Kabbalah — Yoga and Rosicrucian Synthesis. By JEHEL. S∴I∴ — It is frequent to hear students of the Western occult tradition express some doubt about the real value of the teachings and practices originating in the East — some authors of a certain fame having gone so far as positively to deny their value for the peoples of the West.
It is no less frequent to hear Western students of the Eastern teaching emit somewhat contemptuous opinions of the teachings of Western occultism, going so far as to affirm that only the yogic or analogous initiation can lead to a true realisation.
Both ways of expressing conviction — respectable only for their sincerity, where it exists — put in evidence a fact lamentable in itself: that neither the one nor the other has understood the very thing they study and, what is surer still, that they have not practised their own theories; for had they done so they would have discovered the UNITY underlying both faces of the Tradition — if one wishes to accept them as "separate", which is a mere illusion created by differences of terminology and chronology.
Let us look, for example, at the mysterious being, double and inverted in its superposed positions, that illustrates the Zohar. The first thing that strikes the attention is that the Plexuses (Chakras) are perfectly indicated and that, further, the kabbalistic letters designating them correspond exactly to the type of force residing and working there — coinciding entirely with the teaching of the East.
The IOD (spiritual principle) resides in the Plexus of Command (between the brows) and thence directs the whole individual life (Jivatma) contained in the form, down to the second "Hé", localised in the sexual Plexus (Muladhara), where it manifests as the creative force of "new forms" of organised life, external or internal — that is, for physical reproduction (generation) or for internal creation (regeneration).
The man inverted upon the first — forming with him the mysterious six-pointed star — thus places the same "IOD" in the place where, in the fallen man (involved, with his feet on "the ground"), stood the "Hé" of physical sex, and shows the point of departure of the · 4
construction of the evolved man (with his feet in heaven) by the mystical use of the sexual force. I think it needless to insist on the perfect identity of this allegorical way of teaching the "Kundalini-Yoga" of the Kabbalah with the teachings of the East. Many other examples could be brought forward; for the two traditions are not "alike or equal" — they are ONE ALONE, presented in distinct languages, symbols and epochs.
Nothing more. If we look panoramically at that identity of theory and practice, we shall see the following: 1st) Both ways initially grant the Disciple a brief and systematic theology, representative of the attributes of the Divinity — trinitarian as primordial manifestation and unitary in essence.
2nd) Both ways present the Disciple a systematisation of the sensible World, or "Nature", and the correspondence between its forces and those in permanent action within the human being himself, as well as the "bond" that links the ones to the others.
3rd) Both ways present the Disciple ONE SINGLE END: Union with the Divine Will, by way of several partial "roads", all fused in the Great Path (the Mahayana of the East, and the direct Way of Illumination of the Hermetists and Kabbalists).
4th) Both ways give as result — and this is surely the essential — the same type of realisers: wise saints and synthetists; that is, a few rare exemplars who, in each epoch, manage to manifest an equilibrium between "knowing" and "feeling" up to a height "x" which it is of no interest to determine, since it is always the maximum that individual can attain "this time".
There are people who believe an Eastern Initiate is fatally a dreamer cultivating, in the laziness of retreat, a useless meditation. There are those convinced that every Western Initiate is a severe and surly savant.
The truth is, finally, quite other: Pandit of the East or Intellectual Master of the West, both bow reverent before the marvels of the Living Truth and Harmony in Eternal Action, which they Understand and attempt to translate for minds less apt to function simultaneously in the small and the eternal, in the minutely infinitesimal and the universal.
Sannyasin of the East or Mystic of the West — the same devotion, the same renunciation of the personal, of the fruit of action; the same surrender to the Eternal Providence or the Divine Mother fills their hearts with Love for all Beings, the mystical way of loving God in his Creatures.
Gurus and Acharyas of the East, and real Masters of the West — all of Them walk through this World with the mind fixed on the Eternal and Sublime Truth, with the Light of Divine Love in the Heart, and with the Active Word on their lips: to instruct, to console, to guide, to stimulate, to protect, to unite beings among themselves and all with the Supreme.
Mahatmas of the East, Lameds of Israel, Illuminates of Jeoshua, Siddhas or Mystic Magi — all of Them realise in truth and in life the Marvellous Word which, in its various manifestations, we find in all, and which the phrases of some sum up thus: "There are beings whose thoughts, like mine, are constant prayers". (Zanoni.) "The work of the Martinist (altruistic Service) never suffers interruption and demands the constant use of his intellectual faculties…." (Martinist Ritual.) "Desire the truth as you desired air when you were under water". (The Blessed Ramakrishna.) "Let your surrender to the Divine Mother be total, without reserves of any kind". (Master Aurobindo.) "The stage of the magist's ''willing'' past; the stage of the theurgist's ''asking'' overcome — the Illuminate surrenders himself totally into the hand of Divine Providence" (Master Papus).
