SABER”
La Redacción.

p. 1YEAR 1 · MAY 1942 · Nº 1 — Presentation of the Review “La Iniciación”. The words and the acts of a human being are always the reflection of his individuality. Any collectivity whatever, a society of whatever nature it may be, has an individuality also.
The “GIDEE” (Independent Group of Esoteric Studies), a society of cultural purpose, initiatic in its substance and eclectic in its form, ought to have a mouthpiece — initiatic likewise in substance and eclectic in form. That mouthpiece is the Review we present today: LA INICIACIÓN. Its name is traditionalist, being the same as that of the review founded by the GIDEE organised by PAPUS in other times and places.
But if the substance is traditionalist or initiatic, the form is adapted to our epoch; the pages of La Iniciación are, from this moment, open to every contribution that may be of general interest in the search for Truth — that Truth which is not conceived without regarding the most varied aspects of life, without approaching the most diverse aspects of knowledge, without making the synthetic study of those partial truths that are called Science, Art, Religion and Philosophy.
Its editing obeys, therefore, the criterion of interesting equally the one who is on the road called “THE INITIATION” and all those who seek, in Science, in Religion, in Beauty (Literature and the other manifestations of Art), the particular form of the manifestation of Truth best adapted to their temperament, culture or profession.
The very title of the Review, “LA INICIACIÓN”, makes evident that purpose of universality of search, of absolute tolerance of exposition. For how would it be possible that anyone should claim to arrive at Truth, at the Initiation which is Truth Lived, had he not first opened his mind and his heart to the widest and most complete scientific, religious and philosophical tolerance, and to all the manifestations of Beauty?
For that reason too there shines upon the cover of the Review that SUN which lights and quickens all, without particularities of schools or of creeds, without predominance of any kind. To live, it is enough to exist, to breathe, to absorb freely that breath which, if it is not life itself, is at least and assuredly its indisputable means of manifestation in our human condition.
To live spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally too, it is likewise and only necessary to breathe, to absorb that breath of Light which is Truth or Knowledge, which reaches us like the rays of the Sun through life itself, and which we absorb according to our state of health and our physical, moral, mental or spiritual disposition.
The review “LA INICIACIÓN” intends to receive the greatest possible quantity of every ray of Light, of every manifestation of Truth, of Knowledge, of sincere Emotion that its contributors can bring to it. To present the most diverse aspects — even, perhaps, the most apparently opposed — of that disquiet common to all investigators of Truth, of Life in a word: that is the mission our review sets itself as its sole purpose. It will do so, perhaps, modestly — 1
p. 2as regards the volume and circulation of the review; but the essential thing is that it does so with nobility of orientation, falling into no particularism, and still less into any personalism. For that reason too it will gladly accept correspondence from readers who wish to criticise any aspect of the Review, so as to collaborate in a constant improvement.
Such as it was conceived, such as it is possible for the present to present it, it already constitutes a means of relation among those who devote some moments to study and to meditation.
It constitutes also, from this moment, a means of expression for those who, having learned, meditated, lived and felt something that seems to them useful and interesting to relate to others, thus have the possibility of doing so freely, without limitations of a doctrinal or sectarian character.
“LA INICIACIÓN” is not a business either, nor anyone''s means of livelihood; it is, on the contrary, a modest creation of some persons of good will who make “something” with a good intention: that of serving all who may take an interest in such an undertaking.
The monthly organ of an INDEPENDENT society of thought, La Iniciación greets all — initiated or not, belonging or not to any society — with the same fraternal, HUMAN greeting, and nothing more; and it asks them to read “LA INICIACIÓN”, or to write for it, with the sincerity that binds the cordial relations of all well-intentioned persons.
To all its readers “LA INICIACIÓN” wishes for itself: to LIVE in union and in Peace with those who come into relation with it. And, to close by summarising the whole practical programme of “LA INICIACIÓN”, which is proper to the “GIDEE”, we dedicate it today to its readers in the words of the Master PAPUS which appear on the cover: “TO ALL THOSE WHO, WEARY OF LEARNING, DESIRE AT LAST TO KNOW.” — The Editors. AWAKENING.
A tolling of bells that shadows life in prayer. A pealing of bronze which, as a prelude, reaches devout souls. Symphony of metal, mystic concert, gods speaking an eternal language. An incidence of sounds which, like birdsong, are lost in the waking of the morning. Krish — Life disquiets you, and you take refuge in the temple of illusion. The heart speaks to you, and you kneel upon the path of egoism. Your being calls upon you, and you silence it with prayer. Krish — 2

3
p. 3Vivisection, or veneration towards all the Masters? The title of this article may seem, and is to a certain point, somewhat brutal. But more lamentable still, and more brutal yet, is the sad reality to which it alludes.
Day by day, if we dispose ourselves for a few moments to pay attention, we verify that many persons of the most diverse schools claim to have understood the works of certain Masters, or to be in contact with them, or to be their disciples — directly, or by following the particular initiatic school they direct.
In reality one observes that a number of those same persons dissect the works of the said Masters with a spirit of sharp and often malignant criticism, or pretentiously point out errors which the works or the attitudes of those Masters seem to them to contain.
In the first place, from the simply logical point of view, such an attitude is not consistent, since the Master, if he is one, at whatever height one may wish to consider him, is necessarily APT — that is to say “PREPARED” — for his mission, and therefore “within it” he is perfect.
In other words, he represents a RELATIVE perfection, a perfection characteristic of a certain state of evolution of a certain function; and all those who still have need of THAT MASTER are really inferior to Him — if not in ESSENCE, which is not possible, then at least and certainly in CONSCIOUSNESS.
Therefore their criticisms are directed towards an “object”, philosophically speaking, which they cannot really analyse, and for that very reason they are vain and slight.
Under other and graver aspects — that is, in the MORAL and VITAL aspects of the question, and we know that Morality and Life are to a certain point the same thing and belong to the same plane — how can such persons think it is given to them to receive the teachings of the said Masters?
If it is a question of Instructing Masters, incarnate and present in a physical body near us; or, a thing more impossible still, to merit the Presence of the Venerable Masters who manifest from afar, or from the Invisible — how can they believe that possible, if they are ignorant of the ESSENTIAL CONDITION, which is to create a BOND between the Master and themselves? And that bond — what can constitute it?… Only Veneration, Respect, Love.
But a Love so real, so living, that it is a projection of our own most elevated thoughts and desires towards the Instructor or the Master; that it is a total respect for the Function he exercises in relation to us.
If we wish to divide the problem to make it clearer, we shall have, very generally, two series of Beings who help us on our Road of Evolution: the lesser — that is, the Instructors, men who know more or are better than we in many respects, which does not mean that they are perfect, but does mean that they have realised something of what we aspire to realise, that they know something of what we still do not… From what can there result, in such Instructors, a true interest in the Disciple?
a nosotros mismos.
Humanidad; LOS VENERABLES MAESTROS.

