p. 4THE CONJUNCTION OF JUPITER, NEPTUNE, SUN AND MERCURY. By Lorelair S. I.
In June 1944 (see La Iniciación of September of the same year) we explained the march of future events up to September-October 1945, through an analysis of the planetary vibration between Saturn and Neptune and its effects upon the Earth and individual beings — showing how that influence, which reached its maximum force from January to the end of April, was going to cause a period of chaotic, dark and painful situations throughout the world, social and collective as well as individual.
To the question regarding the end of the war, we answered that only from the end of September to October of this year onward could we foresee a state of peace and harmony. That forecast was based on the conjunction of Jupiter, Neptune, Sun and Mercury from the end of September to the beginning of October, and of Jupiter-Venus on 30 October — all this in the sign of Libra (the Balance).
In the analysis of these vibrations there exists no interest or preoccupation in predicting what agreements, conferences and treaties may be foreseen during the said period — but rather the desire to make clear how each of us, within his radius of action, must collaborate, so that the beautiful constellation may extend its magnificent irradiation of goodwill, forgiveness and harmony over all humanity.
In previous articles we have compared Astrology to the phenomenon of radio, adding then that the human being is the most perfected radio apparatus, capable of capturing and irradiating the cosmic vibration emanating from the great broadcasting stations of the firmament — advising, of course, that this apparatus be checked and revised so as to avoid short-circuits in periods of tempest (what judicial Astrology calls maleficent planetary action, but which must be merely human imperfection, incapable as yet of capturing or syntonising a determinate vibration).
Now, meanwhile, we must appeal to all those who understand the importance of the present moment and desire to collaborate in human progress — scientific, religious or philosophical — that they prepare, more than ever, themselves and all those within their reach: making their hearts a pure and perfect plate on which the harmonies of Jupiter, Neptune, Sun and Mercury, and of Jupiter and Venus in Libra, can engrave themselves — in such a way that the effect be not merely passing, but make our hearts radiate constantly Forgiveness, Harmony, Love and Peace.
At no time has man stood so thoughtful and surprised before the discoveries of his brain, understanding that he stands between a precipice and the ascent of a luminous road; but cerebral and scientific evolution can only cause the fall into the abyss if it is not accompanied and illumined by sentimental and spiritual evolution.
The planetary influences will help humanity awaken in its conscience the spiritual virtues and, therefore, all our efforts must, in those days, be directed in that sense: softening, forgiving, harmonising — loving, in short. The chaotic vibrations · 4
p. 5of times past have put almost all beings to the test, and the Jupiter-Neptune vibration begins to act, drawing them together that they may realise Fraternity and Universal Love. [Sic: the Spanish prints yodos, iodines, in the second word.] The spiritualists understand that it depends on the collaboration of each one of us that the harmonious planetary vibration — engraving itself on our hearts — become a force and power creative of a new era of understanding and harmony.
We must not keep ourselves inert, awaiting external events: each of us has the duty to begin within himself the work of renovation, tearing from his heart the last roots that may still remain of past experiences — roots of pain, of anguish, of rancour. Nor must he permit feelings of defeat or of victory. Only one word must reign: PEACE!
And thus we shall become the perfect plates on which the harmonies of the stars can engrave themselves.
The conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune — the two agents of the sign of Pisces which emanate Universal Love, symbol of the Christian doctrine of Love of one's neighbour — in the sign of Libra, which is Equilibrium, Harmony, Justice and Love, begins to act from mid-August to the beginning of November, being strongest at the end of September, when the Sun and Mercury transit in the same degree of the conjunction.
It will be the moment when the pacific and harmonious vibration (Jupiter-Neptune) begins to manifest itself in spirits and upon the intellect, causing new life and projects — from leaders and governments to commerce, traffic, publications, contracts, etc. — thus giving beginning to a new epoch.
On 30 October, the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus in Libra will be visible one hour before sunrise, near the horizon; and on 2 and 3 November the conjunction of the Moon will take place.
If all humanity knew how to capture and consciously syntonise the harmony of the interchange of the planetary vibration with the terrestrial atmosphere, it would fall on its knees before the Universal Divine Beauty, and it would not then be difficult for it to realise the Kingdom of Christ on Earth.
Nevertheless, let us not wait for that; let us begin with ourselves — you and I — in daily life, a new existence of understanding, keeping ever present the words of the Master: Love one another! · 5
p. 6Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya, S. I. THE INFLUENCE OF THE PLANETS IN EACH HOUSE.
We have already seen the influences of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the 12 houses of the figure. Let us now see those of the SUN (The giver of life). THE SUN IN THE FIRST HOUSE indicates a generous character, magnanimous, honest and noble.
In the fire signs it adds to these qualities audacity, energy, a little pride and vivacity. In the earth signs it gives perseverance and stubbornness. In the air signs it gives a just character and love of the arts and sciences.
But in the water signs it strips the person of all these fine qualities and makes him proud, boastful and dissipated. The Sun in this house, well aspected, increases the vitality of the rising sign. If it is dignified and in good aspect with the Moon, it presages long life, riches and prosperity — unless it is afflicted by bad aspects or situated in Libra or Aquarius.
