"The Grand Council of the Martinist Order, desiring to clarify concepts and define situations, has requested "LA INICIACIÓN" exceptionally to increase the pages of this March 1945 number to 40 pages, in order to transcribe, without prejudice to non-Martinist Readers, the "Introduction", the "Decree of 15 July 1944" and the "General Statutes" which characterise the new working modality of the Martinist Order (formerly denominated "Martinist Order of South America").
As is indicated in the very text of the "Introduction" (of the Book containing the Regulations, Rituals and Programmes of Study of the Order), this new modality is an adaptation to new times and new necessities; and, as was to be foreseen, the new orientation — more "ample" [Sic: the Spanish prints amp1ia, with a numeral] in the spiritual sense and more "exacting" in the sense of work and fulfilment in the administrative sense — has provoked, and will yet provoke, the departure (by passage to inactivity, by desistance, or by elimination) of those Members who do not accept that orientation.
The Grand Council reiterates that, when someone [Sic: the Spanish prints a1guen, with a numeral] is initiated — even if his natal figure (horoscope) indicates optimum POSSIBILITIES (the stars incline but do not compel) — it is always possible that the person concerned may not succeed in profiting wholly, or sufficiently, from those "possibilities", an initiatic failure being ALWAYS POSSIBLE, or at least a desire to work (where it exists) with other modalities.
In either case, the position of the Order is always one: to retain no one in its bosom. Entry is even more difficult than departure. We seek neither quantity of members nor economic growth; we long to join together BROTHERS IN SPIRITUAL LABOUR.
This said, we shall examine what it has been thought suitable to cite: INTRODUCTION. The Martinist Order now presents, in this Castilian edition, the new Internal Regulations, Programmes of Study of the Degrees, and Rituals which are to serve to govern the individual and collective activity of its Members.
If these administrative, cultural and liturgical norms are compared with those contained in the Portuguese edition published by the Order when it was reorganised in Brazil, on 23 December 1939, under the primitive denomination of "Martinist Order of South America", it will be verified that many modifications have been made — some of detail, without fundamental importance; others of real and basic transcendence.
We shall enumerate the principal ones and give the fundamental reasons for their adoption. Denomination of the Martinist Order: The minute study that has been made over the past three years by the V. Brother Pitágoras, in order to write his voluminous and very well documented work on the "History of Martinism", has made it possible to verify and ground on irrefutable documentary references that our Order follows exactly the · 4
p. 5cultural, philosophical and liturgical orientation that had been given it by Martínes de Pasqually, Louis-Claude de Saint Martin and, more recently, by its reorganiser in 1887, the Master PAPUS.
Multiple facts, some of a concrete and visible nature, others of mystical transcendence, have demonstrated to us that the astral current of the Martinist Order, linked to more elevated Fraternities of East and West since Martínes de Pasqually and since Papus, supported our activity in the sense of preparing a number — limited perhaps, but nevertheless very appreciable — of beings for the practical realisation of Initiation, leaving aside all social, polemical, masonic or analogous activity.
That influence has made itself felt in so clear a form, and has linked our activity so intimately to that of traditional Fraternities, some of them millennial, of East and West, that the restrictive and provisional denomination of "Martinist Order of South America" which we had adopted in 1939 no longer has any reason for being; and therefore we return to using the one which, from PAPUS onward, served especially to designate the continuation of the Work of Martines de Pasqually and, more especially still, that of Saint Martin and modern Martinism, reorganised by Papus himself.
We know that, after the death of Papus, there existed in Lyon an organisation with a similar denomination, dissolved not long ago in Europe, and which was represented on that Continent from those same epochs. We know also that that organisation has with ours some very accentuated differences, as has been made known to us by correspondence from its European directors many years ago, and from local ones more recently.
That organisation: 1º) Accepts as members only persons who are previously Master Masons. 2º) Does not confer formal and regular initiation upon women. 3º) Does not accept the occultist part of study, such as astrology, etc., considering for that very reason the organisation formerly given by Papus as amorphous.
4º) Manifests an evident distancing from everything that is teaching of the East. Our Order, on the other hand, declares that: 1º) It does not care to know whether its members have been masons or not, for it has, and wishes to have, nothing to do with the various existing masonic rites. 2º) It confers initiation equally on men and women.
3º) It is fundamentally esoterist, admitting all means of investigation, from the most academic and scientific to the most "Occultist" and mystical. 4º) It accepts as equivalent truths all those that may be, and ARE, taught by the Initiatic Fraternities of East and West alike. 5º) It definitively refuses to accept for itself, or to impose on its Members, the slightest restriction or preference in doctrinal, cultural, liturgical or · 5
p. 6mystical matters. It teaches everything that seems to it interesting and good, leaving each Member to apply it as he understands it and as he feels it. Modifications in the protocolary order: All designations of protocolary order have been suppressed, such as "Powerful Brother", etc.…, which had a distinctly masonic sonority, or might seem to.
To avoid confusions, and also to bring our Members back to reality, we have kept exclusively the title of "Venerable" — a word used by all the fraternities of the World, including the various clergies — conceived as the symbol of an "ideal to realise" and not as the expression of something granted by diploma or by the fact of enrolling in the Order.
Let those who should come to be "powerful" be so in the active silence of the practice of their virtues, and not by parading vain denominations. Modifications in the hierarchic order: Tending toward an ever greater simplification, certain offices have been suppressed, such as those of the various inspectors, and other functions simplified, such as those of the Delegate, which are now of a single kind.
There are no more "special", "sovereign" or "general" delegates, and there are likewise no more regional councils. There is only the Grand Council of the Order, the Corporations and the Free Members: active or inactive, and honorary. There is no more Sovereign Delegate General.