p. 4transmit them, and who for that purpose make sacrifices evident to every disciple willing to observe the Instructor with Love.
If we consider now the case not of the Lesser Instructors but of the VENERABLE MASTERS — of Those who AT A DISTANCE “see in our aura all the acts and thoughts we have had since the last time they looked upon us”, let us say so to simplify the problem — it is easy to realise that, while we may deceive ourselves, They cannot be deceived as to the progress we may or may not have made, nor as to the poor REALITY of our good intentions.
And, despite the Goodness that always and necessarily characterises a Master, They cannot transgress UNIVERSAL LAWS, and therefore cannot cause to be “fixed” in us MORE TRUTH, MORE BEAUTY, MORE ELEVATION, MORE QUALITY than we ourselves seek and merit — in other words, more than we ourselves have CONDITIONED ourselves to receive.
For that reason, to walk firmly on the Road of Initiation, that respect is needed, that VENERATIVE sentiment for the Teachings, for those who explain, comment upon and transmit them in their elementary part (Instructors), and still more for THOSE WHO LIVE THEM INTEGRALLY, who ARE the living Teaching itself within Humanity: THE VENERABLE MASTERS.
Love and Veneration for the Ideals and for the Masters who Represent them are, then, the Waymarks of the Road for him who follows the INITIATIC PATH. Dr. JEHEL, S. I. BIBLIOGRAPHY. We have received for the Library of the Martinist Order of South America the following works: Nº 733 — THE STARS AND THE MYSTERY OF LIFE — by Sr. Julio C. Hirian Corda.
The author, President and Founder of the Rosicrucian Fraternity of Uruguay (an affiliate of The Rosicrucian Fellowship of California, U. S. A.), treats with affection and accuracy of the celestial influences in relation to many fundamental themes, such as health, evolution, karma and the stars, amulets and talismans, etc. Very worthy of note is his study of the Age of Aquarius, where his affirmations accord with the whole Tradition.
A dedicated disciple of the beautiful Fraternity founded by Max Heindel, the author makes evident his understanding of the marvellous doctrine of the Rosicrucians. This small volume (80 pages) precedes the work in preparation by the same author, to be called: ADVANCED LESSONS IN ASTROLOGY.
Unnumbered — Various Messages of the Argentine Cultural Committee of Buenos Aires, all very fine for the diffusion they make of facts and knowledge that create the spirit of PEACE and UNITY OF AMERICA.
We single out the message of Magdalena Moctezuma, Delegate of the Committee in Mexico, and the one detailing the proposals of Dr. Ricardo Levene, Member of the Board of the Argentine Cultural Committee, to the Ministry of Public Instruction of his country, concurrent with the norms of the Brazilian Commission for the teaching of American History and Geography.
Prácticamente le retira dinero, alhajas y debería sacarle todo metal en contacto con la piel;
purificado por las preparaciones y buenos hábitos tomados en el plano físico;

p. 5Commentaries on the First Degree of Martinism (By several Unknown Superiors of the Order).
The Teaching of the Martinist Order, wishing to show its adogmatic and yet monotheistic character in essence, and wishing also to bring into relief from the beginning its filiation with the Egyptian and Pythagorean teachings — from which resulted the Freemasonry organised by the direct influence of the Rosicrucians in 1717 — gives, in the first degree, an exposition of Masonic doctrine, so that the new Martinist may learn to render tribute to the Masonic spirit, which has without any doubt been, in the modern era, one of the greatest roads of human thought towards religious and philosophical tolerance upon a deist basis.
Let us examine, then, so-called SYMBOLIC MASONRY — that is, the most widespread, that which in all Masonic Rites is taught in the first three degrees, with very small differences of presentation and a notable identity of substance. These first three Masonic degrees are called APPRENTICE, FELLOW CRAFT and MASTER MASON, and it is with them that we shall occupy ourselves in these commentaries.
The Masonic Initiation. (Teachings of Jehel.) When a man (almost all Masonic Rites do not admit women) wishes to enter Masonry, and the reports on his honourability are favourable, a day is appointed for him to be initiated.
When the moment arrives he is led to a room beneath the Temple, called the Chamber of Reflections, a place gloomy in aspect, whose black walls bear paintings of skeletons and legends recalling the vanity of material existence and the certainty of death. There he remains shut up for a long space of time, occupied in writing the answers of the “TESTAMENT” he has to make.
The questions put to him are principally: “What duties has Man towards the Divinity, towards Humanity, and towards himself? Certain Rites ask more: that he make a synthesis of the results of the experiences he WOULD BEQUEATH to Humanity, as a PHILOSOPHICAL TESTAMENT, were he to “die” at that moment, as “might eventually befall him in the trials”.
Let us note from the outset, for it is of the utmost importance, that the essential points which Masonry places before the Candidate for Initiation from the very first step are these: 1) THE PRIVATION OF LIBERTY in the bowels of the Earth. 2) THE IMAGE OF DEATH — a certainty, and a theme of meditation to which every man ought to give himself.
3) The indication that the only important thing in the life of Man is the EXPERIENCE he accumulates and which he can, if he seeks it, “BEQUEATH” to others while he lives.
Así preparado el candidato, se le pregunta por última vez si desea todavía ser masón;
humanos.

