p. 1YEAR II · MARCH 1943 · Nº 11 — The Venerable Figure of Master Cedaior. By Jehel, S∴I∴ At the last hour, with the previous number of our Review already all but printed, all we were able to include was the laconic notice of the death of the Venerable Master Cedaior.
Discharging now a double duty — as a reverent initiatic homage to him who was my first Master and the Master of many, and as filial gratitude to one who, being my father, was always also a very wise friend, whose experience and example showed me the Way — I shall set out for you, in successive articles, what may be set out of the Master's life and work.
If I find myself obliged to certain reserves, it is solely by reason of there existing, still living, beings whose activities are strictly bound to those of the Master, and whom the initiatic rule of our Orders does not permit me to expose to profane eyes while the actors of the Silent Service are alive.
On the 1st of September 1872, in the house that had once been the residence of Bayard (le chevalier saens peur et sans reproche) , in the city of Valence, in the south of France, not far from Lyon and near what had in other times been the seigneurial domain of the Counts of Mascheville, there was born in a modest household the Brother Cedaior (Viscount Albert Raymond Costet de Mascheville).
Son of a Celt and of a Latin woman, he was the elder of the two sons of that household. The second, Daniel, of great talent as a draughtsman, died relatively young. I shall leave the account of his birth horoscope until I treat of the initiatic part of Cedaior's life.
Let us look first at the life of the man, which will give us the understanding of the life of the Master — or, better said, the price the MAN had to pay in order to be able to work as an INITIATE. In his father's house they opposed his precocious musical vocation, and many children would have been discouraged by so great a difficulty.
Cedaior already shows his firm will, and obtains, at 9 years of age, free lessons from the celebrated French violinist Charles Dancla, whose methods are of worldwide repute. He reveals, at an early age, a virtuosity and, above all, a sonority and interpretative expression that would remain for ever his characteristics as a violinist.
At about 13 he manages to “drag” his parents to Lyon in order to obtain, on Charles Dancla's recommendation, backing for entry to the Paris Conservatoire. We shall see that his passage through Lyon was the awakening of his initiatic career, for it was there that he came to know Master Amo.
p. 2Cedaior contrives, then, before he is 15, to be sent alone to Paris; and in the city of light he does not let himself be dazzled by the superficial or the frivolous. To the despair of his professors he plays at night in an orchestra of the 2nd rank, to earn all on his own what his subsistence required.
He leads that life until, years later, he obtains a first prize of the Paris Conservatoire and then wins, by competition, his appointment as Professor of the Conservatoire of Nancy — a post he does not take up.
In 1890, that is to say at 18 years of age, he is already interested in mystical matters, and divides his time between them and his artistic activity, which is growing, for he is already giving some concerts in well-known Theatres of Paris, such as the Trocadéro, where he makes a brilliant début.
In 1891 he voluntarily begins a military period of four years, for economic reasons and in order to be able to choose his place of service, which is Paris. He forms connections with persons who will influence his initiatic career, as we shall see when we study that aspect later.
In 1895 we find him in Egypt, on official mission from the French government, making, officially, studies of the ancient instruments and the acoustics of the primitive civilisations. We shall see in another article that a special mission of The Orders (Martinist and Kabbalistic Rose-Cross) also took him there.
Around 1900 his material activity grows: he carries out several inventions connected with music — mutes for violins, metronomes, and so on — and successively obtains posts of higher standing, coming to play in the great Concerts Colonne and Lamoureux and finally at the Opéra-Comique of Paris. It is also a period of great masonic, Martinist and kabbalistic activity.
In 1906 we find him with a music publishing house, hiring and selling pianos, and a Member of the Society of Authors of Paris — as is his wife, a brilliant pianist and composer, with whom he had joined himself years before, and their first son having been born already in 1901.
In 1910, sickened by European life and by the racial hatreds already showing themselves, he takes ship for the Argentine Republic, where he makes himself known as a concert performer and teacher. He founds Conservatoires in Buenos Aires, Olivos and San Isidro, and with his companion they quickly succeed in establishing a very acceptable material basis of life.
But in 1914, shortly before the birth of the second son, the initiate begins to captivate the man more and more, and Cedaior's material situation suffers the consequences of the detachment so brought on.
In 1919, after a phase of hidden activities which we shall see in another article, he publishes his principal work “The Laws of Vayú”, and, breaking up his first household, sets out to explore, alone, regions of the Andean cordillera that draw him. In 1921 we see him arrive at Mendoza, where he lived modestly on lessons in French and in music until 1924, the date at which a new hidden mission takes him to Brazil.
p. 3From 1924 to 1942 (note the inversion of the figures) in Brazil, he accomplishes little materially, suffers many miseries and many disillusionments; but his unbreakable spiritual will and the strength found in his companion allow him to withstand every buffeting.
From 1926 onward he fights simultaneously for material life, for the resurgence of the Orders (Martinist and Kabbalistic Rose-Cross), and for his personal mission: the preparation of olympic nuclei. We shall see later, in other articles, the fruits of his fecund sacrifice. In 1921 he fixes his residence definitively in Porto Alegre, near the Seat of the Martinist Order (at that period).
He consecrates the last years of his life to studying deep problems of the Platonic School and to synthesising his initiatic activities. Some time before his disincarnation he is already awaiting it, and announces it to those around him. A few days before his death, still in good health, he declares: “I have finished what I had to do this time round; I am going to take a look up there and will come back presently to continue.