In configuration with Mars it indicates that the person will have some love affair at 19 years of age. Bad aspects with Neptune, Uranus, Saturn or Mars announce accidents and bad health, because they weaken the vitality. The bad aspects also indicate deaths of relatives, misfortunes and loss of friends or of position.
THE SUN IN THE SECOND HOUSE grants many gains and money, which the person will dissipate wildly. But with the good aspects of Jupiter or Venus, the person will keep his fortune and increase it considerably. THE SUN IN THE THIRD HOUSE gives a firm and determined character, jovial and observant.
It gives a scientific inclination and inspires the love of letters and of the fine arts. If it is found situated in common or water signs, it presages many removals and small journeys. In other signs it makes the person sedentary and fond of remaining at home.
Being well placed, it can indicate municipal offices. THE SUN IN THE FOURTH HOUSE is not favourable until the last part of life. [Sic: the Spanish prints ida, for vida.] It prognosticates inheritances of lands or buildings, and a good fortune toward the end of life. It also presages success and well-being for the person's father.
THE SUN IN THE FIFTH HOUSE announces few children, and is a decidedly unfortunate position during their gestation — especially if the fire sign, Leo, is on the cusp. If it is found in water signs, the children will be weak and sickly, dying soon — unless the Sun receives a good aspect from the Moon, Jupiter or Venus.
It inclines to love-affairs, to pleasures, to luxury and to frivolities, favouring all these things — as also education and publications — and affording fortune in the exploitation of places of pleasure. [Sic: the Spanish prints placeros.] THE SUN IN THE SIXTH HOUSE signifies bad health and illnesses — characterised by the zodiacal sign in which it is situated — which will be long and · 6
p. 7chronic. It gives success in medicine and in any activity as employee or employer — but in this last case he will have displeasures with his subordinates. THE SUN IN THE SEVENTH HOUSE helps toward success and a better position.
It promises a high public function, successes after marriage, and a virtuous spouse of good family — according to how the sun is placed and aspected. It affords honest partners. In the case of judicial litigation, it predisposes the judges toward a favourable result.
THE SUN IN THE EIGHTH HOUSE affords goods of fortune by marriage or by inheritances, with a tendency to squandering. It is extremely harmful to vitality, and often produces a premature death. If it is afflicted by bad aspects of Mars, and on the cusp of this house stands Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn — signs called violent — it announces a violent death.
It also indicates the death of the father or of the spouse, or serious danger to life toward the middle of the existence. THE SUN IN THE NINTH HOUSE gives elevated ideals, a just character, honest, generous, tolerant, kindly and religious, with tendencies to reach some high ecclesiastical or judicial position — or else to make a fortune by transoceanic voyages, if it is situated in a water sign.
THE SUN IN THE TENTH HOUSE is one of the surest positions for success in life. [Sic: the printed heading reads DÉC1MA, with a numeral.] It affords the help of highly placed persons and accords honours, important posts, consideration, profits and fortune. It also indicates benefits for the person's mother. THE SUN IN THE ELEVENTH HOUSE affords good and powerful friends.
If it is dignified, it brings social successes. THE SUN IN THE TWELFTH HOUSE, if it is badly placed, presages powerful enemies, long illnesses, many reverses and — if it is much afflicted by aspects — threat of prison, and capital sentence where that exists. But being well placed, and situated near the Ascendant, it removes obstacles and helps toward the attainment of success and fortune.
It also indicates success in a task away from contact with the public, or related to hospitals, sanatoria or prisons; or it may also bring a calm and retired life. It also inclines toward occultism. _________ The most disadvantageous house for the Sun is the 6th.
The Sun influences with great force when it is found in the 1st, 9th and 10th house. [Sic: the ten is printed with a letter ell.] Those who are born with a great influence of the Sun, or who have this star in the Ascendant or as regent of the horoscope, well placed, will possess love of beautiful actions, of power or dominion, and will have probabilities of obtaining an illustrious renown. · 7
p. 8DESIRE. We all know that life manifests itself as desire, or will. All our acts are the result of a desire.
It is desire that determines all our movements, internal or external. The primary instincts are desire and, in a more elevated degree, so too are emotions and thoughts. The acquisition of riches, the desire for power and success, etc. — all is fruit of the desire that belongs to the inferior SELF.
With material acquisitions the Self, or personality, grows larger. With detachment the higher Self manifests itself as a spiritual being. Through pleasurable experiences, or those of pain, and all their aspects of vices and virtues, desire is transformed little by little into passion, emotion and sentiment.
If we channel the results of desire we shall see that they are ephemeral, that they are part of the petty Self; then something arises from within us that guides our desire toward new visions, with new possibilities.
The instincts and emotions we no longer consider fundamental; we begin to doubt; problems arise that before were not even suspected; the struggle, from external, becomes internal and… this is the moment when a new entity appears in us. We feel that there is something more in us. We do not yet realise that we are in the presence of the Real Man.
The struggle intensifies, and one of the two contenders must be reduced. It is a moment of which Mabel Collins, in her book "Light on the Path", says: "Let the warrior fight in thee". Desire is more active as it rises.
When the Higher SELF acts, its appetite is refined; man uses his intelligence in a critical, firm and serene sense, and can unbind himself, detach himself, from the slavery of desire. Man needs to know how to distinguish well the difference between the desire of the emotions and the pure action in which all the desire-force has been consummated. Desire always manifests itself in the form of acquisition.
