p. 4Reforms in the Martinist Order. By JEHEL. Del∴ Gen∴ of the O∴ K∴ R∴ C∴ and President of the Grand Council of the Martinist Order.
Initiated in 1922 into the Martinist Order, having assumed its visible direction in 1936 and reorganised its administrative and ritual structure in 1939, I have thus had opportunity, in that long period of time, to observe the advantages and eventual inconveniences that the marvellous organisation given to our beloved and venerable Martinist Order by PAPUS in Europe could present as regards its adaptation to the American — and especially the Latin American — environment.
That is why, in accord with my Brothers of the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose Cross and of the Grand Council of the Martinist Order, I have resolved, after all that period of observation in the different countries where Martinism studies, prays and works silently, to proceed to the reforms which, with the date of 9 June (the date of greatest moral force of each year), will be put in force for all the Corporations and Free Members of our beloved Order on this Continent.
As, on the other hand, Martinism hides from profane gazes only that which has too sacred a character to be published, or that which each one must find alone — by study, meditation, and the reiterated practice of acts in harmony with the doctrine — I have thought it convenient that "LA INICIACIÓN" should bring to the public's knowledge the general spirit that has presided over these reforms, every Reader of the review thus being in a position to form a judgment and eventually to prevent his mind from being preoccupied by erroneous concepts which interested persons might perchance formulate, distorting, unconsciously or on purpose, the real orientation of the Martinist Order.
PAPUS SAID: "Martinism is a free Christian Chivalry, dedicated to the study of Christian esotericism, to the practice of charity in all its modalities, and it thus constitutes the door of entry to almost all the more elevated Fraternities". That fundamental concept remains unaltered.
Martinism — Christian by its doctrine, Christian by the composition of its collectivity, whose enormous majority is evidently constituted by persons of white race and of Christian spiritual or religious formation — considers and will always consider the Christian revelation as the most fitted to · 4
p. 5orient the present white civilisation, being the one that came after all the religious and philosophical forms of the preceding races; but the Martinist, as a true Initiate or Initiand, must know how to find in each of the truths presented by the Instructors prior to the Christ the marvel of his word — the Eternal and Immutable Truth, clothed in other languages and presented with external modalities proper to the time and place in which they were given to Humanity.
Thus, then, the Martinist can never be a sectarian, in religious matters or in philosophical ones, and he must be able to honour with devotion, and practise with equal reverence, all the truths that Buddhism, Taoism or any other prior revelation has communicated to the human spirit; for, if they are truths, they are permanent, and being so, they are in essence contained in Christianity itself.
For this reason, too, Martinism definitively refuses to place woman in a situation of inferiority, and recognises in her the most absolute equality of spiritual — that is to say, initiatic — possibility with man, of whom she is the indispensable physiological, moral and social complement.
In the reforms referred to, each and every trace of resemblance between Martinism and the so-called "masonic" rites has been eliminated, it being judged that the time of secret societies has passed, and that the working modality of the masons has nothing to do with the work of the initiatic orders, which are profoundly religious in their doctrine, in their convictions and in their practices — since meditation and prayer are fundamental in the way Martinism teaches.
Another characteristic of the teaching and working modality now emphasised in the orientation of Martinism is the ever briefer synthesis given to the theoretical part of the studies, and the increase of data provided to the Disciples on the practical part — destined thus to take an ever ampler increase, and to distinguish the Martinist ever more sharply from the "seekers of information for discussing theories or criticising authors".
Suppressed, then, the pompous and useless titles with which the members of some rites adorn themselves — and which up to a certain epoch the love of traditional forms had caused to be conserved in part in Martinism; suppressed also the complex formalities of the administrative and ritual aspect; eliminated all the typically European working or presentational modalities, often characteristic merely of certain epochs or rites — Martinism now tends to take on a formal, administrative and teaching aspect ever more human, ever more essential, ever more universal, giving importance only to what really is fundamental and immutable, and setting aside from its activities the purely decorative details.
Another particularity worthy of record is the fact that Martinism now receives a characteristic that makes more visible the close union among all the Initiatic Centres of East and West — thus giving a formal and definitive denial to all those who, in defence of a sectarian interest or a unilateral conviction, closed their understanding or their affection to theories, masters and initiatic schools of the East, which are of elevated interest for the student, and whose penetration by the most varied channels has demonstrated by facts that the humanity of this Continent had a clear appetite to receive them.
The epoch of Aquarius, which approaches — less insensibly than might appear to those who, from their reading-room, follow intellectually enraptured in admiration of "what others said" — needs the initiatic fraternities to be ever more active, more alive, more fecund. And fecundity, life and any modality of activity manifest themselves by ample, free movements, related to everything that, · 5
p. 6from any point of the Universe, relates itself to them or influences them in any manner. Therefore Martinism takes a working norm destined to create Beings of Will and of Realisation, capable of effectively doing something for themselves and for others, even without a collective environment, without books, without temples, without rituals.
All that is convenient; but our brothers must possess, little by little, in themselves, the stimulus that collective life gives, the knowledge that the book can give, and the faith, devotion and spiritual force of the true temples. To arrive at that, there is a single road: to prepare oneself actively, practically.
It is to achieve it that the study programmes are now modified, including in each degree practical steps of realisation, beginning with corporeal preparation — so that the Martinists may have, as point of support for their work of moral, intellectual and spiritual betterment, as well as of active service in collective life, a health and a corporeal irradiation harmonious with the end in view.
It was said, in the initial part of this article, that today, as in the time of PAPUS, Martinism constituted the door of access to several more elevated initiatic Fraternities. [Sic: the original prints "Se decir".] I shall cite some: The Kabbalistic Order of the Rose Cross, Gnosticism, the Ramana Ashrama, Suddha Dharma Mandalam, Maha Boddhi Sanga and the H. A. B.
