The Venerable Figure of Master Cedaior (4th article). By JEHEL. S∴I∴ — In the preceding article we saw that Cedaior had made a long journey to the Andean Cordillera, an attempt at an "Olympic Colony" to be sited near Nahuel-Huapi having failed.
Cedaior returns, then, to Buenos Aires, where his son Jehel was — who for some years already had been an assistant to the Master. At that period — 1921 — Cedaior takes a resolution most characteristic of those who trust entirely that "everything is always fulfilled as it must be realised".
He definitively abandons his "city" activity and prepares for a new journey through the region of the Pampa and the Andean region, which was afterwards to bring him to fix his residence at Mendoza.
On leaving Buenos Aires he leaves his rare disciples to follow, or not, the road he has opened; and he leaves his own eldest son, Jehel, in full liberty to follow the "normal life" — that is, to make himself a "brilliant" commercial and civil situation — or to follow the rough Road of realisation.
Cedaior does not even have that paternal and human "egoism" of trying to carry his own son with him or towards his ideal — although the son had already for some years been strongly interested in initiatic things.
Before leaving, however, he puts Jehel in contact with a German Rosicrucian, a doctor of philosophy and letters, member of several Academies, who has abandoned everything to lead the life of a wandering Yogi on the South American Continent.
That Initiate, very elevated, answered in civil life to the name of Walter Bauer; with his long hair to the waist and his golden beard he had a mystical aspect which the purity of his great blue eyes, transparent as a child's, completed admirably.
He might have been, at that time, some thirty-five years old, and had been chaste from birth — which already indicates a very evolved being, since physically he was of a rare perfection of form, proportion and beauty.
Cedaior arrives, then, at the beginning of 1922 at Mendoza, where he meets Jehel, who has already arrived after a long journey of months on foot, following Walter Bauer, leading a life like that of the oriental Sannyasins: always on foot, sleeping in the open despite the frosts, and eating what nature offers or what charity grants the traveller.
Walter Bauer, from a certain point of the itinerary, followed another course, on which he wished to be accompanied by no one. It seems opportune to say that from the little — very little — that Bauer said, it would emerge that one of the objects of his mission was to serve as a "point of irradiation" for certain currents of spiritual force that were beginning to fix themselves in the southern part of Argentina.
BETH: Signo paternal y viril.
At Mendoza, using their possibilities as teachers of language and music, Cedaior and Jehel make studies in seismology; and in that period many earthquakes of importance — such as the great earthquake of Japan, that of Bolivia which almost destroyed the most important buildings of La Paz, and that of San Rafael in Mendoza, not counting many others of lesser importance — are predicted with an exactness that draws the attention of several persons around the Master, and an enthusiastic group begins to take interest in founding at Mendoza a Colony such as Cedaior had projected from before, as we have seen.
It having been possible also for Cedaior to save the life of the then Governor of Mendoza, Dr. Lencinas, by an anticipated warning of a plot he discovered through clairvoyance, a certain official protection is given the Master; and a little later they offer to give him a great part of the beautiful valley of the Sonda to establish his colonisation — but one of the conditions is to wait almost two years for the provincial government to carry out the canalisation works that would permit the irrigation of the valley.
Cedaior — now alone, for Jehel has left for France on a special mission to retake contact with the Traditional Orders (Martinism, the Kabbalistic Rose-Cross, and Les Veilleurs) — resolves not to wait so long and, together with some friends and disciples, among whom we shall recall the faithful Yanacaré, they resolve to buy a piece of land in the San Rafael zone to establish the first Colony.
It is at this moment that an event occurs of enormous importance, for it will change the Master's whole life and realisation. Cedaior had been for years already in correspondence with the Initiate Ida Hoffman, known in the Initiatic Orders as "Sor Peregrina" for having been the most intimate collaborator of Reuss (Fra Peregrino), the successor of Rodolfo Steiner.
Ida Hoffman (Rosicrucian, co-Mason, Member of the Ordo Templi Orientis — O.T.O.) had obtained by correspondence Cedaior's promise to collaborate with her, should she come to the South American Continent, in forming an Olympic and Naturist Colony; for Ida Hoffman knew such organisations well, having been the intimate collaborator of Henri Ocdenkóven, the founder of the celebrated naturist sanatorium-colony of "Monte Venus", situated near Ascona.
We shall return to this personage later. Cedaior, slave of his word, receives — on the very day he was going to sign the deed of purchase for the land of the Mendoza colony — a letter from Ida Hoffman announcing that she was already in Brazil, that she had already bought land there, and that she awaited him according to the agreement between them.