p. 64) The threefold indication of DUTIES before the Divine, the Human and the individual — the magnificent TERNARY key which will be developed in all that follows in the Initiation. Let us note also that in proceeding thus, Masonry affirms from the outset its Deist ground; and on this particular it is well to recall that almost all the Rites, in accordance with the old Masonic postulates, DO NOT ACCEPT candidates who declare themselves atheists.
What Masonry conceives is INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY of worship towards that Divinity — never personalised nor defined, and designated only under the denomination of SUPREME ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE, a term to which we shall have to return much later. While the candidate fulfils what has been imposed upon him in the Chamber of Reflections, the Masons above, in the Temple, have begun their Ceremonial, ritually opening the “works” of the session.
In sum, that opening, were it well made and with very pure intention, would be an INVOCATION and an EVOCATION: an Invocation to the Superior Forces of the Divine Planes, and an Evocation of the astral Manifestation of those forces through their three aspects — Wisdom, Strength and Beauty — to which also we shall have to return.
The Masonic brother called the “Terrible Brother”, a transparent image of the ancient guardians of the inner part of the Pyramids, then “prepares” the candidate to take him into the Temple. For that, he leaves him “neither naked nor clothed, and free of metals”.
In practice he removes money and jewellery, and ought to take away every metal in contact with the skin; but this is no longer done today, because it has been forgotten that in the Masonic Initiation there is an ASTRAL MAGNETIC INFLUX which the candidate ought to receive, and for that he should carry no metals impeding the fluidic distribution in his “aura”.
To symbolise the “neither naked nor clothed”, they roll up one leg of his trousers and remove one shoe, and likewise leave bare the opposite arm and the corresponding part of the chest. One must be ignorant of all symbolism not to see there a complete teaching: 1) Of magnetic polarisation — by the opposition of a foot (BELOW AND TO THE RIGHT) and an arm and chest (ABOVE AND TO THE LEFT).
2) That the “neither naked nor clothed” shows the special state in which the Candidate ought to be: “NEITHER NAKED”, because he is incarnate in his body, is covered by his profane convictions, is isolated from Truth by his past of ignorance and prejudice, etc.; “NOR CLOTHED”, because to be “CLOTHED”, from the initiatic point of view, is to have the HABIT of the initiate — that is, on the three planes: the TUNIC that distinguishes him and the Body purified by the preparations and good habits taken up on the physical plane; the moral CUIRASS of long-cultivated virtues and the strength to resist the hard trials of Initiation, on the moral or astral plane; and the spiritual raiment of Knowledge and Spirituality, “covered or CLOTHED IN LIGHT”, as was said among the Rosicrucians, on the spiritual plane.
8
p. 7intuitive (internal) at the second step, that of psychic or astral search. That Reality is ILLUMINATIVE (internal) when he has sufficiently dilated his inner Being, so that within it the DIRECT LIGHT OF THE DIVINE PLANE may find room.
For all these reasons the candidate is asked to pay attention to the Ceremonies to which he is being subjected, because all HIGH TEACHING, in Masonry as in any other Initiatic School, lies ALWAYS more in the SYMBOLS AND CEREMONIES than in the written or oral Instructions, which contain only the theoretical and concrete mental (intellectual) part.
They lead the candidate to the Door of the Temple, at which he is ordered to knock, insisting, until with a terrible noise that Door opens. It is the image of the fact that Truth and Light come only to those who SEEK them and PERSIST in that search. An image, too, that when the Door opens there is something terrible and frightening which “SEPARATES” the Initiate from the profane for ever.
There follow, then, the trials of a physical character; the candidate had already passed the trial of EARTH (shut in the Chamber of Reflections); and now they make him leap, still blindfolded, from a small height, while noises like thunder are heard, etc. — symbols of the trial of AIR.
Then they make him pass through that of WATER; and in performing each of them there is explained to him what the symbols of Air and of Water or Ocean may signify morally and socially.
Unhappily there has been, in recent decades, a tendency to reduce the interpretative reach of those symbols, giving them a merely social and moral signification, without showing the candidate that they are in reality the key to the understanding of the Fluidic Cycles (Water — the Great Waters of the Kabbalah, the realm of Maya, etc.) and of the Divine Heavens, the AIR (the LIGHT, etc.).
That part being ended, the candidate is invited to take a SWEET drink which will turn bitter “if his intentions are not pure”. Things are so arranged that the liquid always turns bitter, and the candidate generally shows it in his face, so that he is admonished on suspicion of unwholesome curiosity. If he withstands that trial well, it is known that there is in him a man of will and of self-command.
This we say without taking into account — because Masonry no longer does — that such a BITTER CUP is the likeness of what was done in the Egyptian Initiation, to show that what is sweet at the beginning (EASY LIFE, pleasures, passionate love, etc.) is always bitter at the end, and that what is bitter at the beginning (self-command, asceticism, voluntary altruism) generates peace, serenity, happiness — that is, the definitive “sweet” state.
If we wished to go further, we might say that such a drink also signifies the SOMA of the true initiations upon Earth, and further still the NECTAR OF FORGETFULNESS which we shall all be obliged to drink before REINCARNATING…; but let us not anticipate.
On the candidate''s returning from the altar of the Venerable (President of the Lodge), where he had undergone the trial of the Cup, he passes through the Purifying Fire, the last trial of the Elements — an evident symbol that only by the INTERNAL FIRE (pure desire, effort at self-overcoming) is Initiation attained, and by the Fire of Sacrifice, Illumination.
p. 8If his declaration is firm, he is taken outside the Temple to be put through the trial of the “threat”.
For a few seconds, during which the bandage is removed, he sees a coffin in which a Mason with a bloodied chest appears to have been killed by all the others, who — covered with masks, cowls or the like, according to the rite — threaten the Candidate with their swords, warning him that should he fail in his obligations as a Mason, death would reach him however well he hid.
Such a ceremony, far more than a physical threat — which has no reality, in the sense that Masonic society does not “murder” its perjured members, a thing done only by certain purely political rites such as the Carbonari, who were not properly Masons — far more than a physical threat proceeding from men, was made, a thing many Masons today are ignorant of, to show three threats which HANG ALWAYS OVER THE HEAD OF THE INITIATE LIKE A TRUE SWORD OF DAMOCLES: 1) The misuse of initiatic knowledge, through pride, vanity, egoism, etc., always leads to the ruin of physical health and in certain cases even to death.
2) The “perjured” use of that same knowledge brings the moral threat, which runs from the disregard of which the perjurer becomes the object on the part of his former “brothers”, to the fact that the inner being of the perjurer is poisoned by an ever greater vitiated tendency, or by a remorse so intense that it makes him suffer as though he had a very blade in his heart.
3) The most secret part of the symbol is the reality of the true threat directed against him who goes AGAINST A CURRENT at once human — that is, magnetic; moral — that is, astral; and spiritual — that is, universal; a current he had promised to aid, and which, by giving him more knowledge, made him more conscious and therefore more responsible also.
True initiates know what a shock of return is, in every sense, and to what death — physical, moral or spiritual — it can lead… This last trial ended, the neophyte is dressed again as he came from the street and, still blindfolded, is taken into the Temple, where, after the Venerable consults and obtains from the two Wardens (assessors of the Venerable) their agreement to initiate him, the bandage is removed and he sees again all the Brethren showing him the Sword — but this time to tell him that those swords will serve to protect him: a symbol of the UNION that existed among the INITIATES of all the Temples in antiquity, and an expression of the union that is still one of the finest characteristics of Masons, even when it hardly ever extends beyond mutual aid in the daily circumstances of life, which is much if it is well done.
Finally, after an oath of silence and of fidelity to the doctrine and to the Masonic institution, he receives the LIGHT, or as it is said Masonically, the TRUE LIGHT, which would be the Real Initiation. Later, in studying the degree of Master, we shall see what that True Light might be.
On the conclusion of the Initiation he is given an apron and two pairs of white gloves: one for himself, that his hands may be “pure” in his acts, and another to offer to the woman he most esteems — a courtesy somewhat cunning in modern Masonry, which “esteems” woman so much that it does not admit her.
del Templo, porque ella es incapaz de recibir directamente la Verdadera Luz;

¡Orar!... ¡Orar!...
Pedirle a Dios gracias y premios.
Para ti, para mí, para los nuestros.
¿Y los demás?
Siempre habrá sufrimientos en la vida.
Y si eso lo se yo.
¿Cómo querer delicias entre espinas,
para nosotros dos?
¿Qué derecho tenemos a más dicha
Tú, los nuestros y yo?
Miro en torno… ¡qué páramo!...
Infinitas almas que no conocen el amor.
Y si Dios quiere que haya desdichados.
¿Cómo atreverme a decirle a Dios:
¡Vuelve Señor, tu cólera a otro lado,
Y que me salve yo!...?
(De María Carmen Danieri de Arena).

