p. 4Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism — Historical-chronological notes on the Martinist Order. by Pitágoras, S.I. (Continuation) 1776—Owing to the activity of the marquis de la Serraz, assisted by Marc Revoire and Joseph Daquin, many persons of high social position — nobles, officers, advocates, physicians, members of the Senate, etc. — were initiated in 1776 in the lodge La Sincerité of Chambery.
Among them we mention Pierre de Montfort, Bernard des Maisons, senator Hipolyte Deville de la Milatiére, the advocate Jean Baptiste, count de Salteur, and the great French writer Joseph de Maistre, brother of that other great writer who was Xavier de Maistre.
31 May — The tireless activity of Jean-Baptiste Willermoz in the Strict Observance had not diminished his activity in French masonry and, in effect, after some months of negotiations with the Grand Orient of France — negotiations in which Bacon de la Chevalerie and the abbé Rozier played an important role — there was concluded, on 31 May, a treaty of union between the Grand Orient of France and the three Directories of the three French Provinces (Lyon, Bordeaux and Strasbourg) of the Strict Observance.
In that treaty, signed by the duke of Chartres, the Grand Orient recognised the Strict Observance. Owing to the incompatibility existing between the principles of French masonry and those of the Strict Observance, it was not possible, however — in spite of the signed treaty — to obtain a true fraternal understanding.
The struggles and dissensions thus continued for a long time until, after many negotiations, it was possible, in the second half of 1779, to make union and peace reign among the lodges of the different systems. In the discharge of all these harmonising negotiations the martinists Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, Paganucci, Bacon de la Chevalerie, the abbé Rozier, Belz and Perisse Du Luc distinguished themselves.
December — After the death of Baron von Weiler at Turin on 19 November 1775 — through whom relations were maintained between the Grand Provincial Chapter of Lyon and the Grand Master of the Order, Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick — these continued through Baron Charles von Hundt until the end of 1.776, the year in which, owing to his death at Melrichstadt, they continued through Christian Ehrbrechl, baron de Durkeim, minister of the ducal court of Saxe-Meiningen and Commissary of the Chapter of the Province of Bourgogne. [Sic: the year is printed with a full stop, 1.776.] 1777 — February — In a congress held in this month, promoted by the duke of Brunswick and attended by the duke of Saxe and another 24 brothers, there was resolved, among other things, the adhesion of the Illuminati of Sweden to the Strict Observance.
p. 5March — In spite of the rapid progress of the Strict Observance in Europe, many dissensions and struggles between the members of the Order and the profane, and among the members themselves, provoked little by little a slow disgregation and decadence of the Order.
Ferdinand of Brunswick strove, convoking meeting after meeting, to obtain, if not the cohesion that was lacking, at least a little order and tranquillity; and that is why, in this month, he had manifested to J. B.
Willermoz, through the baron de Durkeim, his desire that the brothers of France should gather in a national congress, during which the French provinces would elect their Grand Master and try to resolve all internal affairs, thus preparing themselves to take part in a future general congress of the Order. 1778 —28 August — J. B.
Willermoz — after this request of the duke of Brunswick and the reiterated insistences of the count de Lutzelbourg, dean of the Chapter of Strasbourg, who believed it extremely urgent to establish order and take resolutions of importance — became convinced that it was indeed indispensable to convoke a national congress; the more so as for some time he had been awaiting a propitious occasion to carry into effect a vast programme he silently cherished.
In an important session held on 28 August 1778, he set forth to the brothers of the Grand Chapter of the Province of Auvergne the situation of the Order, and stated the reasons that counselled the convocation, at Lyon, of a national congress in which all the French provinces should take part.
All were in agreement and decided to convoke that congress, which was denominated the Grand Congress of the Gauls, for 28 October 1778. __________________ Before continuing our chronological exposition and occupying ourselves with this Congress and the results obtained in it, we must open a parenthesis to set forth what were the secret designs that J. B. Willermoz desired to realise.
It was not only the longing to establish order and consolidate the organisation of the Strict Observance that made him take the resolution of convoking the congress. For a long time already, Jean-Baptiste had cherished the project of infusing into masonry the doctrinal content of the Order of the Elect Cohens, and only waited patiently for the opportunity to present itself.
That opportunity presented itself at last in 1778, and he, as we shall see, very skilfully took advantage of it.
Already during the stay of Rodolphe Saltzmann in Lyon, between December 1777 and January 1778, Willermoz had communicated to him — besides the whole programme of the administrative and liturgical reform of the Order — that idea of his kept in the most absolute secrecy for a long time: that of wishing to add a new degree to the symbolic ones that already existed, a degree in which the doctrine of Martines de Pasqually was to be taught.
Rodolphe Saltzmann — a deeply religious spirit and a man of exemplary seriousness, Master of the Novices [Sic: the Spanish prints 1os, with a numeral] in the Directory of the Chapter of Strasbourg — had gone to Lyon to discuss with Willermoz all those modifications it was suitable to bring to the Strict Observance, of administrative as well as of liturgical character.
p. 6reforms of an administrative and liturgical nature, and Saltzmann, in his turn, would help Willermoz to obtain the creation of the new degree. This degree, called the Profession, in reality comprised two: Knight Professed and Grand Professed.
In it Willermoz proposed to teach "the scientific part relative to primitive masonry". [Sic: the Spanish prints ensañar, for enseñar.] In effect, and as we have said, this "scientific part" was nothing other than the doctrine of the Reintegration of Martines de Pasqually — a doctrine already taught in the elevated degrees of the Cohens.
