M. In recollection, so as not to disturb the mystical unction that envelops us, we enter the gentle retreat of a private library: furniture, works of art, books and persons, everything seems to have ripened its inner light there. A woman, in the inexpressible glory of her florescence, extends her immaterial wings over the beauty of this sanctuary, herself the most finished work of art in the salon.
Everything seems to have been steeped in her tender spiritual grace, in her enchanting vivacity, in the exquisite subtlety of her femininity. Before the sober severity of his writing-desk, a man, a noble representative of his race, handsome of face, with deep, gentle, pensive eyes, looks into those other sensitive eyes, and in their depths he sees... Saturating himself in them, he bends over the immaculate whiteness of the paper and writes...
The aura of the angel of his life sustains him, lends him her wings to drink in spaces, and although, absorbed in the grandiose finality of his yearnings, he is at times not conscious of her presence, her spiritual influence, “one with him”, nourishes him.
His brain is illumined, and the outer luminaries of his axes flash, and that lofty receptive brow of his grows subtle in incorporeal limitlessness: thoughts from remote regions find expression between his fingers, and the pen shapes them into visible song. The rare virtue of GENIUS envelops them. The two of them, man and woman, upon the Earth, have formed, through divinised love, a single being...
Who are they, she and he? José Alejandro Saint-Yves and his wife, “in the pious retreat of the rue Vernet” ………………………………………………………………………………………………………... José Alejandro Saint-Yves was born in Paris, at one in the morning, on 28 March 1842.
His father, Guillermo A1ejandro Saint-Yves [Sic: the Spanish prints “A1ejandro”, with a numeral], was an alienist physician and, through his incomprehension of his son, was his tormentor. …”Come unto me, you who are sad and laden with sorrow; I would give you rest”.
In the midst of his bitterness, the child felt the call, and among the shadows [Sic: the Spanish prints “1as sombras”, with a numeral] of his laceration, he took once more the road toward the springs of his being. 1st. PERIOD — CHILDHOOD, ADOLESCENCE — UP TO AGE 22, SUBJECTION, SUFFERING, REBELLION.
A desire for liberty at any cost, thwarted by an intransigent paternal subjection, set two powers face to face. Obstinate, violent, the tender soul of the little one, in suffering, does not bend. And the father, his moral authority inwardly lost, clamps on physical bars there where the power of coercion fell defeated. At thirteen, this hero of painful combat is taken to the penitentiary of Mettray.
p. 55 But behold, Providence was watching over the sorrow and the unsatisfied anxiety of that solitary child, who had promised himself to “free himself or die”. When he arrived at Mettray, his “plans toppled like a house of cards”. Because at Mettray, instead of an executioner, de Metz awaited him.
Providence, which had denied him a father among men, now presented him with a spiritual father.
In charge of the prison, where so many tormented souls saw the light through his mediation, the old man “grave and charming, the complete gentleman” who directed it understood the desperate flutterings of the celestial bird in its captivity, and treating him with sweetness and with kindness, penetrated the sorrowful reserves of that vibrant harp and “initiated” it into the secrets of its higher destiny.
And it was that in that “prison” a principle of love was lived; obedience was to be assent, not subordination; it was to be conformity, freely accepted, with the eternal principle that transcends the command and illumines it, and not inertia, passivity, ignorance or suppression of what is noblest in man: discernment. ―Everything for liberty, nothing by obligation‖ was the motto his Master presented to him; and Saint-Yves could offer no other kind of obedience than that which the superior spirit renders voluntarily.
His psychism, painfully conscious, could not be weakened or bowed by the summons to violence, and when, undisciplined and strange, he appears provocative and impassive before the world, it was that, uncomprehended, he was jealously safeguarding the one treasure left to him in his prison: Liberty. For the first time, Saint Yves confronted Authority and not Force. It will be the basis of his social work.
Two years of Mettray, then the Lycée... Alas! The soul, initiated into the secrets of Truth and confronted by her, knew no peace.
The searing brands of the violence suffered so early had left the burn of open sores upon his so-fine skin, and the silken hand of his Master guided him no more... And he fell once again under the ignominy of the halter! By order of his father, scarcely having taken his baccalaureate and as the consequence of a conflict with a professor, before his majority, he had to enlist in the marine infantry.
Behold him, exiled in his body, convulsed in his soul, enduring one of the most iron-bound and painful of disciplines for his love of liberty. And again he called upon liberty or Death. And Providence answered once more the anguish of his call and loosened the tight embrace of his Fatality.
And here too de Metz was his Providence. He obtained the exchange of his service, and he entered naval medicine at the school of Brest. At 22, a grave illness frees him also from this work and, exhausted, full of sad experiences, but never defeated, he recovers at the last, for ever, his outward liberty.
2nd. PERIOD — THUS BEGINS A 2nd. STAGE OF HIS LIFE - WHICH IS ALSO THAT OF THE BEGINNING OF HIS MATURITY — Up to age 36. LIBER- TY,. STUDY, SCEPTICISM, THE TERRIBLE COMBAT, BEGINNINGS OF VOCATION.
p. 66 The external bonds that compressed him have been untied. The inner possibilities can arise. But.., oh sorrow!, the benumbed soul shudders in exhausting spasms between shadow and light.
Five years in Jersey, an emigrant among emigrants, with the inner “tormentor” that gives him no rest. He struggles for his living and works as a teacher... He works steadily; and he studies and meditates even more than he works.
The “British Museum” came to know his restless steps of an insatiable investigator and opened wide to him the treasures of human knowledge; and when, leaving the books for a moment, he looked about him, the political exiles of the Second Empire gave him in their turn a lesson. Three springs of knowledge he thus had within reach: hard necessity, books and men. And the faith that knew how to drain experience to the bottom.