No road remains to Cedaior, then, but to depart for Brazil; and leaving his few companions of Mendoza to realise what had been projected, according to his teachings, he leaves for Brazil by way of Buenos Aires, in which city he has a rapid and final contact with his remaining faithful disciples — among them Sra. Rosa de Robinson, already cited, and Dr. Miguel Angel Márquez, of whom we shall speak again in due course.
(L. letra 12a, vale 30). (La Caridad; la Gracia; la Experiencia adquirida, Saber; la Fuerza equilibrante). MEN: Signo maternal y femenino.
quarters". Fertile lands, of a surface of 120 hectares, have been bought 40 kilometres from the city, in a broken and picturesque place of the Palmital, the colony being called "Monte Sol".
The works begin, and a young German (Tuttenhof) takes charge of overseeing the first rice plantings and timber cuttings of the Colony's woodland; but he proceeds without judgement and only abuses the hospitality of Ida and Cedaior — who works day and night, with lessons and playing in orchestras, even café orchestras, to sustain the incipient Colony.
It is well to bear in mind that Ida Hoffman was some 60 years of age and Cedaior 51 at that period; that both were Europeans, of cold climates, and made this effort in a place of subtropical climate, with an admirable enthusiasm and spirit of sacrifice. As both are vegetarians, they resist the climate more easily in the city; but in the Colony the malarial fever, endemic in that region, has already made itself felt.
Before leaving this period, it is well to cite a notable fact for those who know how to observe how, "from above", we are constantly guided. When Cedaior was at Mendoza, a German pastor, a well-known writer, the Rev. Wilhelm Brephol — married to a sister of Ida Hoffman, but having no relation, not even by letter, with Cedaior — had already sent his enormous library by parcel post to Mendoza, where he wished to fix his residence.
When Cedaior leaves Mendoza, simultaneously and without there being, apparently, powerful reasons for it, Pastor Brephol changes his mind, has the thousands of books sent to Mendoza returned, and begins proceedings with the Churches he represents as a Missionary to be sent to Brazil — which will come to pass in 1925.
We shall see later the importance of this change, indisputably ordered by those who constantly guide our steps, even when we are not always — indeed not often — conscious of it, unless we are either illumined or minutely observant. (To be continued) · 6
Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism — The Hebrew Alphabet (Continuation) — Teachings of Jehel, S∴I∴ — In the two preceding articles of this course, the Venerable Brother Sévaka set forth the result of his investigations into the reason of the order of the 22 letters of the primitive Hebrew alphabet, and the elevated mystical sense that could be drawn from its meditation and comprehension.
It now falls to us, to complete this subject as regards the first degree of the Martinist teaching, to give the sense of the first letters as we need to know it kabbalistically — so as to apply that knowledge to the study of the tarot and of the Hebrew kabbalistic tradition, which precedes the study we shall have to make later of the oriental kabbalah and, later still, of the synthetic one: the protosynthesis, as the Master Saint-Yves d'Alveydre justly called it.
The Marquis de Saint-Yves d'Alveydre (the intellectual Master of Papus) declares that the patient studies — they lasted 40 years — which an earlier Martinist, the Master Fabre d'Olivet, made of the primitive Hebrew or Aramaic language, derived in great part from the secret language of the Egyptian Temples, were of the highest use to him.
According to Fabre d'Olivet's text in "La Langue Hébraïque Restituée", the meaning we must attribute to the 22 signs of the Hebrew Alphabet is the following: ALEF: Sign of Power and Stability. The ideas it expresses are those of Unity and of the Principle that determines it. (God the Father, Osiris; Adam; the Active Universe, Naturing Nature, Kether, A, I, Iod.) BETH: Paternal and virile sign.
Image of interior and active action (Reflection of God the Father: God the Son — Isis — Reflection of Adam: Eve. Reflection of Naturing Nature: Natured Nature, 2, B, Chocmah).
GHIMEL: This character offers the image of a Canal; it is the organic sign, or the material envelopment, and of all ideas deriving from the corporeal organs and their action. (God the Holy Spirit, Horus, the Universal Animating Force; Adam-Eve: Humanity, the World, G, 2, Vau, Binah.) · 7
DALETH: Sign of Nature divisible and divided. It expresses every current of abundance born of division. (The Will; Power; the universal creative Fluid, the Soul of the Universe, D, 3, Chesed.) HE: Life, and every abstract idea of being. (Pechad or Gueburah, Intelligence — Authority, religion, Faith — Universal Life — H or E, 5.) VAF or VAU: This character offers the image of the deepest and most inconceivable mystery.
The image of the knot that unites, or of the point that separates, nothingness and being.