"Intellectual knowledge is indispensable for explaining, instructing, orienting those who begin the road; but only LOVE opens the inner world to true realisation". (Master Papus.) "The sandalwood perfumes the axe that cuts it". (Buddha, the Tathagata.) "Take, this is my body; and drink, this is my blood" (Jesus, and all the Conscious Sacrificed). LOVE ONE ANOTHER (Iswara — Isra-El — Jesus the King. CHRIST).
That is, in few words, what the Rosicrucians call the Synthesis: TO UNITE — Past and Present; East and West; Kabbalah and Yoga; Knowing and Feeling; Human and Divine Being: RAMA : AMAR [to love].
Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism — Androgony — Teachings of Jehel, S∴I∴ — I shall continue quoting Master PAPUS, for the extraordinary clarity of his teaching on this fundamental subject, as we have seen: CONSTITUTION BY THREE ELEMENTS — "If the law of Occultism is true — the law that says: what is above is analogous to what is below — and if we really thus possess a key that permits us to know the human constitution, that key is true for the soul as for the body; more: it can be affirmed that the body is made in the image of God, and that the truth is in it.
Therefore, when they come to speak to you of principles constituting man, seek them in the physical body — and if you do not find them there, you may reject as false whatever theory has been presented to you. Well then. Since it is a matter of numbers, let us try to know those manifested in the material body.
In the first place there are three "pieces" in the physical body: a belly, a chest and a head. This seems to me undeniable, and I hope you will grant it me. But the number 3 is not alone in the organism.
There are 7 orifices in your face: two eyes, two nostrils, one mouth and two ears; we have 10 fingers, 5 on each hand; 12 pairs of ribs — and I shall tell you in passing that this number has astral characteristics. Finally, the body divides into 2 general parts: a right half and a left half. Let us note all these numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 12.
Therefore, when you are told that man is composed of 3, of 5, of 7 or of 10 principles, a truth is being uttered. Now let us ask the body what is true in all this, and what are the keys that will permit us to apply these numbers to the total constitution of the human being. The Ancients bequeathed us a general key, which is the following: "Man is a trinity centralised in a unity — or, a ternary of unconsciouses ruled by a conscious".
All the other numbers you may find in the study of the human body are only annexes of the preceding, as I hope to demonstrate. So as not to go astray, let us remain on ground as positive as possible, taking man at his origin, and see how Nature fabricates him. Today.
This is known perfectly — one may say "hour by hour". And if it is exact to say that everything is true in the physical body, we shall easily find the rest by analogy.
Well then — the human body is constructed by means of three envelopes or follicles, as I shall indicate: First appears the external follicle, which will form the brain, the spinal cord, the nerves, the epidermis and its derivatives — nails, glands of the skin, hair of body and head, lungs, teeth, and the external genital ways. I shall call it the "outside skin" or, scientifically, ectoderm.
After this first envelope is born the internal follicle which, by evolution, will give birth to the digestive apparatus (intestine, liver, pancreas, stomach, salivary glands) and to the internal genital organs. We shall call it the "inside skin" or, scientifically, endoderm. If I employ banal terms to designate things all physicians know, it is because such terms will presently lead us to very clear classifications.
When the "inside skin" has been born, the intermediate follicle appears in its turn. This middle envelope, called mesoderm, will originate the chest, all the organs of the circulatory apparatus, as well as the dermis, the muscles of animal life, the cartilaginous and connective tissues, the peritoneal epithelium, the skeleton, the mesentery, and the coelomic epithelium that clothes the whole surface of the intestinal tube.
We shall follow, in a table to come, employing very general terms, the principal data of this long enumeration of the organs originated by the evolution of the three follicles just cited — and we shall represent it all by numbers. We shall number, then: "1" the ectoderm; "3" the endoderm; and "2" the mesoderm, since this is the term that rejoins the ectoderm to the endoderm.
Let us return now to the constitution of the mesoderm: this envelope, always born after the other two, is formed of two follicles. This observation is of capital importance for the following reason: when it falls to us · 8 — ENDODERM: digestive apparatus and its annexes. ECTODERM: nervous system, cutaneous system, lungs. MESODERM: chest, circulatory system, muscular and bony systems.
to classify, later, the psychic elements of the human being, many people will have great difficulty placing the one called "manas" — because it is double, and generally no one suspects it. Thus, then, a human foetus is born: an external follicle, an internal follicle and "afterwards" an intermediate follicle. Let us now observe the birth of an arm in a human foetus.
What will be born first? — Well, it will again be the most external term, or ectoderm. But what is the "ectoderm" in the arm? — It is simply the hand. So you will witness a supremely curious and amusing thing: a tiny little hand coming out of the shoulder.