M. (Asiatic Brothers of the Brilliant Mystery).
But is it possible that it should pass through the mind of any "reader of initiation texts" that he can be a magnetiser, alchemist, hermetist, practitioner of elevated states of meditation or ecstasy — he whose body is an ambulant pathological museum and whose mind is a theatre of perpetual doubts, of interminable struggles, and not seldom the cradle of thoughts of wrath or analogous sentiments that profoundly disturb his aura, his total vibration?
Martinism desires to tear its adepts from the arms of "Maya" — that is, from the perpetual illusion in which the majority of mortals live. And the first and greatest of the illusions to eliminate is this: "What are we now?
To give the Martinist tools to analyse himself and to transmute what he finds defective — but to do it in a practical and clear manner — is the fundamental point of the new orientation, which will be pursued with all the affection of which those are capable who have dedicated their life and their efforts, however insignificant, to the Work, with the Auspices of those Venerable Figures Whom we call Masters — because they really are such, and because their Goodness, their Knowledge and their Love wait, serenely but continually, for us to prepare ourselves more and better, practically, so as to be in a condition to do something as Their helpers, and not to content ourselves with "reading and discussing" while They labour actively and lovingly.
p. 7Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism — Androgony — Teachings of Jehel, S∴I∴ — All the preceding articles have placed in evidence — whether under the symbolic aspect or directly in the androgonic teaching — what a human being really is, how it functions and what its true finality is.
When we completely finish the androgonic series — at least in what corresponds to the studies of the first degree — we shall publish a table that will be the complete summary of the human constitution, detailed in all its aspects. Today we wish to fill an evident necessity.
We have counselled, whether in these articles or in those Brother Asuri Kapila publishes, rational alimentation as the basis not only of the conservation of physical health but as the indispensable foundation of mystical realisation — since "mens sana in corpore sano", etc. [Sic: the original prints "mente sana".] So that Disciples and Readers need not trouble themselves searching diverse sources for the basis of such rational alimentation, we have resolved to publish the three lists that permit eating harmoniously, whether in the vegetarian modality or in the carnivorous.
FOUNDATION OF THE SYSTEM OF RATIONAL ALIMENTATION — It consists in never mixing the foods of list ONE with those of list THREE — that is, not eating on the same occasion acid things with sweet foods or starches. The foods of list TWO, being intermediary, can be absorbed indifferently, alone or with either of the other two lists: ONE and THREE.
One should try to eliminate from the diet the substances called "refined": white sugar, white (non-integral) flour, oils, salt and strong condiments. Vinegar should be substituted by lemon juice. In each list the foods are in alphabetical order, the first of each letter being written in larger type to facilitate the search.
p. 8LIST NUMBER ONE — Foods that require an alkaline medium, initial and terminal, for their correct digestion: ARTICHOKES. [Sic: the original prints "ALCAHUCILES" for "alcauciles".] Whole rice. Oats. BANANAS.
Sweet potato. Aubergine. Boniato (sweet potato).
PUMPKINS. Chestnuts. Barley.

WHOLEMEAL BREAD. Banana raisins. Grape raisins.
Pears (these with the skin or adhering film). Potatoes. Vegetable RAVIOLI.
Radicchio. Beetroot. SALSIFY.
Watermelon (must be eaten alone). Wholemeal NOODLES. Wheat.
Ripe GRAPES. SQUASHES. Small squashes.
Carrot. LIST NUMBER TWO — Foods that digest well in any medium of acidity or alkalinity — that is to say, that can be consumed alone as well as immediately accompanying other foods of list number One or of list number Three: CHARD. Cod-liver oil (better unrefined).
Black and green olives. Celery. Peppers.
Ground hot pepper. Garlic. Saffron.
Olive oil (unrefined). Basil. WATERCRESS.

Chicory greens. Cabbage. Rosemary.
Fennel SEEDS. Sage. THYME.
LIST NUMBER THREE. Foods that require an acid initial medium and an alkaline terminal medium for their correct digestion: FOWL. Peas.
Almonds. Hazelnuts. Tuna.
Anchovies. COD. [Sic: the original prints "CABALAO" for "bacalao".] MEATS (beef, veal, lamb, pork, fowl, fish, cartilage, shellfish and derived products). Horse mackerel.
Acid PEACHES. SPINACH. ACID AND SUB-ACID FRUITS (lemon, lime, grapefruit or pomelo, shaddocks, quinces, oranges, mandarins, sour and bitter oranges, acid peaches and nectarines, medlars, strawberries, apples).
NUTS (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and peanuts). GRAPEFRUIT or pomelo. Chickpeas.
BROAD BEANS. Mushrooms. Eggs (white and yolk of fresh eggs).
Liver of beef, lamb, pork, roasted (salt it when browning it). [Sic: the original prints "al redorarlo".] HAM (raw or cooked). KEFIR. MILK.
Lentils. Lemon. MANDARINS.
Peanuts. Apples. Fresh molluscs.
ORANGES. Walnuts. Dried peach halves.
FISH. Beans. FRESH CHEESE.
Semi-hard grating cheese. Cream cheeses of the Holland and Gruyère types. TOMATOES.
Acid GRAPES. Honey VINEGAR. Vinegar of good wine. YOGHURT (or Yoka).
p. 9The indications of this list permit conserving an agreeable state of health, avoiding flatulence and unnecessary fatness — provided one does not abuse the foods of list ONE [Sic: the original prints "LINO".], which are those that "fatten" and cure all stomach and intestinal discomforts, provided they are not of much gravity.
Therefore, if certain persons did not obtain an appreciable improvement with this alimentation, they must then, evidently, have themselves examined by a physician, who will determine the cause of such an anomaly, prescribing the adequate treatment.