Curso Práctico de Astrología Judiciaria
(Enseñanzas de SURYA, S. I.)

p. 9It seems that Masonry holds the Mason to be the one who should guide his wife outside the Temple, because she is incapable of receiving the True Light directly; a procedure well characteristic of a civilisation of inequality, against which all true initiatic orders have always risen, having in every epoch admitted women genuinely capable of being initiated.
At that moment the new Apprentice Mason is communicated the Grip, the Sign, the Word, etc., of his degree, to which we shall return; and he is taught the Step for entering the Temple, which we shall also explain later. He is made to “work” for the first time upon the Rough Stone, with the Mallet and the Chisel — the tools of the Apprentice.
In some rites the new brother is asked for money for the poor and, since it was taken from him on entering, he must confess he has none to give — which is turned to account so that he may meditate on the sad condition of one who cannot help others. We have now, then, a Brother Apprentice Mason in the Temple. Let us look, with his eyes, at what he sees in that Temple which it cost him so much to enter. (To be continued.) WHAT ALTRUISM CAN INSPIRE.
In one of the courses of the “GIDEE”, one of the Instructors gave one evening a fine exposition on personal suffering and on what one ought to be able to feel about the suffering of others. Present was Srta. Margarita de Escalá, our literary contributor, who asked leave to recite the following poem, which we publish at the request of several disciples of the “GIDEE”: To pray!… To pray!… To ask of God favours and rewards.
For you, for me, for our own. And the rest? There will always be sufferings in life. And if I know that, how wish for delights among thorns, for the two of us? What right have we to more happiness — you, our own, and I? I look about me… what a wasteland!… Infinite souls that do not know love.
And if God wills that there be the wretched, how dare I say to God: “Turn, Lord, thy wrath elsewhere, and let me be saved”?… (By María Carmen Danieri de Arena.)
p. 10Practical Course in Judicial Astrology (Teachings of SURYA, S. I.). It has seemed to me impossible that anyone could really take a profitable interest in Astrology without possessing the knowledge necessary to understand its reach on the three planes: the human and concrete, the moral and astral, the occult and spiritual.
For that reason this course will embrace all three parts, giving the highest, it is true, only emblematically at times, so that those who know how to meditate and observe may be the only ones to come to possess such truths — the practical keys to mysterious powers and possibilities.
I shall begin by transcribing the fundamental part of the Teaching of the Venerable Master PAPUS on the Astronomy of the Temples of Antiquity, as it is found in the “Archéomètre” of St. Yves d''Alveydre.
PAPUS says: “The first thing that awakens the human spirit is Nature in its diverse manifestations: the rising and setting of the Sun and of the Moon, the stars shining in the night, and the seasons, the storms, the rainbow, the growth of vegetables, the reproduction of animals and their use by man; all this demands long and serious meditations.
“Let us say at once that, contrary to certain positivists of the profane world, we maintain that all the instruction of the first terrestrial thinkers was given not by childish reasonings but under the direct impulse of the Invisible Beings of diverse planes.
It is direct revelation that stands at the origin of all science; experience comes only later, first to deny the affirmations of the Superior Beings, if only to have to return to them afterwards. Hence the proverb: “A little science turns us from God; much science leads us back to Him. But let us not anticipate.
“Present-day science teaches us that we are the inhabitants of a planet called Earth; this planet gravitates, with some others, about a star called the Sun, which sends heat and life both to the Earth and to the other planets of its system. Those planets are, moving outward from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn (all known to the ancients), Uranus and Neptune, added to the solar system by modern savants.
“Each of these planets may have, in its turn, bodies smaller than itself which revolve about it. These bodies are called satellites. The Earth has one satellite: the Moon. Mars has several, Jupiter likewise, and Saturn is surrounded by a veritable cloud of satellites and moreover by a true ring. All useful details may be found in elementary books of astronomy.
“Each of the stars we see in the sky, and which are called fixed stars, is a SUN with its retinue of planets. By contrast the moving bodies which appear above the terrestrial horizon at certain seasons of the year, and which circulate in the Heaven from one group of stars to another, often endowed with a particular colour, are PLANETS.
“It was by studying first those astral circulations, then the duration of the rotation of the Earth upon itself, the duration of the revolution of the Earth about the Sun, and finally the time of revolution of the Satellite Moon about the Earth, that the basis could be established for the determination of Time and the various systems of calendars. “The SUN appears to traverse in the Heaven a certain road, marked out by groups of fixed stars. These stars are as celestial waymarks surrounding the solar road. In one year — 10
p. 11terrestrial (365 days and a fraction), the Sun passes, according to outward appearance, before all those groups of stars, twelve in number, called SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC, or simply the ZODIAC. Thus the Sun appears to traverse one zodiacal sign per month. “The Earth turns upon itself in 24 hours. During those 24 hours half the terrestrial globe is lit by the sun while the other half is in shadow.
Day is the name given to the time in which the earth is lit, and night the time of darkness. The exact duration of days and of nights varies according to terrestrial country and season, because the Earth is inclined upon the ECLIPTIC. “For its part the Moon turns about the Earth in 4 times seven days and some fraction; during those 28 days the Moon changes aspect FOUR TIMES, which gives us: NEW MOON, FIRST QUARTER, FULL MOON, and LAST QUARTER.
The seven days the Moon requires to pass from one aspect to another form THE WEEK. “The lunar month is of 28 days; the solar month a little more than 30 days. PAPUS continues: “No spectacle could impress the human brain more than the appearance of the stars and planets on a fine summer night. And yet how few contemporaries are capable of really realising the marvels the sky presents to them.
Present-day science shows us how negligible is our little Earth in that immensity of suns diversely coloured (there are red, green, blue ones, etc.) about which gravitate multiple planets laden with humanities. For details, the admirable works of Camille Flammarion on these stirring themes may be consulted.
All this is marvellous; and yet contemporary Science describes no more than the effigies, the outward aspects: it makes an Anatomy of Nature and forgets its Physiology.
Imagine a savant who has just discovered a manuscript written in an unknown tongue, and who weighs that manuscript, measures it, analyses its chemical composition and finally counts with the utmost care the number of lines and characters composing it — and you will have an idea of the manner in which present-day science occupies itself with Nature. Fear of hypotheses has produced an abuse of detailed analysis.
Since the Renaissance the whole philosophical, synthetic part of the sciences has been set aside, exiled far from studies called “serious”, and all the high scientific speculations became hidden, occult things, and constituted what is today called the OCCULT SCIENCES.
The anatomical section of the study of the stars became a science under the name of Astronomy, while for its part the physiological section was relegated to contempt under the name of Astrology. The synthetic section, or Astrosophy, remained almost unknown. The same happened with Chemistry and Alchemy, Physics and magic, Theology and theurgy, the Natural Sciences and Physiognomy, Numbers and Occult Mathematics.
When you see people passing in the street, what interests you is not so much their weight, their dress, the colour of their skin and their gait, as their moral life, the relations of friendship or hatred they may have among themselves, their social laws, and finally their intellectual life.” — 11

NEPTUNO – URANO – SATURNO – JÚPÌTER – MARTE – SOL – VENUR –
MERCURIO y LUNA.
SATURNO – JÚPITER – MARTE – SOL – VENUS – MERCURIO – LUNA.