And if by chance the growth of the arm stopped there, the child would be born with "frog''s paws" tied to the shoulder, and would be considered a monster. What will emerge next? The arm, constituted by a single bone: the humerus.
We thus have, already, terms 1 and 3. We lack term "2". But just as, in the previous case, the intermediate "double" was born between the external and the internal, so now the child''s forearm is born between his hand and his arm — and if the growth stopped at a certain moment, a child would be born with arm and hand but without forearm.
The development being normal, the forearm will present itself with its two bones, the radius and the ulna, between the arm and the hand. We have then, once more, the three elements: 1, 3 and 2 — or, in the final order, 1, 2 and 3. There is a truth to which I especially wish to call your attention: the multiple is always external.
Look at the number of bones in the hand; it is formidable. Between the phalanges, phalangines and phalangettes there are at least 20. Well then.
All that constitutes the exterior. Therefore, all those who make classifications of 20 principles or more are merely exoterists. And as for those who make binary classifications, in which good and evil combat each other, where right and left struggle between themselves — they have seen only the intermediate term.
Contrariwise, those who make a monotheistic or unitary classification have perceived the central term. What I have shown you for the human foetus and for the arm applies exactly to all the organs of physical man. Let us cite one more example.
Take the endoderm, from which, as we know, our digestive apparatus proceeds. Well, the digestive tube is born and develops in the following manner: first the exterior, or the intestines (number 1); then the oesophagus, the tube that will serve for the descent of food into the stomach (number 3); and finally, between the two, the stomach (number 2). As you see, the law is always the same.
One may affirm, without fear of contradiction, that all the organs of the body, without exception, follow this law: 1, 3 and 2. Therefore, when I tell you Nature proclaims the Ternary, you understand what I mean by it — and I hope you will now understand what a Trinity is". In the next article we shall continue this interesting study of the constitution of the human being and of the forces acting in him.
Practical Course of Judicial Astrology — Teachings of Surya. S∴I∴ — Having seen the Planet Saturn in the previous number, let us examine today: JUPITER — Says J. BURGOYNE, the Rosicrucian and Author of "The Light of Egypt", quoted by PAPUS: Under his symbolic aspect we find Jupiter universally known to all the Ancients, and among the Greeks under the name of Zeus, the celestial father of all things.
In Aryan symbolism we find him represented under the name of "Universal Father of Heaven". The two conceptions, Greek and Aryan, are thus identical. In the more homely conceptions of the bold sons of the North we see Jupiter represented by Thor — whence comes the Saxon Thors-day (day of Thor) and the modern English Thursday, the day this planet rules according to tradition.
Kabbalistically, the planet Jupiter signifies etheric absorption in the Great Man. He therefore represents the sense of smell in the body of humanity. It is the sense by which the developed soul perceives and shares the subtlest aromatic essences of nature.
On the esoteric planisphere Jupiter becomes the celestial Zachariel or Zadkiel, and represents also the impartial spirit of detachment. In that quality he designates the principles and philosophy of arbitration — the perfect organisation of equilibrium by the suppression of disturbing forces.
As a symbol of the attributes of absorption, the kabbalistic authors of the Books of Moses speak of him frequently, and give us to understand that "a sweet aromatic perfume" was offered to the Lord during the sacred rites of the temple service. Considered astrologically, the planet Jupiter is the largest and, after Saturn, the most powerful of our solar system. Jupiter signifies all that is really good and charitable in human life.
His action is truly noble, far removed from the awkward timidity of Saturn or the immodest daring of Mars; the pure son of Jupiter spreads his genial warmth through the atmosphere around him. Totally incapable of deceit, he never suspects others — for which reason he is a frequent victim of their cunning and duplicity.
The nature of this planet suggests itself when we say that the Jupiterian believes every person honest until proved perverse — and even after the proof, pardons once or twice before punishing. On the intellectual Plane, Jupiter indicates a superior moral nature, the humanitarian qualities — it is he who fosters the formation of noble and charitable institutions and undertakings.
Those dominated by his influence are the expression of the highest form of human nature. There is something truly lordly, royal, in the influence of this planet — a mixture of father, patriarch and king. Such individuals do much to redeem the human race from its general depravity.
In Jupiterians will always be found, on the intellectual plane, a very acute sense of discernment, whereby they possess rare qualities of justice — and hence are given the title of Judges of the people. When they deviate, it is always towards clemency. · 10
On the physical Plane, Jupiter can bestow a high destiny if he dominates a birth. He gives a grave, virile, imposing aspect. The Jupiterian is serious, grave in conversation — but at the same time sympathetic and kindly".
