p. 4"A O R" (Antonio Olivio Rodríguez, 1879–1943) — Homage to an S∴I∴ who disincarnates. On 24 August last there disincarnated Brother ANTONIO OLIVIO RODRÍGUEZ, known under the esoteric name "AOR", who was the founder and animating soul of the "CÍRCULO ESOTÉRICO DA COMUNHÃO DO PENSAMENTO", a vast and fecund society of esoteric dissemination and initiation with its seat in São Paulo.
Born on 7 October 1879 in Portugal, "Aor" came to Brazil in 1890 and established himself there, marrying in 1900. By the beginning of 1902 his interest in the works of Flammarion, Kardec and others was already carrying his attention towards the spiritualist ideals, and he rapidly decides to give himself to the study and service of their doctrines and applications.
The works of the Martinist Order in the epoch of Papus; of the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross directed by Stanislas de Guaita; those of Barlet, Sédir, Saint-Yves d'Alveydre, Jollivet Castellot and all that brilliant chain of Martinists on one side; the works of Crookes and Aksakov on the other; the lectures of Vivekananda at Chicago in 1893 — all contributed to awaken the knowledge, enthusiasm and desire to share in the altruistic Service, in the noble and powerful soul of "Aor".
By virtue of the Occult Law that grants us all we deeply desire — and grants it the more swiftly and intensely the more intense and purely · 4
p. 5disinterested is our inner motive — the young AOR was led in 1907 to enter into contact with the Martinist Lodge which was silently working in São Paulo at that period under the direction of Dr. Horacio de Carvalho — that Martinist Initiator who, to become one, made a special journey to Paris to live near Papus and the other Initiators for the time needed to "prepare himself" to Understand, to Feel, and afterwards to Transmit and Serve, with all the force and fidelity his intense idealism made possible.
There AOR receives the bases of his future action and completes several aspects of his later polymorphic activity — entering later into contact with Instructors such as Hector Durville, whose work on "Personal Magnetism" AOR publishes in Portuguese, pawning the family jewels to do it. From Charles Barlet he receives the astrological knowledge with which in 1907 he organises the "Brasil-Psíquico Astrológico" and founds the review "O Pensamento".
In 1909 he launches the original Statutes of the "Círculo do Pensamento" (27 June 1909). In March 1917 he founds the Institute of Hermetic Sciences — and so on, successively adapting to the Brazilian and South American milieu the scheme of work which PAPUS and his companions had applied so fruitfully in Europe.
The support for "AOR's" work is so great that he obtains the collaboration — and at times true teachings of the highest value — of beings such as Prentice Mulford, Alberto van del Naitlen, Zeferino Velloso da Silveira Puntual, who thus join to "O Pensamento" other Initiatic Currents that come to add themselves to the influence of the Martinism AOR himself actively represents in his realisation — represented, silently, in that Order "O Pensamento" by the worth — still incompletely valued despite the great respect he enjoys — of Br∴ Sévaka, the most modest sage and kindly Brother whom they know as Professor Wladomiro Lorenz — to whom, in his address of 27 July 1926, "AOR" himself said that he spiritually kissed his hands for all that The Work owed him.
I recall that in October 1925 the Venerable Master Cedaior and I were in São Paulo visiting AOR, treating of several of the Martinist and esoteric activities of South America; already by then the "Círculo E.C.O.
Pensamento" had taken such development that the member's diploma with which AOR honoured me on that occasion bore the order number 30,568 — a figure by now more than tripled, in which, even discounting deceased and inactive members, the "current" of active members of "O Pensamento" always oscillates at a minimum of 15 to 20 thousand.
Its material realisations are enormous — the grandiose building it displays in the heart of the city of São Paulo; the private Library of the Order; its publishing house, which made it possible to launch on the South American market, besides many original and valuable works, good translations of classical masters (Eliphas Levi, Papus, Mulford, Vivekananda and so many others…) at extremely modest prices, in editions lovingly made.
And so, as Martinists remembering the words of "PAPUS" — "the visible is the manifestation of the Invisible" — we see that AOR's so enormous visible realisation answers to his inner invisible greatness, which today we reverence in saluting him fraternally as an Unknown Superior who knew how to fulfil the Service and Sacrifice freely accepted. "AOR" has died…. long live AOR. JEHEL, S∴I∴ · 5
p. 6"GIDEE", Martinist Order and O. K. R.
C. By JEHEL. S∴I∴ Dr. Kab.
Not only to satisfy the numerous requests for information on this subject, but also so that all our members of the "GIDEE" and novice brothers in the Martinist Order may form a clear idea of the "particular Road" our activity represents within the general Path constituted by the work of ALL the Initiatic Orders — those that really are such — I have thought it necessary to synthesise the progression of those activities as we try to develop them, in the image and likeness of the course traced of old by Stanislas de Guaita and Saint-Yves d'Alveydre.
The central axis of all action is, of course, the Martinist Order, which works in the following manner: 1st) By seeking to radiate help — in the form of preliminary knowledge, and of stimulus to the practice of a better life for body, soul and mind — to all who have an interest of any nature in these studies: whether from a desire to "know" more intellectually, that is, to "understand" better life, one's own being and the universe; or from a moral or devotional aspiration to surpass oneself by inner work.
To attain this end, Martinism, from the times of PAPUS, organised the "GIDEE" (Independent Group of Esoteric Studies), in whose courses we give the elements of all the basic sciences, without asking students what part of that knowledge they do or do not wish to adopt for personal orientation.