There exists the Grand Council with its collective functions and its indispensable individual offices. Modifications concerning Corporations: There are no more "lodges" — a term that sounds too much of masonic assemblies, in which time is lost discussing theories that hardly ever attain what interests us: the individual effort of self-surpassing.
Now the Martinist Centres are true Temples in which one studies, practises what has been studied, and where one goes to meditate and to pray: for the good of our fellow beings. The formation of Study Groups has been definitively officialised, for the simple reason that a Centre demands special conditions for functioning, not always easy to assemble rapidly and at times impossible to obtain for a long time.
The Study Groups permit that, even in reduced numbers and in the simplest conditions, Martinists may learn collective service and have the pleasure of the spiritual life in common. Modifications of the cultural order: The programmes of the degrees have been altered, conserving, of those existing in the times of Papus, what it was indispensable and necessary to maintain.
They have been amplified in two directions: first, in that of adding many points of practical realisation and reducing theory; secondly, in that of giving to certain Eastern teachings the place they deserved.
Modifications in the granting of degrees: There existed, and will always exist in the Order, a certain number of Members who, having no special aptitudes for intellectual culture, could hardly obtain the degrees which, formerly, were granted exclusively by detailed examination on the programme of the degrees.
p. 7preceding degrees assures the selection of the Fil…Desc… who possess the due preparation and aptitudes for their important functions. Modifications in the identification of Martinists: The symbols have been restored to their true purpose: that of teachings and liturgical practices.
For recognition as Members of the Order, Martinists will now use an Identity Card, certifying their quality as Active Members — since a cultural and spiritual society that is not secret, like Martinism, has no reason to imitate those who identify themselves with special words, handshakes, etc. That Martinists should make themselves known to one another by their identity card, administratively speaking, and by their constructive, cordial, altruistic acts in society, is what the Order desires.
Modifications in the tributary order: The economic organisation has been enormously amplified. Each Active Member pays — directly if he is a Free Member, or through the Corporation to which he belongs — an annual tribute to the Grand Council, for the renewal of his Activity card.
The Corporations thus have the right to collect, or not, entry fees and monthly dues, or to collect none at all if their directing Members wish and are able to cover the necessary expenses. Autonomy is thus greatly amplified, the formalities of calculations and remittances of money each quarter, as existed before, having been suppressed.
Moreover, the requirement of annual payment for the Activity Card has been laid down in consideration of the experience acquired in these last years, which has shown that there are no members who cannot acquire it, for almost all, with or without sacrifices, can pay for it when they have a real interest in realisation and affection for the Order.
Those rare cases in which brothers of worth should be materially unable to make that payment will always be easily resolved, by their own brothers of the Corporation or by timely decisions of the Grand Council. But the fundamental fact is that the economic order will gain much, in this way, in the simplicity of its organisation.
Martinists who travel will also have, by means of the Identity Card, the possibility of easily certifying their quality as active Members of the Order before other Brothers of other places, and in unequivocal form — contrary to what might happen when recognition is purely of a symbolic or conventional order. Conclusions.
In sum, one easily reaches the conclusion, from the reading and meditation of these new regulations, programmes and rituals, that our Order — even while greatly facilitating entry to the first degree — puts in force a modality which, being the continuation of the previous form of work and study, lets one perceive an ever more accentuated tendency in a direction that could be synthesised in this phrase: "Something must be done; speak less and realise more: the means are these".
Effectively, nothing else could be expected of an Order like ours which, having no pretension of becoming numerically or economically "notable" like a sporting or social club, tends exclusively to the real preparation of Initiates — who, if they truly do all that the Order helps them to realise, will find with absolute certainty, and within the Order itself, new doors giving them access to the most elevated realisations.
p. 8If physical love exercised in natural form is fecund and produces the children of the body; if sentimental love notably felt is fecund and affords joy and dedication, which are children of the soul — impersonal love, which is the synthesis of the initiatic way, cannot be sterile and manifest itself merely in discourses, exchanges of opinion and eternal literary-theoretical commentaries. It must bear fruit.
And that fructification can come only from the individual tree itself. Let us cultivate ourselves. Let us be the gardener, the garden and the tree.
Let us prepare ourselves to bear fruit and really have something to give. It is possible that the greater clarity of this orientation may remove from our ranks some members who wished to remain "seated" in the comfort of the passivity of one who receives information and who, when he does not forget it, keeps it merely as a static asset, like "one more piece of furniture in the already overloaded memory".
We hope it may be possible to stimulate in the totality of Martinists an interest in practical realisation; and, if any should not wish to do so, preferring to instal himself in other sectors of the theoretical divulgation of the initiatic teachings, the full liberty that Martinism has always left to its Members will permit him to do so.
What is evident is that, in a place of work, where each one exercises an activity harmonious with the common purpose, the still inactive element has, in the long run, only two solutions: either to set himself also to work, or to feel uncomfortable in the midst of people who have too much to do to devote time to useless chatter.
Those who know something more of the Order's possibilities, who have read the forecasts of its activity in the years to come published in "La Iniciación", and who meditate on what it has accomplished in the four and a half years already passed since its reorganisation in 1939, will realise that it is not with "discourses" that all this has been done, but with work, sacrifices and activity.
A good part of all these constructive factors is due to many Brothers who are not part of the Grand Council and have devoted themselves with disinterested zeal to work "upon" themselves and "for" the rest.
The Grand Council desires that the last words of this Introduction, to the book that marks the new working modality, should be to thank, with all affection and fraternal friendship, all the Martinists who, in whatever place, function or degree, have done something for their own preparation and for the Service of the Venerable Masters of our Order and of each and every concomitant initiatic Current.