It was, then, the skilful incorporation into Hundt's templar freemasonry of the doctrine of the Cohens; it was to constitute, in the bosom of that masonry, an "élite" formed of select spirits worthy of knowing and understanding the doctrine which, in hermetic form, was taught in the Cohen Chapters.
It was, in a word, the continuation of the Order of the Elect Cohens within the Strict Observance — the beginning of the Willermozist movement. ______________ Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya, S. I. We shall study today the influences of the 12th zodiacal sign: PISCIS, or The Fishes.
This sign symbolises the flood — principally because, when the Sun passes through this constellation, the rainy season begins (in the Northern hemisphere), washing away the snows of winter which, on melting, are transformed into torrents that flood the valleys and low regions. This sign is also the end of Apollo's journey through the twelve signs. "Near their beloved waves remain the cold fishes; they join the Ram and complete the cycle".
Kabbalistically, the sign of Pisces indicates the feet of the Grand Cosmic Man, and thereby represents the base or foundation of all external things, as well as the mechanical forces of humanity. It is the natural emblem of patient servitude and of obedience.
On the esoteric planisphere, this sign is occupied by Ephraim and Manasseh, the two sons of Joseph, who received their portion in Israel as being the two feet of the Grand Archetypal Man. [Sic: the Spanish prints las dos hijas, the two daughters.] This sign also indicates to us the divine project of the great cycle of necessity — begun with the eruptive, dazzling and dominating fire of Aries, to end at the opposite pole, water, symbol of universal equilibrium. [Sic: the Spanish prints cielo for ciclo, and Artes for Aries.] The mystic gem of Pisces is the chrysolite (white and refulgent).
Pisces is the last emanation of the trigon of Water and the domicile of Neptune (and that of Jupiter in nocturnal birth, according to traditional astrology). On the intellectual plane, Pisces represents mental indifference. It is the pole opposite the head.
Those who are governed by its influence manifest a particular indifference toward all that generally interests others. They take all things as they come, paying attention to none. They live and die according to the words of Saint Paul: "being all things to all men".
p. 7On the physical plane, this sign gives a short body, with abundant flesh, dark hair, pale complexion, "humid" eyes, somewhat dull, like those of fishes; a negative character, timid, inoffensive and unconcerned. It gives persons of peaceable nature, whose conduct is influenced by their friendships and by the ambience. Among plants, this sign rules: all the marine herbs, ferns and aquatic mosses.
Among stones: coral, marine rock, pumice stone, sand and gravel. Such are the teachings which, on Pisces, J. Burgoyne, the Rosicrucian author of "Light of Egypt", gives us.
THE DECANATES OF PISCES ON THE ASCENDANT (according to Julevno). Pisces characterises, in a general way, persons of medium or small stature, somewhat corpulent, with a pale face whose gaze is dull and as if drowsy, with chestnut hair. [Sic: the Spanish prints estatua, statue, for estatura.] The arms and legs are usually short, the shoulders low and round, and the constitution rather weak or sickly.
The character oscillates from indolent to lazy, of little energy, fond of comfort and rest. The person is of slow intelligence and with a tendency to drink. This sign governs the feet and is under the dominion of Jupiter and of Neptune.
The first decanate (first 10 degrees) is ruled by Saturn and indicates a religious character, even fanatical, enthusiastic, but without practical activity. This decanate also prognosticates: false friends, difficulties and disturbances in one's position, worries proceeding from children, danger of drowning, quarrels, premature death or grave illness of one of the person's relatives.
The second decanate (degrees 11 to 20) is under the influence of Jupiter and indicates: a good person, intelligent, very sympathetic, but lacking constancy. This decanate usually affords a good situation, success, two marriages or inconstancy in matrimony. It also indicates eminent friends, some distinctions, riches or gains through the person's position and merits.
The third decanate (degrees 21 to 30) is under the influence of Mars and indicates a variable character, timid at certain moments and audacious at others, easily influenced by the opposite sex; a religious, poetic and loving person, but inconstant.
It also indicates struggles and vicissitudes in fortune and position, help from powerful friends, disturbances in marriage and worries over children; possible success in a foreign country, but with constant danger.
THE FACES OF PISCES (divisions of 5 degrees), according to classical opinions gathered by Dr. Salmón, indicate: 1st FACE (0.º to 5.°): Medium stature, strong shoulders, a thin and elongated face, dark hair, sunken eyes, a large nose, a wide mouth and a narrow or pointed chin. When Mars is found in this face, there is danger of smallpox marks. This face indicates diviners and prophets, according to the evolution that incarnates in it.
2nd FACE (6° to 10.°): This face indicates a person of taller stature than the preceding. The face is fuller, the complexion lighter and the aspect more agreeable. The hair is lighter chestnut, the eyebrows abundant, the mouth wide, and the fingers, arms, legs and feet long. Mars in this face indicates smallpox marks, but grants good moral qualities, as well as aptitudes for magnetism.
p. 83rd FACE (11.° to 15°): Indicates a person of more abundant flesh, more agreeable aspect, a full and oval face, beautiful broad eyebrows and a developed forehead. A person of rather small stature; straight, and not very thick of waist. If Saturn, Venus or the Dragon's Tail are found in this face, they will indicate a wandering, agitated, vagabond life and a mediocre intelligence.
4th FACE (16.° to 20.°): Medium stature, an elongated and freckled face, a broad forehead and abundant eyebrows, small eyes, dark or black, a narrow chin. The hair is black and at times wavy, and the arms, hands and feet are small. 5th FACE (21.° to 25.°): A very well proportioned person, regular features, a rounded face, greyish eyes, a fleshy well-made nose, a dimpled chin, a good and smiling aspect and dark hair.