In a word, the student of the "Gidee" receives what he himself wishes to take, and no kind of discipline is imposed on him except by his own spontaneous and interior decision. The teachers of the Gidee silently observe the students who seek to "understand", to "feel" and to realise, and remain at the disposal of all those who ask for more intimate orientation.
At the same time the GIDEE seeks to carry out a work of collaboration with all the societies of dissemination analogous to it, of whatever denomination and end — serious and not commercial — they may be.
2nd) The Martinist Order of South America now has no other end — and consequently no other modality of work: the persons who, holding a preliminary conviction, seek to reaffirm and affirm it by deeper studies and by a methodisation of their personal activities, are "initiated" into the Order. This means that, · 6
p. 7as in all "initiations", the disciple accepts an orientation defined by the Order itself — an orientation that in this case may be summed up in a few points: a) "Theoretical" studies according to programmes divided into "series" of subjects, on each of which series the disciple sits an examination to prove he has "understood" the theory. b) Small individual and collective practices, destined principally to develop in the Martinist his will, his sensibility and his devotion, as well as the learning of the simplest forms of Service towards others and "docility" to the orienting impulse of the Venerable Masters of the Invisible. c) The difficult, daily lesson of "collective life": learning in the Order to understand, tolerate, help and love one's brothers and sisters of Group or Lodge. d) Assiduity, perseverance, disinterestedness and the other modalities of individual perfecting are cultivated progressively, in a form which, if it sometimes escapes the disciple's sight, is observed in detail by the Initiators.
By progress made in harmony — the greatest possible, without pretensions to perfection, since Martinism is still an elementary school — disciples pass in due course to degrees one to three, which are the indispensable base for demonstrating that one has understood, felt, and is on the way to realising the whole fundamental part of the occult doctrine.
It should be noted here that from the time of PAPUS the purpose of Martinism was already clearly declared: principally, to form Unknown Superiors — beings capable of putting the realisation just indicated into action, SERVING actively in ANY SECTOR of the PROGRESS OF THE HUMAN COLLECTIVITY.
This point is most important, for it means the Martinist Order has no ambition for ITS OWN progress as sect, society or the like, but the SPIRITUAL AND PSYCHIC DESIRE to stimulate and collaborate practically with the action of other Orders — which Martinism can also Serve directly or indirectly — as in all sectors of Collective Activity: Art, Science, Sociology, Teaching, etc. Therefore the Martinists of the 4th degree or above — the true Unknown Superiors of the human and visible plane, UNDER the influence of the Masters — must, besides exercising their role of Initiators and FAITHFULLY transmitting the esoteric Tradition, adapt its applications, pedagogically and on practical ground, in all the forms that moment, milieu and personal possibility permit.
It is what the Martinist calls: TO GIVE. But the Martinist Order itself receives in its turn an impulse — invisible to Martinists of too concrete a mentality — not only from the Venerable Masters of the Invisible but from another, nearer or more direct source: the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross, whose members silently cast into the ambit of the Gidee, of the Martinist · 7
p. 8Order, and outside it, the "seed" of the ideas that are ripe for a more or less near realisation.
Thus the Martinist Order becomes, in this form, a true "antechamber" of the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross, whose ends are, in sum: to lead its initiates to the realisation of High Christian Mysticism; to set an invisible but strong containing wall against the activities of false initiates, of the cultivators of evil and of black magic; and to intervene silently but actively wherever the Traditional Truth is being deformed by ignorance or with selfish intent.
If I wished to make of all this a kabbalistic summary, we might say the three organisations form a kind of collective Being that has: the "GIDEE" for its visible body — of vegetative, numerical growth and well-visible action, concrete and practically considerable, especially on the ground of "dissemination". It is the Material Plane of the Action.
The MARTINIST ORDER OF SOUTH AMERICA for its Soul — penetrating the sentimental, moral, devotional ground and that of the realisation of Individuals, placing them in relation with the Astral: this part being the Astral of the Action.
The KABBALISTIC ORDER OF THE ROSE-CROSS for its Spirit — being a synthesis of the Assent of Conscience through Understanding, and the Cooperation of the Higher Mind directing the Soul, through Union with the other beings of the same state and with the Planes of Higher Intuition.
The other societies which relate to us directly or indirectly — or are even represented by Brothers of our orders — always do so, of course, in relation to the preceding plane, by natural correspondence. That is why we see Martinists representing Orders such as the Ramana Ashram, or the Suddha Dharma Mandalam, or others, as appears from our publications.
The breadth and elasticity of this way of proceeding is so great that, for example, Martinism prepares its members so that they may indifferently seek realisation by the magical way, the devotional way, the intellectual way, etc.; for, as Stanislas de Guaita said in an address on the reception of a Martinist to the third degree, the essential is that the Martinist have always for his wall Human Solidarity, the law of reciprocity, the law of Service — that Universal Love which begins consciously in each of us from the moment we perform the first voluntary, conscious and disinterested act of SERVING others and giving back all that we received.
An eloquent South American example of this adaptation made by the Martinist S∴I∴s we find, for instance, in the — now deceased — Brothers Darío Velloso, who founded in Brazil the Neo-Pythagorean Institute, and A. O. Rodríguez, to whom we refer in another part of this review, who founded the "Círculo Esotérico do Pensamento", likewise in Brazil.
