p. 4Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism — Historical-chronological notes on the Martinist Order. by Pitágoras, S. I. (Continuation) Willermoz's principal preoccupation on creating this degree was to keep in the most absolute secrecy the doctrinal content that was to be taught in it — a secrecy so rigorous that even the other masons of lower degrees were to be unaware of it.
This secrecy, moreover, was to be preserved as regards the purpose of the degree, the rituals, and even the origin of the doctrine; and it went so far that the degree itself was to be totally unknown.
The name of Profession given to this degree concealed, in truth, its real essence, because this name was none other than the one Baron von Weiler had already instituted — not as a degree but as a dignity — to designate the regularly initiated Knight. [Sic: the Spanish prints Weller here.] Why had Willermoz taken the resolution to incorporate into the Strict Observance this degree that was to contain the doctrine of the Cohens?
Without any doubt because he was animated by the desire to diffuse in masonry that doctrine which until then had been taught exclusively to a relatively small number of "men of desire". Why so much prudence, and so many precautions in keeping everything absolutely secret? Possibly to prevent his activity in that direction from becoming known — an attitude completely in accordance with his quality of Fil...
Desc..., an attitude recommended in the Cohen Chapters, which taught the abstraction of the human personality and, surely, an attitude directed at maintaining the oath of silence that each cohen made at the moment of his initiation. It was thus that Willermoz, helped by Saltzmann and by the cohens of Lyon, proceeded to lay the bases of the programme of reform of the Order of the Strict Observance.
Everything referring to the degree of Profession was studied, then, exclusively by Willermoz in the most absolute secrecy, and only Perisse du Luc helped him a little — and solely in what concerned "matters of style and arrangement". "His task, writes Joly (Un mystique lyonnais et les secrets de la Franc-Maçonnerie — page 107), was delicate, given that he had to graft into the degree a summary of · 4
p. 5the whole doctrine of the Reintegration as he understood it after years of experience, of studies and of reflections; and given that he had, moreover, to distinguish between what could be said and what must be kept silent in rituals not destined for the Cohens. It seemed to him that it was not to betray his oaths to adapt to another society the dogmatic part of Pasqually's teachings, since he made no mention of the practical part.
The Order of the Cohens kept, alone, the secret of its singular cult, the power of admitting neophytes and the care of guiding them in the practice of the operations of its marvellous theurgy". Everything was ready on the eve of the inauguration of the Congress of the Gauls, and we shall see how he will obtain full success in it, managing to have the degree of Profession accepted.
Willermoz, thanks to his intelligent and persevering work, extended his influence; and the Profession — thanks to his long view, his faith and his absolute dedication to the "Thing" — constituted another shoot of the Martinesist trunk, which was already on the eve of its disappearance.
But, before occupying ourselves with the Congress of the Gauls — what was the attitude the cohens took toward Willermoz's activities, in the Strict Observance as in French masonry?
We have seen that many cohens, conscious or not of Willermoz's secret intentions, followed him and collaborated with him to reach the goal he proposed; but there were also many others who, not understanding what Willermoz's aims might be — or, knowing them, not agreeing with him in following that doubtful road — shaped their conduct accordingly.
Was not the whole past experience of Martines de Pasqually a sufficiently clear lesson — he who for so many years had wished to achieve, without success, exactly what Willermoz proposed to achieve: to spiritualise masonry? Why repeat that experience? Why not devote oneself exclusively to the consolidation of the Order of the Elect Cohens — which had been abandoned to the various personal orientations of the R.
C. — instead of losing time and energies in a masonic order of more or less suspect fame? The cohens, as can be seen, were not all of the same opinion.
Hence, in "the small number of men devoted to prudence and discretion by their oaths and their formulas" — of those men "who had attracted many sympathies by their gentle and pious tranquillity" — there arose, in 1778, the decision that was to facilitate the disgregation of the Order of the Elect Cohens and the transformation of primitive martinesism: with the creation of Willermoz's Profession, and of the martinism properly so called of Saint Martin.
Among these dissident cohens were Willermoz's own brothers, though later they helped him in his masonic activities. Had not Pierre Jacques written him, in 1774, words that showed his disapproval of Jean-Baptiste's orientation?
"As for me in particular, he wrote, as I cannot occupy myself with so many things and can scarcely occupy myself with our greater affair, which is the only one that interests me, I renounce the other if you do not believe the thing necessary to the good of our order".
p. 6drawn into his brother's orbit, worked with him until, in 1777, weary, he resigned from all the masonic offices he had, well or ill, discharged until then.
For his part, his brother Antonio, in a letter he wrote him in 1777, set in evidence — not as a mason but as a cohen — all the "schisms" that had been produced in Hundt's masonry, the illusory plans of organisation, reform and propaganda, its "vicious" organisation, its "very chimerical or very veiled" purposes; and confessed that he had not yet understood why he and Jean-Baptiste had got into that organisation.
He ended by saying that he had frequently expressed to his sister, Mme. de Provensal, his wonder at seeing how his brother — knowing "a shorter road" — had induced his disciples to seek elsewhere the "sublime knowledge" that his "particular society" (the cohens) already possessed.
Saint Martin himself — who, at Willermoz's request, had reluctantly agreed to have his name included among those who made the official petition to Charles von Hundt, on 23 July 1773, to be initiated into the Strict Observance — never occupied himself with it; and though his spirit of tolerance for Willermoz's masonic activities induced him to keep silence, he also disapproved, intimately, of his friend's having placed himself in an order in which he had not much confidence — a disapproval that went so far, as we shall see further on, as to provoke a dissension in July 1775.
