p. 4Commentary on the First Degree of Martinism — Historical-chronological notes on the Martinist Order. by Pitágoras, S.I. (Continuation) 1767 — 21 March.— Constitution, in Paris, of the Sovereign Tribunal of the Order of the Elect Cohens, with Bacon de La Chevalerie as Universal Substitute and with Onésime Henri de Loos, prince of Lusignan, Bonnichon or Du Guers, and Fauger d’Ignéacourt as members.
May. — Initiation, at Versailles, after a moving ceremony, of Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, who returned at once to Lyon with the degree of Commander of East and West and the functions of Inspector General of the Order. May. — Return to Bordeaux of Martines de Pasqually after having passed through Amboise, Blois, Tours, Poitiers, La Rochelle, Rochefort, Saintes and Blaye.
27 August.—Marriage of Martines de Pasqually to Miss Marguerite Angélique Collas de Saint Michel, niece of a former major of the Regiment of Foix and daughter of Anselme Collas. 1768.— Difficulties, dissensions, misunderstandings and disorder among the Cohens owing to the dissolving manoeuvres of Blanquet and above all of Du Guers. The latter, known to Martines in Paris and named R.
C. and member of the Sovereign Tribunal, arbitrarily modified the rituals and committed an innumerable series of abuses until Martines expelled him in November 1768. 13 March.— Elevation of J. B.
Willermoz, in Paris, to the degree of R.C. 17 June.— Birth of the first son of Martines, to whom was given the name Jean Jacques Philippe. [Sic: the Spanish prints primor for primer.] This son, destined to be Martines’s successor, was baptised on 20 June in the parish of Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux. He disappeared in the whirlwind of the French Revolution without anyone ever having any news of him. · 4
p. 5August-October.— Louis Claude de Saint Martin — born on 18 January 1743 at Amboise in Touraine, advocate and lieutenant [Sic: the Spanish prints 1ugarteniente, with a numeral] in the Infantry Regiment of Foix from 26 July 1765 — came to know Martines de Pasqually through Grainville and was initiated into the Order of the Elect Cohens, probably by de Balzac, between August and October of 1768.
1769.— January.— Expulsion of Du Guers from France by the Tribunal of Bordeaux and his embarkation for Cayenne. Initiation at Bordeaux, by Martines, of the abbé Fournier, cleric of the diocese of Lyon. Great interest in the Order of the Elect Cohens, into which many masons of elevated social position asked to be initiated.
In spite of the disorder provoked by Blanquet and Du Guers, many Chapters had been founded, among which we mention those of Bordeaux, Montpellier, Avignon, Foix, Libourne, La Rochelle, Eu, Paris, Lyon, Versailles, Metz, etc. 1770.— January.— Fournier is named secretary to Martines, an office he will discharge until 1771, the year in which he will be replaced by Saint Martin. The administrative disorganisation still continues in the Order.
To eliminate all the causes or obstacles that might impede its normal functioning, Grainville proposed that Martines should move to Paris and that his debts should be paid. This proposal was not accepted by the RR. CC. of the Sovereign Tribunal of Paris.
Frequent exchange of letters among Champollon, Grainville, Willermoz and Saint Martin, consulting one another on the most suitable resolutions to be taken for a complete reorganisation of the Order. April.— Interview in Paris between Grainville, Willermoz and probably Lusignan and Bacon de la Chevalerie, at which Martines was offered the payment of his debts and his removal to Paris. 11 July.— Martines replies to the proposals of the RR.
CC., refusing the offer and the other proposals. Calm and order reign once more among the Cohens. 1771.— At the beginning of the year, Saint Martin definitively abandons military service to devote himself completely to the spiritual life.
He establishes his residence at Bordeaux and is named secretary to Martines de Pasqually in substitution of Fournier, an office he will discharge until 1773. The true organisational work of the Order really began from the moment Saint Martin took up his functions as secretary. Everything the various Chapters lacked is sent them abundantly by Saint Martin.
Martines de Pasqually begins to write the Treatise on Reintegration. 1772.— 17 April.— Elevation of Saint Martin and Du Serre to the degree of R. C.
5 May.— Martines de Pasqually embarks for the island of Santo Domingo with the purpose of going to collect an inheritance.
p. 6Du Serre is named Substitute of Martines. The Sovereign Tribunal is composed of Saint Martin, Willermoz, Duroy D’Hauterive and the prince of Lusignan. This Tribunal does not in reality exercise an effective directive or orienting function.
The personal influence of the RR. CC. can manifest itself and thus begin to give other orientations to the Order — among them, those of Saint Martin and Willermoz. At the end of the year Willermoz again develops an intense activity in masonry with Bacon de La Chevalerie and others, putting himself in contact with the Lodge Candeur of Strasbourg and, through it, with the Strict Observance of Baron von Hundt.
That activity provokes the displeasure of Martines de Pasqually. 1773.—Martines de Pasqually founds at Port-au-Prince, in Santo Domingo, a Sovereign Tribunal for the colony, with Caignet de Lester as Substitute of the Grand Master, and two Chapters, one at Port-au-Prince and the other at Leogane. The Order prospers on the island.