Both were S∴I∴ of the Martinist Order, and showed themselves worthy of the one who signed their diplomas as Martinist Initiators: the Venerable Master PAPUS.
p. 9Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism — Androgony (Continuation) — Teachings of Jehel, S∴I∴ — The Venerable Master PAPUS having demonstrated to us — as we saw in the preceding article — the verification of the Law of the Ternary or Trinity in the human being, let us continue in the study of his teachings on the human being. Papus says the following: "Let us now leave the details aside and try to discover the integral constitution of man.
As I have already told you, the human being is formed of three organic centres: head, chest and belly. The head appears first, the belly afterwards, and the chest is born between the two. Moreover, each of these centres has a fluid specially bound to it.
Thus the belly has the lymph, the chest has the blood, and the head has the nervous fluid. But these three physiological forces are not found only in their place of birth. In effect, each of them is represented in the other centres.
This is a key on which I insist a little, because in treating of the human constitution one does not generally rest the study on positive experiments — which are, however, very easy to make.
Well then, the observation of physiological phenomena permits us to affirm that lymph exists not only in the belly but also in the chest; blood not only in the chest but also in the head and the belly; and likewise nervous force not only in the head but in the chest and in the belly. This, then, is a key to the construction of the human machine, with its three centres.
Until now I have spoken to you only of the central organs of the physical body; but there are besides three pairs of members joined to those three principal parts of the corporeal organism, namely: 1st) A pair of abdominal members (thighs, legs, feet). 2nd) A pair of thoracic members (arms, forearms, hands). 3rd) A pair of encephalic members (the lower jaws), well known to circus acrobats and studied and recognised by science.
p. 10But the body is not merely a corpse. There are very "learned" people who try to place us in difficulties by asking: "Sir, you who are a spiritualist — did you ever find the soul under your scalpel?".. Well, you may answer them this: "Sir, if you are a watchmaker, tell me, have you found a working spring in a broken watch…?
It is exactly analogous. A corpse does not function and lives only in an anarchic mode; it is the society of tomorrow. A broken watch does not go either.
The mystery of human life is as difficult to understand as that of the going of a watch, because elasticity — that faculty which makes a steel spring contract — is as mysterious scientifically as human life, and both have the same origin. Let us now examine the living or waking man.
This man is formed of three physical parts constituting the body we have just studied, and, besides, of a force — we shall so call it — which actuates man while he sleeps. There is a state in which the gentleman infatuated with himself and the one who is not are equals, in which the beautiful young woman is not distinguished from the older or less beautiful one. This state, very interesting to study, is called sleep.
Well then, when we sleep, is the body "stopped, halted"? Evidently not. All the organs function under the influence of a force which physicians call the unconscious, or — organic life.
Here no anatomical or physiological classification is needed to understand what is meant. Simply imagine everything "that runs" while you sleep — that is, the respiratory, circulatory and digestive organs with their annexes — and you will then know the true domain of the unconscious, that is, of the "animal that dwells within us". But that is not the whole human being.
In its turn, a third element will then act. It will be the conscious. We thus have three principles: physical body, organic life and conscious, which constitute the living man and about which I hope no "chicanery" will be made against me, since their existence cannot be placed in doubt.
Let us now seek the origin of these three elements. OUR BODY is a garment which the Earth lends us for one existence and which she will take back, sooner or later. If, then, you care especially for your body, it may be said you are occupying yourselves with nothing more than the animals that dwell in you.
Here the body is — let us not forget it — the centre of evolution of the whole animal nature. AND THE UNCONSCIOUS — what is it and whence does it come? —First, I need to remind you of a fact that some of you have perhaps forgotten. Before birth you were bound to your Lady Mother by a certain tie called the umbilical cord.
And if you were philosophers before being born, you may perhaps have said to yourselves: "My mother?.., why, she does not exist!... Well, what still remains of the umbilical cord is there to remind you of the prior and necessary existence of your mother with respect to you, during gestation.
But just as we were re-bound to our mother by a tie invisible to us at that time — the umbilical cord — so now we are re-bound to the terrestrial atmosphere by an invisible tie, respiration, and it is from the atmospheric air that we draw our life. This is so true that, if "relations are cut" between us and the terrestrial atmosphere, we rapidly fail and die to the Earth. 10
p. 11What, then, is the terrestrial atmosphere? It is simply the centre of the earth's respiration. The earth is a complete being for us, and consequently the atmosphere re-binds us to all the other terrestrial beings.
That is why the unconscious that circulates in us is the very same that circulates in a dog, in a frog, etc. Moreover that organic life re-binds us further to all the sectors of our solar system. One may therefore affirm that all the movement produced in our universe reverberates in the individual unconscious, which Paracelsus called the astral sense. That word provoked numerous discussions because it was not understood.
For now, I try to show you its true meaning, and I hope that henceforth you will not forget that the human astral is what re-binds us to the universal. When we die, that little of astral we possess permits us to communicate, in a certain form, with the whole world. This gives us the key to telepathic phenomena.
When a son dies hundreds of kilometres from his mother and "appears" to her, it is by means of the astral and not by the mental that he then communicates with her or with other beings. Thus, then, the unconscious proceeds from the astral. Now, the astral is essentially the world of presentiments, of inspirations, of passions, of struggles, of the "lion".
That is the origin of this word "astral" and its localisation in the human being. AS FOR THE CONSCIOUS PRINCIPLE, it is of divine origin and we shall give it the name of spirit. In this form, with the body, the astral and the spirit, we have wherewith to construct our physiological and psychological "lord".