The Martinist Astrologer JULEVNO teaches us that Jupiter: "Rules the liver, the left ear, the thighs, the feet, the blood and arteries, and the seed (human, animal or vegetable). Jupiter, with his well-tempered heat and moisture, dominates also the digestion, and represents the offices of the Magistracy and religion.
In his negative vibrations he produces sanguine apoplexies, scirrhi, obstructions, pleurisies, illnesses of the liver and of veins or arteries. He is also the ruler of fortune, "luck", happiness, glory, success, powerful friendships and favourable protectors. He generally bestows a jovial, generous, humane, ambitious, prudent and sympathetic character.
JUPITER DOMINATING THE BIRTH, OR WELL-DISPOSED, makes the person just, honest in thoughts and actions, virtuous, liberal, obliging, and religious in the elevated sense of the word. Jupiterians are ambitious but proud, apt for business and command. They are affable, though somewhat impetuous and choleric — keeping, however, no resentment.
They are jovial, much given to good humour and the good table, and triumph in their undertakings. JUPITER ILL-DISPOSED in a chart inclines the person to be unjust, false, unworthy of friendship, deceitful, arrogant, pretentious, immodest, lustful — one who will dissipate their patrimony. JUPITERIANS have very white skin and a fresh, rosy or high-coloured complexion.
They are robust, of medium stature, with firm and sufficient flesh. The eyes are generally large, always moist and smiling; the nose medium, straight or raised at its centre; lips medium, rather full and red, lively. The hair chestnut, generally waved and never hard.
The eyebrows well arched and generally fine. The shoulders are broad, the feet large, the hands likewise. On ageing they easily become obese and bald, on the crown as at the temples.
Special aspects apart, the Jupiterian grows stout after passing thirty years of age — at least as regards the belly". In the next article we shall treat of the planet MARS. For those Brothers who wish to form an idea of some types of Jupiterians, I shall cite from our own collectivity: Master Eliphas Levi — Jupiterian.
Master Cedaior — Jupiterian. Master Nulo — Jupiterian. Thus can Martinist students observe three types of Jupiterians — their points in common and of variation, in the physical as on the other planes. (To be continued). · 11
Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continuation). By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — GARBHASANA: This asana, rather difficult to perform owing to the complicated position of hands and legs, bears the name GARBHASANA because it resembles the position of the foetus in the maternal womb.
TECHNIQUE. — Seated on the floor, cross the legs as in Padmasana; then pass the arms between thighs and legs until these rest upon the forearms; and finally grasp the two ears with the corresponding hands, exactly as the figure indicates. It must be warned that the last phase of this asana is very difficult to perform: if sufficient care is not taken in the movement of grasping the ears, it is easy to fall backwards.
Naturally, with practice one will come to perform this asana with relative ease. BENEFITS DERIVED FROM GARBHASANA — The beneficial effects of this asana may be summed up as follows: 1) Increase of appetite. 2) Great ease of the digestive functions.
3) Perfect functioning of the intestine by normalisation of the peristaltic movements. 4) Disappearance of any and every disorder of the gastrointestinal functions. 5) Increased tonicity of the muscles of the arms, forearms, abdomen, legs, thighs and hips.
6) Increase of the flow of the various vital currents. PEACE TO ALL BEINGS — U A M [Sic: the transposed seal again] · 12
Is it possible to prolong youth? Does a Spiritual Alchemy exist capable of restoring our youth? — Causes of old age and of death. By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — We shall now begin to study whether it is possible to protect our body against various internal and external dissolving factors which, with the years, prematurely determine that state of weakening and slackness of the various tissues we call old age.
The various Hindu esoteric schools all mention five systems for attaining that end. They are: 1st physical; 2nd dietetic; 3rd respiratory; 4th mental; 5th spiritual.
To keep our organism in a perfect state of health — and consequently with a youthful aspect, good flexibility and elasticity of the tissues and normal tone of the internal organs — it is necessary to practise certain physical exercises requiring knowledge of an adequate technique; to know further which foods are suitable to permit the organism a normal metabolism leaving no impurities accumulated in the intercellular spaces and in the blood and other organic liquids; to become familiar with the secrets of breathing, with certain exercises suited to the mental life; and, finally, to lead a fitting spiritual conduct.
Some asanas (postures) are already known to the readers of our Progressive Course of Asana Yoga and, as they know, these asanas act at once upon body, soul and mind. The Yogis affirm that certain exercises, kept secret for thousands of years, can make the pranic force individualised as sexual force flow towards the nervous centres and brain, thus obtaining a re-toning and rejuvenation of the organism.
The Yogis who teach control over certain vital centres of the body demonstrate that such procedures can be accomplished by natural means, in man as in woman, without need of grafts, administration of hormonal preparations, etc. They stimulate those centres DIRECTLY, employing means that do not violate the natural laws — this technique being, in its final phase, truly a spiritual alchemy.
