p. 4The 6th Race or Olympic Race. Lecture delivered by the V∴H∴ LORELAIR, on 13-2-1944, on the occasion of the installation of the portrait of the V∴M∴ CEDAIOR in the Temple of the Tatwa VIVEKANANDA (P. Alegre – Brazil).
Some time ago, when Cedaior was still — physically — our brother and companion of the road, I had begun to make known here a selection of lectures by the Persian philosopher Iranschaehr, whom we both venerate greatly.
The title of the last was: "The necessity of Esotericism in our times". [Sic: the Spanish prints E1, with a numeral.] It spoke of the gravity of the present moment, of the dangers that threaten the new generation if we should not come to give it, in new form, the old doctrines and ancient wisdom, in such a way as to unite science with religion and to satisfy, simultaneously, the reason and the heart.
It pleased me greatly to bring you those lectures, for it was a way of presenting what is our own conviction — and what I consider the mission of Cedaior — availing myself of the words of third parties. Initially, given that the first condition of esoteric spiritualism is tolerance and the understanding of our fellow beings, without which Fraternity, the virtue of future epochs, cannot be realised.
I was going to translate the second part of that work, when I was moved on verifying how it seemed to speak of Cedaior and of his Mission. I could not have read you that lecture without speaking of him, of his ideal which — together — we had embraced; but I feared that in speaking of his personal mission it might be interpreted as proselytism, and… I kept silent.
But when Cedaior left us — on this plane — and now, when each day I see something of what he taught us come true, I believe I may read this part and speak as a disciple, without misgivings. I shall continue, then, from the point where we left the subject: THE GUIDES OF ESOTERICISM. Iranschaehr says: "Gratitude toward God and the Masters is the second obligation in every esoterist school.
Gratitude toward God is shown by Divine Love in all our words, actions and thoughts. Active charity is the best means of proving our gratitude toward God. "Gratitude toward the Masters: we prove it by recognition of their dignity and of their sacrifice, following their words and examples.
"Already, from the beginning of human culture, and until today, there have always existed souls which, in spiritual evolution, had climbed higher than their sisters. Those souls were in advance of their epoch; they already possessed in themselves the seeds of the future states of culture. They knew the laws and the truth which, for the senses of their contemporaries, were still unattainable.
"Their psychic forces were more developed and their spiritual eyes were more open. Their intellect was relatively freer and more endowed with Cosmic Consciousness than in the rest.
p. 5"The strings of the harp of their Heart were so subtle, so sensitive and so tuned, that they could feel and let resound the most delicate vibrations of the spiritual world. They had made of their heart, through multiple incarnations, a sensitive disc on which the divine images of the higher spheres could engrave themselves. "Such souls were always the precursors of the new era, those who traced the path for new ideals and more evolved cultures.
"To these heralds of the spiritual Light humanity has always remained indebted in high degree. Their lives and actions remained — for centuries — incomprehensible or mysterious to their contemporaries. How many times did those souls sacrifice their lives for the expansion of divine ideals!
"It is in the century to come that humanity will live its resurrection, and many new laws will yet be taught, and many spiritual forces will be given, which the humanity of today could neither bear nor understand — for example: the remembrance of past lives…" Let us now leave the text of the Master Iranschaehr, for we have reached the point that refers to Cedaior: New laws will yet be taught and new spiritual forces will be given to humanity, affording it, among other qualities: the remembrance of past lives.
That is precisely what is found in the "Book of the Laws of Vayú", which Cedaior considered his principal work. The new scientific and psychic laws, which explain the development of a new human race, crystallisation and synthesis of those of the past, and the one that will people the sixth Continent.
That sixth Continent already rises in the Pacific Ocean; a few days ago we had the proof of this theory of Cedaior, now accepted by official science: the last earthquake of San Juan (Argentine Republic), like the greater part of those that occur in the West of the continent, was tectonic and not volcanic.
That means that such earthquakes occur through great "voids" produced in the interior of the earth, as a consequence of upliftings or eruptions happening in other places, probably near the site of the tectonic terrain — which, in the case cited, was not noticed, being probably within the Ocean. In truth, we are witnessing a grandiose spectacle of Nature.
While on the one hand there is the collapse of civilisations and peoples, and great modifications of the terrestrial surface causing those seismic movements, a new continent is arising near us, and the sufferings of all the nations bring to our shores families of the old continent.
The race that will people the Pacific Continent, Cedaior — by indication of his Master — called the Olympic Race, because it is "there and in it that will reincarnate all the powerful Entities that formerly formed the Olympi of the various Religions of the past". In it — which will be called the Great Race, as the 6th will be the Great Continent — will return all the Master Adepts.
Apostles and Great Initiates; and that race will represent a more elevated and beautiful expression of human life. Someone will ask: How does what will happen after centuries or millennia concern us? It concerns us because, on this continent, there is now being born the sub-race of the Fifth Root Race that will give the precursors of the Sixth, and which is therefore called the Primitive Olympic Sub-Race, or pre-Olympic.
p. 6Since we are the "last" of the fifth and the precursors of the sixth, we must have realised faculties of the 5th and try to develop in ourselves the abstract mind. According to the law that Cedaior explained in his book, not all of us are yet conscious of the abstract mind, but each "present" life gives us the possibility of laying the foundations.