What did men give him? “Principles, doctrines, general aspirations, generous sentiments of those proscribed men — I did not fail to listen to all that stirred within them. The evangelical fraternity, which at times seemed to clasp them into one great family in exile, “disappeared where the Empire was concerned.
And even when he understands the reasons for their feelings, his heart is wrung to observe that men, “through divergence of ideas, were capable of heaping every insult upon one another and accusing one another of every crime”. What do the books tell him?
Following the counsel of de Metz, whom even from afar he continued to revere as a father, he devoted himself to satisfying his insatiable avidity for knowledge and drank at every spring, and especially at Fabre d’Olivet, the learned philosopher and linguist of the Synthetic School of Court de Gébelin; he was drawn by this “pagan” transported into the nineteenth century, this “restorer” of the religious philosophy of bygone times.
He would leave a deep imprint on his spirit. Like him, he will make all the civilisations file past and will follow the thread of history through the labyrinth of its evolutions. But essential differences separate the metaphysical realisation of the one from the social and mystical realisation of the other; and although Fabre d’Olivet gave the material for the work, Saint Yves made of it a masterpiece.
What lesson does his life bring? Free now of the bonds of external despotism, he will be able to seek within himself the elements useful to his future creation. But behold, he was not inwardly free.
Perhaps the external struggles were the reflection of the great inner combat; perhaps... Thought and feeling tear at each other like enemies. And if during mystical meditations he gently rocks and quiets his soul, as soon as he reasons his “faith does not stand, and complete obscurity reigns in him”.
When this state of his soul is translated outward, the separation of mind and heart becomes the antagonistic and irreconcilable dualism of Science and Religion. And his social vocation springs to life to answer the double necessity of reconciling, in the world and in the individual, and analogically in all that exists, the seemingly hostile principles that move within them.
p. 77 Violently interrupting his ascetic retreat of study and preparation, he flies from Jersey to Paris to offer his arm to the fatherland in peril... War!... And the peace once signed, peace withdrew from him.
The necessity of living binds him anew. Voluntarily and passingly, he accepts a post in the Ministry of the Interior. The daily bread takes on a bitter savour...
His mother dies, his brother, and de Metz as well. One by one life snatches from him his dearest affections. Alone!... because it is in solitude without congratulations that the Soundless Voice speaks at last...
Terrible and eternal combat of death and life, of shadow and light, of matter and spirit, of illusion and Truth.., in the midst of the world quiet and deaf to the inner clamour, of the Sanctuary closed and winking as it half-opens its door, of the God asleep in abysses and drawing one into his sleep, of the Veil that is rent and the light which, visible, playing tricks upon the soul, does not come to dwell for ever in the empty abode...!
Disheartened, sombre, without contentment, he seeks pleasure for a moment… but pleasure flees him. The flaming mask of profane joy [Sic: the Spanish prints “1a alegría”, with a numeral] makes a tragic grimace at him. He squeezes it between his fingers and ash remains to him...
This blue bird could not touch the mire! Oh, the implacable “memory” of other cups of essences, which in the terrestrial exile offer their sweet honey and turn bitter every worldly drink! “Disgusted, not with men, but with all that divides them, without any ambition of career or fortune, I felt like the soul of a dead man among the living, in whose existence and station my thought was no longer incarnated.
Then calumny took advantage of his maddened searching for God among the shadows. Everything was said of him. But he soon flew above it all.
Because it was then that, fortifying himself with study and experience, he was beginning already to radiate from his own message. The works of his youth and of his premature maturity gave presentiment of more glorious destinies: “The Hours”, “The Keys of the East”, “The Lyric Testament”, “The Mystery of Progress” contain the sketches of the themes to come.
The mystery of the sacred sciences of Antiquity spoke through the enthusiastic lyric poems of the impassioned poet who, on becoming independent, was beginning to know the purified air of the summits. And with the third period of his life [Sic: the Spanish prints “torcer” for “tercer”] opens the second moment of his creation. 3rd.
PERIOD — GOLDEN AGE — MATURITY — ALL WITH LOVE: MARRIAGE, SUCCESS, FORTUNE AND HONOURS — HIS CROWNING WORKS. Sun exalted in Aries, from whose furthest edge, entering already into the Bull, Mars hurls his impulsive ray. In communion with the Sun, Venus kindles in Aries.
Third decanate of Sagittarius on the Ascendant and Jupiter peering above it. The Moon in mid-Heaven and Libra on the Meridian holding fast the scattered forces and submitting the whole to the action of its master. He “will be the architect of his own destiny... Magnanimous and justice-dealing, philosopher, poet, musician, and artist!...
p. 88 Knight-errant of the divine, he will take up the pen as the sword of sublime conquests, and the sun will kindle upon his brow the fire of unfading beauty, the ardour of the life that is not quenched. He will know how to dive into the depths with firm step and sustained breath. Fortune, difficult to attain, will be sure.
Sagittarius in his double nature will hold for him “his reward and his punishment”. The reward begins, and for a time the punishment is suspended. Let us draw the curtain on misfortune.
The days of light begin; near the zenith, the Moon pours her rays upon the sorrowful discordance of his life and promises him, promises him the temporary redemption of her love. He is afterwards to make it definitive. “I ask of the good God up in Heaven no other paradise than the one He gave me on Earth.
Who calls forth the fervour of these words? She whom he will proclaim in his works the angel of his life, and who, dead, becomes the angel of the Archeometer. The Countess of Keller was the morganatic widow of the Tsar of Russia Alexander II.
She knew the secret of the courts and the inner mechanism of souls. Haloed by the grace of intelligence and of sensibility, she must have interpreted clearly the magnificent symphony of the artist and the thinker… In giving him her love, she gave him everything: a haven of peace in his tempest, encouragement, fortune and position.