It is the universal convertible sign, the sign that makes one pass from one nature to another — communicating on one side with the sign of Light and of the spiritual sense (Vaf with point), which is only itself raised higher, and on the other, in its degeneration, with the sign of darkness and of the material sense, Hain or Whain, which is only itself, lowered. (Tiphereth, Beauty; Love, Charity; Universal Attraction or Universal Love — V, 6.) ZAIN: Demonstrative sign, abstract image of the bond uniting things.
Symbol of luminous refraction. (Hod, the father, the realiser; realisation; the Astral Light; Z, S, C, 7.) HETH: This character, intermediate between Hé and Caf — which designate, the one, life, absolute existence, and the other, relative life, assimilated existence — is the sign of elemental existence.
It offers the image of a kind of equilibrium, and is bound to the ideas of effort, of labour, and of normal and legislative action. (The mother; Justice; elemental existence; Netzah; Ch, 8.) THETH: Sign of resistance and of protection.
This character serves as a bond between Zain and Thau, which are, the one and the other, much more expressive than it. (Human Love, Yesod; prudence, the astral fluid, natural conserving force, T, 9.) IOD: Image of potential manifestation, of the eternity of times, and of all the ideas referring thereto.
This character, notable in its vocal nature, loses all its qualities in the consonant state, in which it no longer represents anything but a material duration — a kind of bond like Zain, or of movement like Shin. (Malkuth, Necessity, Karma; magical power, Fortune, willing, Force in power of manifestation, I, J, Y, 10th letter, value 10.) CAPH or CAF: Assimilative sign.
It is a reflected and transient life, a kind of mould, which receives and returns all forms. It derives from the character Heth (or Jeth), which in its turn derived from the sign of absolute life: Hé.
Thus, bound on one side to elemental life, it unites the meaning of the character Hé with that of the sign Ghimel, of which it is, finally, only a kind of augmentative reinforcement. (Liberty; Courage; reflected and transient life; C, K, KH, 11th letter, value 20.) LAMED: Sign of expansive movement. It applies to all ideas of extension, of elevation, of occupation, of possession.
As a final, it is the image of the power that results from elevation. (L, 12th letter, value 30.) (Charity; Grace; acquired Experience, Knowing; the equilibrating Force.) MEM: Maternal and feminine sign. Local and plastic sign, image of exterior and passive action. This character, employed at the end of words, becomes a collective sign.
destroyer and creator; Death; the universal plastic force; M, 13th letter, value 40.) NUN: Image of the produced or reflected being. Sign of individual and corporeal existence.
As a final character it is the augmentative sign, and gives the word that receives it all the individual extension of which the thing expressed is susceptible. (Involution, Spirit descending towards matter; Temperance; individual and corporeal life; N, 14th letter, value 50.) SAMECH: Image of every circumscription. Sign of circular movement as regards its circumferential limit.
It is the bond Zain, reinforced and folded back upon itself. (Destiny and chance; Fatality, result of the "fall" — Nahash, the guardian of the threshold; S, 15th letter, value 60.) GNAIN or HWAIN: Sign of the material sense. It is the sign VAF or Vau considered in its purely physical relations.
When the sound Hwain degenerates in its turn into a consonant, it becomes the sign of all that is crooked, false, perverse and evil. (Divine destruction; the Fall; the visible world; WH, O, H, 16th letter, value 70.) PHE, FE or PE: Sign of the word, and of all that relates to it. This character serves as a bond between the characters Beth and Vaf.
When the latter has passed to the consonant state, it shares all its meanings, adding to them its own expression, which is emphasis. (Immortality; hope; the force that dispenses the fluids; Ph, P or F — 17th letter, value 80.) (To be continued) — Note: Besides the sense given by Fabre d'Olivet, we have added in parentheses the correspondence of the Principles of the three Worlds — Divine, Human, Natural — as well as the corresponding Latin letter and the numerical value of the Hebrew letter.
Practical Course of Judicial Astrology (Continuation) — Teachings of Surya, S∴I∴ — THE LORD OF LIFE: As we promised in the preceding article, we shall give the rules for determining the so-called "Lord of Life" — the Planet which, in a given horoscope, indicates the subject's vitality; that "lord of life" planet received the name HYLEG or APHETA in Arab and traditional astrology, and it is well to know and keep especially the denomination "hyleg", which relates to very esoteric teachings.
The first significators of life are the "luminaries" — especially the Sun in a diurnal birth and the Moon in a nocturnal one; for it has been observed that if the Sun gives life to all that exists and presides over the vivifying warmth that animates us, the Moon on the other hand presides over the formation of all the parts of the body.
For that reason the title of "giver of life", or HYLEG according to the Arabs, can be granted only to one of these two planets. Nevertheless, these planets can hold that office really and efficiently only when standing in important houses, above the horizon or near to it. The houses fulfilling these conditions are the Xth, Ist, VIIth and IXth.