On the 12th he gives his instructions for after his departure. On the 14th the first symptoms appear. Pulmonary congestion sets in, and uraemia follows. He is carried to the “Quinta de Boa Saúde”, where the tireless Dr. Pereirinha — a spiritualist physician — attends him fraternally.
The Venerable Master Cedaior passed gently to the other plane at 16.55 on the 22nd of January 1943; and a heavy rain came, at the hour of the giving of his remains to the Earth, to confirm his words of some days before, that “he would have to stir things a little up above, to break the drought”.
We have thus seen in summary the material and social life of the MAN; we shall see later the activity of the Master — over whose tomb there sounded, affectionately, the voice of the representatives of the Masonic Lodge Moreira Guimarães of the Vivekananda Centre, and of Sister Hipathia, representing the Sovereign Delegate General of the Martinist Order — and over which was stretched the friendly Hand of the Venerable Masters who had led him in the first initiatic steps of this incarnation, and whom he always SERVED as best he could, at the price of any sacrifice whatever: AMO – PAPUS – VAYÚ – SATTVA – SEDIR.
May the Roses flower upon the Cross / Of his tomb, as they flowered in the Light / Emanated from his Sacrifice, from his Heart, / And may the trajectory of his Mission go on fruitful. AMEN et AUM · 3
p. 4The Venerable Master CEDAIOR (1872 – 1943) — Pres. of the Kabbalistic Order of the R∴C∴ — Bishop of the Gnostic Church. — Hon. Pres. of the Martinist Order of South America. — Founder of the “Olympic Family and College of the Gy”. — M. S. T. — O. T. O. — Neo-Pythagorean — 33∴ — etc. 4
p. 5Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism (Continued).
Teachings of Jehel, S∴I∴ I continue commenting on the Ceremonial of Initiation to the Third Degree of Masonry, that is, that of Master Mason (see number 9 and earlier of “LA INICIACIÓN”): 49th) — We saw also that King Solomon (king of Justice, Member of the Secret Sanctuary of the SACRED EMPIRE — a term masons ought to meditate on, if they knew the works of Saint-Yves d'Alveydre and the labours of Archytas, disciple of Pythagoras, the history of RAM…) has applied to each assassin the VERY PENALTY that his troubled conscience had made him ask for.
The interpretation of this is complex, for it refers to the action of the Law of Cause and Effect (Karma) on the THREE PLANES. Let us see.
1st, Physical and Social Plane: always and unavoidably we shall place ourselves, in relation to the “Companions” (“colleagues” of life, of evolution), so that through them we shall receive the just reward — that is, apparent recompense or apparent punishment; in reality, COMPENSATION for our acts of every kind. This will happen to everyone, at every moment, minute by minute, for small things as for great.
2nd, Rapid Liquidations: each time we have the HAPPINESS the happiness of being brought before an impartial Judge (an Initiate, a Master, or our own CONSCIENCE in a state of impartiality), we shall then receive the opportunity of seeing fulfilled RAPIDLY — sometimes INSTANTANEOUSLY — events that come to compensate faults committed earlier, and which, without that intervention, could not have been liquidated except across long periods of trials and difficulties.
3rd, Assent to Compensation: all of us, in general, are in the habit of receiving the trials, the pains and the other “disagreeable” things that the Law of compensation brings us as “bricks on the head”, and we protest energetically. Some, already rare, accept them with RESIGNATION, as an “unavoidable evil” and therefore tolerated.
Others, very rare while incarnate — and all of us after Initiation or after death — must come to accept, I will say more, to understand, the necessity of going to obtain the EFFECT of prior actions, and therefore to do as Jubelas, Jubelos and Jubelum did, who cried out calling for the deserved punishment, or better said the necessary reparation, seen now no longer as an unavoidable evil but as a desirable good, which restores the soul to a state of Equilibrium.
Meditation on the post-mortem state — in which one watches life go past and feels again, fact by fact, the joy or the pain caused by oneself in one's acts towards others — has this same meaning and end: to come to desire the compensation, not understood intellectually but LIVED, socially, materially, physically or in the soul.
50th) — The Law of Cause and Effect having been fulfilled — that is, the Collective Karma (of the Companions, in this case) — Solomon sends the twelve companions out again in search of the Body of Hiram, that is, of the Initiatic Tradition. But FIVE days later they return having found nothing: an image of the fact that their nature, too human and still material, · 5
p. 6(FIVE: the number of the senses and of the concrete mind, purely intellectual) did not yet permit them to approach the True Arcana. 51st) — Solomon then sends NINE MASTERS (Nine is the number of the real Initiate: prudent, silent, with his cloak, staff and little lamp — image of the small INNER light that guides him).
They climb Mount Lebanon, and on the SECOND day of their ascent (that is, by means of investigations on plane Nº 2 — the astral — or with its help) they find a place where the Earth shows signs of a recent action of Wisdom.
They measure that place in “breadth, length and depth”; that is, they apply their knowledge to verifying the extent of the UNIVERSITY (breadth and length) of the Tradition they have found, and likewise its authenticity as regards its origin and transmission (depth). Satisfied with the examination made, they mark the place with a branch of acacia — that is, with a plant that has always symbolised Immortality.
But, being TRUE MASTERS, they do not “touch”, do not handle that Truth; rather, RESPECTFULLY, they veil it, cover it, and go to deliver the secret of its source to King Solomon — that is, to the Visible Head of the Initiatic Organisation of his Order and of his Epoch, the only one who can authorise contact with, and use of, that Hidden Truth.
