesses and protects her children.
And he adopted the name of Ramakrishna, which was a fusion of Rama and of Krishna. Of Rama, “the inspired one of peace”, he who gave to man the torch, sacred symbol of the divine Spirit, and to woman the cup, symbol of Life and of Love, and who, inspired and guided by Deva Nahusha, the Divine Intelligence, was the bearer of its rays: he who ins-
p. 55 tituted the cult of the sacred fire to implant happiness among men, abolished human sacrifices. In every home he united husband and wife in one same prayer, and united the families, the clans, the tribes and all the peoples. Rama raised woman before man in her divine functions of wife and mother.
He made her the priestess of her home, the guardian of the sacred fire. And of Krishna, “the Radiant”, who in ancient and millennial India reconciled the solar and lunar cults. The solar, which gave the God of the Universe the masculine sex, which had instituted the science of the sacred fire and of prayer, respect for woman, the cult of the ancestors.
The lunar cult, on the other hand, attributed to the Divinity the feminine sex, adored blind, unconscious nature [Sic: the Spanish prints “natura1eza”, with a numeral] in her violent and terrible manifestations, leaned toward idolatry and black magic, favoured polygamy and tyranny supported on the popular passions. Krishna reconciled the two cults and exalted the feminine face of the Divinity.
That Avatar will teach, in this new sojourn among men, to adore that passive principle from which all the things of the Universe have emanated, which after each pralaya becomes the receiver of the Fohatic impression of the Divine Thought and opens its heart to receive the Single Ray and make the Kosmos arise in limitless Space.
He will teach them to open the heart to the flow of the Divine Energy, to understand the language of the Divine Mother and to recognise that the Absolute and the Divine Mother are One.
That is why he who, having the comprehension that God, the sole Reality, the Eternal Essence, is One and Indivisible and, on being adored, receives different names according to the epoch, the place, the race and nationality of his adorers, will feel the need to adore him in his feminine aspect, which will be the one most in harmony with his soul, nourished on divine mercy, with the ideal of feminine tenderness and with infinite compassion.
Therefore he will adore the Divine Mother Kali, and his favourite prayer will be: Oh, Mother! To your mercy I surrender myself. May the lotus of your feet keep your child from whatever would draw him away from you.
Oh, most loving Mother! I crave no fame, nor do the pleasures of the senses seduce me. Neither do I desire psychic and thaumaturgic powers.
I want and implore pure love for you, without stain of desires [Sic: the Spanish prints “si mácula” for “sin mácula”], love that does not attach itself to the things of this world, that springs spontaneously from the immortal soul. Grant me, oh Mother!, that I may not forget you, seduced by the enchantments of illusion, nor allow me to be entangled in the meshes of samsara. I have no one in the world but you.
I do not know how to sing your name worthily and with deep devotion. I lack the knowledge that leads to you. I lack genuine devotion.
Oh! Grant me that I may love your infinite mercy! If we reflect that this is the prayer pronounced by Him who had come to attain the ecstasy that made him live continually in spiritual communion with God, that it was
p. 66 the prayer of Him who had come to discover that in the temple of his heart dwelt the Eternal Truth, we shall doubtless be able to find in it the best lesson on the road that we must follow, we who truly desire to reach the Truth and to live with the mind fixed on the Eternal and Imperishable. The holy and blessed Master was: Tenuous as a sigh, tender as a flower, pure as a child is; but potent in his ascension.
He penetrated into the seven worlds, deciphered the enigma of creation, passed beyond the limits of the finite and was reintegrated into the Eternal Self. He poured out love in fresh dew upon the hearts withered by illusion. He watered the lands scorched by the burning heat of passion.
He refreshed the parched mouths, thirsty for the water of divine Love. He made the sleeping lotuses flower in the disciples avid for ascension. He made all the cold of heart love the Divine Mother.
And he softened the heart of all those indifferent before sorrow. The divine Ramakrishna had never read a book written by human hands. He read in the book of the Kosmos, written by the hand of the Omniscient.
That is why his teachings are steeped in simplicity and grandeur at once. His beloved disciples could hear him, on coming out of his ecstasies, which on some occasions lasted as long as six months: “God is All and I his part. He is Lord and I servant; but He is I and I am He, because we are of the same essence, for in God we live and move and have our being”.
He taught them that all religions and all sects are paths that lead to God, that all religions are paths or roads, but the paths are not God. That God is personal and impersonal, that he has form and lacks it, that he is present in all things animate and inanimate; therefore everything is worthy of respect.
p. 77 That the subtlest obstacle interposed on the path leading to the vision of God is the sensation of personality, because the personal self is a cloud that hides the Truth. When personality vanishes, it makes all disquiet cease, and the intimate union of God and the soul is restored. It is the sensation of personality that enslaves us to lust and to material riches and makes us believe that our soul is different from God.
But sincere and profound devotion engenders the intense love of God that annuls worldly desires, draws from the mind the mire of profane thoughts, washes its impurities and cleanses the heart of the devotee, who, once he has cast off the imperfections of his soul, can obtain the vision of God. Then the true man flowers and can verify that God resides in individuality.
To that state can come all who love, adore and feel profound devotion to God, whether they conceive him with form or without form. Adoration, discernment and meditation are needed to attain union with Him; but pride, hatred and fear must be cast off to free oneself from the slavery of personality.