Du Serre continually receives instructions from Martines and all study material. May.— Du Serre makes a journey to Lyon on a visit to the brothers of that city, where he was received by Dr. Pierre Jacques Willermoz and Orsel. 10 September.— Saint Martin arrives at Lyon, where he will remain almost a year in Willermoz’s company, attending to the instruction of the Cohens and writing his first work: Des Erreurs et de la Vérité.
October.— Martines communicates that all correspondence must be directed to Caignet de Lester, since his intention is to name him his Substitute. 1774.— 3 August.— Martines de Pasqually communicates that he has named Caignet de Lester as his successor.
This office is discharged by Lester until 11 December 1778, the year of his death at Port-au-Prince. [Sic: printed Siciembre, for Diciembre.] 20 September.— Martines de Pasqually dies at Port-au-Prince, in consequence of an infection provoked by two great boils, one on the left arm and the other on the right leg. His remains lie in an unknown place.
At the very moment of the disincarnation, his companion, while occupied with a piece of embroidery in her house at Bordeaux, saw him cross the room diagonally from East to West, and so plainly that, in the presence of many persons, she exclaimed: "Ah my God, my husband is dead!
Saint Martin, presaging his death, wrote to Willermoz on 2 October — that is, when no one yet knew of the Master’s death: "I desire, it is true, to see him again, but it is a desire we shall hold for a long time. God’s will be done". (To be continued). · 6
p. 7Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ We shall now study the influences of the 7th Zodiacal Sign: LIBRA, or The Balance. The Rosicrucian J.
Burgoyne, author of "The Light of Egypt", tells us that this constellation, under its symbolic aspect, represents Justice. Our readers doubtless know the goddess of justice, represented by a woman, blindfolded and with a balance in her hand. That concept is distinctly astrological and refers to the celestial Balance of the Heavens.
The Sun enters that sign about 21 September when, as the poet Manilius says: "Day and night are weighed in the pans of the Balance; equal for a certain time, and, finally, night triumphs". (In the Northern hemisphere). Kabbalistically, the sign of the Balance signifies the reins and hips of the Grand Celestial Man and, therefore, represents the conserver or central reservoir of the reproductive fluids.
It is also the magnetic vortex of the procreative force. This constellation also represents, in its most internal aspect, the equinoctial point of the arc in the ascending and descending cycle of the vital atom. For that reason, that sign represents and contains the unification of the cosmic forces, being the great central point of equilibrium of the sphere.
The Balance, on the esoteric planisphere, is occupied by Dan. The patriarch, in his blessing, alludes to that celestial nature in the following terms: "Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel". The Balance represents the internal equilibrium of the forces of nature and contains the mystery of the divine expiation in the ancient Initiations.
On the universal map, that sign becomes Enoch, the perfect man. Its mystic gem is the diamond. As a magnetic talisman, this stone acts as a repellent force and combines with the magnetic sphere of those born under that influence, to repel the emanations of foreign bodies, whether things or persons.
The Balance is the second emanation of the triplicity of Air and is the constellation of Venus. On the intellectual Plane, the Balance signifies external perception, balanced by intuition; their union is exteriorised in the form of reason and of "prescience" (presentiment or premonition). Therefore, those who are governed by this influence constitute the rationalist school among the thinkers of the world.
Theoretically, they are firm defenders of the doctrines of universal fraternity and of human rights. But, practically, they rarely put their favourite theories into action (except in the case that they profit something by it).
Those born under the sign of the Balance, though they possess a splendidly balanced intellectual and magnetic organism, rarely succeed in rising to very eminent positions, because they are too "equal", too levelled, intellectually and physically, to become popular leaders of any action, radical or sensational.
It is, then, an attribute of the Balance to infuse into all who are born under its influence a natural instinct that makes them accept the "golden mean" or, as it has been called, the happy medium. Therefore, generally, they impose equal respect on both extremes in any debate.
p. 8hair, blue and luminous eyes and a beautiful complexion. The character is noble, amiable, haughty, but good.
It should be borne in mind that this sign often gives dark chestnut or black hair, and very beautiful features, especially in a feminine figure. [Sic: the Spanish prints Conviene viene, doubling the word.] Among other plants, this sign rules: water-cress, the white rose, the strawberry, the primrose, the vine, the violet, the tricolour violet, the lemon balm, the lemon and the pansy.
Among stones: white marble, feldspar and all the white quartzes. THE DECANATES OF LIBRA ON THE ASCENDANT (according to Julevno). The Balance, in a general way, bestows a slender and tall stature, round face, straight and rather small nose, white and rosy complexion, long fine hair — fair or in chestnut tones — agreeable features, eyes black or grey-blue.
With age the complexion may become dry or pimpled. The character is usually wilful, somewhat ambitious, of even temper, with a tendency to goodness and to mercy or pity. It bestows further: penetration of judgment, elevated tastes, love of music and painting.
This sign has influence over the hips and the reins, and conveys the influence of Venus, its ruler. The first decanate of Libra (first 10 degrees) is governed by the Moon. It indicates a weak character, intelligent but easily influenced and somewhat extravagant.
Such a person will be changeable, will possess very diversified aptitudes, frequently changing position and projects, and may attain honours and fortune or some public function. The second decanate (degrees 11 to 20) is ruled by Saturn. That decanate implies much love of the home, stability in the affections, great changes — "ups and downs" — during the existence, often through one’s own fault.