May the Serene Peace and the Love of one's Fellows that reigns in the heart of all the Gurus and Masters reign also in that of all. AUM et AMEN. Jehel, P. G. C.

p. 12Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism — Historical-chronological notes on the Martinist Order. by Pitágoras, S.I. (Continuation) WILLERMOSISM. 1730—10 July—Jean-Baptiste Willermoz is born at Lyon, eldest of the thirteen children of Claude-Cheterin Willermoz. 1742—J.
B. Willermoz, to help his father in the haberdashery trade, leaves the College of the Trinity, where he had followed his primary studies. 1745—15 February—J.
B. Willermoz works as an apprentice in the silk-weaving establishment of Antonio Bagnion. 1747—J.
B. enters as an employee the silk business of Liotard, Manéchalle et Cie., where he remains almost two years. 1750—Initiation of J. B.
Willermoz in an unidentified masonic lodge of Lyon. 1752—Willermoz's progress in the masonic initiation was so great and rapid that, when the Venerable of the lodge had to leave Lyon, he was named in his substitution at barely 22 years of age. [Sic: the printed title reads WILLERMOS1SMO, with a numeral.] 1753—In this year J. B.
Willermoz founds, with eight more friends, the masonic lodge Parfaite Amitié, becoming its Venerable. The progress of this lodge was such that on 21 November 1756 the Grand Lodge of France recognised it. Its members, who were 29 in 1760, reached 50 in 1763.
1754—In this year we find J. B. Willermoz installed as a silk manufacturer in "l'allée qui traverse la rue de l'Arbre Sec en rue Bas d'Argent", where he remained until 1771, the year in which he moves the business to the Rue Lafond.
1756—Death of his mother. 1759—Initiation in the Parfaite Union of Dr. Pierre Jacques Willermoz, brother of Jean-Baptiste. 1 1759—4 May—With the authorisation of the Grand Lodge of France, J.
B. Willermoz, Venerable of the Parfaite Amitié, founds, with Juan Paganucci, Venerable of the lodge Vrais Amis, and Jacques Grandon, Venerable of the lodge Amitié, a kind of local masonic Grand Orient denominated Grand Mother Lodge of the Regular Masters. [Sic: a stray numeral one precedes the second entry for the year.] In · 12
p. 13the years 1762 and 1763 Willermoz was the Grand Master of that Grand Lodge, and in the following years its archivist. Its members were 6 in 1760 and 49 in 1765. From 1763 to 1767 the lodges of Lyon adhered to this Grand Lodge: Sagesse, Amis Choisis, the Military Lodge of Saint Jean de la Gloire, Parfait Silence and Parfaite Réunion.
1761—Exchange of correspondence between the Grand Mother Lodge of Lyon and the lodge La Vertu of Metz, and especially between J.B. Willermoz and the former Venerable of that lodge: Meunier de Précourt. 1763—Initiation in the Grand Mother Lodge of Antonio Willermoz, brother of Jean-Baptiste.
10 December—J. B. Willermoz founds another masonic organisation of Rosicrucian character: Chevaliers de l'Aigle Noir Rose Croix, whose purpose is the study of the secrets of astrological, kabbalistic and alchemical masonry.
The Grand Master was Dr. Pierre Jackes Willermoz, resident for the greater part of the year at Montpellier, where he pursues his studies in chemistry. Among the members of this organisation we mention Bacon de la Chevalerie, Sellonf, the abbé Rozier, Belz, Paganucci, Monge, etc. — all of whom will later become Elect Cohens. 1767—April—After 17 years of continuous activities and searchings in Masonry, J.
B. is initiated at Versailles by Martines de Pasqually into the Order of the Elect Cohens. June—J. B. returns to Lyon with the degree of Commander of East and West and with the functions of Inspector General of the Order of the Elect Cohens, and founds in that city a Cohen Chapter.
1768—11,12 and 13 May—Elevation of J. B. in Paris, by Bacon de la Chevalerie, to the degree of Apprentice R. C., without the agreement of Martines de Pasqually, who judged it premature.
During that ceremony very lamentable irregularities were committed, according to Martines. [Editorial gloss: the Spanish reads "by Martines", where the chapter's sense wants his judgment, not his hand.] June—Willermoz begins to practise the ritual-magical ceremonies taught by Martines de Pasqually — practices he will continue in the following years without obtaining successes.
1769—Claudine Thérèse Willermoz, sister of Jean-Baptiste, married to Mr. Provensal, loses her husband in this year, remaining alone with her son Juan. 1770—J. B.
Willermoz goes to Holland on commercial business. Summer—Claude-Chaterin Willermoz, father of J. B., dies after several years of illness.
1771—15 to 30 April—J. B. Willermoz meets Martines de Pasqually in Paris.
May—Returned to Lyon, he initiates into the Order of the Elect Cohens his brother, Dr. Pierre Jacques, and the abbé Rozier. (To be continued). · 13
p. 14Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ We shall now study the influences of the 10th Sign of the Zodiac: CAPER, or CAPRICORN. Says J.
J. Bugoyne, the illumined Rosicrucian, author of "The Light of Egypt": Capricorn, under its symbolic aspect, designates sin. [Sic: printed Bugoyne, for Burgoyne.] The scapegoat of the Israelites, and the universal offering of a kid as an expiatory sacrifice for sin, are significant. Saint John in his mystical Apocalypse employs, from the symbolic point of view, the different qualities of the lamb and the kid.
The Redeemer of Humanity, or Sun-God, is always born at midnight, at the instant the Sun enters Capricorn, at the winter solstice.