He would also teach that whoever does good, for love of the good and out of sympathy with the one benefited, without appetite for the fruit of the action, is united with God. Though no one can define him, because whatever the mouth might express would be contaminated, like water infected by corrupt slime.
All the Sacred Scriptures have in themselves the soil of the human word; but the Absolute Brahman is clean, because no mouth has succeeded in defining him, because Brahman transcends the finite human mind. Three are the paths that lead to the recognition of the Absolute Brahman: that of Wisdom, that of Devotion and that of Action.
The three lead equally to union with God; but while the feeling of personality endures, the path of devotion is preferable. Without divine aid it is extremely difficult for the limited faculties of man to attain spiritual perfection. Man by himself alone cannot benefit humanity.
He who benefits humanity is an instrument of God. He taught them to repeat the Holy Name of the Lord, to sing his praises and, with fervent and sincere heart, to implore him, saying: Oh, Lord!, grant me Your divine Wisdom, Your divine Love. Open my eyes and make me know you!
As he taught the love of God, Ramakrishna went on purifying sinners, taking their sins upon himself and suffering for them. For that reason, his body fell ill. He would say to his disciples, who suffered to see him ill: “I am the infinite Spirit clothed in human form, having a wound near the throat”. “Sickness and pain are in the body; but the Spirit transcends sickness and pain”.
p. 88 “My illness serves as convincing proof of the absolute dominion of Spirit over matter in this epoch of materialism and scepticism”. “My Divine Mother has placed this illness in my body to demonstrate to the sceptics that the true being of man is of divine nature, that the consciousness of God is today as certain and real as it was in Vedic times, and that when man attains perfection all limitations vanish”.
He had verified that the God who was in him was not satisfied with his personal salvation, that he demanded of him love and service toward his fellows. Therefore he grasped with firmness the helm of all those boats and brought them to the shore of God. He desired to make each one of those men capable of transmitting and teaching to the world the word of Truth.
He urged them to raise up, in the midst of Humanity, a mountain of God, from which rivers of light and of compassion would pour out upon all men and for all times. He impelled them to open themselves to themselves and to others, so that together they might reconstitute the omnipotent Unity.
For that it was necessary that they give themselves entirely, that they “create anew”, by the common effort, the Being that would nourish the men and women of the centuries to come. The task was arduous. He needed to choose a spirit of powerful wings joined to a vigorous body, with strong arms to move the earth and powerful legs to traverse it.
His body could no longer be the receptacle of his soul and his spirit. The moment had come to choose his spiritual heir, who would sow through the world the seed of his thought. His eyes come to rest on that rebellious adolescent, his ornamented disciple Narendra, who debated everything, and of whom Ramakrishna will say to his disciples: “See, see what power of penetration… he is a roaring blaze that consumes all impurities...
And Vivekananda was his successor. Ramakrishna transferred to him all the powers and said to him: “With this influence you will do an immense good to the world”. And so it was.
And the divine Master entered into ecstasy pronouncing three times in succession the name of the Divine Mother Kali, who took him in her arms for ever. ON MA NI PADME HUM
p. 99 KABBALISTIC THEORY OF MUSIC (Continuation and end) By Rouxel CHAPTER VII — Origin of the minor scale The proportions we have seen, and the chords that are their expression, are not the only ones that can be obtained. These chords reduce to the perfect major chord and its inversions, to the continuous proportions: 3, 4, 5 — 4. 5.
6 — 5. 6. 8.
From the single relation 4. 5. 6, obtained by the division of the fifth, we can also obtain a discontinuous proportion by inverting the terms: 5.
6 : 4. 5, in which the sum of the extremes, 5+5, equals that of the means, 6+4. The minor third comes in first place; thus is obtained the perfect minor chord: do flat-mi sol, or, to avoid accidentals, la do mi.
This chord, like the perfect major chord, is susceptible of two inversions: 1st do mi la [Sic: the Spanish prints “do ml la”], 2nd mi la do, giving the following proportions: do mi la mi la do 4. 5 : 3. 4 3.
4 : 4. 5 in which, as is required, the sum of the extremes is equal to that of the means. The proportion of the direct minor chord is inverse: the relation 5.
6 is placed before the relation 4. 5, the minor third before the major third. The proportion of the first inversion is in the same case, but the numerical relations are simpler.
In the second inversion, the proportion is direct and continuous. It is because the proportions here are more complex that the minor chords are less sonorous than the major chords. It is also for that reason that they are more savoury (to return to Descartes’ comparison) and that they lend themselves, better than the major chords, to the expression of exaggerated feelings, in force as in sweetness.
It is again for the same reason of simple proportions that the second inversion mi la do is more sonorous than its two congeners, as can be verified by audition. The law of succession is the same for the minor chord as for the major chord, and the reasons are also the same. One will have, then, to link with the chord la do mi, the chords of the upper fifth and of the lower fifth of the fundamental la, which will give us the seventh:
p. 1010 And, placing the notes of these three chords in order of pitch, the minor scale will be obtained: In which the tonic and the dominant are doubled, as in the major.
