p. 1YEAR 1 · JUNE 1942 · Nº 2 — In the pamphlet distributed at the beginning of 1942 by the Martinist Order there is the picture of the Venerable Master Maharishi, of whose Ashram Maya spoke to us in the last number of “La Iniciación”. In the picture one sees, upon a divan, a beautiful and robust body dominated by a most noble head.
One's attention is drawn by the sculptural purity of the body, the perfection of its proportions and the line of the abdomen, the mark of a long cultivation of muscles and plexuses by gentle and enduring processes; attention is drawn also by the little squirrel which, so shy in general, seems so restfully happy upon the Master's leg; but more than all, what impresses the sensitive is the nobility of the head, a true head of a pure Rishi, powerful and gentle, in which one feels the habit and the power of thinking and meditating deeply and without effort, in which one identifies at once the physical Temple of a most elevated Thought, the dwelling of a luminous Spirit.
It is upon that Venerable Personality that I wish today to offer some rapid notes. Sri Ramana Maharishi was, when young, the law student, son of a noble family, of whom Maya spoke in her preceding article. As a student he felt no love for the studies he was pursuing, and his brother, also a student, remarked to him on one occasion: “If your thought is always directed to spiritual things, why do you persist in these studies?
The truth of such an observation awakened in the young man a profound reflection, and the consequence was that he departed, secretly, from his house that very night, leaving a letter addressed to his family asking that they waste neither time nor money in seeking him, because he was going to seek THAT which his spiritual vocation indicated to him.
Without resources, with three rupees quickly spent, he threw himself into the adventure and followed the impulse that carried him ever forward; he walked, he covered leagues upon leagues, days and months, seeing, observing, seeking and finding satisfaction in none of the teachings, the endless commentaries which, from the most diverse sources, he gathered in his pilgrimage.
And from valley to valley, from mountain to mountain, from region to region he went, without the inner Voice giving him rest. Inflexibly it directed him towards the Sacred Mountain, the Red Mountain, the Mountain of ARUNACHALA, celebrated in the traditions of India for its sanctity, for having been, from time immemorial, inhabited by Elevated Beings, Holy Yogis and Initiates of the elevated categories.
Arriving at the Temple of Arunachala he felt that there he would find what he sought, and such was the intensity of his feeling, so sincere the faith of his soul, that before entering the Temple he abandoned EVERYTHING, even his own clothing, and with body naked and soul open he entered the Temple, resolved not to leave it again without having found the Light.
The priests of the Temple, thinking that the persons who came there on pilgrimage would not accept the presence of this figure, always in meditation, completely naked, so entreated him that they obtained that he should wear at least a small loincloth, the only garment he has worn from that day to this.
p. 2Little by little the young thinker noticed that the visits of the faithful and of pilgrims did not allow him the necessary silence, and he withdrew to less frequented places of the Temple, to the corridors and courtyards, in which he was seen in meditations and ecstasies ever more frequent, ever more prolonged.
Mischievous boys, as there are everywhere, threw stones at him or struck him, without his stirring from his meditation; and on coming out of it he caressed them, and gentle words came from his lips. He took refuge below the Temple, in the cave of which Maya spoke to us, where the creatures and the wild beasts came to visit him and already respected the elevated Presence.
It was in those times that the priests, perhaps naturally, exploited his presence to the benefit of the Temple.
Whether to spare them that error, whether for other reasons, the young ascetic withdrew to the Mountain itself, into a well-hidden cave in which there had lived, for years far more numerous than human life generally lasts, a Holy Yogi who, when he passed to the other side of life, left his remains in the very cave where they buried him, it being understood that such a body ought to remain there, for many and holy reasons.
In that cave the ascetic Maharishi lived for years; he left it only to go begging some food from time to time, until even that ceased, when a good woman of the neighbourhood took up the custom of carrying it to him at the cave at regular intervals. The young yogi was frequently seen in the mountains of the sun, remaining in meditation or ecstasy for hours together, with his eyes fixed upon the Sun.
Such a fact, significant for those who “know”, caused elevated yogis and learned pandits to begin coming from afar to consult him, and some had obtained from Him answers which resolved problems that years of study had not made clear to them; the fame of the ascetic spread through the region and beyond it. The mission of the MASTER was beginning.
He had to accept, little by little, an ever greater number of disciples and visitors, and from the need of sheltering them the Ashram was born, for Maharishi wanted nothing for himself. But the disciples understood the need to allow those who sought the presence of the Master the possibility of remaining near his dwelling.
The Ashram of Arunachala was the lodging of the students, in which the Master also came to reside, with all the goods that they finally made him accept: the loincloth, the water vessel and the bamboo staff; the only goods he really possesses.
The fame of Maharishi grew, and he already saw himself obliged to accept being called the MAHARISHI, that is to say “GREAT SOUL, GREAT SPIRIT”, a name which has always been reserved in India for Those who are really descendants of the holy and wise Rishis. Maharishi kept only the name by which his most intimate disciples designate him.
And his fame spread until it reached the ears of Maharishi's mother, who thought that the mysterious yogi might be her lost son. She made the painful journey, arrived at the Ashram and, recognising her beloved son, begged him, by her mother's love, to return home, now that he had the spiritual treasure he had sought so much and for which he had abandoned everything.
p. 3For many years the disciples saw that holy woman care for the Master with that double affection of mother and of disciple; and when the road of her life was ended, the tomb in which she then rested upon the Mountain was, and is always, adorned with the flowers that all bring to venerate the memory of the Woman who permitted the Incarnation of the Master and who surpassed her mother's love in homage to the Light.
In the Ashram, in the principal room, one sees upon a divan a beautiful and robust body, dominated by a most noble head. So do those who arrive see him; and having made the usual greeting, simple and harmonious, of the hands joined by the palms, they separate them, that opening of the arms signifying: “My soul is with yours”. And they seat themselves in the usual posture, with legs crossed beneath the body. All look at the Master.
The eyes of the Maharishi fix upon a point; no one knows what he is looking at, but the ecstasy gives to his gaze and to his aura such power that all feel themselves IMPROVED, all know that there, in that moment, He helps them to rise into the state of meditation, to accomplish the solution of the problem he always sets his disciples: “Who are you?