But, after many probations, well-being comes toward the end of life. Marriage does not bring much happiness. The third decanate (degrees 21 to 30) is ruled by Jupiter: it makes the person good and generous, a faithful and considerate friend; it bestows luck, wealth, numerous journeys and a happy marriage.
IF WE CONSIDER THE "FACES" OF LIBRA (divisions of 5°) we shall see that, according to classical opinions gathered by Dr. Salmón, they indicate: 1st FACE (0° to 5°): A tall and well-made person, a round and beautiful face, but thin or pale at times; the eyes are greyish, nose and lips well modelled, and the attitude modest. This face has the influence of Mars and Mercury.
2nd FACE (6° to 10º): Indicates a person larger than the preceding face, the limbs being stronger in flesh and the complexion lighter. The influence here is of Mercury and of the fixed star Sinistra, which indicates: activity, intelligence and widowhood. 3rd FACE (11° to 15°): Medium stature, elongated face, complexion somewhat swarthy, broad forehead, grey eyes, chestnut hair, somewhat wavy.
Arms and fingers rather long. The face will have freckles but will be agreeable. 4th FACE (16° to 20º): A small and "pretty" person, slender, with a round face and light complexion, well-formed lips and nose, greyish eyes and fair hair. · 8
p. 95th FACE (21° to 25°): Very similar to the preceding, but the complexion has more colour, the aspect is haughtier and the face more beautiful.
This face contains the fixed stars Spica of the Virgin and "Arcurus", which are of the vibration of Mars, Jupiter and Venus and promise wealth, honours and fame. [Sic: the Spanish prints Arcurus for Arcturus, and farna for fama.] 6th FACE (26° to 30º): Moulds persons similar to the preceding faces, but of taller stature and much more accentuated beauty. INFLUENCES OF THE FACES OF LIBRA ON THE ASCENDANT (according to old authors).
First face: A prudent, sincere, honest person, of wisdom, a good counsellor, who expresses himself very well. Second face: A serious, prudent, discreet person, obliging and honest. Third face: An active, serious, intelligent individual, qualified for business by notable aptitudes.
Fourth face: A prudent, valiant person, a lover of study, respected for his learning. Fifth face: Like the preceding. Sixth face: An honourable, noble, magnanimous and virtuous person.
THE FACES OF LIBRA ON THE MIDHEAVEN: First: Fame as a merchant, favoured by the help or connections of elderly persons. Second: A good position as confidential secretary of personages. Third: Success through one’s own aptitudes and efforts.
Fourth: Benefits through the protection of persons of elevated position. Fifth: Like the preceding. Sixth: His merits will attract to him favours and the protection of women of position, and he will reach a situation higher than that of his origin.
A PORTRAIT OF JESUS. There has just been found, in an ancient Latin text of the Vatican Library, revised under the direction of Pope Pius XI, the oldest description of Jesus. It is a kind of police report, drawn up under the command of the proconsul Publius Lentulus, predecessor of Pontius Pilate.
That description runs thus: "He has long, fair hair, falling in curls upon his shoulders. He wears it parted in the middle. The beard is double-pointed and fairer than the hair.
The eyes are of a light blue colour and of a kindly expression, but at times they flash. He is of normal constitution and erect body. The voice is sweet.
He has never been seen to laugh, but people often see him weep. His hands are very well cared for. His name is Jesus, son of Mary. His friends also call him the Son of God". (Jesus had Libra (1° 26’) as ascendant).
p. 10Is it possible to prolong youth? Does there exist a Spiritual Alchemy capable of restoring our youth? – Causes of old age and of death. By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ (Continuation.) We saw in the preceding article the causes that contribute to the loss of the hair and the way in which we can avoid that loss and premature greying.
Let us now see the interesting complement of this subject: The colour of the hair depends on pigmentation, and this can form only on condition that a sufficient quantity of copper is available. But it is not copper itself that intervenes in the formation of the pigment.
It is a catalysing agent, which acts as a stimulant by its simple presence; now, under the influence of copper, there appears and makes itself present in the skin that mysterious substance derived from copper which is responsible for the black pigment of the hair.
Might it be for this reason that the Hindu people (very especially) draws so much attention by the abundance of its hair and the absence of greyness and baldness — which we attribute to the fact that this people makes continual use of copper utensils, having adopted for thousands of years recipients, plates, vessels, cups, etc., of this metal, so that its diet, besides being rich in copper in itself, is contaminated still further with that metal by contact with those recipients?
It would be interesting to make observations in this regard. The liver, which is rich in copper, also contains that mysterious derivative which prevents the greying of the hair. The experiments performed by clairvoyance, by certain sages, show that this mysterious substance belongs to what we might call the "filtered fraction" of the group of B vitamins — that is, Bx, which is still a mystery unknown to science.
Vitamins are like stars and comets: suddenly a new one appears on the horizon of the microscope and some studious man discovers it, as the astronomers do with their telescope. Some who have drawn a little nearer to this new element have tried to isolate it chemically pure, producing a substance called para-amino-benzoic acid.
This mysterious factor derived from copper of which we have spoken — if it could be isolated in sufficient quantity and absorbed with food, it would not only preserve the black pigmentation of the hair: even freckles would disappear as if by magic. This mysterious agent can be elaborated by yogic practices: exercises, diet, breathing and mentalisations.