To the Marquis Saint Yves d’Alveydre [Sic: the Spanish prints “A1 Marqués”, with a numeral] all the courts of Europe would give passage, and in the intellectual, political, social and religious field [Sic: the Spanish prints “intelectual1”, with a numeral] his voice could be heard! The understanding was instantaneous.
No base interest united them; only the mutual and delicate irresistible attraction of two select souls that grew greater in the happy interchange.
Those who knew them — among them Barlet — speak with admiring emotion of the miracle of this singular alliance, of the extraordinary intelligence, the “simple goodness”, the majestic and charming nobility of the lady; of the “inexpressible attraction” of the gentleman’s conversation, “so deep, so lively and so cordial”, of the happiness he felt in her presence, and how, necessarily, at that moment of his life, the eclosion and the definitive liberation of his divinity had to be accomplished.
A palace of art and of beauty, in the little dream-house of the “rue Vernet”, the tapestries and the lights, the paintings and sculptures, the harmony of their arrangement, formed the fitting frame of the superiority of the love they contained. There, sweetly, thoughts and feelings, so long enemies, were united by love...
The soul of the Master, gathering the tumultuous currents, guided them toward a single sea, and a luminous Synthesis opened its way amid abundance and dispersion. What wonder, then, that the two poles of Love meeting in these souls, the creative flame should hide itself for its definitive creation?
p. 99 One after another, the various “Missions” presented it, and his masterworks came forth: Mission of the Sovereigns 1882 Mission of the Workers 1882 Mission of the Jews 1884 The True France (Mission of the French) 1887 Joan of Arc Victorious 1889 In all of them the doctrine is set forth and complemented.
Numerous opuscules come to its aid to fill, in more direct or circumstantial form, the gaps of efficacy he considered indispensable to complete1, and in the form of lyric poems he addresses the sovereigns of Europe, showing them the excellence of the social laws in which he would interest them2.
With feverish activity, with ardent faith in the triumph of the Idea, with book, opuscule or word, the knight-errant with light upon his brow enters every kingdom and leaves his message. More still: he tries to realise it. What is this message?
We have said it: the trinitarian social law, or synarchy.
Synarchy of the human groups in syndicate to form the economic and professional Press of France; internal organisation of the country by the union of the different economic classes as the base of the synarchy of the nation; distinction of the social functions of TEACHING, LEGISLATION AND ECONOMY, with the State as executor of the total national will; three chambers corresponding to the three functions: the first, expression of the national Conscience and living testimony of the universal Religion (lay Universities and Cults); the second, charged with civil legislation; the third, with economic interests (“Mission of the Workers”).
But this synarchy of each nation is the base of the synarchy of Europe with its three Councils: 1) The International Council of the National Churches, representation of the teaching bodies of each nation, amplification, in a vaster unity, Europe, of that Chamber of Teaching of each country and, like it, voice of universal reason among the men it aspires to direct.
It is the representative of Authority, that providential force which, leaving in liberty, does not “oblige” but illumines, and which is followed only by “assent” of the will (SPIRIT); 2) The European Council of the National States, amplification of the Chamber of National Legislation, for all questions of international public law, with a European Constitution issuing from its bosom: SOUL, law in action, which can impose itself by coercion, necessary to the present human state, through the executing arm of the armies of land and sea.
It is equivalent to Power, to the “justice that holds in one hand the balance and in the other the sword”. 1 Votes of the Syndicate of the Economic Press, Economic order in the Electorate and in the State, etc. 2 Centenary of 1789 Royal maternity and royal marriages (to the Royal fam. of Denmark). Poem of the Queen (to the Queen of England). The emperor Alexander III.
p. 1010 3) Finally, the European Council of the National Communes presided over by an “arbitral emperor”, projection of the economic Chamber and, like it, BODY, sustaining base of the whole, expression of the Popular Will, of the Fatality of the passions, Destiny facing Providence balancing each other in human Will, popular Will facing the Authority that illumines it with love, and the Power that shapes into living law that expression of Love, and contemplates, conducts, coordinates, regulates and fixes, in accord with that universal Will, the instinctive forces of the social mass (“Mission of the Sovereigns”).
And thus from base to summit, from the individual to God, synarchy becomes the sole harmonising law of life; because it is the harmonised expression of that Total Life. The “Mission of the Jews”, his principal work, passing from Europe to Humanity, establishes the Universal Synarchy.
As in the “True France” and the “Mission of the Sovereigns”, twenty-two chapters recall the twenty-two keys of the Tarot, the twenty-two major arcana in which everything is shown and through which the Mystery operates. In a grandiose procession, man appears in History across the ages and, in his fragmentation, peoples epochs, nations and races.
Result and concretion of all his thoughts, this work has the majesty of the summits touched by the pure sun of the spirit. And both in the dispersing Anarchy and in its rare Syntheses of Love that History shows us, always the “trinitarian law” reveals itself and seeks to be applied, coming forth from the depths of the sanctuaries to illumine, in a few beautiful moments, the terrible night of humanity.
And just as the Synarchy of Humanity requires the synarchy of the States, the Synarchy of the States requires the “understanding” of the social groups, the political parties, the economic interests, the scientific and religious bodies among themselves.
And going even further, we would say, the Synarchy of total Humanity requires the Synarchy of each particular man, the internal application of the trinitarian law in the society of his triple constitution of body, soul and spirit, and, within each one, of his component elements.
It was the expression of the Word in Humanity that Saint Yves was already seeking through a form, an organisational modality, that first distinction he establishes between authority and power, as in The Absolute Unity there unfolds, by the potency of Love, the Dyad of Omnipotence and of Infinite Wisdom, of Father and Mother as the first act of creation: IEVE (Iswara-Prakriti, Osiris-Isis in the sanctuaries).