The chords of the dominant and of the sub-dominant are, as is known, minor; but, so that the cadence may be better accentuated, the sol of the dominant chord is marked with a sharp; one then obtains mi sol-sharp si [Sic: the Spanish prints “mi sostenido sol si”, transposing the sharp]. But the sub-dominant chord is not altered, because the mode would come too close to the major mode; we should obtain a lesser source of variety.
With the major dominant chord, the minor scale becomes as follows: One sees that, by these indirect means — by the linking of the chords — we have obtained relations different from those that derived from the insertion of arithmetical means, and that it was at the least useless to extract the relations: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc. These two sevenths of sounds — major mode and minor mode — are the only ones employed in modern music, and they are an inexhaustible source of variety through the diverse combinations that can arise from them, which are the object of the science of harmony, of which we have here established only the fundamental principles.
CHAPTER VIII — Conclusion “Numbers govern the world”. “There is geometry everywhere”. Nothing is truer, above all in music.
We have seen that the whole secret of musical science resides in Number, that everything in music proceeds from the One and returns to it. The musical sound contains in itself, in a latent state (in potency, as the peripatetics say), all the other sounds that issue from it (as from a seed issue the stalk, the branches, the leaves, the flowers) by division or differentiation.
Kant has said that mathematics forms, so to speak, a bridge between metaphysics and physics. Music being mathematical, the audible world consequently forms a bridge between the visible world and the invisible. Let us try, then, to cross that bridge, to see a little of what there is on the other shore.
Without claiming to explore the whole field of metaphysics, let us take a few steps on its frontiers. It is known that there existed, in the remotest antiquity, a great Science which was founded upon the Kabbalah, that is, upon Numbers, and which united, under that same law of Number, all the particular sciences in one universal Synthesis. This synthetic Science has
p. 1111 been lost in great part, but there remain of it some remnants scattered in the traditions and even in the modern sciences. These residues of the High Science are mixed with much dross; they have been covered by numerous layers of alluvium.
It seems, however, that one can extract from them, if not nuggets, at least a few straws of gold that show the analogies existing between the fundamental principles of all the sciences and that bind them to one another. To give an example, I shall try to indicate the analogies manifested between the principles of music and those of theology.
The laws of music, such as we have just deduced them from the unitary principle, are found again in theology, above all in Christian theology, in the two principal documents that constitute the base of its dogmas: the Credo and the “In principio” of the Gospel of Saint John. According to all theogonies and theologies, God is at once one and three.
It is the mystery of the Trinity, of the Trimurti, etc. I think the theologians are right on this point, and I add that all that is below (music, for example, to cite only one), is also trinitarian, like what is above. To demonstrate this assertion it suffices to compare the principles of music with the dogmas of Christian theology — dogmas that proceed, in their essential part, from the ancient Science.
Music The One (the sound) is the father of all sounds. It contains them all in itself in a latent state. But, alone, it can produce nothing, exteriorise nothing.
For the one to produce, it must become two. Thus, there is no simple sound. The least musical sound is composed of at least two: the fundamental sound (the father) and its octave (the two), its harmonic (the son).
From the one and the two, by differentiation, by insertion between them of arithmetical means (differentials), proceeds the three. And from the three, by the same operation, all the other sounds and chords are born. Theology.
Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem. factorem coeli et térrea, visibilium et invislbilium. [Editorial gloss: the Latin is transmitted as printed, accents and slips included.] (As the octave (the two), daughter of the one and its image, was born with the fundamental sound). Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine. (The octave is the same sound as the fundamental.
It is the light of the light; the sound is the luminous source; the octave, the light exteriorised. It is what gives the sound its brilliance, its light, its sonority, its timbre). [The octave is consubstantial with the unison; it has the same hypertones.
It is engendered, and not made, not brought in from outside indirectly. And from these two factors, by arithmetical division, proceed all the other sounds; by these two sounds all music is made.]
[The three (the fifth) is not consubstantial with the one and the two; it is not engendered; it proceeds from the one and from the two. But it is vivified and vivifying (et vivificantem), and it is the one which, afterwards, engenders all the other sounds, as from the Spirit are born all visible beings.
“The three,” Chateaubriand has said, “is a fraction that is not engendered and that engenders all the other fractions”.] The Gospel of Saint John is no less explicit. In the Beginning (the father, the one) was the Word (the son, the two), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the same way, in the fundamental sound is the octave, in the one is the two, and the octave (the son) is in the sound (the father), and the octave is the same sound. And all this from the beginning, in principio, ab initio et ante saecula. Omnia per ipsum facta sunt.
All is made by the two, the Word, the octave. Beginning with the three, the fifth, the Spirit, which is made and not engendered, and which, afterwards, engenders everything, for in ipso vita est. And the life (the Spirit) is the light of man, and this light shines in the darkness (in the body), and the darkness (the body) comprehends it not.
Et (Filius) incarnatus est. Et Verbum caro factum est. Et habitavit in nobis.
In music the relation 1.2, the octave, the unit of measure of all sounds, dwells in us and permits us to measure, to contemplate the harmony of sounds, to enjoy that harmony. Et homo factus est. And music, which is of physical origin, becomes human and, consequently, metaphysical. There is metaphysics in everything; it is indeed the essence of everything.
p. 1313 PRACTICAL COURSE OF JUDICIAL ASTROLOGY (Continuation) Teachings of Surya S. I.