It will surely be through Love and through Altruism; and therefore there is no more elevated maxim, to help us onward on the Path of Evolution, than that one so simple and so grandiose… and so difficult to realise upon earth: LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism — Historical-chronological notes on the Martinist Order. by Pitágoras, S.I. (Continuation) The Order of the Elect Cohens disappears as a visible organisation, and the Cohens — though they entered masonic Lodges of the Grand Orient or of the Strict Observance, or the Philaletes themselves — continue, nevertheless, to depend on an unknown chief at least until the year 1807.
In that year, in effect, Bacon de la Chevalerie, writing to the Marquis de Chefdebien, speaks of the "absolute silence of the Elect Cohens, ever working, under the greatest reserve, in execution of the supreme orders of the Master G∴ Z∴ W∴ J∴" In spite of the minute searches made by Fabre, it has not been possible to identify the person of this Sovereign Master hidden under those initials; but his direction must have been effective because the RR.
CC. continued performing initiations for the Order, though it no longer existed as an organised body. With the disappearance of the Order of the Elect Cohens as a visible and efficient organisation in 1880, we may — without taking account of the isolated or · 6 [Editorial gloss: the printed year contradicts the chapter, which closes the Cohen period toward the end of the eighteenth century.]
p. 7different activities of the Cohens in other masonic or spiritualist organisations in the following years — consider as closed the first great period of the history of Martinism, which, from the name of its founder, we have denominated Martinesism.
Born in 1767, this movement had, as its salient characteristic during the 13 years of its existence, an activity developed in the magical and ritualistic direction — an activity that was bound to be the logical and natural consequence of the orientation of him who gave it impulse: Martines de Pasqually.
We have seen how the activities of Jean-Baptiste Willermoz and of the Cohens of Lyon and Strasbourg were bound to have as their consequence, at once, the progressive estrangement of the Cohens from the primitive organisation and orientation, and the gradual creation of that influence which was to lead, as we shall see, to the creation of the degrees of the Profession in the Strict Observance — that is, the spiritualist movement we shall study further on under the denomination of Willermosism.
But, on the other hand, not all the Cohens followed Willermoz’s orientation, and preferred to follow the contemplative mystical way that Saint Martin pointed out to them. From this other tendency originated that other orientation which Saint Martin gave to primitive Martinesism, and which we shall study in due time under the denomination of Martinism.
Although these two movements marched parallel in time, we shall speak of Martinism only after having occupied ourselves with Willermosism — both to individualise them better, and because, owing to their different characteristics, while Willermosism is full of events of the utmost importance from the fact of working on the masonic and social plane, Martinism, owing to its activities on the intellectual, literary, mystical and spiritual plane — not in a formal organisation but individually — must consequently be much less rich in events, but not for that reason less vital. p. 8Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ Let us pass to examine the influences of the 9th Sign of the Zodiac: SAGITTARIUS, or the Archer or Centaur. This constellation, in its symbolic aspect, presents a double nature, for it symbolises reward [Sic: the Spanish prints 1a, with a numeral] or punishment, as well as the sport of the hunt.
It is found depicted under the figure of a Centaur, with his bow drawn, ready to loose the arrow. For that reason the Centaur was made to represent the sports of autumn: hunting "à courre", etc. Such a Centaur is also a symbol of authority and of wisdom. Mackey, speaking of that sign, expresses: "Nevertheless, the starry Centaur draws his bow to show his sentiment on what you have done here below".
Kabbalistically, the sign of Sagittarius represents the thighs of the Grand Universal Man, and therefore represents the muscular base of locomotion in humanity. It is the emblem of stability, of foundation and of physical power. It represents, also, the centres of authority and of command — physical, external.
Sagittarius, on the esoteric planisphere, is occupied by Joseph: "His bow abides in his strength, says the patriarch, and the arms of his hands were made strong". It represents, further, the powers "of Church and State" and the necessity of legal codes: civil, military and religious. It shows us the organising faculties of humanity and the absolute necessity of "powers that BE", at this or that degree of development.
We see in Joseph, the Egyptian master and legislator, the realised type of royal authority. The mystic gem of this influence is the carbuncle, which is a talisman of great power for those born under this sign. Sagittarius is the densest emanation of the trigon of Fire and is the constellation of Jupiter.
On the Intellectual Plane, Sagittarius represents the organising faculty of the spirit: hence its influence indicates the external faculties of command, of discipline and of obedience to the authority that rules material institutions. Individuals born under such an influence are loyal, patriotic, submissive to the law.
They are generous and free, energetic and combative, of lively temperament; they aspire to a position of power, being charitable toward the oppressed or afflicted. They possess strong conservative tendencies, their principal intellectual characteristics being rapidity of decision, cold blood, and skill in commanding or directing others.