"The young child" is born in the manger and sleeps in the bed of the kid, that he may conquer the last signs of winter and of death, thus saving humanity from destruction. [Sic: the Spanish prints salando, for salvando.] Kabbalistically, the sign of Capricorn represents the knees of the Macrocosm and, thus, the first principle in the trinity of locomotion: the flexible joints, mobile and capable of bending.
It is the emblem of material servitude, and must be so considered. On the esoteric planisphere, Capricorn is occupied by Naphtali, of whom Jacob says: "He is a hind let loose and gives goodly words".
We have, in that phrase, two distinct suggestions: the hind, or fawn, or a kid with its horns — since those animals designate the terrestrial, mountainous nature, by their predilection for steep places; and then, in the proclamation of the Nativity, "he gives goodly words": "Peace on earth, goodwill toward man". This sign represents regeneration, or rebirth, and reveals the necessity of "new laws".
The corresponding mystic gem is the onyx, also called chalcedony. Capricorn is the densest emanation of the trigon of Earth, being the constellation of Saturn. On the intellectual plane, Capricorn designates external form, and those born under its influence remain on the initial steps of true spirituality.
The "Brain" placed under such an influence is always alert to seize the opportunity and profit by circumstances. This sign rules, then, spirits who make projects: the intellectual nature directs itself toward the pursuit of personal ends; the spirit's power of penetration is great. Those born in Capricorn have great quickness in discerning the weak points that others present, and those that can be used to their own advantage.
They rarely show themselves disposed to execute truly laborious work, unless they perceive an almost immediate profit. It is, in general, a not very desirable influence. On the physical plane, Capricorn generally bestows a medium or tall stature; a thin and ill-proportioned physique.
They are persons of clear vision, and energetic where their own interests are concerned, but indolent when it is a question of the interests of others. Many of them have a pointed chin and a thin nose, with small eyes of piercing gaze. · 14
p. 15An artful character, subtle, reserved and melancholy. They are frequently miserly. Among plants, Capricorn rules: hemlock, henbane, belladonna and the black poppy.
Among stones: Carbuncle, and all black or ash-coloured minerals. THE DECANATES OF CAPRICORN ON THE ASCENDANT (according to Julevno). Capricorn bestows, in a general way: a medium, rather small stature, thin, nervous, ill-proportioned.
A long neck, pointed chin, sparse beard, little-developed chest, black hair, abundant and coarse. The nose is usually long and curved, and the ears without lobes. A subtle character, malign, ingenious, envious, melancholy, egoistic, capricious and independent.
It must not be forgotten that very good aspects modify such indications; but something of the characteristics of the sign will always be noted in the person's conduct — and this is so for all signs situated on the Ascendant. Capricorn rules the knees and calves, being the domicile of Saturn.
The first decanate (first 10 degrees) is under the influence of Jupiter, and indicates a fatalist spirit, anxious about its fortune, austere and religious, with good qualities but ambitious. It also indicates a life of struggles, over which some mysterious event projects permanent shadow and sorrow.
The second decanate (degrees 11 to 20) is influenced by Mars, and gives a tenacious and ambitious character, very rash, too exalted in action, capable of becoming despotic and cruel. This decanate characterises the warrior and adventurer, who comes to acquire fame and position through audacity, with a lack of scruples.
The third decanate (degrees 21 to 30) is under the influence of the Sun, giving a cold character, proud, reserved, not very sympathetic, with a dissembled melancholy. It prognosticates a difficult life, without friends or joys, with financial difficulties, sorrows caused by wife and children, and danger of premature death.
THE FACES OF CAPRICORN (divisions of 5 degrees), according to classical opinions gathered by Dr. Salmón, indicate: lst FACE — (0 to 5 degrees) [Sic: the ordinal is printed with a letter ell]. Tall stature, thin face, agreeable aspect. Dark hair, small mouth, a swarthy face with spots or freckles.
2nd FACE — (6 to 10 degrees). Small stature, an elongated but agreeable face, complexion and hair dark, a type similar to the preceding. Here there are influences of the Sun and Mars, which develop vanity and a high opinion of oneself.
3rd FACE — (11 to 15 degrees). The same type as the preceding, but with a more developed physique and a majestic aspect that inspires respect and even fear. 4th FACE — (16 to 20 degrees).
A corpulent person, round face, light complexion, a mouth with thick lips, chestnut hair. If Saturn is in the face, it will make him darker and thinner, with a suspicious character. · 15
p. 165th FACE — (21 to 25 degrees). A tall person, strong, well proportioned and agreeable. 6th FACE — (26 to 30 degrees).
Medium stature; fine features, with a certain beauty. Light complexion, light hair. Uranus has influence over this face and bestows a taste for the sciences, letters and study in general. [Sic: the Spanish prints luz, for faz.] INFLUENCES OF THE FACES OF CAPRICORN ON THE ASCENDANT (according to old authors).
1st face: Great intelligence, strong imagination; sincere, modest, upright and obliging. 2nd face: Valiant, generous, honest in his proceedings, but very changeable and a lover of the company of vulgar women. 3rd face: Ample vision, a lover of honours and fame, with eloquence and an agile spirit, who seeks the friendship of women of elevated quality, but who acts with vanity and ostentation.
4th face: An affable and courteous person, without malice or rancour. 5th face: A jovial character, amiable, generous, but authoritarian. 6th face: An effeminate, libertine person, occupied with his clothes, adornments, games, music, song — all by way of pastime, without real worth.
THE FACES OF CAPRICORN ON THE MIDHEAVEN: First face: Prognosticates honours and elevation toward the end of life, but is not very favourable for public functions. Second face: Indicates success in administrative or public functions, or near influential persons, in letters or sciences, and even in the army. Third face: Success and elevation of position.