But, as not all of us can practise these four things with utmost perfection, we must seek a simpler way that comes at least to supply the deficiency of the factors already enumerated, and watch over our diet. As can be seen, the thing is not easy; the premature greying of the hair is one of the first indications that a disequilibrium exists in the chemistry of the body. · 10
p. 11To procure vitamins, it suffices to watch the diet a little, varying it sufficiently, introducing each day into our meals a raw salad, a little lemon or orange juice, and fresh fruit in abundance. Since the larder of our Mother Nature has been so prodigal in its variations, colours and aromas, let us know how to take advantage of the gift she makes us, to live healthy, happy and eternally young. (To be continued).
PEACE IN THE HEART, HEALTH IN THE PHYSICAL BODY AND UNION OF SOULS. U A M Suddha Dharma Mandalam. We saw in the preceding article the Names and Functions of the 32 Great Beings (Siddhas) and how they group themselves in "Avesas", or mediators of certain influences.
We shall now occupy ourselves with the Abode of these exalted Beings, in the Himalayas, thus joining concepts with what, under other denominations, has been allowed to be known to the world about this Hierarchy and its branches of various aspects.
The word "Kalachakra" may serve as a guide — among others — to those who already know something of the spiritual government of the World and of the Era of Vibration, of Aquarius, of Agniyoga, of Shambala and of the Suddha Dharma. THE ABODE. In the Himalayas, the enormous chain of mountains that stretches to the north of India, mansion of the Vedas and other sacred writings, is situated a region known by the name of Badari Vana.
This region, which is the seat of the Hierarchy of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam, though known as a whole as Badari Vana, consists of three different parts, called: UTTARA (north) BADARI, VISALA BADARI and DAKSHINA (south) BADARI. Of these, the South, or Dakshina Badari, is composed of the temple, or Badari Nath, and the outskirts — a place situated in the Garhwal district of the United Provinces of India.
The temple of Badari Nath is situated on the summit of the same name, in the Himalayas, about 23,000 feet (some 7 thousand metres) above sea level. This is a place of · 11
p. 12pilgrimage, and it is perfectly possible for any person to reach it, independently of their spiritual advancement. In a westerly direction from Dakshina Badari, but distant from it, is situated Visala Badari, the mansion of the Siddhas, Mahatmas and other adepts.
No one obtains permission to enter that place, nor is anyone capable of tracing the way to it, unless he has advanced spiritually and is, in the opinion of the Elder Brothers, worthy of such admission. Uttara Badari is situated to the north of Dakshina Badari and is the place where the Lord Náráyana, Supreme Head of the Hierarchy, dwells in his own form.
This place is also known as Adi Badari and Yoga Badari, and entrance to this august residence is extremely difficult; only the Siddhas and those who have reached the state of Mahatma succeed in being admitted to it.
Another feature of this region of Badari Vana is the existence of an enormous lake of fresh water, known by the name of Kusumakara. [Sic: the Spanish prints Badan Vana here.] The shores of this lake are the meeting-point of many Siddhas, and on a lotus that has sprung up in the waters of the Kusumakara is upheld Sri Yogadevi, radiant and powerful, with the yogadanda, or rod of yoga, in her hand.
Seated beneath a banyan on the shores of the lake is the great expositor known as Hamsayogi. The name "Hamsa" designates the office, so that whoever holds the office is known as a Hamsayogi. Many advanced beings have been there who have held the office, and they are referred to as Prachina Hamsas, or Past Hamsas.
The duty of the Hamsa Yogi is to interpret the rules of conduct and other truths of the sacred literature to those who so desire. They carry out their work being inspired by Sri Yoga Devi, who is the Executrix of the divine will of Bhagavan Náráyana.
These three distinct parts of the Badari Vana are situated so as to form roughly an equilateral triangle, whose apex is at Visala Badari, which is situated to the west of the base line running from north to south. This region consists of five villages: Bráhmala, Sankhala, Pámala, Kalápa and Sambala.
The Ashramas of the Lord Náráyana, of Nara, Yoga Devi, Dakshinamurti and the Kumaras are situated between the two villages of Bráhmala and Sankhala, of which the northern part, or Uttara Badari, is composed. The region of Visala Badari consists of the village of Pámala.
In it dwell the thirty-two great Siddhas, and it is in this region that the celebration of the Full Moon of Vaisakh is held annually, when the hierarchs of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam invoke blessings upon the world. During those celebrations, the Lord Náráyana and others who are in Uttara Badari are present and influence one or another of the various Siddhas.
Dakshina Badari consists of the other two villages, Kalápa and Sambala; and on the border of these two villages, known by the name of Chandra Sringa, on the banks of the Ganges, is placed the statue of the Lord Náráyana, to receive the adoration of the people. This is the temple of Bradinath, situated on the summit of the same name, on the banks of the Alaknanda, one of the principal affluents of the Ganges.
p. 13secrets of all the Sastras, the initiator into the mysteries of the Dharma, the master of the rites, and the priest. These offices are discharged by persons who, through their own earnest efforts, raised themselves to become Siddhas and Mahatmas. The officials, in the order of the villages, are: Village of Bráhmala: Janaka, Hayagriva, Dhanvantra, Devalaka, Vespati, Vashista, Kamalaksha and Vyasa.