On the physical plane, this sign commonly produces well-formed persons, of stature above the average, of sanguine complexion, oval face, shining chestnut hair, clear and lively eyes; in short, sympathetic persons. Those born under this influence are of active, energetic character, lovers of sports or pleasures in nature; they are animating, jovial, free and benevolent. Among plants, Sagittarius rules: agrimony, betony and mallow. Among stones: turquoise and all stones with a mixture of green and red.
p. 9THE DECANATES OF SAGITTARIUS ON THE ASCENDANT (according to Julevno). Sagittarius bestows, in a general way, a certain physical beauty, a well-proportioned body, an agreeable aspect, a tendency to baldness, a rather tall stature, high forehead, large nose, elongated face, eyes bluish or greyish, or of light tones when brown. Character: frank, loyal, a lover of what is upright and honourable, despising vileness and danger, devoted and generous.
A taste for hunting, sports and games. This sign has special influence over the thighs, buttocks and muscles, and has Jupiter for regent or lord. The first decanate (first 10 degrees) is governed by Mercury; it indicates much versatility or intelligence, upright judgment, many aptitudes but with a lack of method and of fixed direction.
Many sorrows in married life, struggles and oppositions. It promises success through one’s own merit, through the study of the natural sciences and of philosophy.
The second decanate (degrees 1 to 20) is under the influence of the Moon; it indicates a rich imagination, a taste for travel, a tendency to settle abroad and a probability of dying outside one’s fatherland. [Sic: so printed; the second decanate begins at the eleventh degree.] It indicates success, fortune, inheritance, and the patronage or direction of superior women.
The third decanate (degrees 21 to 30) is ruled by Saturn; it indicates a sober temperament, a pondered and philosophical spirit, which represses the force of the passions. Fortune will be difficult to attain, but is sure. Success in literary or scientific works.
It also produces artisans in metals. IF WE CONSIDER THE "FACES" OF SAGITTARIUS (divisions of 5.°), we shall see that, according to classical opinions gathered by Dr. Salmón, they indicate: 1st FACE (O.° to 5.º): Tall stature, broad shoulders, strong trunk, long face, high forehead, marked eyebrows, complexion swarthy or freckled, nose and mouth broad. [Sic: the zero is printed as a letter O.] The hair is somewhat wavy.
If Mars is found in this sign, it produces a mark or scar on the face. 2nd FACE (6.° to l0.°): A person of medium stature, well proportioned, a well-fleshed face, hair light chestnut, fair or reddish, dark eyes, and thick mouth and nose. [Sic: the ten is printed with a letter ell.] The fixed star "Antarés" is found here; it is of the Mercury-Mars vibration and produces activity and success.
3rd FACE (11.° to 15.°): Stature medium or low, plump of body and face, well-formed limbs, beautiful complexion, greyish or brown eyes, sparse, light eyebrows. The hair is usually straight, the mouth small and the lips thin. This face, which has the influence of Saturn and Venus, does not grant much happiness.
4th FACE (16.° to 20.°): A strong, robust, large person; a long and freckled face, matte complexion, sunken eyes, broad forehead, dark hair. Thin lips, voluminous nose, long arms and a modest attitude. 5th FACE (21 to 25.°): Medium stature, well proportioned, light complexion, large eyes, greyish or light, thin lips, a cordial aspect. The first degree of this face makes the hair dark or black.
p. 106th FACE (26.° to 30.°): A tall person of amiable aspect. Round face, light rosy complexion, features with a certain grace and a somewhat aquiline nose. This face usually produces workmen and artisans in metals.
INFLUENCE OF THE FACES OF SAGITTARIUS ON THE ASCENDANT (according to old authors). First face: A sober, honest, amiable character, of few words, a lover of peace, obliging, and with a tendency to melancholy. Second: A religious person, honest and loyal, a friend of faith, of study and of justice.
Third: A jovial, good person, a lover of duty and honourable, active, of good constitution, who will live many years. Fourth: Proud, a lover of flattery, a trafficker in religion, a hypocrite. Fifth: Violent, inconstant, deceiving, loquacious, jocular and coarse in words.
Sixth: Just, sincere, loyal and devoted but changeable, a friend of social life, lively and passionate. THE FACES OF SAGITTARIUS ON THE MIDHEAVEN: First face: Grants success and a certain fame. Second: Many friends and success as physician, priest or magistrate.
Third: Feminine protection, many friendships, ecclesiastical or administrative dignities. Fourth: Discredit or ruin caused by frequenting vulgar women. Fifth: Many sorrows in sentimental matters, or troubles through imprudence. [Sic: the Spanish prints Musías, for Muchas.] Sixth: May attain a function in the Army or in the Church, but without great distinction.
This face usually indicates physicians, chemists, pharmacists and druggists. It is a general tendency of Sagittarius toward "administration", and therefore those born in this sign have the capacity, the tendency or the opportunity to administer the goods or money of others. According to the face in which they are born and the aspects, they will do it "well or badly", but the tendency exists in almost all of them. · 10
p. 11Principles of the Yoga Mudra. The mysterious, mystical and mute language of the Spirit and of the Exalted Beings who dwell in the invisible planes superior to our physical world. By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ This brief article on Yoga Mudra ought not to be brought to light, since these subjects form a very advanced part of the Yogas that we propose to publish in book form.
The comprehension and assimilation of this magical mute language is not, naturally, easy to interpret, it being necessary to have developed a supersensibility in what concerns plastic forms, besides a possibility of development of the etheric vision permitting one thus to see, feel and live the mysterious, mystical and sacred language developed by the inhabitants of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh dimensions of space.