Fourth face: If Jupiter were here, it would indicate a function in the magistracy, in the Church or in Initiatic Fraternities; and, there being good aspects of the Sun, that function will be of importance. If there are aspects with Saturn, Mars or Venus, there may be misfortunes or discredit. If the aspects, or the presence, are of Uranus, there will be instability.
Fifth face: Personal dignity, a certain haughtiness, but little success and little fame. Sixth face: Success through women, and the formation of beautiful projects for the future, which will hardly come to be realised. · 16

BADDHA PADMASANA. — This asana (which is a variant of the Padmasana published in No. 3 of La Iniciación) is practised as follows: 1) Sit in Padmasana, endeavouring to bring the heels up to the inguinal regions. 2) Carry the right arm behind the back and grasp with the tips of the fingers of the right hand the big toe of the right foot.
3) Then carry the left arm behind the back and grasp with the fingers of the left hand the big toe of the left foot. 4) While executing these two movements of the arms, incline the head until the chin rests on the chest, and direct the gaze toward the tip of the nose. 5) After remaining some seconds in this position, return to the Padmasana.
6) Inhale slowly and deeply, counting mentally up to 7; retain the breath, counting mentally up to 7; and exhale, likewise slowly and deeply, counting mentally up to 7. 7) During the exhalation pronounce the sacred monosyllable OM.
The perfect execution of this asana is very difficult for beginners, and that is why we recommend that during the first month they perform the "half posture" — that is, grasp only the big toe of the right foot with the fingers of the right hand. During the second month the exercise may be repeated, but grasping the big toe of the left foot with the fingers of the left hand.
To facilitate these movements it is advisable to flex the back somewhat forward. Only after executing the "half posture" well may this asana be executed in complete form. BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THE BADDHA PADMASANA.
The benefits derived from the continued practice of this asana are the following: 1) Cure of various chronic diseases of the digestive system, such as gastritis, dyspepsias, hyperacidity, gastrectasia, gastroptosis, intestinal fermentation and putrefaction, colitis, constipation, etc. 2) Return to normal functioning of the endo-abdominal organs (liver, spleen, pancreas).
3) Elimination of the causes that obstruct the normal functioning of the kidneys. 4) Gradual disappearance of auto-intoxication and disappearance of all those pathological manifestations that depend on it. 5) Toning of the muscles of the arms, back, thorax, abdomen and legs.
6) Better blood-irrigation of the whole body and increase of the elasticity of the vessels. 7) Gradual disappearance of lumbago. 8) Extraordinary toning of the solar plexus and increase of the circulation of prana through its innumerable nervous branches. 9) Gradual toning of the whole central and peripheral nervous system. · 17
p. 18Until we are in a condition to practise the Baddha Padmasana in perfect form, and to remain in this posture for a time varying from 40 minutes to an hour, we shall not be able to appreciate its beneficent effects in sensible form. p. 19Sacred Dates of Buddhism. January 1st — Day of adoration of Maitreya Buddha, the next Buddha, whose coming was prophesied by Gotama the Buddha.
On this day one must fast from 12 of the previous night until 12 of the night of the day l.º [Sic: the ordinal is printed with a letter ell], meditate from 8 to 9 in the morning, from 3 to 4 in the afternoon and from 8 to 9 at night (Uruguayan time), and invoke the Sublime Mahaprajnaparamita on linking oneself with the Sacred Current of the Maha Boddhi Sangha.
January 16 — A sacred day and one of adoration, being the day on which the Master of the World, Bhagavan Mitra Deva, saw the light of day (Full Moon of Pushya — 16 January 1916). Complete fasting during the whole day, and meditations in the respective Ashrams of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam, during which the great mantram of invocation to Mitra Deva will be pronounced. February 15 — Day of the Nirvana.
The date on which Gotama the Buddha enters the Nirvana. Complete fasting from 12 of the previous day until 12 of the night of the 15th, and meditations from 8 to 9 in the morning, from 3 to 4 in the afternoon and from 8 to 9 at night. February 19 — Adoration of Avalokiteswara, or Kwan-Yin.

April — May — Festival of Wesak, celebrated by the Buddhists of the world.
In this spring season is commemorated the triple anniversary of the birth, the illumination and the disincarnation of the Lord Buddha, its great date culminating at the first full moon of May. The Japanese Buddhists celebrate this memorable date on 8 April. Fast for three days, and during them perform meditations or devote oneself intensely to the service of those who suffer physically, morally and mentally.
May 8 — Day of the White Lotus.
This day, on which all India celebrates its greatest festivity, is also the day on which, in 1891, the eminent Teacher Elena Petrowna Blavasky disincarnated. [Sic: printed Blavasky, for Blavatsky.] All true Buddhists know of the close bond that existed between · 19 Whoever remembers with deep devotion the sacred dates and the anniversaries of those great Gurus who with their Love and Wisdom taught us the Perfect Science, will feel his heart invaded by a wave of Love.
Whoever carries his Spirit toward the holy places where the Sacred Tradition was born will feel it invaded by a wave of serene Peace.

Fasting and meditations. July — October — The season of the rains, called Wasa, which lasts from 3 to 4 months, beginning sometimes with the first full moon of June and ending with the full moon of October.
All the Buddhist monks withdraw, during these months, to their ashrams, to give themselves to meditation, project thoughts of peace and love toward all humanity, and preach the Good Doctrine. In Siam, during this season, a "sutra" called "the Great Birth" is recited.
At the season's end a ceremony called "the gift of the garments" is performed, during which the faithful present the Buddhist priests with new garments that are to serve them for the whole year, and offer food. October 11 — Anniversary of the disincarnation of Bodhidharma, founder of the Dhyana School of Zen Buddhism. Fasting and meditations.