p. 12Nevertheless present-day science regards the stars as passers-by whose real life is to be ignored, and says they are great material masses reacting upon one another according to their volume and distance. By contrast, Astrology teaches that the Stars are LIVING BEINGS which have friendships and hatreds and influence one another by the fluids circulating between them.
Astrology shows the sky peopled with living beings and intelligent forces, whereas Astronomy shows us, above our heads, no more than an immense cemetery of inert masses and blind forces. Awaiting the official union of the two sciences — of serious Astronomy and occult Astrology — let me indicate the elements indispensable to know in order to understand the books of the ancient and modern astrologers.
“Three orders of objects must be studied: 1) The planets. 2) The signs of the Zodiac and their role as planetary houses. 3) The relations of those bodies and signs with the life and destiny of the beings who live upon the planets. PAPUS continues: THE PLANETS.
“We have seen that the planets turn about the SUN and that, for science, the order of those Planets is as follows: Sun… Mercury… Venus… Earth… Mars… the asteroids of the exploded planet… Jupiter… Saturn… Uranus… Neptune. Astrology, to facilitate its calculations, considers the Earth as the CENTRE OF THE SYSTEM and orders the bodies as follows: NEPTUNE – URANUS – SATURN – JUPITER – MARS – SUN – VENUS – MERCURY and MOON.
In everything relating to ancient Astrology the two planets linking our system to the next — NEPTUNE and URANUS — are set aside, and one operates with the SEVEN PLANETS of antiquity, whose list we advise our readers to learn by heart: SATURN – JUPITER – MARS – SUN – VENUS – MERCURY – MOON.
At the same time as that list is learned by heart, it will be very useful to draw many times the signs deriving from the ADAMIC LANGUAGE or WATAN (see the works of Saint-Yves d''Alveydre): ♄ SATURN · ♀ VENUS · ♃ JUPITER · ☿ MERCURY · ♂ MARS · ☾ MOON · ☉ SUN. (Continued in the next number.) 12

Curso Progresivo de Asana Yoga
(Enseñanza de ASURI KAPILA, S.I.)
GENERALIDADES
Ganges, llamada antiguamente “KAZI o KASHY”ii , hoy BENARÉS.

p. 13Progressive Course in Asana Yoga (Teaching of ASURI KAPILA, S. I.). GENERALITIES. The purpose of the studies to be published in this Review is to make known something of the sublime doctrines of India. We may group these studies under the common denomination of “Methodology of Yoga”.
The aim will be to explain and set out, in a simple and synthetic form within anyone''s reach, the essence of the classical doctrine of Yoga; to make it comprehensible in our language, and to demonstrate the possibility of its practice in the West.
The mysterious science of Yoga was taught and practised by the ancient “RISHIS” in that millenary and sacred city of India, on the banks of the sacred river Ganges, anciently called “KAZI or KASHY”, today BENARES. This millenary science has known how to survive in spite of all the vicissitudes India has passed through, which would seem to have been infected by the wave of materialism of the old world.
In times past those lofty and venerable Masters of Wisdom had in that most ancient and sacred city their “ASHRAMS”, where, gathered with a few chosen disciples, they gave themselves to the high studies of Truth. From there they communicated to the elect the sacred and sublime doctrine of Yoga, which gave to whoever received and conscientiously practised it the knowledge of Life and of the Universe.
Although today the Masters of Wisdom of those sciences — taught by “KAPILA” and “PATANJALI” in the year 700 before our era (the first the author of the SANKHYA philosophy, the second one of the celebrated founders of the Yoga philosophy, a contemporary of PANINI, the celebrated grammarian and principal authority in questions of Sanskrit grammar) — have withdrawn silently beyond the Himalayas, into places safer and truly inaccessible to the profane, before the wave of great materialism and barbarism that seems to have invaded the world, thus making it harder than ever to discover their dwellings and feel the perfume of their presence, yet with all this it does not mean that the tradition has ceased to be transmitted.
There always remain some “CHELAS” (disciples) who still keep alive the fire of that mysterious science as ancient as the world, distributing here and there some crumbs of the Knowledge they themselves had the high honour and privilege of receiving from the venerable lips of the Master.
With these courses the aim is to demonstrate that although the individual be plunged wholly into material life, full of responsibilities, subject to manifold disillusionments — and although “modern” Western man finds himself daily before terrible dilemmas in securing his daily bread and maintaining his family, which is achieved at the cost of great sacrifices obliging him to terrible mental and physical efforts that almost always end by brutalising him — he must remember that he too carries within him part of that divine spark which is a particle of the universal mind, that he is likewise a son — 13
materia mental “CHITTA”xii tome diversas formas (VRITTISxiii)”.
serena y perfecta.

p. 14of the Celestial Father, a part of the Unity; and that in spite of all those problems he too can find the road leading towards a more spiritual life, and know certain truths that will make him perceive that light of the spirit. And thus, applying that knowledge to daily life, he too can be, in a certain manner, a yogi — I mean, do everything one commonly does in the 24 hours of the day with a little more heart, more love and understanding.
And by progressively developing tolerance and fraternity — that is, by applying ever more widely the “DOCTRINE OF THE HEART”, in the street as in the office — they will be able to make of all their acts a true spiritual worship, having the physical body as temple and the mind as ceremonial. WHAT DOES THE WORD “YOGA” MEAN?
“YOGA” is a Sanskrit word meaning literally, translated into our language: to unite, to join, to weld; and it is taken from the root “YUJA”, union. Just as when two pieces of metal are welded they become one, so Yoga, applied to man — who is a part of the divine essence — makes it possible for him to unite with the universal spirit and thus perceive his spiritual essence.
Naturally this condition is obtained by the practice of certain physical and mental exercises which form a whole body of doctrine, divided and subdivided into different stages and degrees which will be studied here, in these courses, and which will be called: Yogas. Many “GURUS” have interpreted the meaning of the word Yoga in different ways; but all agree on its true signification: “Yoga is the union of the human soul with the Universal Soul.
The other definitions only express the same idea in different words: “Yoga is the concentration of oneself with a view to being able to perceive and see what the soul is when the latter is abstracted from matter and mind. Another Master defines Yoga as “the suppression of thoughts”.
But I wish to make a clarification here: that “thought” must not be understood in the vulgar sense of reflection, but must be taken as a way of signifying the consciousness that includes sensibility, imagination and dreams — in short, the whole welter of thoughts continually invading our mind and making it incapable of meditating fixedly upon an object.
As will be seen, the word YOGA has different applications and definitions according to the planes on which it is applied. Yoga, on the mental plane, is the science that makes it possible to increase the capacity of the human mind to respond to higher vibrations, to catch them and thus assimilate the infinite conscious movement which exists and unfolds about our universe.
By yoga the mind is thus converted into a true transmitting and receiving station, into a lucid antenna, fitted to receive and also to transmit messages at any distance.
For that reason yoga is defined also as “the art of projecting thoughts”, since, transformed into a powerful focus of radioactivity, it becomes apt to vivify them and with them to aid the present and the absent, the latter when they find themselves in difficulties and dangers, whether in the terrestrial sphere or on the invisible planes that surround us.

p. 15was Jesus. Another definition of Yoga is the following: a decisive means of spiritual liberation leading to the obtaining of psychic powers, called in Sanskrit “SIDDHIS”, through the development of the latent psycho-spiritual faculties.
The states of ecstasy provoked by that high state of vibration lead to the clear and correct perception of the eternal truths, of the visible Universe as of the invisible — that is, to the union of the divine and superior Self, by means of the practice of yogic meditation.
Then, thanks to this mystical union, man attains a complete dominion over body and mind, frees himself from all the shackles of the material world, and develops certain marvellous faculties, latent in the whole human species, which are naturally the cause of strange and mysterious phenomena that seem supernatural or miraculous to all who do not know their producing cause.
PATANJALI defines Yoga in this brief sentence: “Yoga is the prevention of the mental matter ‘CHITTA’ from taking diverse forms (VRITTIS). This aphorism of the Master is so brief and yet so true in its essence, because it is the first step of Yoga, without which the disciple could not advance.
It means that one must begin with those surges of incongruous thoughts that almost always affect us and take diverse forms, thus preventing man from being able to control the mind and channel it towards a serene and perfect meditation. sus afirmaciones.