This article is dedicated to all those who have already rendered a true cult to the beautiful, and to those who, though they may not have developed a vision of the supraphysical world, possess an exquisite sensibility permitting them at least to vibrate harmoniously with that world of marvels — the first step toward realisation. The name of mudras has been given to a set of secret signs made with the hands and fingers.
The mudras are also "mystic seals" projected into the ether by means of the hands and fingers, thus creating in space true magnetic points of protection, projection and irradiation which are, for the true initiate and magician, points of support for his mystical work and his relation with the invisible world.
The mudras have always been the true code of communication between the initiates of East and West; they enclose and synthesise all the high occult science. When Initiates of East and West find themselves face to face, only with the mudras can they, should the case arise, establish between themselves a true language that permits them to know the degree and hierarchy they possess, and also to transmit to one another the high knowledge.
Just as two mutes can understand one another by the movements of their fingers and hands when they form the letters of the alphabet with special signs, so too, when an Initiate wishes to put himself in contact with the High Beings of the higher planes, he sets in action a mute language expressed with the fingers which, helped by word and thought, increases his power, arriving thus where he must arrive, immediately provoking an intercommunication between the two planes. · 11 The Supreme divinity created the whole Universe with Thought and the word, and synthesised it with the gesture. [Sic: the Spanish prints mudras where the sense is mudos, mutes.] When "Fiat Lux et Luz facta est" was said, the creating hands performed the great miracle conceived by Thought and expressed by the Voice.
p. 12All the beings of the different planes of Nature possess their own language — the fishes, the birds, the plants, etc. — and communicate among themselves by the means of expression corresponding to their natures. Why, then, should the Beings more evolved than ourselves, and who for that very reason belong to planes more elevated than ours, not have their own?
Human beings need, to communicate among themselves, the word emitted by the larynx — the word that permits them to express all their thoughts, desires, joys and sorrows.
The more evolved a being is, in our world, the fewer words he needs to express himself; and, as he goes on acquiring wisdom, the less he needs to speak, for he expresses everything telepathically; while, inversely, the less evolved a being is, the more words he needs, coming to speak continually, since he is not accustomed to think and needs therefore to live in bustle. The language of the fool is noisy, strident, sour and continuous.
The language of the sage is smooth, sweet, measured and… silent. We have said that the mudras are not only secret signs, but also ancient Sanskrit characters of magical efficacy. The ancient Hierophants of Egypt, the Priests of all the Religions, the Initiates, Kabbalists, the Lamas of Tibet, etc., also spoke, by means of the mudras, a mystical and symbolic language.
The Catholic Church itself employs certain magical signs. The Popes receive, at the moment of the transmission of their high hierarchic degree, a true collection of mudras which are to serve them for transmitting the blessing. We have said that, the more evolved a being was, the fewer words he needed to express his thought.
Let us now see in what manner the Beings who dwell in the higher spheres, and who are invisible to our eyes and senses, avail themselves to communicate from time to time with us.
As it is not possible for them to employ a language identical to ours — since in the modality of life of the plane to which they belong there does not exist language by the larynx, in the form in which we perceive it with our limited comprehension — they express themselves by means of plastic, luminous and coloured signs, variable according to the planes of evolution to which they belong.
If an elevated Being should desire to communicate with some mortal in a Temple or other place, he will avail himself of a person who is in vibratory affinity with Him — which implies a previous preparation of that person by the Master, in this or in previous incarnations. In this case the Master expresses himself availing himself of the disciple or Chela, who will thus reproduce His thoughts, words or gestures.
In such a form, the Master will be able to impart, by means of the disciple’s hands, blessings, projections of magnetic force, etc., which will come to influence the ambience, objects and beings gathered in the Temple where the magical operation is performed.
Thus is explained the special etheric vibration in that ambience, perceptible by many; the therapeutic results obtained on the sick, present or distant; and the presence of other Masters who are attracted by that etheric vibration.
p. 13So it happens with the Elevated Beings. They sometimes saturate us with their etheric hands — through human hands, which they put on like gloves, of the person who serves them as intermediary of their powerful magnetism — to heal, bless, harmonise, protect and elevate our vibratory tonic, thus preparing it so that, becoming pure and clean, the Master may make himself present.
All the Masters of the ancient secret schools — Yogacharyas of Northern Buddhism, the Hindu Tantrikas and the Lamas of Tibet — communicate by this means with their disciples after these have received the great Initiation.
If human beings could see what happens in those instants, when some great Beings grant us the so uncommon happiness of visiting us and, through the intermediary of their Chelas, transmit to us a whole blessing, a whole revelation, we should be left astonished, and the only thing we could do in those instants is to fall on our knees and give thanks with our hearts full of devotion for that privilege bestowed.
We should see that from the hands issue true jets of fire of all colours; that the ether of our ambience is transformed little by little until it acquires, at times, a blue, celeste, yellow, violet, silvery or golden colour, according to the spiritual hierarchy of the visitant.
We should see that, at times, these forces work upon our lower vehicles to accelerate their evolution and open to us new horizons that will permit us to be better and purer, and will also prepare for us the initiatic road on which we shall be permitted to stand face to face with our Master. Each movement expresses some sense. Each mudra expresses some sensation.