Village of Sankhala: Dami, Markandeva, Nagarjuna, Somatirtha (born of a family of workers in metals), Maithreya, Bhadraketu, Dakshi and Dravida. Village of Pámala: Bhadrasena, Rudradatta, Bharadvaja, Konkana, Pingala, Svetaketu, Jaimini, Bhujamga. Village of Kalápa: Maruta, Asvathama, Kalayasa, Nila, Syonaka (Vysia), Dharmaketu, Bhismatta and Kumbhayoni.
Village of Sambala: Devapi, Sambuka, Palayana, Bradbhanu (of Chandala lineage), Hamsa Yogi, Vamadeva, Kalpakara and Chandrasekara.
We shall synthesise what has been set forth in the last articles, begging the Disciples — and Readers in general — to consider that the beneficent influence of The Hierarchy manifests itself, then, by its very constitution, in the most diverse forms; and that every person who follows the path with the indispensable firmness, purity and devotion will, with entire certainty, be inspired by that one or those of the Exalted Beings we have named, in the modality that their personal characteristics "permit and require" (it is all one); and that thus the student of scientific, philosophical, religious, mystical or any other imaginable tendency can receive, besides the support of his spiritual development and WITHIN it, the particular inspirations which, on all the matters that constitute the total wisdom, the Gurus of all the Steps of the Sacred Hierarchy can constantly radiate.
Therefore it is said that, for those who give themselves without reserve to the providential direction, nothing is impossible, and they will go on receiving everything, provided their real and sole aim is to collaborate in this: that . All Beings be Happy. N.

p. 14Cosmic Influences and Reactions of Living Beings. Direct Mechanical Actions and mechanical vibrations of bodies. By Pitágoras S∴I∴ In order to understand well what the mechanical vibrations of bodies are, before occupying ourselves with their influence on living beings, it is necessary to give some very simple examples.
If we deflect from the vertical position a mass suspended from a thread, we see that this mass — once the force that had deflected it from its primitive position of equilibrium has ceased — returns to the vertical position, passes beyond it to reach a point of space exactly opposite that from which it had begun the movement, then returns to the vertical position, passes beyond it, and so on successively.
We obtain, as can be seen, the well-known pendular movement, which would be perpetual if the resistance of the air did not come, little by little, to attenuate the amplitude of the oscillations. Exactly the same happens if we deflect from its position of vertical equilibrium the free extremity of an elastic rod whose other extremity is fixed at any point.
We see that this rod also presents an oscillatory movement whose oscillations are much more rapid than those of the above-mentioned pendular movement — that is, much more frequent. In this case too, the vibrations would be perpetual if the resistance of the air did not damp them little by little. These two examples let us verify experimentally how oscillations, or mechanical vibrations, are produced in a gaseous medium such as air.
In a liquid medium, such as water, exactly the same happens. In effect, we all know that, if we throw a stone into water, we immediately see formed on the surface, concentrically to the point where the stone fell, a series of waves that go on receding ever further toward the periphery, and which would continue their propagation infinitely if the resistance opposed by the liquid mass did not damp them little by little until making them disappear.
This simple experiment lets us verify that the propagation of mechanical vibrations is effected, in a liquid medium, exactly as in a gaseous medium.
If, finally, we place side by side a series of coins on the surface of a table, so that they touch at their circumference, and — keeping fixed all the intermediate coins except the last — we strike a blow at one of the extremities of the row of coins, we see that the coin at the other extremity moves away, losing contact with the coin beside it.
This last experiment shows us that in a solid medium also, vibrations are transmitted exactly as in gaseous and liquid media, transmitting themselves through all the intermediate coins. The last coin, which moved away on receiving the blow, would have continued its movement if friction and the resistance of the air had not stopped it.
All these very simple and well-known experiments show us that mechanical vibrations or oscillations are transmitted through matter, whether it be in the gaseous state or in the liquid, solid and etheric states. · 14
p. 15Now, these vibrations propagate with a different velocity or frequency according to the density of the matter. The manner in which these vibrations impress our sensory organs — and by which, consequently, we have knowledge of them — differs according to the frequency of these vibrations, that is, according to the number of their oscillations per second.
Thus, for example, in the case of the rod oscillating in the air, its vibrations are exclusively visible if the number of vibrations is comprised between 16 and 32 per second, and they can be heard — that is, transformed into sounds — if the number of these vibrations increases. If they increase until they pass beyond the limit of frequencies up to which our ear can perceive them, then we shall hear nothing more.
As regards hearing, we have, then, a series of vibrations or sounds not perceptible because of their low frequency, or infra-sounds; a series of vibrations or sounds perceptible by their intermediate frequency, that is, capable of impressing the ear; and a series of vibrations or sounds not perceptible because of their high frequency, or ultrasounds.
The same may be said with reference to touch, for there may be vibrations that are neither visible nor audible and can be perceived only by touch. Our sensory organs are constructed, consequently, in such a way that some vibrations not perceptible by some of them can be perceived by others; that all can perceive them at once; and even none.
The effects of mechanical vibrations are extremely variable according to whether they act on minerals, vegetables or animals, according to their frequency, and according to many other factors that may intervene in the propagation — as for example friction, barometric pressure, the hygroscopic state of the air, the density of the various bodies that receive them, etc. Space does not permit us to extend ourselves much on the subject, and that is why we find ourselves obliged to limit our exposition to mentioning only the principal of these effects.