But for that a profound knowledge is needed of the human body and of the mysterious functional process of every organ of the whole organism. We shall now begin the study of the physical part, which may be considered a true preparatory stage for the other four, and whose end is the complete detoxification of the body. 1st PHYSICAL SYSTEM. — Old age may be considered a true progressive illness.
As we advance through the years we draw ever nearer to it, and its characteristic manifestations grow ever more evident. Manifestations owed prevalently to one cause, which consists in the · 13
progressive accumulation of inert substances in all the tissues, and especially in the walls of the veins and arteries, which thus become sclerotic. If the accumulation of these substances is not halted, other tissues will later suffer the consequences — a true deterioration being produced in them which will carry them to the loss of the elasticity characteristic of youth and the establishment of the inelasticity characteristic of old age.
To halt that accumulation, and little by little to eliminate the calcareous substances already deposited, physical exercises are needed which will be indicated in due course.
That readers may have a clear idea of what really occurs in the arteries and veins — especially the former — let them imagine the calcareous incrustations that appear in the tubes of a boiler or steam engine after a certain time, above all if the boiling water was saturated with salts. If those tubes are not cleaned they are very soon obstructed and become useless; but if the incrustations are removed they recover their original efficiency.
Exactly the same happens with the arteries — with the sole difference that, while in the example given the salts deposit on the internal surface of the tubes, in the arteries they deposit in the intercellular spaces of the walls, thus giving origin to that syndrome well known under the name of arteriosclerosis.
This characteristic senile manifestation cannot be cured by any medicinal preparation (despite the many existing for that end, among which we mention the best known: iodine), nor by any dietetic regime.
It is true that by following a dietetic regime relatively poor in certain salts — such as a very suitable and balanced vegetarian regime based on much fruit — arteriosclerosis can be avoided; but once it is established, the regime mentioned no longer suffices to eliminate the salts deposited.
Once arteriosclerosis is manifest — principally by deposit of carbonates and phosphates (a deposit that may also occur, and principally, in the gall-bladder and kidneys, giving origin to the well-known calculi) — the arteries become hard, losing their normal elasticity; and in consequence the irrigation and adequate distribution of the blood through the various organic territories becomes ever more difficult, even though the great sympathetic and the vagus nerve strive to maintain an adequate vasoconstriction or vasodilation.
Then the poor circulation gradually determines the atrophy of the various tissues, with attenuation of the organic functions and visible manifestation of all those characteristics of senility.
That is why, for example, the brain begins to function ever less intensely — confusion of ideas, loss of memory, failure of attention, etc., thus manifesting themselves, which, as is known, are prevalently manifestations of premature senility or of very advanced old age. (To be continued) · 14

T.
Srinivasachariar) — Let us continue with what that Pandit set forth, already in the previous number, on "The Work of the Hierarchy": "Thus the Hierarchy and its head are constantly engaged in the work of raising humanity — nor is the Hierarchy''s activity exclusively religious: the sciences and arts tending to the physical welfare of the race are granted from time to time to the world by the Hierarchs, whether by personal manifestation or by the inspiration of certain individuals from among men.
In fact, the work of the Hierarchy is of an importance as vast as the world; it is constant, and produces fruits of universal blessing. The manner of their work. — Among the many matters the Hierarchy attends to, one very principal is the government of the world, including the distribution of continents and civilisations. With respect to humanity, the work of the Hierarchy is of an intimate nature.
Through one of the five great systems of the preliminary initiations, an individual is admitted as an active agent to cooperate in their work, and to raise himself gradually to the level of their usefulness to humanity. For those who solicit such admission there are constructed four orders of discipleship, denominated: Dasas, Thistas, Brahmas and Anandas.
To the Dasa — the first to be received, being initiated in one of the five preliminary initiations — is given a discipline he must sustain, consisting of certain chants accompanied by mystic · 15
syllables or words of virtue, which he must intone until he reaches a determined state; after which there is imposed on him, if he so prefers, a life of absolute celibacy, during which his discipline undergoes marked changes in consonance with his progress; it is during this period that meditation begins, as an aid towards the true Raja Yoga.
That lapse past, the Hierarchs gradually confer on him the great Initiations known as the Parthiva, Vayu, Agni, Chandra, Aditya and Yoga Devi DIKSHAS. These initiations go on increasing his capacity to realise the Divinity, or the Self, in himself.
Care is taken of his diet and other conditions, so as to constitute his various bodies, dense and subtle, of matter adequate to the rhythm of intense meditation and of Yoga; during these courses the disciple is given unguents and elixirs that enable him to contend with the strain these disciplines have caused in his organism.