We shall give an example with the five mudras that we publish. Mudra No. 1 is called Abhaya Mudra and projects an energy of security and protection.
No. 2, Anjali Hasta Mudra, a gesture of adoration, imploration of the Divinity. No.
3, Dhyana Mudra, is a posture of meditation. No. 4, Shuci Hasta Mudra, is a sign of polarisation.
No. 5, Kartari Mukha Mudra, the one that has the virtue of setting in action the electricity of the body when the electric and magnetic poles of the human body are known. We make vows that these crumbs of the magical science may come to awaken new knowledge and understanding in all those who cultivate the desire to feel nearer to them the call of the Master.

p. 17Suddha Dharma Mandalam. The Avatara of BHAGAVAN MITRA DEVA, Instructor of the World, by Dr. S. Subramani Iyer.
LL. D. (Swami Subrahananiananda) PROEM1 In the course of the introduction, in English, to the Upadghata of Hamsa Yogi (Introduction to the study of the Bhagavad Gita), which has been published as one of the volumes of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam series, allusion is made to the birth of Bhagavan Mitra Deva as a great Instructor.
When that publication appeared, little was known about him save by a few select Members of the Mandala who occupied an elevated rank in the Organisation. Since then, we know that a work has been composed in Sanskrit (which will fill a volume of five hundred pages, double-crown size) about His Advent as a Master of the Suddha Dharma, and about His mission.
SUCH A BOOK IS TO SERVE AS AN AUTHENTIC HISTORY OF THE SAID SUBJECT, TO BE PRESERVED IN THE ARCHIVES OF THE MANDALA. Whether this history will be published, or not, in the near future and in a form accessible to readers in general, is more than can be said at present.
However, readers will find in the following pages a translation of a brief memorandum on the matter, compiled as prompt information by the members of the Mandala, who see in Bhagavan Mitra Deva the World Instructor who is coming. That memorandum concludes with the return of the Deva to Brahma Vanam, one of the secluded retreats of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam, situated on the confines of Kashmir toward the South.
No information is yet announced regarding the later activities of the Infant Instructor, who at present is about six years of age2. This may possibly be attributed to its being judged premature to enter into such matters. 1 "Guindy House", Madras, December 1933.
2 This proem was, then, written in 1923. [Editorial gloss: so printed; the two footnote dates contradict one another.] · 17
p. 18I believe that, to conclude these few lines, I may add a few words respecting what may be considered the first tangible exteriorisation of the events narrated in the summary here translated.
And it is that the enthusiasm awakened among the members of the Mandala by these events has been so vehement that it has made many of the members of the Mandala, who until now had devoted themselves to a silent spiritual work, resolve to go forth into the world to preach the Suddha Dharma and try to carry out reforms in the life of people in general — not only in India, but also in other countries — and thus lead them materially to their well-being.
And it appears that four very highly placed members of the Mandala, namely: Swami Sivananda, Swami Atreyananda and two others, well versed in the English language, have already arrived in the United States of America and are studying the conditions of that country before beginning their work as initiators in this movement.
Considering how well endowed these ascetics are for the noble enterprise they have undertaken, it is sincerely to be desired that such a contingent of workers, of extraordinary character, give impulse to the cause of reconstruction, today so urgent everywhere.
May their self-denying labour, through the grace of Bhagavan Náráyana, in whose name they always act, bring its legitimate contribution toward realising those noble hopes which the new dispensation — universally believed to be already near and within human reach — will bring with it: fundamental and salutary changes in social, national and racial life throughout the world, which cannot but put an end to the many evils that today afflict humanity, and thereby better its conditions in all respects for the centuries to come.
Signed: S. Subramaniyam. Version: THE PROPHECY.
The sages hold it for certain that when, as is proclaimed in the Bhagavatgita, justice diminishes in the world and the just find themselves subjected to misery, the Supreme Lord — of true and pure Will and Determination, who has taken upon himself the heavy duty of governing the world, which no one but He is capable of executing fully — appears Himself, or takes Avataras in the persons of the Hierarchs and, putting an end to all suffering, restores and protects justice in the world3.
On the day of the Full Moon of Vaisakh of each year, the Hierarchs of the Suddha Dharma Mandala, who consist of Siddhas, Maharishis and Rishis, gather in assembly in the region of Badari Vana known as Visala Badari and, ever watching over the welfare of the 3 (Bhagavat Gita, S. D. M., edition III, 13-14): "Whenever justice diminishes and injustice revives in the world, then, O Bhárata, I send Beings (into the world).
At each change of century, I myself appear in the world to protect those who follow Justice and to correct those who obstruct its march, as also to re-establish the eternal Dharma". · 18
p. 19world, celebrate a great festivity in the course of which they invoke and offer blessings for the world. In accordance with this custom, during the festivity that took place at the Full Moon of Vaisakh of the First Parva of the Five-Hundredth (500.°) Sankalpa4 (corresponding to 11 May 1892), after the customary prayers and blessings had been carried out, an important conference of the great Beings there congregated took place.