Degree 25 makes the person paler and extremely amiable. Degree 22 contains the fixed star Markab, which announces violent accidents and wounds by fire, electricity or steam. 6th FACE (26.° to 30.°): A small person, slight, weak or thin.
The face is marked by freckles or pimples and at times by small spots; the complexion is dark and the hair dark.
This face contains the fixed star Scheat of Pegasus, which is violent, of the vibration of Saturn, and prognosticates danger of death by water. [Sic: printed Scheal.] INFLUENCES OF THE FACES OF PISCES ON THE ASCENDANT (according to old authors). lst FACE [Sic: the ordinal is printed with a letter ell]: A dexterous and ingenious person, a lover of study, of arts or sciences — especially astronomy and astrology, in which they may distinguish themselves.
2nd FACE: A prudent person, wise, intelligent, just and honest, calm, who bears injuries with patience, but difficult to appease when he comes to be seized by indignation or wrath. 3rd FACE: A good character, just and honest; but if Saturn, Venus or the Dragon's Tail should be present, there will be a lack of will and of energy.
4th FACE: A loyal, honest and obliging person, of good judgment, good intelligence and inclined to the study of arts and sciences. 5th FACE: An affable person, amiable and frank, good to his friends but implacable with his enemies, who desires the good of human society. 6th FACE: A very intelligent person but somewhat rustic and pretentious, in continual dispute with those who do not share his opinions.
THE FACES OF PISCES ON THE MIDHEAVEN. FIRST: Honours and popular consideration, common and local fame. This is more clearly noted if Saturn or the Dragon's tail is found here, or if this place receives the opposition of Mars.
SECOND: Indicates a modest but happy situation throughout life, with the consideration and esteem of those around. THIRD: Effeminate tastes and disdain for serious occupations. FOURTH: Religious elevation, or a position in the magistracy or the like.
FIFTH: Success through women or the people of the Church. SIXTH: Displeasure, adversities and an existence full of obstacles and misery. · 8
p. 9Is it possible to prolong youth? Does there exist a Spiritual Alchemy capable of restoring our youth? – Causes of old age and of death. By Asuri Kapila, S.
I. What are the chemical qualities of the elements, and the role they play in our organism? It must be remembered that the human body is composed of a quantity of substances entering into the constitution of the cellular protoplasm, which may be classified into INORGANIC SUBSTANCES (water, mineral salts and some gases) and ORGANIC SUBSTANCES (carbohydrates, fats, protein substances, besides ferments and vitamins).
All these substances are composed of 22 elements: 12 principal and 10 secondary. The principal ones are: CARBON, SULPHUR, NITROGEN, HYDROGEN, OXYGEN, PHOSPHORUS, CHLORINE, POTASSIUM, SODIUM, MAGNESIUM, CALCIUM, IRON. The secondary ones are SILICON, FLUORINE, BROMINE, IODINE, ALUMINIUM, MANGANESE, LITHIUM, COPPER, LEAD and ZINC.
Carbon — It is the principal element of the organism, in which it is found in a proportion of almost 50 %. It enters into the constitution of the greater part of the organic substances and of many inorganic ones. We introduce it daily in a quantity of almost 280 grammes, and eliminate it in great part through respiration, in the form of carbonic acid.
It is found in almost all foods of vegetable and animal origin.
Sulphur — It enters into the constitution of the protein substances and their derivatives; it is found combined in the salts in the form of alkaline sulphates (which exist in the blood and in the greater part of the tissues and liquids, with the exception of the bile and gastric juice), alkaline hyposulphites, sulphocyanide of K and of Na (saliva, blood, etc.), sulphide of iron, etc. It is found, moreover, in the intestine, combined with H in the state of H2S.
It is indispensable for the formation of the tendons and cartilages; it plays an important role in the cure of rheumatism and diseases of the skin; it facilitates the elimination of toxic substances, tones the nerves and makes the hair grow. The sulphur we have to assimilate must proceed from raw and not from cooked foods, for that which comes from the latter provokes intestinal disturbances with the production of gases.
Avoid, consequently, hard-boiled eggs and boiled cabbage. Assimilable sulphur abounds in green beans, carrots, plums, fresh and dried figs, egg yolks (raw), raw onions, radishes and wholemeal bread, boiled turnips, boiled cauliflower and broccoli. Nitrogen — It enters into the constitution of the protein substances and of the nitrogenous products deriving from them.
It is found in the free state in the respiratory passages and digestive tube, coming almost entirely from the atmospheric air breathed or swallowed. It is found in the state of solution in the blood and other liquids of the organism. [Sic: the Spanish prints 1a, with a numeral.] It acts as an attenuator of the oxidising action of oxygen.
Hydrogen — It enters into the constitution of all the organic substances and of a certain number of inorganic ones. It is found in the free state in the expired air, in the intestinal tube and in the gaseous products of cutaneous perspiration. We introduce it daily with foods and drinks in a quantity of almost 40 grammes, and eliminate it · 9
p. 10in approximately the same quantity as that introduced, through the various ways of elimination, either in the form of water and NH3 or in the form of complex combinations in the catabolic products. Oxygen — It enters into the constitution of almost all the organic substances and of many inorganic ones, among which principally water.
It exists weakly combined with the haemoglobin of the red globules, constituting oxyhaemoglobin; in the state of solution in the blood plasma, lymph and other liquids of the organism; in the state of free gas in the airways, and in small quantity in the upper part of the digestive tube. We introduce it with the air and with foods.
Phosphorus — It enters into the constitution of the nucleins and lecithin, and into many phosphates, among them those of Na, K, Mg, Ca, etc. The phosphates of K are found in the muscles, cells in general and brain; those of Ca in milk, bones and teeth. Phosphorus is introduced with organic and inorganic foods, and is eliminated with the urine and faeces in the form of phosphoric acid.