November 11 — Commemoration of Amida, or Amitabha Buddha. Fasting and meditations. December 8 — The day on which the Lord Buddha reaches the summit of knowledge and the realisation of the highest virtues.
In Tibet other festivals are also celebrated, during which the founders of the great Monasteries are commemorated. In Lhasa, for example, as at Kounboum, there is celebrated, on the fifteenth day of the first full moon, a great feast called the "Feast of the flowers", during which the great reformer Tson-Kha-Pa is commemorated.
Certain Buddhists fast during four days of the month, called Uposatho, which correspond to the beginning of the four lunar phases. During these days they visit the Temples and the Ashrams to hear the preaching of the Dharma. May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the four Cardinal Points of the Universe, of the Past, Present and Future, bless all beings.
May the Light of Mahaprajnaparamita shine in all hearts. Om Mani Padme Hum. p. 21Suddha Dharma Mandalam. The Avatara of BHAGAVAN MITRA DEVA, Instructor of the World, by the Guru Subrahananiananda. II.
THE AVATARA.
It is worth mentioning that during the festivities already referred to, of the Full Moon of Vaisakh, celebrated in Visala Badari before the presence of thirty-two Great Siddhas, of the Sapta Rishis, or Lords of the Seven Rays, and of other mahatmas — when the question was raised as to the matter, or the subtle elements, required for the formation of the internal vestures around which was to develop the physical body to be occupied and used by the Avatara — Rinkhana offered to supply it by delivering his own vesture of Daivi Prakriti, created by the power of his meditations, and this offer was accepted.
In pursuance of which, a portion of the Daivi Prakriti of the Great Siddha united itself, in due time, with the foetus in gestation in the womb of a holy woman, wife of a gentleman of Maharastra endowed with noble qualities and belonging to the caste of the Kshatriyas, who resided in one of the villages of the country of Maharastra; and it came to be the vehicle of the fragment, or "amsa", of the Lord. — This formation in the mother's womb had its own peculiar, admirable and pure development, in a manner different from that of common children.
From so pure a body, born to be the Master of the World, Bhagavan Mitra Deva saw the light of day at the Full Moon of Pushya of the year Kalayukti (16 January 1919). III. CHANGE OF RESIDENCE AND CELEBRATION OF HIS BIRTH.
At the Full Moon of Vaisakh (14 May 1919) the Divine Infant, in company with his mother (whose husband meanwhile had died), was conveyed, under the solicitous vigilance of the great Beings, to Srivana, or the Bilva Wood, one of the five woods in the proximity of the Maha Guha (Great Grotto), the other four being known as Samak Vana, Amra Vana, Maha Vana or Brahma Vana, and Bákula Vana.
That same day the ceremonies of Karna Vedhana (piercing of the ears) and of Annaprasana (feeding ritual) were performed on the Child, and he was rocked to sleep in a hammock swinging between two enormous trees. The Avatara continued · 21
p. 22dwelling and developing in this abode, being nourished and suckled by the Nature Spirits of the order known as Gamalakas, and later fed by the birds of Nara.
By reason of the Celebration of the Lord's Birth by the Great Siddhas, the Lords of the Seven Rays and the Mahatmas, the ceremony of the Full Moon of Vaisakh of that year was postponed by a month, and both ceremonies were celebrated together by the Mandala at the following Full Moon (13 June 1919). IV. THE ENTRY INTO THE MAHA GUHA, AND THE FIRST AND SECOND DISCOURSE, AND THE VASUDEVA DIKSHA.
The following year, at the Full Moon of Vaisakh (4 May 1920), Bhagavan Mitra Deva was taken from his mother's care, and ten great Mahatmas took him by turns until he was introduced into the Maha Guha, each singing in his turn the following Mangala Sloka (verse of blessing): (1) Blessing to Mitra Deva, son of Ganga Devi, endowed with Mahatmic Prakriti; for ever blessing to You, incarnated to propagate the Suddha Dharma; (2) Blessing to You, revealed in the second year of the five-hundred-and-first cycle of the Suddha Era in this Kaliyuga; (3) Blessing to You, auspicious and divinely incarnated to protect all, now that the world grows irreligious and the appropriate Dharmas are waning; (4) Blessing to You, of divine resplendence, who are the personification of the Dharma, manifested as an amsa (fragment) of the Lord Náráyana and incarnated for the welfare of humanity; (5) Blessing to You, worthy of all reverence, who have appeared here with the vesture of Daivi Prakriti, formed during ages by the prolonged austerities of the Mahatma Rinkhana; (6) Blessing to You, cared for by Sri Yoga Devi to instruct the race in the truths and practice of the Ancient Dharma and in the Synthetic Science of the Absolute; (7) Blessing to You, Fulfiller of the just aspiration of all suppliants; to You, Brahmadeva, supreme and universal Creator, who inspire with the powers of Your Suddha, or transcendent, meditation; (8) Blessing to You, glorified by holy men endowed with Yogic excellence, Executor of universal action; to You, ever filled with transcendent blessing, Beloved of all and Master of the Suddha Dharma; (9) Beatitude to You, ever occupied in transcendental truth — He of absolute ideation, of universal action and of transcendental Yoga; to You, who dwell in truth and receive the adoration of true devotees; (10) And Blessing to You, Great Master, who in this Kaliyuga have become incarnate to bestow on all the nectar of the pure and ancient Yoga, worthy to be shared by all peoples. · 22
p. 23In the Maha Guha, or the Great Grotto, the Avatara received the Great Initiation known as the Vasudeva Diksha. The initiation was imparted by Bhagavan Vasudeva without any of the mantric rites usual in common cases. The object of the Initiation was to remove the impurities caused by gestation in the womb.