And that “Who am I?” which each disciple has to live drives the Being back into its innermost folds, to seek what IS and what only appears to be. The search continues, days and days, weeks, months and for some perhaps years, until the moment comes when, as the Maharishi says: “The wheel of thought stops. The Light enters”. A magnificent complement to the phrase of Patanjali: “Yoga is the prevention of Chitta from taking diverse forms: Vrittis”.
But the stage that the Maharishi teaches us to seek is no longer that one: the fixing of thought upon an object with ease. It is higher and more difficult: it is that of arriving at the Thinking that does not think, at the Perceiving that does not feel; at that explosion of Light which inwardly floods the whole Self… MAYA told us, in a previous article, that the Maharishi had healed thousands of persons merely by looking at them.
Some also know of notable facts, such as that of the woman who, having lost in two or three days all her relatives to the plague, was so full of grief that she knew sleep no longer and retained no energy for living. They brought her into the presence of the Master. She spoke, she recounted, she lamented, she let all her grief break out, she asked for solutions, for consolation… The Master, for a time, said nothing.
Afterwards, gently, he suggested: “I will weep your grief with you”. And that Being, whom nothing can any longer wound or make suffer, because he is already liberated from human preoccupations, “wept with the unhappy woman” for some moments… and the miracle was done. Peace penetrated progressively into the wounded heart and peace took possession of the unfortunate woman… and the Ashram had one disciple more of Serenity and of Active Silence.
On another occasion I shall tell you something more of the Venerable Master.
p. 4He who has not begun to think daily more of others than of himself does not yet know where The Way lies. He who thinks much of others and very little of himself has found the Way. He who thinks of others, who unites his thoughts to Universal Life and NEVER thinks of himself, IS THE WAY. – Jehel.
p. 5Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism (Continuation) (Teaching of Jehel) THE TEMPLE OF THE APPRENTICE — In almost all the Rites, the Temple of the Apprentice Mason is a long quadrangular hall whose walls are named, respectively: NORTH, SOUTH, EAST and WEST, to show that the environment is UNIVERSAL.
The floor of the Temple is composed of large alternating tiles, white and black, an evident image of relative Good and Evil, upon or between which we have to walk through life, and which are both “necessary and co-existent”, since they form the very “floor” of the visible world, of terrestrial life, and, for those who know, of the whole WORLD OF FORMS, principally of the densest and most visible.
The walls of the Temple, from the floor to the moulding that separates them from the ceiling, are red, an evident image of the astral plane or plane of forces, where “incarnation” and “disincarnation” proceed in their true sense, that is, the Sacrifice of passing from the World of Principles to that of concrete and material Forms, or vice versa.
The ceiling is generally composed of a blue vault bearing the constellations of the Zodiac, various stars and the planets, except the Sun and the Moon. On the side of the door that leads to the outer or profane World, the Storms are close at hand: a beautiful symbol for the initiate, and deeper still for the Initiator or Divulger of any esoteric path or truth.
From what we have already seen of this Temple it is deduced that it is the representation of the Universe, with its three worlds interpenetrated in Total Life, since they are in one single thing, the Temple, image of the Way of Total Life. But these planes are different in manifestation, as their separation into floor, walls and vault shows.
It should further be noted that floor and walls are forms of two dimensions, that is, planes which CUT one another and produce ANGLES, a symbol of struggle and of contrasts. The ceiling, on the contrary, is a segment of a spherical vault, that is, of a SPHERE, a perfect and regular form.
The fact of its being a “segment” shows that the Temple refers to OUR UNIVERSE, which is also indicated by our Zodiac; and from this it is deduced that the TOTAL SPHERE to which the segment belongs would be the TOTAL UNIVERSE, the sum of all the Systems, our own included.
On the walls, on reaching the height of the moulding that marks the end of the wall and the beginning of the vault of the ceiling, there runs a thick cord which has along its whole course 81 knots. These 81 knots symbolise the following: 9 is the number of the Initiate or of any Initiation particularly considered; 9 times 9 gives 81, and is the representation both of the Union of all Initiates and of Initiation.
Total (81 is equal to 1 plus 8, which is again Nine), which is composed of all the partial Initiations, or better said, gives them origin or animates them. Of such a cord, on each of its ends reaching near the Door of the Temple, the ends descend to the height of a man's head. There the ends of the cords are frayed, to show the mason that the elemental Initiate is one of those little
p. 6threads which are part of the total cord, which together they form, and which are therefore also a particle of that Great Truth or Universal Initiatic Current which the Cord itself represents.
To finish with what the walls contain, we must still consider three important symbols: On the wall of the Orient, situated behind the Altar of the Venerable, one sees, to the right of the Venerable, the SUN, and to his left, the MOON, that is, the two heavenly bodies that most directly influence terrestrial life. The SUN, giver of life and source of all vital and positive force in our terrestrial manifestation. Source of EMANATED Light.
The MOON, source of REFLECTED Light, governing all that is passive and receptive, the whole material face of the things that “contain” the life of the Sun on our small planet. Synthetically: the Sun and the Moon show the Law of Polarisation in its most REAL, most living aspect, at its own sources, so that the Initiate may meditate and know whence he ought to draw his energies. According to the Pole that directs his efforts.
Between the Sun and the Moon, from the moulding where the cord is, and exactly from the central point of that cord, descends the curtain that constitutes the decoration of the throne where the Venerable is seated. And on the upper part of such a curtain, forming an equilateral triangle with the Sun and the Moon, one sees, in almost all the Rites, a luminous triangle, of blue or white glass. Lit by a small lamp behind the glass.
Upon the luminous transparency there is painted, according to the rite, one of the three following symbols, which signify the same thing seen at different heights: Either a letter “G”, with rays, image of all creation, as we shall see when studying the degree of Companion.
Or the Tetragram, in Chaldean or Aramaic letters: Iod-Hé-Vau-Hé, the quaternary name of the Great Architect of the Universe, whose occult meaning is the key to all higher kabbalistic study. Or the Aramaic letter “I” (iod), which in the Hebrew and Egyptian initiations, as in those of ancient India, was the point of departure of all creative manifestation. The initial letter of Iod-Hé-Vau-Hé, of INRI, of the name of Jesus, etc….