Outside these houses, the Sun and Moon no longer fulfil the conditions for the power of determining the duration of the individual existence.
In default of those planets in the necessary conditions, the very degree of the Ascending Sign will be considered "hyleg"; and to assure a "medium-normal" duration of life in the human being it must stand free of strong bad aspects from the so-called "malefics", or from the dominant planets (Lords) of the house of death (8th) or of illnesses (6th and at times 12th).
We may sum up all this in practice, with the details the Tradition offers, in the following rules for determining the Hyleg, apheta or "Lord of Life". 1st) [Sic: the retype sets the figure with a capital I, "Io"] When in a natal chart the Sun stands in houses X, I, XI, VII or IX, it will be considered hyleg.
2nd) If the Sun occupies none of those places of the Chart, but the Moon instead fulfils the preceding condition, she must be considered hyleg. 3rd) When neither the Sun nor the Moon meets the conditions of situation required for the "hyleg" state, the point of the East — that is, the Degree of the Sign occupying the Ascendant — will be the chart's "hyleg".
The famous Martinist astrologer JULEVNO observes that good results are obtained by following the practice counselled by a modern master of Astrology — Raphael — who declares it enough to take the SUN as hyleg in men's charts and the MOON as hyleg in feminine charts; for that master claims his experience has shown him that death never supervenes without the Sun in a masculine horoscope, or the Moon in a feminine one, having been gravely afflicted by the rays of the malefics. · 10
This affirmation of Raphael's may be taken as a complement to the traditional teaching, and our students can make their own observations; for it is natural, logical and in accord with the esoteric teaching that the SUN should be of preponderant influence over masculine beings and the Moon over feminine ones. THE LORD OF DEATH. The planet occupying that office in a chart is known traditionally by the denomination "anereta" or "interfector".
In modern times only the two denominations "anereta" and "Lord of Death" have been kept.
The rules serving for its determination, and for the circumstances of death — including the factors that can delay or avert that death at a given period if the person fulfils certain "possibilities" of their chart — are extremely complex and have never been revealed completely; for to do so would not only place in the hands of the general public the possibility of knowing the time of death, which many are not able to bear.
So too, others would take selfish advantage of such a datum, studying the duration of the life of persons from whose death they hope to be benefited in some way. Moreover, the complete knowledge of these laws, in their higher details, would imply the possibility of reading in the stars what is written in the "karmic book" — which has not yet been permitted to the mass.
The publishable rules are therefore of a general order, and permit determining only a "probability" of the duration of life, which the calculations of "directions" can make more precise, but hardly infallible. We shall return to this subject when it falls to us to study higher or esoteric astrology.
The current rules of judicial astrology for determining the "anereta" or Lord of Death in a chart may be summed up as verifying the conditions — at least one of them — that the planet must meet to be considered as exercising that office. They are: 1st) [Sic: the retype sets the figure with a capital I, "Io"] That it dominate, by body (presence) or by powerful aspect, the point (or cusp) of the VIIIth House. 2nd) That it be Lord of that 8th House.
3rd) That it stand in conjunction with the Lord of the VIIIth, being by nature more "malefic" than he. 4th) That it dispose of the planet present in the VIIIth House (that is, that it occupy the Sign of which the planet present in the 8th is the natural Lord. Example: Mercury in the 8th and Mars in Virgo (which is a Mercurial sign); or that the said dispositor planet be dispositor of a planet casting powerful aspects into the 8th House.
5th) If two planets held equivalent conditions — by the preceding rules — for the office of Lord of Death, preference will evidently be given to the more "malefic" of them; or, if neither were "malefic", to the one having less affinity with the "hyleg" planet (here we see the importance of knowing the planetary "friendships" and "enmities").
With these rules — very general, as we said — our students can already determine, with sufficient exactness, the Lord of Death of the charts they have occasion to construct. · 11
FORTUNATE DAY — A person is considered to have, as the most fortunate day of the week, the day ruled by the Planet ruling the Zodiacal Sign in which the Moon stands in their natal chart. This can be summed up very clearly as follows: MOON in ARIES, favourable day: TUESDAY. TAURUS, favourable day: FRIDAY.
GEMINI, favourable day: WEDNESDAY. CANCER, favourable day: MONDAY. LEO, favourable day: SUNDAY.
VIRGO, favourable day: MERCURY [Sic: the retype sets the planet where the day — Wednesday — belongs]. LIBRA, favourable day: VENUS [Sic: for Friday]. SCORPIO, favourable day: TUESDAY.