After this Initiation, while the Avatara remained in the Maha Guha, at the request of Rinkana, on 22 October of the same year He pronounced his First Discourse, in which he treated of the Suddha Dharma in general, before the presence of nearly a hundred Mahatmas, and of Kaladeva, Subramanya and Devapi — the fifth, the sixth and the seventh of the seven Lords of the Seven Rays.
Afterwards he spoke, on 23 January 1921, on the Future Work of the Hierarchs. And this was his second Discourse. (To be continued) PEACE TO THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. HEALTH TO ALL THE MAHATMAS, SIDDHAS AND GURUS.
OM. By copy: Jehel, 13-2-945. i SAPTARISHIS. These were: Narada, Vasadeva, Kasyapa, Chandabhanukha, Kaladeva, Subrahmanya and Devapi, being respectively the Lords of Satya, Tapas, Jana, Maha, Svah, Bhuvah and Bhur Lokas. ii DAIVI PRAKRITTI.
All manifested existences, including those of the governors within them, are regulated by Brahma Sakti, of whom one speaks also under the name of Atma Sakti, and also under that of maya. According to the Masters of the Buddha's school of thought, the term Maya is used in relation to the Sakti of Brahma, and can never be identified with the meaning of illusion or non-reality.
This power of Brahma appears in three forms and is known respectively as Daivi Maya, Esha Maya and Gunamayi Maya. The first refers to the Paramatman, and is the aspect under which its work in the cosmos is effected. It is in this same aspect of Sakti that the Mahatmas who have attained liberation dwell and render adoration to the Supreme Cause of all.
The second is the Instrument that serves especially the great purpose of the Hierarchs and other more elevated Beings who manifest themselves as Avatara Purushas for the re-establishment of the Dharma. The third concerns the whole human evolution now in march. In order that the Sakti (energy) may execute its function, there must exist the Prakriti, or Matter.
This, in its turn, is divided into three classes, known as: Daivi Prakriti, Kalyani Prakriti and Sarupa Prakriti; and in them function, in order, the Daivi Maya, the Esha Maya and the Gunamayi Maya. [Sic: the Spanish prints Daivi Haya at the first term.] The individual egos, evolving in the various spheres, reside in the Sarupa Prakriti and are enveloped by Gunamayi Maya.
They function in the Samsara during the necessary time, and generally do not have the faculty of exercising their own free will. The great Beings who incarnate according to the necessities of the times, and who in a certain manner come to be channels for the diffusion of the Brahmic power, generally dwell in the Kalyani Prakriti and function in Esha Maya.
They can, by virtue of their own free will, regulate the beginning and the completion of their missions, which may last for a moment, as in the case of Narasimhavatar, or for ages. Paramatma and the Lords of the worlds are all embodied in the Daivi Prakriti and function in Daivi Maya. These have the capacity to set in motion, at will, the conditions for the very fulfilment of their mission.
p. 24Them was Sarupa Prakriti, They subjected themselves to the limitations of that form of matter. Appearing, as they did appear, in the condition [Sic: the Spanish prints condici6n, with a numeral] of common men, They moulded themselves to that state of being. However, Bhagavan Mitra Deva, having incarnated in the most elevated form of matter and functioning in the best of the aspects of Atma Sakti, is beyond those limitations.
Although he encloses a smaller amsa, or ray, of the Lord, Mitra Deva is capable of a greater end, because of the Prakriti, or body, in which he has his being; and it is very natural that it should be so, because while the mission of the other great Avataras was for one race, the object of the present Advent is the welfare and elevation of the whole world, which is composed of many races. iii GAMALAKAS: the book Adiveda, or the ancient one, uses this term to refer to the Siddha Kanhikas. [Sic: printed Mira Deva at the second mention.] _____________ Cosmic Influences and Reactions of Living Beings.
Meteorological influences. By Pitágoras S∴I∴ Without occupying ourselves with the complex genesis of the meteoric influences, these — in their manifestations of barometric pressure, hygrometric state of the air and of the soil, and climate — exercise, as has been established from the remotest antiquity and is observed daily, the most different influences upon living beings.
Barometric pressure. —Every living being must live in an ambience in which an adequate barometric pressure exists, and every variation of that pressure must consequently have repercussions on physiological and psychological life. Thus, living in elevated regions, where the barometric pressure is lower than at sea level, can produce phenomena at times transitory and fleeting, at other times grave.
Mountain sickness belongs to this class of phenomena. In mountain sickness, in effect, we find diminution of muscular force, difficult and irregular respiration, a sensation of oppression in the thorax, cardiac palpitations and strong beating of the arteries, faintings, haemorrhages of the gums, lips, nose and lungs; somnolence and diminution of the psychic faculties.
It was once believed that these disturbances were related to the fatigue produced by the ascent; but later observations made on aviators (who present a symptomatology identical to mountain sickness), and even experiments performed in the pneumatic chamber, in which pressures corresponding to altitudes of 10,000 and even 15,000 metres can be produced, have made it possible to establish that they depend on a modification of the gases of the blood — more exactly, on a diminution of oxygen (anoxaemia) and of carbonic anhydride (acapnia).
These modifications of the gases produced in their turn respiratory modifications (mechanical and chemical) and circulatory ones (cardiac function, blood pressure, state of the vessels) which explained the symptomatology. In effect, for the nervous centres to function normally, the quantity of the gases must always be found at a · 24
p. 25constant level. Now, as this quantity depends on the barometric pressure, when the latter varies, so does the former; when the barometric pressure diminishes, the content of gases in the blood diminishes, and the nervous centres feel this diminution, beginning to manifest different actions to re-establish the disturbed equilibrium.