Many other cohens likewise disapproved of Willermoz's attitude; and others, finally, confined themselves exclusively to playing the role of spectators, waiting for time to show who was right. It seemed, in effect, on the eve of the congress of the Gauls, that the dissident Cohens were actually right.
Willermoz himself — who had remained deaf to all the warnings and counsels of the cohens and had persevered in his attitude — was somewhat disillusioned, and it seemed to him that he had lost his time. At least so he expressed it in his letter of 12 October 1781 to Charles von Hundt. But, shortly after, the facts and the results obtained showed quite the contrary, as we shall presently see.
It must be recognised, then, that in spite of the decadence of the Strict Observance, the reform Willermoz effected in its bosom with the institution of the Profession made it possible to diffuse a parcel of the Master's doctrine and also, later, an easier diffusion of the doctrine of the cohens in the spiritualist circles of France and of other European nations.
And now that we have set forth what Willermoz's hidden designs were — kept rigorously secret, designs he desired to see realised at the congress of the Gauls — we shall close this long parenthesis and return to our chronological exposition, speaking, in the next number, of the sessions of the congress of the Gauls and of the results the martinists of Lyon obtained in it. ______________ · 6
p. 7Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya, S. I. THE MEANING OF THE TWELVE HOUSES.
By means of all that has already been published in this course, it is possible to organise a "radical figure" of birth, to aspect it, to define the interpretation of the Ascending Sign — for which we have given the meaning of each sign and of its divisions into decanates and faces — and to know also the influence of each of the seven planets, which were studied in particular.
When we look at a "radical" (the astrological scheme of a birth) we see that the planets are situated in a determinate house of the figure and within determinate zodiacal signs.
From this it results that, besides what a planet signifies in itself, and the "modification" its influence receives from the aspects that other stars may eventually form with that celestial body, we have now to determine the meaning of a planet under two conditions: a) By being found in a determinate house of the figure. b) By being situated in a determinate zodiacal sign.
But before studying this, let us see in detail WHAT THE HOUSES OF THE FIGURE SIGNIFY in themselves — that is, what kinds of FACTS of human life are comprised in each of those twelve divisions of the figure.
The martinist astrologer Julevno teaches the following on this important point of judicial astrology: "The First House, called the "Ascendant" because it seems to be born with us and to be the source of life, imprints on us our character, determining the temperament, the habits and — through the external form it bestows on our body — grants us a determinate personality. [Sic: the Spanish prints E1, with a numeral.] When Mars is situated here, it produces a scar, a spot or a mark on the head or face, which are the parts of the body influenced by this house.
Saturn in this house gives coarse or sullen persons. The Dragon's Tail indicates untidy or dirty persons. [Sic: the Spanish omits the verb, printing casa de personas.] The Second House relates to acquired goods and to the gains or riches obtained by work, commerce or industry, and not by inheritances.
It influences, moreover, the person's liberty. (Jehel affirms that it relates also to intellectual studies and especially to the education received in youth.) · 7
p. 8Jupiter or Venus situated in this house grant fortune, unless they were badly aspected. Saturn or Mars, debilitated or badly aspected, as well as the Dragon's Tail, announce loss of goods or of fortune. This house rules the nape, the neck and the throat.
The Third House is known as the house of brothers, sisters, relatives and neighbours, as well as that of electors in politics. It relates also to studies, writings, news, vehicles and means of transport, short journeys by land, removals and education.
The Fourth House signifies the father (in a masculine horoscope, and the mother in a feminine one), his condition, the father-in-law, the native's inheritances such as real property, the residence, the home formed by the person himself, and the place of birth. By it judgment is also formed on the end of life, as regards position and fortune.
The Sun or Venus present here, well aspected with the lord of the Ascendant or with that of the 2nd house, are of happy augury. The benefics situated in this house, or their good aspects reaching it, prognosticate a happy old age. This house rules the stomach, the bronchi and the lungs.
The Fifth House is that of children, of speculations, of games of chance, of pleasures and of voluptuousness. It indicates the affections, the bed, theatres, taverns, schools and every place of recreation. It also indicates the father's riches.
Saturn and Mars, situated here, are very unfavourable. This house rules the heart and the back. The Sixth House relates to servants, subordinates, small domestic animals, uncles and aunts.
It also indicates the person's position as a subordinate, employee or "server" in every sense. By it judgment is formed on illnesses; and the planets situated here, badly aspected with the luminaries (Sun or Moon), indicate the exact nature of the afflictions that will trouble the health.
Here, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or the Ascending Node, when well aspected, are very benefic and promise health and goods. [Sic: the Spanish prints e1, with a numeral.] Mercury or Mars, well aspected and situated here, indicate physicians, chemists, pharmacists, etc. This house rules the belly and the intestines. The Seventh House relates to marriage or unions, designating the spouse — husband or wife according to the figure.
It refers also to associations, contracts, important business; to the persons with whom one will have lawsuits or differences, and to all those who are not family and with whom one has business or similar affairs. In this house is also seen what relates to the person's political position, and what refers to his grandparents.
This house rules the kidneys and the whole lumbar region. [Sic: the Spanish doubles rige los.] The Eighth House refers to inheritances, wills and all the goods that come to us from the deceased, those the spouse brings by dowry, as well as the kind of death · 8
p. 9of the person himself — which is indicated with special clarity when the planet "lord of the 8th house" is also a significator of death. This house rules the genital parts.
Jehel indicates that it is in this house that we must also seek the signs that will indicate the ease or difficulty of contact with the astral plane, and the possibilities of "occult inheritance" — that is, of contact with the true occult traditions, initiatic currents, etc. The Ninth House is the one that refers to long journeys — by sea, by land, by air, etc. — containing also indications on lawsuits and on literary or scientific publications.