SAGITTARIUS, favourable day: THURSDAY. CAPRICORN, favourable day: SATURDAY. AQUARIUS, favourable day: SATURDAY.
PISCES, favourable day: THURSDAY. It remains for us to examine, before entering upon the interpretation of charts, the manner of determining the favourable Colours, numbers, perfumes and metals for each chart. That is what we shall do in our next article. (To be continued) · 12

Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continuation). By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — SUPTA VAJRASANA — The asana we present to our readers in this number is called SUPTA VAJRASANA. The peoples of the East consider it a posture of great efficacy — especially the Muslims, who practise it daily in their prayers.
Figure 13! [Sic: the retype garbles the figure caption — "Ff^ra 13!"] SUPTA VAJRASANA — TECHNIQUE — First movement. Kneel down, sit upon the heels, keeping the trunk well erect, and rest the hands upon each knee. Second movement.
Then lean the trunk slowly backwards until lying with the back upon the floor, and rest the head upon both arms as figure 12 indicates. Third movement. In the position indicated, take three breaths — inhaling, retaining and exhaling slowly, without effort.
When the practice of this asana is begun, pains will be felt in the knees and heels owing to the effort the respective joints must make; but little by little they will disappear — especially if, after finishing the exercise, those joints are massaged. The time one remains in SUPTA VAJRASANA may always be increased, until one can stay whole hours in that position.
BENEFITS DERIVED FROM SUPTA VAJRASANA — 1st [Sic: the retype sets the figure with a capital I, "Io"]: Toning of the muscles of the legs, thighs, abdomen, thorax, spinal column, neck and arms. 2nd: Greater amplitude in the movements of the joints of the ankles, knees, and the intervertebral joints.
3rd: Toning of the internal organs, especially the abdominal ones, with consequent disappearance of intestinal gases and regularisation of the digestive functions. · 13

Is it possible to prolong youth? Does the Spiritual Alchemy exist that can restore our youth to us? Causes of old age and of death.
By Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ — Already in number 12 of LA INICIACION we said that to prolong life and man's youthful state was, in the Western conception, "to restore to the individual his sexual faculties, acquired at the expense of animals", by grafts or the administration of hormones.
In number 13 of LA INICIACIÓN we added that those grafts and hormones restore to the human organism, and only for too brief a time, that sexual force which translates into renewed vigour — considering those means, moreover, anti-evolutive and therefore anti-natural, since they definitively suppress the vital energy of certain animals so that it may be temporarily used in men.
We said, finally, that the injection of testicular or ovarian extracts of animals, or the transplanting of those organs, could produce only a transitory effect: because, with the ending of the hormones' temporary action, the organism found itself again in want of them; or because, in the case of transplant, the glandular organs — finding themselves in a totally unsuitable terrain, namely that constituted by human tissues — atrophied little by little, and with the atrophy came the ceasing of their secretory function.
In effect, the morphological constitution and the physico-chemical composition of the constituents of the cellular protoplasm (water, mineral salts, proteins and carbohydrates) being different among the various animal species, and especially between the animal kingdom and man — differences that translate into vital vibrations of different wavelength — and the human wavelength being, as is known from the experiments of Charles Henry, 9 microns 48, and variable from tissue to tissue, those transplanted animal organs, nourished thenceforth by human blood (whose wavelength differs from that of the blood of the animal to which those organs belonged) and in a milieu whose vital vibrations are of a different tonic from the animal organ's, could not find themselves in the best conditions of life.
Consequently, after a relatively brief period of ever-decreasing secretory activity, those organs had fatally and completely to atrophy, and to be considered and treated as true foreign bodies in the human tissue medium. · 14
That is why the various experiments begun in 1889 with Brown-Séquard, and continued afterwards by other experimenters, could lead to no lasting result, much less a definitive one.
In effect, Brown-Séquard communicated to the Society of Biology of Paris in 1889, in a memorable session, the marvellous results obtained upon himself by injections of animal testicular extract — an extract which was said to have produced in the great physiologist, then 73 years old, a kind of rejuvenation of the organism.
From then on the method of Brown-Séquard, and organotherapy, entered the scientific world after much criticism and controversy.
But if the results obtained by Brown-Séquard were not those he promised himself — for despite the injections of those extracts he died 4 years later — his experiments nevertheless served to open new horizons to medicine, allowing it to study the physiological action of the glands of internal secretion and to create modern Endocrinology.
The extracts of the sexual organs not having given the hoped-for results, Steinach thought that instead of injecting animal hormones, a greater production of hormones could be obtained in the man himself by ligating the vas deferens.