THE INFLUENCE OF THE PLANETS IN EACH HOUSE Having already studied the influences of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon and Uranus, we shall today do the same with those of: NEPTUNE (The planet of Divinity) NEPTUNE IN THE FIRST HOUSE gives a sensitive body capable of feeling the subtlest vibrations of nature, and these vibrations will be good or bad according to the aspects it receives.
If Neptune is strong and well aspected by the Sun, Jupiter or Uranus, it gives a mystical and latent nature which, if not developed, can become so. In whatever manner it is disposed, the nature is visionary, romantic and without practical worth. When it is not well aspected it makes the person effeminate, dissolute and neurasthenic, causing general debility.
If it is afflicted, the nature is indolent, morose and mutable, with perverted tastes that will make it commit indiscreet acts of grave consequences, there being some prostitution of the spiritual faculties, a dishonest and deceiving disposition and a tendency to mediumship and to obsession by the spirit.
NEPTUNE IN THE SECOND HOUSE, well aspected, gives gains in all things in which water takes an important part, as well as through partnerships and mystical and occult matters. If it is afflicted it is bad for health and for financial affairs, which will always be chaotic and undefined. NEPTUNE IN THE THIRD HOUSE gives a tendency to travel much, especially by water — journeys that will be favourable or adverse according to the aspects it receives.
Well aspected, it gives capacity for writing on elevated subjects of inspiration, giving a devotional mind. If it is afflicted, the mind is low, cunning and at times foolish, with fantastic and involuntary feelings and with perverted appetites, occasioning accidents on journeys and quarrels with relatives.
NEPTUNE IN THE FOURTH HOUSE, well aspected, gives a spiritual atmosphere to the home with good conditions for the development of the soul, and indicates a natural death. Badly disposed, it is unfavourable to the father’s fortune, to the family property and to health.
It brings deceptions, frauds, misfortunes, betrayals, many changes of residence and a predisposition to find oneself in the greatest poverty at the end of life, as well as to exile, confinement and death abroad.
NEPTUNE IN THE FIFTH HOUSE, well aspected, gives success as a teacher of mystical subjects and gains in investments in things ruled by Neptune: aquatic sports and any other business in which the element “water” is dominant, indicating favourable relations with highly spiritual beings.
If it is badly disposed it gives extravagance in spending, losses of money, inclination to frequent bad places, dissolute habits, weak children if married, and unhappy loves if single. NEPTUNE IN THE SIXTH HOUSE, well aspected, inclines to the study of medicine and marks latent psychic faculties that can be favourably developed.
p. 1414 Badly aspected, it predisposes to mediumship and obsession, to vexations and losses through employees, to chronic and deforming illnesses, to affections of the urinary tract, stomach, liver and intestines, giving a sensual nature and a manner of living of self-indulgence. In a feminine horoscope it occasions diseases of the uterus, fibromas, cancer, hysteria and neurasthenia.
NEPTUNE IN THE SEVENTH HOUSE, very well disposed, indicates a spiritual marriage, a rather platonic union of a character very agreeable to the soul, a union of two persons who really complement each other. If it is not well disposed it causes separation or divorce, bigamy and scandalous lawsuits. Afflicted by Saturn or Uranus, it presages the premature death of the spouse.
NEPTUNE IN THE EIGHTH HOUSE, well aspected, gives gains through marriage and is favourable for occult investigations, facilitating the obtaining of direct knowledge.
Badly aspected, it produces death in consequence of an illness of short duration, in swimming, by terrible accident or in any other strange form, occasioning losses through frauds or deceptions connected with the spouse, financial difficulties with public corporations and troublesome inheritances. NEPTUNE IN THE NINTH HOUSE gives particular religious beliefs and attraction to the occult sciences.
If it is very well aspected it gives extraordinary visions, presentiments and prophecies intuitively, as well as gains and pleasures in excursions and long journeys. When it is afflicted it makes the mind fearful, on the alert and with vague presentiments, inclining also to travel, but occasioning vexations through it.
NEPTUNE IN THE TENTH HOUSE, well disposed, provides an agreeable and lucrative position, such as that of private secretary, manager of some commercial or financial enterprise, or director of a philanthropic, mystical or scientific society. It also indicates some inheritance or legacy. If it is in trine with the Sun or the Moon it gives capacity for cultivating the spiritual life, for several great seers possess this aspect.
There is some probability of an accident to one of the parents while the person is still a child. In general, if well disposed, it presages successes by periods, followed by reverses and bad moments. It frequently produces navigators.
If afflicted it indicates frauds, deceptions and dishonour with scandals and sorrows. NEPTUNE IN THE ELEVENTH HOUSE, well aspected, indicates a person of high spiritual aspirations who attracts other similar ones who will benefit him. If afflicted it signifies badly chosen, depraved and dissolute friends who will bring him harm.
NEPTUNE IN THE TWELFTH HOUSE, well aspected, gives success in occult, scientific or investigative work. It provides secret spiritual relations. It is very favourable if in good aspect with the luminaries or with the benefics.