It indicates religious and philosophical ideas, and possesses greater influence than the third house over the person's spirit or inclinations, especially if some planet is present in it. It relates also to dreams, and to brothers- and sisters-in-law. Jupiter situated in this house indicates faith and modesty.
Saturn or Mars give a tendency to incredulity and to infidelity. This house governs the thighs.
The Tenth House is considered the one of greatest influence from the practical point of view, called that of the "summum vitae" by the ancients. [Sic: the Spanish prints sumum.] It is also, astrologically, that of the "Midheaven", and makes known to us what will be the vocation, employment or profession of the native, his dignities, honours, fame, credit — and the opposite of all this if the figure is unfavourable.
This house represents business and activity in general, superiors (in every sense) and the government of the country of birth or of activity. It also indicates the condition of the mother and the mother-in-law (or father and father-in-law in a feminine figure). Saturn, Mars or the Descending Node are extremely unfavourable in this house.
This house also represents the knees. The Eleventh House refers to friends, counsellors, associates, protectors, the ambience in which the person lives, his hopes, projects, social success and the maternal fortune. The signs of Sagittarius or Pisces, with Jupiter in them, on this house, grant very attentive friends.
The planets in it will indicate the kind and quality of the person's friends. This house, opposite the 5th, has a certain influence over children and must be consulted in that regard. Let us say, in passing, that all the "opposite" houses maintain a reciprocal influence.
This house rules the ankles and the calves. The Twelfth House indicates sorrows, probations, hidden difficulties, exiles, internment in asylums and hospitals, criminal trials and prisons, as well as large animals. The malefic planets situated in it will indicate secret enemies, chronic illnesses and disastrous journeys, or journeys related to mysterious things.
The benefic planets situated in this house grant the person an irresistible power of attraction — it being necessary to see, by the figure in general, what use he will make of that possibility. This house rules the feet and their toes. Jehel indicates that this house refers also to all the Occult Centres of Initiation, secret societies, etc. — which explains the importance of its astrological relations with the ninth. · 9
p. 10Maha Boddhi Sangha. MESSAGE FOR THE DAY OF THE "WHITE LOTUS". By Upasika (Bikkú) A∴M∴ In these brief lines the Maha Boddhi Sangha renders cult to the memory of the Venerable Teacher H.
P. B. (Upasika), on the memorable day of the "White Lotus". Venerable Buddhist brothers of the whole world: today, with hearts swollen with love and devotion, we celebrate the day of the "White Lotus", which corresponds to 8 May of each year.
It also falls to us to celebrate, on this memorable day on which the whole of mystical and millennial India celebrates its greatest festivity, the Great Teacher, the Venerable Helena Petrowna Blavatsky, who disincarnated on the symbolic date of 8 May 1891. This Eminent Teacher bore, moreover, the secret name of Upasika (Initiated Buddhist) — a name given her by the Supreme Hierarchs of the Great Buddhist Fraternity of Tibet.
Venerable "Old Lady", the Masters whom she so loved and served with absolute disinterest and deep devotion called her, affectionately and familiarly. The Teacher was in continual contact with the Adepts, the Gurus and the Mahatmas of the Great Asiatic Buddhist Lodge.
The Venerable Upasika fulfilled the difficult mission those had entrusted to her, giving of herself; with courage, dedication and love of service she gave impulse to the Great Buddhist Fraternity to which she belonged, a "High Hierarchic Degree" falling to her. She was a notable writer of many beautiful books.
Among them we recall Isis Unveiled, of profound erudition; The Secret Doctrine, her summit work, which will only be understood and valued at the end of this century; The Voice of the Silence, a jewel of Esoteric literature where the purest Essence of the Buddhist Doctrine is made known; and many more which, with the foregoing, were universally read and translated into all languages, becoming a generous fount of inspiration for occultists, who obtained light to write their own works thereafter.
She founded and developed the Theosophical Movement, which came to spread extraordinarily throughout the world, fostering with its doctrines fraternity and the noble sentiment of peace, love, comprehension and wisdom — attributes that lead human beings toward better possibilities of knowing the Divine part that exists in each of us, that is, the "Divine" and "Immortal I".
The Venerable Teacher Upasika, faithful disciple of the Holy Buddha, True Initiate of Highest Hierarchy, disincarnated on the memorable day of the "White Lotus", as befitted her Great Personality. Her physical death had to coincide with this grandiose date so that the memory of her lofty figure should be for ever linked to the august symbol · 10
p. 11of the Great Sacred Flower which, in Mysterious, Millennial and Mystical India, is commemorated with especial rejoicing. White Lotus! Sacred flower!
Thou symbolisest the evolutionary process of man! Thy roots in the mire, thy daring stem crossing the still or turbulent waters of the lake sustain thy magnificent flower, which opens at the surface to receive directly the vivifying effluvia of the radiant Solar Light. The fundamental idea of this symbol is very beautiful.
It represents the incarnation of the subjective in the objective; it is the Divine Ideation, passing from the concrete abstract form to the concrete visible form. The future immaculate petals of the Lotus are conformed within its seeds, absolutely complete, such as they will be in their future form. So too is the being that forms in the maternal womb.
Here is one of the many analogies of this plant with the human being. The Lotus is, then, that delicate flower of philosophical and religious significance, consecrated to Nature and to the Gods, and representing the Universe in the abstract and in the concrete, being the emblem of the productive powers, of spiritual as of physical nature. It is a plant of highly occult qualities.