Often his training is carried out in secret Yogashramas, or chapels situated in the seclusion of the forests or hills, far beyond the ordinary reach of men. In time the disciple comes to be a Raja Yogi and, cooperating with the Hierarchs in the work of raising humanity, rises to the level of the Adepts and even to higher states.
It must be noted here that the seven great Initiations of which we have spoken are imparted only by Bhagavan Narayana — known also as Kumara and Dakshinamurthy — representing respectively the aspects of Maha Vishnu, Maha Brahma and Maha Siva.
Although in the outer world the act of initiation may be executed by some person duly authorised to do so, each individual initiation, when it takes place, is directly imparted under the immediate superintendence of Bhagavan Narayana in one of the three great aspects mentioned above; for obvious reasons, the physical presence of the disciple is often dispensed with on certain great occasions.
The disciplinary methods imposed by the Hierarchs of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam provide what is needed for a well-oriented though gradual advance along a sure way, and thus guard against the danger of forced development; such discipline, which facilitates a sure development, is the true Raja Yoga, and is imparted to the aspirant in conformity with the unaltered base of the ancient system, whose secret is in the exclusive custody of the Hierarchs of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam; to their prudence it is left, entirely and finally, to determine how much of the practice of the discipline may be entrusted to an aspirant.
Only they can initiate the aspirant into its mystery, and none but they can guide the disciple surely and rightly; and though progress depends on his zeal and effort, the help of the Hierarchs remains indispensable, for only they can reveal the dangers and the manner of avoiding them.
Besides conferring the initiations and formulating the special disciplines, rites and the investiture of the mystic syllables for each particular type of men, the Hierarchs facilitate the realisation of the Divinity in man by revealing the ancient science whose custody was entrusted to them.
Transcendent Psychology (The End). Wronski, A∴M∴ — As we see, the unconscious embraces an extraordinarily vast field of manifestation, containing some phenomena and properties which C. P. ignores, or at least does not cite in its teachings.
To place himself at the adequate angle of focus, the reader will find himself obliged to accept, if only by way of inventory, a series of metaphysical postulates essential within the psychological system we expound. It would however be an error on our part to present these doctrinal postulates in the dogmatic form in which the authors of the past did — moved, surely, by a deep respect for the tradition that gave them origin.
The man of our time — found at the turn of any corner, imbued with a series of general knowledge popularised by very many authors of great narrative and dialectical capacity — has not time enough to study deeply a problem that escapes vulgar penetration.
But if the essence of the matter to which one wishes to call his attention is set out for him in a logical and attractive manner — principally starting from facts known or unknown — then it is probable the end pursued will be attained.
We said elsewhere, and find its repetition timely now, that attention possesses, like a material body, a specific capacity for action; but we shall add that this capacity transforms into "usable work" — that is, "kinetic energy" — whenever a sufficiently powerful force manages to overcome the inertia of the object to which it is applied. The force that overcomes the inertia of unconscious or involuntary attention is "originality".
But a body solicited by a force that has broken its static equilibrium — that has overcome its inertia — will not maintain its velocity and direction unless that force continues to act during the time of the movement. Continuing the parallelism, we shall say that the force which maintains the velocity and direction of voluntary or conscious attention is interest.
From which it follows that the attention we can concentrate on a given thing stands in close relation with the interest the thing provokes. In accord with the preceding conclusion, we shall enter into matter with an observation interesting to the reader — at least we hope so. Let us imagine for an instant that we are in an amphitheatre.
On a table of white marble we contemplate the rigid quietness of a naked cadaver. Leaving aside the multiple reflections the solemnity of the scene awakens, let us fix our mind on this particular idea: what causes have determined the serene, cold immobility of that · 17
human form? Common sense — not always the most common of the senses — will answer without hesitating: Life.
Nevertheless, if we think a little, what that form lacks, at the instant we perceive it, cannot be Life (written thus with a capital, and in the attributive extension general consent gives it); for were it so we should have separated from the universal concept, Life, a part that is no longer Life — in other words, we should stand before a form separated from Life.
Now: either Life is a universal attribute or it is not; if it is, no form can be deprived of life; if it is not, then it must be explained why some contain it and others do not. Such a privilege, if it exists, deserves to be explained. We prefer to escape the dilemma by making the synthesis of its opposed terms.
It is the transcendent procedure which, by convention between the reader and ourselves, led us on other occasions to establish the conceptual sphere of the psychology we are commenting. Positive premise: Life is universal and animates all forms. Negative premise: Life is universal, but animates only some forms.
Neutral premise: Forms are all expressions of life; and the fact of appreciating it in this or that form is due to our associating life with movement. We thus arrive at the true nerve of the matter: what is lacking in the cadaver is not precisely life, but movement — a modality of life, not its ultimate essence.
The bond of union between the apparent inertia of the physical body and that which animates and vivifies it is called the etheric body; the energy whose vehicle is the etheric body, the astral body or plastic mediator; what acts upon the plastic mediator is the mental.