52nd) — And Solomon orders that they bring the Tradition to Jerusalem: that is, in the mystical language of the Legend, the Body of the Hierophant Hiram. To fulfil such a Mission — to bring the Invisible Truth once more into the Material World — the Masters do not now set out as travellers on a human search.
They set out ritually, initiatically, clothed with their aprons: that is, duly PREPARED, in full possession of their powers and conscious of their functions. And they wear their white gloves, proof of the purity and disinterestedness of their action, for THEY GO TO SEEK SOMETHING FOR OTHERS, not for themselves.
53rd) — And arriving at the place where Hiram rests, they draw out the plant and the veil, uncover the Fountain of Life and of Death, and before the Figure of Hiram they raise their arms and let them fall, exclaiming “Alas, Lord, my God!
In doing this they also strike their feet on the ground, to give it to be understood that the whole painful part of the search for Truth and for the Way of Life lies solely in attachment to the things “of the ground” — that is, to what is objective, material, terrestrial and possessive.
54th) — One of the Masters present then tried to raise the corpse, seizing the index finger of the right hand and saying “BOHAZ”: that is, invoking the POWER of Realisation upon the Visible Plane by means of the Will and Orientation, Command, Social Force. That is to say, the SUPREME TRUTH is not revealed to those who, wise though they be, still wish to command or to direct chiefly with a view to material, social or visible realisations.
In other words, the Spiritual key is not given to one who might employ it chiefly in creating things — beautiful, perhaps, but of a transitory or limited character, that is, without a perfect accord with the Universal Law. 55th) — Another Master tried to raise the corpse of Hiram, taking the middle finger and pronouncing “JAKIN”: that is, invoking the astral Force, Destiny, the Laws of Truth in action.
p. 7Let us meditate, my brothers…) and this Ancient Master asks his Collaborators to observe that WITHOUT HIM they can do nothing, but that, JOINING THEIR EFFORTS TO HIS, the realisation will be obtained.
And the Ancient Master takes, in the form of a claw (wholly and firmly), in a friendly clasp of hands, the right wrist of Hiram (where one “counts the pulsation of life”, the secret of the UNIVERSAL VITAL RHYTHM); and while TWO MASTERS, placed on EACH SIDE of the corpse, help him, they raise the Hierophant upright.
A transparent image of the fact that it was needful for the Ancient (ROYAL WISDOM) to see sincere Collaboration of Strength and of Beauty, of the Mind and of the Heart, of Man and of Woman, of the Soul and of the Body — of the Poles in general — in order to PERMIT the Spirit of Immortal and undeformable Truth to penetrate into his Work.
In the next article we shall comment on the embrace the Ancient Master gives to the corpse of the Hierophant, which is a complex and profitable lesson. For today I end here, wishing that meditation may give you the Deep Keys of all this beautiful Symbolism, from which I have removed “some” veils. (To be continued) · Practical Course of Judicial Astrology (Continued).
Teachings of Surya, S∴I∴ In the previous article (Nº 9 of LA INICIACIÓN) we had seen how to classify and note the planets that were found in Cardinal, Fixed and Common Signs, and in “Triplicities of Elements”, that is, in Signs of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. We also taught how to know which planets are “Essentially dignified” and “Accidentally dignified”, as well as in “Mutual reception”.
Today we shall continue the “classification” of the positions of the planets of our “example horoscope” (see Nº 8 of LA INICIACIÓN). Exaltations — the following classification is that of the “Exaltations”, which allows one to know which planets are “EXALTED”, that is, with a great vibratory force, almost comparable to an “essential Dignification”.
Each planet possesses a single place of exaltation, that is, a determined SIGN OF THE ZODIAC in which it has a very considerable influence; and even within that sign there is one “degree” at which the maximum of that exaltation is verified. We summarise all of it in the following table: SATURN is exalted in LIBRA, especially in the 21st. JUPITER is exalted in CANCER, especially in the 15th. MARS is exalted in CAPRICORN, especially in the 28th.
THE SUN is exalted in ARIES, especially in the 19th. VENUS is exalted in PISCES, especially in the 27th. MERCURY is exalted in AQUARIUS, especially in the 15th. · 7
p. 8THE MOON is exalted in TAURUS, especially in the 3rd. ASCENDING Node of the Moon in SAGITTARIUS, especially in the 3rd. ASCENDING Node of the Moon in GEMINI, especially in the 3rd. URANUS is exalted in SCORPIO, especially in the ?? NEPTUNE is exalted in CANCER, especially in the ??
As readers will note, it has not yet been determined with precision which is the degree of maximum force, in the signs where it occurs, of the exaltation of Uranus and Neptune — planets whose effects are not all of them yet very well known. In accordance with the synoptic table set out here, we are going to classify the exalted planets there may be in our example chart. We find: JUPITER, exalted in the Sign of CANCER (13° 39′).
We verify that there is no other planet or special sign (Nodes of the Moon) in a position of exaltation.
We shall pass, then, to the following classification, which we see in the diagram, that of: Debilities — The “Debilities” of the planets, in a manner analogous to the “Dignities or Dignifications”, may be essential or accidental; but, so as not to complicate the diagram, all are included under “Debilities”, putting first the strongest, that is, the “essential” ones, according to the following rules.