Sacred in Egypt, in India, in Tibet and in all Asia, they call it "The Son of the Universe", because it bears in its bosom the likeness of the mother. Maha Maya, Mother of Gautama the Buddha, the Saviour of the world, is annunciated by the Bodhi Satwa with a Lotus flower between his hands.
Thus the expression of the Bhagavad Gita — "O Thou Eternal One, I see Brahma the Creator enthroned in thee, upon the Lotus" — is confirmed in the perfect realisation of the Holy Buddha.
This marvellous flower symbolises also the man who, fallen into the mud of materiality, passes through the sorrows and struggles of life across multiple incarnations, geared into the Wheel of Eternal Life, finally to open his spiritual corolla at the summit of his marvellous evolution. Exquisite and mysterious flower, that symbolisest all that is sacred! Thou wast chosen by a people of Sages and Saints from the remotest times of ancient India.
Thou openest thy corolla too in the serene, perfumed penumbra of all the Sacred Temples of Tibet — temples so loved by the Great Teacher Helena Petrowna Blavatsky. May the chaste perfume of all these white flowers pour their essence upon her soul, as homage to her tireless labour. Honour and praises to thee, Great Soul consecrated to the good of Humanity!
Honour also to thy distinguished companion of labour, the Venerable Colonel Henri Steel Olcott, honoured servant during the hard and heroic struggles to sustain the Truth unimpaired! A faithful and sincere collaborator, he helped thee to found the Theosophical Society on 17 November 1875 — a work that radiated its light, scattering knowledge through the whole world. Venerable and beloved Upasika!
May, by the virtue of thy love, all the wickednesses, the vexations, the jealousies, the hatreds, the calumnies, the envies and the lies which thy knowledge and thy greatness awakened in the hearts of the mediocre and small of soul, be transformed into beautiful and perfumed lotus flowers; and so may thy memory be ever remembered with affection and with respect, on the day of Universal Love, of the White Lotus, the day of Peace, 8 May, when once more in our year · 11
p. 12H. A. B.
M. The Heavens Trembled. Fire covered all the Firmament; Wrapped in Tongues of Fire Of Inconceivable Height, Thundering and Lightening, There descended the "Regal Chariot" With the Divine "Sons of the Fire", Bringing the "August King", The "Governor of the World", Accompanied by the Three Kumaras.
And his Retinue: the "Regal Chariot" alighted Upon the imperishable "White Island"… Thus was born Shamballa the Divine, The Resplendent Seat Of the Invisible International Government.
Millions of years ago, it became necessary to prepare the arrival of the "King of the World", so as with his advent to found at the same time the Directing Spiritual Centre, from which would radiate all the different Religious Currents and where the Great Hierarch Founders of the same would also be prepared.
From Shamballa the Divine Messengers would go forth to preach among men the Holy Law and lead Humanity toward a Road of Wisdom and Perfection. To prepare the arrival of the "Sons of the Fire" the epoch had to be chosen in which our Earth should find itself in the most favourable magnetic conditions, a special conjunction of planets being sought for such a happy event.
When the announced hour arrived — with the Firmament kindled in tongues of fire, wrapped in igneous clouds, with thunderous noise as if the Heavens trembled and all Nature rejoiced — the arrival was announced of the "Lords of the Fire", known also in Shamballa by the name of "Sons of the Flame".
Then descended the "Regal Chariot" from Inconceivable Heights; the "Lords of the Flame", the Three Great Kumaras and all their Royal Retinue, come from Venus, accompanied the "Governor of the World" and set their Divine Feet for the first time upon the "White Island", the Resplendent and Invisible Shamballa. Light of the World... Then Shamballa filled with green foliage and perfumed flowers.
As an offering at the arrival of its King, as homage at the arrival of the "Lord of Eternal and Virginal Youth", as a salute to the New Governor and Administrator of the Invisible International Government, the whole of Nature sent over Shamballa its Perfumed Breath, and the Earth trembled with rejoicing.
The Supreme Governor of the World, in company with his Three Great Hierarchs, his Assistants and Disciples, took possession of their High Offices for the direction of the Hidden Government. The Hierarchs clothed themselves in Glorious Bodies which They themselves formed by the Supreme Power of Divine Yoga called Kriyashakti — since, come from so far, they possessed no physical body properly so called, like mortals, and had the · 12
p. 13Faculty of creating one at will with the matter of the Globe where they were to live, act and work. The "Governor of the World" with his Three Assessors — who were secretly called "Sons of the Fire-Mist" — and all his Retinue resided definitively in Shamballa, the "Sacred Island", which keeps this last name in memory of the epoch when it was an island of the inland sea of Asia.
Although their Bodies resemble in something those of human beings, they differ at the same time completely from them — not only in density but in vibration — since these Vestures, assumed for convenience, are artificial, and the particles that form them never change like those of the human body, remaining immutable for millions of years.
Their Bodies need no food and nourish themselves as the Sun does, whose heat and energy are ever constant through the ages. Before a New Instructor appears in the World — as were the Master Jesus and the Buddha — Shamballa, Seat of the Invisible International Government, sends the "Announcers of the Master".
It is from Shamballa that the Great Instructors, Adepts, Gurus, Mahatmas have always come to us, come to us now and will come; from Shamballa will go forth those who are to help re-establish the Law, and from there will arise the Grandiose Work of World Regeneration. Then the Adepts will have need to construct for themselves a special body, to be able to intervene directly in the affairs of the world.
The Supreme Hierarchs, on the other hand, who always reside in Shamballa, will take temporary possession of the body of their disciples, previously prepared and specially trained for their Work. Returning to the body of the Adepts: these can retain it much longer than the common man, from which it results that they can reach an age six and seven times greater than ours.