If afflicted, it gives a propensity to find oneself confined in hospital or prison because of enemies, through a contagious illness or through madness brought on by perverted practices. (To be continued)
p. 1515 Suddha Dharma Mandalam COMMENTARIES ON THE BHAGAVAD GITA BASHYA by Hamsa Yogui Explanatory synthesis by the Guru Swami Subramanianda Castilian version by G.
Bruno. (Continuation) The position of Hamsa Yogui, who relies on the various authorities classified by rank in the table that follows, can be briefly stated thus: NAMES CHAPTERS SLOKAS OR VERSES Samashti Pranava Shastra ----- 8 Vastu Tatva Sastra 3 72 Bharata Sutra of Yoga Vyasa 4 96 Pranava Sastra 4 96 The Bharata of Bhargava Vyasa, of 24000 Slokas 6 144 It is to be noted that, except in one instance, each of the subsequent works contains 24 verses in each chapter.
Hamsa Yogui also establishes that the sages who trust in the Vasudeva Taru Chaya, that is, those of the Vasudeva rekha, hold that the effective counsel of the Lord to Arjuna comprised the meaning of seven verses, beginning with Ashochayan, Kutastwa, Klibyamma, Satvaguhyatamam, Iswarassarvabytanam, Tameva saranam, Sarva Dharman Parityajya, and that the Buddhas recorded the complete meaning of those seven verses in five hundred and seventy-six slokas upon the akashic tablets.
That Sanjaya, by the faculty of his divine vision, saw those 576 slokas and narrated them to the blind King. That Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa incorporated them into his Mahabharata and together with them annexed some incidental and necessary verses, with which the total of 745 slokas was reached.
The author of the commentaries also holds that those 745 — of which 620 are attributed to the Lord, 57 to Arjuna, 67 to Sanjaya and one to Dhritarashtra — is a distribution confirmed by Vaisampayana in his famous lines.
p. 1616 Of these verses, the one corresponding to the blind King denotes his yearnings to comprehend completely the Yoga Brahma Vidya; the 67 Slokas of Sanjaya constitute an exposition of the science; the 57 of Arjuna and the 620 of the Lord may be considered in the same sense.
The fifth topic treats of the Anubandhi chatushtaya, which may be entitled the four points of view with reference to which the Bhagavad Gita can be studied; that is, from the point of view or object pursued by the aspirant, or from what is called phala or result executable by such study, or from the point of view of the ways and means of such aspirant, or taking into account his characteristics for such study.
The nature of the theme developed by the Bhagavad Gita is Brahman, perceptible in the Purusha, in the Paramatma, in the Atma, in the Jiva and in the Akshara, from which result is attained that knowledge that: “All is born of the nature of Brahman; all is necessary, all is yet Brahman”.
The ways and means in the teaching of the system are self-evident, and the characteristic of the aspirant is that which indicates his yearning to know the scripture and to attain the realisation of its teachings. But these four points of view can be summed up in two, that is, what concerns the theme and the aspirant — as is the case with the Mahabharata — with the object of facilitating an easier comprehension of the matter.
Concerning the sixth topic, which we have reserved for consideration now, its title is Gita Sangrahartha Nirupanam, that is, the Reason of the hidden Meaning or principal point of the Gita.
Hamsa Yogui certainly does not mean by this that he enters into detailed explanations of the multiple topics discussed in the various verses of the different chapters, but rather that the method adopted by him in this chapter is as follows: First he demonstrates the intimate relation existing between one chapter and the one following.
Then he classifies in a general manner the content of each chapter, calling marked attention to the different topics to which such content separately refers, often summing up in few words the conclusions involved in the teachings that treat those topics.
And finally, he clarifies with the utmost precision the principal questions and doubts that must be elucidated and resolved by the four sections respectively, constructed as they are of six chapters each.
The notable analysis to which he submits the teachings of the Gita in the first place, and then harmonises them in the course of the exposition, throws torrents of light upon this scripture, making clear the interpretation that in it is treasured the knowledge of the Sacred Science, in general and in particular, which was rather badly understood by many students who devoted long years to its study.
Adopting this discriminative method, Hamsa Yogui observes that the First Chapter corresponds to the Pranava prefix of the Gayatri symbol as explained in the third topic. This chapter expresses, among other things, the truth that the Cosmoses, symbolised by the Gayatri, are manifested from Brahman.
p. 1717 aspect when its different constituents — THE ONE LIFE AND THE ONE ROOT OF MATTER — are separated one from the other. This state of separation, naturally, is anterior to the appearance of the 24 elements, which lie at the base of the concrete Universes, solar systems and worlds. The next point to be considered in connection with this chapter is the reason for the introduction of the first verse in the particular place where it stands.
Hamsa Yogui observes that such placement is due to compliance with the literary canon in force in Sanskrit compositions and writings considered in order and merit as ELEVATED, which canon requires that the nature of the matter treated in such writings and compositions must appear at the very beginning, whether by express words or by implication. (Shabdato Arthatova).
Thus, in accord with that proposition, Hamsa Yogui proceeds, taking one by one nine of the ten words of which the verse consists, and establishes the premise that the verses demonstrate the matter treated by the Gita, which is: Yoga Brahma Vidya.
In support of that assertion, Hamsa Yogui takes the first and second words: Dharmanshetra Kurukshetra, and says that the first connotes the visible and dense bodies of man, while the latter refers to his subtle and invisible bodies. The fifth and sixth words, Mamakha and Pandavah, similarly express the gross emotions of the lower human nature and the virtuous qualities of the higher, respectively.