MINERALS. — We all know the so-called Ripple-Marks, that is, those traces which the mechanical vibrations of the waves of the sea, acting on the sand, imprint upon it, presenting themselves in a form similar to the dunes of the desert. We know also that the vibrations of a rod provoke, in the same way as a traction upon it, an elongation that can go as far as rupture.
Well known is the case of troops on the march, who must break their rhythm when walking over suspension bridges, to avoid the rupture of the same. Unhappily, ignorance of this law has caused misfortunes — for example those provoked by the ruptures of the bridges of Manchester and Angers.
The same happens with ships, each of which cannot exceed a certain speed, for they begin to vibrate as it increases, and ruptures may even be produced if a certain extreme speed is reached. Also known, finally, are those beautiful symmetrical figures that are formed with powder or sand placed on a vibrating plate.
These figures give us the demonstration that matter receives its organisation — takes form — by obeying passively the action of energy which, in its turn, is directed in a determinate direction by something unknown. It is this invisible something, then, that becomes visible in the beautiful geometric drawings, by acting on matter through energy.
p. 16And that these beautiful figures are not due to whirlwinds of air that would form in the vicinity of the vibrating plate, as Faraday believed, is demonstrated by a decisive experiment of Albert Mary, who obtained very characteristic agglomerations of coal dust suspended in a liquid contained in a glass tube to which he had imparted vibrations by rubbing it with a cloth soaked in vinegar.
In this case, as can be seen, it is not possible to attribute the formations of coal to vibrations imprinted by whirlwinds of air. Albert Mary, moreover, has obtained images extremely identical to those of cellular structures, employing a mixture of talc powder with very fine, coloured powdered carbonate of lime, disposed on a plate to which he imparted 600 vibrations per second.
Is this not another proof that matter organises itself along certain directions through the action that energy operates upon it? Is this not a proof that living forms are the visible manifestation of the spirit that has acted on matter through "life"? For, in truth, in Nature everything vibrates, everything is in movement, everything obeys a determinate rhythm, from the electronic movements of the atom to the planetary movements.
Everything lives. And this so that everything may transform itself, so that everything may evolve. The ancients knew it very well and — to cite only one of them — had not Heraclitus, the precursor of the modern physicists, said that the ether "has no other reason for being than that of giving a subject to the verb to vibrate"?
VEGETABLES. — Already the old observations of Sachs had demonstrated that each node, in a stem, was to be considered a point of null growth, and that the maximum of growth existed, in the stem, at a point equidistant from the nodes. Later George Bohn, continuing Sachs’s experiments, arrived at the same affirmations, and declared, in 1920, that every organised being is a "vibrating system".
Albert Mary, finally, attributes to the influence of mechanical vibrations on plants many variations observed in them. He wrote, in effect: "If one produces, by means of an external contact, a node at a suitably chosen point of a stem in longitudinal vibration, symmetrical nodes soon manifest themselves at various points of the stem, and convexities in the intervals.
"Vegetable stems in course of growth respond strictly to this physical law, according to the results I have observed on young cultures of Phaseolus vulgaris still bearing their cotyledons.
"In the longitudinal organisation of the plant everything proceeds from a tendency to metamerisation, by the effect of the axial vibrations; just as, in the lateral structuring, everything obeys — from the ramification to the course of the fibres — a dichotomic action of the transversal vibration imposed directly on the vegetable by the telluric whirlwinds." (Concludes in the next number) · 16
p. 17The Miracle1 There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our Philosophy. Shakespeare - Hamlet. We were in the first days of August, and of a terribly hot August.
Every good Milanese knows what summer means in the city and, if he can, chooses precisely the first week of the most dreaded month to go to the mountains or the sea, or to embark on a fine voyage to the Orient or to the North Cape. That year I was very tired, too tired, and for that reason I had arranged a fine itinerary for a holiday journey to Vienna and Budapest.
The bags were already packed and the day of departure fixed when, behold, my good friend Vittadini calls me on the telephone — a dear colleague and an important personage in Catholic circles and in the clerical party. I could never have guessed the motive of his request. He simply wanted to send me to Lourdes, in his place, as physician of the great Italian pilgrimage.
The departure was fixed for the following day. He had learned, at the last moment, that a dearly loved sister of his had suddenly fallen ill, and that was why — being unwilling on any account to abandon her — he had set about searching for a substitute, if possible an experienced practitioner, even if a surgeon. — But I was to leave for Vienna and Budapest… — No matter. To Vienna and Budapest you will go another year.
This time you go to Lourdes; you travel like a prince, you do not spend a centesimo, and you follow a magnificent itinerary: Riviera, Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, the High Pyrenees… and afterwards, following, or rather accompanying, the pilgrimage, you will see very interesting things… Two days later I was at Ventimiglia, the meeting-place of the pilgrims, where the railway train for Lourdes awaited us.
I presented myself, at the railway station, to the organising Committee and entered on the discharge of my office. At my disposal were two first-class compartments, two communicating coupés, one of which was destined for a pharmacy and for eventual dressings and emergency aid. Everything seemed to me well prepared, and abundantly.