True detachment consists in retaining what is essential in man; and the essential is TO WILL TO KNOW, TO WILL TO KEEP SILENT, TO WILL TO DARE, TO WILL TO WILL. La Plata. __________ ASTRAL PLANE. Depression and anger are two doors through which the disturbing influences penetrate; and when this occurs there is danger that the germs of illnesses penetrate our body.
Anxieties disturb our nervous system. We are told to beware of everyone who stains his soul with unhealthy passions and desires, because he infects all around him. · 8
p. 9If we do not transmute the inferior into superior, the suffering it will cause in our wounded personality will be ever greater, and this will increase our degeneration and impurity until we remain enslaved by the vices and gross passions, which will put an end to all our possibilities of advancement.
The Astral body is built by its prisons. [Sic: the Spanish prints lo construye las prisiones; the sentence is defective as printed.] The purer the desire-material, the purer will our dense body be. If, in spite of discomforts, an equanimous temperament is cultivated, our artistic or literary tastes will make us engender noble sentiments and exquisite pure emotions in the desire body.
The cultivation of the higher sentiments is the food of our vehicles. Sentiments for loving, intelligence for understanding, and will to unite both and give them life in action. The desire body acts through the cerebro-spinal system.
The occultist who has turned into a bundle of nerves has mistaken the road at some point of the journey... The Astral world is the illusory world — but real for him who creates it; and often man is the victim of that plane created by himself. The known illnesses of that plane are: hallucinations, obsession, fixed ideas, etc. It is said that the new era will bring mental disturbances.
Persons dominated by the desire world are more easily made prey of these influences. When persons lose control — or those who grow excited and are commonly called nervous — in reality those disequilibria are produced by the foreign forces that act upon the nervous system. Gross vibrations widen the astral channels, and through them the foreign forces penetrate the body.
On the other hand, subtle vibrations open new intellectual and emotional roads that enrich the being. The discipline of the Path serves to define the character — that is, to master the emotions and desires. All that the Instructors can do in the physical world is to prepare the candidate.
The Instructor, when he gives the initiation, stimulates the internal part, awakens the subtler emotions and sentiments. These vibrations affect in their turn the astral and mental bodies, with the consequent effect on the physical, giving the disciple equilibrium and peace. For our meditation we are told: "The Initiator is not a human Being, and the Path is the perfect way of living".
One of the means of purifying the Astral and mental body is to steep oneself lovingly in the following practices, putting them into action: TO REVERENCE SACRED THINGS AND TO RENDER DISINTERESTED SERVICE TO OTHERS. PEACE TO ALL BEINGS · 9
p. 10Suddha Dharma Mandalam. COMMENTARY ON THE BHAGAVAD GITA BASHYA, by Hamsa Yogui. Explanatory synthesis by the Guru Swami Subramanianda.
Castilian version by G. Bruno. We shall continue treating Hamsa Yogui's introduction to the Gita, which has just been published.
It begins with three verses by way of invocation: In the first, Hamsa Yogui offers his praises to Narayana, Nara, Narottama Sarasvati and Vyasa, in the style of those who begin the study of the Mahabharata, since by tradition they must do so. As the Gita forms part of the Great Epic Poem, such praises were de rigueur.
In the second verse the salutations are offered to Krishna and Arjuna, who are described as descendants of Narayana and Nara for the protection and salvation of the World. (Nara Narayanajjathow Jagatasslitayestithow). In describing the descent of Krishna and Arjuna, proceeding from Narayana and Nara respectively, Hamsa Yogui simply follows the style of the Mahabharata, where the former are identified with the latter.
He points out in this manner the criterion that both Krishna and Arjuna were members of the SPIRITUAL HIERARCHY OF THE WORLD — the Supreme Body of "Adhikara Purushas", in the words of the Hindu scriptures — at whose head is found Bhagavan Narayana.
Hamsa Yogui points out, further, that those two messengers of the exalted Spiritual Fraternity — invisible Guardians of our globe — manifested themselves at the close of a great cycle in order to prepare the way for ages to come, taking human bodies solely for the fulfilment of their mission.
Evidently, both were protected during their labour on Earth by powerful spiritual forces, whose grandeur escapes the comprehension of mortals and for whose description we find no fitting language. · 10
p. 11Arjuna, in the fulfilment of his mission, appears confused and disheartened, and his doubts and difficulties are evidently expressed in the course of the colloquy by his own questions and reasonings.
The explanation of this — according to the criterion sustained by Hamsa Yogui — is that Arjuna was playing the part that fell to him, and expressed the feelings of Humanity in the present state of its evolution: which made it necessary to obtain from the very lips of the Avatar the eternal truths that were, once more, to be proclaimed for the guidance and support of men.
In the third and last verse of the invocation, Hamsa Yogui offers his praises to the Maharshis, to the Kumara and to other venerable predecessors (Purvaryamscha). Frequently he cites, among these last, the writings of Gobbila and of Narada, as adjuncts to those of the Kumara, in support of his conclusions and arguments.
These predecessors — it appears — are cited as Prachina Hamsas; this last word evidently refers to certain passages of the Mahabharata, which sets in evidence the existence of an officiant charged with spreading the knowledge of the essential identity of the Divine Spirit with the human: AHAMSA, "I AM THAT".