This operation — having as its aim to provoke the degeneration and disappearance of the spermatozoa and of the spermatids from which the spermatozoa derive, and in compensation to obtain a hypertrophy of the interstitial tissue of the testicle — the greater quantity of hormone produced by that tissue, passing into the blood, was to have delayed or attenuated the manifestations of old age and produced a certain rejuvenation.
There is no doubt that Steinach's conception marked a great step in the solution of the problem, for it eliminated completely the action of extra-human and therefore unsuitable hormones; but contrary to his forecasts there was no hypersecretion of the masculine hormone, nor consequently the desired rejuvenating effects.
And lastly we mention the attempt made by Woronoff [Voronoff] to transplant into man the testicles of the monkey (this animal being the nearest to man). This attempt likewise could not give the desired results, for the reasons set out above — that is, because it was a heteroplastic graft.
We could greatly lengthen this article by relating other theories and hypotheses — for example, the supposed revival of the glands by the heat produced by diathermy, the use of injections of testicular blood from the spermatic vein of the bull, etc. — but we believe what has been set out is more than enough to make clear that it is absolutely impossible and absurd, because anti-natural, to seek in the endocrine cause a permanent revitalisation of the sexual energies, much less a factor of rejuvenation.
Even if we admit that the sexual functions, in the man who has reached the gate of old age, may for a time produce a strong hormonal stimulus, it would be completely erroneous to consider this fact a proof of rejuvenation. At most one could speak of a small delay in a certain function; but the whole organism remains as old as before.

If sexual activity has always been considered — by the common run and by the learned alike — the most beautiful prerogative of youth, science has the duty of rectifying the arbitrary affirmations of that conception: a joyful and beautiful life can be enjoyed with health of body and serenity of spirit even when the erotic activity is completely extinguished.
In the next article we shall see how youth is in reality maintained by exclusively natural means — means that permit not only the dynamising of the sexual energy but above all a true revitalisation of all the tissues and humours, of which revitalisation the sexual energy itself is one expression.
And we shall bring into evidence that the causes of premature old age (not the completely natural physiological kind), be they physiological, emotional or mental, are exactly those which gradually destroy the various physiological mechanisms, provoke accentuated disequilibria in them, and consequently prevent the constant maintenance in the organism of an adequate vital energy.
There is, then, a numerical increase of 4 disciples in activity, and progress too in the number of those attaining better realisations. The Practical Method of the Suddha Dharma Mandalam.
This method, as the literature of the S.D.M. clearly says, rests on the fact that a "synthesis of Yoga" is possible — that is, that instead of consecrating years [Typographical error in the source, where text was lost] -ing, by these changes and by what the exercises themselves determine in one's way of feeling life and beings, we shall be assured that one must really be progressively transmuted, to the point of feeling really united to the Higher.
Arrived there, the fundamental step is taken — whether one has obtained visions, convictions or real ecstasies: that depends on the sincerity, the care and, especially, the end pursued in following the practices.
If one has been balanced in one's practices and if one's end was really elevated — that is, unselfish, not aimed at "being more than others" or "seeing extraordinary things"; if, on the contrary, one's longing is only to "become more sensitive" to a Higher direction, accepted ever more deeply because ever more sensibly perceived in the practice itself — then one's efforts will be guided so that one may really attain that "synthesis of Yoga" which, in our Western language, might be compared to the possibility, affirmed by all the Masters, of the union of good and actively well-intentioned beings with the Higher Planes.
Therefore, when the Disciple has reached a certain exercise with the results I shall call "normal average" that the series must yield, the possibility is given him of voluntarily provoking the creation of a stronger, more sensitive bond with the Hierarchies who direct this whole process of Initiation — totally invisible to others, made in the silence of personal effort and, for that very reason, already fulfilling one of the fundamental conditions: "non-exhibitionism".
But when he judges himself prepared to take the step that may really signify his Initiation within the Suddha Dharma Current, he will see that the necessary "promises" are not obligations taken in a worldly way towards the Directorate of a Society, but something much deeper and more real: it is a matter of taking definitive — though progressive, it is true — bearings towards the realisation of ONESELF, as a being capable of becoming a faithful observer of the universal laws in the daily practice of life.
As regards the more external part — which has, of course, a vital relation with the inner individual vibration — we see that the Suddha Dharma requires of its Members the progressive abandonment of stimulants (alcohol, tobacco, etc.) and of carnivorous feeding.
It is sought, moreover, that the Initiate — since in that period the initiatic road really begins — should go on reducing the squandering of his sexual energies, so as to purify his passional plane while keeping in reserve energy transmutable into higher modalities.