We thus verify that, whichever of the three symbols it be, the Masonic Lodge always places above the Venerable an image representing the Supreme and Universal Divine Wisdom, interpreted by the human mind through symbols thousands of years old. Let us descend one step in our observation; let us come now to the part concerning the Human Realisation of such Doctrine upon the Earth, that is to say, on the human plane.
We have already seen that the “floor” upon which Humanity is to “operate” (to work) is that alternating mixture of Good and Evil symbolised by the white and black paving. Upon that “floor” there are “furnishings”, that is to say “fixed places”, functions in other words.
Beneath the Supreme Symbol (the luminous triangle) is the throne where the Venerable is seated, who represents Supreme Wisdom manifested, on the human plane, by the Supreme Hierophant of the Temple. To his right and left, near the columns situated on either side of the door, at the other end of the Temple, are placed the altars where the WARDENS are seated.
p. 7all of them IN MAN. For this reason he is near the Column “J” (JAKIN), which represents POWER AND FORCE, the masculine and positive pole. Near the Column “B” is the altar of the 2nd Warden, human representative of Beauty, that is, of Form, of Matter, of Realisation.
And it is very beautiful that this symbolism of Masonry has not said directly Matter, Realisation or Form, but rather BEAUTY, showing that the Initiate must not be able to conceive any Form, realisation or objectivation that is not BEAUTIFUL, that is to say, true, adjusted to the Doctrine. For this reason that altar stands near the Column BOHAZ (“B”), which signifies Beauty, Form, etc….
The summary of the placing of those three altars or functions shows the Masonic conception of the human realisation of Universal Harmony: to set out from Wisdom in order, with spiritual, moral and even physical Force, to realise Beauty, Harmony.
It is at the same time the explicit expression of the Three Planes that compose Man: Spirit or Wisdom; Soul or Force of Life and of Feeling; Beauty and Form, that is to say, Body and material means of action.
But in order to be in reality magically balanced, the Masonic Temple had to have on the “floor”, that is, on the human plane, the synthetic manifestation of that Supreme Wisdom which Man cannot comprehend, symbolised by the luminous Divine Triangle. And so it really is: before the altar of the Venerable there is another small triangular altar, at which the oaths are sworn and the initiations to the various degrees are performed.
Upon this altar there is a book, which ought to be a volume of ALL THE SACRED SCRIPTURES REVEALED TO HUMANITY in the various epochs and races.
But modern Masonry, for special reasons, has for a long time used only the Bible, and such Bible is always open during the session at the page of the Gospel of Saint John, which begins with the words: “In the beginning was the Word…” I feel deeply that the readers may not be able to reach as far as such a symbol goes; it is an affirmation always threefold, like everything, which I shall try to summarise without lifting the veil of the arcana too far: 1) – Every Practical Key lies in the knowledge of the Human Word.
2) – Then follows the Word of the Revealer, who best manifests the Divine Word to you. 3) – Perhaps, one day, that will bring you to hear the Divine Word directly. I have said all I could say. Let him meditate who will. Let him take from it what he can.
In any case, I ask all to consider that in the Masonic Temple the only “objects” (I must call them something) that stand on the CENTRAL LINE of the Temple are the following: The Luminous Triangle — the Venerable and his Throne — the Gospel of the Word… Afterwards that line continues to the Door of the Temple… and is lost in the profane world… if indeed it is lost.
In some Rites, in the middle of the Temple, on the floor, upon the central line, there is also a panel on which are drawn the tools of the Apprentice, which are, as we shall see later, simple commentaries applying the general doctrine already set forth. Let us continue the examination of the Temple. Let us look more closely at those two columns that rise to right and left of the door as one enters.
p. 8cylindrical part of the column, which has a height twice as great as the base. It is the image of the intermediate world, astral or of the forces. The column ends, in its upper part, in the capital, a “flowered and delicate” manifestation, image of spiritual things. Upon that capital, according to the rite, one or three “pomegranate” fruits rest.
The pomegranate is a fruit, beautiful already in its outward aspect, of delicate skin and of vivid and vital colours. The membrane once removed, there appears a series of “grains”, all transparent, full of a reddish liquid like human blood, and all also perfectly “united”.
It is one of the most beautiful images of Masonic symbolism, for it makes evident that the ideal sought by that Order is the purity and the union of its members in the most vital part of human existence.
The placing of the pomegranate UPON the column, dominating everything, shows that WITHOUT UNION, WITHOUT PURITY, nothing will be accomplished initiatically. (To be continued) “The Triangle is the universal symbol of the particular laws that have produced substances”. “There exists no material fact that does not carry within itself an intellectual truth”. “The revivification of the will is the principal task of all guilty beings”.
Louis Claude de Saint Martin. INITIATION serves to raise the Soul from material life, diffusing the LIGHT within it. Proclus.
SMALL THINGS — Little joys that sweeten my life, / Little lights that illumine my night, / Small little flowers that gladden my garden, / Tiny drops that quench my thirst… / If I were to despise you because you are small, / Perhaps I should be left without other consolation; / Because great joys, resplendent lights, / A profusion of flowers and torrents of water, / Do not always offer us their precious gifts, / Do not always bathe us with their brightness.

p. 9Practical Course of Judicial Astrology (Teachings of SURYA, S.I.) (Continuation) — PAPUS continues: “To understand well the way in which the ancients conceived the physiology of the celestial bodies, it is indispensable to possess some notions of astronomy. Lacking this astronomical knowledge, treatises on astrology are often Chinese puzzles. Suppose, then, that you are, a little before midday, in a field in the neighbourhood of PARIS.
What do you see? The sky, above your head, and a horizontal circle that bounds your vision all around you. This circle is the Horizon. The sky above your heads represents, well enough, a great hollow hemisphere in which, for the moment, you see nothing but a few clouds and the Sun climbing slowly towards the culminating point of that celestial sphere.
When the Sun is at that culminating point it will be exactly Midday at the place where you find yourself. Imagine now a great semicircle passing through that point at which the Sun stands at midday, cutting the horizon to right and left, and you will obtain what is called the Meridian, circle or semicircle.
The Horizon, a horizontal circle, and the Meridian, a circle — or better said a semicircle — in a vertical plane, cut one another, as the figure (A) indicates.