It is unnecessary to observe that this passage of the Mahabharata clearly suggests that Humanity always had need of spiritual Guides charged exclusively with keeping alive in its memory the fact that the spirit of man is a spark of the Divinity, as Krishna expresses in one of the verses of the Gita (Mamaivanso). [Sic: the Spanish prints ano, for que.] After the invocation, Hamsa Yogui proceeds to consider the first of the seven principal points over which all the matter of the introduction runs.
This point is denominated "Gitavatara Sangati" — that is, The Origin and History of the Gita. Thus, in treating of that origin, the author begins by asking why, on the eve of the combat of Kurukshetra, the Maharshi Vyasa visits the blind King, Chief of the Kurus.
He answers this pertinent question with affirmations very instructive for students of the Sacred Science, arguing that Vyasa's visit was due to two motives: In the first place, he was moved by his compassion toward the King, his own son, sunk in deep sorrow before the imminence of the fratricidal struggle, from which would result the annihilation of his own sons, his relatives and multiple friends. [Sic: the Spanish prints composición, for compasión.] In the second place — and most important — it consisted in the Maharshi's desire to fulfil before the King the duty incumbent on him, in his character of first among the spiritual Masters of the World — a duty enunciated in the verse of the Gita that begins with the words TAT VIDDHI, which Hamsa Yogui cites and on which he supports himself. · 11
p. 12It is a very peculiar characteristic of Hamsa Yogui to reinforce his suggestions and arguments as much as possible — basing himself on the authority of the Gita and, on occasion, on references from the Anu Gita, in accordance with the known rule of interpretation which establishes that a determinate meaning can be correctly understood by reason of its analogy with similar cases appearing elsewhere.
The verse in question — observes Hamsa Yogui — enunciates the great principles that govern the relations existing between the spiritual Master and the disciple, and establishes as the duty of the former to impart to the latter the knowledge of Brahma Vidya, preparing them for the conquest of liberation.
In accord with this verse, then, Hamsa Yogui shows us that the disciple is comprised within the three following denominations: 1.º) It comprehends those involved in the term "PARI PRASNENA", corresponding to the aspirants who, through study, inquiry and reflection, are in the state of developing their discrimination between the transitory and the permanent, the illusory and the real.
2.º) It comprehends the disciples identified by the term "PRANI PATENA" — that is, those who surrender to their Master, confiding in their Sraddha, or faith in his wisdom, which is to guide them surely up the steep slope "AS NARROW AND KEEN AS THE EDGE OF A RAZOR" — as the Upanishads said — a sure guide exempt from errors and a powerful help for the disciple in what touches the development of a sturdy will, full of celestial knowledge, whose pedestal is raised on an infinite love professed by the Master: who without doubt will make him capable of discovering "The lamp of Wisdom"1 (Jnana Dipa), hidden in the most recondite part of himself2 (Atma Stham), by the light of his own conscious perception (Viveka)3 — to protect him from the weak glow of his passions, transmuting these into pure love and austerity (Vairagya and Tapas); and finally, through concentrated contemplation (nitya pravritta aikagrya dhyana), quickens the brilliant flame of direct cognition and, thereby, his identification with the SELF (Samyak darshanabhas).
3.º) Finally, to this grade answer the disciples denominated by the word "Sevaya", or service. [Sic: the Spanish prints IRANI PATENA at the second term.] They are those who have proved that the true remedy against the great obstacle to spiritual progress — Swartha, or self-isolation — is found in the practice of Sarvartha, or Universalism; and they give themselves with full heart to the service of their brothers, which service is offered to the Masters, who have as emblem a single beloved word: HUMANITY.
1 HAMSA YOGUI refers to persons who have not attained the power of such discrimination, and points out that they have very little development to be in a condition to have a Spiritual Master. 2 The spirit of reverence and humility that characterises this class of disciples we find justly expressed when they are described approaching the Master with extended arms and visible testimonies of devotion.
p. 13Hamsa Yogui then explains that the spiritual Masters of elevated rank, described in the verse as Jnanis and Tatvadarshis4, do not directly undertake the preparation of the aspirants of the first grade mentioned above, but rather assign this duty to Initiates of rank inferior to them. [Sic: the Spanish prints Inamis and Tatvodarshis.] This explains why the blind King was placed under the tutelage of Sanjaya.
In sum, we can summarise this fact in the following form: The conversations between the King and Vyasa on the occasion of the latter's visit show us simply that the King had made true efforts to reach the meaning of the teachings existing in the Scripture, and that he possessed intellectual conditions and competence for spiritual training.
But it was also evident that he was under the influence of his self-worshipping isolation — Swartha — which prevented his being taken under the direct supervision of Vyasa.
In consequence of that state, it was necessary to consider the King in the condition of a disciple of the lower class, in the charge of an initiate of the rank of Sanjaya — who, through the grace granted by Vyasa, had acquired not only complete efficiency in the Sastric science and in the development of the powers of clairvoyance and clairaudience, but had also attained Union with the Divinity5.
After answering the King's multiple questions, the Maharshi prepared to depart — not before the former had begged him to grant him the grace of the final knowledge that would free him from illusions and assure him the "Param Santi", that is, "THE PEACE THAT PASSETH ALL UNDERSTANDING". [Sic: the Spanish prints DE TODA COMPRENSIÓN.] Vyasa replied that his ardent desires would be fulfilled by Sanjaya, whose elevated knowledge and virtues he praised.