And in the Trinity of his social law or synarchy, of the three powers representative of the three functions applied in their universality, the mystic bard sang the subsequent Ineffable Trinity, second act of creation in Eternity, the Divine Word “ordering its potencies”, the Word creating all by its breath, “Holy Spirit of Eternal Life”… “Father, Son, Holy Spirit: the Father enclosing in himself the Mother or Nature; the Holy Spirit finding himself at once in the Father as Love, in the Son as creative breath”...
p. 1111 The grandiose panorama swept him on… The Word must live!.... And to awaken the sleeping Word was his torture. Heeded for an instant, borne to the summit of honours by his attempt to form the Economic and Professional Press of France into a Syndicate, he was covered with flowers, but his offering was not drunk.
There were too many vested interests for this sublime world, though coveted by the soul’s thirst, to be tasted by lips poisoned with unwholesome liquors. Nor did Saint Yves know how to veil it or lower it so as to present it to the taste of human complacencies. The Truth revealed to his being demanded of him the totality of its glorious nakedness.
No subterfuges, no accommodations, no politics, no diplomacies. And his project of realisation fell... And it is that its success, for the moment, could only be spiritual.
A pandit guru of India, a Master of the Agartha, an Initiatic School of high degrees, whose name signifies the “Unconquerable by Violence”, left his mystic retreat and voluntarily, in consequence of the publication of the “Mission of the Jews”, draws near for six months to the lay ascetic to give him, with Brahmanic initiation, the sacred content of its mysteries and the teaching of Vedic Sanskrit and of Vattan, the ancient tongue unknown in the West.
The soul ripens yet more amply, already the lovely flower of the exquisite artist, ductile as soft clay to the divine suggestion. And he publishes the “Mission of India”, which he at once withdraws from circulation, fearing to compromise his Guru. The Master still has confidence in the coming title of his work — too serious, however, and too profound to interest that politics without vast horizons of panorama.
And following the “Mission of the Jews” he publishes the “True France” and “Joan of Arc Victorious”. By the first he passes to the practical application of the principles already developed in the other works, investigating deeper still into political power, distinguishing the governors from the governed, the will of the sovereigns from the popular will.
By the second, a lyric epopee in its mystical and transcendental aspect, he closes the progressive series of his social work, so far as institutions fitted to accomplish it are concerned. “The principle of the synarchic law which appears so evident in the words and acts of the Maid,” says its author, “confirms our ‘Missions’, illuminating with a vivid light the present situation of France and of the rest of the world.
For the moment, he will say no more; it falls to men to examine officially the synarchic law and to apply it, and to him, remounting from the plane of facts and of laws to that of principles, to gather these in order to offer them in his turn.
As this period of his life closes — ten years of exaltation and of triumph, of indefatigable labour, sustained by fortune and love — the dull tints of a stormy twilight begin to veil the splendour of the light. Grey clouds gather on the horizon of his life, before so clear, and Providence, which had given him everything “while it was necessary”, his work now accomplished, withdrew everything from him again by secret designs.
p. 1212 4th. PERIOD — THE LAST YEARS — TO DIE IN ORDER TO BE REBORN — THE INEXTINGUISHABLE LIGHT — ―THE THEOGONY OF THE PATRIARCHS‖ — ―THE AR- CHEOMETER‖. Fourth act. — The symphony in the major key reaches its term; but before dying away in its last sounds there are reborn, in an intense “crescendo”, the themes of death and immortality.
The companion has died… Torn by the un-twinning, what has remained of her, enclosed in the Earth, folds itself wearily into the aridity of desolation... Grey suffering... Work, work, sweet Master of the pensive eyes!...
Providence keeps vigil still in your agony. The High Science calls you.., and its lustral water is so consoling and fresh... Arise, plunge your sorrowing soul into the Essence and bathe in the waves of Immortality!
One day of religious festival, the liberated bird returned to its cage bearing in its golden beak, captive, the Sun. The two parts of that single soul then fused in an embrace of eternity. Each on its own plane, they would go on working for the “same thing”.
And she, the companion, who had opened all the human doors that he might pass through them, bearer of the light, dead, opened the divine doors which for a moment, closed, eclipsed the Sun, and brought it to him, all bathed in His Love. The inextinguishable Light had come...
Elaboration, preparation, adaptation of his message for humanity: revision of all his human knowledge [Sic: the Spanish prints “tojos”, a letter-j slip in the word for “all”] in order to translate the Truth more seriously.
Long years of indefatigable, constant labour in his tranquil and modest little house at Versailles, where only the voice of the Master was heard, and of some devoted disciple who visited him. …And there arose the “Theogony of the Patriarchs” and “The Archeometer”. What is the Archeometer? It is the key of the Word.
In twenty-two essential significations, in a universal lexicon of twenty-two signs taken from Hebrew, from Vedic Sanskrit and from Vattan, is condensed the key of all language, human and divine.
It is the universal language inscribed in the Heavens, which Saint Yves apprehended in marvellous vision and mystical and intellectual comprehension of form, number, colour, sound, with their planetary and zodiacal correspondences, as expressing the very Life of the Universe, the divine Word manifesting the Mystery of its Incarnation and speaking to men on the keyboard of three symbolic verbs which are like “the harmonics” of Its “fundamental Note”.
With the Archeometer one holds in one’s hand the universal key of the First Principles, the means of translation of the Mysteries and, therefore, the experimental verification of every practical problem, the adaptation to man and to his productions of that which, transcending them, must nevertheless come to live in them.