As you will recall, we had constructed the physical "lord" with three concepts and three fluids or forces bound to each of the three parts of the human organism.
Well then, if you do not forget that each of these three principles "strolls" through the other two, you will discover the key of the human constitution much better than in numerous philosophical or scientific books. [Sic: the period after "books" is missing in the original.] We can now trace three columns. In the first we shall put the physical; in the second, the astral; in the third, the spiritual. Physical — Astral — Spiritual.
You already know the meaning of these terms, and you know it is much easier to substitute others for them if they do not please you, since words are in reality nothing more than garments of ideas. (To be continued). 11
p. 12Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ — After Saturn and Jupiter, it now falls to us to study the Planet MARS. J.
BURGOYNE, the Rosicrucian and Author of "The Light of Egypt", quoted by PAPUS, says: "This planet, among all the others, was the object of a divine cult by the ancient world. Mars seems to have been the most sincerely adored of all the gods by our northern forefathers. In those rude epochs, the greatest warrior enjoyed the greatest glory.
Therefore Mars, in his universal character, represents the god of war. He was also symbolised by Vulcan, the celestial smith who forged the thunderbolts of Jupiter. This indicates the empire of Mars over iron, steel and cutting instruments.
Kabbalistically, the planet Mars signifies the faculty of nourishment in the Grand Man, and therefore corresponds to the sense of taste in the human being. We have in the New Testament a direct allusion to the expression of these Martian forces in relation to physical sensations, when it says: "Let us eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die".
On the esoteric planisphere, Mars becomes the angel Samael (or Zanael), in whom reside the most elevated attributes of the spirit. As such, they represent the faculty and the capacity to appreciate the most elevated, finest and subtlest essences of the life-wave, and consequently to rule the powers of absorption and assimilation.
Astrologically considered, Mars symbolises and incarnates in his astral expression the spirit of cruelty and destruction, blind and sanguinary. The true son of Mars is a natural fighter of the first force, and is never so happy as when completely given over to conquering his adversary. A type of this enterprising spirit may be found in the history of Great Britain.
England is ruled by the sign of Aries (the Ram), the principal sign of Mars, and the pure English type is Martian. It is not possible to find a better subject of study to illustrate Mars than John Bull. His history for a thousand years on land and on the sea is a history of brilliant victories with very few reverses.
On the intellectual plane, Mars represents the spirit of enterprising initiative, energy and courage. Without the stimulus of this planet, all men would be effeminate, indolent and without energy. Those who are dominated by the Martian influence are artisans, that is, "doers" in the highest expression; they possess an invincible, indefatigable energy and a powerful will.
On the physical plane, Mars indicates all those who are in some way connected with the production or use of iron and steel. All Martians prefer occupations in which cutting instruments, iron or fire are used, such as barbers, butchers, blacksmiths, surgeons, etc. When Martians are compared with Saturnians, opposite poles are found. One resembles a slow, consuming illness dragging on indefinitely; the other is like a burning fever.
Whatever they may be, you will always find in Martians a fiery, obstinate and furious character, and in many cases they will be cruel and destructive; nevertheless they are at the same time generous to excess · 12
p. 13towards their friends and are fond of good society. The description of a typical Martian is more or less this: medium stature, robust and well-made body, ruddy complexion, penetrating eyes, square jaw, bold gaze and a lively or provoking character. The colour of the hair varies, but it generally has a fiery tint".
The Martinist Astrologer JULEVNO teaches us that MARS: "Dominates the forehead, the nose, the gall-bladder, the genital organs, kidneys, muscles, the vital valour and the temperament. His violence produces all the malignant fevers, sudden illnesses, intestinal inflammations, wounds and violent deaths with effusion of blood.
He designates enemies, betrayals, calumnies, wounds by iron or fire, successes in struggles, duels; deaths by poison, fire or madness, masculine relations. He grants a valiant, reckless, violent, impulsive, independent, demonstrative, cynical, spirited character, inclined to reforms and often to destruction.
MARS BEING LORD OR SIGNIFICATOR OF THE BIRTH, WHEN ILL-DISPOSED, will make the person irascible, brutal, reckless, authoritarian, proud, perfidious, lascivious, lying, perjured, inclined to quarrels, to cruelty and even to crime.
MARS WELL-DISPOSED IN THE CHART [Sic: the original prints "NIEN" for "BIEN" (well).] makes the subject enterprising, daring in his conceptions or undertakings, somewhat violent, impulsive, but reasonable, devoted, prudent and magnanimous, valiant against adversity, generous, loving the military art and the sciences.
TYPICAL MARTIANS are strong of constitution, generally have the head small in relation to the body, the forehead very high or bare, and chestnut hair with glints or reddish. The face is oval; Martians are frequently seen with reddish or violet blotches on the face; the eyes are small, with an expressive, audacious and mischievous gaze.
The mouth is frequently large [Sic: the original prints "con frecuenta" for "con frecuencia" (frequently).] but with fine lips; the nose is raised in its middle part, sharp at the tip, and the nostrils are dilated. The beard is hard and short. Their voice is strong and resounding, their movements somewhat brusque, and they walk with long strides, making their heels ring.
In the next article we shall treat the planet SUN. For those readers who wish to form an idea of some types of Martians, I shall cite some quite different examples: Types born in Aries: Catherine de' Medici, the Brothers Salomón and Theoclea. Types born in Scorpio: The Venerable Masters Paracelsus and Papus.