He also promised to do all he could for the salvation of the erring Kurus and their followers, because it grieved him to see them engaged in an unjust war that was fatally to lead them to inevitable consequences. [Sic: the Spanish prints salvaci6n, with a numeral.] The Yogi's disquisition on what happened between the King and Sanjaya, after Vyasa had departed, we can summarise thus: Sanjaya took advantage of the King's questions concerning the causes of the conflict for the conquest of earthly power, and proceeded with a long and brilliant exposition of the multiple matters — vital and important — for one who found himself in a position such as the King's.
He explained to him the constitution of the World and other things related to the visible Cosmos — which is, so to say, the raiment of the Divinity immanent in each of its atoms. 4 Masters of Wisdom and Seers, Knowers of the Truth. 5 This signifying almost Omniscience by means of YOGA. · 13
p. 14He also explained to him the fact that the Cosmos is impelled by the power of the Divinity (Sakti) in its two aspects, namely: 1.º) APARAPRAKRITI, matter, or its form aspect.
2.°) PARAPRAKRITI, or life aspect. [Sic: the Spanish prints os and sabor on this page.] He proceeds then to explain how to understand those aspects of the Divinity's power in the light of the famous Gayatri symbol, so fully described in the Scripture; and, finally, he pointed out to him the ineffable nature of Brahman, which transcends human comprehension.
In the course of his conversation with the King, Sanjaya pointed out to him that the cause of the Kurus, advocated by his son, would be hard beaten owing to its unjust postulates, and that victory would crown the Pandavas, who were defending a just cause. Krishna — said he — was giving fulfilment to the Plan of Providence for the progress of the World, and the war constituted an incident already foreseen.
The Great Beings who help and impel the consummation of that Plan act with impartiality — said Sanjaya — urging the King to reconcile himself with the immutable fact that nothing can stop the Karmic Law in its incessant work. [Sic: the Spanish prints parcialidad and Plano.] Nevertheless, all these explanations found no echo in the King.
His questions and observations concerning the incidents of the struggle set in evidence that he was subjugated by the tyranny of his inferior nature. Testimony of this was the intense emotion he expressed on the occasion of the fall of Bhisma — the generalissimo of the Kurus — which gave convincing proof that Sanjaya's toils to inculcate in the King an upright attitude proved futile.
In such conditions, and after long reflections, Sanjaya reached the conclusion that the only recourse circumstances afforded him was to relate to the King, in vivid form, the marvellous dialogue that was unfolding on the battlefield between the disheartened Arjuna and the Divine charioteer.
Because Sanjaya felt convinced that this great colloquy — which he had the privilege of witnessing — would produce in the King the effect necessary to smooth for him the road leading to the attainment of equanimity (Samatvan), so extolled by the Lord, without which the King could not reach the peace he so desired. (To be continued) _____________ The aims of Yoga are: First, to know the nature of Brahman and its manifestations, by means of study and practice.
Second, to know the purpose of individual existence. Third, to co-operate in the divine plan of cosmic existence, so that one may perform with mastery those works, or activities, which are akin to one's own nature. · 14
p. 15THE MODERN THEORIES OF ALCHEMY. By Jollivet Castelot S. I.
6 We are going to set forth here, as briefly as possible, the constitution of atoms and the experiments of transmutation of the chemical elements, according to the most recent theories. We shall use, for this purpose, the very clear little volume that Jean Becquerel has just published on Radioactivity and the transformation of the elements.
We shall examine, afterwards, some points relating to a procedure different from that employed by modern physicists. THE RAYS. The different rays are designated under the names of Becquerel rays, beta, alpha, gamma and secondary rays. [Sic: the Spanish prints nombro, for nombre.] The Becquerel rays produce a photographic action and ionisation — that is, the formation of electrified centres in rarefied gases.
The beta rays are formed by a flux of particles charged with negative electricity, and are deflected and dispersed by a magnetic field. The corpuscles that compose the beta rays are identical with the cathodic corpuscles; they are electrons. The alpha rays — a very absorbable part of the irradiation — are formed by helium ions emitted with a velocity of many thousands of kilometres per second, and pass through matter.
These rays are analogous to the canal rays of Crookes tubes. These alpha rays give off heat through the bombardment they effect of the substance to which they belong, and their energy represents 9/10 of the energy of the total irradiation. The gamma rays are very penetrating rays, not deflected, capable of crossing a great thickness of lead, and are clearly distinguished from the beta rays.
On crossing lead, these rays give origin to very important and very active secondary rays. 6 1) This interesting article by Jollivet Castelot, translated for La Iniciación by Pitágoras, has been extracted from the review Le Voile d'Isis — Year 30 — No. 64 — April 1925 — pages 196 to 210.
Jollivet Castelot, initiated into the Martinist Order and into the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose Cross, was a great collaborator of Papus. He was director of alchemical studies at the Faculty of Hermetic Sciences, and first Secretary and afterwards President of the Alchemical Society of France.
He founded, in 1885, the review Hyperchimie, Organ of the Alchemical Society of France and, in 1900, the review Le Rose Croix. [Editorial gloss: the founding year of Hyperchimie is usually given later in the same decade.] He directed the review Les nouveaux horizons de la Science and collaborated in many others, among them Les Partisans.