As general counsels to conserve health, or to remedy a quantity of discomforts from which everyone more or less suffers, it suffices, in general, to observe these indications: In the morning, fasting, take daily the juice of one lemon, eating nothing more until an hour and a half has passed. Those who find it more agreeable may mix the lemon juice with two or three oranges. If possible, fast one day a week.
Lunch abundantly, without excess, and dine lightly, never late or just before going to bed. The ideal would be not to dine, but to take in the late afternoon fruit, or tea with something light.
As there is a great quantity of persons who suffer from the liver or the kidneys, it is necessary to indicate which foods are inconvenient or advisable for those persons, who will then only have to strike from the lists the foods that do not suit them and underline the recommended ones, thus obtaining, from the general list published above, their own suitable regime.
We say "general" because there are individual factors, normal or pathological, that only the person concerned or the physician can determine, after observation. FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM THE KIDNEY.
NOT SUITABLE FOR THEM: salt, and the foods that contain it, such as: olives, anchovies, sardines, cod, cold cuts, etc. VERY BAD FOR THEM: excitants and irritants, such as: pepper, mustard, vinegar, alcohol (in any form), coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco.
ALSO UNSUITABLE FOR THEM: foods rich in albumins and that leave acid residues (uric acid, oxalic, etc.), such as meats, fowl, fish [Sic: the original prints "pecados" (sins) for "pescados".], liver, preserves, sausages, shellfish, cheeses; and among the vegetables: chard, cabbages, and asparagus.
THEY CAN TOLERATE: Eggs in moderate quantity, raw or soft-boiled; very fresh cheese with little or no salt; dry legumes; and lemon in very moderate quantity. RECOMMENDED: all fresh and dried fruits, such as: walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, dates, pulpy black plums and raisins. The banana is very good — a cure of it can be made — pears, apples, grapes and figs.
p. 10They can make a true cure of raw milk and fruits, alternating the milk with unsweetened Yogurt. Wholemeal black bread with butter, potatoes boiled in their skins, lettuce and grated carrot, etc. — COMBINING THE FOODS ACCORDING TO THE PUBLISHED LISTS. FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM THE LIVER — Reduce salt greatly; procure good intestinal functioning, but without purgatives or laxatives; eat slowly, calmly; chew well to avoid slow digestions.
AVOID TOTALLY: alcohol, tea, coffee, chocolate, spicy things, sweets and confectionery; sauces, fried things, olives, and every preserve and fat. EAT MEAT only at midday, and only beef, veal, and roasted. No fish, molluscs, cold cuts, brains, nor liver and derivatives.
Avoid eggs, cheeses and dry legumes. RECOMMENDED: unsweetened Yogurt, cereals in general, all vegetables raw or boiled: potatoes, asparagus, radishes, green beans, spinach. Lettuce salad with raw grated carrot, potatoes boiled in their skins, accompanied with wholemeal bread.
Very good is the apple, but well chewed; it can be eaten grated and with the skin. THE BASIS of their alimentation should be raw and well-combined fruit. No fruits boiled with sugar, compotes or sweets.
MUCH GRAPE, without skin or seed. PENNYROYAL — For those who suffer from the liver it is advisable to take after meals a cup of this infusion, made in the following manner: A teacup is heated, six or seven pennyroyal leaves are put in it, and then thoroughly boiling water is poured on. It is left covered a quarter of an hour and then drunk nice and warm.
It can also be taken at any hour thought necessary, but ALWAYS WITHOUT SUGAR. We hope that with these indications our Students and Readers, as well as their families, may obtain some result, for we have already tried these indications with success, personally and in those around us. HEALTH, PEACE AND UNION. (To be continued). 10
p. 11Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ — Now that we have seen, in previous articles, what the seven "traditional" planets, and Uranus and Neptune, must represent for the astrologer and the occultist, we shall approach the study of the Zodiacal Signs, in their general meaning, beginning with ARIES or the Ram. Aries symbolises sacrifice.
It is the symbol of our instincts. Persons born under this sign are usually intelligent, full of ardour, of aggressive spirit, energetic and imperious will. They are generally persons of action — indomitable, insubmissive, despotic, irritable and argumentative.
It gives excellent warriors. J. Burgoyne, the Rosicrucian author of "The Light of Egypt" [Sic: the original prints "J.
J. Bugoyne".], also indicates to us that: "Aries, under the symbolic aspect, is sacrifice.
Cattle and sheep give birth to their young in the part of the year in which the Sun occupies this Sign. [Sic: the original prints "de nacimiento" for "dan nacimiento".] Besides sacrifice, Aries symbolises also the spring — the beginning of a new year, the moment in which life, light and love will be given to the children of the earth, as a consequence of the victory that the Sun once more achieves over the empire of winter and of death.
The symbol of the lamb immolated upon the equinoctial cross is another modality of representation of Aries. Kabbalistically, Aries represents the head and brain of the Grand Man of the Cosmos. It is the thinking and acting principle in nature, called at times instinct, and at others intelligence.
On the esoteric planisphere this sign is occupied by Benjamin, of whom Jacob — in the blessing of his twelve sons — says: "Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil". Among all the animals, the wolf is consecrated to the planet Mars, and the sign of Aries is under the special control of this ardent planet.
Mars is the most ardent of all the planets, and Aries is the first constellation of the Fire triplicity. Such a correspondence is significant. The Hebrews concealed this relation of the planetary nature of Mars by combining the wolf and the lamb.
The phrase "The wolf is the clothing of the lamb" reveals to us the evil action of Mars when malefically placed in his own sign Aries. The characteristic stone of this sign is the amethyst, and those born with Aries in the Ascendant of their horoscope will have in it a powerful magnetic talisman. Aries is the first and most elevated emanation of the Fire triplicity and is the constellation of the planet Mars.