The physiological function of the phosphates is very important, as is indicated by their presence in all the tissues and their predominance in the red globules, muscles, nerves and growing cells.
In the blood, the alkaline phosphates — and especially the phosphate of sodium — contribute to maintaining alkalinity, favour the solution of the protein substances and exert influence on the absorption of CO2 by the blood, etc. The lack of phosphorus in the organism translates into nervous depression, hysteria, neurosis and mental dullness.
The foods rich in phosphorus are: coconut, olives, grapes, strawberries, chestnuts, apples, pears, cherries, oranges, lettuce, escarole, potatoes, spinach, cauliflower, onions, radishes, carrots, cucumbers, artichokes, milk, beans, fresh cheeses, lentils, chickpeas, barley, maize flour, oats, wholemeal bread, walnuts, squash, almonds, whole wheat, rye and egg yolks — in which it reaches as much as 70 %.
Phosphorus, too, must be introduced in organic form, for otherwise it produces a series of grave disturbances, chiefly of the nervous system.
Chlorine — It is found in the free state, or combined with three protein substances, in the gastric juice. [Sic: the Spanish prints tres; the sense wants las.] This intestinal chlorine combines again with the alkalis and is reabsorbed, returning to the blood whence it had come, in the form of sodium chloride. It is found in the form of chloride of Na, K and Ca in all the liquids and tissues of the body.
These chlorides are in great part in solution, but are also combined with the protein substances. Chlorine is a purifying element and a great cellular stimulant. The deficiency of chlorine translates into nervousness, catarrhs and colds, intestinal congestion, pallor of countenance, bad humour, fear, anxiety, pyorrhoea and albuminuria.
The foods rich in chlorine are: carrots, lettuces, spinach, radishes, beetroot, lentils, asparagus, mushrooms, cucumbers and egg yolks. Potassium — Potassium is found in the organism, in greater or lesser quantity, in all the tissues and liquids, combined with the inorganic and organic acids. The most important combination of potassium is the chloride of K, which everywhere accompanies the chloride of sodium.
p. 11The role played by the salts of K is very important. In small doses they excite circulatory activity, raise the blood pressure, accelerate and reinforce the contractions of the heart. [Sic: the Spanish prints circu1atoria, with a numeral.] In larger doses they are powerful poisons for the protoplasm, and particularly for the muscular cells. They exert an action stimulating rather than nutritive, and facilitate the fermentation of sugar.
The lack of potassium translates into muscular and cerebral decay, thinness and constipation. The foods richest in potassium are: egg yolks, coconuts, lentils, peas, olives, chestnuts, cherries, tomatoes, blackberries, potatoes, apples, lettuces, radishes, cucumbers, artichokes, carrots, onions, plums, grapes, cherries, pears, rye, oranges. Sodium — Sodium is found in the human being in combinations similar to those of potassium.
The most important is sodium chloride, which is found preferentially in the organic liquids, such as blood plasma, lymph, bile, sweat, pancreatic juice and urine. The general quantity existing in the organism reaches more or less 200 grammes. Sodium chloride comes entirely from feeding, in the approximate quantity of 15 or 20 grammes daily.
It is eliminated through the urine in almost the same proportion, and in part through the sweat, saliva, mucus and faeces. The role played by sodium chloride is most important. [Sic: the Spanish prints E1, with a numeral.] It facilitates the osmotic phenomena, the disassimilation of the protein substances and the elimination of urea through the urine, as well as the elimination of the urine itself.
It is found in plums, almonds, rye flour, maize flour, beans, wholemeal bread, oats, coconut, wheat, barley, cherries, walnuts, lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes, strawberries, squashes, apples, fresh cheeses, eggs, lentils, oranges, escaroles, pears, artichokes, chestnuts and cucumbers. The foods richest in sodium are carrots and spinach, in which the sodium content is almost 60 %.
Magnesium — It is found in the organism in the state of phosphate and carbonate. The former always accompanies the phosphate of Ca and, in the muscles and thymus, is found in greater quantity than the latter. It is introduced through foods in general and eliminated in part through the urine and faeces.
It plays a very important role in the organism, not yet well known. Its lack provokes mental disturbances, neurasthenia, vertigo, nervousness, bad humour, insomnia, constipation and a hyperaesthesia of the tissues in general.
It is found in abundance in all the citrus fruits — oranges, grapefruits, limes, lemons — and moreover in strawberries, pineapples, egg yolks (raw), milk (raw), cream, apples, peaches, grapes, cherries, walnuts, whole wheat, oats, dried fruits, spinach, coconut, almonds, chestnuts, blackberries and raw greens in general.
Calcium — It is found in the organism in the state of fluoride, phosphate, carbonate, sulphate, oxalate, citrate, etc. The fluoride of Ca is found in the bones, with traces in the blood, milk and brain; the phosphate of Ca is found in the tissues and liquids; the carbonate of Ca is found in the otoliths, urine, bones, teeth, etc.; the chloride of Ca is found in the gastric juice; the sulphate of Ca derives probably from the oxidation of the proteins; and the urates and oxalates are found in the sediments of the urine, and the citrate in milk. [Sic: the Spanish prints 1a, with a numeral.] The greater quantity of calcium comes from foods, especially vegetable, and from water.
p. 12In our youth we need calcium for the formation of the bones and teeth; only when our body is developed is so much calcium no longer necessary, because in excess it hardens the arteries, cartilages and tissues in general, there being produced then a process called calcification, which brings as consequence the formation of calculi, lack of flexibility of the joints and a whole series of disturbances already studied in previous numbers of this review.