Even though this is not obligatory — for according to the Suddha doctrine no one must "abandon" any of the duties previously contracted, nor impose on those near him any modality not "accepted" by them — there works nevertheless in all this the influence of the Disciple's sincere effort; and, as the Western Masters (Papus and others) also observed, when the Disciple is really prepared to take a new step, circumstances themselves tend to permit him its realisation, without premature violences of any kind. Moreover, · 17

It would be a modality of egoism, nothing more.
As we shall see, the Suddha Dharma classifies its Members — besides the "degree", that is, the special Initiation — according to their sexual manner of conduct; but initially it distinguishes those who have been chaste from birth, those who become so from a certain period of life, and finally those who, for family or personal reasons, do not lead a life of absolute chastity.
The Suddha teaches that all of them can follow the road, but that the means of realisation vary according to the situation referred to and that, naturally, the "height" — as we may call it — of results varies.
Nevertheless we must consider, once and for all, that when each being realises "the best his present condition permits", he has entirely fulfilled his dharma or Duty — and that very few do this, even though in general they have the impression of being able to undertake realisations far superior to those they have not yet effected. In coming articles we shall see other aspects of the doctrine, in its conceptual as in its practical part.
OM s. s. s. Jehel — 30 June 1943. Balzac the Occultist (Continuation).
By Santiago Gastaldi, President of the Confédération Universelle Balzacienne. "The birth of the human soul as a psychic and physical entity will be the science of the future." — Camille Flammarion. In the roll of Martinist Initiates stands included Honoré de Balzac, the author of "La Comédie Humaine".
According to the Martinist Tradition, Balzac was initiated by the writer and friend Henri de Latouche. It falls to us, therefore, to offer information from the literary point of view, so as to contribute, in this spiritual part, the material held in the archives of the Confraternité Universelle Balzacienne.
Far from our mind is the least doubt about what the venerable Martinist Order indicates; and our exposition will shed some light on Balzac's spiritual process, along his trajectory. We give in this form the contribution of a literary support that will serve as an element of corroboration, to bear witness to the facts of the life. In the first place we shall take up some considerations revealed in Papus's work: "Louis-Claude de Saint Martin".
J'attends pareillement le T. P. Maitre de Balzac".[1] On this point we wish to make a clarification, approaching the subject from the literary point of view: we affirm that this name cannot correspond to the writer Jean-Louis de Balzac [Guez de Balzac], who was born at Angoulême in 1597 and died in 1654.
But if there is no more explicit clarification of the "Maitre de Balzac" to whom the letter of Martines de Pasqually alludes, we shall set out a literary documentation which the venerable Martinist Order may submit for consideration among its illustrious Members. For our own judgement's part, we might say it would be acceptable that this "Brother" would have to be the father of Honoré de Balzac.
The proof — literary, of course — is from this point a source of information that leaves no doubt whatever. Now permit me to do here a little hauling of materials, to thread together the process of the events that passed. Balzac's sister — I refer to Honoré, the novelist — wrote a small volume entitled: "Balzac, sa vie et ses ouvres"[1] [2].
Let us begin by accepting these affirmations, the better to understand the spiritual process of Honoré de Balzac.
His sister Laura says, in the work referred to: "Ma mére, fort occupée d'idées religieuses, lisait alors les mystiques et les avait collectionnés; Honoré s'empare des oeuvres de Saint-Martin, de Sweddenborg, de mademoiselle Bourignon, de madame Guyon, de Jacob Boehm, qui forment plus de cent volumes et les dévore".[3] Now it is necessary to pass to other information, to prove who it was that initiated Anne-Charlotte-Laure Sallambier, the future wife of Balzac's father.
The father of the author of Louis Lambert was a man passionate for letters, and wrote some pamphlets. He was an enlightened man and gave very good counsels to his son — as did Laura, who was also a good counsellor to Honoré. In the year 1796 he married in Paris the daughter of one of his chiefs in the war administration, Laure Sallambier, thirty-two years younger than himself.
The following year he is found at Tours, where from 1804 to 1812 he exercises the functions of administrator of the general hospice. And there in the city of Tours, while his wife reads Swedenborg, he too reads the Bible, alternating with the books his wife charges him to read.
A further piece of information from a Balzacian offers us more material for this testimony, which reads: "Peut-etre s'est-elle adonnée a la lecture de tels ouvrages, sur l'instigation de son mari, adepte de cette franc-maçonnerie du XVIIIe siécle, qui se proposait de faire suite au christianisme défaillant, et comportait des tracés d'illuminisme et de mysticisme" ("Sténie, ou les erreurs philosophiques") by A.