But the Earth is a round mass, or nearly so; while one of its halves is lit by the Sun, at the moment when the Sun marks Midday, the opposite half of the Earth is in a cone of shadow and in Night, and it is exactly Midnight at the apex of the cone of shadow when it is Midday at the apex of the cone of light. Thus it is night beneath your feet, on the other side of the Earth, when the midday Sun shines above your head.
Figure – B – will give a clear idea of this most important fact. In the example given by PAPUS he refers to Paris, that is, the NORTHERN Hemisphere. For us in the SOUTHERN Hemisphere the contrary happens: when at midday we look at the Sun we look NORTH, we have the SOUTH beneath our feet, the EAST on the right and the WEST on the left — an important fact to note.
p. 10Let us note carefully the so-called Cardinal Points. When the Sun is on the Meridian and you look at it, or at least turn your face towards it, you have the Midday or South in front of you; the North is behind you, or more exactly beneath your feet, the East on the left and the West on the right.
Let us note that such a position is the contrary of what is seen on geographical maps, which are established with the North seen from the front, as happens at Midnight in the Northern hemisphere and at Midday in the Southern Hemisphere. All astrologers establish the horoscope with the Midday or South facing the observer. It is essential to remember this particularity.
To guide oneself upon the roads of the earth, markers have been placed with figures indicating the distances in kilometres. How can we guide ourselves in celestial space? In a very simple way. The celestial vault has been divided into bands called degrees. The visible half of the celestial vault comprises 6 zones of 30 degrees each, which gives us 180º for the visible half and 180º for the other half. This completes 360º for the entire sphere.
The various heavenly bodies travel along that celestial road at different speeds. It is as upon the Earth, where the motor-car and the countryman's cart, setting out at the same time from a village, do not pass at the same time before the first kilometre marker, since the car goes much faster than the cart. In identical fashion, in the sky there are swifter bodies and slower ones.
Thus the Earth makes a complete turn of the sky in 24 hours, revolving upon itself. As there are 12 divisions of 30 degrees each, the Earth therefore traverses ONE division every TWO HOURS. By contrast, according to visible appearance, the Sun traverses each division in a month, and a year is therefore needed for the Sun to have gone round the 360º of the sky.
The reader already knows, of course, that it is the Earth which turns around the Sun in a year; but we keep the language of appearances, useful for the understanding of Astrology. Study attentively the figure we shall give further on, which indicates the astronomical divisions of the sky. Each of the divisions of 30 degrees constitutes what astrologers call a House.
The sky is divided by astrologers into twelve Houses, in which are lodged the Signs of the Zodiac, at the rate of one to each House, and the Planets. The division of the astrological Houses is established according to the march of the Sun, that is to say, each House of 30 degrees represents a month of the year.
The astrologers' year begins in March with the Sign of Aries (the Ram) — from 20 March to 20 April — and there is house number one; then comes the second with the Sign of the Bull, and so on according to the figure. For the clarity of this elementary study we suppose that the Houses and the Signs coincide exactly, which really happens only for persons born in the first degree of Aries or the Ram.
We have kept this confusion between Houses and Signs in order to facilitate the study of the static elements of Astrology. Further on we shall make the observations useful for explaining how the first house changes sign according to the date See note 1 at the foot of the preceding page.
p. 11of birth. Let the already advanced astrologers not protest, then, for the present; this observation is made to indicate to them the reason for our current teaching. Three houses indicate a season.
Thus spring is indicated by Houses 1, 2, 3, called Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and (in the northern hemisphere) they run from 21 March to 21 June, where summer begins, indicated by Houses 4, 5, 6, called Cancer, Leo, Virgo, in relation to the Signs of the Zodiac, and running from 21 June to 21 September. Then autumn begins with Houses 7, 8, 9 and the signs Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, which run from 21 September to 21 December.
On this last date winter begins, with Houses 10, 11, 12 and the signs Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, that is, from 21 December to 21 March, when spring begins again with the entry of the Sun into the sign of Aries. (Let us note here and now that the Sun no longer enters, in our epoch, the zodiacal sign of Aries on 21 March. It entered there when the zodiac was established by Ram, some twelve thousand years ago.
Owing to the precession of the equinoxes the Sun now enters the Sign of Aries from 15 April to 15 May, and does not return to its primitive place except every 26,000 years. We say this to spare our readers astronomical errors, and we shall now return to Astrology.) It is indispensable, for the serious investigator, to learn by heart the names of the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac and the number of the Houses they represent.
ASCENDING AND DESCENDING HOUSES — As the Houses run from number 1 to number 12, one half of them is placed in the northern or septentrional half of the celestial sphere: these are the Septentrional or Ascending Houses, running from the East or first House to the West or sixth House. Houses 7 to 12 are placed in the meridional part of the sphere. These are the Descending Houses.
The Signs of the Zodiac are divided exactly like the Houses, into Ascending or Septentrional and Descending or Meridional Signs. The Ascending run from the first to the 180th degree. The descending from 180 to 360. THE ANGLES — Each of the Cardinal Points determines an Angle, in which the corresponding House is placed. Thus Aries and the First House are in the Orient and determine the Oriental Angle or ASCENDANT.
This term is very important and must be remembered. House 4 and the zodiacal Sign of Cancer form the Septentrional Angle (Nadir). House 7 and the zodiacal Sign of Libra form the Occidental or Descendant Angle. House 10 and the zodiacal Sign of Capricorn form the Meridional Angle. Midday or Midheaven (Zenith).
The four Houses of which we have just spoken — 1, 4, 7 and 10 — are Houses of the Angles, or ANGULAR HOUSES, and indicate the four Cardinal Points. Each House that follows an Angular House is called a Succedent or Fixed House. The FIXED Houses are therefore those numbered 2, 5, 8 and 11.
p. 12Finally, the Houses that come after a Fixed House are called Cadent, Mutable or Common Houses. The CADENT Houses are therefore those numbered 3, 6, 9 and 12. All this is summarised in the following figure: (To be continued) — Lo cielo i nostri movimenti inizia, / Non dico tutti, ma, posto ch'io il dica, / Lume v'è dato a bene ed a malizia / e libero voler che si fatica / Nelle prime battaglie col ciel dura / Poi vince tutto se ben si nutrica. Dante Alighieri. “The Divine Comedy” – Purgatorio XVI, line 73 and following.
p. 13Progressive Course of Asana Yoga (Continuation) (Teachings of Asuri Kapila, S. I.) — The science that studies the doctrine of “Yoga” is called the yogic science; the man who obtains visible and palpable results, and who comes to assimilate that science in his heart and mind, is called a “yogi”.