Thus the lack of calcium, especially in children, translates into defective teeth, defective, twisted legs, bone malformations, predisposition to tuberculosis, premature old age and a short life. The foods rich in calcium are fresh cheeses, egg yolks, milk, wheat, lemons, peaches, oranges, plums, spinach, onions, strawberries and especially lettuces, carrots, olives and wholemeal bread.
The fixer of calcium is the lemon, and that is why it is advisable to take lemon juice every day, fasting, to fix the calcium in the tissues of all those persons who need it.
The only assimilable calcium is that which comes from vegetable feeding and, above all, from the foods described above; for inorganic or mineral calcium (such as it is customary to give by injections) is in general not assimilated, and only comes to deposit itself in the tissues, producing disturbances of various kinds.
Iron — It is found in the organism always in organic combination: in the haemoglobin of the red globules; in the hepatin, ferratin and other albuminates of the liver, spleen and bone marrow; in some pigments coming from haemoglobin (melanins, etc.); in the hair, eyes, chyle, lymph, bile, milk, urine, gastric juice, etc. The function of iron in the organism is most important, for it serves as vehicle to oxygen which, through its gentle combination with haemoglobin, is transported to the whole organism. [Sic: the Spanish prints a1, with a numeral.] The iron introduced into our organism comes from the foods rich in this element, such as peas, beetroots, fresh broad beans, green beans, olives, maize, rice, apples, cucumbers, carrots, watercress, potatoes, egg yolks, barley, walnuts, lettuce, plums, cherries, radishes, onions, artichokes, lentils, wheat and, above all, spinach.
Its elimination takes place through the urine and faeces. True deposits of iron in the organism are the liver and the spleen, which attract the iron circulating in the blood like true magnets.
The lack of iron produces anaemia, weakness, insomnia, chlorosis, vertigo, deficiencies of memory, incapacity of the mind to concentrate, cold extremities, etc. Silicon — Silicon is found, in the form of silicon dioxide, in the hair, bones, bile, urine, cartilages, pancreas, crystalline lens of the eyes, tendons, etc. [Sic: the Spanish prints 1a, with a numeral.] Its function is to absorb gases, alkalinise acid media, be a true natural organic antiseptic, tone the sexual organs and the arteries and nerves.
It is, then, a powerful anti-arteriosclerotic and anti-rachitic; it is extremely necessary for the nervously exhausted, and it is what gives brightness to the eyes, nails and teeth. Silicon abounds in the following foods: egg yolks (raw), escarole, watercress, walnuts, pine-nuts, whole wheat, oats, pomegranates, strawberries, apples, grapes, cherries, peaches, carrots, spinach, raw cabbage, tomatoes, whole rice and barley.
p. 13and manifests an action against calculi of the kidneys and bladder, against the dilation of the veins, paralysis, tuberculosis, syphilis and other venereal diseases. It abounds in the following foods: onions, garlic, beetroots, whole wheat, spinach, oats, apples and egg yolks. Bromine — It is found in the suprarenal glands, hypophysis, liver, thyroid and nails.
Its function in the organism is unknown. Iodine — It is found in the blood and thyroid. It is found in the following foods: potatoes, radishes, lettuces, black grapes, watermelons, fresh broad beans, pomegranates, green beans, strawberries, oranges, pineapples, egg yolks (raw), apples, peas, tomatoes, garlic, onions, artichokes and mushrooms.
The lack of iodine in our organism translates into hypertrophy of the thyroid, producing endemic goitre and Basedow's disease, and alterations of the nervous system, such as cardiac palpitations, timidity, excitability, emotivity and even idiocy. Aluminium — Traces are found in the ashes of the tissues. Its function in the organism is unknown.
Manganese — It is found in the blood, bile, hair, milk, bones and urine. It is generally together with iron. It abounds in the following foods: parsley, hazelnuts, almonds, egg yolks (raw), escarole, watercress, walnuts, pine-nuts and almost all greens.
Its deficiency in our organism translates into amnesia, confusion and mental dullness, states of madness or violent mental and physical excitations — which leads one to suppose that it must play an important role in the toning of the whole nervous system. Lithium — It is found in traces in the ashes of the tissues. Its function in the organism is unknown.
Copper — Lead — Zinc — They are found in the liver and bile. Function unknown. We may draw from all that has been set forth the following conclusions: 1) Every physical and psychic disturbance is the consequence of a partial or total lack of one or more elements.
2) Every emotive state is a cry of alarm from our organism asking for calcium, fluorine, magnesium, etc. 3) We must choose our foods, not eating just anything, but exclusively, and in the just quantity, what our undegenerate instinct asks. 4) Eat natural foods elaborated by Nature, and not artificial ones elaborated by man. The former are the only ones that possess the life necessary for our organism.
Let readers remember that rock crystal, like precious stones, possesses brilliance, electricity and magnetism, while synthetic, artificial crystal and stones lack brilliance, electricity and magnetism. Health in Bodies, Peace in Hearts and fraternal Union among all Beings. (To be continued). · 13

As this Venerable Fraternity begins its visible activity in the present year, it makes vows that the Light of the Wisdom of the Holy Buddha may be the refuge of those who long for knowledge, of those who suffer and are ignorant of the cause of their sorrows, of those who, being on the Path, desire to accelerate their evolution; and it makes vows also that the unalterable peace which its profound doctrine teaches us may be for all a constant realisation and profound Truth.
May the blessing of the Venerable and Holy Buddha — Sublime and Perfect in his Great Wisdom, Master of Compassion — descend upon all beings, that Peace may be a Reality, Love a Truth, and Fraternity the common and noble longing of all Humanity.