Applying it, one can determine beforehand what form corresponds to each idea, what pronunciation to each word, what colour to any object; what form, what sound, what colour, what number, what star, what vibration, what expression of that Word corresponds to this idea, to this sacred hymn, to this Gothic edifice [Sic: the Spanish prints “edilicio”], to the domestic object, to this race of men and to this government of ours…
p. 1313 And to awaken the sleeping Word was his torture. In reality, Saint Yves had already sought it in Synarchy. What did Synarchy seek to express?
What was it in its substantial content?
The living law, the underlying Truth that beats evident in the harmonic trinitarian organisation of social life; the Word in perpetual action of redemption and transfiguration; God hand in hand with Man and Nature in indestructible, eternal, loving and “conscious” collaboration, interpenetration, union; the transcendent and realising “ecstasy” of the total “Yoga” on the Plane of Spirit, of Soul and of Body singing the glory of Its Unity.
How to realise Synarchy? The “Missions” occupy themselves with it at length; twenty years more of sacrifice, and he discovers the Archeometer.
The Archeometer permits the practical realisation of Synarchy [Sic: the Spanish prints “laa Sinarquía”] in direct form, starting from the harmonisation of the individual with himself and with what surrounds him, provoking, through the appropriate ambience, the “necessary” eclosion of the Word in each being.
But let us note well that the realisation of these ideas transcends every other form of realisation, because it is “realisation par excellence”, the divinity living and evident even in the smallest particles of its being for the happiness and intelligence of Universal Life in its triple integrity of matter, animism and spirituality.
Having led the universal language back to its principles, Saint Yves undertakes the task of a new translation of the Genesis of Moses, with the key of the Archeometer in his hand: “The Theogony of the Patriarchs” takes place; the mysterious essence is condensed and perfumes the new language, which appears as distinct by its precision.
But when Saint Yves, in debt to Providence for its favours, in the days of his marriage and his apogee, had wished by an industrial venture not to receive but to produce wealth by himself, and derived some twenty different applications from marine algae, he had said, laying bare the basic plans of his whole construction, that “utility is the last word of wisdom”.
Consistent with his ideas, he will reveal nothing that cannot be applied for the good of men: to accept the Principles by the application and not the application by the principles.
Now it was a matter of making accessible the Mysteries of the Word in their real translation, so as to provoke the rapid individual and collective transformation in objects and beings, from the great to the small everyday things, while yet keeping the secret of the final Mystery of its spiritual Nature, of its infusion into the divine Body.
He applies the Archeometer to music and discovers a new musical system; with it he intones hymns of solemn grandeur in honour of the celestial powers. He takes out a patent of invention and creates a joint-stock company to exploit his productions. Because now, everywhere, the Splendour of the Word will shine: architectural and artistic works translated in their Unutterable Beauty, no less than any piece of furniture or object of common use.
p. 1414 lation; only the pure one, he who had burned away his dross through sorrow and through love, might see himself face to face with God… But Humanity did not yet deserve the gift of his sacrifice. And when he was beginning to apply his Archeometer of salvation, he was called to continue his work on other planes, until men should deserve the finest fruit of his labour.
On 5 February 1909, Saint Yves died at Versailles, carrying to the tomb — built according to the living key of the Archeometer, where his companion already awaited him — the secret of that same unfinished “Archeometer”, which reverent disciples would afterwards gather up and publish. The gigantic flight had been accomplished. Who will follow him? ………………………………………………………………………………………………...
MASTER: Forgive us if, in this desire to draw near to you, we betray a message we would wish to preserve in its purest expression. But the sweet gaze of your eyes receives us, the transparent beauty of your soul invites us to behold ourselves in its transfiguring mirror, and the light of your intellect and of your heart is bread of life for our hunger.
Woman — in your memory we love the reverence toward woman, who, we feel, must and can be the collaborator of man and not his enemy, desirable only for the yearnings of his complacency. You raised up, by the exaltation of your sweet companion, in the dignity of one woman, the beauty and transcendence of her mission, which is fulfilled in its integrity only, as in man, by the support, protection and loving interpenetration of the companion.
And this gift of your being returned upon you. Because she, living or dead, infusing herself into you — Wisdom where you were Power, heart where you were brain — being light in your soul, illumined your night and showed you the Sanctuary. The two poles united by love were reintegrated in the bosom of the Eternal.
Thanks for the spontaneous gift of your meditation, for the strength it gives us to contemplate your sufferings and to see you come forth from them purer and even more disposed to give. May your hands, which trembled vibrant in divine contacts, pour out their blessing upon all the brothers of the world.
And through your intermediation, prostrate fervently before IEVE- IESUS, we repeat, guided by your words, the prayer you taught us, setting a clasp of gold upon your ―Mission‖: ―Lord of Heaven and of Earth. Social God of humanity... Oceans of souls pray to you in the Invisible as I pray to you here, in the visible World. ―Bless their vows, bless their faith, bless their Love, bless their hope‖… IEVE – IESUS!
p. 1515 THE DEMIURGE (Continuation) By Palingenius In distinguishing Evil from Good, one creates them by this very distinction, for Good and Evil are not such except when one is opposed to the other, and, if there is no Evil, neither can one speak of Good in the common sense of this word, but only of Perfection.
It is, then, the fatal illusion of Dualism that realises Good and Evil and which, considering things from a particularised point of view, substitutes Multiplicity for Unity and thus encloses the beings over whom it exercises its power in the domain of confusion and of division. This domain is the empire of the Demiurge.
II What we have said on the distinction between Good and Evil makes it possible to understand the symbol of the original Fall, at least so far as these things can be expressed.
The fragmentation of the total Truth, or of the Word — for at bottom it is the same — a fragmentation that produces relativity, is identical with the segmentation of Adam Kadmon, whose separated particles constitute the Adam Protoplast, that is, the first former: the cause of this segmentation is Nahash, Egoism or the desire for individual existence.