On the intellectual plane, Aries signifies the Martian spirit of destructiveness and aggression. It governs the head, and the Apocalypse of Saint John says: "Out of his mouth went a two-edged sword". It is the active will guided by the executive forces of the brain, and those who have this influence never let themselves be guided by third parties.
On the physical plane, Aries generally gives a thin but robust body, of medium stature, elongated face, abundant eyebrows, a rather long neck, ample chest, complexion rather sallow or brownish; a valorous, ambitious, intrepid and · 11
p. 12despotic character, a fiery and passionate tendency. In a general way it grants a very quarrelsome, irritable and argumentative personality. Its illnesses are those of the head, smallpox, scarlet fever and fevers.
Among plants it rules broom, holly, the thistle, burdock, fern, garlic, hemp, mustard, the nettle, onion, poppy, radish and rhubarb. Of stones and gems, besides the amethyst, there correspond to Aries pyrite, sulphur, ochre and all the common red stones.
THE DECANATES OF ARIES ON THE ASCENDANT (according to Julevno) — Aries gives, in general, a medium stature — especially in the first ten degrees — a thin and nervous body, with thick bones and strong limbs. Penetrating sight, dark complexion, dark or reddish hair. There is almost always a mark on the face.
The character is choleric, violent, combative, ambitious, intrepid, ingenious. A lively and brilliant intelligence. This sign governs the head and the face and has Mars for its lord.
The first decanate (first ten degrees) is governed by Mars and gives an aggressive spirit, fit for politics and public affairs. It threatens accident to the head or face, causes important changes in life, disposes to the career of arms and to distant colonisations.
The second decanate (degrees 11 to 20) has, besides the general influence of Mars over the whole sign, the Sun as regent of the decanate. [Sic: the original prints "grados l i a 20".] It gives ambition [Sic: the original prints "Da Albión".], taste for the arts, a haughty and generous nature, success in posts of administrative or military position, and grants favours from powerful people. The third decanate belongs to Venus.
It grants love of pleasures, strong passions, an ardent but good nature, taste for the arts and letters — but fortune is not very happy.
IF WE CONSIDER THE "FACES" of ARIES (divisions of 5°) we shall see that, according to classical opinions collected by Dr. Salmon, they signify: 1st FACE (0° to 5°) [Sic: the original prints "FAZ la" for "1a".]: A small person with broad forehead, prominent cheekbones, narrow chin, aquiline nose, black or reddish hair, little waved, black eyes and dark complexion. In degree V is the fixed star "Tail of the Whale", of evil influence.
If Saturn, Jupiter or Mercury are found in this face, the person will be developed in lively and notable intelligence. 2nd FACE (6° to 10°): A small but strong person, of firm and severe aspect, dark complexion with a mark or spot above the nose. 3rd FACE (11° to 15°): Medium stature, somewhat thin, long face, dark hair, greyish and sunken eyes, an attractive face, for Jupiter and Venus influence this face.
The fixed star "Head of Andromeda" is found here and announces gains, wealth, victory over enemies and a taste for luxury. The face is oval, owing to the influence of Venus. 4th FACE (16° to 20°): Medium stature, well proportioned, "pretty", of fresh complexion, haughty aspect, chestnut hair and dark or greyish eyes.
This face is of the vibration of Jupiter and Venus and is considered beneficent. If Mars is there it darkens the complexion and gives it colour; the Moon makes the character mobile; the Sun broadens the forehead; Mercury lengthens the face, gives freckles and waves the hair; Uranus blackens the hair. 12
p. 135th FACE (21° to 25°) [Sic: the original prints "2U" for "21".]: Persons of medium stature or more, black hair, dark and elongated face, badly aligned teeth that will fall early, crooked legs, and the whole body tends to lean forward. The influence of Saturn on this face makes the character stubborn, reserved.
Mars here gives fieriness and violence; Mars in Aries always gives sunken eyes and a combative temper; Saturn in Aries gives a strong, deep voice and a developed forehead. 6th FACE (26° to 30°): Stature rather tall — unless the Moon were present there — austere presence, thick eyebrows, black and wavy hair, large mouth, broad nose, a solid and well-poised body; the face, of masculine expression, is frequently marked by a scar.
If Uranus is present, it makes the face longer, the teeth strong and badly placed. This face is under the influence of Mars and Saturn and contains the "Girdle of Andromeda", a fixed star of the nature of Venus, very favourable for navigators, chemists and breeders.
Jupiter present gives a complexion with warts or strong colours; Mercury hollows the cheeks, makes the complexion lighter, as also the eyebrows and lashes, and somewhat flattens the nose. THE INFLUENCES OF ARIES ON THE ASCENDANT (according to old authors) — First face: A bold, valiant, ingenious character, easy speech. Second: The same, but with success in the first half of life and reverses afterwards.
Third: Skilful counsellors and politicians, a judicious and prudent spirit. Fourth: An affable, sympathetic character, triumphing in many professions. Fifth: A false, foolish and argumentative person.
Sixth: Valour, self-confidence, luck in everything in general. FACES OF ARIES ON THE MIDHEAVEN — First: Soldiers, surgeons, physicians, butchers, metal-workers. Second: Luck that changes much, alternately.
Third: Success in general. It indicates goldsmiths and day-labourers. Fourth: Elevation, honours, public posts, military or civil.
Fifth: A vulgar, obscure life and corresponding professions. Sixth: Elevation as a military man, but danger of death in combat. 13
p. 14Fig. 20 — MAHA-ASANA: The figure shows us clearly the two positions of this important posture. 14
p. 15Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continuation) — By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ — MAHA-ASANA — This Asana (from the Sanskrit Maha-Great and Asana-Posture) means etymologically Great Asana, and is also named "bridge posture". TECHNIQUE. It is performed as follows: 1) Kneel with the trunk well erect, the arms naturally extended at the sides of the body, and looking forward.