A planet is in “essential debility” when it is in “fall or in exile”. Let us see what these two new technical terms of astrology mean. A planet is said to be in “exile” — or “detriment” — when it is found in the SIGN opposite to the place of its domiciles (diurnal or nocturnal, indifferently). On the other hand, a planet is said to be in “fall” when it occupies the SIGN opposite to that of its exaltation.
As we have already studied which are the ZODIACAL SIGNS in which the planets are Essentially Dignified (by domicile), and also which are those in which they are “exalted”, if we look for the opposites it will be easy for us to establish the following table, which summarises the “ESSENTIAL DEBILITIES” of all the planets: PLANET — SIGNS OF EXILE OR DETRIMENT — SIGNS OF FALL. Saturn: Leo and Cancer; Aries. Jupiter: Gemini and Virgo; Capricorn.
Mars: Taurus and Libra; Cancer. Sun: Aquarius; Libra. Venus: Aries and Scorpio; Virgo. Mercury: Sagittarius and Pisces; Leo. Moon: Capricorn; Scorpio. Ascending node: __________ ; Gemini 3rd. Descending node: __________ ; Sagittarius 3rd. Uranus: Leo; Taurus. Neptune: Virgo; Capricorn. · 8
p. 9We shall not yet classify the “WEAKENED” planets, for we have still to examine the cases of “accidental Debility”, which will be the object of the first part of our next article.
For today we shall leave readers to study the part already published, and we shall have them note that we deliberately use the Latin and the Spanish names of the signs of the Zodiac indifferently — as for example LIBRA – BALANZA, or TAURO – TORO, or GÉMINIS – GEMELOS — so that they may grow accustomed to them, since in almost all texts of astrology they will find this double denomination.
It is necessary to master the technical language and the symbols of the whole technical part of Astrology, so as to find oneself on friendly and well-known ground before penetrating, as we shall shortly do, into the domain of the interpretation of the Horoscope. (To be continued) · Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continued). Janusirasana.
Asuri Kapila, S∴I∴ The eighth Asana we are going to study is called JANUSIRASANA, or “posture of the head and knee”, because it is these parts of the body that play the principal part. Technique. — Sit, as usual, on the floor; bend the left leg and, with the heel, press gently on the region of the right groin, while keeping the right leg extended along the floor.
Then grasp the foot with both hands, breathe out and draw the belly gently in, at the same time lowering the head until the forehead comes to touch the right knee. Remain in this position for 5 or 10 seconds in the early stages, until reaching, by progressive increases, 27 minutes. We recommend our readers to observe rigorously the gradual increase of the time, because failure to follow this instruction could produce serious disorders.
After having remained for the indicated time in that position, raise the head slowly until returning to the original position, rest a few minutes, and then repeat the exercise six or seven times, always interposing the small increments mentioned. The JANUSIRASANA may be practised either in the manner stated above, or by bending the right leg instead of the left.
Besides holding the breath for as long as possible, think that the sexual energy is flowing towards the brain, transformed into vivifying, regenerating and creative energy. Those who practise the JANUSIRASANA will find greater ease in performing the PASCHIMOTTASANA, published in Nº 10 of LA INICIACIÓN.
Results. — The beneficial effects of this Asana may be summarised as follows: 1) Increase of the “digestive fire”, with the consequent normalisation of the digestive functions.
p. 102) Stimulation of the Solar Plexus or “Surya Chacra” (Surya — Sun; Chacra — Plexus). 3) Transformation of sexual energy into psychic energy, thus permitting emissions on the brain's part of subtler radiations, and greater happiness in the practice of Brahmacharia, that is, a greater chastity.
4) Disappearance of all the functional disturbances of the genital-urinary organs — but not of diseases of those organs, in which case one must not practise this Asana, and must consult a physician. 5) Increase of the vital energies, with the consequent state of euphoria and increase of physical and psychic dynamism, so that there disappears any state there might be of general debility and lack of will, known vulgarly by the word “idleness”.
6) Greater flow of blood to the pelvic and abdominal organs, and the consequent disappearance of colic, intestinal inflammations, and so on. 7) Kundalini awakens, and its energies begin to be irradiated throughout the whole organism. 8) Increase of muscular tone in the legs, arms and other muscles that come into action.
We wish for all our readers and for our disciples that they may gather good fruits from this Asana too, as they have obtained in the gathering of the preceding Asanas.
The purpose we had in beginning this Progressive Course of Asana Yoga being that our readers might enjoy a perfect physical and mental health, with the consequent agility in body and in mind — that is, a true state of equilibrium — we shall publish, at the request of several readers, and in whatever form the space of the Review permits, all that is possible on the rejuvenation of the physical body obtained by the Yogis of India by means of their secret methods.
Readers will thus be able to understand the reasons for the true rejuvenation of that person whose case was set out in the article “A curious case of rejuvenation”, published in Nº 7 of LA INICIACIÓN, and which awakened such interest in many readers.
Those who wish to carry out, together with the Asanas, all the practices we shall be setting out, will thus be able to obtain truly extraordinary benefits; but it is necessary to warn that one must have patience, faith, constancy and method, as much in the study as in the meditation and practice of all that is published.
Moreover, all students of yoga will also be able to find “something” of what they have always sought — that is, the revelation of the True Science of the Spirit; and we affirm such a thing because we ground ourselves on long years of personal experience and observation and, personally, on the most valuable counsels and realisations of those venerable Gurus who KNOW.