The profane Victor Hugo, Napoleon and Hitler. The Brothers Jehel, Martha and others. It is interesting to note that Victor Hugo and Napoleon were both "perjurers" to initiatic engagements of great importance.
As an example of a cruel profession among those of Scorpio, there are several professional executioners, such as the celebrated Mr. Deibler, who was for many years the official executioner of the French nation. (To be continued). 13
p. 14The "Maha-Surya-Pranasana" is composed of 10 movements: the 5 this page illustrates, in the order indicated, and the five that consist in returning to the initial posture by executing the same movements in reverse order. 14
p. 15Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continuation) — By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ — MAHA-SURYA-PRANASANA — After the publication of a series of Asanas [Sic: the original prints "Asnas".], some easy, others difficult to perform, we now think it opportune to make known to the readers of LA INICIACIÓN a marvellous exercise which may be considered a true "synthesis of asanas" and which bears the name MAHA-SURYA-PARANASANA [Sic: so printed here; elsewhere "PRANASANA".], whose meaning is "great solar respiratory posture".
As there are many persons who, owing to their multiple daily tasks, lack the time necessary to practise the Asanas — and especially those of difficult technique — we recommend to these persons the Maha-Surya-Pranasana which, practised daily, will permit them to maintain the health of body, soul and mind.
Moreover this Asana is especially indicated for all those who, obliged to sedentary work, like office employees and intellectuals in general, find themselves obliged to remain many hours of the day seated and bent over books or papers. The Maha-Surya-Pranasana is, as we have said, a true synthesis of asanas, for in it 10 postures are performed, synchronised with rhythmic respirations.
Before describing these ten postures we shall set forth what are the beneficial effects obtained from it. BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THE MAHA-SURYA-PRANASANA. The beneficial effects derived from the MAHA-SURYA-PRANASANA may be summed up as follows: 1) Re-establishment of the dynamic equilibrium in the various functions of all the organs, insufficiencies thus disappearing and hyperfunctions being curbed.
2) As a consequence of that return to functional equilibrium there disappear the various pathological manifestations such as dyspepsia, chronic constipation, haemorrhoids, hepatic disorders and, in general, all the dysfunctions of the digestive apparatus. 3) Asthma, cough, pulmonary tubercular infiltrations or nodules and, in general, all those pathological manifestations due to a defective respiratory rhythm.
4) Rheumatism, sciatica, arthritism, gout, etc. — in a word, all those manifestations due to alterations of the metabolism or interchange. 5) Arrhythmias, cardiac valvular defects, increase of pressure, arteriosclerosis and, in general, all those pathological forms manifested in the circulatory system. 6) Pathological manifestations of the central and peripheral nervous system, due to physical and astral causes.
7) All those disequilibria derived from functional alteration of the endocrine glands, as for example hypo- and hyperthyroidism, hypo- and · 15
p. 16hyperadrenalism, etc., and especially in all those illnesses due to hormonal dysfunctions of the testicles and the ovaries. As may be observed from all that has been synthetically said about the beneficial effects of the Maha-Surya-Pranasana, there is no organic apparatus that does not recover its normal functional rhythm, thus obtaining the establishment of the Health sought in vain by many other means.
This asana, which can be performed by both sexes, by children, the young and the old, will permit, in a word, the disappearance of each and every pathological manifestation with the re-establishment of the vital rhythm whose deviation had caused them. The practice and experience of this asana have permitted us to observe that the beneficial effects manifest themselves in this order.
1) After 21 days [Sic: the original prints "21 día" (day).] of practice an increase of appetite is obtained. 2) After 60 days digestive disturbances disappear. 3) After 90 days the effects produced by poor digestion and altered metabolism disappear completely — the skin, for example, becoming silky, clean and rosy again.
4) After 120 days obesity, especially abdominal, has disappeared completely and the bodily forms have returned to their harmonious proportions. 5) After 180 days the vital rhythm has been completely re-established and the whole body functions perfectly, as synthesis and result of the harmonious functioning of all the organic apparatus.
Readers can easily imagine that, with the return of physical health, all those sickly manifestations of the soul as well — pessimism, envy, ill humour, nervousness, etc. — disappear as if by enchantment to give place to optimism, joy, tranquillity and above all an intense and marvellous sensation of euphoria, of living life to the full, just as after winter we feel ourselves revive with the return of the warm and perfumed spring.
TECHNIQUE.- Now that we have set forth the beneficial effects of this Asana, we shall describe its technique; but first a clarification must be made: We are going to begin with the description of the technique of the first type, warning the reader beforehand that these 10 postures must be performed with gentleness, rigorously avoiding each and every brusque movement.
TECHNIQUE OF THE 1st POSTURE: VEVI-STHA-ASANA.- The first posture of the Maha-Surya-Pranasana begins with the salutation to the Sun, to Nature and to the whole Universe, and therefore bears the name VEVI-STHA-ASANA, which means "standing salutation position".
Being in the countryside, on a flat roof or simply on a balcony — in a place, in short, where there is much sun and pure air — station yourself on a small rug, standing with the legs together; join the palms of the hands as when one wishes to make an entreaty or prayer, with the arms held to the sides of the thorax and the forearms bent as indicated by No. 1 of Fig. No.