He published numerous works worthy of mention: La synthèse de l'or; La science alchimique; Comment on devient alchimiste; L'état actuel de l'Alchimie en France; Natura Mystica; L'Alchimie; Tradition occulte; Métaphysique de l'Hermétisme; Au Carmel; La vie et l'âme de la matière; etc. [Sic: several of the French titles are printed with corrupted accents.] EDITORIAL NOTE. · 15
p. 16The gamma rays seem to owe their origin to the sudden expulsion of an electron; they are very penetrating X-rays. They are electromagnetic waves whose wavelengths are extremely small. They are not of a corpuscular nature. [Sic: the Spanish adds sino metálica, an evident corruption.] The secondary rays are of the same nature as the beta; they are formed by electrons whose mean velocity exceeds half the velocity of light.
The trajectories of these rays are strongly curved and diffuse. Finally, the beta rays likewise give origin to secondary beta rays. Besides these rays, there exist the luminous rays, visible and invisible, the X-rays, the Hertzian waves.
All these rays are radiant energy without material support, in the form of electromagnetic waves. The Universe may be defined, then, as an irradiation of energy; and we see that force and matter merge in it into a unity, so to speak, absolute — weight being one of the properties of energy.
Present-day science returns, then, to the ancient doctrine of the hermetists, who taught that the world is an immense organism, a Macrocosm to which the Microcosm is identical. It is the Grand Man of the Kabbalah, the body of the Eternal Spirit. In reality, the Universe is a Thought, a Power, a living Idea whose integral reality escapes us.
It is seen, too, how delicate are these divisions of rays and particles, whose frontiers it is almost impossible to trace, and which constitute the undulations or vibrations of the single substance. The so-called electronic and ionic irradiation is nothing else than the perpetual manifestation of the soul of Matter, of its eternal life — but ever transformed and renewed. THE RADIOACTIVE EMANATIONS.
The emanations of radioactive bodies undergo a series of transformations that are revealed by the measure of the induced activity of the emanation upon an object (a plate or metallic wire) charged with negative electricity; this measurement is effected after the cessation of the exposure of the said object to the emanation. [Sic: the printed heading reads EMANCIPACIONES.] A decrease of the induced activity is then found, following the exponential law; and a correlation is established between the various rays produced by the · 16
p. 17emanation and the separate measurements of the ionisations due to these rays, given that the same law of decrease rules them. By this means is determined the period of the product, in hours: a delicate measurement resting on simple variations of induced currents. The period, or life, of a radioactive body, calculated by this method, oscillates between a few minutes and 4 to 5 thousands of millions of years; it is, as can be seen, very great.
The radioactive transformations set in play the colossal intra-atomic energies, by transmutation or by disintegration. Each radioactive body would be a well-determined element, but less stable than those that constitute ordinary matter. The phenomena of transformation of the radioactive elements remain until now inexplicable to the savants.
One perceives the confusion of their ideas in this respect. They have recourse either to the theory of the spontaneously explosive atom, or to the theory of the atom rendered explosive by the action of ultra-X rays. Some affirm that these dissociations are exothermic; others, that they are endothermic.
Jean Becquerel thinks that chance presides over these states of disintegration, but recognises, on the other hand, that atomic evolution is rigorously determined. My God, how clear all this is!
And yet, when one of these gentlemen sees white, another sees black — or the same gentleman says at once yes and no. For the alchemist, on the contrary, the question is clean: the atomic splittings — neither more nor less mysterious than the other phenomena of life — correspond to the states of death and of birth, always simultaneous, of the infinite number of atomic individualities that compose the Universe. [Sic: the Spanish prints interno, for infinito.] These phenomena are of an order subtler than those affecting the combinations of atoms or molecules known to classical chemistry; but they are of the same nature.
Radioactivity is simply a state of atomic energy in which electro-magnetism — that is, the psychism or soul of the atoms — appears, in some manner, in its nakedness; but, in reality, it is always the same power that works: that gathers and disperses, that creates and destroys, that clashes and overturns myriads of ephemeral individualities, with the purpose of maintaining, in a rhythm that surpasses us and consequently escapes us, the harmony of the Cosmos, whose incessant disequilibria are necessary for the integral equilibrium. · 17
p. 18THE STRUCTURE OF THE ATOM. According to the modern theories, the atom is formed of a nucleus, which constitutes the enclosed — or almost enclosed — part, and of the periphery, which is subject to the influence of the habitual agents.
It is admitted that the cathodic rays, formed of negative electricity, are constituted by electrons of mass 1850 times smaller than the mass of the lightest of atoms; and that the rays of positive electricity (canal rays) are formed of ions, that is, of electrified matter. And further, it is admitted that the beta rays are electrons, and the alpha, helium ions.
The nucleus is considered to be positively charged, and as if surrounded by an atmosphere of electrons gravitating around it, like the planets around the sun. This conception of the atom did not satisfy all the physicists, and Thomson, among them, imagined another hypothesis. According to him, the atom would be formed by a sphere positively charged, in whose interior negative electrons would be enclosed.
These would move according to a pendular movement, which would explain the fixity of the spectral lines. Rutherford, finding this theory in its turn imperfect, took up again — modifying it a little — the conception of an atomic structure comparable to that of the planets and the sun.