This Nahash is not a cause exterior to man but is within him, at first in a potential state, and it does not become exterior except in the measure in which man himself exteriorises it; this instinct of separativity, by its very nature, which is that of provoking division, drives man to taste the fruit of the Tree of the Science of Good and Evil, that is, to create the distinction between Good and Evil.
Then his eyes open, because what was interior has become exterior in consequence of the separation that has been produced between beings; these are now clothed in forms that limit and define their individual existence, and thus man was the first former.
But he too finds himself then subjected to the conditions of that individual existence and clothed in a form or, according to the biblical expression, in a tunic of skin; he is enclosed in the domain of Good and Evil, in the empire of the Demiurge.
One sees from this exposition, which is moreover much abridged and incomplete, that in reality the Demiurge is not a power exterior to man; it is, in principle, nothing but the will of man insofar as it realises the distinction between Good and Evil.
But afterwards man, limited as an individual being by this will which is his own, considers it as something external to himself, and thus it becomes distinct from him; still more, as it opposes the efforts he makes to leave the domain in which he has enclosed himself, he considers it a hostile power and calls it Satan or the Adversary.
Let us note, moreover, that this Adversary, which we ourselves have created and which we create at every instant — for this must not be considered as having taken place at a determined epoch — that this Adversary, we say, is not evil in itself, but is only the assemblage of all that is contrary to us.
From a more general point of view, the Demiurge, become a distinct power and considered as such, is the Prince of this World of whom the Gospel of John speaks; thus too he is not, properly speaking, either good or evil or, rather, he is the one and the other, since he contains within himself Good and Evil. His domain is considered as the Lower World, opposing itself to the Higher World or to the principial Universe, from which it has been
p. 1616 separated. But one must take care to note that this separation is never absolutely real; it is real only in the measure in which we realise it, because that Lower World is contained in a potential state in the principial Universe, and it is evident that no part can really leave the whole.
This, moreover, prevents the fall from continuing indefinitely; but this is only a wholly symbolic expression, and the depth of the fall simply measures the degree to which the separation has been realised.
With this restriction, the Demiurge opposes himself to Adam Kadmon or to the principial Humanity, manifestation of the Word, but only as a reflection, because he is not an emanation and does not exist by himself; which is represented by the figure of the two old men of the Zohar and also by the two opposed triangles of the Seal of Solomon.
We are thus led to consider the Demiurge as a tenebrous and inverted reflection of Being, for he can be nothing else, in reality. He is not, then, a Being; but, according to what we have said before, he can be considered as the collectivity of beings in the measure in which they are distinct or, if one prefers, while they have an individual existence.
We are distinct beings while we create the distinction, which does not exist except so far as we create it; while we create this distinction we are elements of the Demiurge, and while we are distinct beings we belong to the domain of that same Demiurge, which we call Creation.
All the elements of Creation, that is, the creatures, are, then, contained in the Demiurge himself and, in effect, he can draw them only from himself, since creation ex nihilo is impossible.
Considered as Creator, the Demiurge produces, first, division, and is not at all really distinct from it, because he exists only on condition that division itself exist; then, as division is the origin of individual existence and as this is defined by form, the Demiurge must be considered as a former and, then, he is identical with the Adam Protoplast, as we saw.
One can say further that the Demiurge creates Matter, understanding by this word the primordial chaos which is the common reservoir of all forms; then he organises that chaotic and tenebrous Matter in which confusion reigns, bringing forth from it the multiple forms whose assemblage constitutes Creation. Must we now say that this Operation is imperfect?
It cannot, certainly, be considered perfect; but if we consider it from the universal point of view, it is only one of the constitutive elements of total Perfection. It is imperfect while we consider it analytically as separated from the Principle, that is, in the very measure in which it belongs to the domain of the Demiurge; but if the imperfect is only an element of the Perfect, it is not truly imperfect.
From this it results that, in reality, the Demiurge and his domain do not exist from the universal point of view, just as the distinction between Good and Evil does not exist.
From this it also results that, from the same point of view, Matter does not exist; the material appearance is only illusion — from which one must not conclude, on the other hand, that the beings which have that appearance do not exist, because, in that case, one would fall into another illusion, which is that of an exaggerated and ill-understood Idealism. If Matter does not exist, then the distinction between Spirit and Matter disappears.
p. 1717 Whether one would define it by thought or in some other manner, it is always by a form that one seeks to define it, and then it is no longer Spirit. In reality, the universal Spirit is Being, and not this or that particular being. It is the Principle of all beings and, consequently, contains them all.
That is why all is Spirit. When man arrives at the real knowledge of this truth, he identifies himself and all things with the universal Spirit and, then, every distinction disappears for him, and he contemplates all things as being within himself and no longer as external, for illusion vanishes before Truth as shadow before the sun.
Thus, by this knowledge, man releases himself from the bonds of Matter and of individual existence; he is no longer subject to the dominion of the Prince of this World; he belongs no more to the Empire of the Demiurge. (To be continued). COSMIC INFLUENCES AND REACTIONS OF LIVING BEINGS [Sic: the Spanish prints “SERFS” for “SERES”] (Continuation) Influence of colours. — Chromotherapy By Pitágoras S. I.
Larvaron has also observed that seeds which react to yellow give more vigorous plants than those which react to orange. It has been observed, further, that seeds of green beans, carrots, lettuces and beets germinated three times more rapidly than in full daylight.
All these experiments show how certain colours act by accelerating the germination and growth of certain plants, that is, by reinforcing, with their wavelength, those of the seeds and plants. But they also show that these actions, which shorten the normal period of germination and growth, are unnatural because, once the artificial conditions of existence have ceased, the reaction (withering) makes itself felt with the same and proportional force.