Before the departure I should have liked to meet my pilgrims, but I soon realised that it was not possible. A throng of people awaited the departure with the evident preoccupation, at that moment, not of presenting themselves to the doctor, but of securing a good place in the train.
It was a throng of persons in a fever of agitation: priests and laymen, men, pillows, blankets, little carts, garments. [Editorial gloss: the Spanish borrows the Italian orgasmo, agitation.] "Well then," I thought, "I shall come to know my flock during the journey, since so much time had to be passed in the train and the carriages are intercommunicating".
Not all, on the other 1 This extraordinary narrative, translated from the Italian by brother Pitágoras, has been extracted from the book of the celebrated Italian surgeon Andrea Majocchi, "Vita di Chirurgo", Milano, Ed. Treves, 11ª edizione. (Note by the Editors). · 17
p. 18hand, had need of the doctor’s vigilance. There were many in perfect health. Others, on the contrary, visibly ill, moved with great difficulty, or made known, by their pale and exhausted faces, by their tired and afflicted expression, the secret of their inner debilities.
At first sight I already noted the profiles of the emaciated faces and the flushed cheeks of the tuberculous, of the sufferers from specific osteitis, of the spondylitics.
On a stretcher lay stretched a paralytic, a paraplegic with limp, dead legs; on a wheeled chair waited a dropsical man with an enormous belly; badly hidden by the blankets, a cirrhotic, probably ill of the liver, with an emaciated, almost cadaverous face and great sorrowful eyes.
Dejected, on a little bench, sat a poor man with his head bandaged and his neck wrapped in a great black scarf; he had a cancer of the cheek; the face was already destroyed in part by the tumour, so that it had become monstrous and had to be bandaged so as not to provoke repugnance; the neck, moreover, was swollen by the glandular obstructions and had also to be hidden by the scarf because of its repugnant deformity.
A little further off, seated on another little bench, a singular couple drew my attention. They were a man and a woman of very modest condition, both young, evidently husband and wife. He held her by the arm, watching her lovingly and, almost as if comforting her, spoke to her with tenderness.
Her face was tired but resigned; the eyes were very soft, cerulean… but extinguished. She was blind. Married a year before, she had been attacked, during her pregnancy, by a grave disease of the optic nerve and had lost her sight completely.
The child had been born beautiful and robust, but she had not seen him, nor would she be able to see him all her life, as she would not be able to see the others that might be born of her, because the disease had been judged incurable by all. Nevertheless, her maternal soul had not lost hope.
She having expressed the desire to go to Lourdes to implore from the Mother of Jesus the grace of being able to see her children, the husband, who was a poor railway watchman, had begun to gather a little money for the expenses of the journey; to complete the necessary sum the committee of the pilgrimage had provided; and so the two had departed and now sat on the little bench, embraced, awaiting the departure of the train.
I looked, moved, at that beautiful and youthful face, at those cerulean eyes full of sweetness, adjusted to the infinite and deprived of light… Would the Virgin perform the miracle? To me it seemed she would, because She had seen her own Child well, and could not have denied such a grace to that unfortunate being, so trusting and good. But behold — a clatter of wheels and iron.
Everyone stirs at the arrival of the train; then all hurry to climb aboard and occupy the best seats. I settle into my carriage, and am almost a little ashamed to be so privileged, with all that space and that equipment at my disposal. We depart, exactly at fifteen hours.

Comentarios sobre el Primer Grado del Martinismo
Notas histórico-cronológicas sobre la Orden Martinista.
por Pitágoras, S.I.

p. 19Mater amabilis Mater admirabili… ……………………. I listen, as if half-dreaming, to the humble chant that rises and loses itself in the atmosphere of the Casino and the Palace-Hotels.
What a contrast between the train of the suffering and that Garden of Armida, nest of worldlings, den of pleasure and impurity! [Sic: the Spanish prints contaste for contraste.] After Monaco, Nice; then Antibes and Cannes… and the train pursues its run while the sun declines in the hot, limpid August evening; and, in the first hours of the night, the strains of the sacred songs continue to rise.
Little by little I begin to feel too much alone in my empty carriage; I should like to talk with someone, and I try to look about me, listening. In the carriage before mine there is a company of religious, magnates of the pilgrimage. His Eminence the Archbishop of Genoa with all his court.
They are speaking of sacred things; discourse too elevated for me, for which reason I change course to explore in the opposite direction. Here the scene changes. I hear a warbling of feminine and childish voices in an ambience livelier than the other: I push the communicating door resolutely and present myself.
As physician of the pilgrimage I am an authority, and I find no difficulty in steering the conversation a little. There are two or three Genoese families there who have chosen to join together for a journey of devotion... and also of pleasure. Of sick people I see absolutely none.
The most distinguished lady is the wife of a well-known deputy of a Genoa constituency, a person very influential in the Catholic party. She is accompanying her two boys to Lourdes because (she tells me) her husband likes the young to travel and instruct themselves. That was a good occasion to do good and amuse oneself while spending little.
In short, a good combination for uniting utile dulci. In the same first-class carriage there was another lady, sister of the first, who was accompanying in her turn her daughter, a girl of thirteen.
To complete the amiable company there was not lacking a gracious young lady who was presented to me as the sister of a Genoa lawyer who was also on the train but, as a member of the committee, travelled with the chiefs and organisers of the pilgrimage. I do not know what graces those good people were going to invoke at Lourdes, because people more flourishing and healthy, richer and merrier, it was not easy to imagine.