The third and fourth words, Samavetah Yuyutsavaha, explain the particular character of those two aspects, in which the characteristics belonging to each of them are strongly united among themselves, while each of the bodies thus united is intensely hostile to the other. The remaining eighth and ninth words, Kimanurvata, raise the question concerning the working and unfolding of those two aspects of man.
In sum, the question posed in the verse as a whole, needless to say, is the same one of all times and the one that has always perplexed man — a question anterior even to the solemn sentence of the Oracle of Delphi: KNOW THYSELF — that is, the question means: What am I in this bundle of struggling elements?
If it were asked how this inquiry into the nature and constitution of man signifies that the nature of the matter of the Gita is the Yoga Brahma Vidya, the answer would be found in the maxim: “AS ABOVE, SO BELOW”. In other terms, the exposition of the constitution and nature of man, the Microcosm, necessarily implies the exposition of the constitution and nature of the Macrocosm, as likewise that of Brahman, in whom both find their synthesis.
The special reason for the choice of the microcosm, and the creation of the character of Arjuna as a concrete instance of those who might serve as a base for the exposition of the Great Science, finds its foundation in the fact that nothing is nearer to the disciple than the disciple himself, and consequently the study of his own nature proves easier than the investigation of what is external to him. (To be continued)
p. 1818 THE DEMIURGE (Continuation) By Palingenius It results from what precedes that man can, from his terrestrial existence, free himself from the dominion of the Demiurge or of the hylic World, and that this liberation is worked by Gnosis, that is, by integral Knowledge.
Let us observe, moreover, that this Knowledge has nothing in common with analytical science and in no way presupposes it; it is an illusion too widespread in our days to believe that one cannot arrive at the total synthesis except through analysis; on the contrary, ordinary science is completely relative and limited to the hylic World; it does not exist, like the latter, from the universal point of view.
On the other hand, we must also observe that the different Worlds or, according to the generally admitted expression, the diverse planes of the Universe, are not at all places or regions but modalities of existence or states of the being. This makes it possible to understand how a man who lives upon the earth can belong in reality no longer to the hylic World, but to the psychic World or even to the pneumatic World.
This is what constitutes the second birth. This, however, is not, properly speaking, anything but birth into the psychic World, by which man becomes conscious on two planes but without yet reaching the pneumatic World, that is, without identifying himself with the universal Spirit.
This last result is obtained only by him who possesses integrally the triple Knowledge, by which he is freed for ever from mortal births; this is what is expressed when it is said that only the Pneumatics are saved. The state of the Psychics is, in short, only a transitory state; it is the state of the being that is already prepared to receive the Light but does not yet perceive it, that has not become conscious of the one and immutable Truth.
When we speak of mortal births, we understand by that the modifications of the being, its passage through multiple and changing forms. There is nothing in this resembling the doctrine of reincarnation as the spiritists and theosophists admit it — a doctrine on which we shall some day have occasion to explain ourselves1.
The Pneumatic is freed from mortal births, that is, freed from form and, consequently, from the demiurgic World; he is no longer subject to the way and, consequently, he is without action; this is a point to which we shall return further on.
The Psychic, on the contrary, goes no further than the World of Formation, which is designated symbolically as the first Heaven or sphere of the Moon; from there he returns to the terrestrial World, which does not mean that he will really take a new body upon the earth, but simply that he must put on new forms, whatever they may be, before obtaining liberation1.
What we have just set forth shows the agreement — we could even say the real identity, despite certain differences of expression — between the gnostic doctrine and the doctrines 1 It is known that René Guénon is anti-reincarnationist and anti-theosophist, which explains his disagreement with the doctrine of reincarnation as formulated by the theosophists and martinists.
p. 1919 oriental doctrines and, more particularly, with the Vedanta, the most orthodox of all the metaphysical systems founded upon Brahmanism. That is why we can complete what we have indicated on the diverse states of the being by transcribing some quotations from the Treatise on the Knowledge of the Spirit of Sankaratchrya.
“There is no other means of obtaining complete and final liberation except Knowledge; it is the sole instrument that unties the bonds of the passions; without Knowledge, Beatitude cannot be obtained. “Action, not being opposed to ignorance, cannot drive it away; but Knowledge dissipates ignorance as Light dissipates the darkness”.
Ignorance is, here, the state of the being wrapped in the darkness of the hylic World, bound to the illusory appearance of Matter and to individual distinctions. By Knowledge, which is not of the domain of action but is superior to it, all those illusions disappear, as we have said before.
“When the ignorance born of terrestrial attractions is dissipated, the Spirit, by its own splendour, shines afar, in an undivided state, as the Sun spreads its brightness when the cloud is dispersed”.
But, before reaching this state, the being passes through an intermediate state, that which corresponds to the psychic World; then he believes himself to be, no longer the material body, but the individual soul, for all distinction has not disappeared for him, because he has not yet left the domain of the Demiurge.
“Imagining himself to be the individual soul, man is frightened, like a person who by error takes a piece of rope for a serpent; but his fright is dissipated by the perception that he is not the soul but the universal Spirit”.