2) Place the fists, with the fingers extended, at the sides of the neck. 3) Exhale, make a small interval, then inhale slowly and deeply, retain the breath for an instant, and bend the trunk [Sic: the original prints "el trono" (the throne).] slowly to the left as far as possible, until the elbow touches the ground. 4) Return to the original position slowly and exhale likewise slowly.
5) Repeat the same exercise bending the trunk to the right side. Fig. 20 shows this exercise clearly.
When, after several exercises, one has succeeded in executing this asana with ease, five flexions of the trunk should be performed in rapid succession during the whole time of one inhalation, and then the air expelled pronouncing a long and sonorous OM. There exists a variant of this asana which consists in placing the fists at the sides of the neck no longer with the fingers extended but closed.
With this variant the electric circuit is closed, which permits the body to receive all the terrestrial prana, which will go to charge the solar plexus and all the other magnetic centres of the body. BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THE MAHA-ASANA. — Practising this asana one to three times, the following benefits can be obtained: 1) Toning and development of the muscles of the thighs, legs, trunk, abdomen, arms and neck. 15
p. 162) Greater extension in the play of the articulations of the knees, the intervertebral joints, elbows and wrists. 3) Invigoration of the organs of procreation. 4) Elimination of the fat of the legs, thighs, abdomen and thorax, and especially that which, in women, accumulates on the hips.
5) Toning of the nervous system in general and of the spinal cord in particular. 6) Toning of the ovaries and regularisation of menstruation. 7) Increase of intestinal tonicity and disappearance of constipation. (To be continued) — PEACE TO ALL BEINGS — U A M — Is it possible to prolong youth?
Does a Spiritual Alchemy exist capable of restoring our youth? - Causes of old age and of death.
By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ (Continuation) — We have already said that if our organism needs mineral salts — such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, etc. — and various vitamins so that the normal and harmonious development of life may take place, those elements can never be supplied by synthetic, re-cooked or artificially altered foods — that is, anti-natural foods.
All those toxic foods, once ingested, give origin — owing to the chemical modifications produced by the process of digestion — to different, strange by-products, prejudicial to the normal development of cellular metabolism, thus becoming true poisons which, acting constantly by their presence and by their electro-magnetic influence, give origin to those vibratory disequilibria we call illnesses.
Must we then marvel if, eating foods in quality and quantity disharmonious with the true necessities of our organism, we come to · 16
p. 17fall ill? Must we marvel if — the illness not presenting itself in an evident and acute form with fever, pains, etc. — we go dragging out our existence tormented with a thousand discomforts, aged and already useless physically, morally and spiritually?
THE ELECTRICITY OF THE HUMAN BODY. — We all know electricity, if not in its ultimate essence, at least in its infinite applications; but very few know that the human body, too, is an accumulator and transformer of electro-magnetic energy.
All the cells — or better said, all the material molecules that constitute in their ensemble the cellular protoplasm — as well as all the assimilated substances carried by the blood to those cells to repair the losses occasioned by the cellular functions, are charged with electricity.
Biological Chemistry has already demonstrated experimentally the existence of positive or negative ions that play a preponderant — not to say essential — role in the normal functions of cellular life, as for example in the osmotic manifestations through semipermeable membranes (intercellular liquid–ectoplasm, or cellular membrane–protoplasm), the energetic currents existing between protoplasm and cellular nucleus, the secretion of various substances, etc. Now, if these ions — through different causes of which we cannot speak here — discharge themselves, that is, lose their positive or negative energy, they become by that single fact useless, unserviceable for contributing to the functions of cellular life, and are consequently eliminated from the vital process.
Biological Chemistry has known for quite some time those vital manifestations due to the positive or negative ions, which it has named "tropisms".
There exist thus phototropisms, thermotropisms, electrotropisms, etc., negative and positive, according to whether there is a tendency towards the positive or negative pole — cathodic or anodic — of light, heat, electricity, etc. All the vital processes that manifest themselves as functional activity of the organs are, then, determined by the action of these positive or negative charges of the ions.
It is thus that the muscle can contract, the nerve give passage to the nervous fluid, the gland secrete [Sic: the original prints "agregar".] diverse substances such as saliva, bile, pancreatic juice, hormones, etc., the heart contract rhythmically to assure the normal hydraulic distribution of the blood, the lungs dilate and contract to assure the gaseous interchanges or haematosis, etc. Man manifests, in synthesis, that constant vital work in all his organs — work that can express itself from the manifestations of vegetative life up to the most sublime conceptions of thought, intelligence and imagination — in his "aura".
And it is the electromagnetic nature of the "aura" that permits knowing, by adequate means, the vibratory temperament of each man. We can in general say that all men can manifest that vibratory temperament in three modalities: Neutral, Electric and Magnetic.
The neutral is extremely rare, for it is the manifestation of a complete dynamic equilibrium between all the vital functions of vegetative and relational nature on one side, and the animic or emotive and mental or spiritual functions on the other. That neutral temperament is the one already attained by the "adepts" or masters, and the one all of us strive · 17
p. 18continually to attain. Much more frequent are the other two temperaments: electric and magnetic. The electric temperament is the temperament of positive, volitional, energetic, active, projecting men — such as men of action, hypnotisers, etc.; in a word, those who influence all others by action, word, gesture, and mental and spiritual activity.
The magnetic temperament, on the contrary, is the temperament of negative, receptive, passive men — such as men who have a propensity to receive rather than to give, the hypnotisable, the mystics, the saints, artists in general, sensitives and, in its extreme form, mediums.