16, which comprises five of the 10 postures. In this vertical position, with the torso erect and the gaze fixed on the horizon, inhale deeply and slowly through the nose, retain the air for one second, and then exhale, likewise deeply and slowly. Repeat these respirations 5 to 10 times. (To be continued) · 16
p. 17Is it possible to prolong youth? Does a Spiritual Alchemy exist capable of restoring our youth? – Causes of old age and of death. By Asuri Kapila S∴I∴ — In order to avoid the slow and progressive accumulation of inert substances in the intercellular spaces of the tissues, in the various organic liquids, and especially in the walls of the arteries and veins which, as we have seen [Sic: the original prints "henos visto" for "hemos visto".] in No.
19 of LA INICIACIÓN, are the true determinants of that state of slackness of all the tissues known by the name of old age. It is necessary, then, to begin to execute a whole series of hygienic practices and a system of physical exercises whose purpose is gradually to obtain the elimination of those harmful inert substances. What are those hygienic practices and physical exercises that can make us eliminate those substances?
1) First of all, to employ all those practices of corporeal hygiene known to everyone, which may be summed up in the abundant use of pure water and in taking advantage of sunlight, so as constantly to eliminate from the external surface of the body and from the cavities open to the external world all those impurities arising either from the deposit upon that surface or in the concavities of diverse substances coming from the environment (as for example dust, smoke, etc.) or from the deposit of another kind of substances derived from the depth of the tissues (as for example sweat, mucous secretions, waste of the digestive tube, etc.).
Those noxious substances, whether coming from the external world or the internal one, if not eliminated would obstruct the normal functioning of those cavities and would block the small canaliculi of the sudoriparous and sebaceous glands, thus hindering that important function of the skin known by the name of "perspiratio insensibilis", that is, the insensible respiration of the skin.
2) To activate the vital dynamism of all the organs by living an active life, which can be achieved by means of a prudent hydrotherapy, massage and above all by long walks in the midst of nature (countryside, forest, beach, mountain, etc.), which moreover permit the breathing of pure air and the enjoyment of sunlight.
3) The methodical and persevering practice of all those physical exercises known under the name of Asanas, from which many readers of LA INICIACIÓN have been able to obtain an evident benefit through their study in the Progressive Course of Asana Yoga we have been publishing, and their uninterrupted practice.
Those exercises have the advantage of not stealing much time from very busy persons — as are almost the generality of those who live in the excessively dynamic modern Western world — (for only a few minutes daily are needed for their performance) and of · 17
p. 18acting, moreover, as we have already said, not only on the physical vital dynamism, but also and at the same time on the soul and the mind. We could have detailed at much greater length all those physical practices necessary to contribute to the maintenance of health, to prevent ageing or — in case it has set in — to recover youth; but we believe all those practices can be synthesised in three classes: 1) Use of pure water.
2) Utilisation of solar radiations. 3) Increase of the vital dynamism by means of walks and the practice of Asanas. We leave, then, to the good sense of readers the prudent and adequate use of these three factors of physical order — factors which, though not the only ones, are nevertheless fundamental for the maintenance of health and the recovery of youth prematurely lost.
In the next article we shall occupy ourselves with the second and no less important factor of rejuvenation, that is, the dietetic one. PEACE TO ALL BEINGS — U A M — (To be continued) · 18

Srinivasachariar) — The Doctrine of the Suddha Dharma: dharma, as has been previously declared, conduces to the growing benefit of the race.
A certain dharma which conduces to well-being only for particular periods of time, for determinate classes of men, and fructifies in special benefits, is limited in its operation; on the contrary, the dharma which conduces to profit without regard to the vicissitudes of time, place and persons is of universal application.
These two aspects of dharma are known as Asuddha and Suddha respectively; the efficacy of the first [Sic: the original prints "le eficacia" for "la eficacia".], however limited it may be, is due solely to its being based on the second, which is, so to speak, its very centre of life; the first refers principally to the aspect of matter and form, or principally to the aspect of life and force, while the second refers to the universal or transcendental aspect.
Asuddha Dharma is, in sum, only a limited aspect of the Suddha Dharma, which is at one and the same time [Sic: the original prints "a un miso tiempo" for "mismo".] universal and eternal; the Suddha Dharma refers to unity. [Sic: the original prints "la Suddha 19rama se refiere", the folio number 19 intruding into the word "Dharma".] While the other refers to one or more aspects of that unity.
The Suddha Dharma is the substantial doctrine of all religious men and, treating the relations of spirit with matter as a whole, adopts the transcendental or Brahmic point of view. The excellence of the Suddha Dharma lies in that, as such, it is · 19
p. 20applicable to all men, in all places and all times; the exercise of the Suddha Dharma holds for whoever practises it a permanent happiness, and not only capacitates him to attain physical prosperity but also helps him to acquire a higher spiritual excellence.
A general practice of the Suddha Dharma by the peoples is destined, by reason of its very nature, to effect amid the variously divided masses of the world's population a salutary community of kinship, of faith, devotion and worship. The due practice of the Suddha Dharma involves, among other aspects, a correct execution of acts.
In order that a given act may be correctly executed, knowledge of the means and manner of doing it is the first and most essential thing; an inclination to do the act, accompanied by a resolution to do it, is essential in the second place; and its actual execution is so in the third. In case any of these essential requisites is lacking, the act cannot be duly executed.