Our bodies age and die prematurely from varied causes — hereditary diseases, local diseases, passions, accidents, alimentary, moral and mental intoxications, physical and sexual wear, etc., etc. — while the bodies constructed by the Adepts suffer none of these disorders.
The Adept is capable of accomplishing immense labours without ever showing the slightest sign of fatigue; an Adept is pure, free of violent passions and, instead, always full of tenderness, love, compassion and understanding for all things and beings. His Body is always under the tonic of joviality.
The construction of a body without passing through the laws of birth — to which common men must submit — is no easy task, for it consumes a great quantity of time and energy; for this reason they do not wish to repeat this work more times than strictly necessary, and endeavour to make it last as long as possible. [Sic: the Spanish prints hacer o curar, where the sense wants durar.] The Adepts of the Great Occult Fraternities avoid these inconveniences by occupying the body of a disciple whose evolution is closely linked to theirs from another life or in the present one; and they use this borrowed vehicle when they need to give a message or lecture, or when they wish to pour upon some their beneficent directions, or when they wish to prepare a spiritual ambience and so pour out their blessings — returning afterwards to occupy once more the Body that belongs to them and restoring his own to their disciple.
p. 14body to the Guru, and who puts himself immediately in contact with the Spiritual Currents of the Great Fraternities, it will be like "plunging gently into a sweet sleep without dream"; he performs this labour with ease and full consciousness, without any kind of discomfort or disturbance. Generally the Gurus borrow a body when they believe it necessary to live in the proximity of men.
The temporary occupation made by an Adept in one of his disciples must not be confused with the permanent occupation and adoption of a body already prepared by a Master whose work and mission obliged him to act physically here on Earth.
The Great Hierarchs who construct their own Body to carry out their immense labour necessarily make it very sensitive, and for this reason it requires the utmost and most delicate care, since it must always be "well tuned" and in unsurpassable condition, to be a perfect "radio antenna" by which he may receive and transmit messages related to his Labour.
If the Great Hierarchs lived with their Body among us — surrounded by every kind of noise, by the maleficent vibrations of the low Mental Planes and by the continual bombardment of dense vibrations of the Physical Plane — they would soon fall ill; hence it is necessary for them to withdraw from the worldly bustle and isolate themselves in far-off, inaccessible retreats.
The Royal and Divine Hierarchy once established in Shamballa, the Great Instructors began to prepare for their labour — some of whom would incarnate physically again in different epochs and personalities.
So did the Lord Buddha, who was successively Vyasa, Hermes Trismegistus, the first of the twenty-nine Zoroasters — Instructors of the Fire — Orpheus in Greece, and incarnated at last in the North of India as Prince Gautama, wandering through the Valley of the Sacred Ganges for forty-five years, tirelessly preaching the Divine Law and the Perfect Wisdom and gathering around him those who in previous lives had been his disciples.
Shamballa sent also Him who was at one time the Divine Master Jesus, who at present occupies the body of a great Master living in the Middle East. The Governor of the World, the Great King of Shamballa, the Sole Initiator of the Great Hierarchs, sends from time to time One of his Favourite Sons into the World to re-establish the Law, when men sink into iniquity and materialism.
He sent lately the Lord Buddha, Sankaracharya, Ramakrishna, the Maharishi and others of Lesser Hierarchy, who during a short life established in the East certain Spiritual Centres called Mathas, Ashrams, Temples, Monasteries, and influenced, each in his own way, the spiritual life of India and other places — founding also Schools which were Beacons of Light that illumine the hearts of men, awakening in them the Divine Spark and setting in action the Sacred Fire of Devotion and Love for spiritual things.
Now we shall make pass panoramically before our eyes all the Sacred Places, the Mathas, the Ashrams, the Temples and Monasteries where veneration and work are carried on by the Great Hierarchs, beginning with Asia and ending with the Americas. May the Blessings of the Great Hierarchs and of the H. A.

PRAISES TO THE MAHATMAS, SIDDHAS AND GURUS!
GLORY! — Various articles have been published setting forth in detail — as it was drawn up by the Beloved Guru Subramanía — the great events that preceded, characterised and followed the Advent of the Avatara, Sri Bhagavan Mitra Deva, "Instructor of the World". [Sic: the Spanish prints Acatara.] Now, in some minds, as it has been permitted to gather, those three last words, "Instructor of the World", have caused some confusion.
Some, with elevated intention, have asked themselves whether there is a contradiction between this title, already borne by the Beloved Krishnamurti, and the one now given to the Avatara. [Sic: the Spanish prints Kishnumurit.] Others, with an intention it is not our wish to comment on, have chosen to express that one or the other should be used — or again that, this title being "unique", its very abundance was contradictory to its reality.
We shall not reply to these objections. The sacred admits no polemic. Where there is devotion, there can be no discussion; and where there is no devotion, the only thing that can be done is to pray that "it may come to be".
For the Disciples who with ardent heart receive every particle of knowledge that the Doctrine or direct perception grants, we shall set forth with affection some points that will permit them to form a much clearer idea on the question of the Instructors of the World and of the Avataras; and we shall include the meditation on WHAT such Exalted Beings REPRESENT — Krishna, the Buddha, Jesus Christ and others who have come and who will come.
In the important book — published by the Suddha Dharma Mandalam — "Commentaries of Sri Hamsa Yogui on the BHAGAVAD GITA BASHYA", in the English version of the Guru Subramanía (Spanish version by our dear Brother Giordano Bruno), we find the following passage, supremely important for the light it sheds on the matter that occupies us: "...But it is heartening to know that considerable vital knowledge, to which we have made mention, still survives among the Members of the Mandala.