Vajradeva5, a Siddha who was present in the assembly, rose and, with joined hands, spoke to them in the following manner. He said that, since the beginning of the Four-Hundred-and-Seventy-Sixth Sankalpa (476.°) — approximately the year 1450 after Christ — Avataras and other manifestations had appeared for the propagation of the Suddha Dharma and for the teaching of the Yoga Brahma Vidya, or Synthetic Science of the Absolute.
He reminded the audience how, with the purpose of reviving this Ancient Sanatana Dharma and of placing it on a solid base, there have appeared since that Sankalpa no fewer than forty-three Beings who were inspired with the sovereign influence of the Lord, twenty-four great Beings who at present are really inspired by Him, and seven6 AVATARAS of the Lord Himself, in the persons of the seven great Siddhas: Tepana, Badara, Nandobhadra, Dasanatha, Rinkana, Pandara and Nakayogi.
All these manifestations occurred in diverse places and climes. Once the object in view for these important manifestations was fulfilled, the respective great Beings returned to their own places and spheres.
The influence and practice of the Suddha Dharma having since diminished, through the prolonged lapse of time and other causes, the speaker insisted that, according to the Lord’s wishes, it was the duty of the Hierarchs to do whatever was necessary for the restoration of this Ancient Dharma. When Vajradeva concluded his peroration, the great Muktadeva7, inspired by the Lord, spoke to the assembly.
He supported all that the previous speaker had said, and added that 4 SANKALPA is the unit by which the members of the Suddha Dharma Mandala count time, and consists of a period of twenty-four years, each of which is called a Parva. 5 VAJRADEVA: The Siddha referred to by the second syllable of the verse (in the Sanskrit text: Namasté N. etc…).
The said thirty-two syllables are the initials of the thirty-two great Siddhas, assistants of the Lord Náráyana. 6SEVEN AVATARAS: TEPANA: the Siddha referred to by the third syllable of the verse already cited. His Avatara was a Buddhist Monk at Hardwar.
BADARA: the one alluded to by the seventeenth syllable. His Avatara took place abroad. NANDABHADRA: the one alluded to by the thirty-first syllable.
His Avatara likewise proceeded in a foreign place. DASANATHA: the one alluded to by the eighteenth syllable. His Avatara was known by the name of Lord Gauranga.
RINKHANA: the one alluded to by the nineteenth syllable. His Avatara was as a Sannyasin in the District of Trichinopoly, belonging to the jurisdiction of Madras. PANDARA: the one alluded to by the twenty-eighth syllable.
p. 20someone of well-known position in the Outer World would be chosen, and through him the greatest possible efforts would be made to inculcate the practice of the Suddha Dharma among the people; and that this was the procedure to be adopted to carry the Lord’s Will into effect. He declared, moreover, that such restoration would begin toward the end of the Five-Hundredth (500.º) Sankalpa (approximately in 1916, A.
D.) and would continue apace in that lapse of the said Sankalpa and after it; and that, during the second Parva of the (501.º) Five-Hundred-and-First Sankalpa (1918-1919) there would appear a fragment, an AMSA of the Lord Náráyana, who would act availing himself of a Siddha and would spread through all the world the principles of the Suddha Dharma; and, in consequence, that all should strive to do what was necessary in order to make the preparations for this Great Event. [Sic: the Spanish prints e1, with a numeral.] He ended by saying that at each Full Moon of Vaisakh special blessings would be invoked with respect to this Avatara and for the adequate fulfilment of his mission.
This announcement was received with acclamations of joy by the Mahatmas there present, who were under the powerful influence of the Lord Náráyana, Nara, Yoga Devi, Dakshinamurti and the Kumaras. [Sic: the Spanish prints Nora, for Nara.] Thirteen years after that meeting in Visala Badari — that is, in the thirteenth Parva of the (500.º) Five-Hundredth Sankalpa (approximately the year 1905) — an Assembly of some of the Hierarchs took place at the Pitta of the Suddha Dharma Mandala in the Kolli range.
The meeting was presided over by Yagnanandana Siddha, the Chief in charge of the Pitta, or Seat.
The Mahatma Dharmadeva, addressing the audience, reminded it of the conference of Visala Badari already described, and observed that the moment had come to choose the person in the Outer World who was to be the channel for the propagation of the Suddha Dharma, and that the Masters, with the help of their Yogic powers, would do what was necessary; that, in view of the imminence of the Avatara, it was necessary to introduce certain changes with respect to the work of the Mandala; and that many reforms would have to be carried out in the life of the people in order to assure their well-being.
When Dharmadeva brought his peroration to an end, seven of the Mahatmas there present took upon themselves the work for the cause, with the help of their mystic powers. PEACE TO THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. (To be continued) · 20
p. 21The Miracle. by Andrea Majocchi (trans. by Pitágoras S. I.) But behold, all eyes turn toward the Cathedral. A wild clamour bursts from thousands of breasts.
The procession comes out of the arch of the Temple, slow and solemn: first the clergy with the great cross, then the delegations of the pilgrimages, the banners, the gonfalons shining with gold; then the priests singing at the top of their voices the praises of the Lord and, finally, the resplendent gilded canopy borne by four ecclesiastics.
Beneath the canopy, the Most Holy Sacrament, in a glory of gold and precious stones, is religiously upheld by a high Prelate.