Prioult.[4] But there exists a still more interesting verification for understanding that Honoré de Balzac, the famous novelist, had in his hands his mother's beautiful library, and that [1] Translator's note [The article's own]: "I inform you that Monsieur de Saint Martin has written me that he must come to take his winter quarters here, perhaps with the Master de Grainville.
he made those readings bear fruit when he composed one of his first novels, "Sténie", and those notes of the "Livre Mystique" which another author has commented on with such judgement.
We are now informed, then, that Balzac's mother possessed a good library and read the works of Swedenborg, Saint-Martin, Jacob Boehme, etc.; but now we must offer further documentation, and recall the most important works possessed by the Institute of Vendôme, where Balzac was taken to begin his primary studies.
Note, as documentation, that we possess a copy of the letter which the Director of the college of Vendôme, Mr. Mareschal-Duplessis, addressed to M. Armand Baschet, and which reads: "Honoré de Balzac, agé de huit ans et cinq mois, a eu la petite vérole, sans infirmités; caractére sanguin, s'echauffant facilment, est sujet a quelques fiévres de chaleur. Entré au pensionant le 22 juin 1807".[5] He left the college on 22 April 1813.
Now let us see what Balzac was reading at fourteen years of age.
From the catalogue of the college of Vendôme, as one commentator relates, the future author of the "Comédie Humaine" had asked to read the following books: Philosophia Magnética (1629); Traité du vrai secret des philosophes (1621); Raisonnements des bêtes, de la Chambre (1662); Le Rudiment de la philosophie naturelle, De Legues (1665); works of Raymond Lull; treatises on the transmutation of metals; The Twelve Keys of Philosophy of Father Basil Valentine (1624); a work on spectres, the apparitions of an angel, of demons, etc. It was precisely while engulfed in these readings that it occurred to him to write the "Traité de la Volonté".
As will be remembered, this work was written clandestinely at the college of Vendôme. But once discovered through a schoolfellow, Father Haugeault confiscated the original.
"You alone admired my Theory of the Will — says a character of Balzac's — that extensive work, to write which I learned oriental languages, anatomy, physiology, and to which I consecrated the greater part of my time; a work which, if I am not in error, will complement the labours of Mesmer, of Lavater, of Gall and of Bichat, opening a new road to human science". (La Peau de chagrin, page 103.) Later we shall see that in the novel "LOUIS LAMBERT" he reconstructed all that original lost at the college of Vendôme, and there displays his titanic genius.
But, so as not to stray too far from the plane of his life, we must complete other references to the work of his youth, when he was making his first philosophical and literary essays — leaving for another occasion the study of greater volume, in treating "La Comédie Humaine". A very careful work is the book entitled "Sténie, ou les Erreurs Philosophiques", whose author is a good Balzacian, M. A.
Prioult. The Viscount Lovenjoul had acquired the originals of this novel of Balzac's, which by good fortune are found among the old papers, and they have served as the base for the formation of a good study, in which the vocation of the young French writer can already be observed.
The same author makes us note the influence Balzac received from the readings of Swedenborg and of Saint-Martin when he composed "Sténie", his first novel. We wish to recall that Balzac did these readings at Tours and, as we said, at his mother's recommendation.
And this same book must have been inspired at Tours, because there he paints us scenes of the life of the province of Touraine. Now, when Balzac went to Paris, where he could then meet his great friend Henri de Latouche — who, according to the Martinists, initiated the author of "Séraphîta" — we must not forget that he brought with him already a great A Mother's Eyes.
By Fátima, A∴M∴ — Mother's eyes, indulgent eyes, eyes of pardon, eyes of love... Blessed be they! Pupils burning with fever, of sorrowing mothers; pupils ringed with violet shadows from the long watching beside the sick child...
Blessed be they! Eyes of the little old mother who looks with resignation on the ungrateful son who goes away, and whom life, in its selfish feeling, will tear perhaps forever from her loving arms. Happy eyes of young mothers beginning their mission; profoundly sweet eyes that rest upon all the cradles of the world...
Blessed be they! Mother's pupils, pupils that are beacons of infinite goodness kindled by God. Mighty beacons whose clear beams must always draw the children of every age. ★ In the Name of the Master "PAPUS" — On 25 October 1916 the Ven.
Master Papus died, struck down by the illness acquired in the trenches, on the stairs of the Hospital of "La Charité" in Paris, where he had begun his life as a physician. On that same day, the Master was going to present his sentiments of respectful friendship to the sage who had been his teacher: the illustrious phthisiologist, Dr. Émile Sergent. The newspapers had just made known the recent death of the eminent sage.
It is one of the lights of European science that disappears; and to his life of sacrifices it is consoling to us to present, in the name of our Master Papus, a true homage.
Professor Émile Sergent was born in 1867; and in 1926, 1928 and 1937 he was in the Argentine Republic.