Good Genoese, full of every abundance and also of the holy fear of God and, moreover, excellent companions; they shortened the hours of the journey for me and made it agreeable. Perhaps the only one of the company who had a grace to ask of the Virgin of Lourdes was the fair-haired, sentimental young lady; a grace which the greater part of young ladies implore and hope for: that of a good husband.
Shortly before midnight we reached Marseille, where we had to sleep. The following morning was devoted to a visit to the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Garde. Meanwhile I had to take note of the sick, come to know them, gather their histories more or less exactly, carry out the treatments and the eventual dressings.

p. 20sick who were entrusted to me: a sad review of tuberculous, osteitic and arthritic patients, spondylitics, chest patients, cancerous and neuropathic.
The paralytic [Sic: the Spanish prints E1, with a numeral] was still on his litter with limp, dead legs; the ascitic was pushed along on his little cart with his enormous belly covered with shawls; further back a choreic boy whom I had not seen the day before writhed in the strange movements of St. Vitus’s dance; not far off an unfortunate afflicted with shaking palsy made his hands tremble as if he could have no peace or rest.
Enormous horrors gathered in that small space on the railway platform. The handsome, ample train received them all, and carried them all at great speed toward the desired goal: toward the hope of the miracle, toward the light of salvation. This time the run [Sic: the Spanish prints e1, with a numeral] was long.
We had to eat on the train and remain in it all night. By the following morning we had reached Toulouse, then Tarbes and, at noon, finally, Lourdes. It was very wearying for the poor sick.
I had, however, to observe that no one fainted, no one complained; even the gravest were sustained by hope, by the desire to arrive, by confidence. At Nîmes the sun went down and night fell. From my place I heard the intoning of the Ave Maria and the evening prayers and, afterwards, the chant of the Litanies came again to caress my ear: Mater amabilis Mater admirabili… …………………….
Then nothing more. Silence settled in all the carriages; the train continued its run without songs, without choruses, without prayers. I lay down on my seat and tried to rest, without managing to fall asleep...
Were we, in fact, to see some miracles? Was it possible? In truth, the good priest of the pilgrimage had wisely forewarned the faithful not to expect many miracles.
It was true that the previous year miraculous cures had been verified. Some paralytics had moved and walked, some mutes had spoken, extensive sores had healed... But what matters (the holy man had said), what is indispensable, is to present oneself to the Great Mother with a trusting spirit, with absolute faith — the faith that moves mountains, that enraptures the martyrs and sustains them even before the most refined torments.
One had to believe and not doubt. If the cure was achieved, so much the better; it was the sign that the Great Mother of God had taken pity on a suffering body. But, if the body remained ill, this might be for the good of the soul.
And, in every case, to whoever implored Her with confidence, the Holy Mother would give the sweet balm of comfort and resignation... ...Thus had the holy man spoken, and his words still resounded in my ear and penetrated to the depths of my heart, because they had been said with simplicity, but with that enthusiasm which the most persuasive eloquence teaches. Convictions, moreover, that admit no reply. In matters of Faith there is no disputing. (Concludes in the next number). · 20

Curso Práctico de Astrología Judiciaria
Enseñanzas de Surya. S:: I::
Estudiaremos, ahora, las influencias del 7º Signo Zodiacal:
LIBRA, o La Balanza.
como dice el poeta Manilius: “El día y la noche son pesados en los platillos de la Balanza;

castaños, ojos azules, luminosos y hermosa tez. El carácter es noble, amable, altivo, pero
bueno.
buena y generosa, amigo fiel y delicado, otorga suerte, riqueza, numerosos viajes y feliz
casamiento.
FAZ 3ª (11° a 15°): Estatura mediana, rostro alargado, tez algo trigueña, frente
ancha, ojos grises, cabellos castaños, algo ondulados. Brazos y dedos bastante largos. El
rostro tendrá pecas pero será agradable.
FAZ 4.ª (16° a 20º): Persona menuda y “mona’, esbelta, de rostro redondo y tez
clara, labios y nariz bien formados, ojos grisáceos y cabellos rubios.

tres diferentes partes, llamadas: UTTARA (norte), BADARI, VISALA BADARI y

Dhanvantra, Devalaka, Vespati,
Vashista, Kamalaksha y Vyasa.
Aldea de Sankhala: Dami, Markandeva, Nagarjuna, Somatirtha (nacido de una

Aldea de Pámala: Bhadrasena, Rudradatta, Bharadvaja, Konkana, Pingala,
Svetaketu, Jaimini, Bhujamga.
Aldea de Kalápa: Maruta, Asvathama, Kalayasa, Nila, Syonaka (Vysia),
Dharmaketu, Bhismatta y Kumbhayoni.
Aldea de Sambala: Devapi, Sambuka, Palayana, Bradbhanu (de estirpe
Chandala), Hamsa Yogi, Vamadeva, Kalpakara y Chandrasekara.

Por Pitágoras S:: I::

— No importa. A Viena y Budapest irás otro año.
almohadas, cobertores, cochecitos, indumentos.

aquel equipo a mi disposición.

mediodía, finalmente, a Lourdes.

Observancia.