The procession descends slowly and directs itself toward the right side of the immense square; the multitude stirs and moves, fluctuating almost like a sea in tempest; the invocations become shrieks, the faces assume improbable expressions; the arms, the hands of the sick stretch toward the canopy…; when, behold, a most piercing cry is heard near the Prelate: a sick woman has risen from her stretcher, has thrown off the covers and has stood up.
A disorderly movement has been produced in the multitude; the woman is assailed from all sides; the tumult threatens to crush her, to suffocate her. All want to see the woman who received the miracle; all yearn to touch her. Those nearest embrace her with evident effusion of enthusiasm.
With difficulty the brancardiers surround and defend her, forming around her a protective cuirass; then they carry her, lifting her, toward the stair of the Bureau des constatations. A few minutes later the door of the office opens and there she is, before us, still accompanied and defended by the brancardiers, but also followed by a multitude of the curious who try to burst into the place and are repelled with difficulty.
The young woman is still dominated by the excitement, in a state almost of delirium. She seems as if half-dreaming, with dilated eyes, and does nothing but repeat mechanically, almost unconsciously, the same words: "Je suis guérie… je suis guérie!... Doctor Boissarie, accustomed to these scenes, does not lose his composure.
He gently makes her lie down on the examination bed, leaves her quiet for a moment and, meanwhile, tries to obtain from the relatives some anamnestic information. But the family, too, seem crazed. They do nothing but stammer some broken and incoherent phrases.
The sister, however, presents a sheet, a medical certificate from a Paris practitioner, which attests that the young woman, for ten years, has been affected by tuberculosis of the dorso-lumbar vertebral column; a spondylitis that began slowly and was treated by all possible means, by the application of corsets, solar cures, iodine cures, etc. In the patient a gibbosity had also formed and, finally, a paralysis of the lower extremities had manifested itself, so that the unhappy woman was obliged · 21
p. 22to keep continually to her bed. In recent years she not only could not walk, but could not even stand. These reports were followed by a summary description of the gibbosity and of a voluminous cold abscess which occupied, at the moment of departure from Paris, the right iliac fossa.
This abscess, in the physician’s opinion, was to be aspirated; but the patient, before submitting to further treatments, had wished to come to Lourdes, and here she had been transported on a stretcher — for she was incapable of moving — accompanied by her relatives and under their complete responsibility.
Doctor Boissarie read the sheet rapidly, then passed to the examination of the patient who, meanwhile, had calmed down a little and had also undressed with the help of the family. She presented an evident lumbo-dorsal gibbosity, but not a painful one; of the cold abscess in the iliac fossa, no trace. The motility, the sensibility, the reflexes of the lower extremities proved perfectly normal.
Although the muscular masses were a little atrophied, the young woman still moved and raised her legs. Invited to rise, she stood up and was able to walk. An exclamation of surprise escaped from those present, among whom were many physicians.
Boissarie read the sheet again; but he did not seem entirely convinced; he wished he had had a greater quantity of information: a more exact clinical history, radiographs... Oh, if the physician who was treating her had come in person, accompanying her! On the contrary, the two women — the patient and her sister — had come to Lourdes without having even joined a pilgrimage, and therefore the testimony of the train practitioner was also lacking.
The doctor questioned the relatives again and examined the girl once more. Conscientious as he was, the distinguished practitioner was truly troubled; he did not know how to proceed and, at last, took the wisest course — that is, to keep the girl under observation, postponing all judgment.
Meanwhile the procession of the Sacrament had ended; the crowd had dispersed in various directions: part into the ample basilica, part directed toward the Grotto and part, finally, had returned to the lodgings and the hotels. That multiform, cosmopolitan crowd was still vibrant with ardour and almost as if electrified by the suggestive ambience.
I too abandoned my observation post, took leave of Doctor Boissarie and, step by step, returned to the hotel, passing again through that hubbub of vendors and hawkers, through that noisy multitude of pilgrims, but seeing nothing, paying no attention. My mind was too saturated with impressions, and my spirit with emotions. I had always before my eyes those ecstatic faces with piety in their expression, those imploring, tearful gazes.
I still heard the heart-rending cries of the faithful: O Seigneur, guérissez nos malades! Figlio di Davide, abbi pietá de noi! · 22
p. 23and the arms stretched toward the canopy resplendent with gold, almost as if they wished to do violence to the Divine will to wrest the grace from it. A spectacle of suffering and of faith! And, from among the multitude of the sick, there rose obstinately to my imagination the woman with the ulcerated sores and the girl of the spondylitis.
How to explain these cases? By means of what unknown metabolic processes had those sores, which had lasted for years, disappeared, cicatrising in a few days? And that the sores had existed there was no doubting, because the recent scars attested it.
Perhaps the ulcers were not varicose; perhaps the diagnosis had been mistaken; but, even if they were of another nature — for example tubercular or syphilitic — their cure was no easier to explain for that. When was a tubercular or syphilitic sore ever seen to heal in a few hours? And that they had healed rapidly was attested also by the relatives, and still more by the nurses of the "Asile" who had dressed them some days before.
And the girl of the spondylitis? Was the cure, in this case, less strange? In this case there existed, moreover, a medical certificate of indisputable value and of recent date.