And certainly, no greater service is to be rendered by such Members to their Aryavarta1 than to revive among its inhabitants the memory of the existence of the Spiritual Hierarchy of the World, and the fact that a well-defined branch of it is composed of such Masters of Wisdom, whose duties — in part — are to prepare those who, possessing the necessary conditions, aspire to be efficient in Raja Yoga. 1 Aryavarta: Sacred India. · 15
p. 16A decisive step conducive to the attainment of this purpose would be — in our humble understanding — the creation of places of religious study and spiritual instruction imparted by those members of the Mandala, who could offer, with the realisation of this laudable and Sacred Task, much more than the mere knowledge of the book of Raja Yoga — converting such places into focal centres of dissemination, among the attending Disciples, of what concerns the constitution of the Hierarchy, its Departments and branches, its duties and functions, as also the steps to be taken by the aspirants surrendered at the feet of the Great Masters of Wisdom, who alone are capable of leading them from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to Immortality.
We are sure that this return toward the Sacred Duty — if conducted by the right road — would render an elevated service to the cause of Religion, of tolerance and of the fraternal sentiments that Society so much needs.
Because such sacred centres would contribute to spreading widely in the country the knowledge of the sublime Philosophy taught by the School to which Hamsa Yogui belongs, as also that of the dogmas of the Mandala, notable for their catholicity (universality), derived in a straight line from the WISDOM RELIGION, sole fount of every faith in the World.
Certainly, not a little would our native land gain — today so agitated by sectarian feuds and intestine struggles.
It remains for us only to say that the Members of the Mandala think that no better opportunity has presented itself than the present as a point of departure for such Yogashramas — if so they may be called — since the present work of the Mandala goes so far that it can assure the success of the Mission of MITRA DEVA, the Great Master, whose public appearance it awaits within a few years.2 For this reason, it is our fervent hope that the authorities of the Mandala may see their course, so as to give practical effect to the respectful suggestions we have ventured to make above.
In accordance with the tradition prevailing in the Mandala, Bhagavan Mitra Deva is the FIRST OF THE NINE GREAT MASTERS who are to DESCEND to guide the World prior to the SIXTEENTH KRISHNAVATARA, which will take place 12,000 years from then. [Sic: the Spanish prints PPIMERO and KRISHHAVATARA.] The Tradition concerning the 16 Krishnas finds an echo in a passage of the Devi Bhagavata, referred to in the Sanskrit Upodghata of Hamsa Yogui (page 279).
The occult key of that passage may be established as follows: The correct meaning of the word "KRISHNA" may be inferred from a Sloka of the Mahabharata, in which the name is applied to the Samsara Nayaka, or Director of the World Process.
Its essence manifests itself in four forms, namely: JNANA, ICCHA, KRIYA and YOGA — each necessarily including four aspects, which constitute, in sum, the well-known 16 Samsaras, each having a Director, with the denomination of Krishna.
2 This phrase of the Guru Subramania, written in 1922, refers to the PUBLIC manifestation of the Avatara, for the Members of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam already had, from years before, knowledge of the Advent of the Avatara, born to physical existence on 16 January 1919, as has been made known in the Guru's circular of 10-5-1919, set forth in our previous number. [Editorial gloss: the circular as printed there was dated in January.] At present, it is known that the Avatara has at times come down from the Himalayas, to grant special initiations to certain Members of the Mandala. · 16
p. 17As in each Microcosm 16 Samsaras are involved, so also is it in the Cosmos. 15 Avataras called KRISHNAS have already appeared, and the last, the 16th so called, is to appear in order to complete the present evolution of our Globe.
The most prominent Members of the Mandala seem to be in possession of detailed reports concerning the nature of the Mission of Mitra Deva although, for obvious reasons, they show themselves reticent to speak more than is due to outsiders. However much this may be true, it is evident that, among other things, MITRA DEVA would teach that the true remedy for the great human disease of self-isolation is Universal Love and a total, altruistic service.
May the Labour of MITRA DEVA accelerate the birth of a new civilisation, which is to impel the human race toward its ultimate destiny". (1 May 1922. Signed: S.
Subramanier.) __________ From all that has been set forth above it is easy to deduce what is the Hierarchy of the Lord Himself: Krishna, Christ, etc.; that of an "Amsa", or part of the Essence of the Lord: Mitra Deva, etc.; and if we went on descending, so to speak, the steps of the Hierarchy, we should arrive at the Instructors, who are generally true Amsas of Masters; at the advanced Disciples, who act partly on their own initiative and partly by the impulse they receive from intimate contact with the Instructor, etc.; and, finally, meditation on what the Western Kabbalah teaches when it speaks of Iodhevauhe, or Adam-Eve, or the "hominal kingdom", makes us understand that, in a certain manner, each human being is also the partial "amsa" of Nara, the divine representative of Human Kind; and each act, fact, object or work of "human creation" is an "amsa" of our internal life — being thus, in an apparently indirect form, a manifestation of the Divine Power and Life itself.
Therefore Suddhas and Martinists, among others, raise their Mystic Song to the Unity of Life. May all Voices learn to Reverence THE SUPREME WORD. PEACE TO THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. Jehel, 8 May 1945. _________ · 17
p. 18Cosmic Influences and Reactions of Living Beings. Influence of Temperature. By Pitágoras S∴I∴ Influences of heat (conclusion): Very variable, however, are the symptoms and the lesions of the tissues in cases where the action of heat works directly upon localised regions of the body.