There exist special practices, very jealously guarded by the Yogis, which allow the physical-mental vigour of a person of 70, completely aged and weakened, to be given back, and to give that person the appearance of a person of 40 — a complete regeneration of the tissues in general and of the muscular tissues in particular being observable, together with the establishment of physiological metabolism, the correction of some physical defects, the recovery of bodily agility, and so on.
p. 11something useful yet for others; and they go also to those who, “weary of learning, wish at last to know”, as Papus says, and therefore to realise.
Especially women — without whom the world would lack poetry, beauty, tenderness and love — will be those able to draw the most valuable advantages, since the mission of woman is to beautify the life of man, to make him better, to awaken in him the sacred fire of love, so that there may culminate the realisation of that Sacred Ternary: Father – Mother – Child, divinity in man and symbols of Immortal Life.
They will be able to find in these teachings a true key for keeping their bodies always supple, fresh, youthful and smooth, thus putting a brake on physical wear, in spite of that inexorable tyrant called Age. Feminine charms ought to be one of the primordial factors in the life of women, since an eternal spring charms far more than a cold, sad and rainy winter.
To keep the freshness, the comeliness and the youth of the body is a duty, a necessity, a sacred law. Where there is health. Youth, beauty — there is gladness and happiness. How many households have been destroyed by the complete neglect of one of the spouses, this caused by disillusion!
In the first years of marriage everything seemed gladness, strength, agility; she always displayed a delicate figure that charmed, and he too made a show of his strength and agility. Some years pass; she begins to put on weight, losing thereby the figure that some time back was the admiration of all; she grows heavy, no longer wants to go walking, eats to excess — and he, losing the illusion, begins to draw away.
For his part, he cultivates his abdomen, which grows ever more voluminous; he eats a great deal, drinks to excess, is bored and disillusioned, rests in his armchair, takes no more long walks. The result? The charm broken.
If one of the spouses has had the strength of will and the constancy to keep always youthful, for an ideal and through the knowledge of certain practices learned in Naturism and the like, and sees that the companion — as the case may be — has been left behind on the road, abandoning the struggle, then that one will seek, irremediably, in another person the ideal that has been formed.
Result: despair, sadness, tears, separation and divorce — when it does not end in a tragedy that will fall back upon the innocent children. The danger is greater when the woman possesses beauty in her youth but not intelligence, and the man is attracted solely by her comeliness; because the day she loses it, nothing remains that could constitute an attraction or a charm.
By contrast, the woman who is beautiful in her youth, intelligent and spiritual, will not be afraid; the danger is less, for the years will have no effect on her, because her intelligence, which is like a powerful magnet, will know how to hold her companion. Everything we have described could be remedied with a little goodwill, so as to avoid the too-rapid wearing away of youth and the disappearance of beauty, delicacy and comeliness.
p. 12Transcendent Psychology (Continued). By Wronsky, A∴M∴ It is curious to observe that positivist philosophy — the fundamental basis of materialism — in affirming that the only real thing is matter, and that nothing is or exists outside it, forgets to give us a precise and unimpeachable definition of what, “in truth”, that matter is.
I shall perhaps be told that my judgement is somewhat rash, since it would be enough to appeal to any treatise of physics to find a rigorous definition of the term. Well then, we confess honestly that the definitions contained in the works we know do not seem to us, at the least, to agree… And if not, let the reader judge for himself. CARO & ANCHIA. “Matter is everything that affects our sense of touch.
LAVOISIER: “…that which extends in space and persists in time… the last and essential reality. LE BON: “…the substratum of the worlds and of the beings that live upon their surface… it is not eternal and may disappear for ever. C. G. DARWIN: “…the constructive material of the world. SULLIVAN: “…the foundation of the world. EDDIGTON : “…the fields of force of space. PUIG: “…the substance endowed with inertia and extension.
“…different from spiritual substance. EINSTEIN: “…a form of energy. As we see, there are here four different definitions: 1st — Matter is the last reality of the world. 2nd — It is opposed to spirit. 3rd — It is eternal. 4th — It is temporal. But it occurs to us that not one of the four reaches the very essence of the term. In other words: what is matter? Is it that which our senses perceive, or that which our senses do not perceive?
In the first case we should have the solution advocated by the “sensualists”; in the second, that of the “objectivists”. But in both cases it can be affirmed that the intrinsic essence of what one seeks to reach escapes all experimental verification. Nevertheless (and in this all materialist philosophers are in agreement) matter must explain the world, since it is the substructure of its reality. However, the reality of the world can be disputed.
Many philosophers, especially those of the middle ages, discoursed on the point. Some, the “Idealists”, maintain that the only real things are our sensations. According to this point of view matter does not exist as such, but only in so far as it represents our sensations, which are its sufficient and necessary cause. In other words: what we perceive and recognise of the world are the representations we form of it.
Then the world is a projection, an image of our mind, towards which it returns by way of our sense organs. There is here, then, a perfectly clear begging of the question: knowledge is prior to all experience; this is “a priori”; in · 12
p. 13consequence, the duality subject–object is reduced to a single term: the subject, who is the one who “imagines” the world and perceives it according to the a priori conditions of knowing.
According to this, the billiard ball I am at this moment holding between my hands would be nothing other than a complex of particular sensations connoting the qualities of extension, hardness, temperature, relief and so on, which exists in my mind before all experience and which are reflected in what I call a billiard ball.
Other philosophers, known as “realists” and also “empiricists”, oppose this doctrine, saying that matter is independent of our sensations; that the latter depend on the former, and that there could be no sensation where the (material) cause was lacking. That is to say, there would really exist a heavy body, a conducting metal, a phosphorescent surface and so on, our sensations depending on those absolute properties of matter.