The experiments carried out on minerals are very scarce. Henri Mager has observed that the search of the radiotellurists is facilitated if rods of different colours are employed according to the metal one wishes to seek. Thus, for example, red facilitates the search for iron, which does not surprise us because we know that this metal corresponds, in astrology, to red and to the planet Mars.
As for monocellular beings, Engelmann and Winograds had already carried out experiments on bacteria, protozoa and algae.
Duclaux, repeating those experiments, found that, for those beings, the optimum of activity manifests between red and green; it is heightened at first and then ceases slowly between red and infrared; that in indigo, violet and ultraviolet the activity diminishes little by little until ceasing completely owing to the destruction of those beings, and that in yellow and green a durable equilibrium is noted.
As for the experiments on animals, we know that Paul Bert had observed that small crustaceans called Dalnies grouped themselves prevalently in the yellow and green regions. More recently, other experiments made on flies enclosed in small boxes in which there were compartments of various colours have demonstrated
p. 1818 how those flies carefully avoided settling in the compartment of blue colour. Regnault made use of this discovery with success, in 1911, preserving from the flies, in the hospital of Saint Mandrier, those wounded in the explosion of the battleship Liberté, by painting blue the walls of the room where the patients were. For the frog, on the contrary, Torelle has found that the zone they prefer is between red and blue.
A notable fact, as regards experimentation on men, is the one Abrams observed on placing a red glass before one eye of a person facing West and standing on aluminium plates connected to earth. Observing the pulsations of the radial arteries at both wrists, he observed that the pulsations of the radial on the same side as the eye before which the red glass stood were modified, while those of the other radial continued normal.
For woman, the reaction was inverse, which must almost certainly be in relation with the difference of polarity existing between the two sexes.
An English physician observed that if the seven colours of the spectrum are presented successively to a person, it is noted that the pulse reacts differently for each colour and that it quickens when a colour is presented whose wavelength provokes perturbations in the characteristic wavelength of the person [Sic: the Spanish prints “de 1a persona”, with a numeral].
Giuseppe Calligaris, professor of neuropathology at the University of Rome, found experimentally, during long studies pursued with admirable constancy on the “linear chains of the body and of the spirit”, various physical and metapsychical results, either due to the influence of a colour, or due to the stimulation of a cutaneous plaque that causes colours to be perceived.
In consideration of the enormous importance of those experiments, we shall relate some: 1) There exists a general cutaneous field which, if illuminated with yellow light, makes one see what is behind one’s own body.
This cutaneous field is of rectangular form and is found on the anterior surface of the left shoulder, between the mammillary line and the upward prolongation of the anterior axillary line; and between an upper plane passing two transverse fingers below the course of the lateral line of the body, on the shoulder, from the acromio-clavicular articulation, and a lower plane passing 3 cm. above the fold of the armpit.
If the left pectoral region and the shoulder are covered with a white cloth, leaving free the cutaneous field described, and clear yellow light coming from any luminous source is projected upon it, the subject is induced to perform automatically all his habitual gestures, sees the contours of things as if blurred, and presents an affirmative tic of the head.
After some minutes of irradiation of the field with the colour, the subject sees an object or a person situated behind his back at the distance of one metre, or also sees the first object situated in a straight line behind him up to the distance of 10 metres. The experiment gives the same result on applying a rectangle of yellow paper upon the cutaneous field instead of illuminating it with light of the same colour. (G, Calligaris.
p. 1919 3) If a subject who is facing another looks for 15 to 20 minutes at a mixture of small violet spots on a red ground, at a distance of 40 to 50 cms., and then closes his eyes, he may have visions, fragmentary or complete, whether of the surface of the body or of the internal organs of the other subject facing him.
If the subject having the stereoscopic vision looks at small dark grey spots on a light green ground, the vision disappears. (op. cit. p. 303). We could continue the relation of other experiments, but it is necessary to set a limit to our exposition. To synthesise the results reached so far, we may say: 1) The intensity of action of the colour increases with the increase of the wavelength.
2) A body upon which a ray of white light falls presents itself to us with a certain colour which is the resultant: a) Of the reflected rays. b) Of the absorbed rays. c) Of the neutralised rays. 3) Just as for sounds and odours, so too for colours there is harmony when the wavelength is the same and disharmony when it is different. 4) The greater the wavelength, the greater the thermal effect.
5) The greater the thermal effect, the lesser the chemical effect. 6) For each being (mineral, vegetable, animal, human) there is a colour whose influence determines an optimum of vital activity and a colour whose influence determines a minimum of vital activity which can reach even to death. 7) The greater the wavelength of the colour, the greater its resting and tonifying action upon tired beings.
8) The optimum of life for mineral beings is, in general, violet. 9) The optimum of life for vegetable beings is, in general, green. 10) The optimum of life for animal beings and man is, in general, red.
11) The colour having least influence on the growth of vegetables is yellow. 12) Unilateral chromatic action provokes inequality of growth between the side where this action is exercised and the opposite side. 13) Every physical colour, that is, of material origin, acts upon the physical body.
14) Every astral colour, that is, of astral origin, acts upon the astral body. 15) Every mental colour, that is, of mental origin, acts upon the mental body. 16) Every action of colour upon the physical body has repercussions upon the astral and mental bodies.
17) Every action of colour upon the astral body has repercussions upon the physical and mental bodies. 18) Every action of colour upon the mental body has repercussions upon the physical and astral bodies. 19) For each being there exists a personal vibration which is the resultant of the play of the vibrations of the organs and cells.