Clearly there exist no men of exclusively magnetic temperament, for all are electric and magnetic at once; the difference between the first and the second lies only in the preponderance of one temperament over the other. Now, alimentation cannot be identical for all, since each man needs the one most appropriate to him.
As there are prevalently electric organs — such as the glands in general, the brain, the medulla oblongata, the spinal cord, the lungs, kidneys, heart, etc. — as there are prevalently magnetic organs — such as the liver, the stomach, the bones, the intestines and the "solar plexus" itself, which is a powerful magnetic centre — so also it is necessary to supply the organism with prevalently electric foods, such as garden vegetables and the other foods rich in mineral salts; prevalently magnetic foods, such as fruits, sweets and the other foods rich in carbohydrates, like sugar, honey, etc.; and almost neutral foods, like cereals, potatoes, manioc, tapioca, walnuts, almonds, pine-nuts, hazelnuts, beans, lentils, dry broad beans, chickpeas, bananas, chestnuts, etc. This brief exposition has permitted us to appreciate the enormous importance and the primordial role foods play in the maintenance of our Health, physical as well as moral and mental.
Studying ourselves, knowing our true modality of being, we shall be able — applying wisely and constantly the principles and knowledge set forth above — to succeed not only in recovering lost health [Sic: the original prints "no salvamente".], but also in maintaining it constantly in our integral being, and thus, thanks to it, be always young and joyful. A cordial telegraphic message from Chile came to bring us the material expression of the affection of the Santiago Section, and many Disciples felt ties with there and with the Sacred Ceremonial of the East. Special details will in due course be sent privately to the various Ashramas.
There has thus begun a period of twelve months in which it is hoped to SERVE BETTER, and which the Disciples inaugurated with beautiful devotion in the Ceremonial of 4 in the morning, attended by almost all, repeating it at night. 19
p. 20NECESSITY OF ORGANISATION IN THE RELIGIONS. By T. M.
Janardanam (Translated from "The Suddha Dharma", November-December 1936) — This question is now of great actuality, and many are the violent criticisms directed against what is called "Organised Religion".
The persons who do such a thing can be divided, for the purpose, into two classes: first, those who repudiate not only the method of organisation in religion but Religion itself [Sic: the original prints "que sólo reniegan".]; second, those who only go against the forms of organisation.
Of these two classes of critics, the questions raised by the first are fundamental, for they attack even the very concept that human life, and the other forms of life, follow a trajectory of eternal evolution; in short, they attack all those ideas that form the codes of morals and ethics upon which human society rests.
These questions have already been raised again and again from very remote times, and as long as there are human beings, and also a world in which they can exist, these questions will obsess a certain class of individuals.
With these persons it is no longer properly a matter of incapacity to understand the simple truths that come into anyone's view; rather they seek to shun the hindrance that such understanding and recognition would signify to their egoism.
And clearly so, since this would require them to curb their libertine methods of physical pleasures, their deceits, hypocrisies and all the rest they practise in the name of liberty — a liberty repulsive to any decent intelligence, not to speak of religion. We are dealing, in this case, with "extroverted" beings, according to an expression of psychology.
It is impossible to bring them into a reasoned analysis, for this would oblige them to restrict what they understand by "liberty". Beings of this class we must leave severely to one side. But though we do so, they will always be a burden on us, since their existence feeds on human destruction, just as the worm lives in filth and dies if we take it out of the filth.
Unfortunately, however, it is also a necessary situation — "Sarvam Avasyakam" — for human evolution. This is the price we must pay for having been born subject to limitations. As regards the other class of critics, there is a certain honesty and sincerity in them when they doubt that it is necessary to have an organisation attached to Religion.
In these persons there is only a mistaken idea of what Religion is, for they believe this word corresponds to an individual process that permits the individual to discover God, and that an organisation is therefore not justified, since it ostensibly serves little for this object. It is entirely true that no organisation, whatever its religious denomination, can help us discover God.
This discovery the individual has to make by himself alone, for himself and within his own intimate being. The investigation made in this sense constitutes a subjective experimentation, which one effects within oneself, alone and far from all contact. This is called the spiritual search, and its purpose is to · 20
p. 21come to find oneself face to face with the Spirit or Divinity that each one carries enclosed in the sanctuary of his own heart. This evidently requires a system of life that possesses a definite characteristic [Sic: the original prints "cu característica".], that pursues a single purpose and is lived in accordance with it.
Precisely to generate this idea, this faith; to make the intellect comprehend and reason understand; to underline the moral, social and ethical necessities of life; and, in short, to educate men in the sense of avoiding conflicts and living a harmonious existence so that they may better ascend the ladder of evolution whose steps every being must forcibly climb — all this constitutes the integral finality of the Religions.
Such a finality evidently requires an organisation entrusted to fit beings, and directed moreover by persons who have had at least some experience of the invisible — and not, as really happens, by those who have only mastered this idea intellectually. For it is necessary that these persons be able to indicate the path truly and practically — a thing not possible for those who have grasped the matter by the sole means of their intellect.
Therefore Religion is a complex whole of laws and rules established for the well-being of society as a whole, and every individual who forms part of it must fulfil them in his daily life; at the same time religion is a way of realising, here and now, the divinity diffused everywhere — though this fact has until now been grasped only by our intellectual faculty.
In other times the King, being the Governor of his people, was also its religious Head, in the sense that he established the laws for the good of each one. But all the King possessed for the discharge of his high office was an intellectual comprehension of God.
When he wished to know for himself that God really is everywhere, his search became spiritual, and he consequently had to release himself from the responsibilities the monarchy imposed on him as religious head. The law he then had to apply rigorously to himself, and this morally required him to reject functions that, properly, another should discharge.