The “phenomenalists” embody the physiological doctrine we might call intermediate. According to them there exists, in truth, a “thing in itself”, essence of the world — unknowable to the subject of knowledge — the phenomenon alone, that is, the observation of the thing in itself, being the only thing apprehensible and knowable to that subject.
The perception of the phenomenon would also depend on “a priori” data: space, time, causality (something like the triple root of knowing). Now then, studying the different metaphysical systems that condition the postulates set out, we obtain as a definitive premise that matter is known to us by its phenomenal aspects, but not in its intimate and real essence.
In consequence, it represents a postulate of science upon which the dogma of its ultimate structure has been raised. Let us note in passing an important observation. The materialists ask of religion: “Show us God”; religion replies: “Show us matter. And, as is logical, it has been demonstrated that neither the one nor the other can be apprehended by what we are accustomed to call “experimental proof”.
Nevertheless, if we meditate on it a little, we shall not be slow to discover that “experimental proof” is claiming to intrude into a metaphysical sphere that escapes its natural resources. But if it is a question of a metaphysical sphere, is one not postulating the idea that Spirit and Matter are the complementary terms of an essence or transcendent principle that passes beyond the limit of human knowledge?
In consequence, the demonstration of any one whatever of the terms composing the binomial under consideration will reach the very essence of the world — which, as we see, may be named, according to the point of view we adopt, either God or Matter (understanding by God, the Spirit).
On a question of such importance it seems to us useless to point out that our own opinion would be without value; we lean, therefore, on the authority of a metaphysical, religious and initiatic creed that is lost in the night of time, as the commentators of the Kabbalah affirm to us. Of course this demonstration will take us onto ground where profane Psychology cannot follow us.
p. 14A Great Martinist Initiate: Honoré de Balzac. By PITÁGORAS, S∴I∴ That Honoré de Balzac possessed deep esoteric knowledge is a fact that has drawn everyone's attention and that it is absolutely impossible to call in doubt.
Indeed, in many of his works — as for example “Ursule Mirodet” , “La peau de chagrin”, “La recherche de l'Absolu” and “Les Proscrits” — Balzac has clearly shown that he possesses esoteric knowledge: not superficial and panoramic, such as any cultivated person in general might have, but deep and minute, such as can only be obtained in certain secret societies whose reason for being is exclusively the deepened study and the practice of esoteric doctrine.
It follows, therefore, very clearly — for one who knows and can understand the marvellous doctrine set out in his works and, at the same time, interpret all that Balzac does not write but lets be glimpsed in his expression — that the esoteric culture of the great French writer is too deep and too minute for it to be supposed that he could have obtained it from the reading of books or other publications; and that this culture is not the result of a passing curiosity but, on the contrary, the fruit of long and deep studies carried out in a secret spiritualist milieu, sole possessor of certain transcendental knowledge.
What could this spiritualist milieu be, in which Balzac lived, and where could he have come to know the one, or the ones, who taught him the sacred doctrine?
There exist no original and authentic documents that could, in explicit and categorical wording, throw light on every shadow, every doubt; but we possess a series of relative proofs which, considered in isolation, might have slight value, and which nevertheless, being all of them concordant, no longer permit us to doubt Balzac's Martinist initiation.
In “Louis Lambert” Balzac writes: “At that period, Saint-Martin, Gence and a few other French writers, half German, were almost the only persons who, in the French empire, knew the name of Swedenborg. How can Balzac make so categorical an affirmation, if he had not had the possibility of knowing those successors of Saint-Martin, Gence and the rest, who could be the only ones capable of informing him?
And, on the other hand, if those persons had been the only ones of the period to know the name of Swedenborg, does this not demonstrate their close relations — cultural and spiritual at the least — with the great Swedish illuminator?
Finally, is the allusion to certain “half German” French writers not a reference to all those Martinists whose names he knew, whom he did not wish to name, and who might well be Rudolf Salzman, Trompowski, Heisch, Jean Tüerkheim and the rest — all of them “half German” because they were all of Strasbourg? But where Balzac indicates his Martinist affiliation clearly is in “Les Proscrits”, where he writes: · 14
p. 15“Mystical theology embraced the whole body of the revelations and the explanation of the mysteries. This branch of the ancient theology has remained secretly honoured among us.
Jacob Boehme, Swedenborg, Martines de Pasqually, Saint-Martin, Molinos, Madame Guyon, Bourignon and Krüdener, the great sect of the Ecstatics, of the Illuminated, have at different epochs worthily preserved the doctrines of this science, whose end has in it something terrifying and gigantic. Today, as in other times, it is a question of giving man wings to penetrate into the sanctuary where God hides himself from our gaze.
Let us note, first of all, that Balzac speaks to us of the “mystical theology” which “embraced the whole body of the revelations and the explanation of the mysteries” — that is, not of an esoteric doctrine presented, as in various other esoteric organisations of the period, in the most diverse aspects and in different forms, but of a “mystical theology”, that is, of that same doctrine presented “mystically”; and mysticism is, as we know, the predominant characteristic of Martinism in the second half of the eighteenth century, a characteristic owed to the deep influence of Saint-Martin in the Chapters of the Elect Cohens, founded, as is known, by Martines de Pasqually.
Moreover, Balzac knew perfectly the kabbalistic construction of this “mystical theology”, exactly as it was taught in Martinism, because he adds: “embraced the whole body of the revelations and the explanation of the mysteries”. Indeed, it is the Kabbalah alone that can “embrace the whole body of the revelations” and “explain the mysteries”.