The hermetic schools that teach the yogic sciences in India are called Yogacharya schools, which translated from Sanskrit means mystical schools directed by an Acharya. There the Yogangas are taught and practised, which are divided into eight stages: 1st ASANA – 2nd YAMA – 3rd NIYAMA – 4th PRANAYAMA – 5th DHARANA – 6th PRATYAHARA – 7th DHYANA – 8th SAMADHI.
There are yogis of 4 degrees, which are: PRATHAMKALPIKA – 2nd: MADHUPRATIKA, he who has attained the state of RITAMHARAPRAJNA or the power called Madhupratika, that is, the conquest of the Siddhis. – 3rd: BHUTENDRIYAJAYA, he who has obtained power and dominion over the senses and all the elements of nature, etc. 4th: ATIKRANTABHAVANIYA, he who has attained KAIVALYA, that is, unity, isolation, liberation, emancipation and final beatitude, which is the total result of the yogic science.
There exist different Yogacharya hermetic schools, as also different Gurus who teach different Yogas. These last are divided into distinct stages, beginning from the purely material path of realisation and going as far as the mystical, philosophical and contemplative path, and that called the path of liberation. Naturally, each of these paths requires a lifetime to practise it, to know its philosophy and to acquire the practice.
Yoga is subdivided into a multitude of yogas. I shall name the best known and also some of those not known. The first stage is that called Asana-Yoga, which treats of the bodily attitudes and postures prescribed for meditation, the word Asana in Sanskrit being the equivalent of “posture” in our language. The second stage is Hatha-Yoga, which treats of the interior form of Yoga.
He who practises this yoga uses physical means for his own spiritual development. It is the opposite of RAJA-YOGA.
The end that Hatha Yoga proposes is the same as that of Raja Yoga, but the methods differ from one another, owing to the difference that exists between the one and the other of those two yogas, which is the following: the adherent of the first believes that the Mind (Chitta) obeys the PRANA, whereas the adherent of the second (the Raja-Yogi) believes that the Prana obeys the Vritti, the latter opinion being the exact one.
Those who devote themselves to Hatha Yoga are called Hatha-Yogis, some of them devoting themselves exclusively to practice without any spiritual aim, having as their sole objective the beautification and perfection of the body, with the acquisition of certain physical powers of an inferior order.
p. 14The third stage is known by the name of Bhakti-Yoga. Bhakti corresponds to devotion; it is the path of Love and of Devotion. This is a purely mystical stage of Yoga. He who practises it is known by the name of Bhakti-Yogi. The fourth stage corresponds to Jnana-Yoga. Jnana corresponds to “knowledge”; it is the path of Wisdom.
This Yoga seeks to obtain complete dominion over the senses of the mind, bringing the latter to concentrate upon the contemplation of the Divine Spirit in order to receive Illumination from Him. He who practises this Yoga is called a Jnani-Yogi.
The fifth stage is known by the name of Raja-Yoga, which corresponds to the system of the development of the psychic and spiritual powers, and has as its end the union of one's own higher Self with the Universal Self. It is the stage devoted to the regulation and concentration of thought; it is a system of occult education that comes to give dominion over the inner as well as the outer. He who practises it is called a Raja-Yogi.
The sixth stage is called Mantra-Yoga, which is a kind of Yoga consisting in reciting and knowing certain spoken formulas with attentive meditation upon their meaning. Mantra signifies “enchantment”, mystical formula, spell, sentence, measured word. He who practises it is a Mantra-Yogi. The seventh stage is known as Kundalini-Yoga.
Kundalini signifies “serpentine”, “coiled”, and is the power of life, one of the forces of Nature, the power that engenders a mysterious and powerful light which predisposes to spiritual and clairvoyant development. The serpentine or spiral power is a divine power latent in all men; it is enough to say that electricity and magnetism are no more than manifestations of it. Once developed, this power can create and can also kill.
He who practises this yoga is known as a Kundalini-Yogi. The eighth stage is known as Laya-Yoga, which is a species of Yoga consisting in contemplating, with special attention, some exterior object, or rather the inner sound perceived on closing the eyes. It is also the practice in which the mind can pass from one state of consciousness to another called “unconscious”.
The ninth stage is known under the name of Tattva-Yoga (the different principles of Nature in their occult meaning), in which the yogi identifies himself with these principles and handles them at will, being able to perform true prodigies, such as levitation, spontaneous combustion and all the other phenomena known within occultism.
Now that we have spoken, very superficially, of all the Yogas in order to give a general idea of them, we shall begin first with the course to be called “Progressive Course of Asana Yoga”. The end of life is the realisation of the inner Self. All the systems of philosophy of India have a single end: the liberation of the soul through perfection. Every man seeks happiness and flees pain; but no one teaches another how he should do it.
It depends upon each one of us to find happiness, because the true nature of man seeks its conquest strenuously; yet the satisfaction of desires cannot bring true peace to the mind, even though the nerves and the senses be gratified for an instant.
p. 15Just as fat poured upon the fire stimulates it further, but for an instant only, so also happiness intensifies desire and renders the mind still more restless and bitter. No one can expect true and continuous happiness from objects that are conditioned in time; all are perishable. The happiness obtained through sensual objects is deceptive and transitory.
For a philosopher it is not happiness; it is like treating the skin when one feels an itch, without inquiring into the true cause of that itch. Sensual happiness is always followed in such a manner by severe pains, fear, sins, jealousy, grief, sadness, restlessness and every kind of misery and calamity, that it well deserves the name of illusion.
In the intervals of materialistic worldly activities there sometimes comes a moment of tranquillity and peace in which this question appears in our mind: “Who am I? “Why am I here? “What is life and the universe?