As for the hermetists, they consider that the structure of the atom depends on affinity — that is, on the masculine and feminine polarity that constitutes the primordial and absolutely universal law. The potency of this affinity, varying with individuals, explains the vital phenomena of gravitation, of translation and of rotation, which work in reason of the mass and energy corresponding to each individual.
It matters little, then, whether it be a question of atoms or of stars, whose laws are naturally identical.
In effect, there are only beings that incarnate the potency and the potentialities of the unknowable Principle; and, for us — who can record only the manifestations of all the beings that people the Universe — it is always under the form of energy that we must formulate the acts of the agents of Nature: an ephemeral personification of consciousness, of desire perpetuating itself through love — that is, through passional affinity — in immense whirlwinds of mass.
If we apply Rutherford's theory in the domain of chemistry, we shall consider hydrogen, for example, as constituted by a positive electron called a proton, around which a negative electron gravitates. The helium atom will be considered as formed by an alpha particle around which two electrons gravitate. The alpha particle would be constituted by four protons and two · 18
p. 19electrons, which would form a grouping capable of intervening in bloc in the constitution of other nuclei. For any element, the atomic number is the difference between the number of protons and the number of electrons contained in the nucleus. The proton constitutes a nucleus of positive electricity, the electron is a particle of negative electricity — the two having equal charges, but of contrary signs.
It is seen that, in the end, this theory returns once more to the ancient doctrine of the unity of matter and of bipolar, or bisexual, affinity. We observe, on the other hand, that the present-day physicists abuse excessively arbitrary hypotheses and mathematical formulas in what concerns the problem of the structure of atoms and their constitutions in ions and electrons.
One does not see why, in effect, the divisibility of atoms must be halted at ions and electrons. These particularities can be carried on indefinitely, to the division of matter to infinity — which, at bottom, has no practical sense. Might not the ion and the electron correspond rather to vital manifestations, to dynamic states of the atomic being?
It is evident that the atom is complex like man, the animal, the plant; and that is why the stopping-point of intra-atomic energy cannot be established, just as its exact nature cannot be determined nor its real potency calculated. THE TRANSMUTATION OF THE NON-RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS. Here, now, are the results admitted in what concerns the transmutation of the non-radioactive elements by Rutherford's method.
This savant observed that the alpha rays of radium C' give rise to hydrogen rays formed of protons, when they strike molecules of hydrogen or compounds of it. [Sic: the Spanish prints del centelleo here.] These rays are observed by the scintillation method.
Substituting nitrogen for the hydrogen, the same hydrogen rays are obtained; the rays are likewise formed of protons, and Rutherford asserts that the hydrogen found cannot be attributed to impurities, by reason of the velocity of the range of these rays in air. The protons would issue from the nucleus of the nitrogen, and this nitrogen nucleus would be the nucleus of another element — perhaps of carbon. · 19
p. 20This experiment, and others effected by Rutherford and Chadwick, consist in the bombardment of the elements by alpha rays. Hydrogen rays would thus have been obtained with boron, nitrogen, fluorine, sodium, aluminium and phosphorus; and these two savants admit that those hydrogen rays came from the nuclei of the bodies in question.
Here are the recipes that would permit, according to this procedure of electric bombardment, the making of gold: 1.° Take from thallium one alpha particle. [Sic: the Spanish prints talium.] 2.º Take from bismuth two alpha particles. 3.° Take from lead two alpha particles and one beta particle. 4.º Take from mercury one alpha particle and one beta particle.
5.° Take a proton from mercury. But the sources of energy for obtaining these transmutations are insufficient, these gentlemen declare. The yield of these transmutations appears, moreover, deplorable.
In the case of aluminium, for example, only two alpha particles in a million strike a nucleus; so that, bombarding aluminium with the alpha rays of a gramme of radium, there would be liberated, after almost a year, the thousandth part of a cubic millimetre of hydrogen.
Transmutations of so infinitesimal an order remain doubtful, and we persist in believing that the true road of alchemy is found in the procedures we have defended many times here — of which our experiment on silver treated with orpiment and kermes seems to us, so to speak, crucial. [Sic: a stray numeral follows decirlo in the Spanish.] TRANSMUTATION BY THE CHEMICAL WAY.
The gold produced in this synthesis (it is more than suggestive to note that As 74.96 + Sb 120.2 = 195.6, a figure near the atomic weight of gold, 197.2) under a catalytic influence — due either to the silver, or to the arsenic and sulphur — could be an isotope: that is, a gold possessing the general properties of the known gold, but with a slightly different atomic weight, in consequence of the transformation undergone by the atomic nuclei. [Sic: the Spanish prints isótropo.] In this experiment, the quantities of gold produced by the transmutation are clearly appreciable and even measurable, if we refer to certain assays whose results have been communicated to me by different operators who have taken up my method again — especially, in these last times, by Lestrade, whose letter I here reproduce: · 20
p. 21Lyon, November 28, 1924. Dear Master and Sir: I inform you, as I promised, that I repeated your experiment concerning the transmutation of silver into gold. On a quantity of 125 grammes of virgin silver I put, at the rate of one ounce per pound, orpiment, and 1/3 of kermes — that is, 7 gr.
5 of orpiment and 2 grammes of kermes.