Owing to the researches of Bert, Muntz, Viault, etc., a greater quantity of iron has been found in the blood of persons who live on very high mountains.
Carlos Poa also found an increase of the red globules almost an hour after having arrived at 3,000 metres of altitude, but attributed this hyperglobulia to an irregular distribution of the corpuscles, in the sense that they accumulate more in the capillaries of the body's surface than in the blood of the thick arteries and veins.
But if this hyperglobulia is apparent — being due not to a true increase but to a variation in the distribution of the corpuscles — when it manifests itself after arrival at that altitude, it becomes true in the case of a prolonged stay in the high mountains; for, from 8 to 10 days later, the haematopoietic tissue, and especially that of the bone marrow, enters into an effective hyperactivity.
Naturally, as the number of corpuscles increases, their haemoglobin content also increases; and this is due, very probably, to a compensating activity of the organism, for as the gaseous interchange increases, the material substrate of this interchange — that is, the haemoglobin — must increase. Naturally, everything returns to the primitive conditions with the return to the plain.
The increase in the activity of the haematopoietic organs, as well as a greater activity of all the organic tissues, has also been established by Jacquet and Stahelín, who have studied the variations of metabolism in man living for prolonged periods in the high mountains. Galeotti has found in animals and in man a notable diminution of the alkalinity of the blood at more than 4,000 metres of altitude.
Schröfter has found, in organisms subjected to a strong and lasting diminution of pressure, various chronic alterations in the tissues — among them the fatty degeneration of the striated muscles and internal organs such as heart, liver and kidneys. Not only the diminution of barometric pressure, but also its increase, produces various physiological modifications; but these are of lesser gravity.
It is known, in effect, how divers, obliged to live for some hours in their diving-suits, in which the pressure is from 3 to 4 atmospheres, manifest a slower and deeper respiration. Grave disturbances, however, can be produced (asphyxia, haemorrhages, faintings) if the return to the normal ambience — and, consequently, the change of pressure — is made too rapidly.
Deficiency of oxygen — Everyone knows that oxygen is indispensable to the maintenance of life and that its deficiency can produce illness and death. The deficiency of oxygen produces an excitation of the bulbar respiratory centres which in its turn originates that syndrome known under the name of dyspnoea.
p. 26respiration, with the purpose — easy to understand — of re-establishing the equilibrium lost in the organism through the great lack of oxygen.
The nervous centres of the vagus can also be excited, and all the muscles of the body can suffer cramps and clonic contractions. [Sic: the Spanish prints ca1ambres, with a numeral.] If this syndrome lasts longer, paralysis of the bulbar centres is then produced and, consequently, death by asphyxia or suffocation.
If, through various chronic diseases of the respiratory passages, the pulmonary respiratory function diminishes considerably, then dyspnoea is not produced, and the patient seeks to compensate the insufficiency of oxygen — and consequently the reduction of haematosis — by limiting internal oxygenation through absolute muscular rest.
But with the poverty of oxygen in the blood, and with the metabolic modifications in the tissues, there is produced in these, little by little — and especially in the heart, liver and kidneys — a fatty degeneration; and in the medulla, a diminution of excitability which, in its turn, has repercussions, weakening it, on the mechanism of regularisation of respiration — that same mechanism which depends exactly on the medullary centres.
A true vicious circle is thus established, in which the organism goes on fading little by little until, without manifesting any violent symptom, death supervenes. (To be continued). ____________________________ TO BE, by Dhyâna, A.M. Oh the humility of the drop! Oh the tragedy of the sea!
To wish to be sea, and to be a drop — and not to have its humility. To wish to be much and to be little; to feel a longing to fly, and to feel oneself fastened here, to the roots of evil. A suffering of impotence, with the humility of the drop and the tragedy of the sea. · 26

aunar HERMANOS EN LABOR ESPIRITUAL.

Y esa fructificación, no

juzgaba prematura.

Enseñanzas de Surya. S:: I::
14
p. 85–87FAZ 4.ª — (16 a 20 grados). Persona corpulenta, rostro redondo, tez clara, boca
15
FAZ 5.ª — (21 a 25 grados). Persona alta, fuerte, bien proporcionada y
agradable.
FAZ 6.ª — (26 a 30 grados). Estatura mediana; rasgos finos, con cierta belleza.
Tez clara, cabellos claros.
1ª faz: Gran inteligencia, fuerte imaginación, sincero, modesto, recto y servicial.

(1) Bendición a Mitra Deva, hijo de Gang a Devi, dotado de Mahátmico Prakriti;
por siempre bendición para Vos, encarnado para propagar el Suddha Dharma;
de la Era Suddha en este Kaliyuga;
ahora que el mundo se torna irreligioso y los apropiados Dharmas están menguando;
bienestar de la humanidad;
Mahatma Rinkhana;
verdades y la práctica del Antiguo Dharma y en la Ciencia Sintética del Absoluto;
Suddha o trascendente meditación;
Amado de todos y Maestro del Suddha Dharma;
recibís la adoración de verdaderos devotos;

éste fue su segundo Discurso.

i SAPTARISHIS. Estos eran: Narada, Vasadeva, Kasyapa, Chandabhanukha, Kaladeva, Subrahmanya y
Devapi, siendo respectivamente los Señores de Satya, Tapas, Jana, Maha, Svah, Bhuvah y Bhur Lokas.
ii DAIVI PRAKRITTI.

rayo del Señor, Mira Deva es capaz de una finalidad mayor, a causa del Prakriti o cuerpo en que tiene su ser;

Por Pitágoras S:: I::
transitorios y fugaces y otras veces graves.