If one knows how an act is done but is not inclined or resolved to do it, the act cannot be duly executed, though an attempt were made to execute it; in case one knows the means and manners of doing the act and is likewise inclined to do it, but does not do it, the act is so far not executed; in other words, due knowledge, inclination and action are necessary and essential for the proper execution of any act; again, in other words, the essential elements of any act include, among other matters, an intellectual, an astral and a physical readiness; thus it may be laid down as a postulate that every act is the synthesis of knowledge, of desire and of action.
When these three elements operate, but one or more of them fall short of the fullness of their norm, the act, though executed, falls short in that degree of its perfection. Once an act has been thus duly and completely executed, the man who has done it no longer has to engage himself in doing it further; which would not be so had he merely done the act without attending to its perfection.
When a definite act is thus fulfilled in its integrity, the person who has done it in that manner, having nothing to do beyond its execution, may be considered to have obtained release from the necessity of doing that act.
The true abandonment of the execution of any act is only compatible with the complete execution of the same, and such abandonment is technically called sannyasa; in other terms, sannyasa is the fullness attained by the just execution of any act; without such fullness there can be no abandonment of the execution of any act whatsoever.
Man is perpetually engaged in the execution of one class of act or another — in fact he cannot be otherwise — and once the necessity regarding the just fullness of the execution of acts is recognised, it becomes easy to secure exoneration from the necessity of executing an act repeated times; and this is obtained solely by recurring to the just completion of the execution of that act.
A person having taken upon himself the doing of an act, unless and until he executes it, remains bound, so to speak, to the execution of that act; the liberation from this bond is sannyasa. · 20
p. 21It is said that sannyasa is the first necessary stage of purification in the life of the disciple. Penetrating as is this bond that ties a person to the execution of acts, still more penetrating is that other bond which chains men to the longing for the fruit of their accomplished act.
Many times the disciple may strive to break the invisible links of this adamantine chain; but only when acts are justly executed without regard to personal or selfish interest, but with a view to the universal interest, does the loosening of this chain begin; the links break to pieces when the motive of all the activity he may develop is the necessity of executing the action as it is appreciated from the universal point of view; as egoism and self-interest diminish, acts are duly executed, since acts are to be executed for the good of the world.
The disposition to service and to sacrifice is then the predominant one in the disciple; the profit that results as a consequence of such service and sacrifice does not enslave the aspirant, because he seeks it not for himself but for the sake of the world in general.
This detachment from the fruit of accomplished acts is technically called tyaga; thus, by renouncing for oneself the fruit of accomplished acts is tyaga attained; from tyaga comes liberation from all action; such tyaga is said to be the second necessary stage of purification in the life of the disciple.
Sannyasa and Tyaga capacitate the disciple to unfold in himself a willing disposition to the perfect service of the world; the postulant recognises the universal necessity of service and performs it perfectly with the profound conviction that nothing is worthy of being done unless it be for the good of the world. That incessant service constitutes his sole concern.
The execution of the service of the world upon this plan is the step of which there is notice in the scriptures of the Suddha Dharma Mandala as the Great Austral Path.
The principal quality for walking the Septentrional Path consists in the good disposition and capacity of the pupil to give himself to the service of the world in so far as he is capable of rendering it, his attitude with respect to all service being nevertheless that of tyaga, which is the sole true renunciation.
The goal to be attained by the disciple who walks the Septentrional Path is the realisation of the omnipresence of the Divinity. [Sic: the original prints "en la realización" where the sense requires "es la realización".] OM S. S. S. For the copy: Jehel 10-11-43. (To be continued) · 21
p. 22Origins of the Sikh Tradition (End) — Dedicated to the very dear friend JITH SINGH, Prince of Kapurthala. By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — It seems that the tremendous blow Nanak received from the death of Mardana was rude and painful for the Master, who did not survive him long.
And so, before the death of Nanak, another problem arose among his Hindu and Muslim disciples (he having attracted numerous disciples from Islam): how his mortal remains should be disposed of. The former wished to burn him, the latter to bury him. Nanak, before dying, was questioned on the matter, and answered: "Let the Hindus place flowers at my right and the Muslims at my left.
Those whose flowers are found fresh tomorrow morning shall have the privilege of disposing of my body as they please". After the flowers had been placed on both sides of Nanak's body, he covered the flowers and his own body with a sheet, feeling that the hour of farewell was arriving.
The following morning the sheet was found in its place, and the disciples, removing it, expected to find beneath it the body of the Master, looking at the flowers so as to receive the answer to the question asked the day before concerning the manner of disposing of the body. They found both sets of flowers quite fresh, shedding their perfume as if they had just been cut; but the body of the Master had mysteriously disappeared.
The date of the disappearance was in the month of September 1538, at Karaiarpur. [Editorial gloss: Kartarpur.] Nanak was succeeded by nine Masters or Spiritual Chiefs of Sikhism whom we shall cite briefly, and with each of whom we shall occupy ourselves separately in the future, since all of them played a glorious and important role in the religion of the Sikhs.
The second Master was Angad (1469-1539), a disciple of Nanak; he collected a good number of hymns and precepts of his predecessor, with which he began the compilation of the Adi Grantha Saheb (sacred Scripture of Sikhism). The Guru Angad invented a new alphabet, known by the name of Gurmukhi, now used as the vernacular tongue of the Punjab.
The third Master was Amandas (1552-1574) [Editorial gloss: Amar Das.], who was the one who influenced the mind of the Muslim emperor Akbar with the purpose of reconciling Hinduism with Islam. The fourth Master was Ram Das (1574-1581), who continued the friendly relation with the emperor Akbar, who ceded to the Sikhs some lands situated in Amritsar (holy city of the Sikhs), where Ram Das had the famous tank dug.