p. 16The expression of the human personality in the skin creases of the hands. There is no doubt whatever that between the skin and the central nervous system there exist multiple and intimate functional relations. The skin, in effect, may be considered — if we observe its structure — as a true peripheral brain; a logical analogy, moreover, if we recall that it has the same embryological origin, that is, the ectodermal layer.
There is no reason, then, to be surprised if physiological and psychological, cutaneo-psychic and psycho-cutaneous influences put these two organs into intimate relation.
We do not wish in this article to occupy ourselves with these influences: as examples, cutaneous reflexes of emotional origin, psycho-pilo-motor, psycho-vasomotor and psycho-glandular reflexes, abnormal states of the skin of psychic origin, psycho-cutaneous electrical reflexes and possibly other psycho-terms, etc. Treatises and various publications on human physiology discuss this important theme in detail, and readers may, if they wish, inform themselves by reading the classical treatises of physiology and especially those of GOMEL.
What on the contrary we wish to clarify, if only summarily, is a question much debated between two classes of investigators: the esotericists affirming, and the physiologists denying, the reciprocal influence existing between the skin and the human personality, and especially between the human personality and the skin creases of the hands.
In any treatise of human anatomy or physiology we read, for example, affirmations such as the following: “The centre of the palmar region is furrowed in all directions by creases of locomotion, whose number and direction vary much from one person to another, and in the same subject from one side to the other.
It is notorious to all that, in studying these functional creases — the lines of the hand — some observers, naturally without scientific basis, have believed in all ages that they could recognise the character, the mental aptitudes and, above all, the destiny of the subject under examination.
The investigators of the relations between human personality and skin creases in general, and chiromants especially, affirm on the contrary that the psychic personality influences the creases of the hands, and that if these are known how to be studied and understood it is possible to ascend from effect to cause and so know the character of persons and their destiny, abstracting from time and space.
To the objections of the former — that the lines of the hands are the result of special occupations, or that they are due to the insertions of connective tissue into the underlying osteo-muscular plane and determined by the play of the articulations — the latter oppose other reasons, affirming that the left hand, which works much less than the right, has a greater number of lines, and that newborn children, who naturally have not yet exercised the articulations of the hands in any occupation, nevertheless have a great number of lines.
p. 17their affirmations. In the first place, the skin of each individual differs from that of another, as innumerable morphological and biological data demonstrate. In the second place, each individual can be identified by means of fingerprints, which seems to prove that there is a real identity between personality and skin, since no two are alike.
Moreover, the well-known difficulty of the healing of skin grafts is due to individual biological differences existing even between blood relations, as Lexer has demonstrated. Further still, embryological investigations seem to affirm that the skin creases are already completely developed at the moment when the sweat glands and hair follicles appear constituted — that is, in the eighth month of foetal life.
That the creases are not due to articular movements is demonstrated by the fact that, in cases of ankylosis of the metacarpal joints, they continue to subsist without any evident alteration. It is clear, then, that many are the facts in support of what the chiromants affirm — namely, that psychic influences are what determine the skin creases. By what paths are these influences established?
There is no doubt that it is through the innumerable nervous ramifications of the great sympathetic, or of the peripheral motor and sensory system. The problem is of great interest if we think of the results, and it ought not to be regarded as a Byzantine question, as modern physiologists appear to have treated it until today.
On the contrary, to give an anatomical and functional foundation to these coherent and logical affirmations, old as the world — by means of investigations directed towards establishing by what ways these influences are produced, and what is the medium (nervous fluid, psychic current, the “aur” of the Hebrews, the prana of the Hindus, the astral light of the Martinists, etc.) that permits these relations — is to come out of a state of preconceived ideas whose nature is clearly anti-scientific, and to open oneself to receive Truth wherever it is found, for the advancement of physiological knowledge and the unravelling of the mysteries that still obscure the varied, infinite and interesting problems and phenomena of life.

capilaridad, HACEMOS ESO EN EL MOMENTO DE LA LUNA NUEVA Y SI ES
POSIBLE CUANDO LA LUNA RECIBE MALOS ASPECTOS DE VARIOS OTROS
PLANETAS.

19
p. 18Essay on the relations between the celestial influences and the life of metals, vegetables and human beings. From the old Sacred Science, the marvellous ASTROSOPHY of the ancient temples, modern Astrology — an incomplete inheritance — comes down from the Chaldeans and, in spite of everything, penetrates every day further into the sectors of human activity. Numerous are the profane reviews that have an astrological section.
Numerous also are the reviews of an initiatic character that teach or diffuse it. And if the ancient emperors and kings took no step without consulting their astrologers, it is no less true that TODAY almost all heads of government likewise have their astrological consultants. Were it not an indiscretion, which we cannot commit, we might name great public men of Europe and of the Americas whose efforts are guided by Astrology.
The most refractory to the acceptance of celestial influence are, as always, those most honest men of science who, faithful to their orientation of accepting nothing not demonstrable “in vitro”, have set aside — the majority at least — that science which they qualify as a dream without basis.
Despite such opposition from a certain sector of investigators, Astrology walks on, supporting itself on the one hand upon TRADITIONAL TRUTHS, not all verified but which always guide the search; and on the other upon EXPERIMENTAL AND STATISTICAL VERIFICATIONS — that is, in accordance with the method of academic science. We shall examine in this brief article some of the verifications of an experimental character which may easily be tested.
In the first place let us take the mineral plane, which apparently has the least perceptible LIFE and in which, therefore, it should be MOST DIFFICULT to recognise traces of an eventual celestial influence. To begin with, it must be recognised that metals, for example, do not lack LIFE, as many people believe.
Chemistry has already recognised OFFICIALLY that a metal can be “poisoned” with almost all the poisons that act as such in the animal or human organism. For example, a metal beam into which a violent poison is repeatedly “injected” LOSES after a short time its ELASTICITY, its RESISTANCE — in a word, IT SICKENS.
This appears to demonstrate that any truly toxic substance ACTS — that is, has Action — upon any height of Life, or better said upon BEINGS OF ANY LEVEL OF THE MANIFESTATION OF LIFE; and that from the mineral plane upward. Now, if we take a solution of silver salts and divide it into three parts, which will therefore be IDENTICAL from the chemical point of view, we may make the following curious experiment.
Placing one of the three parts of the solution in a vessel, we put a piece of blotting paper in light contact with the solution so that the liquid may rise by capillarity. WE DO THIS AT THE MOMENT OF THE NEW MOON AND IF POSSIBLE WHEN THE MOON RECEIVES BAD ASPECTS FROM SEVERAL OTHER PLANETS. Result: the liquid rises, but the traces of silver on the blotting paper are few and faint; the figures upon the paper are vague and pale.
p. 19ASPECTED. Result: many more traces of silver, and more marked figures on the paper. With the third part we shall do the same ON THE DAY OF THE FULL MOON, IF POSSIBLE WITH GOOD ASPECTS, AND PLACING THE VESSEL WHERE IT RECEIVES THE MOON''S OWN LIGHT. Result: the maximum possible concentration of silver salts on the paper, the most marked figures, AND OF FORMS WHICH WILL ALWAYS BE PRODUCED UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS OF EXPERIMENT.
The conclusions appear to be the following, if we consider that with salts other than silver the experiment is less intense in relation to the Moon: 1) “THERE IS SOMETHING” that modifies the quantity of silver salts which “acts” in each of the three experiments. 2) “THAT SOMETHING” appears really to be in proportion to the LUNAR FORCE, since it accompanies the growth of the lunar phases.
3) “THAT SOMETHING”, in relation to the Moon, manifests best, on the mineral plane, with the metal SILVER. Now here are two axioms of traditional Astrology: “To each planet corresponds a metal; to the Moon, for example, Silver. “When the Moon waxes, Life is more intense on all planes of life, from the mineral up to the human astral.
We must recognise, to be impartial, that the experiment cited ACCORDS exactly with the two axioms, and that it really appears that SILVER CORRESPONDS TO THE MOON AND, for that very reason, LIVES MORE INTENSELY WHEN THE MOON IS IN ITS FULLNESS OF LIGHT. Let us take another case, still MINERAL, but now in relation to life or to the human organism.
If human blood is drawn and the blotting-paper experiment made ON A DAY WHEN MARS, FOR EXAMPLE, IS STRONGLY AFFECTED OR IN A ZODIACAL SIGN THAT IS ITS DOMICILE OR EXALTATION, it will be seen that only on those occasions can the figures and other verifications relating to the salts of iron be obtained on the paper.
Here the case grows complicated, because this experiment would bring as a consequence ALL THE FOLLOWING, already taught by traditional Astrology: A) IRON is really under the influence of the planet MARS. B) MARS is really more “influential” in certain ZODIACAL SIGNS.
C) The particles of a given MINERAL preserve their AFFINITY with given CELESTIAL INFLUENCES, even when already localised or “ASSIMILATED” into a HIGHER KEY OF LIFE, as for example in human blood. D) All this would give much to think about, and especially about the “MYSTERIOUS CURES” of Paracelsus, who administered medicaments to a certain portion of a sick man''s blood, and the man at a distance received the benefit of such treatment.
It must be added that Paracelsus did everything in relation to the celestial influences.
E) So that our readers may also make their personal observations on Astrology, we will supply them with a “datum” which an astrologer of the Martinist Order has “given” us: On the 2nd of May there will occur the conjunction of SATURN WITH URANUS, which, according to the teachings of traditional Astrology, must be very baleful in many senses: crimes of passion, accidents in chemical factories, the possible and probable beginning of — 19