The surface of the body can be very profoundly altered by contact with solid, liquid or gaseous substances at great temperature (burns), or by the direct action of the solar rays or radiant heat. [Sic: the Spanish prints a1terada, with a numeral.] The effects of the action of these substances are diverse according to the degree of heat, the structure of the region of the body affected, the degree of density of the liquids, the time of action and individual resistance.
Thus it is that these effects, according to their gravity and extension, are classified by general pathology into burns of the first, second, third and fourth degree. In burns of the first degree there is hyperaemia and tumefaction of the skin. In those of the 2nd degree there is hyperaemia and tumefaction with the formation of vesicles.
In those of the 3rd degree there is destruction of tissue by coagulation of the protoplasmic colloid and the formation of an eschar. In those of the 4th degree there is carbonisation of the tissues. If burns of the 3rd and 4th degree — which are the gravest — exceed half the surface of the body, death supervenes inevitably between 6 and 16 hours.
In the case where the lesions affect half the surface of the body, death supervenes between 20 and 36 hours; if they affect a quarter, between 40 and 45 hours; if 1/6, between 44 and 82 hours; and if 1/8, after 92 hours.
Death is produced, according to some, by vasal paralysis; according to others, by the formation of thrombi and embolic occlusion of the vessels by them; or by profound modifications produced in the blood; or, finally, by the formation of toxic substances in the burnt parts, which would produce a shock called anaphylactic.
In reality, death is not produced exclusively by one or another of these causes: it is the logical and fatal resultant of the concomitant action of them all.
The anatomical lesions found in the tissues of those dead in consequence of extensive burns are: general hyperaemia of the internal organs, morphological modifications of the red globules and of the haemoglobin contained in them, increase of the red globules per cubic millimetre, thrombo-embolic clots, parenchymatous alterations of the internal organs in general and of the kidneys especially, and the falling away of the vasal endothelium.
Heat is — like all the others existing in our universe — an energy in itself indifferent, and therefore its action upon living beings is neither "beneficent" nor "maleficent". These effects cannot, then, be attributed to the energy in itself, but to various causes that work together for their production, many of which exist in living beings.
Moreover, the same destructive or harmful effects that are produced in certain cases are not so in others, although the modality of action be exactly the same; and, finally, while in some those effects may work beneficently, in others they may work in the opposite way. Not to extend ourselves too much, we shall say — as regards man alone — that a destruction of tissues by burning, a fact harmful in itself, can become · 18
p. 19beneficial if it operates on pathological tissues that it is indispensable to eliminate.
Thus, for example, by means of the electric scalpel or the thermocautery the destruction of healthy or pathological tissues is obtained; as also, by means of solar rays concentrated on a determinate part of the body through a lens, the irradiation of humid heat (steam baths) or dry (radiators of various natures) can likewise produce beneficent or harmful effects on determinate beings in determinate conditions of ambience, of season, biological, etc. As regards psychological effects, everyone knows the stimulating effects on the psyche of an agreeable temperature in the spring season, and the depressing ones in the hot days of summer, etc. Influence of cold. — The minimum degree of temperature compatible with life is also quite variable according to living beings.
While plants and poikilothermic animals die when the temperature reaches such an extreme as to freeze the water that serves as the base of protoplasmic life, for other organisms, on the contrary, temperatures below 0º are not at all mortal; so Raoul Pictet has demonstrated, who observed the return to life of fishes frozen at -15º (minus 15°), if the rise of temperature was effected with great care.
With a temperature of -20º (minus 20º), however, death was infallibly produced. Frogs can bear temperatures of -28º, centipedes of -50°, and bacteria, finally, can survive after having undergone a temperature of -100º. As far as man is concerned, we have already said that he lives better at low than at high temperatures.
In effect, the human beings who live in polar temperatures of -50º manifest no symptomatology that could be the expression of a physiological disturbance — provided they can protect the body with adequate clothing to prevent the elimination of the internal heat, and feed themselves with adequate foods that compensate the greater elimination of corporeal heat.
Other factors, however, must be taken into consideration in the physiological disturbances produced by cold when this is only a few degrees below 0º. [Sic: the zero is printed as a letter O.] They are: old age — in which, through the weakening of all the organic functions, the mechanism of self-regulation of the internal temperature also weakens; infancy, in which that mechanism is weak through the slight organic resistance of the body in formation; and physical and physiological misery, fatigue, alcoholism, etc., which have their influence by diminishing more or less considerably the physiological resistance and, consequently, the mechanism of self-regulation of temperature.
It must further be borne in mind that the hygrometric state of the air, the humidity of the soil and the winds favour the action of cold, while dry air and the absence of winds permit low temperatures to be better borne.
Leaving aside the diseases called rheumatic, of which we have already spoken, and in which cold exerts its importance as a contributory cause — every chilling of the body is likewise a contributory factor in the aetiology of many diseases; for, as the body's temperature diminishes, its defensive powers diminish too, and especially the phagocytic activity of the leucocytes, so that infectious diseases, through the predominance of bacterial activity, can manifest themselves better.
p. 20In these cases the metabolism and the functional activity of all the organs diminish, the activity of the sudoriparous glands is null and the elimination of toxic substances is suspended — there being produced thus a greater renal labour to compensate the diminution of the elimination of toxic substances by the sudoriparous way, with its consequent morbid manifestations. [Sic: the Spanish prints g1ándulas, with a numeral.] The local action of cold is very variable according to the region affected, its vital resistance and the intensity of the low temperature.
We have already said that the freezing of the protoplasmic water produces profound modifications in the morphological organisation of the protoplasm which, after thawing, can no longer be the base of the vital functions of the cell and, consequently, its death is produced. [Sic: the Spanish prints de1, with a numeral.] The cells of the tissues that have undergone that disorganisation are, then, dead by necrosis, as it is called in medical terminology.