The fifth Master was the Guru Arjunmal, poet and man of business, and he knew how to draw profitable advantages from the friendship [Sic: the original prints "de la amistad de la amistad", duplicating the phrase.] that the emperor always extended to him; it is this Guru who erected the famous golden Temple at Amritsar, where the faithful [Sic: the original prints "los files" for "los fieles".] had their centre of reunion.
The emperor Akbar was succeeded by Jehangir, who for reasons of a particular order had the Master Arjunmal arrested and kept him prisoner until his death. The sixth Master was Har Govinda (1606-1645), who was the one who [Sic: the original prints "quine" for "quien".] organised the Sikhs militarily, in bodies separate from Muslims and Hindus, since the Sikhs could not forget the odious · 22
p. 23persecutions of the previous Master, imprisoned by the emperor Jehangir. The seventh Master, Har Rat (1645-1661) [Editorial gloss: Har Rai.], was the one who affirmed the military spirit of the Sikhs.
The eighth Master, who governed only three years, was Harrishan (1661-1664). [Editorial gloss: Har Krishan.] The ninth Master was Tegh Bahadur (1664-16765 [Sic: so printed, with a slipped digit and unclosed parenthesis; the second date should read 1675.], who after twelve years of agitated government died cruelly assassinated by the emperor Aurengrib. [Editorial gloss: Aurangzeb.] He was succeeded by Govinda, tenth Guru and last Spiritual Chief of the Sikhs (1676-1708), who founded the organisation of the Sikhs, predisposing them to erect under his personal command the empire of Punjab.
On the death of Govinda the Khalsas governed, whose executive power resided in a Supreme Council under the authority of the scriptures, which prescribed equality and fraternity among all Sikhs without distinction of castes. There then began a brilliant series of military campaigns crowned with the splendid victories of Ranjit-Sing, called the Lion of the Punjab, founder of the fleeting Sikh Empire.
On the death of Ranjit, which occurred in 1839, begins the weakening of the small Empire, hastened by the irresistible thrust of the English, under whose dominion the Punjab finally remained in the year 1849. Sikhism counts today several millions of faithful who follow the teachings of Nanak, whom they consider an incarnation of the Divinity. The word Sikh derives from the word "Sewak", meaning "a follower or disciple".
Its ascetic Orders are divided into four categories: Udasees, Nirmalees, Akalees and Suthre-Sahis. The Udasees may be called the true followers of the Guru Nanak and are much given to prayer and devotion.
They are generally found gathered in a species of convent, and at times are under the protection of some rich personage or man of elevated rank; they dress elegantly and have an imposing and venerable presence; it is a most beautiful race from the physical point of view; a Sikh has something special that at once draws attention; he bears a personal seal of distinction.
The Nirmalees lead a religious life, are solitary, and do not live in convents like the preceding. The Akalees are distinguished by their dark-blue garments with beautiful turbans. The Suthre-Sahis are more numerous and are recognised by the different marks they bear.
The Sikhs are bitter enemies of every class of images and symbols, in contrast with the other religions of India. The Scriptures of Sikhism are for the Sikhs the "word of God" and contain a very elevated moral code; high ideals of piety and purity and a most ample sentiment of tolerance and benevolence towards all things and beings.
Today the Punjab is one of the most progressive states of India. [Sic: the original prints "Hoy en día en Penjab es", with an intrusive "en".] Some day we shall make known to our readers all the beautiful progress through which India is passing, and we shall see the great and beautiful future reserved for her, whose revelation will be a valuable contribution to the evolution of humanity; she will reveal to us her science, her art and her religion, three things that hold inexhaustible treasures there.

“A O R”
(Antonio Olivio Rodríguez 1879 – 1943)
Homenaje a un S:: I:: que desencarna.
alma animadora del “CÍRCULO ESOTÉRICO DA COMUNHAO DO

Sacrificio libremente aceptados. “AOR” falleció…., viva AOR.

“GIDEE”, Orden Martinista y O. K. R. C.
Por JEHEL. S:: I:: Dr. Kab.
a)
d)

Pues bien, si no
Podemos ahora trazar tres columnas.

Enseñanzas de Surya. S:: I::
barberos, carniceros, herreros, cirujanos, etc.

5)
sistema circulatorio.
6)
Manifestaciones patológicas a cargo del sistema nervioso central y periférico,
debidas a causas físicas y astrales.
7)

TÉCNICA DE LA 1ª POSTURA: VEVI-STHA-ASANA.- La primera postura

Por Asuri Kapila S:: I::

inclinación y acción son necesarios y esenciales para la propia ejecución de cualquier acto;
otros términos, sannyasa es la plenitud alcanzada por la justa ejecución de cualquier acto;

renunciando al fruto para uno mismo de los actos cumplidos, es como tyaga es alcanzada;
Divinidad.

Orígenes de la Tradición Sikh
(Fin)
Dedicado al muy querido amigo JITH SINGH,
Príncipe de Kapurtala.
Por Asuri Kapila, S:: I::

Cuando cese la lucha entre la necesidad de creer y el deseo de negar;
despertemos con los dioses, como dicen los indos;
Bebiendo en el seno de la Madre Naturaleza, fuera y dentro de nosotros;