On the other hand, Balzac affirms categorically that “this branch of the ancient theology has remained secretly among us”. “Ancient theology”, because it is the one that, in all times and among all peoples, has been taught in every initiatic community; “and has remained secretly honoured”, because only in secrecy can so transcendent a doctrine be transmitted among the initiates of secret societies; and “among us”. Who were these “us”?
Balzac does not say. One might think that by the word “us” he meant to allude to spiritualist circles in general; but one might also believe, as I believe, that Balzac meant to refer to the intimate circle of initiates of which he formed part. What was this circle of initiates?
Balzac does not tell us clearly that it was the one the Martinists constituted, but he does tell us that “the doctrines of this science have, at different epochs, been worthily preserved by Jacob Boehme, Swedenborg, Martines de Pasqually, Saint-Martin, Molinos, Madame Guyon, Bourignon and Krüdener, the great sect of the ecstatics and of the illuminated”.
Now then, if we set aside Miguel Molinos, founder of quietism, who died in Rome in 1692; Madame Guyon, Bourignon and Krüdener, who were quietists; and the sect of the ecstatics, who had very close relations with the Martinists — who was Boehme but that illuminated cobbler who died in 1624 and whose works had a great influence on Saint-Martin?
p. 16a thing Balzac has carefully avoided in all his works — the great French author has, beyond any doubt, meant to refer to Martinism in the passage mentioned above, and speaks of its inspirers, of its founder, of its continuer , of its initiates, of the sects that took their origin from Martinism itself or that were in intimate contact with it. (To be continued) · Truth – Nature.
Remembering… To the much-loved Vyasa, blue messenger of the year 1935. — MAYA, S∴I∴ Nature sings; from two thoughts a new being is born, thousands of beings, and each one of them acquires its own soul; for when the new dawn shines, each takes up again the work begun.
All that thinks, or all that loves, stirring ceaselessly, feels itself drawn towards a supreme object: the skiff seeks a harbour, the bee seeks a flower, the compass seeks a pole, and man labours on, seeking, consciously or unconsciously, the Truth. The deep Truth; most solid granite which, at the bottom of every sea, our anchor always finds, as it travels the world through which there pass, in the dark abyss, innumerable dreams.
Truth, beautiful river that runs eternally; wellspring in which all causes , radiant light of the spirit that is in every soul. Tree of rough bark, Banyan of vastest crown whose shade spreads wide; tree in which all find a refuge: some upon its branches, others beside its trunk, and others at its root.
Blue with which the water of the bitter element is veiled, when we let our boat run at the wind's mercy and, leaning over the waves, hear within the soul the epithalamic singer of the sea. Blue of the smiling sky, which we admire when we try to listen to what our spirit says, when we attempt to decipher the dark words the aether murmurs and the stars write.
Truth, pure creation, universal being, ocean that girds the universe entire, star that makes the breath of the Lord spring forth, flowers from which, perhaps, He gathers the honey. Heaven and earth: Truth made flesh; Nature. Nature, inexhaustible book, of which man himself is the deepest ground. Nature, holy and wise book, written by God with the Light of Truth.
Nature, symbolic book of salvation, in which the heart and the mind find their nourishment, and which all the wise strive to decipher, and whose sense must be taught; book that the initiate spells out in the knowledge of himself; that Gautama the Buddha reads beneath the sacred Bo, and that the Christ reads beside the divine Cross. 16
p. 17Truth is Always Beautiful (Commentaries on the Exhibition of the G∴I∴D∴E∴E∴).
By a S∴I∴ In three rooms, of which LA INICIACIÓN today offers a partial view, there are on show — by the fruitful initiative of the Gidee, under the silent auspices of the Martinist Order, which makes itself present there only through its marvellous symbol, suspended like a Protection above the Picture of the ADEPT with its unfolded and irradiating aura — the most notable works that Dr. Jehel began to describe, briefly, in his account published in the previous number of this Review.
This commentary does not have as its end to detail numerically the works exhibited, nor to cite them separately. It seeks rather to convey to the brothers who have not visited it a little of the much that was felt there across several visits, some of them long.
In the first place, a beauty of colours and of majesty emanates from many of the works exhibited, which caress the mind and bring to it coloured and plastic messages that words would perhaps not suffice to render as the art and devotion of the authors expressed them — all of them initiates, in diverse grades or ways, but bound in spirit and in realisation by that noble appetite to feel the beauty of a universal truth and to seek to manifest, in a form perceptible to the less gifted, some of its most perfect expressions.
The technical figures of Yoga, which speak of the necessity of caring for my body as a precious and complex instrument, a means of expression and realisation of all works, from the most material to many — or all — of the spiritual or psychic ones.
It speaks to me also of the discipline, the perseverance, the harmony needed in each one in order to arrive at a beautiful realisation, which begins as a gymnastic and a dietetic and ends in ecstasies, creations or perceptions of other kinds that bring the human being to the revelation of his most divine part, or to contact with the planes and beings of the Divine World — which, well meditated, is probably the same thing.