To each personal vibration corresponds a colour. 20) The colour that acts in resonance with the colour of the personal vibration is the maximum colour of therapeutic action, and the one that acts in dissonance is the maximum colour of pathogenic action. (To be continued)
p. 2020 A VISIT TO THE POET ÁNGEL FALCO By Maya S. I. Illumined by the ardent light of a day of sun he came to us, like a new Zarathustra who, descending from the mountain, brings us the message of the Idea; a message of immense value, for it is written by the experience of his own life.
And this life is truly extraordinary, full of strength, of courage, of beauty and of poetry; a torrent of the eternal wellspring which, allaying the aridity of thirsting souls, vivifies hope and kindles faith.
His soul, purified by sorrow, is burnished and fortified by the aroma of the celestial spirit; a spirit that whispers in the Poet’s ear the secret of the stone, of the wood, of the flower, of the bee in her nuptial flight, of the wind, of the waves of the sea, of the reddish ray of dawn and of the golden silence of twilight...
His speech, easy, magnetic, musical, is full of harmony and charm like the lands he has travelled, the landscapes admired and the souls sounded and understood in the secret of the heart.
His thought is like a tropical flower of most beautiful colours, radiating perfume, sound, light and transmuting force through his word — lyrical, deep, graphic, wrapped in forms full of life, of dream and of Truth, in the evocation of distant voyages and of the sailing of his life over the prodigious waters of supreme Beauty, of human sorrow and of universal Love. Ángel Falco!
You were born loving liberty and, as your name symbolises, you brought wings as powerful as they are luminous. Wings that allowed you the descent to feel and understand all that is human, hell and heaven, hatred and love, and that had the strength to raise you far above everything vulgar and mean, in a flight so high that it no longer casts a shadow upon the earth.
And so you have lived and live, ever young, without calculation and without fear; and, like children, without prejudices and without vanity, which allows you to be truly virtuous.
You have been able to conquer your little “I”, sublimating desires and passions, and, faithful to yourself, you are free, you have found yourself in your true being, you are the mystic who awakens in and through the realised man; you are something most rare in the West; you are the man who identifies himself with the Idea whose exposition is the inspired song of your own life, which mingles and rises with the song of the birds at their awakening, with the song of the flowers in their loving, with the hymn of the waves and with the Heaven in prayer… Song of liberty! Song of Love! Song of Eternity!
p. 2121 ―IN DHYANA‖ (To the beloved V: H: Vayuananda and Isis, on completing six months since my initiation into the Path, toward which they led me, with pure heart.) — — — — by Dhyána A M.
My soul is in the bow, and the arrow does not leap; and there is a wound in the breast, and there is sobbing in my soul. and there is a beating of wings that awakens my longings, my infinite longings to love and be loved; and the bow is drawn and the arrow does not leap, and the quiver smiles at me with its closed mouth. It is the last arrow, my last hope.
While I wait, I make phantoms of my longings, wishing... and not wishing to see the weapon loosed. Is not waiting, perhaps, a growing of the soul?
And in this heroic struggle, now with Venus, now in Dhyâna, my matter and my spirit go on exhausting Karma, and Scorpion borne into the air by eagles, my “i”, struggles terribly with its “I” that draws it upward. that masters it, conquers it, and toward Itself sweeps it away; and in a flash of lights and warm flarings, it loses form, substance, enlarges its limits, and on reaching the height, weightless between two wings, understands, satisfied, its triumph over Karma.
Thus I live my hours transmuting my longings; a play of light and shadow that scourges my soul and teaches it the way to conquer Maya. If my dream is fulfilled, this beating of wings will tell me nothing more, and in the bow my soul will smile, illumined .

EL VENERABLE MAESTRO
SAINT-YVES D’ALVEYDRE

libre interiormente. Quizás las luchas externas, del gran combate interno eran reflejo;

“asentimiento” de la voluntad (ESPIRITU);

acción perpetua de redención y transfiguración; Dios de la mano del Hombre y la Naturaleza en indestructible, eterna, amorosa y “consciente” colaboración, interpenetración, unión;

broche do oro a Tu ―Misión‖:

VIVIENTES
(Continuación)
Influencia de los colores. — Cromoterapia
Por Pitágoras S. I.

3)
Si
un
sujeto
que
se
encuentra
frente
a
otro,
mira
frente a él.
límite a nuestra exposición.

Por Maya S. I.
potentes cuanto luminosas alas.

por Dhyána A M.
Tengo el alma en el arco,
y la flecha no salta;
y hay herida en el pecho,
y hay sollozo en mi alma.
y hay un batir de alas
que despierta mis ansias,
mis ansias infinitas
de amar y ser amada;
y el arco está tendido
y la flecha no salta,
y el carcaj me sonríe
por su boca cerrada.
Es la última flecha,
mi última esperanza.
Mientras espero, creo
fantasmas a mis ansias,
queriendo... y no queriendo
ver disparada el arma.
Acaso, el esperar,
no es un crecer del alma?
Y en esta lucha heroica,
ya con Venus, o en Dhyâna
mi materia y mi espíritu
van agotando Karma,
y Escorpión arrastrado
a los aires por águilas
mi yo, lucha terrible
con su Yo que lo arrastra.
que lo puede, lo vence,
y hacia Él lo arrebata;
y en un lampo de luces
y tibias llamaradas,
pierde forma, sustancia,
sus limites agranda
y al llegar a lo alto
liviana entre dos alas,
comprende satisfecho,
su triunfo sobre Karma.
Así vivo mis horas
transmutando mis ansias;
juego de luz y sombra
que flagela mi alma
y le enseña el camino
para vencer a Maya.
Si mi sueño se cumple,
este batir de alas,
ya no me dirá nada,
y en el arco mi alma,
sonreirá iluminada
.