The mind constitutes in its turn a new element of linkage between what dies and what can attain immortality — the soul; which in its turn is a manifestation of the one and immortal spirit that works in all these illusory divisions without being any of them. The complete exposition of each of the elements cited would carry us too far, and moreover exceeds our possibilities.
We prefer to leave the commentary to those who, better informed than ourselves, will be able to make it with the required precision of ideas. We wish however to add a few words expressing our feeling or — if the reader permits us — our philosophical position before the profound teachings of C. P. · 18
The arcana of the human soul cannot be unveiled by any psychology. Be it C. P. or T.
P., both — on the ground they tread, and having regard to the end they pursue — are mere waymarks set along the route of understanding: able to orient our incessant search, but powerless to define, connote and demonstrate the inner essence of the I. Absurd as it may appear at first sight, knowledge of the I is obtained not by the function of thinking (the characteristic modality of the psychological method) but in the function of not thinking.
Said otherwise: the I is knowable not by intellectual discernment but by meditation, which escapes the psychological teachings. In meditation, the images contained in the astral light of the Martinists are, so to speak, captured by the subconscious mind and filed — metaphorically speaking — in a very special pigeon-hole of what we call memory.
Now, the combination of these images — each of which represents a fact lived by the soul across its different incarnations — produces, or better, excites a chain of associations in which consciousness goes little by little recognising itself in the past, understanding itself in the present, and presaging itself in the future.
A great master of occultism has said that in man everything is mortal — but adds that it lies in man''s power to attain immortality. Meditation presupposes this possibility and seeks to attain it by a special technique whose supreme consequence is ecstasy. The division between the higher manas and the lower manas — in other words, the abstract mind and the concrete mind — represents the axis around which the mortal and the immortal turn.
In the normal or waking state, the mortal maintains a velocity directly proportional and opposed to the immortal. Meditation can conjugate these velocities, fusing the one with the other. Mental alchemy — the Azoth of the hermetists, the potable and perfect gold — is attained by this transmutation of the conscious into the superconscious (the unconscious of C.
P.), that is, of the mortal into the immortal. The common agent of this transformation is once more that vital or astral light, upon which the conscious and the unconscious act — to project and dynamise the mental contents, and to receive and coagulate the mnemonic effects.
Light conserves and produces forms, maintains the rhythm of the universe, magnetises beings, serves as nexus between worlds and beings — and is therefore the bond of union between minds. Our limited horizons stop here.
The reader who aspires to greater knowledge will find it in the works of Ramacharaka, Besant, Osly, Mulford, Fortuni, Richet — and, reading with attention, also in those of Eliphas Levi, Papus, Sédir, Barlet, Castellot, Agrippa, etc., etc. · 19
· 20 [The page is a full-page plate: GURU NANAK, FOUNDER OF SIKHISM — see the figure in the imagery layer.]
Origins of the Sikh Tradition. By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — This article is dedicated to the very dear friend JIT SINGH, Prince of Kapurtala, whose presence in Argentina reminds us of beloved India and makes us feel the perfume of her millennial Wisdom.
ALL RELIGIONS, WHEN THEY ARE PROFESSED WITH PURE MIND AND HEART AND THE SOUL FREE OF SELFISHNESS AND SEPARATIVITY, BRING US NEAR TO GOD; FOR THEY EXPRESS THE TRUTH AND THE LIGHT OF THE UNIVERSAL WISDOM THROUGH DIFFERENT VESTURES AND LANGUAGES. FOR THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO LIVE THE TRUTH OF ANY ONE OF THEM, ALL OF THEM EXPRESS A SINGLE REALITY, OMNISCIENT AND OMNIPRESENT: WHAT IS, AND SHALL BE — GOD. Asuri Kapila.
Sikhism is one of the seven principal religions of the world, whose faithful reside for the most part in the Punjab, a province situated in the north-west of India. The founder of this religion was the great Guru Nanak — called also, affectionately, by his disciples Baba Nanak — a revered spiritual chief born at Talwandi, in the district of Lahore, in the month of November 1469.
Another tradition gives Nanak''s birth in the month of Vaishakh (April-May). This religion arose from the bosom of Hinduism at the voice of its founder, with the intent of uniting Hindus and Muslims in a common bond of love of God and neighbour. Nanak belonged to the caste of the Khatris; and on the religious side, the movement produced by Kabir made its influence felt strongly in him.
Nanak led for some time a wandering life; familiar with the Hindi and Persian languages, he lived in close contact with Hindu and Mohammedan Masters. He composed hymns which he sang accompanied by his faithful disciple Mardana. Thus he succeeded in gathering a number of disciples, arranging for them a collection of verses known by the name of Japji — most of them in praise of God, for the daily prayers.