The marvellous pictures of sensations, feelings, passions, thought-forms, auric projections and beings of the lower and middle astral — human and of nature — speak to me in graphic and coloured language of reality, and more especially of that part of it which has come to be called subjective, abstract or invisible, only because we do not make the effort needed to render it, for ourselves, as tangible, as visible, as objective as the armchair in which, softly gathered, I contemplate so much beauty offered us by the effort of some brothers, whose ideal and desire for realisation was greater than any sloth, any indifference or any difficulty arising in the course of the conception, perception or realisation of all that there amazes me, instructing me or setting in vibration something of the best that resides in the human being: the instinctive or intuitive perceiving of truth made beauty, or perceived as it really is.
The works representing devas (angelic beings), full of Peace and of Light in their marvellous Function of guiding our steps, of aiding each of our least efforts to draw near the true Light, dazzle by their purity of execution, and make one meditate on what a human being might be who tried to awaken the angel sleeping within him, seeking to live “semi-angelic functions” by likewise aiding any constructive impulse or effort of his brothers in humanity, or seeking · 17
p. 18to relieve their individual and collective pains — as the “DEVA IN THE HOSPITAL” or the “DEVA OF THE PEACE OF THE FIELDS” teaches us by luminous example.
Other figures, these ones chiselled, give us in their sweet rigidity, in their gentle firmness, the same lesson “sung in another key”, like a confirming leitmotiv that the spirituality of other brothers offers us, by the sacrifice of hours of spiritual trance and of hours stolen from sleep, to make so many small representations of marvellous grandeurs.
One picture, “THE BLESSING OF THE MASTER”, shows us an Initiate wholly surrounded by a devotional dawn, vibrant with emotion at the awakening of Light he feels beating within him: a human being strong from all his efforts, powerful through his knowledge and his possibilities, so far above the common mean and yet so reverently devotional before The Master — before a being who has suffered voluntarily still more than he, for the same ends and for the obtaining of greater responsibilities.
And from the almost simple drawings of beginners, who in their first meditations obtained some rays of the Great Light, to the marvellous pictures of Sadananda or the chiselled statuettes of Flamel, everything speaks of the same thing: of the world of spirits and of universal forces, “which is closed to us” for those who, opening their heart to Its Light, open at the same time that Golden Door of their own by which they are to enter at the very instant when their voluntary sacrifice shall have purified them sufficiently, and their disinterestedness shall have made them worthy of the company of the “unselfish”.
Other drawings — by Jemard, in the third room — are like delicate filigrees, in whose lines of extreme simplicity but magnificent delicacy are expressed the mysteries of the “relations” between being and being, between plane and plane, between force and force.
He moves us with his “SMILE OF THE CLAY”, of that black clay which seeks and succeeds in smiling at the Sun by means of the flower born from it — like an evil man who seeks to make grow the little plant of good which, in a crack of his clay, waits only for the moisture of a disinterested tear or the sunbeam of a good wish, to spring up and grow… Great geniuses pass through the atmosphere of the Earth, gliding with their majesty of longer cycles above the transitoriness of the small forms that move upon our globe.
And Jemard, in some pictures, synthesises the whole road from the beast to the man, from the plant to the star, from instinct to illumination, with his serpents — sensual some, spiritualising others — which always end by offering the flower of human love to the rose of spiritual love.
And Sadananda, synthesising marvellously the possibility, the means, the effort and the result, sets before our eyes, before the mind, before the soul and in the spirit the “complete lesson”, in his pictures “THE ETHERIC TEMPLE” of the mountain, “THE MIDNIGHT OF THE YOGI”, “THE ADORATION OF THE PORTAL”, “THE FULL MOON OF VAYSAK” and “THE BIRTH OF THE INNER CHRIST IN THE HEART OF MAN”.
p. 19Prostrate your soul before the Sanctuary, and prepare your Spirit to receive, as a sacred deposit, the keys of the spiritual world. Withdraw — into YOURSELF, into YOUR REAL SELF — in silent meditation, even when your body must follow the usual course of the day's labour. Join yourself, in spirit, to the great celebrations; little does the name they bear matter.
Whether you feel the sweetnesses of the renunciation of the Lord Buddha and his infinite goodness, or feel more the perpetual offering of himself made by the Divine Nazarene — that is still a distinction of form or of time. But the important thing is that you feel, that you revere, that you understand, and that you FOLLOW HIS ROAD — the road of YOUR Master or of Your Spirit, always in search of Truth and Light.
If you accomplish it, you will find what Sadananda showed in his last picture: “When the Inner Christ is born in the Heart of Man”… There, doubtless, is the Purity of the Ineffable Lotus; there, in truth, is the Perfumed Rose; there is the marvellous serenity of the Lake at which the Initiate drinks Truth; there is the spontaneity and the innocence of the new-born Child; there are the terrible thorns, the blessed thorns that HAVE FLOWERED INTO WINGS — into wings that carry you, in definitive flight, towards the Radiant Star, the LIGHT made Man, the Word made Action in Harmony with its Principle.
If I wished to synthesise the Exhibition of the GIDEE, I would say with the great Kunrath : “ORA et LABORA” — for that is what it is: Labour and Prayer. 19

La Venerable Figura del Maestro Cedaior
Por Jehel S. I.

Enseñanzas de Surya, S. I.
Hallamos a:

Janusirasana
Asuri Kapila. S. I.

Estas enseñanzas van dedicadas a todas aquellos que deseen llevar una vida sana;

Pasan algunos años, empieza ella a engordar perdiendo,

Por PITÁGORAS, S. I.

Verdad – Naturaleza
Recordando…
Al muy querido Vyasa, azul mensajero
del año 1935. – MAYA, S:: I::

Por un S:: I::
Me