Let us meditate with deep devotion on the Holy Name of the Buddha, and invoke his Luminous Presence with the Sacred mantram NAMAH OM KWAZEON every Sunday at 10 in the morning and at 4 in the afternoon (Uruguayan time), when the Servers of the Buddha gather in their hidden Ashrams of the Cordillera; and every Thursday at 9 at night in the G.I.D.E.E. of Montevideo, where a course of Buddhism is given and his Holy Name is venerated (See No.
34 of La Iniciación). Let us meditate on — practising them — some essential points of the doctrine that HE taught for the realisation of the Path: Abstention from lying — Neither for one's own advantage, nor to favour the interests of others, nor to second any other class of interests.
Abstention from gossip — What has been heard here, let it not be repeated there, so as not to occasion discords and distrusts; and what has been heard there, let it not be repeated here, so as not to occasion confusions and hatreds. Acting thus, one draws together those who are distanced and, moreover, consolidates those who are already united, becoming an instrument of harmonisation.
Abstention from harsh language - To pronounce only words free of rudeness, agreeable to the ear, cordial, courteous, obliging, congratulatory and elevated. He who does not know how to use sweet and amiable language toward others is not yet on the Path. A soft, affable and fraternal word can save a life and show the Way to one who has lost everything. · 14
p. 15Abstention from useless conversations — One must speak opportunely, in accordance with the facts, and speak with regard to constructive things. The Buddha said: "Either the conversation refers to the Truth, or a holy silence must be observed". p. 16Suddha Dharma Mandalam. The Avatara of BHAGAVAN MITRA DEVA, Instructor of the World. In this article we shall make known the Instructions for the Celebration of the Full Moon of Vaisaka; but first, and as a reverent homage to our Guru — the gentle, pure, wise and humble Swami Subramaniananda — we wish to reproduce the text of a Circular that the Guru sent to all the Members of the S.
D. M., in which he announced, six days in advance, the Birth of the Avatara Sri Bhagavan Mitra Deva. May it be a theme of meditation and reverence for all Disciples.
It runs thus: "Suddha Dharma Mandalam— Subhamastu Sarvajagatam Namasté Mahadbhya, Siddhebyo, Gurubyascha, Namó, Nahmá— On the 16th of the present month, One of the elevated members of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam will reincarnate in order to carry out, by himself, a work for the good of the world. [Sic: the Spanish prints E1, with a numeral.] This day, therefore, is worthy of being kept by all the members of the Mandalam; let them have the goodness to celebrate it as such.
At about 6 ½ P.M., after the customary daily Anushatanam, the members shall offer a supplication in their own language to Yoga Devi and to the Hierarchs of the Mandalam, that prosperity may be granted to the whole world. The house shall be adorned with lights, as much as possible, as a demonstration of the joy felt on such an occasion. Let a feast be celebrated that same night, in harmony with the circumstances.
Beach House, Mylapore, Madras, 10 January 1919… (Signed): S. Subramaniem. OBSERVANCES OF THE [Sic: the Spanish prints DEI. for DEL.] FULL MOON OF VAISAKA.
On the night of Saturday 26 May, the Members of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam must bathe before sunset (on the Saturday), having fasted all that day.
Besides the practice or meditation they may have done on the Saturday morning, they will again do their daily meditation or practice at night, before the hour fixed for the Ceremony of the Full Moon of Vaisaka; and at that hour they will be in the Ashram where the celebration is to be held — or, if it were not possible for them to attend, they will join it from their homes or a suitable place. · 16
p. 17At 1 and 48 (Greenwich Mean Time1) of the 27th they must sit in the Ashram — or suitable place — facing north.
In the centre of the place of ceremony, or before each isolated member, there shall be a vegetable leaf, and in its centre must be placed — without touching the ground — a clean metal vessel, fairly wide of mouth, three-quarters full of limpid water. [Sic: the Spanish prints sue1o, with a numeral.] Two fragrant red flowers (whose significance the Members know) shall be put in the vessel.
On the right side, white and fragrant flowers shall be kept on a clean plate. The Members are to think of their Instructor, of the Guru, and of this: that before them are gathered in Assembly the Siddhas belonging to the Suddha Dharma Mandalam, celebrating rites for the good of the world for the next twelve months.
Then, with joined hands, they will repeat the verses given further on, and will offer one of the white flowers, placing it in the vessel after reciting each verse. The recitation of the verses we publish today being finished, they will remain in meditation and adoration for more than 30 minutes.
That lapse (more or less) being past, the Officiant of each Ashram (or the isolated member) will recite the 10 verses published on page number 22 of La Iniciación number 35 and, immediately after, the 6 stanzas published in the review of April 19442. [Sic: the Spanish prints ais1ado, with a numeral.] A new adorative stillness, and whatever is spontaneously translated into mudras, etc., by those present, will serve as closure of the Celebration.
Each Disciple will afterwards make a written account of his impressions or perceptions and hand it to the Officiant of his Ashram (or send it to him, if he should have been obliged to perform the Celebration in isolation).
Such celebrations shall be made with soft light during the Celebration, which may be preceded by suitable music (Handel's Largo, Clair de Lune, etc.). ______________ That Celebration ended, the fast may be broken with a sweet and light diet, festively celebrating the fraternal gathering, illuminating the place in sign of rejoicing.