He who has become conscious of the two manifested Worlds, that is, of the hylic World, the assemblage of gross or material manifestations, and of the psychic World, the assemblage of subtle manifestations, is twice-born, is Dwidja; but he who is conscious of the unmanifested Universe or of the formless World, that is, of the pneumatic World, and has arrived at the identification of himself with the universal Spirit, Atma — he alone can be called Yogi, that is, united with the universal Spirit.
“The Yogi whose intellect is perfect contemplates all things as being in himself and, thus, by the eye of Knowledge, perceives that all is Spirit”. Let us note, in passing, that the hylic World is compared to the waking state, the psychic World to the dream state, and the pneumatic World to deep sleep. We must remember, in this connection, that the unmanifested is superior to the manifested, because it is its principle.
Above the pneumatic Universe there is now, according to the gnostic doctrine, only the Pleroma, which can be considered as constituted by the assemblage of the attributes of the Divinity. It is not a fourth World but the universal Spirit itself, supreme Principle of the Three Worlds, neither manifested nor unmanifested, indefinable, inconceivable and incomprehensible.
The Yogi or the Pneumatic — for at bottom it is the same — perceives himself not as a gross form nor as a subtle form but as a formless being; he identifies himself, then, with the universal Spirit.
p. 2020 “He is Brahma who, having been seen, no other object can be contemplated; having identified oneself with him, no birth can take place; having been perceived, there is nothing more that can be perceived. “He is Brahma who is everywhere, in everything; in middle space, in what is above and in what is below; the true, the living, the happy, without duality, indivisible, eternal and one.
“He is Brahma, who is without greatness, without extension, uncreated, incorruptible, without figure, without qualities or character. “He is Brahma, by whom all things are illumined, whose light makes the Sun shine and all the luminous bodies, but who is not made manifest by their light. “He himself compenetrates his own eternal essence and contemplates the entire World, which appears as being Brahma.
“Brahma resembles the World in nothing, and apart from Brahma there is nothing; all that seems to exist outside him is an illusion. “Of all that is seen, of all that is heard, nothing exists but Brahma and, by the knowledge of the principle, Brahma is contemplated as the True Being, living, happy, without duality.
“The eye of Knowledge contemplates the true Being, living, happy, compenetrating everything; but the eye of ignorance does not discover it, does not perceive it, as a blind man does not see the light. “When the Sun of spiritual Knowledge rises in the heaven of the heart, it dissipates the darkness, compenetrates everything, embraces everything and illumines everything”.
Let us note that the Brahma spoken of here is the higher Brahma; great care must be taken to distinguish it from the lower Brahma, for the latter is nothing other than the Demiurge considered as the reflection of Being. For the Yogi there is only the higher Brahma, which contains all things and outside of which there is nothing; the Demiurge and his work of division exist no more.
“He who has made the pilgrimage of his own spirit, a pilgrimage in which there is nothing that concerns situation, place or time, which is everywhere, which experiences neither heat nor cold [Sic: the Spanish prints “ni el color ni al frío”, reading “color” for “calor”], which grants a perpetual felicity and a liberation from all pain; he is without action; he knows all things and obtains the eternal Beatitude”. (To be continued).
p. 2121 COSMIC INFLUENCES AND REACTIONS OF LIVING BEINGS. (Continuation). Influence of colours — Chromotherapy By Pitágoras, S. I.
Chromotherapy (from Chroma, colour, and Therapeia, therapeutics) is the name that Dr. Foveau de Courmelles has given to the therapeutics of mental, emotional and physical illnesses by the employment of colours. Chromotherapy is not a modern discovery, for it has been employed from the remotest epochs. We have already seen how the Chinese made certain colours correspond with certain organs of the body.
In China itself and in the Caucasus for centuries, and in France since the fifteenth century, the sick with smallpox, roseola and scarlatina were cured by means of red light.
Dr. Albert Garrigues has pointed out that in India, in the third Vedic period, there were used, above all for cutaneous affections, the Eclipta prosyrata, the colocynth (whose infusion is of golden yellow colour) and the Curcuma longa (whose infusion is yellow), to which indigo was added to obtain a green solution.
In the seventeenth century, the Avignon physician Teodoro Desjardins cured his patients by means of solar rays condensed in water contained in bottles of various colours, mixed with water also contained in bottles of various colours and previously exposed to the lunar rays. This method, as we shall see further on, will be advocated anew by the moderns, among whom we mention Phasad Jha in India and Dr. Babbitt in the West.
With the triumph of materialist ideas, this therapeutic system was more and more forgotten, but there have always been some who had faith in its efficacy and today, after having smiled a good deal over this method and having considered, as always, those who employed it charlatans, the men of science have had to yield before the great quantity of experiments confirming the real action and efficacy of colours upon the sick.
Goethe already, in his Treatise on colours, wrote with reason: “To reach perfection in the art of colouring, the artist must consider the moral effects of colours, their physiological effects, their technical nature and, finally, the influence external circumstances exercise upon them. Colours act upon the soul: they can excite sensations in it, awaken emotions and ideas that rest us or agitate us and provoke sadness or joy.