The serious seeker begins to meditate and to inquire in order to obtain an answer to such profound problems; he begins to seek the company of wise persons, he studies books, meditates, reflects, purifies his mind, and sometimes obtains, alone, the highest knowledge of his inner Self.
By contrast the man whose mind is constantly saturated with worldly passions fails in everything, and is irresistibly dragged towards those tumultuous currents of death and of rebirths. The path is hard, dangerous, full of thorns, but possible to accomplish. Those who come to accomplish it obtain the divine grace of the supreme Self. You will have the whole spiritual world behind you, which will protect you and guide you constantly towards it.
That path will lead directly towards the regions of infinite happiness, supreme peace and eternal life, where fear and sadness do not enter, where all distinctions of caste, colour and creed disappear… because you will find yourselves in Truth itself, where divine Love vibrates constantly and where man will find the satisfaction of his elevated desires and of the highest justice.
The four great and principal paths called Karma, Bhakti, Raja and Jnana-Yoga are not antagonistic but complementary. And the different methods of relaxation can only be in harmony with them, because the end of religion is likewise to educate and develop in man his heart, his intellect, his head and his hands. Only thus will he obtain perfection. The development of one side alone serves no purpose.
Karma-Yoga removes evil, purifies the mind and develops action. Bhakti-Yoga destroys hatred and develops the heart. Raja-Yoga harmonises the mind and renders it capable of concentrating upon a single point. Jnana-Yoga removes wickedness and ignorance, develops mental force and leads to the knowledge of oneself.
Asana-Yoga leads to health and to longevity; when well and methodically practised, its practice regularises the action of the heart, the lungs and the brain. It also promotes perfect blood circulation and the good digestion of food; the liver, the kidneys and the other internal organs will work efficiently; it removes, in a word, all illnesses.

p. 17Chromotherapy in Medicine — For years now, some physicians, following the first scientific investigations initiated by Dr. Edwin Babbitt, have been seriously studying the therapeutic influence of colours upon the sick in general and upon those of the nervous system in particular.
These experiments have confirmed what ancient and modern esotericists, Western and Eastern, have always been affirming, and it is with particular satisfaction that we observe that one more portion of the old esoteric doctrine has begun to enter the sphere of modern science.
There is no doubt whatever that colours exercise a psychic influence, determining special mental and emotional states, and, vice versa, that mental and emotional states determine corresponding colours in the human aura. Widely known, despite the physiogenesis being unknown, are the cases in which the continued sight of one and the same colour awakens determinate mental and emotional states.
Thus, for example, red awakens thoughts and emotions of rage or at least of annoyance; green, a sensation of calm and of well-being; white and sky blue, a religious feeling; violet, a devotional state; black, sadness and funereal thoughts; grey, melancholy and psychic depression, etc…. On the other hand, clairvoyants can observe variable colours in the human aura according to the psychic and emotional states.
Thus for example red is visible in passionate emotional states; green, when there are feelings of sympathy and love of nature; white, in cases of spiritual thoughts; yellow, in states of mental elaboration, etc….
If from these calorific influences of a general character one passes to chromotherapy, that is, to the use of determinate fundamental colours and of the whole infinite gamut or scale of their tonalities corresponding to determinate mental and emotional states, it is observed that it is possible, in the case of an illness which provokes electromagnetic disharmonies in the tissues, to act upon these and restore to them their harmonic and dynamic equilibrium.
And it is logical to think that the therapeutic result must be constant and proportional to the harmony between the calorific tonality as therapeutic cause, and the physical or psychic disequilibrium as effect of the physiological disharmony.
The conclusions at which Dr. Babbitt arrived after his numerous experiments may be summarised in his own words, as follows: “The centre of the electrical action that calms the nerves is in the violet colour; that of the action that calms the circulatory apparatus, in blue; that of luminosity, in yellow; and that of heat, in red.
“That is not an imaginary division of properties but a very real one, for red involves a thermal principle and is the colour of fire, just as blue and violet involve an electrical principle. “We have, then, many modalities of aromatic action or influence in gradations of heat, light and electricity”.
We do not intend to set forth here, in this brief article which aims only at a practical effect, the theories that investigators of this most interesting problem have formulated as to the explanation of the chromatic therapeutic effect; we wish only to give the results obtained by many esotericists, so that they may be experimentally studied and verified.
p. 18Before all, it must be made clear that the therapeutic effects obtainable depend: 1) Upon the therapist. 2) Upon the exact tonality of the colour.
As to the first, in the case where the colour were to influence not by itself but by the mental projection of the operator, it is clear that the more powerful that projection is, and consequently the more capable the therapist is of concentrating and projecting, the more efficacious will be the influence of the colour upon the patient.
As to the exact tonality of the colour, it proves very arduous for the operator to establish it for a given pathological state, because of the difficult evaluation of that state and, on the other hand, because of the difficulty of being able to project colours having the same vibrations as the auric colours, given that it is generally material colours that are projected.
In order that the operator may project colours as close as possible in vibratory tonality to the auric ones, he must have a personal experience in this respect, besides projecting them, as we have said, with the greatest possible force.
If the ideal conditions of the experiment were all realised, it is clear that the therapeutic effect would be more rapid and more efficacious; but given the frequent impossibility of assembling all the factors that favour the experiment, those who wish to give themselves to such experiments may hold to the following conditions: 1) To have in view discs of cardboard or of any other material upon which different colours are painted.
This facilitates for the operator the mental concentration of the colour to be projected upon the sick person, who may be present or at a variable distance. 2) To perform exercises of mental concentration, the practices of which are described in almost all treatises on human magnetism, in order to favour the concentration and the projection of the colour.
3) To project the colour into the aura of the sick person, so that from his aura it may radiate to his mind and so determine the state desired, whose beneficial and harmonising effect will not be slow to make itself felt in his organism.
The colours to be projected in the infinite illnesses are, classifying them not by their causes but by their effects, the following: Pathological states whose effects disturb the equilibrium of the nervous system. STATES OF EXCITATION. Sedative colours: all the shades of violet. STATES OF DEPRESSION. Exciting colours: Bright Red. ATONIC STATES. Tonic colours: Grass Green. HYPO-ATONIC STATES. Stimulating colours: Yellow and Orange.