Grave changes in the attitude of any person or people subjected to pressure. Diseases of the throat and respiratory passages which will manifest in epidemic form in Ireland, Spain and other regions.
Such influence must already make itself felt some days beforehand, but its manifestations should culminate around the 1st to the 4th of May, although the consequences may last long, since this conjunction will still be vibrating throughout 1942. (To be continued.) Léo de Mascheville. NEWS. I — On 6 April we inaugurated the following courses: MONDAY: Krishnamurtian Teaching — Astrology. TUESDAY: Western Cosmogony — Kabbalah.

VII — At session number 90 of the R∴L∴ “PAPUS”, besides intense and numerous phenomena of various kinds, the Presences of the Venerable Masters AMO, MAHARISHI and “THE TIBETAN” were verified, which much encouraged the brethren who dedicate themselves to the service of those Masters.
The “FRATERNAL BOND”. The Fraternal Bond — that is, exchange and collaboration with all those who strive on the Path of Service — records the following activities: I — We attended a fine lecture organised by the Theosophical Society of Uruguay, held at the Ateneo.
The lecturer, Dr. Carlos Stoppel, a distinguished Argentine lawyer and theosophist, sought with talent and originality to demonstrate the MYSTICAL SENSE of that “TOWARDS UNITY” which manifests at present in the field of Law, of the Natural Sciences, of Scholastic Philosophy and, generally, in all sectors of knowledge. It was a most instructive and well-documented lecture.
p. 21Notes on my journey to the countries of the East. THE MAHARISHI. We returned from the mountain after spending some days upon it, and today, seated beneath the banyan, I make some reflections perhaps very familiar to you. India, I say to myself, is an immense book of Wisdom, with as many pages to be read as there are beings who shall come to it. To everyone who comes here there will fall his corresponding chapter: neither more nor less.
Like life, she must offer us what we deserve — that is, what we have earned by our own effort. In India the complete scale is found: the lowest and most abject on the one hand, and the highest and noblest on the other; terrible ugliness and stupidity beside the most perfect beauty and clear intelligence. To India one must come prepared, that she may give us something — only something — of that immensely great and beautiful thing she contains.
To him who comes before his time she is blind, or shows only vulgarity, since that is within anyone''s reach. But to him who gives himself to life with all the force of his intelligence and all the ardour of his heart, without calculation or any prejudice, intrepid, generous and at the same time saturated with humility — to him India opens her arms, bearing him lovingly to her so hidden heart.
Then what is found in this place infinitely surpasses all that was dreamed; and, arriving there, thinking is already superfluous, for there will then be no words able to express the inexpressible. The word will no longer serve; for only the soul, entirely free, is capable of perceiving and transmitting the eternal peace felt. And our lips can only afterwards affirm the reality of truly sublime existences come to their fullness.
This is what I can affirm on returning from the sacred mountain of Arunachala. And beside this friendly banyan, many times centenarian, under the cool shade that seems to communicate new energies to us, I close my eyes and try to string together something that may give some idea of this my journey to that mountain which, for me, has been like a beautiful dream.
I shall give you an account like the one I made as a girl, when to represent a man I drew only two circles, three dots, four straight lines, thus… And you now, with your rich imagination and your good will, will try to discover the man — that is, the soul enclosed in these poor strokes of mine.
From Madras we left in the morning, arriving at Villupuram at 14.00, crossing those extensive Indian lands, fertile or barren according as the divine grace of the monsoons has touched them or not.
Sandy kilometres, and then a true oasis in which flocks of goats and herds of buffalo rest placidly under the shade of the palms, looking towards the sky perhaps with some fear, for what may reach them from it is nothing but heavy coconuts which agile and playful monkeys can throw down at them from the high palm tops.
Then plantations of rice and other cereals, and beside the trees multicoloured turbans and white cloths: the field workers who contemplate with hope the worked earth. Huts built of clods and palm leaves recall our own country districts; in many of them people rest at their doors in a manner much like ours, replacing the maté with the green leaves of betel.
p. 22Several years of the most rigid discipline have prepared her to bear with considerable indifference cold, heat, hunger and thirst. Her husband is a great Bengali physician who appears to accompany her in her asceticism. She has a daughter being educated in London; and she herself, born in Paris, has travelled the whole world, speaking a great many languages and always seeking that which at last she managed to find.
Today she is rather poor, but her heart has regained the purity it had lost, and confidence in herself carries her through life in that heroic and victorious manner of which only one who, like her, has glimpsed… is capable. We took two carts — she and I in one, my companions in another — for this is the only means of locomotion existing for reaching the mountain. O mountain of Arunachala! No one can climb to its summit nor penetrate its bowels.
Marvellous things are told and affirmed of it: it is said to be inhabited by great yogis on one side and by fantastic beings on the other. Outwardly it appears to have caves which, on entering, turn into enchanted palaces that would give a new Scheherazade more than a thousand themes to treat. Mountain of Arunachala, of tempting beauty! But every traveller who attempts to reach its summit will be prevented by winds and stones.
It is night, and in the silence of the road only the clack-clack of our carts is heard. We reach the skirt of the mountain and enter by a broad road leading to the “Ashram”. What is an “Ashram”? It is a house sanctified by an exceptional man dwelling in it. He is called Sri Ramana Maharishi.
From childhood he was different from the rest; matters always preoccupied him that made others give no thought; his eyes and ears saw and heard beyond the family circle, and his soul felt itself insistently called from very far off. His family belonged to the high Brahmin class; but it was powerless to smother the sentiments of love and humanity that nested in his whole being.
He studied; but, impatient at not finding in the texts the answer to his thousand “whys”, he fled his house and went to the famous Temple of Madura to implore what no book had been able to give him. There he felt a voice saying to him: “Follow me and thou shalt find it. And he followed. The story is very long to tell. He endured hunger, contempt and outrages without end… Much time passed, years, before he arrived.
At last, one day, he came there… There the divine light of UNDERSTANDING illumined his mind and made his heart overflow with love. But afterwards terrible trials awaited him in a dark and deep cave, at whose door we stood, in the Temple of Arunachala, where by night the harmful animals of the place took refuge.
There, as the Bible says, was fulfilled that saying that man shall be able to live with wild beasts; and his sanctity became such that the whole people came to perceive it and flocked to him in crowds. Many and many he cured by his look alone; and such were the miracles he performed that the priests of the Temple, without his knowing, exploited him, charging the people who wished to see him… And so it was that he had to flee.