In 1871, General Pleasanton extended to man the result of his experiments on plants and considered blue and “Mazarine Glass” (cobalt-blue glass) as the most efficacious remedies against all illnesses. In India, the Pandit Phasad Jha published an opuscule, “Chromotherapy”, which had many editions, in which he set forth his method of treatment by colours. This method consists in filling bottles of coloured glass and exposing them to the sun for a certain time. He
p. 2222 affirms that “blue water”, that is, the water contained in a bottle of that colour, “yellow water”, etc., possess the same properties as the corresponding colours, and he employs them as drink or in washings.
Gornold wished to verify what Phasad Jha affirmed and carried out many experiments according to this method, which demonstrated that, really, “red water” acted on the stomach like quassia, “yellow water” was purgative, “blue water” calming, etc. Why be surprised, we ask ourselves, at the efficacy of this method? Why could not the solar rays, filtered through a coloured filter, grant to water the same properties as the colour of the filter?
Is not vitamin D the result of the synthetic action of ultraviolet rays upon ergosterine? Do not many chemical substances preserved in coloured glasses undergo profound modifications in their chemical properties if those glasses are exposed to the action of the light filtering through the coloured glass?
Chromotherapy, in consequence of the experimental results obtained by many investigators, has today spread everywhere and above all in England, where an International College of Chromatics has been founded.
In France, Dr. Regnault carried out many experiments on Chromotherapy in 1911 and 1920, and in 1924 published in the Côte d’Azur médicale the result of those experiments, advising that the colours for the walls of rooms and the tapestries be chosen according to the use for which those rooms were destined.
Previously, those same counsels had been given, in England, by Kemp Prossor, Dubash and Hopkins, who had established with exactness which were the colours most suitable for the walls of clinics and of private rooms, and even advised printing books with green ink on cream-coloured paper.
In 1929, Mangin communicated to the Académie des Sciences a note by Truffaut and Pastax on a new treatment of the diseases of plants by means of colouring matters.
In 1830 [Sic: so printed; the surrounding chronology suggests 1930] Larvaron, professor of agriculture, used a radiocampimeter to determine the action of colours, and wrote in the Côte d’Azur médicale: “The problem that presents itself consists in seeking, for each illness, the action of the colours (chords of resonance) that provokes the cure”.
At the international Congress of radiesthesia held at Lausanne in September 1934, Mellin said, with regard to the influence of colours, that there are some that are baleful for certain persons, who ought to avoid them, receiving the influence only of those that are in harmony with their own radiations, in order to have joy, happiness and health.
As can be seen, modern experiments have demonstrated the real influence of colours upon living beings — an influence that can be favourable or unfavourable in those who enjoy perfect health, according as they contribute to the maintenance of the state of health or disturb it, and that can be favourable or unfavourable in the sick, according as they contribute to the re-establishment of health or accentuate the pathological state.
p. 2323 to draw the characteristic vibration away from its normality (or state of harmony or of health) produces a vibratory disharmony or state of illness. In the state of health there is, then, a harmonic play of vibrations, and in the state of illness a disharmonic play of vibrations, that is, the predominance of some and the diminution or lack of others.
If the vibratory disharmony is transitory and weak we get discomforts of every kind; if it is transitory and intense we get acute illness, and if it is relatively permanent we get chronic illness with a more or less intense symptomatology, according to the more or less profound permanent vibratory disturbance.
We have already said that to each vibration corresponds a determinate colour and, consequently, the reciprocal play of those vibrations manifests itself as a reciprocal play of colours which, in the aura, shows itself as an incessant kaleidoscopic surge.
We have also said that the mental, vital and physical vibrations manifest themselves with their corresponding colours, which we find in the aura perennially modifying itself through their reciprocal influences.
The observation of that marvellous spectacle of the aura by clairvoyant eyes permits, then, those who know how to interpret those constant modifications of colours to establish: a) — Whether there is harmony of vibrations, or health. b) — Whether there is disharmony of vibrations, or illness. c) — Whether the disharmony is mental, astral or physical. d) — Whether the disharmony is transitory (mental, emotional, sensorial state) or permanent (acute or chronic pathological state, mental, vital, physical.) The disharmonising causes, transitory or permanent, can be of mental, astral or physical origin (thoughts, feelings, sensations) and can act upon parts or upon the totality of the being.
Whether in one case or the other, the repercussion of the action is upon the integral being, and that is why thoughts act upon the emotivity and the sensoriality, feelings upon the mentality, and sensoriality upon the emotivity and the mentality.
From all that has been set forth it results that one can cure — that is, make the modified characteristic vibration of the being return to its normal state or state of health [Sic: the Spanish prints “1a modificada”, with a numeral] — either by eliminating the excess of pathogenic vibrations or by supplying the vibrations that are lacking or weak.

¡Oh, Madre! A tu misericordia me entrego.

puro como es un niño;
Se necesitan adoración, discernimiento y meditación para conseguir la unión con Él;

la do mi.
do mi la mi la do
4. 5 : 3. 4 3. 4 : 4. 5

sonidos y acordes.
engendra todo, pues in ipso vita est.
Et habitavit in nobis.

Enseñanzas de Surya S. I.

a
la
mediumnidad
y
obsesión,
a

del Mundo demiúrgico; no está más sometido al camino y, por consiguiente, es sin acción;

Por Pitágoras, S. I.