Pathological states whose effects disturb the equilibrium of the circulatory system. STATES OF EXCITATION. Sedative colours: various tonalities of Indigo Blue. STATES OF DEPRESSION. Exciting colours: Bright Red. ATONIC STATES. Tonic colours: Grass Green. HYPO-ATONIC STATES. Stimulating colours: Light Yellow.
p. 19Each and every projection must end with the projection of the colour SNOW WHITE. The investigators who have experimented much with chromotherapeutic influences have obtained clear and constant effects in the following illnesses with the following colours: (1st – Bright red. General debility (constitutional, infectious, etc.) (2nd – Light yellow. (3rd – Orange. Feverish states……………………………… Tonalities of blue. Influenza and complications …………………….
Bright red. Bradycardia …………………………………. Bright red. Tachycardia ………………………………… Violet. Hypertension ………………………………... Tonalities of blue. Inflammations ………………………………. Tonalities of blue. Asphyxia ………………………………………. Tonalities of blue. Neurasthenia …………………………………. Violet. I express my wishes for the sincere and fertile experiments that these data may stimulate in all investigators. Essay on the relations between the celestial influences and the life of metals, vegetables and human beings (Continuation and conclusion) — Before continuing this article I must summarise, rapidly, what in these first fifteen days of May (the date at which I write this) has already come to pass of that which was contained in the forecast published in the previous number of “La Iniciación”, concerning the Conjunction of Saturn and Uranus at the end of the Sign of Taurus.
Earthquakes: in the north of Africa, Spain or Portugal. There was, in fact, a fairly considerable earthquake in Lisbon. Explosions in chemical factories. There were several. The most important was in Belgium, in which the loss of more than 200 human lives was lamented, and more than a thousand
p. 20injured, precisely by an explosion in a chemical products factory. In Montevideo there was also an explosion of grave consequences in a Laboratory. Storm in the United States. (Influences upon the first degrees of the sign of Gemini) There was a cyclone in which, unhappily, the number of victims and the material damage were great. Beginning of chemical warfare.
The press in general has publicised the mutual threats which the peoples at war make to one another of proceeding to the use of chemical weapons, precisely at the period in which we indicated it. Increase in the cruelty of hostilities. There has been seen the beginning of the German offensive in Russia and Japanese attacks on new zones of the Orient. Changes in the attitude of the oppressed.
Reports of rebellions and protest attacks have become more substantial and frequent in almost all the peoples subject to foreign domination. Personal crimes in general. The newspapers have reported a great quantity of facts of this kind, and if the readers observe, they will note that the greater part have been by wounds in the region of the neck and of the chest (regions of the human body governed by Taurus and Gemini).
It seems that the number of the “coincidences” is too great not to draw powerfully the attention of the impartial reader to the relation between the celestial influences commented upon and the facts recorded which, as will be observed, took place upon: The body of the Earth: earthquakes and cyclones. Material things: factories and gases.
Human bodies and their passions: crimes, wars, etc. It seems to me, then, useless to insist upon the polemic, since for centuries such proofs have been piling up daily.
Let those who prefer a comfortable, but not always intelligent, scepticism continue to cultivate it; and for those others who, as the cover of the Review says, wish at last to KNOW, I shall publish periodically small lists of forecasts of every kind, so that they may realise the reality of the same and especially THAT THE CELESTIAL INFLUENCES determine such and such effects.
It will thus be a practical complement to the Course of Astrology which our collaborator Surya gives us in “La Iniciación”; and I shall also have the pleasure of answering, in the Review itself, the enquiries of a general character — that is, of interest to all — which readers may wish to make in the astrological field.
To conclude I shall indicate for the readers' observation three interesting dates: 15 May: a fairly disagreeable day in every sense. 20 May: a very well aspected day; it should bring good things. 25 May: a fairly good day, but of strong influence. Take care. We shall comment, in due course, upon the facts that may have characterised those influences and their relations with the celestial aspects. Leo de Mascheville.
p. 21Notes on my journey to the countries of the Orient (Continuation). The Obligatory Visit to the Temple of Madura. As we took our leave, the Master Maharishi said to us: “Will you visit the Temple of Madura?” – “No,” we answered, “for we have already lost the opportunity of doing so, which was on our arrival in India”. “A pity! So you will not visit it?... We left Tirumannamalar by train at 10 at night, travelling to Madras.
On buying the tickets at that small station the clerk informed us that at twelve we must change trains at Virupullan and that at 5 in the morning we should be in Madras. When the train reached Virupullan, one of my companions asked a traffic inspector who had stationed himself beside our carriage which was the train for Madras.
Immediately afterwards another of my companions asked him whether one changed trains at that station for Madras, to which questions the inspector asked us to follow him to the other platform, where, he told us, the train for Madras was indeed waiting. After he had placed one of us in one carriage and my husband and me in another, the train set off.
At six in the morning we awoke, surprised that we had not yet arrived, since at Virupullan we had been told that we should reach Madras at 5 in the morning. We asked several times of different passengers and all told us that we were mistaken about the time, for that train reached Madras at half past eight.
After a while our companion came, the one who had been placed in another carriage, telling us also that he had been informed that that train reached Madras at half past eight. We were reassured, since all were agreed that that train was going to Madras, only that it did not arrive at so early an hour.
But what was our surprise when, believing that we were now arriving at Madras, the train entered a great station on which an enormous sign said: MADURA. We could not believe what we saw; but so it was.
Everyone had been mistaken, and the traffic chief above all, for despite two different persons having asked him, he had sent us in the opposite direction — as if, taking a train at Durazno and believing we were arriving at Montevideo, we found ourselves at Artigas. We were 800 kilometres from Madras and had another 12 hours of travel to reach it. But the strangest thing was that no ticket inspector had come, as happens continually in India.
We got down, complained to the stationmaster, and he was extremely astonished at the traffic inspector's error, above all at his not having asked for our tickets when placing us on the train. He told us that he regretted what had happened, but that he could not accede to our request to send us back free of charge.