turno y lavamos nuestras manos.

p. 23on which he sits, a friend tells me, has its history: “The whole district feared a tiger that prowled thereabouts; but that tiger, so feared by everyone, would come to sleep at the Master''s feet. And one day it came to sleep, and rose no more. The animal had felt itself ill and wished to come to the feet of the only man who had loved it. That is its skin. His cow Lakshmi also comes to bid him good morning, bows, and licks his feet.
A hall some twelve metres by five, painted in soft colours, with wide doors and windows always open, is inhabited by Sri Maharishi. There he sleeps, thinks, speaks, writes, reads and meditates; there he receives all who wish to see him or to ask something. We removed our footwear on entering and sat, like everyone, on the floor.
A man of perfect physical beauty who seems a Nazarene, with long and lightly waved hair and great eyes of deep gaze, covered by a light white cloth, enters, smiles and speaks to the Master. Who is he? I asked.
He is a Hindu lawyer of the highest social class, celebrated for his fortune and intelligence, who has abandoned everything, absolutely everything, to help the Master; today he is his disciple and secretary and, since he knows many languages, can answer the innumerable correspondence that arrives daily. He has taken a vow of silence, speaking for five years only with the Maharishi. A soft bell sounds and we are taken to eat.
A square room with a stone floor is the dining hall. We sit on the floor. We are about twenty, besides the Maharishi. We three the only Westerners. Before each one is placed a green and shining plate — for it is a banana leaf.
A lady dressed in a white sari and a man serve: she the fruit already peeled, he the water and the curdled milk; he, with a great wooden ladle, carries from a copper vat to each plate a little mountain of white rice, placing on the left a home-made bread resembling our savoury fried cakes. Diogenes would have found himself very well here, for there was no cutlery; we learned to eat the rice by forming little mouthfuls with our hands.
We managed well enough; but some detail always escaped us — such as not using the left hand at all — which provoked laughter in our Hindu companions. That reminded me of when, on our old estancias, “a townsman turned up”. The act ended, we folded our “great plate” in four like a handkerchief and went, like everyone, to throw it in the rubbish; and on returning, at a trough, we waited our turn and washed our hands.
It was already nine at night and beginning to rain. The French lady arrives accompanied by her “bearer”, that is her servant, and invites me to follow her, for she will take me near her country house, since women cannot spend the night at the Ashram. I salute the Maharishi and take leave of my companions with an “until tomorrow!
The night was very dark and windy; a true tempest was unleashed with lightning and thunder; and, as in my childhood in open country, every tree seemed to me a phantom; I was afraid, but of course I did not confess it. My companion seemed to divine what was passing in me and said: “Avez-vous peur, peut-être?” — “Oh non, madame, je suis très courageuse! I know these nights of tempest in open country, because I was born in it.

Partimos.

p. 24the air may pass,” she said to me. But I shut doors and windows well when she had gone, for I did not want visits from snakes, monkeys, squirrels or other creatures. Two loud crickets were enough for me, and with their song they kept me company all night. In the matter of comfort I was a princess compared with my companions, for at the Ashram they had only the hard floor for a mattress. So one lives here, absolutely in the natural way.
At half past four in the morning footsteps and murmurs were heard; and opening the window a little later, I saw about a block away, along the main road, the lights of torches; and then, in the diffuse light of dawn, I made out an enormous crowd filing towards the mountain.
Afterwards I was told that, it being a religious feast day, the people were accustomed to go in pilgrimage to it; and since the sun in India is so strong and the distances covered on foot extremely long, the thousands of persons set out before dawn, lighting their way with torches and lanterns. On the new day the weather had changed and all nature was intoning canticles of praise. We went to the Ashram and the Master was in meditation.
We entered the hall — or rather we slipped in, for so great was the silence that it imposed a greater silence still; more than two hours passed, and then a choir of men intoned Vedic hymns. Never have I felt anything like it.
I could not compare these chants with anything known; not even the choirs I have heard in the Sistine Chapel at Rome could communicate anything similar to my soul; one would say that in pronouncing the sacred syllable they threw a true bridge between man and God.
The pilgrimage of which I spoke lasted all day, and the people passing along the road entered the Ashram and came to salute Him whom, though it is true not many understand, they nevertheless sense as something very great, and adore. The salutation was thus: they reached the threshold and threw themselves face down on the floor, arms extended and hands joined palm to palm. Hundreds upon hundreds of persons filed past in this manner.
The women with their showy saris and their arms and legs adorned with bracelets; the men and boys in the lightest white cloths, with hair loose or gathered under great turbans of varied colours; and the older girls in little white pleated skirts and loose blouses, with a great spray of flowers at the root of the braid. The Master does not desire these demonstrations; but so many are the grateful people that he cannot prevent it.
With great sorrow the day of our departure came; and that afternoon a lady dressed in an embroidered light-blue sari and two young girls wearing green and lilac saris respectively, with flowers in their hair — the three of them of extraordinary beauty — made us listen to songs of this land, accompanied by the sweetest chords of a vina.
The monkeys came and went, and likewise the small restless squirrels; and some of these, though still fearful and keeping away from anyone else, walk calmly over the Master''s legs. The two carts would come to fetch us at nightfall. We took our leave. I thanked the Maharishi for his hospitality, telling him that if I had spoken little with Him, the silence of his Ashram had for me been most eloquent.
p. 25is not inactive; I know great men who are the more active the greater their silence. On taking leave he said to us: “Will you visit the Temple of Madura?” — “No,” we answered, “for we have already lost the opportunity of doing so, which was on our arrival in India. “What a pity!
Is it that you will not visit it?…” he replied. We departed. MAYA, S. I. 25