The tuberculosis of the last dorsal vertebrae and of the first lumbar existed without any doubt, since the gibbosity was plainly visible; and the paralysis — or at least the paresis — of the lower extremities had undoubtedly existed, since the girl for a long time had been unable to move on her stretcher. Not even the hypotrophy of the muscular masses was a symptom not to be valued.
It is true that, if one wishes to split hairs, one could think that, during the time elapsed in the long illness, the inflammatory process had disappeared and the lesions had gone on cicatrising.
So that the nervous elements contained in the rachidian canal might also have improved their state and found again the conditions necessary for their function — a possibility of function of which the patient had no knowledge, accustomed [Sic: the Spanish prints 1o, with a numeral] as she had long been to immobility. A powerful psychic shock could have acted as a stimulus, awakening her from that torpor as a whiplash acts on an exhausted horse.
Very well. And the cold abscess? That voluminous iliac abscess verified by the practitioner before the departure for Lourdes, into which he was preparing to plunge the trocar for aspiration?
Where had all that corruption gone? Perhaps the fatigue of the journey and above all the jolting of the train had provoked the rupture of the abscess into a hollow organ — for example into the bladder or the intestine — and the pus had issued with the urine or the faeces. But when was an iliac abscess of spondylitic origin ever seen to open into the bladder or the rectum?
And, even if this had happened, can one think the girl would not have noticed so abundant an evacuation of pus in the urine or with the faecal matter? It is certain that there is nothing absolute in clinical practice but, in this case, · 23
p. 24one had to admit the coincidence of a quantity of facts, each more singular and strange than the other. Such thoughts tormented my mind during the afternoon and robbed me of sleep during the night. When I rose the following morning I was still impressed and tired; I had even forgotten that, in the afternoon, we had to depart on the return to Italy.
Those few days of pilgrimage had passed rapidly; they had been days of emotion and surprises. At three in the afternoon all the Italian pilgrims were to gather at the station. Our train awaited us under the broad shed.
All were punctual. I found again my travelling companions, sad at returning so soon, who kept repeating that they would gladly have stayed on in that dream country, in that atmosphere of enthusiasm. I passed the sick in review; they were still in the same condition as before; no cure, no improvement.
I expected to hear words expressing feelings of regret, recriminations or disillusion — but nothing of all that. I found, on the contrary, all resigned and almost as if reanimated. Some manifested the intention of returning another year — of returning again and again until the Blessed Virgin should have granted them the grace.
Others were full of confidence and intimately persuaded that their cure would come about after the return. At Lourdes they had implored the Virgin; at home they would continue their prayers, and the grace would console them. Was it not written: Pulsate et aperietur vobis?
Into all, in short, without distinction, there had penetrated a feeling of relief; a strength of spirit, a strange and ineffable serenity, a moving resignation. I found the blind woman again — blind as before — at the back of a third-class carriage. She was huddled in a little corner, holding fast to her husband’s arm.
I called her by name, asking her how she was. She recognised me by my voice, because I had taken great interest in her and had expressed to her many wishes for her cure. She thanked me in a moved voice.
I wished her a cure after the return. She answered me: "If the Lord wills it, I shall be cured; but I am content all the same, because I am sure that I shall see my children in Paradise…" I withdrew with tears in my eyes, astonished, amazed, full of admiration. But how?
All those people had come to Lourdes to implore graces and cures, had borne sacrifices, suffered unspeakable fatigues, enduring in morbid conditions the hard fatigues of the journey, without obtaining anything — and yet each one returned resigned, relieved, serene. Not one word of discouragement, not one accent of rebellion. If nothing more than this had happened — was not this alone a miracle? THE END · 24

otoño: caza “a courre” etc.
legales: civiles, militares y religiosos.

FAZ 1.ª (O.° a 5.º): Estatura elevada, hombros anchos, tronco fuerte, rostro largo,
frente alta, cejas marcadas, tez trigueña o con pecas, nariz y boca anchas. Los cabellos son.
algo ondulados.
carnoso, cabellos castaño claro, rubio o rojizo, ojos oscuros y boca y nariz gruesas.
tez mate, ojos hundidos frente ancha, cabellos oscuros. Labios delgados, nariz voluminosa,
brazos largos y actitud modesta.
FAZ 5.ª (21 a 25.°): Estatura mediana, bien proporcionada, tez clara, ojos grandes
y grisáceos o claros, labios delgados, aspecto cordial.

Por Asuri Kapila S:: I::

Tepana, Badara, Nandobhadra, Dasanatha, Rinkana, Pandara y Nakayogi. Todas

poderes.

El Milagro.
por Andrea Majocchi
(trad. por Pitágoras S. I.)
invocaciones se vuelven alaridos, los rostros asumen expresiones inverosímiles;
familiares parecen enloquecidos. Ellos no hacen sino balbucear algunas frases entrecortadas
e incoherentes.

a guardar continuamente cama.
ayuda do los familiares. Presentaba una gibosidad lombo-dorsal evidente, pero no dolorosa;
aquellas miradas implorantes y lagrimosas.

¿Adónde había ido a parar toda aquella podredumbre?

¿No estaba escrito: Pulsate et aperietur vobis?
En todos, en fin, indistintamente, había penetrado un sentimiento de alivio;
Me