But the local action of cold can also provoke grave alterations — improperly called freezings — although the temperature of the ambience does not descend below 0º; for in this case, the difficulty and even the suppression of the local blood circulation reduces or withdraws the "life" that the blood brings to the tissues of that region.
The regions of the body most frequently subject to freezings are those that are habitually uncovered, like the ears and the nose, or those that are furthest from the centre of the circulation, like the hands and the feet. As with burns, degrees are likewise distinguished in freezings. In freezings of the 1st degree, erythema is found, tumefaction, diminution of sensitivity and, later, a slight tingling and pain.
In freezings of the 2nd degree there is formation of vesicles, oedema, aqueous infiltration of the dermis — which separates from the epidermis — and ulcerations.
In freezings of the 3rd degree there is necrosis of the tissues, which can go as far as the total gangrene of a limb. [Sic: the Spanish prints coagulaciones, for congelaciones.] As regards the pathogenesis of freezings, we may say that, at the beginning, there is a spasm of the small arteries — the greater, the smaller and more superficial they are.
This spasm is not of a reflex nature, but is produced by the direct action of cold on the muscular tunics of the arteries. The spasm is followed by vasal dilation, and this by the necrosis which, as we have said, may be followed by gangrene if infection sets in.
Naturally, the defensive powers of the organism come into action to re-establish the equilibrium; and that is why, around the whole necrosed region, a delimiting zone of defence is formed, to which the blood comes abundantly with its "life" and its leucocytes, that they may phagocytise the dead substances — consequently foreign to the organism.
This defensive action of the organism is followed, afterwards, by the neoformation of connective tissue to repair the losses of tissue and, finally, by cicatrisation. Like heat, cold is in itself indifferent; and therefore local applications of ice, of cold compresses, carbonic snow, etc., can, in determinate pathological conditions, play a therapeutic and beneficent role.
p. 21THY PATH. By Ramanuja, S. I. [Sic: the ordinal letter is printed as a numeral one.] The evolutionary state of humanity — however advanced it may seem to many — is such that man has not yet succeeded in breaking the most elementary bonds that deprive him of the liberty of deciding for himself about his own life.
Without much risk it may be affirmed that the great majority of the acts man performs obey reasons foreign to his own conscience. [Sic: the Spanish prints e1, with a numeral.] The environment acts upon us, and we respond almost always by reaction and very seldom with intelligence or — what is more important still — with will placed at the service of that intelligence.
The comfortable, the easy, what brings no complications, is the simplest to gear into the wheel of the times; and no one seems to care that it is precisely this that enslaves our dearest aspirations, that annuls the very essence of what each individual is conscious he ought to be. Let us be capable of giving our life if anyone presumes to give us the name of slaves — at the same time that we live enslaved without concern.
It seems logical that in a world of appearances it should be appearances that govern things; the only lamentable thing is that the world is, in spite of appearances — and sooner or later the government of what is arrives.
The very people who vociferate against the dictators who would deprive us of liberty have not yet been capable of understanding that true liberty depends only in the smallest degree on external causes. [Sic: the Spanish prints liberad, for libertad.] No one can deprive of liberty him who is inwardly free.
It is only necessary to appreciate something more than the form of things to understand the terrible slavery to which our own passions submit us. Is it not true, perhaps, that we live dominated far more by our egoism and our own indolence than by anyone's will? When will man realise that his happiness does not depend on how much he has, but on how much he is capable of not having?
Egoism is so false that it suffices that it should have made us attain a thing for that thing to cease to matter to us. For man's good fortune, conscience evolves in spite of the passions — perhaps more exactly with the very passions — and what man attains in conscience is permanent: hence the secret of happiness consists in nothing more than acting in accordance with our conscience.
He who satisfies a passion does nothing but live a moment, of which there will remain to him only the physical consequences and the reactions of his own conscience — which may be, as regards the life of the man, of permanent disapproval. It is true that to attain happiness it is not enough to act in accordance with conscience; but it is also true that not to do so is a permanent motive of unhappiness.
If we human beings were capable of feeling these truths — which each one can and ought to draw from the experience of his own life — we should give much less importance to all those things that have no more permanence than the beautiful light of a shooting star in the firmament.
p. 22We understand that we are going to die, but we do not feel it; that is why it is so easy for us to forget the problem of death, and we live as if we were not going to die. It is true that we shall not die for the eternal; but we shall indeed die for this life.
If we felt those realities permanently, many of the fantasies of this world would collapse before us like a house of cards, and the orientation of our existence would take very different courses. [Sic: the Spanish prints arte, for ante.] He who consciously works for the eternal carries in himself the certainty of knowing, at least, that he goes by a road — a road on which he learns that it is only possible to march with a pure heart and a mind ample and exempt from prejudices.
He who lives for the moment can carry in his soul only a faith that has no more stability than the mutable forms that sustain it. ______________ · 22

Comentarios sobre el Primer Grado del Martinismo
Notas histórico-cronológicas sobre la Orden Martinista.
por Pitágoras, S. I.

Maha Boddhi Sangha
MENSAJE PARA EL DÍA DE “LOTO
BLANCO”
Por Upasika (Bikkú) A:: M::

Suddha Dharma Mandalam
Comentarios sobre la Misión del Avatara, SRI B. MITRA DEVA
Instructor del Mundo
¡LOAS A LOS MAHATMAS, SIDDHAS Y GURÚES! ¡GLORIA!

Por Pitágoras S:: I::

sostienen.