At night (the night of Sunday to Monday), at 22.30, Uruguayan time, after bathing, each Member — in isolation, or again gathered in their Ashrams — placing themselves facing the East and, if possible, exposed to the Light of the Moon, will recite the versicles we give further on; and then, in absolute stillness and repose, they may ask that they be permitted to unite themselves internally, and in the appropriate place, to the Great Celebration, to offer their Service in aid of the Mission of the Avatara and receive internally the seed of what they must realise in the immediate future. [Sic: the Spanish prints semil1a, with a numeral.] That offering made, with mind and heart, they must give themselves to adorative meditation and let themselves be carried… 1 The said Greenwich mean time corresponds to the following civil (clock) times: Argentina: If there are no changes, at the same time as Uruguay.
p. 18What they may have been given to perceive or realise in this second act will also be recorded in their individual accounts, to be handed to the Officiant of their respective Ashrams, to be sent to the Instructor. May the Blessing of the Guru be with All and Each One. Jehel ______________ VERSICLES3.
I.—In the Visala region of Badari, the Mahatmas, who ever watch over the welfare of the world, pour out their blessings upon the world at the Full Moon of the Month of Vaisak. p. 20Cosmic Influences and Reactions of Living Beings. Influence of Temperature.
By Pitágoras S∴I∴ …so, besides the symptoms described, others may present themselves, all of a nervous nature — such as paralysis or paresis, hemiplegia, etc. — which at times last a long time or may be permanent. [Editorial gloss: the retype has transposed the article; this paragraph belongs to its close, and the opening resumes below.] At times, death may occur suddenly.
The disturbances described are almost exclusively functional, because the anatomical lesions found in the tissues of the corpses of those dead by heat-stroke or sunstroke are of very— Another modality of energy, which is perceived by living beings in its two polarities of heat and cold according as its intensity is above or below the specific mean existing in them, is what is called temperature. [Editorial gloss: the sentence breaks off mid-word in the retype and the article's true opening follows.] The sources of that characteristic modality of energy are multiple — as for example the combustion of wood, coal, petroleum and other combustible materials; friction between the surfaces of bodies; resistance to an electric current; the deeper layers of the earth; and living beings themselves — but all these sources of thermal radiation are only indirect sources, for they limit themselves to emitting the energy they had previously received from the sun.
So that we may say that the only source of energy — and in our case, thermal energy — is the sun. In effect, if a solar ray falls on a prism of salt — a gem that stops the radiations less than a prism of glass — a visible spectrum is obtained, that is, the decomposition of the solar ray into its constituent elements.
Now, if we explore the visible spectrum with a sensitive thermometer, we find a maximum of temperature in correspondence with the red — that is, in correspondence with those radiations that have 6,980 ångström, or O micron 69; and if we explore outside that visible spectrum, that is, below the red, in the band of the infrared, we likewise obtain a maximum of temperature. [Sic: the micron figure is printed with a letter O.] In other parts of the spectrum, on the contrary, we find lower temperatures.
It was believed in the past that the solar radiations, and especially the thermal one, were more intense the nearer they were to their origin. The myth of Icarus falling into the sea because, wishing to rise too high, the heat of the sun had melted his wings of wax, is a proof of belief in this error.
In reality, the high atmosphere is very cold, as was demonstrated by Prof. Van Bennelen who, having sent up into the sky of Java, in April 1913, a sounding balloon to the height of 17,000 metres, registered a temperature of 91º C. below zero. The radiations emitted by the sun become thermal, then, only when they strike an obstacle that stops them and absorbs or stores them.
That modality of energy called temperature plays a primordial role in the maintenance of life, which at present is very imperfectly known. · 20
p. 21As regards the constitution of climates, we know how temperature exercises a preponderant influence, and we know too how fauna and flora are, in the various parts of the terrestrial surface, in direct dependence on the climate and, consequently, on one of its most important constituent factors: temperature. [Sic: the Spanish prints sanemos, for sabemos.] We all know the exuberance of the tropical flora and the steppes of the cold regions; the variable nature of the various animal species according to the regions in which they live; and the migration of some during certain seasons of the year — that is, during those epochs in which, owing to the inclination of the earth's axis of rotation and the movement of precession of the equinoxes, the intensity of thermal energy on the earth varies.
We know, moreover, how temperature influences the evaporation of the waters on the surface of the soil and of the seas — waters which, transformed into clouds, will fall again upon the soil, fertilising it. All these variations of temperature cannot fail to exercise their influence on living beings which, as is known, possess a delicate mechanism for regulating it, to adapt themselves, within certain limits, to its variations.
To be synthetic, we shall treat of the influences of temperature on living beings, and of their reactions to it, speaking first of the influence exercised by its positive polarity, or heat, and afterwards of that exercised by its negative polarity, or cold. Influence of heat.—We have already said that every living being possesses a specific temperature.
Now, for its life to develop normally, the temperature of the ambience in which it lives must not pass certain limits, for heat as for cold, because its mechanisms for regulating the internal temperature can function only between those limits — which, moreover, vary from being to being. The greater part of vegetable and animal cells cannot live in an ambience where the maximum temperature is above 40º - 47°.
Max Schulze demonstrated that a temperature above 47º provokes the death of vegetable cells, and C. Kühne found that the protoplasm of amoebae coagulates, at times, at 40º. There exist, however, other living beings that tolerate much higher temperatures — such as certain algae that live in thermal waters whose temperature reaches 63°.
Ehrenberg found infusoria that can live at a temperature of 8lº - 85º, and all bacteriologists know that the spores of the anthrax bacillus bear well temperatures above 100º, and that only after three hours at a dry heat of 140° do they surely lose all vitality. [Sic: the first figure is printed with a letter ell.] As can be seen, the maximum limit of temperature at which living beings can live is very variable and, moreover, their power of adaptation to the variations of temperature is also quite different.