I heated the silver to 500/600º for half an hour, and brought the temperature of the furnace to 1150/1200º for four consecutive hours. [Sic: the second figure is printed l200 with a letter ell.] After this cooking, I added 7 grammes of orpiment, 3 grammes of kermes and 5 grammes of sal ammoniac, 5 grammes of saltpetre, 5 grammes of borax, as well as 200 grammes of grated soap — the whole amalgamated, placed in a new crucible, upon which I poured the molten silver; and I put the whole back in the furnace for 3 hours. [Sic: the Spanish prints ama1gamado, with a numeral.] I afterwards cooked the silver for 7 consecutive hours, and obtained a white ingot (the added elements are the cause of the loss of colour of the ingot, primitively yellow).
My assayer, Louis Gagneux of Lyon, found traces of gold, but could not weigh them. He told me, however, that the quantity of gold there may be in this ingot would be approximately 1/4 of a gramme. Deign to accept, etc. P.
A. Lestrade, 136, Route de Crémieu, Lyon — Villeurbanne. I have likewise effected the assays mentioned above, indicated by the wet way: treating the substances, intimately mixed, with pure nitric acid at 40º, first cold, then boiling, for many days.
The substance not dissolved in the nitric acid, of blackish aspect, was treated with aqua regia, first cold, then boiling, likewise for many days, until the dissolution of almost all the deposit. Then the liquor was evaporated in a bain-marie, treated with distilled water, filtered, and submitted to the ordinary reagents of gold, which set in evidence the presence of this metal.
To obtain more considerable yields it would doubtless be opportune to make gold intervene as a ferment, introducing a small, minutely measured quantity into the mixture of silver, arsenic and antimony. This falls, moreover, within the theory of Le Brun de Virloy on the growth of metals. METALLIC GROWTH.
The metal whose growth is desired serves, in some manner, as a ferment, a cell — as in the case of the growth of crystals. For example, to obtain gold, a small quantity of gold must be placed, which will determine the atomic change sought and will serve as centre for a group identical to its own nature.
Thus, I precipitated a minimal quantity of gold by a solution of ferrous sulphate; and it was only after many days that the solution treated by the ferrous sulphate no longer gave the deposit of gold. The precipitation of gold was more abundant and more continuous than · 21

LA CONJUNCION DE JUPITER. NEPTUNO, SOL Y MERCURIO
Por Lorelair S. I.
4
p. 22it ought to have been in relation to the initial quantity of gold, and the drying of the solution had nothing comparable to that of ordinary reactions7. A procedure of research capable of giving good results consists also in the formation of artificial mines.
In a small vat, a mixture will be made of various metals and metalloids — such as iron, copper, silver, arsenic, sulphur, iodine — and this mixture will be treated with nitric acid or sulphuric acid.
After having noted the reactions, it will be treated with aqua regia, repeating the addition of the baths at several stages, for weeks, cold or hot — so as to make it penetrate the whole mass and to imitate nature, which always works with extreme slowness. Of course the combinations of the bodies employed can be varied, as also the solutions destined to attack them and dissolve them as well as possible.
The insoluble parts will be taken and treated with the appropriate reagents to dissolve them. This method will in all likelihood permit transmutations to be obtained in much higher quantities than those obtained with the electric bombardment of rarefied gases — for it must never be forgotten that atomic disintegration is effected under the influence of natural agents much better than in any other manner. APPEAL TO THE YOUNG CHEMISTS.
Ending this brief and imperfect sketch of a Chemical Revolution, I cannot but launch a vibrant appeal to the new generation of chemists, whose mission is to make fruitful the deposit entrusted to them. They must consider Chemistry in particular, and Science in general, not commercially but under its pure and disinterested aspect — even without much concern for industrial applications.
It is necessary, in effect, that there be phalanxes of investigators exempt from every practical preoccupation; that the young chemists distrust fashionable theories, algebrism à outrance and the magister dixit, the little works of fractionation that serve only to write a thesis and praise this or that Professor.
Let them launch themselves boldly toward the great problems of the great discoveries: transmutation of bodies, synthesis of the elements, rational and experimental classification of the elements according to their evolution and their atomic weights — but let it be with complete liberty of spirit, without any preconceived idea and without prejudices of school. The future of Chemistry is not confined, thank God, to the laboratories of the Sorbonne. 7 A transmutation of iron atoms into gold must have taken place. · 22
Maestro:
¡Amaos los unos a los otros!

Enseñanzas de Surya. S. I.

movimientos, sean Internos o externos.
SABER, QUERER CALLAR, QUERER OSAR, QUERER QUERER.

PLANO ASTRAL

2.º) Comprende a los discípulos identificados por el término “IRANI PATENA”;

Por Jollivet Castelot S. I. 6

Los rayos gama parecen deber su origen a la expulsión repentina de un electrón;

ANNAMAYAKOSHA y PRANAMAYAKOSHA.
ICCHA SAMSARA. !
Vida en el astral. !
El cuerpo mental inferior de los teósofos. !
NANOMAYAKOSI1A.
JNANA SAMSARA. !
Vida en el cuerpo causal. !
VIJNANAMAYAKOSHA.
YOGA SAMSARA. !
BUDDHI y cuerpos superiores. !
ANANDAMAYAKOSHA.