A law which the individual thus applies for himself, by himself and within himself becomes what is called a subjective investigation, or spiritual search; and when it is applied to the social whole, it becomes then a matter of material importance capable of moulding the cortical growth of human society. [Sic: the original prints "Lina ley".] Nevertheless, Kings like Janaka and others mentioned in the GITA have reigned discharging both functions.
From all the foregoing it follows that "Religion" is not only a question proper to the individual but also to society, and it can be fulfilled efficiently only by means of an organisation. So that religion is spiritual and material at once — the two obligatory aspects so necessary to life, because life has not only an objective aspect but also a subjective one.
Life exists only under organisation; spirituality perceives it subjectively, while materialism tends to mould it in its objective aspect so that we may see it thus. But religion, which is both things, must necessarily function in such a manner as to make the whole activity of life perform itself integrally — and this is organised. Life is at one and the same time a subjective and an objective process.
The chaotic and complex existence that creates the problems is the exclusive monopoly of human beings. This is due to the lack of organisation, for no such case exists in nature, in which we can observe how a perfect order reigns. It is so in nature because she is perfectly organised and directed by a Supreme Intelligence. 21
p. 22The purpose religion pursues is to make the human mind understand the existence of such organisation in nature, so that humanity may live in consonance with that organisation.
In other words, religion tends to create an organisation with its laws to restrain man's too accelerated advance, making him march in unison with the rhythm of nature — since man does not realise that in his inmost self he is an organised being, requiring frequent revisions and readjustments. The lack of this knowledge is what precipitates the rapidity of movements which, in their turn, end in chaos.
This chaos can only be prevented by organised efforts, and this only religion can achieve completely — because all social or economic questions are simply religious, in the sense that religion tends towards the full material well-being of the whole of society, this well-being being based on the existence of an immanent and supreme power that directs each individual creature.
And to prove this assertion man must make an act of recollection within himself. Religion does not limit itself to a simple enunciation of laws about human relations, whose actions require an organisation. Religion teaches us that such an organisation exists within the individual, constituting the different planes of consciousness.
This fact is proved by subjective experimentation. The experimentation practised by the individual within himself reveals to him not only the system that functions in the inner being of man, but also the intelligence that directs the whole external system.
Thus, then, religion is at once subjective and objective, spiritual and material, and its mission consists in organising human society and educating the individual within society — and this it does by enunciating determined principles. We thus see that, whatever the religion, the principles are the same.
In some of them the principles are emphasised only with respect to the subjective relations of man to man, while in other religions the relations of man with what he calls God are emphasised as well.
The too personal concept these religions give us of God — without there being, by means of personal experimentation, an exact knowledge of what such an idea of God really signifies — has as its result the weakening of adhesion to the principles, considered mere verbiage; moreover, the religions do not give adequate teaching about man's inner nature. All this leads to lack of faith, and this in its turn leads us to hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is due to the lack of true knowledge; thence come pretence, simulation, the tergiversations provoked by the deceitful, merely intellectual verbiage that convinces no one — neither the one who utters it nor the one who hears it. Such mere intellectualism with its arguments leads to nothing real; it only permits the exploitation of those who know nothing.
So that when religion transformed itself into a merely objective organisation, devoid of the necessary subjective introspection, it went on deserving ever less respect from those other persons more reflective by nature.
In consequence, there have been countless rebels and seditious men who have risen against "Organised Religion" — because the God its propagandists preached had no value, and the organisation such religions maintained seemed rather a burden on society, incapable of orienting anyone.
As the intelligent questions concerning God could not be answered by religion, then, even where faith was professed, God was discarded as a matter unworthy of search or spiritual investigation. And for their part, the persons most given to the external questions of human relations have · 22
p. 23stood aside, specialising in non-religious questions, such as: politics, economics, sociology, etc. In consequence of all the above, religion has gone on being cornered and divided. In this process of disintegration of values, the word religion has naturally come to be regarded as a purely superficial matter, without any value.
And this could happen because the persons who defended religion spoke of God without knowing at all what that expression signifies — not even from an intellectual point of view that might at least satisfy reason. And religion made itself detestable when it threatened man with eternal damnation, basing itself for that on those concepts of sin and virtue that lack all value. But this people learned to defy intelligently.
It is a just retribution.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that one should discard religion in its organised form; it only means that the total idea about religion must be modified, and that society must be reorganised on the basis of a correct comprehension and knowledge — because, as has already been pointed out, religion is material and spiritual at once, subjective and at the same time objective, at one and the same time individual and collective, for it relates the visible with the invisible.
Only when such an integral comprehension exists can a duly organised society be established, and then religion will be able to function in its true aspect. Until this comes, individuals and society will continue attacking one another, and within each society its disaffected groups will form, united in small organisations disposed to destroy one another.
The times we live in are full of these desperate forces and, in this situation, teachings serve for nothing. Only from the dust of the destructions occasioned by man because of the mistaken concept he has of what true religion is — only from that dust of destruction, we say, can a new era emerge.
In that new era there will be a correct comprehension of the value of religion in its true acceptation, and then the relations of man to man, of man with society and of man with God will be established on a basis of equity and justice. Only then can there be true progress and happiness for all.
The chaos of the present world can only be corrected by a Superhuman Being, because neither the individual nor society has time for any form of analysis, since the forces of destruction are now launched at a fantastic and demolishing velocity. Fear has completely obscured man's intelligence. But one hope still remains to humanity, and this hope will be for when the Lord Mitra Deva comes to act among men.
So have the Great Knowers of the SUDDHA DHARMA MANDALAM declared. We shall still have to wait for the prophetic words to be fulfilled. 23
p. 24Cosmic influences and reactions of living beings. Influence of orientation and of magnets upon living beings. (Continuation).