We then complained to the General Traffic Chief, who arrived a while later on a train — a Hindu gentleman who gave us every kind of apology and made out the three tickets for us for the night express, adding: “During the day you may take the opportunity to visit the city and the Temple, and in the remaining hours you may rest in a room of the station which I shall have opened for you, from which you need only ring the bell and they will bring you from the restaurant whatever you ask for”.
p. 22pleasure of being able to admire the famous Temple of Madura, about which Sri Ramana Maharishi had asked us on our departure: “Will you not visit it?”… Resigned to what was happening, we made our way, a little later, to the city; and I shall let one of my companions, better versed than I in the history of those Holy Places, describe the visit to you: “Salam!...
Salam!... to unforgettable MADURA, the holy city of Southern India, the Tamil Benares, the oldest city of the South of India. Like all the other ancient cities of India, Madura has known how to survive the destructions of time and to escape the spoliation of the Muslim invader, being witness to numerous dynasties. The city of Madura has been, during the last two thousand years, the centre of Dravidian civilisation.
Some have called it “the Athens” of Southern India. It is the seat of the Tamil Academy, towards which all the students of the south make their way, and Madura became famous for its Tamil poets. It is one of the few cities that still maintain their contact and connection intact with the past, and its growth still proceeds upon roots firmly planted more than 2,000 years ago.
Its history is therefore closely bound up with that of Southern India and may be divided into three periods: the ancient, the medieval and the modern. Madura was governed from primitive times by the PANDYAN kings. The Mahavamsa (the famous Ceylonese chronicle) describes the first king of Ceylon (500 years before Christ) as the son-in-law of a Pandya king of Madura.
Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador at the court of Chandra Gupta Maurya (320 years B.C.), describes Madura as governed by a Pandya princess who enjoyed the revenues of 365 villages which paid, on a fixed day of the year, their tribute to that Queen, who had an army composed of 500 elephants, 4,000 horses and 13,000 soldiers.
This city was very well known to the ancient Greeks and Romans and is mentioned in the Ptolemaic Tables as being the seat of the Pandya kingdom of the South. Ptolemy refers to Madura as “the Mediterranean Emporium of the South”. The word madura signifies “sweetness”; tradition says that Siva was so pleased with the building of the city that he poured nectar, “madhu”, upon it, from which its name Madura derives.
What immediately surprises one on arriving in this city is the complete absence of hotels, of restaurants, banks, etc…. that is, of everything a European expects to find when he comes from Ceylon or from Madras. Madura is, typically, a Hindu city, without the least trace of anything European. One rubs shoulders with the heterogeneous assembly of priests and merchants, in which a European is immediately the cynosure of all eyes.
The only means of locomotion consists of small carts drawn by oxen and called “djerkas”. We made our way towards the Temple, which may be classed, with impartiality, among the architectural marvels of the world. To reach it we must follow the great thoroughfare called Permal-Kohil, passing before the great sacred tank that bears the same name. We then continue along the important street of the West Tower, which leads to the colossal Temple.
p. 23The Temple is erected in the centre of the City, situated in the middle of the principal thoroughfare. In truth the city has grown having the Temple for its nucleus, so that Madura is a veritable “Temple-City”. Of the 9 towers the Temple has, 4 are the most important, being between 60 and 152 feet in height. They are the towers of the North, South, East and West, almost similar in form.
The West tower is covered with innumerable small statues representing figures from Puranic history. The North tower contains miniatures of the various Gopuras and Vimanas (Temples) found throughout Southern India.
The East tower is dedicated to Siva and would seem the most important, having a very curious history which I shall relate: During the reign of Chokkanatha-Naik, the officials of the palace levied, without the King's knowledge, an illegal tax upon the servants of the Temple, who decided that one of them should sacrifice his life as a protest against that injustice.
And so one of those holy Servants of the Temple threw himself from the East tower, dying instantly, crushed by so great a fall. In this way the unjust tax was abolished thanks to this sacrifice. But the memory remained upon the Tower, and even today it is believed to be “haunted”. At the foot of that tower is the famous stairway of 18 steps, which runs from the feet of the god Karuppanaswami to the door of the Sanctuary itself.
That small Temple is used very frequently when it is necessary to seal certain solemn promises and to swear sacred oaths, it having been noted that when on such occasions a man or a woman utters a falsehood and has passed over those steps, he meets a violent death within 18 days. Such a fact has been verified many times.
The South tower, the highest, being 152 feet, displays at its base certain pillars known by the name of “musical pillars”, consisting of 22 rods carved from a single block of granite. Such rods or slender pillars emit musical notes when struck.
At the foot of this tower there is another small sanctuary, called that of Kaiédel Mottai Hopurathan, who is the guardian deity of that tower, considered also as guardian of the public health, for she is customarily propitiated in time of epidemic. Continuing on, we find ourselves before the so-called Sacred Tank of “the Golden Lotuses”, considered as something most sacred.
A bath in those waters will give health and will even wipe away the gravest sins. The said tank has borne that name ever since Indra worshipped Sundareswar with the beautiful golden flowers that grew in its water. The tank is surrounded by spacious corridors, which are used for the religious ceremonies of the great Durbars (festivals). The legend says that a heron was induced to come to the famous tank of “the Golden Lotuses”.
It bathed in its waters and flew around the Pagoda; feeling hungry, it was tempted to feed upon some of the many little fish it saw in the tank.
But at the very instant when it was about to seize one, its eyes “were opened” to the enormity of the projected offence, and the bird implored God to kill its sinful body and receive its soul into the regions of Virtue, and asked also that the tank should cease to produce fish and frogs so that in the future there should be no further temptation there for hungry birds.

cruzadas bajo el cuerpo. Todos miran al Maestro. Los ojos del Maharishi fijan un punto;

representa PODER Y FUERZA, polo masculino y positivo.
Medite quien quiera.

Tal vez me quedara sin otro consuelo;

Signos Ascendentes o Septentrionales y descendentes o Meridionales.

ASANAiii – 2º YAMAiv – 3º NIYAMAv – 4º PRANAYAMAvi – 5º DHARANAvii – 6º
PRATYAHARAviii – 7º DHYANAix – 8º SAMADHIx.
Existen yoguis de 4 grados, que son: PRATHAMKALPIKAxi
– 2º:
Bhakti corresponde a
La cuarta etapa corresponde a la Jnana-Yoga. Jnana corresponde a “conocimiento”;
1)
presente o a distancia variable.
2)