As far as man is concerned, the optimum of temperature is also quite variable according to the races and the climates in which he is accustomed to live; but it may be said, in a general manner, that he lives better at low than at high temperatures, and that the latter must not exceed 37º. [Sic: the Spanish prints genera1, with a numeral.] It is true that man can live at higher temperatures; but in that case his mechanisms of regulation must come into function.
p. 22perfectly in this heat without grave disturbances manifesting themselves in his vital functions.
We know, moreover, that those who by their trade must work near places where the production of heat is very great — as for example near the boilers of ships, that is, in an ambience where the heat reaches 60º — can remain for some hours without morbid phenomena presenting themselves, because the mechanisms of self-regulation permit the internal temperature not to rise beyond a normal mean.
If, on the contrary, the temperature rises above 60° — or if, at a lower temperature, the mechanisms of regulation function badly — there may present themselves suddenly, first, some nervous disturbances of various nature and then those grave perturbations known by the names of heat-stroke and sunstroke, which at times are followed by immediate death. [Sic: the Spanish prints subo, for sube.] Heat-stroke is caused by a great increase of atmospheric heat, whether owing to the solar rays or to any other artificial source of heat; while sunstroke, or insolation, is caused by the direct action of the solar rays, specifically upon the head.
Hiller, who has much studied the causal factors of heat-stroke, affirms that, for it to be produced, there is needed: 1) A prolonged stay in regions where the air is overheated. 2) A limited muscular labour, which paralyses the mechanisms of self-regulation of temperature.
3) An excess of muscular labour in a temperate ambience, in which case there is produced a disturbance in the equilibrium of the internal temperature, and paralysis or paresis of the heart and of the respiratory muscles, besides grave disturbances in the composition of the blood and of the metabolism.
Hiller thus arrives at the conclusion that there are three forms of heat-stroke: the asphyctic form, the paralytic or dyscrasic, and the psychopathic.
Both in the case of heat-stroke and in that of sunstroke, the temperature of the body increases notably, and may reach as much as 43°. [Sic: the Spanish prints l1egur, for llegar.] The physiological disturbances produced in light cases (40º) are: frequent respiration and pulse, increase in the elimination of sweat, increase of thirst and general fatigue.
In the graver cases the pulse may reach a frequency of 130 to 140 pulsations per minute, the thirst is unbearable, the sweat is most abundant, and there manifest themselves hemicranias, deliriums, vertigos and, at times, epileptiform cramps — death being able to occur in this state.
If the symptomatology described gradually disappears, there nevertheless remain some persistent symptoms, such as nervous depression or exaltation, hemicrania and visual disturbances.
In the case of insolation, in which the action of the solar rays is exercised directly upon the nervous system— …scant importance. [Editorial gloss: the retype splice closes here; the sentence continues the paragraph transposed to the head of the article.] These lesions consist of chromatolysis of the nerve cells of the central nervous system, destruction of the nerve fibrils of the cells of the cortex and medulla, small haemorrhages in the medulla oblongata, digestive tube, endocardium and liver. ______________ · 22

Estudiaremos hoy las influencias del 12.° signo zodiacal:
PISCIS o Los Peces.

FAZ 1.ª (0.º a 5.°): Estatura media, hombros fuertes, rostro delgado y alargado,
cabellos oscuros, ojos encavados, nariz grande, boca ancha y barbilla estrecha o aguda.

agradable, rostro lleno y ovalado, cejas hermosas y anchas y frente desarrollada.
Inteligencia mediocre.
FAZ 4.º (16.° a 20.°): Estatura mediana, rostro alargado y con pecas, frente ancha
y cejas abundantes, ojos pequeños, oscuros o negros barbilla estrecha.
sonriente y cabellos oscuros.
FAZ 6.ª (26.° a 30.°): Persona pequeña, menuda, débil o delgada.

Por Asuri Kapila, S. I.
principales y 10 secundarios.
Los principales son: CARBONO. AZUFRE, NITRÓGENO, HIDRÓGENO,
OXÍGENO, FOSFORO, CLORO, POTASIO, SODIO, MAGNESIO, CALCIO, HIERRO.
Los secundarios son SILICIO. FLÚOR, BROMO, YODO, ALUMINIO,
MANGANESO, LITIO, COBRE, PLOMO y CINC.
Azufre — Entra en la constitución de las substancias proteicas y de sus derivados;
integral, nabos hervidos, coliflor hervida y brócoli.

aceitunas, castañas, cerezas, tomates, moras, papas, manzanas, lechugas, rabanitos, pepinos,
alcauciles, zanahorias, cebollas, ciruelas, uvas, cerezas, peras, centeno, naranjas.
integral, avena, coco, trigo, cebada, cerezas, nueces, lechuga, espinacas, zanahorias, rabanitos, frutillas, zapallos, manzanas, quesos frescos, huevos, lentejas, naranjas, escarolas, peras, alcauciles, castañas y pepinos.
carencia provoca disturbios mentales, neurastenia, vértigos, nerviosidad, mal humor,
sulfato, oxalato, citrato, etc.
trigo, limones, duraznos, naranjas, ciruelas, espinacas, cebollas, frutillas, y especialmente
lechugas, zanahorias aceitunas y pan integral.
berros, nueces, piñones, trigo integral, avena, granadas, frutillas, manzanas, uvas, cerezas,
duraznos, zanahorias, espinacas, repollo crudo, tomates, arroz integral y cebada.

(crudas), manzanas, arvejas, tomates, ajos, cebollas, alcauciles y hongos.

Por Pitágoras S:: I::

veces, a 40º.

manifiestan hemicráneas, delirios, vértigos y, a veces, calambres epileptiformes,