On religion he held a point of view similar to Kabir''s, saying that God is One, Eternal and spiritual, and must be adored with the heart. According to him caste did not exist, for all can know and love God. In his writings he makes many allusions to the laws of Karma, to belief in reincarnation, and to the deceiving and illusory forces of Maya — giving also much importance to the necessity of having a Guru (Spiritual Master).
Nanak''s father was called Kalu, and his mother Tripta. Like Zoroaster, Nanak seemed to have been born smiling. Many stories are told of his intelligent precocity and, though that marvellous child rapidly absorbed knowledge, he soon abandoned his studies, saying to his schoolmaster: "I prefer to study the Divine Wisdom". · 21
Like all the great religious reformers he went into the forests and listened to the teachings of the Sages and Gurus who, in those times, abounded in India in more visible and accessible form. From them he learned much — Nanak having at 14 an erudition and education many times superior to any boy of his age.
The hour of marriage having come, he married the daughter of a resident of Batala in the district of Gurdaspur, called Safakhani, who gave him two sons, called Shri Chand and Laksmidas. Nanak''s father was eager to see his son settle into ordinary life to build himself a future, and after much difficulty persuaded him to become a trader — giving Nanak one day money to buy merchandise in the city for his business.
On the way, Nanak, meeting some hungry anchorites, gave them all his money so they might buy food. This gesture already showed Nanak''s tender heart, filled with love and pity for those who suffer want. When he returned home without money and without merchandise, his exasperated father pulled his ears roughly and scolded him with much severity.
Nanak, wounded by that cruel paternal reproof, left home. He became steward to the Governor of Sultanpur for a time; then began to travel.
On the way of his long journey he met a well-known and famous robber called Sheik Safjan, who had built, to attract travellers, a Temple that was at once Hindu and Muslim; endowed with great tact, he knew how to impress the unwary travellers who passed that way and — once they had given themselves to rest — killed and robbed them, throwing their bodies afterwards into a well nearby.
But in vain did Sheik Safjan try to deceive the Divine intelligence of Nanak. With the speed of thought, the wickedness and the premeditated criminal action that was to unfold against Nanak was broken; and the defeated robber was converted and begged pardon on his knees.
He was then obliged to distribute among the poor the whole fortune he possessed, fruit of robbery — Sheik Safjan becoming in the end an ascetic, showing once more the marvellous and holy influence of Nanak. The Doctrine of Nanak is synthesised in the following words: "There is one God whose name is true, the Creator, exempt from fear and enmity, immortal, self-existent, great and beautiful.
The true Being was in the Beginning; the true Being was in the primal age. The true Being Is, Was, and ever Shall Be". Nanak condemned orthodox Hinduism with great vigour, especially at Vrindavan, Mathura and Puri.
After wandering through all India, Afghanistan and Ceylon, he resolved to go to Mecca — a difficult thing in that epoch, the journey being surrounded by dangers of every kind. He dressed suitably for the purpose in the garb of a Muslim pilgrim, carrying a staff, a cup for his ablutions, and a small carpet for his prayers.
A faithful disciple of Nanak, Mardana, wished to share with his Master the dangers of that hazardous journey towards the great adventure; and after many hardships Nanak and Mardana reached Mecca. Owing to their ignorance of the customs reigning there, they met tremendous difficulties of every kind.
his World". "I have consulted the four Vedas, but their writings do not find the limits of God". "I have consulted the four books of the Muslims, but the work of God is not written in them".
"I, Nanak, say that man must be truthful in his Faith, if he fears God and does good work"… From Mecca Nanak went to Medina and, from Medina, to Baghdad; and there he joined in the prayer with great veneration, but substituted words of his own in one prayer, saying: "Mahomed Ali Rassul Allah" (Mahomet is the Prophet of God, and not God). Nanak''s fervour drew the attention of the high priests of Baghdad, who asked him to what sect he belonged.
Nanak answered: "I have appeared in this age to show the Way to men; I reject all sects; I know only one God, whom I recognise in the Earth, in the Heavens and in all directions"… The high priest grew angry, believing these the words of a heretic. Nanak would have fared very ill had he not decided to flee to India across the Persian Gulf. After a brief stay at Multan, Nanak and his disciple Mardana went to Kartarpur.
There the faithful Mardana fell ill and died suddenly. As he passed for a Muslim, the difficult problem arose of how to dispose of the mortal remains of the one who had been his faithful and kindly disciple and companion of adventures. Nanak had become Sikh (that is, divinely taught) and knew God; he had become the equal of a Brahmin — and so the body of Mardana was given to the waters of the River Ravi. Kabala - Yoga y Síntesis Rosacruz Por JEHEL.

Asuri Kapila.