By Pitágoras S∴I∴ — Dr. Jules Régnault has performed many experiments in this sense and has verified that, placing the subject towards the West, he obtained, by percussion, determined limits of the liver, stomach, heart, etc. Then making the subject change orientation — that is, orientation towards the North — he obtained, with percussion, differences in the previously established zones reaching up to 8 millimetres for the heart, 10 millimetres for the lower border of the liver, etc. The variation was analogous if, the subject being oriented towards the West, the pole of a magnetic rod was made to act, placed at a short distance from the organ or near the zone of reflex excitation of the organ existing at a determined point of the spinal column.
The influence of orientation manifests itself not only in the variation of volume of the organs verified by percussion, but also upon the humours and various organic liquids. Several experiments were performed in this sense by Dr. Régnault. [Sic: the original prints "el Dr. Mes Régnault".] A first experiment was performed on 19 March 1923 on a subject ill with malaria.
After having established the zone of dullness of the spleen at 7 cm in diameter, he placed a magnetised rod behind the second lumbar vertebra and verified that the said zone of dullness of the spleen was reduced to 6 cm in diameter. The histological examination of the blood made five minutes before and five minutes after the experiment showed that the lymphocytes passed from 6.5% to 25%.
In another experiment performed on 30 June and 1 July [Sic: the original prints "el Io de julio".] 1925, jointly with Prof. Lancelin, he verified the following modification of the histological formula of the blood, whose examination was made at 15 minutes' interval.
Orientation · lymphocytes · Mononuclears · Red · white corpuscles — Head to the West: 14% · 15% · 4,750,000 · 7,075 — Head to the North: 23% · 7% · 4,166,000 · 6,250 — On 17 May 1926, making a subject lying on a wooden bed change orientation, he obtained the following variations of the arterial pressure, the oscillometric index and the corpuscles of the blood. 24
p. 25Orientation · Arterial pressure · index · Corpuscles · Max. Min.
Oscillom. red · white — Head to the West: 14,5 · 10,0 · 2 , 5 - 7 · 6.100.000 · 12.000 — Head to the North: 14,5 · 10,5 · 3 - 6 , 5 · 5.540.000 · 10.000 — Head to the East: 15 · 9,0 · 3 - 7 , 5 · 5.200.000 · 11.000 — Head to the South: 15 · 11,0 · 2,5-7,5 · 5.000.000 · 10.000 — As can be verified, in the position "head to the East", which corresponds to the standing subject's position "facing the West", the greatest Max. and the least Min. and the greatest oscillometric amplitude are obtained. [Editorial gloss: the figures keep the printed decimal commas and spacing of the source table.] These data are in accord with what was observed by Dr. Albert Abrams who, in this orientation, obtained reflexes presenting the maximum of sensibility and the maximum of work — besides making us understand what has many times been verified, namely, that the great migrations have always been made with success when they were effected from East to West.
In the position "head to the North", which corresponds to the standing subject's position "facing the South", we verify, on the contrary, the weakest values — that is, the least variations. These data confirm, then, what the ancients had affirmed — that to sleep better one must place the head towards the North, because in that position the magnetic influences are minimal.
These results are in accord with the experiments performed by Engineer Müller, of Zurich, on the variation of a subject's resistance to an electric current with the varying of orientation.
Müller constructed an apparatus (which he named the neurometer, and which permits measuring this resistance of the human body) that enabled him to verify how the greatest resistance to the electric current is obtained when the subject is oriented with the head to the North — that is, when those influences are minimal.
As can be verified, the modern experiments destined to establish the influence of orientation — that is, of the position that permits receiving greater or lesser influences of the terrestrial magnetism — confirm the ancient beliefs, and we express the wish that these experimental studies be continued in the scientific laboratories, so as to contribute to an ever more complete knowledge of the human physiological manifestations related to the variations of external influences.
In the next article we shall say something on the influence of terrestrial magnetism on men "insulated" from or in "contact" with the earth. We hope that Disciples and Readers will know how to meditate this and deduce the practical applications it permits. 25

Reformas en la Orden Martinista.
Por JEHEL. Del:. Gen:, de la
O:. K:. R:. C:. y Presidente del
Gran Consejo de la Orden
Martinista.
Tal concepto fundamental, permanece inalterado.

activa y amorosamente.

Comentarios sobre el Primer Grado del Martinismo
Androgonía
Enseñanzas de Jehel, S:: I::
“refinadas”: azúcar blanca, harina blanca, no integral, aceites, sal y condimentos
fuertes.
aceitunas, anchoas, sardinas, bacalao, fiambres, etc.
lechuga y zanahoria rayada, etc. COMBINANDO LOS ALIMENTOS SEGÚN LAS
LISTAS PUBLICADAS.
No
pescado, moluscos, fiambres, sesos, ni hígado y derivados. Evitar huevos, quesos y
legumbres secas.

Vista penetrante,
tez morena, cabellos oscuros o rojizos.
estrecho, nariz aguileña, cabello negro o rojizo, poco ondulado, ojos negros y tez oscura.
Venus.
FAZ 4a.
presente, presencia austera, cejas espesas, cabellos negros y ondulados, boca grande nariz
los químicos y los criadores. Júpiter presente da una tez con verrugas o colores fuertes;
Quinta: Persona falsa, tonta y discutidora.
Quinta: Vida vulgar, oscura y profesiones correspondientes.

abdomen, brazos y cuello.

Por Asuri Kapila S:: I::

membranas semipermeables (Líquido intercelular-ectoplasma o membrana celular-
mandioca, tapioca, nueces, almendras, piñones, avellanas, porotos, lentejas, habas secas,
Estudiándonos a nosotros mismos, conociendo nuestra

(Traducido
de
“The
Suddha
Dharma”, Noviembre-Diciembre 1936)

Por Pitágoras S:: I::
